Fantastic episode, as usual! Only have one question; did the idea for a cooking-centric episode revolving around Eliot have anything to do with the fact that Kane loves to cook and did he add any of his own cooking comments/nuances or was it all scripted?

I got confused by a couple of bits, like why Hardison monkeyed with the thermostat and where the bad guy got the truffles in the end (since I thought Hardison grabbed everything in the safe), but there were some awesome character moments. I loved that Chef Elliot was so in control that no one even blinked as the unconcious thugs started to pile up in his kitchen. And Parker discovering beauty was very sweet.

Hardison messed with thermostat because when Eliot was caught in the off limit freezer he said the ice machine was broken. Hardison broke it to cover in case they checked Eliot's story - which they did.

Hardison took $$ and truffles out of safe but had to quickly escape after biting bad guy. $$ was in his messenger bag but he left truffles behind.

  3. Ok, the henchman's name was clearly Rampone but I could have sworn Sophie's alias was Wambach. Is there a USWNT fan writing for you guys?

  4. Maybe I missed something, but where did the team get enough truffles for the first 'shipment' Nate sold?

I knew it was going to end up being truffles the moment the deal took place in a cooking school. A question, though... did some of this come up through research on The Last Dam Job? Because it strikes me that quahog or truffle, it's importing a potentially invasive species without permit. Which the penalties are woefully inadequate for, when you consider the potential for damage.

  5. BTW... referencing a pair of classic golfers on the same day as the PGA Championship? This after 'First Contact' coinciding with the Mars Rover landing? Just what did you sacrifice to the scheduling gods?

    ReplyDelete
  6. Ok, I must have missed it first time around - and I'll watch it again tomorrow to confirm - but I've been told by someone else (correct me and them if I'm wrong, John) that there was a character named Toby Heath in the episode. If true, that answers my question. Rampone, Wambach and Heath? Yeah, you've got a USWNT fan. Hell yeah.

  7. Another fun episode!

Gordan Ramsey could learn a few (doezen) things from Eliot about how to get quality work out of the cooking staff.

And I don't think I'll ever get tired of Eliot fighting bad guys in the kitchen - he's just so damned efficient about it!

Hardison with his cooking laser was so cool.

The Parker subplot was interesting, but... it felt like a lot of important stuff happened off screen between her and Eliot, maybe even enough to have spanned a few episodes.

So, is part of the theme of this season about the team rediscovering things about themselves?

Nate needing to be reminded to listen to what the client wants. Sophie finding new inspiration by buying the theater and coaching actors. And now Parker rediscovering that she really does like quite a few things (e.g., picking locks, sneaking past security systems, all those sparkly jewels she's stolen over the years, the smell of sequentially numbered $100 bills).

So, what's it going to be for Eliot? We already know that he has a passion for cooking, that he enjoys the saving-the-world military stuff, and flat-ironing his hair.

And Hardison - what has he forgotten that he used to enjoy?

Annoying science question: what on earth did Hardison inject into his super cool liquid nitrogen safe popper? Because, s'far as I know, liquid nitrogen looks like boiling water and not iridescent blue liquid (also, if it's cold enough to pop a safe, it's cold enough to shatter a plastic syringe.)

Is the Foodie Queen a real (fictional) person? Did Parker just borrow her identity for a night?

All-in-all, I liked it. Wished we got to see a bit more of the students, though. They seemed to kind of go from clueless to chefs really quickly.

    ReplyDelete
  9. oppyu1:53 AM

Ooh, I liked this one. Something you really see in these episodes is that after four years of developing these characters, you can put them in almost any situation and something entertaining will come up, probably with some reference to previous character development and continuity.

Question though; what were you doing with Hardison this episode? Elliot was shedding light onto his mysterious backstory, Parker was learning to grow as a person outside of stealing stuff, Sophie was learning to grow as a person outside of crime and acting (for herself) in general, Nate was in the background doing his usual mastermind thing, but Hardison seemed to be front-and-centre doing... nothing. Geeking out over the laser was very in-character and funny, but edible paper and being a douche about tipping seemed a little... I dunno, redundant? The others got character development with their funny, while Hardison just got funny. Which is fair enough, but it just stands out a bit when he's front-and-centre even though he's kind of irrelevant to the grift (I mean, the grift we see. We all remember how quickly the team falls apart without Hardison in 'The Gold Job'; he's definitely not irrelevant.)

Finally, just how good is Elliot at cooking? Talented amateur, someone who could make a decent living as a professional, someone who could make a fantastic living as a professional, or heads-and-shoulders above every other cook in the world? Turning a bunch of uninterested, untalented rich people into professional chefs in the time it takes to set up a con must have taken some talent.

Final, final question; was that Kane doing the knife stuff during Elliot's fast vegetable chopping into to his students? That seems like it could be very dangerous for someone who wasn't a talented cook.

Final, final, final question; where the hell does Elliot find the time to be the world's baddest bad-ass, top-notch chef, quality singer and flirty Casanova all at once? It's ridiculous how talented that man is...

