20,000 Dead

Seriously, Mother Nature, we goddam get it. We are sinners in the hands of an angry planet.

Entire towns gone. Millions homeless. Aid choked off in places because it's a political hot zone. Considering last month I blogged -- and we raised a fantastic amount of money -- for disaster relief in one of the richest countries in the world, for a disaster an order of magnitude less horrible than this, I've switched the sidebar over. As always, I'll match all donations. The only caveat is that I'm going to do a bit of research and find the most straight-line route to getting the money somewhere on the ground. It may still wind up being Red Cross, but we'll see.

Personally, I want to raise at least as much money for the Kashmir victims as I did for Katrina for a variety of reasons. However, knowing many of you went to the wall for the Katrina relief, I'm not going to hit you up harder -- I'm going to try to add even MORE value to the blog. It's incumbent upon me to squeeze a single buck out of the several thouand humans who visit here every month. We'll have even more screenwriting advice, more political writing, more sci-culture writing ... and I'm going to hit up some humans I'm working with for some very, very VERY cool geek auction items we'll toss up on E-Bay. I'm not promising a pair of Mark Waid's underwear, guaranteed worn at least once, but I think that's a very likely possibility. Particularly after our last party.

Now as I said, I'm pretty stacked for October so I wasn't expecting to produce much. (although The Crazification Factor has become ridiculously popular on the web, who knew?) This fundraiser will be open-ended, probably rolling into Novemeber.

So, back to work. And remember, as always, I'm not hitting you up. You find something amusing or interesting, drop in a buck.

Take care, and hope everyone within blogshot is safe and warm.

  1. I'm with you John, all the way. I'll pony up the same amount I did for Katrina and stick it to ya this time. I've seen several charities listed (Australian Red Cross apparently can react better in that region, Unicef, Southeast Asia Salvation Army, Reliefweb). Say the word and I'll log my donation.

  2. If you do find a particularly good charity for the earthquake relief could you post it to the site? I tried prowling around and haven't had much luck.

  3. With the help of charity Navigator, I compiled a list for Katrina stuff. Their featured charities for the quakes are (with % budget spent on program):
    CARE 92.3%
    Direct Relief International 99.1%
    International Medical Corps 96%
    Mercy Corps 92%
    World Vision 87.1%
Notables: DRI is very neutral and Mercy Corps lets you specify where your money goes. It's also worth mentioning that Charity Navigator doesn't index organizations that don't file a 990, which means many religious organizations are missed (e.g. The Salvation Army).

The American Red Cross (91.1%) is notably absent from the list. I assume this is because the page says that the Indian Red Cross and Pakistan Red Crescent are responding.

  5. Lordy, I come back from a news-blackout long weekend and someone's upended half a continental shelf again.

The Red Crescent of Pakistan and Red Cross of India don't take credit cards -- wire transfer only. Understandable, I guess, but aggravating.

DRI looks like a good bet here, so John, the receipt is on its way.

  6. Hey John. First time poster, long time reader from Karachi, Pakistan. Thanks so much for doing this. Things are bad here. I should be heading to the damaged regions myself in a day or so.

In case you can figure out a way to send goods instead, see if you can send tents. Yesterday I was told so far they have received only 4000 tents. They need 1 million at least.

    Thanks again.

I heard on CBC that the federal government (of Canada, of course) is matching public donations made to the aid efforts for ... the next month, maybe? ... can't quite remember. Anyway, just thought it was worth a heads-up, particularly if you want to go for the "quadruple your donation, for free!" angle.

John - great blog, and I'm thrilled that you're matching donations. I'm sending folks here from my blog, but I also want to point to a post I did after asking Shirazi, who runs the Light Within blog in Pakistan, for recommendations. In short, he recommended the Ehdi Foundation, and has been adding more recommendations since then.
