@HHGT

Well, you could go visit the Leverage Crew's past/other lives:

Tim Hutton in Nero Wolfe
Gina Bellman in Jekyll & Coupling
Christian Kane on Angel
Aldis Hodge guest-starring in Bones & Numb3rs

Or spend some time with Leverage guest stars:
Paul Blackthorne in Dresden Files
Emma Caulfield, Danny Strong, & Armin Shimeran in Buffy tVS
Alona Tal in Veronica Mars
Saul Rubinek in Warehouse 13

or follow Leverage writer Albert Kim (Tap Out, Stork, Runway, etc) to Nikita...there's even an episode during which Rogers & Downey get killed off.

There are many, many more connections. I'm just listing the ones I personally recommend.
Cheers,
Beth

Ya'll are crazy. But I'll try and recommend something to you: Jekyll is on netflix. A short BBC series Gina Bellman was in that sort of was a modern retelling of Jekyll and Hide. Worth watching. Ha. I even watched Silent Trigger with Dolph Lundgren. That was pretty enjoyable for completely different reasons (although for one of he same reasons: Gina Bellman. And she looks great in both of them).

The first three/four seasons of House are good. The X-files is the greatest show of all time. And is shot really well. Hm. Law & Order is good if you're into that sort of thing. Sam Waterston and Jerry Orbach are great.

You can watch Bones too, if you don't already. I feel like if you like Leverage, you'd like Bones. They are both very *ahem* liberal with the use of modern/futuristic technology. haha sometimes the way they show Hardison photoshopping something is hilarious. He'll just drag and drop an image from one window to another. Too funny. Anyway. Those are my suggestions.

There's also going outside and getting a Milk Tea with a friend. That's good. I like doing that. Little squishy boba balls. I also like to go to parties and run around with my dog (not at the same time). Except not anymore because she died of cancer two weeks ago. Dear brave booboo.

This has probably been asked already but I don't have to patience to read 201 comments...

Am I correct in thinking Nate was at some point seriously considering killing Dubenich? And did he make his decision when he saw the team?

@HHGT
I know the feeling! After watching Leverage, nothing quite compares. Here are some that come close for me: Person of Interest, Burn Notice, Nikita, and Chuck.
If you're in the mood for an already complete series: Veronica Mars, Birds of Prey, or Prison Break.
I hope at least one of those is able to help you survive the wait until season 5. :)

Was just wondering if you had any idea when the season 3 DVDs would make it across the pond to England? Also, huge thank you for making a show that my brother and I can both agree on!

Shelby said...

I have a question about The Radio Job, but I didn't think of it until after I read the answer post. I'm hoping you might still answer it. :)

You said that a lot of the reason why Jimmy was never very close to Maggie and Sam was because Nate kept him at arms length.
Based on that, was it intentional that Nate never let Sophie and the rest team have much interaction with Jimmy, or was that just a actor scheduling thing?

HHGT said...

@ R, Lauren and the Anon who gave tv show suggestions: Thanks! I'll check these shows out!

@ Anon 11:12 AM: Sounds like an interesting game. Though you wouldn't have to shoplift to have some fun a la Parker. Practice making homemade shims or lockpicks (mainly torsion wrenches), maybe? (Check your state law for legality first, of course, but in most states you're ok if you don't carry them in public.)

Izzie said...

@ the Anonymous who mentioned J Firecat and 'headology':

How did I miss that? I mean, it was practically written in blazing ocarine. *shakes head* I love Terry Pratchett! :D

@ HHGT:

I know what you mean. I'll probably do what I always do when I run out of canon to watch: Turn to fan fiction! (SOPA? What?) It keeps me from going crazy, okay? Or maybe it -makes- me crazy...Can't tell. It's like the chicken and the egg. But that's what I'll be doing this hiatus.

Some more questions:

1. Are you ever going to bring Amy back from the horse job?

2. And someone else mentioned the Michael from the San Lorenzo Job. I'd love that. Basically any familiar face is always a good idea.

3. And finally, how far are you going to jump ahead in the season premiere for season 5? I really want to see the conversation where they decide to move, personally.

@ Izzie: Good idea. Is there an active fandom (with prompting and filling going on on a regular basis)? I ask because it's always nice when writing fan-fiction to know that at least one person (the person who prompted it) wants something like it. The only prompts I have found on Leverage are several years old, and are only asking for drabbles anyway...

Ommigod, ommigod, ommigod! I actually did a fan-girl squee for the first time in my life when I realised that Hardison HAD to be talking to Chaos.

I didn't see the trailer from the week before which means I was completely unprepared for all the amazing goodness of this ep.

I loved every single thing about this episode, from the little things like when Parker landed on Lucille, too the big things like Nates amazing speech and the fact that he left the gun, turned around and just didn't care.

Rogers, you are now up there with Aaron Sorkin in my own personal pantheon of writers/geniuses.

@pseudo_meat:

And what the fuck is "Glenn-Reader"and why do they make every safe/vault known to man in the Leverage universe?

They don't make every vault known to them. Think the other way. First episode of first season told that they are the best. So whatever vault they named, Leverage universe knows it.
Seriously man it's a freaking TV show. Can't you sit back and watch quietly? You hope the story going on your way? Make one. Beat Leverage. See how far you go.

As for me a show has to be a little NON SENSE. Because sometimes REAL LIFE is also non sense. I don't know you but I'm feeling like Eliot right now.

Denny S. Bryce said...

@HHGT a show I just started watching - this weekend:) all two seasons to catch up - was Justified on FX (excellent show, well written, hardcore, though. Not light fun, although there are some good laughs.)

also for @HHGT - for fanfiction join LiveJournal and check out the leverage communities - some really excellent fanfiction there and games and lots of Leverage fun you might enjoy until the DVDs for season 4 are released (commentaries-sigh).

Lydia said...

@HHGT,

I would reccommend Person of Interest - I love it almost as much as Leverage. I believe John might have even mentioned it on here. It has a similar premise to Leverage, they help people, and kick ass along the way. Caviesel's character, John Reese reminds me a lot of Eliot. Kevin Chapman, who played O'Hare in the Beantown Bailout Job, has a recurring role.

Pysch, if you're not already watching it. I caught some old reruns and liked the show.

Depending on how supernatural you want to get, you might like Grimm. It's filmed and takes place in Portland, OR. It also has had quite a few of the Leverage alumi.

Izzie said...

@HHGT:
Try comment-fic at LJ. They're a multi-fandom prompting community, where you can find just about anything. I mean it. Any fandom, any pairing, any *ahem* kink, any prompt. Crack, romance, angst, adventure, you name it. But word of warning: It's very addictive. Once you pop, you can't stop.

If you're looking for only Leverage there, you can search its Delicious bookmarks by tag, for both prompts and stories.

Does that help?