  11. Great episode. OK, have to ask: Hardison eating a yellow bell pepper in the scene in the kitchen. A hat tip to Iron Chef? Because that would be fantastic.

  12. Anonymous3:30 AM

Ditto Pixie's post regarding the golfers' names. Thank you for not naming them Woods and Mickelson. That would have sucked. They get too much press.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Hardison, while totally in character, did seem to regress a little, here---a boy with toys and focus issues. I thought Nate might tell him to keep it together, as in the end of the first episode.

I'd assumed the ion cannon would feature in the con, but maybe it's being introduced here to be used later?

I wouldn't have expected him to undertip, either, considering how free he usually is with his money---and how paid for the potential damages to the bar when Sterling walked in way back in The Zanzibar Marketplace. i'm waiting for that to mean something, too---should I?

I feel like a conspiracy theorist, but you've trained me to assume everything is relevant to either the episode or the seasonal arc. Maybe y'all are just a little too good at your jobs (that sounds oddly familiar . . . ).

Oh, and who was that boy whose hair Eliot ruffled at the airport? Such a beautiful smile.

    ReplyDelete
  14. OK - totally my fave ep of the season so far. It felt very energetic, which I think is part the kitchen setting which is relevant and not overdone in scripted TV right now and part that it was a true ensemble piece where all five had their moments and all five seemed to really be enjoying themselves.

The only thing that fell flat for me is the idea the Parker lost touch with her own passion. This is the girl who's probably the most consistently passionate (next to maybe Hardison) about what she does. I thought the idea that she didn't get someone else's passion could have been explored on it's own without it coming from a place of her not feeling it herself.

The only saving grace there was that it gave me two of my favorite moments - her calling Nate's passion "sicko mind control" and Sophie coaching her through the food tasting with "the first time you stole something" and "Jazz!"

Pixie - the first truffles came from a chef friend of Toby's. He delivered 16 lbs to Nate because that was as much as he could get.

Question - if there's a season 6, will the team be back in Portland? Seems like it's small enough to get burned fast.

I loved this episode. Just. Loved it.

I second the question about was that really Kane chopping the celery that fast?

Also...was Hardison supposed to remind us of Dr. Horrible with the white coat, the goggles and the laser??? Because...he reminded me of Dr. Horrible. :)

I love this show. Thank you for making it so beautifully.

  16. You should read my tweet to TNT.

Third the question about who was doing the chopping? Btw, I guess I get off episode a lot. Sorry, but kudos on Tesla vs Edison (FIrst Contact) reference!

I Liked the camera work on this one, a lot of close ups and slow motion on the fight scene.

Awhile back I mentioned an idea. It was involving Parker baking brownies for Hardison. :)

Fun episode. I need to rewatch today to catch all the little things.

@ Kevin W. Yes - Paul Guyot (@FizzHogg), the writer of this episode, is a huge soccer fan. He is also an avid cyclist. The bike messenger is a friend of his who is big in the biking world. (@Fatcyclist) He blogged about his experience on set.

@oppyu - Yes, Christian Kane can actually cook and that is probably him doing the knife work. He announced yesterday that his web-based cooking show is definitely in the works now. Check out his published recipe for 'Rattlesnake Steak'

Kudos to Paul and to Tawnia McKiernan first time Leverage Director (I believe)

  18. Why was the airport capture by Fish and Wildlife instead of the Department of Agriculture?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Macstl - thanks for the info about the messenger, I knew he looked familiar and had seen his blog.

Aspen Kincade - so? Tell us your tweet or at least your twitter handle? Is it one of thousands sent each week begging for the show to be renewed? We're still working on that.

    OK, John:

    1. Was the window to the outdoors in the pub there in the last 3 eps?

    2. Did some of the students' names get changed from script to filming (uh..Whitney?).

    ReplyDelete
  20. Anonymous6:59 AM

Uh, not sure why the question about the celery, unless CK has a twin brother. It's pretty clearly him using the knife. Plus, cutting quickly and uniformly is not the hardest thing in the world to learn if you've got a good knife and an interest in cooking.

    ReplyDelete
  21. SaffieDarling7:48 AM

The only Chef I've ever worked for was a large, middle-aged woman in a country pub, but I have zero doubt she could take down any would-be assassins just as easily as Eliot if they were stupid enough to try it during the dinner rush.

That said, I think I preferred leaving Eliot's relationship with food unspoken. Although five seasons in, you've probably earned your hitter acknowledging he has and, occasionally attempts to share, feelings. Plus I'm an absolute sucker for Parker and Eliot trying to navigate normal so... (I was also loving the Nate and Parker beats for the record. Although the fact that Parker's house of cards collapsed around the time she said 'Portland's fine' is worrying me.)

I actually have a question that dates back to the (Very) Big Bird Job: do you feel that by creating an episode that features the Spruce Goose, but not a single cast member in aviator goggles, you've broken your contract with the audience?

Okay fine, episode related. How is the brewpub menu going?

