Thank you, Mitt Romney

... for making a three year old blog post of mine suddenly ridiculously relevant.  FWIW, despite some confusion, yeah, that's mine.  If someone could drop Paul Krugman a line I'd appreciate it.

Charles Pierce, the writer I'd like to be when I grow up, summarizes my opinions on Mr. Ryan adroitly.  I'll defend to the death your right to have an opinion different from mine, but when you're just a mendacious hypocrite, well, life's too goddam short.  Paul Ryan's family fortune was based on being paid by the government to build highways, he's never had a job other than "Congressman", none of his budget numbers add up -- at all -- and he's trying to push a budget that would raise taxes on the middle class, hand giant tax breaks to the rich, gut the country's infrastructure, and end Medicare -- which no matter what shit they sling at you is the plan because strangely, his plan doesn't apply to anybody over 55.  Why not, if it's so awesome?  Because old folk know bullshit when they smell it, that's why.

And why is he pursuing these policies?   Because, well, "job creators."

You know what?  I type for a living, and my stupid little typing creates a couple hundred jobs.  I'm an actual job creator, which was the last damn thing anybody (including my perpetually surprised father) expected when I started telling jokes in bars.  And I don't think that raising my tax rate by 3.4% (back the bad old Clinton Socialism Rate) so you, my fellow citizen, won't lose your fucking house when your kid gets cancer, or maybe we get a functioning power grid or roads that wouldn't be substandard in ZIMBABWE is "socialism".  It's basic.  Goddam.  Decency.

When the hell did we get talked out of that?

Phew.  That's been a few years of "don't talk politics while the show's on" building up.   Now back to our regularly scheduled programming.  And a reminder -- if the post doesn't say "Leverage" in the title, I can type whatever the hell I like.

    Fucking rock.

    That is all.

Oh, except, orcs. That was funny.

  3. I actually quoted (and credited to you) the "orcs" thing on a political blog today.

And I think it may be time to rerun your "I miss Republicans" post now that the GOP has decided to go with Out-of-Touch Millionaire/Zombie-Eyed Granny Killer (h/t Charlie Pierce) ticket.

I'll never be a conservative, but our system requires TWO sane, rational parties to work, and we're seriously short one at the moment.

  5. I was wondering why you'd been uncharacteristically silent on this front for a while. As a fan of your political ranting, this puts me in a quandary, since it makes me kinda hope your show ends. That's a "perverse incentive" as the economists say: maybe you should have one Leverage-only blog and one personal rant space?

  6. Well said. I knew there was a reason I watched Leverage. Other than, you know, enjoying it, 'cause that's not enough reason for anything, now is it?

  7. Oh, Rogers. Much as i lurves me some Leverage we out here in Left Blogylvania been missing your particular turn of phrase in the world of political discussions.

Much like SueN above, I find myself quoting your Atlas Shrugged / LOTR line (properly credited, natch) all the time.

And I can't look at the number 27% without seeing the crazification factor.

    So, thanks!

All that some of your conservative fans would ask of you Mr. Rogers, is that you treat us with respect. Insulting half your audience is one way to ensure that the jobs you created would be lost as quickly as the ratings on your show if a substantial chunk of your audience felt that they are held in contempt by the creators.

Bravo!! It's stunning how someone who lives off the taxes of American citizens can simultaneously get money from those who don't plan to pay taxes at all.

Paying taxes and supporting your community is patriotic. Starting wars and then not paying enough taxes to support those you sent to fight those wars is NOT patriotic.

And for those of you who feel "insulted" by the outing of a hypocrite and policies that are bankrupting our country, then I hope you take a minute to think about why you support a politician who complains about the deficit but doesn't want his rich donors to pay taxes to help solve the deficit problem.

And I love Leverage--best written show on TV :) Thanks for writing a show about defending the little guy and for sharing so much about the show with us--this blog is terrific.

  18. (COMMENT EDITED FOR CLARITY)

    @Anonymous

My show is about punishing the rich and powerful who broke the rules. THEY BROKE THE RULES, and any right-thinking liberal or conservative can agree that without rules, we have no legitimate society. Agree or disagree, we must play by the rules.

So I don't hold conservatives in contempt. If this VP choice had been Christie, or Portman, or Huntsman or Rubio, I'd be actively "Yay! Democracy!" I don't agree with those gentlemen generally, but they don't strike me as batshit insane. (I kind of like Christie, to tell the truth, despite everything.) If you feel that post means I hold you in contempt because you're conservative, you're incorrect.