@CL and @pseudo_meat

I see what pseudo_meat is saying, and even found it rather humorous. But, pseudo_meat, you have to understand that Leverage is on basic cable. Which means they need to write to their audience. Which means (I hate to phrase it like this) dumbing down a bit of the content. Or rather, making it accessible to the "laymen" (or, I suppose, "average viewer"). Of course the technology on the show isn't going to compare to its real life counterpart in any way that will leave a tech-savvy person satisfied. And you also must remember, they're writing roughly 17/18 heists a year. And each one has to be different form the previous heists(which is now a number in the 60's) while simultaneously juggling the character development. All the while being easy to follow for all viewers (ages 18-49). I'm not making excuses for Leverage, as that would imply excuses must be made. Rather, I'm explaining how the writing staff and production team of Leverage deal with all of these things and still manage to achieve entertaining and rewarding story lines. But I don't have to tell you that. After all, you're watching it, aren't you?

As for, CL. Calm down. Don't get angry over TV or people who disagree with your opinions over the internet. That will only lead to unnecessary stress.

And to Jon Rogers: thank you for doing this. Such an innovative use of the internet. And, not to mention, a generous use of your time.

Anonymous said...

Okay I just have one crucial question. Seriously. Crucial.

When the Leverage team moves to Portland, are they finally going to give up on living in separate apartments? What I mean is. Are they going to just buy a house together and be each others room mates like we all know they wanna? I would love this. I would literally be the first person to marry a television program if you did this.

I watched this show casually until I realized how amazing the chemistry is between the cast and then it quickly entered my top ten. Love it. Also the writing's good. Thanks for making the show. That is all.

Dear Mr. Rogers, I know that you are not in a position to take decisions on broadcasting policies, but perhaps you could bring this up to the network: I am a long-term fan of Leverage, but I live in Germany. Till a few days ago I was able to watch the newest episodes the day after they were aired in the US. Now, with the closure of Megaupload and other servers, I will have to wait about one year before I will be able to watch new episodes. On top of that they will be dubbed in German, which is absolutely awful. I understand that the networks want to earn money and I would be willing to pay for viewing the English version promptly after its release in the US, but it is not even possible to do this. Neither Amazom.com nor iTunes nor any other commercial provider allows me to buy the episodes outside the US. This applies not only for Leverage, but any other US TV show. The situation is pretty frustrating and I kindly ask you to exert your influence with the network and let them know that the Leverage fan community is not limited to the US. Thank you very much.

Wait, really? Because I live in the UK and am able to buy them on itunes... And I could buy them when I was in France, too. Not dubbed or anything.

There are tons of places to watch shows illegally online. Not the day after. Like. An hour after. I know of at least three. You just have to do a little research. I'm pretty savvy with finding illegal content on the internet and I totally respect those who view it as wrong and choose not to pirate content. But the truth is, I don't really give a damn. I love Leverage and I would never want to hurt the show but honestly. I work my ass off at my job (physically and emotionally draining) and I make >20,000 anually. The only reason I don't mention any of the sites I use here is because I don't want to advertise them and bring unwanted attention. But seriously. Do a little research. You gotta comb through some message boards and b wise enough not to give yourself a virus (ask around about a site before visiting it) but pretty soon, you'll be able to watch whatever you want, whenever you want. Don't bother telling me it's wrong. I REALLY don't care. And I haven't heard any compelling argument that I'm hurting anyone. TV and Movies, as they exist today, and simply not fulfilling my needs. Period. I do try to pay the leverage crew back a little by advertising the show as much as I can and getting people to watch it. So there's that. Goodbye now.

Am i imagining things or did Nate con everyone at the end? I read the ending as him going all Doctor Who and getting his enemies to wipe themselves out.

The fact Nate had Latimer stashed where he did, along with knowing the team would of course follow him and take down the rent-a-goons to protect him, means the ending wasn't Nate deciding not to kill. It was another insane Nate Ford scheme. Sure he gave Latimer and Dubenich a way out (Doctor Who Style), but Nate would have to know neither man would take it.

Of course I could be way, way, way wrong about this.

@HHGT: You might try "White Collar" as a fill-in. It's kind of Leverage-lite, with a conman/art thief/forger working with the FBI, and it benefits from good cast chemistry.

1. When the team go on jobs in other places, do Nate and Sophie share a hotel room? I know they're not "dating" per se (and they certainly don't need to save any money), but I'm just wondering.

2. Speaking of money, what are the character's finances like? Nate donated most of his money from their first pay-out (as was revealed in the Homecoming job) and it seems like they mostly work pro bono. Also, I remember at the end of season two, they mentioned Nate would be "cleaned out" because of their dealings with the gun running stuff. Then in the premiere of season three, they used like 250k of his money to fool the warden with the whole senate campaign scam (and it seemed as though he may not be getting that money back because it would likely get tied up in the ensuing police investigation). So what is Nate's financial situation like? He gave Parker a pretty good chunk of change for christmas in Season 3 so he obviously has access to cash. Whenever he gets low does he just play the stock market like they did in the pilot (and like Laimer was doing--which Nate seemed to have a problem with)? If so, would he rely on the Hardison to do that for him since Hardison clearly has access to his accounts anyway and is good with that stuff?

I'm assuming the rest of the team is set for life money-wise (based on the pilot alone). Anyway, it's not a very compelling question but I'm just curious.

Thank for making this badass show. I'm about to graduate with a double major in Forensics and Anthropology but I clearly should have majored in Leverage...ology for how much time I spend with these characters.

Here's a totally random question about Maggie: Is Maggie a better hardware engineer than Hardison?

I ask because in the Second David Job, Nate chooses to use the button camera Maggie gave him three years prior over anything Hardison could design, and Hardison doesn't even complain about it. This suggests that Hardison's button-camera-designing capabilities lag Maggie's by three years, which says a lot, given how quickly technology develops.

Anonymous said...

Question:

1) I guess I had assumed back when Maggie was introduced that her primary skill when it came to art recovery was "running game" on people, like Nate, but given that she's just learning to grift (from Sophie) in Last Dam Job, I must have been wrong. Was she actually recovering art by hacking? (This would be compatible with (though not implied by) her being a better hardware engineer than Hardison, as I asked above.)

2) On an unrelated note, is Tara Cole also a hacker? (Or at least super-brilliant at cryptography-related calculations?) We saw that she is capable of recovering an encrypted message without a computer. I don't know anyone who can do that paper-and-pencil, even if they knew the (private) key. And the hard part of cryptography is figuring out the private key, or in the case of symmetric key encryption, figuring out the key.

That is, unless the ledger was encrypted with something less sophisticated than RSA (or AES, in case of symmetric-key). Which would be really dumb, because why would you do that when there are pre-packaged, tried-and-true algorithms you could be using?

If the answer to either of these questions is yes, then can we have the lovely lady come back full force in her hacker incarnation at some point? There are not enough lady hackers on TV.

I have a question about the Boiler Room job. If the Mako knew every shill and conman in the game, why didn't he know Sophie? Especially since he knew not just every grifter in the area, but in the entire country.

