LEVERAGE #414 "The Boys Night Out Job"

Honestly, the trick was to just point the camera and get out of the way.  Leave your questions, comments and snark for my written by/directed by debut here.

Can we please have Eliot's cute friend come back and wreak some havoc with Eliot sometime?

First off, I must say, AMAZING episode tonight! My favorite of the season so far by miles! I loved the scenes between Eliot and Hardison, especially Hardison freaking out about Parker and the thief.

I do have a few questions. One, was the parallelism between this episode and the 12-step job on purpose? The face off between the different gangs and the money "in" the car was really familiar.

Also, when Hardison won the rock, paper, scissors, did Eliot purposefully allow him to lose so that Hardison could have his moment AND Eliot didn't have to? A friend of mine thinks that Hardison actually legitimately won.

Thanks, and keep them coming!

Absolutely BRILLIANT episode, VERY well written and directed! I think this one's the highlight of the season for me. The big difference between this one and "Girls' Night Out" is that this one managed to mix its considerable humor with a level of menace that really worked, along with a plot that made a lot of sense.

The most hilarious bit in my view? "Rapture!"

The flashback scene toward the end seemed a bit confusing, which is weird because I'd been following pretty much everything in this one. It almost felt like in the editing, one or two bits went in the wrong order, and further, not all the scenes had the tint that represented flashbacks, meaning that we had to realize that those scenes were still in the flashback (which didn't take THAT long to figure out because of who was in them and when). Oh well... "Scars in fine leather."

My one question: Did Eliot truly charm both cars out of the guard, or did they actually access the detective who COULD help them before morning: Bonanno?

Anyway, fantastic job... I guess I mean, "Job". Do it again soon!

One more quick thing: It looked like Kane was actually cracking up in the BEGINNING of the RoShamBo sequence; was he? Not a complaint if he was!

DaveMB said...

Am I right that the actor playing the more cynical of the two Irish hitters was Australian? The other one was more convincing, though his accent went full Kennedy a couple of times.

Did the casting direction for Eliot's army friend say "looks like a young Tom Cruise"?

Sarah W said...

Mr. Rogers, you rock twice. Damn, but you can write. And direct.

Brace yourself--I'm gonna rave a bit.

So many good lines in this one, I can't even pick my favorite, but "Rapture" is in the top three.

Please put Robert Blanche in every ep you can. He's marvelous: "You get used to it."

And Shelley (Sp? And who is he? He's not credited anywhere I can find in a quick search and I don't recognize him, sorry) is great -- his reaction when he saw Hardison's soda? The Constitution line? Priceless.

Another Liam--very nice. And the boy scout conversation--excellent.

Eliot is a bit of an enabler, isn't he? For a good cause, but still. Did he throw the rock-paper-scissors? And I love how he snickered through the impound scene.

But the very best bit? Hurley and Peggy. Never saw it coming, but it's perfect. Absolutely perfect.

Excellent job, sir.

@Sarah W. Eliot's friend is played by Sean Faris. And I say yes please, bring that character back.

Great episode! Eliot was 11 kinds of adorable in this episode. I've been wanting something more than Angry!Eliot for a while, and we got it. Him being all supportive friend to Hardison with the way he (sort of) let Hardison take the lead with the Mexican cartel was really sweet. Then him playing Shy, Awkward Flirting Guy with the cop at the impound lot was just too cute for words. I just wanted to pinch his cheeks!

Plus, we got Detective Bonanno and Hurley in one episode. Win! This was a really fun episode.

Nekussa said...

Aww, Hurley+Peggy! I love it! Will we see them again? And won't he tell her that Nate and the gang aren't actually spies? They can double date with the couple from "The Boiler Room Job." :)

I loved Bonnano's line, "You get used to it" and his wink to the crew at the end. It sounds like some of those jobs that we never see because they happen between epsiodes have resulted in cases being dropped in his lap. I can just imagine Nate calling him up: "Hey, it's Nate Ford. Listen, you might want to be outside that warehouse on Moody Street in about 45 minutes. Oh, no reason. Yet."

As a Boston-area resident, I'd love to see more Boston shout-outs here and there. Hardison doing the Santa Speedo Run? The crew gets stuck on a disabled Red Line train between Porter and Davis? Mike's Pastry or Modern Pastry? :D

Thank you!

Leslie said...

So, a guy named Hurley and Virgin Mary statues filled with drugs...shout-out to Lost?

msd said...

YEE-HA! You do rock, Mr. Rogers! Again, there is nothing like an episode written by you or Chris Downey - sharp, funny - simply stellar!