Oh and we've found out how Eliot learned to cook; any idea where Christian picked up those knife skills? (I'm assuming not as a part of an illegal military operation, but honestly wouldn't be totally surprised to find out that was the case.)

Great episode, although I was a little confused about Hardison not tipping. Thought maybe it was a reference to another character?
I loved the Parker subplot. Stealing things is her life, her art. I can see her getting bored and depressed when she's not getting that rush!
Loved the "Toby Heath" reference! LOL!
So was this filmed at the culinary institute across from The Governor?

My absolute favorite episode so far.Powerful: just like CK and Eliot Funny:hysterical when Eliot uses the frying pan to knock out one of the guys all the while still concentrating on the task at hand. But my heart almost broke hearing CK saying"He's one of the guys that kept me from falling all the way down, and now I'm asking the other guy to understand why I am going to help him".Felt like CK was really speaking from his soul, not just Eliot talking to Nate. Those two actors are fantastic together. Could really see the admiration and respect they have for each other on and off screen.

    Absolutely fabulous episode!

Lots of best parts - but the bestest has got to be the slo mo fighting.

    LOVE CK and Elliot

Thanks and congrats to you all

  25. Not quite the Top Chef mashup I once dreamt about, but close enough. Loved the "My name is CHEF."

Just a note of concern, though: I have been noticing some learning lately, and I'm starting to fear that there might be hugging soon.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Want to take up the cudgels for Hardison about the not tipping thing, that seems to upset so many posters. In my opinion it was just that he got so carried away with his newfound enthusiasm, that he totally forgot the obvious. It's something that happens to me too, so I can relate to that.
Something else: really loved the episode. Season 5 is probably my favourite so far. It started great and got better every week.

    ReplyDelete
  27. petticoat9:14 AM

Definitely one of my favorite fight scenes of Kane with the goons, and I loved Nate's nonsensical metaphors (feels like there could have been one more added though to really drive it through).

Questions: 1.) What was Sophie's tree-hugger accent? It sounded like it was in and out of British with some Ashley Judd thrown in? Perhaps some UK country-esque regional accent?

2.) Did Nate fill up those last 4-ish pounds of truffles with something else?

3.) It seems like the villains this season are more personable. And hilarious. ('Napoleon's dead.' 'Thank you, Rampone.') Is this a conscious trend or just something happening on its own?

    ReplyDelete
  28. So my question is: Just how deep does Hardison's skinflint tipper streak go? Does he refuse to tip the coffee shop barrista? The pizza delivery guy? And what's his personal philospohy on the give-a-penny-take-a-penny dish? Too germy to even look twice at?

Honestly, I'm kind of surprised at the hullabaloo over Hardison not tipping. Sometimes, nice people tip poorly and vice versa. It was such a minor part of the episode.

Plus, in this case, with Eliot and Nate telling him to tip, that's just going to make him even less willing to do so than he already was. It was probably as much about showing those guys up as not tipping. And then with the messenger telling him to tip, there was really no way he was going to do it.

    ReplyDelete
  29. PurpleOps12:31 PM

Another fun episode! First, my questions.

    1. Wasn't Hardison's insult of the delivery man by not wanting to tip him somewhat out of character? And was Hardison really receiving D&D material? (If so, gotta be Rogers' hardcovers!)
    2. Did Eliot do all his own cutting? Particularly good rhythm on his initial cutting sequence. How much wound up on the, erm, cutting room floor?
    3. Did Eliot actually say "And I smelt it" at one point, rather than "smelled"?
    4. About midway through the episode, there was this cityscape shot, and a very loud "wipe" sound effect. We've heard such wipe sounds before, but never that loud. What might have happened?
    5. What accent was Gina doing as the "hippie"? It seemed to swing wildly between something UK and American - very odd.

Now, the comments (feel free to comment on the comments, too):

    6. In Tim's entrance to the kitchen, he looked amazingly young. Maybe he was just looking more mischievous than usual, but it caught my attention.
    7. More praise for Joe LoDuca. During the "casing the kitchen" sequence, the percussion stuff he was doing was sensational!
    8. This episode title was good, but it could have easily been called "Don't Order The Spinach", or "Never bring a knife to a food fight!"

  30. Cheese2:47 PM

I loved this episode as I usually do with Leverage but I was just wondering: are we ever going to see deeper into Hardison's backstory? His may be the least dramatic out of the team, but I think we've seen the least of hardisons background story outside of his hacking escapades as a teenager in little glimpses. It would be fun to learn more about his experience in foster care with Nana maybe.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Anonymous2:47 PM

Wasn't it established that Parker liked chocolate? That's something besides stealing...

    ReplyDelete
  32. Suzanne M.3:01 PM

@petticoat Sophie's accent was a pretty spot on West Country (South West England) accent. It's stereotypically spoken by Cornwall/Devon farmers but I'm from Bristol in the South West and know a fair few people who talk exactly like that and have that kind of twang myself to be honest!

You don't hear that accent on American tv very often! It was pretty great.