If you're answering questions about episodes for which you have already posted post-games, I have a question about the Boost Job: When Hardison says "You know, *** should work on that," after Eliot explains that even if he hadn't zapped his comm, it would still not function because he was underwater, was he saying "I" (as in, I should make the comms water-proof) or "you" (as in, you should stop getting submerged in water)? I listened to it several times, but couldn't figure it out.

Try Endgame on Hulu, Bones on Fox, or White Collar on USA.
Honestly though, if you're looking for smart, layered writing and heisty goodness, *nothing* comes up to the same level as Leverage.

Token Naysayer said...

Just a quick note about The Grave Danger Job: The ending didn't quite cut together very well, did it? I mean, you have Sophie and Parker digging Hardison up, they get a couple good shovel-scoops in before the guy with the gun forces them to take cover behind the tombstones. Then Parker does her little flip show (which seemed far inferior to simply running, really. She's doing some pretty slow cartwheels. You'd think it'd make her a much easier target. No offense to your stunt woman).

Then they take the gunman out, and SUDDENLY the casket is in full view, there's NO dirt on top of it and Parker shoots holes in the top so Hardison can breathe (which seems kind of silly to me seeing as how she could have just opened it and it would have been infinitely less... life threatening for Hardison. I mean the thing was already dug up. You can argue that she wanted to provide oxygen as fast as possible but if Hardison had not heard her instruct him to move to his left or if he had passed out due to lack of oxygen already, she would have murdered him).

I'm trying to believe some more digging went on off-screen but there was absolutely no time for it unless Sophie was digging Hardison up while Parker was distracting the guy (which seems unlikely because her hand can be seen picking up the gun after Nate punches the guy). But honestly, that's such a far-fetched scenario that I'd really have to see a shot of her digging in order to believe it. Especially since she would have most likely just opened the casket when she was finished digging and not just wait for Nate and Eliot to show up (are those things really hard to open or something?)

Anyway, I really do love the show. Obviously. Otherwise I wouldn't analyze it to such an extent. I think you've got a top-notch cast and some really great writers on your staff and I really enjoyed Season 4. Hope you have as much fun making it as I have watching it (and subsequently ripping it apart. kidding.)

This. Was. AWESOME.

I mean, I knew it would be, because goddamn can this show do finales but good. But that level of awesome? Damn. DAMN.

Once Maggie showed up I had to IM my friend (who I recently got hooked on the show and who, with their wife, is steadily catching up!) with, "This just got even MORE epic." I didn't even know that was POSSIBLE, but it apparently was.

God, that penultimate scene. Just. Echoing all the Doctor comparisons, I have to say. Very grey. Very, very well done. I am impressed.

Just...great work, seriously. God, I fucking love this show.

@pseudo_meat

I don't agree with like 90% of your comment (fair enough on Dubenich's actions in the Archie-Parker heist), but reading it still made me laugh. In a good way, I mean. I read it in this very fondly exasperated voice, and it just amused me, hee. =P

@HHGT

You should check out some USA shows! My favorite is Burn Notice, but I watch everything they do except for In Plain Sight (and I will probably give that a shot soon too).

Also, Warehouse 13! I recently devoured all of it (kind of hilariously coincidental considering I finished it all JUST before I watched The Radio Job, lols) and while my thoughts on that show are myriad it is hard to coherently articulate them beyond "AND THEN EVERYTHING WAS PERFECT AND AMAZING FOREVER." Ahem. But I'm reccing this one especially for the whole "chosen family" dynamic, which, I mean, Leverage has in spades, so I assume that's a trope you enjoy. :D

And, okay, I feel obligated to ask--you say you gave HIMYM a shot. Did you watch from the beginning? I only ask because I've seen people before mentioning that they caught one or two eps randomly and didn't get into it, and I had the exact same experience. Then my friends had me watch from the beginning, and it was a totally different story. That show is pretty self-referential and not really one you can just pick up in the middle, IMO. Of course, if you did start from the beginning and still didn't get into it, that's totally fair enough, completely ignore this! Just wanted to check, heh.

Um, other shows. Community is a million kinds of amazing. There's Justified. There is, of course, Doctor Who. There's Eureka, which I am in the middle of mainlining.

Shows that are done with but still worth a watch: Boston Legal, The Middleman, Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Sports Night, The West Wing...and I'm just gonna stop here because goddamn I consume waaaaay too much media.

I hope any of those suggestions might prove helpful?

hi, this is my first time to comment or ask a question. first of all, i think this show is great. i like how the characters relate to each other and the comedy is just crazy!

my question is with regards to the character E1liot. How accurate is the research into how this character should be portrayed? The reason why i'm asking is because, the character seems to be angry all the time. i'm a little bit concerned because all the other characters can control their anger and he can barely contain it sometimes. will there be a backstory somewhere in season 5 as to why this character is so full of rage? my husband is a retired military special force guy and he seems peaceful compared to Eliot. That's all.

John, you often talk about how much of a nerd you are. Were you ever a Fan with a capital F of anything?

It's slightly annoying that you have Sophie explaining what a Zanzibar Marketplace is in season 2 but then in Girls Night Out, you have Parker explaining to her what a Stop and Shop is. As if she wouldn't already know. I realize they may not be exactly the same thing (given that you made up the ZM), but Sophie shouldn't have needed to ask Parker such a fundamental question about the concept (when she asked why Mattingly wouldn't have the merchandise on him).

I'm starting to think TV shows should hire a resident fan who's obsessed with the show whose job it is to catch stuff like that. I volunteer.

Some quick questions about the Office Job:

Was "false emotion" supposed to have something to do with "emulsion". Did each of their decoy words correspond with a real, rhyming word? If so, what were "cheese accounts" referring to?

At the risk of asking too many questions... I am DYING to know... What is Sophie's relationship with Sterling (for example, did they ever get along)? I know you're not big on back story. But if you could just elaborate on their little "coup in Sierra Leone" or the time she spent as "Jenny" with him chasing her, I will compare you to a kiss from a rose on the gray.

I seriously am going out of my mind with curiosity on this one. Please don't tell me "whatever is most interesting to you." Because if it were satisfying enough to merely picture whatever scenarios are most interesting to me in my head, then I wouldn't need to turn on the TV in the first place. I'd be making my own shows in my brain. And they'd be awe.some. And you'd be out of a job. So I guess that means you HAVE to tell me, really.

IMForeman said...

I was thinking about the Reichenbach imagery to the confrontation at the end, and it got me thinking about whether Dubenich is really a Moriarty character... and I have to think he really isn't.

Sure, Dubenich is (not saying was until there's proof of that) a dangerous person... dangerous enough to have blindsided Nate twice, but once he's attracted Nate's ire, Nate has twice ran rings around him, using Dubenich's intelligence and anticipation against him.

Sterling is more akin to a Moriarty to Nate, in that he's usually depicted against him, and just as clever, if not more so.