I hold Paul Ryan in giant amounts of fucking contempt. If you feel that means I hold you in contempt because you agree with Paul Ryan, then you're probably right, because I have nothing but contempt for people who either understand his budget and don't give a shit how many people will be hurt, or don't understand his budget but follow Daddy. I have nothing but contempt for people who support institutionalized sociopathy.

If you feel that insulting Paul Ryan, one single solitary leader of the Republican, means I hold all conservatives in contempt because insulting conservative leaders is insulting conservatives, you're a tribalist sheep.

There's no constitutional right to have your opinions be respected. There's no constitutional right not to be made fun of. Grow up. And don't make veiled fucking threats.

"There's no constitutional right to have your opinions be respected. There's no constitutional right not to be made fun of."

Clearly, John, you have spent too much time in that cesspool of socialism they call Canada to come up with stuff like this. Next thing you know, you'll be writing TV episodes about hockey or something.*

Seriously, even if the title does say "Leverage", you can type whatever the hell you like. It's your blog and your show.

*(For clarity, I am Canadian. Yes, we'll apologise if you step on our foot, but when pushed, we can be the most sarcastic SOBs on the planet.)

The 'not apply to over 55' reminded me of this and this. Our countries may be different, but the underlying practice is still the same.

I made a polite request. You chose to see it as a "veiled threat." Here's reality John. No one HAS to watch your show. You put out a good show, and people will watch it regardless of the politics of the people involved. But if you hold the audience in contempt because of their beliefs, don't be surprised if people take their viewership elsewhere. That's not a threat - it's called the free market.

For the record, I don't care if you blog on politics, or rant against whatever topic strikes your fancy. That's called free speech. And since this is your blog, and your property, I am civil and respectful when posting some feedback.

All I would ask, as I said, is that you treat your conservative fans with respect in your rants. That's not "I'll respect you if you agree with me." That's "You know what, I understand that you like someone that I personally hold in contempt, but I'm willing to still speak with you as a human being and with courtesy."

That's not too much to ask, now is it?

    To Anonymous,

How was he discourteous? Did he make up stories about your birth? Say mean things about your mother? Make fun of how you dress? When person A is asking person B to stop holding him/her in contempt for views B thinks is contemptible, Person A is not asking for courtesy, but abandonment of principle.

  30. So 2 things:
    1) Expressing One's opinion on One's personal blog is not being discourteous to the Person who reads it. Said Person who reads it and responds by passive-aggressively suggesting that not kissing Person's ass by voicing an opinion that differs from Person's could result in One's ability to make a living is, at the very beginning of the List of Ways to Be a Douchebag, discourteous.

    b) Who cares what #2 was? ROGERS FOR PRESIDENT.

  33. "All I would ask, as I said, is that you treat your conservative fans with respect in your rants."

How about if he separates them into "modern" conservatives (which is, I guess, oxymoronic at some level) and "traditional" conservatives? And only holds "modern" conservatives in contempt? [I am of the opinion that there is no such thing as a modern conservative: what is sometimes called "conservatism" today is actually right-wing radicalism, seeking to sacrifice millions of "The Other", so that the M-Cs not have to pay more taxes than, let's say, Willard M. Romney. And they will use any tactic - e.g. the oft-whined-about-when-it-supports-left-wing-goals-but-nary-a-peep-when-it-supports-right-wing-goals "judicial activism" - to accomplish this.]

You remind me of the innumerable (and often innumerate) right-wingers who are more than happy to use scorched-earth rhetoric when talking to/about anyone to the left of Robert Welch, but start puling whenever a lefty returns fire in some minor way. (To be clear: not saying that YOU are necessarily that way, but if you call yourself a "conservative," most of your brethren and cistern are.)

  35. I do not think it is necessary to call names or make assertions about a person because they choose not toe post their names to a public forum. There are any number of legitimate and real concerns about doing so, particularly when one is posting an unpopular opinion.

That said. Holding one individual in explicit contempt is hardly holding half ones audience in contempt. To suggest that Rogers is doing so is just bad debate tactics, and any mockery that is leveled at you for suggesting otherwise is par for the course.
So. Yah. Raise the level of discourse, or shut the fuck up. Please.