My question: I loved the Parker & Eliot stuff. I'm really liking the way Eliot's letting his guard down even more this season - explaining his love of food, asking Nate for help and last week almost telling Nate & Sophie about his helicopter missions before catching himself and covering with the hilarious fishing line (amazing line read there btw). Is this deliberate or am I reading too much into things?

What a wonderful episode of characterization for Eliot. Thank you! I just have one comment/question.
We've met nate's ex Maggie, Father Paul, and Sterling, Sophie (Charlotte's) relative, Parker's mentor Archie, and Eliot's friends Willie and the chef Toby (?), and ex-fiance Aimee yet we've not seen anyone connected to Hardison. Parker did say she wanted to meet his Nana. Could we see those fireworks. Bound to be laughs with that.
Again. Thanks so much for the French Connections #renewLeverage

  34. Great episode: a quick ask, at the end when the team are exiting the jetway Eliot reaches up and messes with the hat of a kid standing there. That kid looks SO DAMN HAPPY to be there he can barely contain himself. I figure maybe he won something or knows somebody to get that spot.

So, random kid or something else?

  35. Ok, I'm missing something...how is having the truffles illegal, if restaurants are advertising that they have them?

Another really fantastic episode! Probably my favourite of the season so far, in fact. It felt more like "classic Leverage" than the previous 3. Not that this season is lacking in any way, just that it has a different vibe.

No questions, just a quick thank you to whoever came up with the hippie chick alias. Gina rocked that whole look. Any chance of that character making a return at some point? Definitely a favourite Sophie alias, next to Annie Kroy of course. ;)

Christian Kane always blows me away when he hits those emotional beats. He was superb this week! Also, major props for the Parker bits. You guys have mastered the art of measured character development. You've never rushed it, which is why if always feels really authentic.

    Thanks for another great one!

  38. Oh my god! I loved this episode!

    "What's your name?" "Chef." LOL!

    Nate the man cougar? Cool!

Very nice backstory for Eliot. Toby saying, "I gave them a second chance" about his students from foster homes can also apply to Eliot.

What book is Parker reading when Hardison's package arrives?

I loved the moments Parker and Eliot had, and Sophie already knowing what Parker loves (and hates). Eliot would be the best person to talk to Parker about feelings. I liked their talk on the mountain last season, too, and this is a good follow-up.

And may I just say that Beth looks absolutely ravishing in that black wig?

Sophie hears voices in her head and her students don't care??? Um...

The way Nate kept sniffing the truffles with a puzzled look on his face made me think that he didn't really understand their appeal, lol.

Tony-worthy. Thank you for not saying, 'Oscar-worthy.' The academy awards are totally overrated.

Eliot's fight with the French henchmen! Awesome. And he's so badass that his students don't even care!

Purple tomatoes. Good grief. Tomatoes don't make you cry.

Um, Hardison? I'd rather have the three-course meal, thanks. No block of foam for me.

Parker discovering feelings! Love the ending!

"Napoleon's dead." "Thank you, Rampone." Rampone's not too gifted in the brains department, is he?

Okay, and am I the only one crazy-obsessed enough to be excited about Marshall Teague acting with Christian again? (He was in Crossfire Trail, one of CK's early projects, and Universal Squadrons!!)

I was wondering why Eliot was hiding his face from Rampone, and then you made him recognize him (and his bad attitude)! What's the backstory there? They worked together once?

    Very awesome episode! Thank you!

Sophie hears voices in her head and her students don't care??? Um...

Reminded me of Geoffrey on Slings & Arrows - I would so love Sophie to get her own S&A-style subplot.

    ReplyDelete
  40. @Kevin W I thought there were a lot of USWNT references, too! There was Rampone, Wambach, I'm pretty sure the lady who called Nate a 'male cougar' was named Hope and was messaging her friend Sydney. LOL.

Other possible football/soccer references - Lampard, and I think 2 of the French villains were named Patrick (Patrick Viera?) and Samir (Samir Nasri?).

And from the women's soccer team contingent, don't forget our client "Toby" Heath.

  43. David Hunt7:53 AM

Well I knew it wasn't drugs in that bag, but not knowing what weird food item would be worth that ridiculous amount, I guessed some form or rare/protected caviar.

So how much of that scene of Eliot holding the knife on the Busey was Eliot actually considering killing the guy and how much was Eliot punishing him by making him think Eliot was about to kill him? I lean more toward the former, but his conversation with Nate makes me wonder.

  44. Hi,

This is for John Rogers. My name is Laney, and I was watching season 4 of Leverage on dvd and realized something when watching it. In episode 10 (The Queen's Gambit Job), when Sterling and Eliot are in the car, Sterling says to Eliot "You're father says that you crawled 3 miles through a sewer to kill the head of Al Qaeda in Yemin, but the coffee is a problem". So, Sterling mentions that he has talked to Eliot's father; so does that mean that Sterling knows his father? If so, that should definitely be in an episode! Please respond, because I'm interested to hear what you think!