And Nate has, to date, never really beaten Sterling. No, Nate changes his tactics when dealing with Sterling so that he doesn't even try to beat Sterling.

Whenever Nate knows he's facing off against Sterling, Nate looks for a plan that will achieve his objective, while also helping Sterling achieve something too, so that Sterling will be motivated to let Nate keep his gains. It seems to be the best tactic against him.

Sometimes, though, I wonder what would happen if Nate just tried to outright beat Sterling at the game. Would Sterling win? Would both lose? Would the collateral damage make it not worth it?

Whatever would happen, Dubenich never played in their league.

Does Sophie want to have kids? I was watching The Fairy Godparents Job and the way she talked about Widmark, it seems like she has a maternal quality. With the team as well. I don't imagine she'll have kids in the show (she can't really grift with a baby in the picture) but I feel like she would make a good mother.

-Lady

Anonymous said...

Going to go a step further on the question Lady (the anon above) posed.

Does Sophie have kids? (Was she married to William?)

You mentioned that there was a hint in King George Job about Sophie's past. Was this "hint" the fact that Sophie put her milk in her cup before her tea while playing Charlotte Duchess of Hanover?

@Anonymous (5:32):

I'm not getting the "Eliot is always full of rage" vibe. Yes, he gets angry with Nate when Nate is either off the rails or ignoring Eliot's concerns about safety (see: "10 Li'l Grifters" and "15 Minutes"), but that, IMO, is totally justifiable because when Nate goes off the rails, bad things happen. Like "we could all die or go to prison here" bad. And since it's Eliot's job to keep them safe, he's entitled to get pissy when Nate screws with that.

Otherwise, I'm not seeing the constant rage. He gets irritated and snarky with Hardison, but it's very much a sibling thing. And Parker irritates him sometimes because, well, Parker.

If anything, I think he's been more laid-back this season than ever; certainly more so than last season, when he was understandably edgy, what with that whole Moreau thing hanging over his head.

I don't think he's about to go postal.

Anonymous said...

To the above poster, I agree with the anonymous from before. It totally doesn't bother me but Eliot is absolutely not zen. He snaps about everything. From Parker poking him to Hardison being Hardison. He's not really what I would expect from a trained assassin because he lets his emotions get the better of him so often (by emotions, I mean emotion. It's just the one). I think it's part of the character's charm though. He's not just a tool for killing. He's got a lot of personality. And I never thought to mention any of this before because I figure it was just me but it's nice to see that someone else has noticed this about him. It kind of got on my nerves when i started watching the show but I actually like that about him now.

Anonymous said...

What did Parker mean in the The Lonely Hearts job when she said "oh I get it, Sophie's not the noblewoman, she's the challenge." I know you didn't write it but that line confused me because I wasn't sure how that changed the fundamental understanding of the situation. Spell it out for me?

-Greg

Greg said...

Oh one more question. Also, I realized we don't have to write our names at the bottom like a lot of people have been doing. You can just check the "Name/URL" bubble and type your name in there, if anyone is curious.

So here's my second question: Will you define what Sophie and Nate are in season 5 (if they weren't "dating" in season 4)? Were the two of them more involved with each other than they knew or should we just take their word for it that they truly are "friends with bennies"?

And are you working toward something with Parker and Hardison or are you just playing it by ear? I don't really want for anything I'm just curious (not that TV writers should be taking requests anyway). I love that Eliot is sort of a ladies man outside the team so I won't ask about his relationship status.

AMarie said...

About Nate never saying "Ex": Does this maybe have to do with the fact that Sophie was off-limits for a long time and he got into the habit of mentioning his marriage a lot as a sort of reminder? (to himself or her)

Have you heard of the Hacker Typer? It's hilarious and reminds me of what Hardison does on the show. It's basically an html program that, when you type into it, it looks like you're hacking.

so what was the relevance of "give me everything you have on this man" during "The Queen's Gambit Job" to the end of the season?

Review of Girls Night Out that really touched on some issues I had with the whole tandem episode thing:

http://www.hex19.com/blog/leverage-the-girls-night-out-job-review.html

And yeah. It was bullshit that you had Parker and Sophie call Hardison. It's like saying "here's how the girls would run a con by themselves. Oh wait. They can't."

Ree VR said...

1. Is it at all possible that Sophie's English accent is fake? The thought just occurred to me that maybe she's not actually British. Just wondering if that's something you've considered.

2. You say you don't want to give too much away about the characters because it will inhibit what you can do with them in the future but do you think, by the end of the series (if all goes according to whatever plan you may have), we might know a bit more about each of their backgrounds? I really hope so. I don't need it all at once, but I would love to know more about certain members of the crew.

P.S. Tell Gina Bellman I love her about as much as a total stranger can love someone on TV. I don't have a Twitter, otherwise I'd tell her myself. Thanks.

After re-watching season 4 with bunch of fans, we all noticed same thing. Nate is no longer "living" character ( sorry for bad english) His words are not followed with his actions ( or even with reactions and facial expresions) In "Maltese falcon", he said to them that they're his family, but we don't SEE it. All affection goes one way only - to Nate himself, he doesn't seem to return it. It's pretty annoying. And also it's not convincing. Nobody wants overreacting, or drama, but when your friend or family goes into something dangerous, just one look, one second is enough to show audience that he CARES - and that care we don't see (except for Sophie). Show, don't tell :D It's bad when audience is annoyed with main character. After all, 90% of us is watching because of great characters, not because of plot.
Greetings from Croatia fans (19 of us watching your show together, and enjoying it very much))

Sophie's specialty is the long con. Is she ever going to be able to do one of those again or are those days over? It seems like the crew only spend days with the mark (maybe weeks, but that's never been clear) so I'd be interested to see them do a long con. I'm not sure how you would do that but it would be really cool to see Sophie back to her old tricks.

And I second the costume department Q&A idea.

Gruntilda said...

Serious question: how many times has Nate been shot?? Sophie shot him in the past, Last Bank Job, Maltese Falcon, and now Last Dam Job. So four times? Or are there more possibly that we don't know about? That man is just Swiss cheese now!

Finale question: Why would they put the bomb in the emperor's sword? They couldn't know that Dubenich was going to put the sword in the vault. They could have blown up a bunch of people. Why didn't Parker plant the bomb in the vault when she stole all the money and diamonds? Also, why did Dubenich put the sword in the vault? If he was so worried that something would be stolen from the vault, why would he put something in it?

Also, I must say I'm kind of disappointed with Sophie's lack of involvement in the con. I know that, as a grifter, there wasn't much she could do because they knew her face but it still kind of sucks. If this had been the series finale, their last hurrah, it would have completely sucked not getting to see Sophie do anything bad ass. It would have been cool to see her manage to grift in spite of them knowing her face because she's just THAT good (similar to the idea of her not getting recognized at her own funeral because she's "acting"). She just seemed kind of tired throughout this finale. If this were the series finale, I would assume she intended to retire soon after that.