Loved the Big Brother Eliot scenes where he lets Hardison think he is in control when Eliot is
systematically taking out the bad guys in the background. ("Let kme shoot him, Eliot" was great!) Also you finally satisfied everyone who wanted to see Eliot "get the girl" - nope, Hurley - she is not a nun!!

The scene with Nate conning the AA group to get a phone was wonderful!

One of my favorite episodes. Very well done!

Anonymous said...

This one was knocked out of the park. Great job John. The writing was great and the payoff, wonderful. I had a shit-eating grin on my face the entire episode. The interplay between the core group was fun and gratifying but I think what made it for me were the bit players. Bananno as always was excellent but Shelley was fun and the two Irish hitters, Liam and other were like a criminal version of Taggert and McSweeten (now that would be a hilarious episode). Hurley and Peggy hooking up at the end was sweet.

My question isn't with the episode per se but about the commercial TNT has been airing with the Leverage cast singing the Richard Marx song. I was wondering why the one actor who has a singing career wasn't featured in the commercial? Would Christian not agree to do it or was it a decision by the network?

Sprite said...

This was great fun! Thank you. My one question- did Eliot get a date with the lady cop, too?

james said...

Now that Eliot has had a talk with Hardison will we see hardison be more assertive? At times he can be really soft. Another thing I’ve always wondered is Hardison and Parker being together based on convenience (seeing as the team spends so much time together and they’re around the same age) or is it actually something organic “true love” in a sense based on something deeper than simply being around a person you find attractive. I ask because Hardison and Parker have shared a lot of “cute” moments but not a lot of "deep" moments that actually state how they feel.

Loved the casting of Sean Faris, hope to see more of him and Eliot. Loved the episode.

Awesome! The umbrella thing....it happened to me on accident! Mine exploded open on the front passenger seat while I was driving!

Might be kinda irrelevant but who was the policewoman at the impound? I know her voice from somewhere but I couldn't remember where and my ocd kicked in.

OregonBeach said...

Yes, I want to know about the Richard Marx thing, too. Unions and singers, or irony?

Real question: Was Sofia Pernas known to anyone prior to casting this episode (hey I know someone great for this part), or did she audition, etc? It would be interesting to somehow see her again.

LindaS said...

Sort of asked already, but how did Hardison get a second gold sedan when he was barely escaping the dogs when her tried to get the first one?

Gale said...

1) Possibly not the brightest assumption on my part, but are we supposed to think Liam's partner is, in fact, Liam's Brother? 2) Nate Ford is an impossible, awful bastard and I love him. You and Tim have done an amazing job over the last four years, and if people don't appreciate Nate Ford, Terrible Human Being, that's their problem.

Nice episodes, John. I about died laughing at the line about the nun's habit with no nun in it. THAT was funny!

Shall we start a betting pool to see how long it takes for someone to comment on the Pentecost vestments during Advent?

TheBacardiQueen said...

Was the scene with Eliot and Sister Lupe in the bar at the end scripted, or was that Kane and Sofia improvising? That was the best episode yet this season - please give us more episodes with just the boys!

Calla said...

I really liked the idea of the two parallel episodes - it can't be the first time the team has split off. I never did think they spend 24/7 time together, so it was nice to get an example of how that might play out.

I had a bit of trouble following the stories in this episode. I don't know why. I didn't have that trouble in The Girls' Night Out Job. ...hmm, it's probably me being tired. I'll have to watch it again.

It was nice to have both Peggy and Hurly in this pair of episodes - it makes their universe seem larger when it's populated with people they may see again.

Also, it was nice to see Parker working with someone who does what she does. And nice to see someone that Eliot has a working history with from the military - that part of his life has been touched upon so briefly that it could have been all dark during his service - all really bad stuff. It was nice to see that, whatever he was tasked with, he was still in a position to make and keep friends.

So, we got to see Parker do a bit of heisting with her new thief friend - will we get to see Eliot and Shelley doing anything non-poker related together?

Eliot was particularly endearing when he was hitting on the cop at the impound lot. It didn't seem out of character for him, but that can't be the way he picks up all the women he dates. It's endearing, but it is just a ploy, a grifter tactic, right? Because he wasn't necessarily interested in dating the woman, he was just there to distract her and to a second car out of the impound lot. Would he pull that same aw shucks routine to pick up a real date? Or would he do whatever he needed to do to get what he wants, job or no job?

Thanks again for these two eps - I think I will be watching them back to back as soon as I can.

Tom Galloway said...

So, where's the team these days? 'Cause at the start in the common section, Parker says:

"Remember Peggy from that jury job in Los Angeles?...She moved here *from* Boston last year, so we've been doing brunch..."

allyone said...