    - Laney

    ReplyDelete
  45. David Hunt8:42 AM

    @Laney

I'm not Rogers and haven't picked up the Season 4 DVD (yet), but according to my memory, Sterling mentions that Elliot's FILE says he crawl through etc...

Sterling being in Interpol, which Rogers as described as the Leverageworld's version of SHIELD, him having access to a file that detailed on Elliot is entirely believable. The interesting backstory hint is the guy he did in Yemen, not Elliot's dad.

    Echoing what medicinewoman said.

"He's one of the guys that kept me from falling all the way down, and now I'm asking the other guy to understand why I am going to help him."

I love the funny stuff and the cons, but character beats like this are what keep me coming back. Powerfully written and powerfully delivered. Please thank the writer and Christian for such wonderful work.

  47. 1. Nobody mentioned so far that Kane had a knife fight with Marshall Goddam Teague? The villain of Road House, G'kar's faithful bodyguard Ta'Lon from B5? Great casting.

    2. Am I getting a hint that Hardison's becoming a little... dispassionate as a result of spending too much time (secretly, at that) with Nate? Missing Parker's need to talk, needlessly whining about tipping? Seems a bit cruel for Alec...

    3. As an ex-Bristolian, wasn't too impressed with Sophie's West Country twang - sounded positively American for the first line. And what the hell was that accent on Jean-Luc? That was some "Allo Allo?"- level stuff there!

    4. A few loose plot points here and there, but still a fine hour on the Fun Train.

  48. Anonymous8:30 PM

First Nate insists he be paid full market price - $2,000 per pound for 20 pounds. He was thought a rube by the mark because the actual market price is $12,000 per lb. Then, Nate hands the guy 16 lbs. of truffles, and the guy - guessing the weight - says it's off by 8 oz. So who is the rube, really?

Anyway, Nate never handed over more than 16 pounds of truffles.

  49. This ep actually answered a question for me: Why was Hardison (whom we all know is wicked smart) so ludicrously impressed last time when he bounced the signal off the moon during the day, but apparently, if he doesn't know what the Vernal Equinox is, basic astronomy is one of the gaping holes in his knowledge...okay.

Now, the part that hit me over a head like a 2 ton weight labelled Acme: Hardison has always been selfish in a teenager sort of way, but this time he's well on his way to being a Grade A selfish putz. He didn't have time to talk to Parker; he didn't get to play with the laser; he was expected to tip fatcyclist (and was the 52 cents deliberate? I was always taught that a tip that included 2 cents was a way of making it clear that you didn't forget and you weren't short of cash, you just weren't gonna tip properly for whatever reason). In fact, Hardison spent the entire ep being aggrieved that he wasn't getting to play with the toys. The sense of entitlement that is unspoken in "Age of the Geek, baby" has got completely out of control. Why the hell is anybody happy that Parker is dating this prick? Why have you set up the situation and the character like this. It's mean.

Luckily, Parker has Eliot and Sophie who will find a way to help her through crises like this. Which of course begs the question, as Parker learns what it feels like to truly *like* stuff (actually, I'd argue that she's learned transcendence; she's found how the thing connects you to the maker. She seems to revel in that connection, so she's growing more human while Alec grows less) and Hardison grows more self-involved are we building to a great big bust? It sure feels like it since their relationship seems to be built almost entirely on aesthetic appreciation.

Short version: Hardison is getting icky while Parker's working very hard to be better; is this going to affect plot lines? Not that I think that would be a bad thing. The two of them together has baffled me from the start.

[Sorry, I just know a Lot of Stuff and it leaks into parentheses and things]

I'm going to stop before the mob gets here with the torches and pitchforks.

  50. Favorite moments:

"From pole to plate" - nice work by the extra on that reaction shot.

    "I don't have a sicko love . . . let's stay on you."

Really liked the whole setup of a truffle smuggling business. Very ingenious.

    "Napoleon's dead."

"Like open up another bookstore" - a little Portland in joke?

    "The 'n' is mostly silent."

Steve Valentine and Marshall Teague are both really good here.

LOVED Sophie coaching Parker through her food tasting.

Sophie's bearded acting student - another good extra.

Eliot methodically dispatching 3 French guys without barely paying them any attention.

"Like, right when I said it, I felt like I may have gone too far."

AWESOME casting with the agents at the end. They were just so perfectly quirky looking and yet still credible.

I always associate the best Leverage episodes with a smart wit, and while this one wasn't quite one of the best, it was very smart and witty a lot of the time.

    QUESTIONS:

When Nate and Eliot are talking at the beginning about Eliot's past, Nate says basically "you did wetwork," and Eliot nods. Google tells me that means assassinations/murders. Correct?

Was Eliot really close to killing Rampone before Nate stepped in? If so, are we to assume that Eliot would only slip that far back if someone was a real threat to someone very important to him?

    ReplyDelete
  51. @ Cat Vincent:

  53. I'm with Rebecca and medicinewoman...the character beats. Cripes, you guys KILL me with those. Not only two very good moments between Nate and Eliot*, but also Parker seeking out Eliot when she's looking to "like" things. You've talked about the unique relationship those two have, how they are somewhat outside the rest of the group because of their experiences, and so it made perfect sense to me that Eliot would be the one to explain to her.