Bravo for bringing Dubenich back! The transition from Latimer to Dubenich was so seamless that I'm surprised it hadn't been your intention all along.

Great episode!

One question, though: Is Sophie's speech about dealing with murderers a little hypocritical? In The Rashomon Job, wasn't it dumb luck that Hardison stepped in, so Sophie didn't kill end up Bioko with shrimp juice?

(Also do Sophie and Nate not know about the two guys Parker and Hardison left in the train carriage in The Big Bang Job?)

Anonymous said...

Wow lots of Sophie questions. That's great, I feel like she's usually got the least vocal fans (aside from a few). To build on that, I just want to use this opportunity to say that I think it was a really odd choice to give Parker the ability to be just as much of a sexy temptress as Sophie. I love Sophie, but she brings nothing new to the table anymore. In season one, with Parker dressing in all black and acting bizarre alongside Sophie who is the polar opposite, smooth, sexy, and charming. But now, Sophie does not possess any skills that the others do not. I totally get that I sound like a whiny fan but and I don't mean to complain but I just want to say that I would love to see an episode that reinstates Sophie in not only possessing skills the others do not have but also in the sense that she's the best grifter of the group. Awesome finale, thanks for making a great show that sparks so much passion among the fanbase.

Not sure if this has already been asked/addressed, but can you tell us anything about the iPad app? It served its purpose brilliantly, as I made sure to watch live. And then imagine my happiness when it syncs the audio to the show, meaning I can watch it again weeks later! Kudos to whomever dreamt it up, and more kudos to whomever wrote it.

I have a question about Sophie's past. I know you can't answer directly but can you at least tell me if I'm on the right track? In the King George Job there was the mention of that William fellow that most fans seem to think was a former Lover/Husband of Sophie's. But when I first saw it, I assumed William was an older guy like closer the age of the Countess of Kensington and that he loved Sophie as a daughter. So will we ever get an answer about this? You say you don't have a set-in-stone back story for the characters but I assume you have the whole Charlotte/duchess thing.

I actually have another question. Why did they forge the diary in that episode to begin with? Couldn't they have just stolen a diary of a young woman from the same era? It's not like he read it and they didn't need to fool him for more than a few minutes anyway. It would seem far less risky to just replace it with an authentic colonial diary. Anyway, I LOVE that episode so I don't really care.

Thank you so much for answering our questions! You and all the writers are awesome!

please instruct Christian to cut his hair. I know people say they'd hate it but they'd get over it (and would come to love it) and I think it would be awesome to do something new! It'd be sweet to see him lookin all fine with short hair. You ever seen him in Angel? The boy was FINE. Cut it! Hair grows back! Felicity's hair looked super dumb when they cut it, that's why the ratings dropped. But Christian we already know looked.... mm. Also it doesn't have to be too short. It could be like O'Connell from The Mummy. B-Fras was looking FIIINE in that movie with that hair. Damn. cut it. 'nuff said.

This has been my question since I started watching this show: if Nate is the mastermind, and we're to believe he used to be an honest man and that the loss of his son propelled him into an [alcohol fueled] quest for vigilante justice... then why didn't he just steal something when his son was dying to pay for his treatment? I imagine he was desperate enough and I'm sure, despite being an honest man, he could rationalize it in such a desperate state. Was he just too straight-and-narrow back then? I suppose the death of a child would compel you to do things you never thought you could before, but wouldn't the threat of death be the same? I mean, he could have even asked one of his rich friends for the money. Like Sophie? Maybe I'm deriving my question to much from the emotional roller-coaster ride John Q.

Why isn't there a season 1 gag reel??

Chelsea said...

I heard you in the podcast saying that Felicity is the reason you can't cut Eliot's hair. But honestly, if the precedent of other shows mattered that much, Sophie and Nate wouldn't be together. Not after MOONLIGHTING! (blah blah "moonlighting curse" blah) But I love Sophie and Nate together. It works. And I site Leverage as a good example of how to put two leads together in my Narrative TV class. Bruce Willis and Cybil Shepard hated each other (or so I've read). Their chemistry was all weird after they got together. And Felicity looked like a MONCHICHI when they cut her hair! Those examples from those shows are so anecdotal and I'm sick of showrunners using the annals of television to stop them from taking any cool risks.

I debated whether or not to say this part because it sounds catty but... I just think Christian looks ridiculous with the long hair. I know I'm in the minority and I respect that. But honestly, my sister and I said we would never watch "the show with the goofy-looking long-haired guy in it" when Leverage first came on. I have since given the show a chance and LOVED it. But I still cannot get her to watch it with me. She literally will not be in the same room when it's on (yes she's being a bit dramatic). His hair is just... it's feathered! I honestly can't believe any man on earth could think their hair would look good like that. Maybe if it was all one length like Aragorn and had some waves in it. But no! haha it's straightened and LAYERED. I can't believe itttt and I cannot. will not. take Eliot seriously with that hair. And when I watch the show with friends who have never seen it, I always have to explain his hair to them and defend it somehow because they always laugh. His character, if I'm being honest, is made a little weaker by the hair. But that's okay because I love the other characters enough to make up for it. So whatever you decide is fine by me. I just don't think you should make up your mind based on Felicity. Besides.

I know you were considering writing Gina's pregnancy into the show in season 2 but didn't go through with it. But I was rewatching the Beantown Bailout job and noticed Parker saying to Sophie "you didn't get a chance to tell [Nate]". Is that referring to Sophie's pregnancy that never happened?

1)Did Nate have the set-up Dubenich and Latimer explicitly planned at the start in case he couldn't kill Dubenich and or Latimer? Was it a back up plan that he actually intented to use or was it just instinctual for "Nathan Ford: Mastermind" to have a plan double ZZ, more like an afterthought than a real option for him?

2) Like everyone else on the boards, I'm wondering, is it really that big of a distinction for the team that Nathan didn't pull the trigger himself, but set up the marks to kill each other? What would have happened if Dubenich or Latimer decided to walk away? Nate would have basically killed one by putting the gun in the other person's hand. Especially for Sophie, a grifter, who knows how powerful a suggestion really is... Nate still planned a murder - he just used a different weapon. I guess I want to know the logic of the distinction.

3) How much is Archie planning to explain to his biological daughter about his...Parker? How was Parker going to explain the theft of the wallets and the candy if Archie hadn't claimed her in someway or another?

4) How did the team know that Dubenich would be getting out eventually? How did the team know when it was safe to stay in the apartment and when it was time to leave? Why didn't Latimer just have people waiting at the apartment when the team got back from D.C.?

5) How did Dubenich track the team's activity from prison? How long was he tracking them? How'd he know what to look for?

6) Did Archie just camera up every security guard he saw or just the one? And if it was just the one how did he know which one to pick?

7) How were there still items left in the vault after Parker looted it when Dubenich returned the fake sword to Latimer's vault? One of the vases that was in the suitcase was still on display in the vault when everything exploded...