    ReplyDelete
  36. "Attack the argument, not the arguer."

What "argument"? It was just a whine that you - well, I'm assuming it's you, since "Anonymous" does not really narrow things down much - made regarding John flaming conservatards and their support for the sad-eyed, granny-starving manchild VP-candidate. Whose budget "plan" screws the less-well-off, while not shrinking the debt nor deficit, but will help the richest among us.

Ryan's "plan" strikes me as being the conservatard ethos writ large: "All them 'Others' are taking away stuff that would make my life more comfortable. Who cares if it keeps them from [starving/freezing/fill-in-your-own]? The only thing that matters is that I don't pay any more taxes, because SOCIALISM that's why!"

It's certainly great to listen to conservatards talk about how we should return to the golden age of individuals believing that they're the only ones who deserve to be helped, and the rest - i.e. brown people, poor people, non-christians, etc. - are unworthy, and can go pound sand.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Mr. Rogers:

Indeed, there's no constitutional right to have one's opinions respected. But I fail to see how a civil society can survive for long without the different sides showing each other at least a basic level of respect. I mean, if one group can't have a simple political conversation on a blog without one side calling the other "granny-starving" "conservatards" and accusing them of watching "Fux News" -- ah, the rapier wit! Somewhere Noel Coward is weeping with envy! -- how are we as a society supposed to have any sort of productive national discourse at all?

As for Paul Ryan's plan and the supporters thereof, you jump very quickly to the "My opponents just want to hurt people!" argument. Try considering, just for a moment, that perhaps Ryan and his supporters do NOT want to hurt people, but are afraid that if we maintain or increase our current level of overspending, even more people will be hurt. Consider also that if big-government advocates are going to yell "Sociopaths!" at small-government advocates every time the latter try to take some sort of action -- as I have seen happen time and time again -- at some point the "boy who cried wolf" principle is going to kick in, and people are going to stop listening to anything the big-government advocates say at all. Maybe you're fine with that . . . but if not, I suggest with humility, you might just want to rethink the tone a little bit.

And since you're concerned about people being hurt and all, we could talk sometime about the jobless rates under President Obama -- including, if you'd like to get anecdotal about it, all my friends who are currently unable to find jobs. We could talk about all the doctors who are seriously thinking about quitting because they cannot function under Obama's health plan. If you want to take it a step further, we could even talk about Fast and Furious and the wanton killings of Americans and Mexicans thanks to the policies of our current administration. Heck, you could even do an episode of "Leverage" about it. It might not be as fun as an episode about a cheerleading bill -- though I'll be the first to admit that I enjoy watching Sophie fight the corn subsidies battle, and Parker try to deal with peppy teenage girls. But it might open a few eyes to some of the very real evil that takes place every day under the authority of government, and that's worth doing any day.

Bottom line: I hear all the time from a variety of sources that we conservatives are mean and rotten and lousy enough that no upstanding, decent liberal should have to show us any respect at all. If that's your opinion, you're certainly entitled to it. But I will do my utmost not to respond in kind, because I was fortunate enough to have people in my life who taught me to treat others better than that. One of them was my grandfather, an old-school Democrat, who drilled into me that you respect each person's worth and value and treat him as you'd want to be treated, regardless of whether his views differ from yours. You may do as you please, but I'll continue to do the best I can to follow that great man's example.

Finally, nice job on this week's episode.

Yours with all respect (whether you have any for me or not :-) ),

    Gina

without one side calling the other
Why are you assuming there are only two sides? What I see is a collection of individuals, expressing opinions about other individuals or groups of individuals.

you jump very quickly to the "My opponents just want to hurt people!" argument
It's not "just want to" -- there's no assumption of motive. Just results.

we could talk sometime about the jobless rates
We could talk about a lot of things. But I fail to see the point of requiring every political post to be comprehensive in scope. Blog posts tend to touch upon a single topic.

you respect each person's worth and value
Perhaps he is... Having read pretty much everything Miss Manners has published, I'm aware that even within the bounds of civility, there are ways to express that you do not respect someone or that you do not value someone's opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Hi Chelsea -- thanks for responding! I wasn't saying that all (or any) political posts need to be comprehensive. But the subject of hurting people was brought up in the original post, so I was merely demonstrating that there's an awful lot of that going around, regardless of party affiliation.