Good to see the continuing development of the Eliot character, by the way. We're getting more of his backstory filled in at the same time we're getting to see him passionate and energized about something outside of his work as a hitter. Very satisfying.

*Hutton and Kane are SO good together. I'm always excited to see a dramatic/intense scene between them.

Why did Nate shake his head and blow off Parker after one question?

How did everyone except Sohpie manage to forget that Parker already had a passion.

At the end, was she reembracing her passion, or was she *seeing* the artwork for the first time and that's why she was shown looking around and not touching anything?

  57. Loved the episode! I always enjoy learning about Eliot's background. Speaking of, we have met Nate's father, we met Archie (for Parker), when are we going to learn about Hardison's Nanna? Also, are we ever going to be introduced into Eliot's fmaily, like his father or mother, or possible siblings? I think it would be cool to do a family episode for the gang!
The Parker/Hardison relationship is starting to remind me of the early Nate/Sophie relationship. One is ready to go and livening up (Parker/Sophie), while the other is sinking a little deeper into themselves (Hardison/Nate). Interesting character development there.

@Katie - I love Parker and I like Hardison, but I don't like them together. I'm one of the minority people that always thought Parker and Eliot (my 2 favs) would make a fun couple. Rogers has said many, many times that that couple would never happen, but I'm wondering if they are setting up something like either (1) Eliot, being like Parker's older brother, becomes protective of her and has a talk with Hardison on his treatment of her, or (2) Hardison gets jealous of the relationship Parker and Eliot have, thinking it's more than it is, and it knocks some sense into him.

  59. Alright, so the French guy who was dealing the truffles was named Jean-Luc and the guy sitting next to him in the front of the car was called Patrick. Is that subtle reference to Sir Patrick Stewart and Star Trek: TNG? Because it made me very, very happy (especially after the "Willy Riker" thing in the previous episode)!

  62. I'm terribly late with this, but I loved this episode! Eliot in the kitchen is my happy place, lol.

As so many others have said, the character beats in this one killed me. The Eliot-Nate scene, where Eliot finally explained why cooking means so much to him, was fabulous. And to hear him refer to Nate as "ther other guy" (who kept him from falling all the way down) explained so much about his loyalty, even when Nate's spiralling out of control. It was a lovely moment, and Kane nailed it.

Also, the Eliot-Parker moments were fantastic. They have a truly unique relationship, and I adore the way Beth and Christian play off each other.

I loved the kitchen fights, with Eliot just laying the guys out as they came after him, and I lol'ed at his "taste this" before taking down that thug.

And, f course, the knife fight with Marshall Teague was great. Also, whether intentional or not, it served as a very nice callback to "The Wedding Job," where Eliot talks about knives in context (the onion and the Yakuza). We got both contexts with this. *g*

Loved Sophie's "hippie chick," and Nate's Gnar ("the 'n' is mostly silent") Slabdash. God love Nate and his oily personas, lol.

Most of my questions have been asked above, so I'll throw out that occurred to me this morning, about the teaching chef Sophie cleared out with the cooking strippers reality show. What happened to the poor guy when he got to wherever he was going and discovered there were no strippers?

Or, more meta, what happens to anyone the team clears out with a fake story and plane tickets? Do they just enjoy the free vacation, or does the team actually have something waiting for them?

Anyway, great job. You all are on a roll so far!

My question is unrelated to the episode...

You guys come up with a ton of backstory for the crew that never makes it into the show. What's the best heist or con pulled off by a character or the team that the audience doesn't know about?

    ReplyDelete
  64. Shayna2:04 AM

I don't mean to be crude but... have Hardison and Parker... consummated? The reason I ask is because Parker seemed really unfamiliar with sex in season 3. Notice I didn't say she'd never experienced it before. That I could not tell. But she certainly didn't seem to know it when she heard it. I realize that was for a cartoonish comedic beat but still. In addition, she clearly hasn't gotten close to anyone before Hardison (at least no one that didn't then leave her). I don't know if Leverage is the type of show where you can deal with that kind of thing (physcial intimacy I mean. Maybe that's too "adult") but I just want to know what we're supposed to assume as viewers (and I was kind of looking forward to Sophie giving Parker "he sex talk". Not that we were promised that or anything). It seems like they're sleeping together and she has no issue with it (waking up in the morning with one of Hardison's t-shirts on is a clue). Are we just to assume everything is hunky dory on that front? Did I spell hunky dory right? Is it bad that I'm too lazy to look it up? Does that make me a product of a lazy generation?

I know you can't talk about the actor's contracts but, out of curiosity, did Gina ask for time off or something? I'm not saying us Sophie fans are getting shafted or anything. I'm happy with what we're getting. It just seems like something is off with her presence.

Does the network put any pressure on you to focus on characters that they know are really popular? Like Eliot and Parker? I'm just curious. Again, no complaining. Just genuine curiosity.