8) How did the team fool Latimer? I get the generic motel room with fake Cayman Islands crap, but how did they pull off the view? Where was he actually at? When did Nate go back for him? Where was the Batcave? Was the episode moreorless set in New York?

Anonymous said...

In Season 5 Eliot have to be more incorporated in team's grifting, because he became caricature and simplified, almost stupid, especially compared with Hardison's growing role. This show needs more character based plots, and some serious danger. Childish bickering and naive plots will destroy it completely.

M. Cleese said...

Okay. Not to get in the middle of this argument because I don't give a shit about Eliot's hair but... Chelsea wasn't being "misogynistic". You clearly have no idea what the word means, random anonymous person.

To be a "misogynist" means you hate women. NOTHING Chelsea said remotely indicated she hated women. I think the word you're looking for is "sexist". Although I don't think she's particularly sexist either, given that she expressed she doesn't care if a man has long hair (citing Aragorn from The Lord of the Rings as an example), rather she has an issue with Eliot's particular style.

I would like to repeat, I DO NOT GIVE A SINGLE SHIT ABOUT ELIOT'S HAIR. I just... really don't care. All I ask is that people make sense and to know what their words mean.

I may be savagely attacked by a pack of rabid fangirls who have ignored every word I said except for "Eliot", but I would also like to add: I REALLY don't give a shit about what you think about any of the things I've said here. Period. Pick up a dictionary, learn yourself some English. My guess is you're too old not to know that word.

Oh also, to even the playing field a bit: Chelsea, I guarantee you Jon Rogers doesn't give a shit how long you think Eliot's hair should be (nor does anyone else here). Stop wasting your time. Good day.

Two things:

1. In trying to find this blog that all the Leverage fans have been referencing, I accidentally wound up on the Kung Fu Panda website. Was very confused for a few seconds.

2. This may stupid question but why doesn't Nate get back together with his wife? I don't ship them or anything (in fact, I rather like Sophie for him. out there, I know) but I'm just curious. Is it simply because it would be too painful with the memories of his son? I only ask because they seem to be very flirty with each other and seem rather comfortable in each others presence.

We live for the little moments and we just friggin love everyone in the show and everything about it. Rock on!

P.S. in our head canons Eliot has a thing for Sophie but ignores it because he doesn't want to step on Nate's toes. Just in case you were wondering.

Okay so I've already made one comment somewhere in this massive thread but I was on Tumblr and I saw a Leverage post that got me thinking about Sophie and a thought occurred to me: I [respectfully] really don't like Sophie. Everyone who knows me knows that. But I just realized that it's because she seems to be so all over Nate when he really gives her no reason to be. I can appreciate her as a character when she's functioning on her own (King George Job) but when she interacts with Nate, he just seems really annoyed with her or only vaguely fond of her. And it seems really pathetic that she's so aggressive and it kind of offends me as a woman. It may be the way Timmothy Hutton plays it but he just seems like he rally doesn't care about her as more than a passing consideration and I start to feel like Sophie is kind of a Bella Swan; she gave up everything she knew for a guy. And she'll do anything for that guy. Despite how his actions don't indicate he'd do the same. It's kind of sad actually. Because Sophie is so utterly badass outside of Nate. It makes me wonder if T Hutt has some serious problem with Gina (which I know he doesn't because they claim to be really close friends) but he didn't say "I love you" in the Maltese Falcon! I remember from ConCon he CHOSE not to say it. It was in the script Jon wrote! Anyway, I'm a Parker girl. I just needed to go on a Sophie rant to clarify for all the Sophie fans who've chewed me out over the past few years. I'm glad I could finally articulate what my problem is with her.

Whoever was doing everybody's hair in season 4 seriously needs to reevaluate their choices.

Tim looked like a homeless man in the 80's.

Sophie's hair looked dryer than Bob Newhart's sense of humor.

Eliot's hair. don't wanna get in the middle of that. But I do think his hair needs to be either longer or shorter. Right now he just sorta looks like Steven Tyler.

I guess Parker and Hardison were fine. They don't really change.

Loved the finale soooo incredibly much, especially Quinn and Eliot working together, Eliot's job proposition scene with them taking out the thugs just made my day. I really want him to show up again, watching them fight on the same side and Quinn's "How many fingers do you need to type? Round down." made me hurt from laughing. I almost broke a rib, I'm pretty sure. Amazing episode.

I just want to say that I thought Parker's questions to Sophie in the Grave Danger Job were really spot on given her flippant "death haunts us ever day, no matter where we are" speech she gave to the nervous airplane passenger in The Mile-High Job. It seems like that philosophy of hers is starting to bother her as she becomes more attached to people. And it's when I think about connections like that that I really see how awesome and excellently crafted this show is. I really feel as though I'm watching a character grow and, kind of, blossom. Good job to both of the writers of those respective episodes as well as to the rest of the staff for continuing to be impressively thorough on a show that does not receive nearly enough credit. Bravo.

Just watched this entire series in a matter of days. Not kidding. I have a question about the finale: when the government begins looking into Latimer's insider trading, won't their be an investigation into how he knew about all of this stuff in advance. And perhaps an investigation into a connection between all of the marks the Leverage Five have taken down? For that matter, when they take down a mark, aren't many of them highly motivated to look into the cause of their destruction? And in a country like ours, where the government is basically fueled by corporate money, they'd have a lot of incentive to look into these crimes, no? Are we ever going to see this crew fly a little too close to the sun? Of course they won't get caught but it might be something worth addressing for the sake of realism, right?

Anonymous said...

Question and comment. First, the question: might we see in the future that members of team ran into each other before they crewed up? A la Rashomon Job? Or was that the extent of it. I love flashbacks.

And comment:

I liked Latimer's "market correction" speech a the end of The Boiler Room Job. I was actually really proud of the show in that moment because Latimer's existence made so much sense and was extremely ominous at the same time. It's a shame it was all a ruse set up by Dubenich who didn't exactly prove to be such an formidable opponent. Did he really think he could blow up Nate's dad and not be prepared enough to predict Nate's next move? It's actually pretty pathetic. Poor ole Dubenich.

Anonymous said...

Nate getting shot in the finale made me think of when Sophie shot him in the flashback in the pilot. Was that the first time he's been shot? Why was he carrying a gun as an insurance investigator, is that standard? Where did he shoot Sophie? At first I thought he shot her in the back but not only does that seem extreme, even in that circumstance, but it actually looks more like he shot her in the leg if you watch it carefully. Thank you for a great finale and thank you for an inevitably awesome season 5!

1) What was Nate's mom like?

2) Are you done with the "Sophie was actually a princess" storyline or will we find out more about that? Does Sophie have family somewhere?

3) Are there plans in the works to meet Hardison's Nana? Or any of his foster family? Were there other kids he grew up with? Will we ever find out what influenced him to be so proficient with computers?

4) Will we ever see Amy again from the Two Horse Job? Eliot mentioned he has a Nephew so we know he has siblings. What is his relationship like with his family?

5) I suppose I should just make this a "will we ever see [blank] again" blanket question. There's not a single person I wouldn't love to see again. Chief among them is Tara. Then Sterling. I don't care for Maggie but that actress is excellent. I wanted to hate Maggie but couldn't. And I would really love to see Michael Vittori again. My god that was a charming actor. And I feel like Sophie was kind of drinking the Vittori Kool-Aid by the end of that one so I'd love to see her reaction to seeing him again.

I honestly love this show. I'm a huge fan of yours so thank you.

I have some seriously burning questions here. These fuckin questions keep me up at night (not on school nights. Mostly just the weekends. But still.)

So. Dubenich gathered everybody in the pilot to Chicago to hit Pierson up for their heist right? So Sophie just HAPPENED to be in that city at that time? If that's true, then it seems like Nate picked her out of convenience. Not because she was the best.

And then in the second season. Sophie happened to be performing in Boston? AND dating a guy who lived there? How long had she been in Boston? Was she there because she knew Nate was there? I'm assuming the others just came to town because of Sophie's play.

(Part 1)

I have no idea where to put this comment but I heard Jon mention on a podcast or commentary that he's a Left 4 Dead fan. So I'm going to totally geek out here and let ya'll in on something I've been thinking about: The Leverage crew in the L4D universe. Some arguments about which crew members would be ensnared by which special infected and other such speculation. Here it goes:

Eliot: I would have him charged. He's the only one strong enough (presumably) to withstand the blows. I realize all the L4D team members have the same amount of health and endurance but I'm assuming that doesn't translate from Leverge-verse.

Parker: She would be smoked. She's always repelling on rope and bungees or whatever and I thought it would be poetic to have her dangling from a smoker tongue.

Hardison: Hardison would be Jockeyed. Mostly for the comedy of it. Can't you hear him yelling for Eliot to get the thing off of him. He may not be the jockey's most preferred victim though, given he's so tall.

Sophie: Sophie would totally be boomered. She's such a princess. After hearing her complain about Midwestern cuisine and the "whiffy" van, It would be kind of hilarious to see her covered in zombie vomit. The subsequent horde attack might not be so hilarious though. Good luck, Sophie. Stand in a corner.

Nate: Nate was a hard one. I'm really only left with a Hunter for him. But I suppose, in a way, it's rather fitting. There's nothing funny about a Hunter attack. Like the Charger, it's pretty brutal. But Nate is a moody, broody guy. Like an attack by a savage, zombie, parkour-aficionado, Nate's pretty serious. And, not to get cheesy here, but he's had his heart ripped out in the past. Just... not quite as literally.

I've left the Spitter out because I find her disgusting but also because she tends to attack entire groups or someone who's already down. So this would apply to everyone.

Who would startle the Witch: Well. I've really only got two compelling options...

Eliot: Eliot, as we all know, has a deep connection with children. I won't speculate as to why (though wee all have our ideas) but he seems to empathize with them especially and comes to their aid fiercely. I can see him coming to the rescue of a crying young girl, only to reveal she's a bloodthirsty and relentless she-demon.

Sophie: in the Lonely Hearts Job, the old guy starts crying and Eliot and Nate immediately think to get Sophie. She's expected to be the emotional center of the group and there's a reason she greets the distraught victims with Nate in the beginning of each episode. The team really relies on her to be emotionally available when they're no. And considering the Witch is a *half-naked* crying young girl, Eliot may not be the one to approach her, depending on the situation.

The Tank: Not really sure what to address here. The tank would certainly wreak havoc on everyone. Eliot would clearly do the most damage. Though I can see Parker or Hardison concocting a Moly to chuck at it.

General functionality of the team:

Eliot would be the most useful with a gun.

Parker could handle herself similarly no doubt, as she's always been able to take care of herself.

I see Hardison getting into a lot of trouble but he's a big guy so he may not go down a lot. And somebody's gotta be making those pipe bombs!

Sophie may not handle a gun so well but we've seen her whoop ass with melee items before on the show so she might prefer one of those. And considering, in the game, helping a team mate up requires simple moral encouragement, Sophie would be an unquestionable asset.

Nate, being the mastermind, would set the route and decide where to go and which shortcuts to take. Though I'm sure Eliot would have a hand in this because, as Jon once said on the commentary, Nate is lousy at escape plans/exit strategies.

RVRW said...

(Part 2)

Weapons of choice:

Eliot: Everything. Seriously. Eliot would likely change weapons a lot. For practical reasons (ammo, for example), but also because I can't see him sticking to one weapon after watching him attack a guy with duct tape. There's just too many possibilities. But lets assume he's got the katana out for a good chunk of time.

Parker: Can you taser a zombie? No? I'm kidding. We all know she loves the taser because it allows her to be violent in a socially acceptable way. In a zombie apocalypse, we're leaving social norms behind! Parker gets the AK and dual pistols.

Hardison: Baseball Bat/Combat Shotgun (The Morning After Job)

Sophie: Machete (channeling Annie Croy). Though I'm tempted to give her the cricket paddle given her origins.

Nate: M-16/chainsaw (he's got a lot of stuff to work through...)

Stats: Sophie would use the most health packs, and likely help the most team mates. Eliot would use the most adrenaline. The pills would be an even split among everyone. Hardison would use the most pipe/bile bombs as he is the most likely to construct them. Eliot and Parker would have the best accuracy. Hardison would have the most friendly fire incidents ("I was aiming for his leg" 'nough said).

Ultimately, Eliot reigns supreme here in L4D land. His job is to make sure everyone stays alive. And he's good at his job. The end.

Okay. So I've just revealed I'm a huge nerd. Hope you got a kick out of it. If I think of anything else, I'll post it somewhere below. Thanks for reading.

(Part 1)

Decided to embrace my videogame craziness even further and add a Leverage/Mass Effect mash-up (I'm ignoring the 3rd game for spoiler-free purposes):

There's no clear-cut way to do this so I'm just going to wing it...

Nate: Clearly a renegade protagonist if I ever met one (I haven't). His backstory doesn't necessarily fall in line with any of Shephard's options, except for, perhaps, the sole-survivor one, that would have certainly left Shepherd emotionally scarred in dealing with feelings of loss and being impotently unable to help those you care about.

Sophie: She's a Miranda-type. Nearly perfect in every discernible way (beautiful, genius, etc) but clearly has a ton of baggage that weighs on her. She oozes sexuality and uses it to her advantage. Also, she can be seriously dangerous when she needs to be (Annie Croy).

Parker: In some ways, she's a Tali. She's extremely competent and entertained by things that are beyond most people's grasp (Tali loved those engines). She's sexy too, in a completely different way than Sophie/Miranda. And lets face it, Parker sort of had a Tali getup in the beginning of the Inside Job. But she also has a Jack vibe, of course, being an orphan and having to deal with feelings of abandonment. Not to mention the fact that she was trained and honed into being the perfect thief much like Jack was made into the perfect biotic. Parker also has a bit of the quirkiness of Mordin (the whole "is she crazy" question), lest we forget that strange laugh she uttered in the Nigerian job as they all sat on the couch in Hardison's apartment. Or any of her other strange nonsense.