Sophie's character must be hard because you don't really want to dig too much into her back story (which you know we hate haha) so you have to create conflicts and obstacles for her that are very... present tense. like her theatre. It explores her character in an interesting way without actually revealing anything about her. Is that right? Or am I way off? Anyway, I love the theatre stuff and I think it's fun. Great job so far on this season. I'm not trying to be insulting but I find myself a little more impressed with this season than previous seasons. They're all enjoyable and all have their impressive moments but this season takes the cake for me. But I shouldn't speak so conclusively yet!

I am EXTREMELY late with this question, sorry! I am a newbie to Leverage and just loved it! Going to make it a regular viewing adventure now.

My question is only this...on this episode, the French Connection, Parker was listening to music near the end, and trying to remember the artist & song is killing me! Does anybody know who they are or how I can find it? It will be much appreciated! Thanks!

On the dvds you've said that hardison was the emotional barometer of the show but this episode was a very 'un'-hardison like episode.

1.)the way he noticed parker was down then as soon as she went to open up to him he blew her off. he better then any of the crew knows she has a hard time opening up. So him doing that seemed wrong. 2.) the childlike way he acted during the con while funny at times was too much. It seemed like he was putting the con at risk. Even the students called him out when they were supposed to be in class learning. 3.) The way he hit the safe again didn't seem smart. knowing people were far from the kitchen he blows the safe making tons of noise. this from the same man who made both 'parker 2000' and marvin. It didn't make sense to me. 4.)as mentioned the tip thing seemed off. this is the same man who personally wrote hundreds of checks during the Gold Job. Handles the team money but somehow doesn't know tip etiqutte.

After 5 seasons it was really weird to see the 'moral compass' of this team regress back to season one episode one hardison. On top of that knowing how much this meant to elliot.

That all being said still loved it as i do all things leverage!!

  68. So I have another question that I forgot to put in my previous comment. This is completely unrelated to the episode (except for the fact that it concerns Leverage) but is there ever going to be another Con-Con? I saw all of the video from the 2010 one but didn't hear about it until afterwards and ever since I've really wanted to go!

  69. Sabine10:24 AM

Eliot had already developed (or regained) some principles about his job before the Nigerian Job. So when he says that Nate kept him from hitting the bottom, is he referring to something that happened before the team got together or does he mean Nate kept him from backsliding?
That was lovely a scene, btw. As lovely as the Parker and Eliot scene.
Also lovely but in a different way was that fantastic  knife fight with Marshall Teague. Were those metal stunt knives? The whole thing looked scary-real.

    ReplyDelete
  70. I also have to give props to the Nate-Eliot scenes. This show does a nice job drawing distinct relationships between all the different members of the team, and there's a unique emotional heft to so many of the scenes with Hutton and Kane. They seem to really dig in on the mutual respect and understanding that the characters have of each other, so it's nice when the episode calls for that to be highlighted.

If you guys have a Season 6, might there please be a pre-series Nate/Eliot episode?

  72. 1)It seems like Eliot bring in most of the personal cases – a lot of the times, one particular character will get attached to a case after it comes in, but Eliot so far is the one who has brought in the most aside from maybe Nate himself, most of those cases Nate hears about from other people who bring them to the team for him. Eliot is the one who actually acknowledges the people he knows and says “These are good people and this should be a job.” Any reason for that, character wise?
    2)What was Parker reading?
3Is Hardison going to regret that whole tip thing later in the season? That seems like it should be a running joke, considering how much stuff he orders.
4)What happens to the old chef when there is no show and there are no strippers? Does he just try to get his old job back confused or slink away in misery or what?
5)What made Nate give up on helping Parker? His exasperation seemed kind of quick especially since it was obvious Parker was so…distraught, (for Parker, at least.)
6Was the techno pop theme playing while Hardison and Eliot were arguing their theme song from the car chase? It sounded a bit out of place until I realized it sounded a bit familiar…
7)Poor Chef Eliot just laying on Stonerboy and squeezing the strawberry – hilarious.
8How did it end up being Eliot and not Sophie that Parker went to with her feelings problem? (Character wise and writing wise…) Normally when she wants to be “normal” or understand people she asks Sophie for advice. Was it the “It makes us, us.” (From Long Way Down) principle in action?
9)Please tell me where the hell the N was in Nate’s alias? Please.
10)What part of the U.K. was Rebecca the co-op lady suppose to be from? I recognize the accent, (sort of) but I don’t know the location.
11)How did Lampart not realize how badly he got screwed in Nate’s version of the truffle deal? He was a full four pounds light…
11)I’ve noticed this a bit lately, I think everyone has, but specifically in this episode is Nate pushing Hardison (thief-wise) and Sophie (mastermind-wise) in this episode or did it just happen that way because of the plan?
12)Please tell me what was in the students’ mind during the French mooks cooking prep/beatdown moments?
13)What were the black noodles again? I couldn’t hear Eliot’s very complicated explanation of what they really were.
14)How did Rampone (?) not recognize Eliot earlier? I went back and checked, Eliot did attempt to turn away every time they ran into each other, but he looked him dead in the face at least once when Eliot was doing something extremely sketchy in the freezer, and I think a couple of more times. He didn’t seem to have any sense that something was familiar until the knife fight.
15)Eliot left his meal. Was it because it was a bit blood splattered?
16)Was Eliot really debating killing Rampone or was it all just show? If it was show, why? If it wasn’t, how close did he come?
17)Head pat on kid’s head, again very cute and very Eliot.

Yaaay Leverage is back ! I love the show, and I love this blog ^^
I enjoyed this episode but not as much as the previous one, probably mostly because I got confused on the scam (see later question). But I've also been doing a little S2/S3 Leverage marathon this week-end, so in that context, two^H^H^Hthree questions :

    - A few years ago I heard a report (on French radio) about truffles, and about how there was this Chinese species of truffles which is 1) very common, i.e. cheap and 2) terrible-tasting that was flooding the market and replacing the "good" truffles that grow in France and Italy. Once I saw this episode was about truffles I somehow expected this to come up, and in fact if occurs to me such cheap-but-terrible truffles could have helped Nate pad out the 16 pounds to 20... Did this issue come up during your research at all, and did you consider using it if so ?

And given the plot didn't include a scam on truffle quality but appeared to be a straight-up "guy smuggles in product that the US bans or over-taxes the import of" affair, why did the guy try to leave the country with that bag of truffles ? Did he hope he wouldn't be spot-checked ? When he talked about how they couldn't arrest them was he bluffing and hoping they wouldn't know the law ? I mean, if he was smuggling truffles into the country in the first place surely he knew he'd get in trouble if they were found in his bag, no ? Or had he just gone off the deep end and saying the first things that went through his head ? (charcoal briquettes ??)

And the other thing that confused me was Parker's story; I mean, as others have said, isn't thieving "her thing" ? Having just watched the Rashomon job and her doing her happy dance when she gets the knife it surely looks like she's feeling something. And in the Studio Job that was an actual tear on her cheek listening to Eliot sing.
Is it the significant thing here that she's actually trying to explore her emotions where she usually ignores, denies, or represses them ? Or does she want a hobby, to branch out from her laser focus on thieving ?

And while I'm remembering S3, I'd forgotten about that flashback to Eliot in Home Ec. Has he always had a passion or inclination for cooking, or was that just a random class he took in high school and his real passion for cooking came in the story he tells in this episode ?

(Oh, and Eliot and Parker cooperating over the earbuds to create the perfect dish was adorable)

Given the extent of Christian Kane's fight training through the course of the show, what's his capacity to win a real brawl? Does the choreography make practical application tricky, or is it just a matter of gauging distance between fist and opponent?

  77. Are there any standing writers room debates about food? Molecular Gastronomy versus traditional cooking?

Also, where did this film? Because I've got a friend going for her pastry degree in Portland and if this happened at her school and she didn't tell me...

A bit off-episode. I'm set to be the Fixer for a Leverage RPG and wonder if there's a consistent source of ideas for villains you might be able to recommend?

I was wondering if Hardisons style of high tech cooking and liberal use of liquid nitrogen was influenced by Heston Blumenthal? and just wondering if I was the only one who thought Palmer and Sneeds small lady in charge and silent enforcer act was great and wishes they reappear in atleast a cameo.

  80. Great episode, completely LOVED Sophie's hippie chick persona! Is there nothing Gina can't pull off??

Question though about Nate's little chuckle after the mark said the modern world was about "ripping off some hippie chick" - Nate seemed to be saying "ohhh, you have no idea who you're messing with!". Was that the intention of the script, or improv by Tim? It was a nice ref to how you shouldn't mess with Sophie (from Two Live Crew)!

And maybe it's just me but Sophie seems to be fading into the background a bit..it's like she's not very present at the moment. Is this all part of the script or is Gina just taking some time off? Any chance we'll be seeing more fun from Sophie and/or a bit more backstory sometime soon?

Also, since it's my first time commenting, just wanna thank you guys for creating one of my favourite shows ever. I never thought I could be this hooked on something, I go on and on and on about everything and everyone on the show! Keep up the great work!!

  81. Rewatching a couple eps with DB Cooper last night, and I have to ask: did somebody punch Tim Hutton in that last scene or was he allergic to all those truffles he was sniffing? One eye was distractingly red and puffy in that final scene with Rampone and Eliot. Like, injury or medical emergency red and puffy.

Which also brings to mind, we know Kane spends his fair share of time getting scuffed up. Have the other actors had any major scrapes?

  82. ohideleSorry for the late post, but catching up on the DVR after landing a new job and Leverage was first on the list. Have to ask, how has Hardison NOT heard about Alton Brown and Good Eats? It's the cooking show that was made for geeks. I figured two seconds after landing in Portland at least (if not in LA or Boston), he would've gotten into the molecular gastronomy scene. Either way, as a fan of cooking, I LOVE this episode!

    Jalur Penyebaran Kutil Kelamin