Eliot: Eliot functions on two levels. He's a bit of a brute, which leads me toward Wrex. But his subtle intellect and his mutual respect/friendship with Nate puts him in the Garrus category (particular his insight into Nate's well-being in the Long Way Down Job). One thing that makes me lean more toward Garrus is the idea of him being an Archangel. Using violence and brutality in a mercenary way to fight for justice, yadda, yadda. And of course, his abandoned military past (or police in Garrus' case) and his past regrets/mistakes haunting him.

Hardison: Hardison is tricky. He's down to earth and likable like Jacob (not to mention fit like him). Ultimately though, his particular personality makes him most like Joker, to me. Both Hardison and Joker were childhood prodigies. And they can both be simultaneously hilarious and cynical. They hardly take anything seriously, and work most of the time with a computer (or in Jokers case, works adjacent to a computer. And banters with it).

RVRW said...

(Part 2)

Obviously Nate has the team's undying loyalty at this point, but I'm going to designate particular episodes as "loyalty missions".

Sophie has a couple. The Wedding Job is probably the most obvious choice because it was still in a stage in their team dynamic when she needed to ask his permission to do a particular job (whereas now, I don't think she would have to try as hard to convince him). Nate had to decide to do this at Sophie's behest and once it was over, she respected him more because of it. There are other episodes that function similarly (and are much more personal for her), but this episode, to me, had a bit more of a loyalty mission formula. However it has nothing to do with her past so I guess I'll have to add The King George Job here. Actually, King George is a much better example because, if you recall, it wasn't until Nate saw Sophie brooding in the bar that he said "do you want to go to London?" And then attempted to resolve her inner conflict with her past misdeeds. Wow that's a much better example, forget what I said about the Wedding Job (I won't edit it out though because I think it makes my argument for King George stronger by comparison).

Parker: This is funny because I have two intriguing options for her. Both of which match up perfectly with the two ME characters I compared her to. Tali's loyalty mission involved [that outfit!] her father. Much like Archie (Parker's only father figure). So there's the familial past thing at play.
Jack's loyalty mission involved going back to the place where she grew up and trained as a child, calling back a lot of bad memories. Just like the Stork Job did for Parker. The Leverage team showed up and helped her liberate all those kids. Which was decidedly a much happier ending than the one Jack got. As an aside, it's very interesting that each time the team has helped Parker, she didn't ask for it or expect it. She went in alone only to have them show up and get her out of trouble (no matter how much she trusted them, as these episodes are three years apart). The only time she's asked for help was in the Jury Job and that was, presumably, because it involved having to talk to people which is something that freaks her out. Hm. Cool.

Eliot: Obviously Wrex didn't have a loyalty mission (and I wouldn't dare substitute Grunt in. He functions in a completely different way) and Garrus' wasn't particularly relevant to Eliot. So I can't connect the it quite the same way I did with Parker.
Eliot's loyalty Mission is more like Sophie's. The Two-Horse Job. He asked Nate for a favor, and Nate pulled through, ultimately helping him to resolve his past with Amy. Though, Eliot's loyalty is particularly hard to earn... might need a few more of those missions. Although, as yet another aside, Eliot is the most like a Mass Effect NPC. He's very professional and there to do a job. His loyalty can be earned but is not necessary in order for him to perform his job to the best of his abilities. Though it certainly helps if he likes you.

Hardison: Hardison is tricky. He has only asked Nate for one thing: and that is to run his own con. So the Gold job would have to be it. And even though it didn't go so well for him, I think Nate helped him with his confidence in spite of that and really nurtured him here, in his own Nate way. But ultimately, the Gold Job doesn't delve into Hardison's past at all. I guess we're still waiting on that kind of mission...

So there you have it. I actually have a paper to write on Ovid's Metamorphoses. But this has been a fun exercise in procrastination.

Okay, I FINALLY have a question to ask. I've been trying to think of one for months... yeah I'm not very bright. Anyway. Here it goes:

What makes sterling so different from Nate? I mean, I listen to the commentary and I read your blog and the phrase "Nate is not a nice guy" keeps getting repeated over and over. It's drilled into my head. And Nate acts like an ass certainly. So what makes him less of a bastard than Sterling? And why was Sterling chasing Sophie in the past different than when Nate chased her? Was it that they literally flirted more or...

I know it sounds like an obvious question but the only difference I can tell on scree is that Sterling is... I dunno, MORE of a dick than Nate. Whereas Nate is *kind of a dick. I just hoped the distinction between them would be more... morally driven. Your thoughts? I'm excited I thought of something to say to you. I'm a big fan!

Kelly said...

Oh! I thought of another question! I'm on a roll. Also, I'm watching The King George Job (my fave) and I'm just curious: how did Nate not know about smelling the statue. He recovered stolen art for a living, hasn't he had to smell a few things? Or at least witnessed someone doing something like that before? I mean, I love that he didn't know and that Sophie could school them on her own little area of expertise. While she's my favorite, sometimes I forget that she brings something totally different to the table because we don't often get to see her display her vast repertoire of grifter knowledge. Anyway, thanks for making the show!

Okay, so I was just thinking, this season we saw some real growth in the relationship between Parker and Hardison. It's obvious that they're starting to become much more comfortable around each other and even going out together on occasions. This season we also got to see some movement on the Sophie/Nate front as well and while they're not exactly dating as Sophie put it, their relationship is obviously much more evolved than Parker/Hardison. So, my question was are we ever going to see any sort of intimacy between Parker and Hardison? I'm not necessarily talking about sex or seeing them in bed together, but a lot more than just them discussing their feelings with other members of the team and having the random kiss (which, while great, seemed more for the mark's benefit in the Experimental Job than just to be affectionate on Parker's part). I'm talking more like how Sophie and Nate were in the Lonely Hearts Job. Being more open about their emotions and relationship status with each other. I know talks about relationships sometimes freak Parker out, but I feel like after Eliot's pep talk for Hardison to be more assertive, Sophie discussing the joys of opening up to a new relationship and love and Archie's approval, hopefully season 5 will bring at least a couple of scenes where Parker and Hardison do more than just stand next to each other like grade schoolers and steal random pecks on the cheeks.

Sorry for such a long post, but I just watched the Lonely Hearts Job again and really loved the way the Sophie/Nate intimate parts were worked in without it seeming to sappy. Hopefully one day the same can be done with Hardison and Parker (though probably not in the same format/setting).

Is the show color corrected really? It honestly doesn't look like it and I think it would look much better if more went into the post production coloring. I'm just sayin.

P.S. I'm a 22-year-old, film grad smart ass. Ignore me.