Although I have missed the full five these past two weeks, this was a pretty entertaining episode.

Kudos to casting - the extras arguing over whether the Church basement was holy ground, the creepy looking Callaghan, the decidedly NOT creepy looking Shelly (rrrowr!) and the lady cop at the impound yard. All made very nice additions to the action.

The support group thing was about as funny as one of those tropes can be. That no one would give Nate a phone, and then his whole speech - particularly the dig about them being self-important - was too perfect. Also, clever weaving of Nate's apology into his conversation with Eliot and Hardison.

The scenes at the impound lot were also particularly good. Hardison bickering with the lady cop and then her letting Eliot flirt were awesome little moments.

Finally - LOVED the Hardison and Nate scene at the end. It's nice to see some non-romantic relationships get a little time this season, and the dynamic between Nate and Hardison still has a lot of potential for development.

And, of course, HURLEY!! Nice to see him and Peggy end up together.

QUESTION: There has been a LOT of romantic development this season. More time has been spent on Parker/Hardison than any other relationship - romantic or otherwise. Do you guys see the emphasis on Parker/Hardison (and to a lesser extent Nate/Sophie) as a new direction in the show, and we'll see the same kind of emphasis on couples and couple development next season? Or is this just where the arcs are at the moment, and there won't necessarily be the same focus on couples next season?

Liz said...

One of my favorite things about Leverage, since season one, is how many guest stars I wish I could see in a spin-off. Last week had me imagining Tara and the handsome thief off capering (is that a word?) their way through Europe. This week I'm wanting to see Bonnano and Shelley as an unconventional crime fighting team, and I'm fairly sure Hurley and Peggy could have a sitcom. Don't know exactly how you guys pull that off, but I'm thinking it's a combination of good writing and good casting.

Much to love about this episode, but I'm short on time here, so just a quick question: how much dialogue, if any, was improvised this time out?

oregonlamb said...

As I tweeted ... Why another bad guy named Liam? Is it cuz it's just so Irish, or was it a callback to something personal?

This episode was great to watch Elliot and Hardison in scenes together is pure gold, they have great chemistry. Also Nate is a character you hate but somehow someway you find yourself wondering about his mind state. To be a mastermind means you have to be a great critical thinker and he has to do it under stress and tremendous pressure. Man I think the relationship between HP helps the team as a whole because you get that family give instead of we just workers vibe. But big UPS to the boys who represented!!! Favorite line " Of course I'm a racist, I'm a dirty cop" Simply Priceless

Judy said...

First and foremost, congratulations on another great episode. Aldis Hodge really stole the show on this one. If he ever had any critics on whether or not he could do comedy please just show them the Mexican bar scene. I loved Nate's coded phone call as well.

However, it was one of the more if not the most complicated Leverage plot to date. Would it offend you if I ran through the plot in my own words just to make sure I have it straight. I found myself absolutely loving it but having to piece together what I just saw.

"Let Me Go" Sophie's character smuggled cancer drugs into statues of the Virgin Mary and hired Hurley as a courier to drive them into the United States. The Mexico Mexicans somehow smuggled illegal drugs into Hurley's car without anyone knowing about it. "Let Me Go" Sophie's character found out about the illegal drugs and flew into the United States to warn Hurley. Hurley was supposed to deliver the statues to the Boston Mexicans and they would somehow get the illegal drugs out of Hurley's car as well without him knowing it. Either the Boston Mexicans were doing both good and bad work or the cancer drugs were just a cover for the illegal drugs. The Irish didn't like the Boston Mexicans honing in on their turf for the illegal drugs so they sent the two Irish hitters after Hurley to send the Boston Mexicans a message.

Hardison and Eliot steal Hurley's car plus a duplicate car from the police impound. Hardison switches the Mexico license plates off Hurley's car to the duplicate car. (If you wouldn't mind could you please fill in the blanks. I'm not too sure about this part. I saw Hurley drive into a parking space and then duck down. I saw Hardison's character do a fake deal with the Boston Mexicans. I saw Bonano make the big bust at the end but I'm not too sure what happened in between.)

I apologize. I'm not usually this stupid. It was just a complex plot.

Alayne_Stone said...

Nice episode! I must admit I liked The Girl's Night Out even better but that's just different shades of excellent.

One question/remark; The girls called Hardison several times to help out (even though eventually they did it their own way re:throwing the bomb out the window), but the guys never seemed to miss the girls at all? It just happened to be a job that didn't require a grifter or thief I guess, but still I would have liked a remark about how they could have used Sophie's talents in convincing the Mexicans or Parker's skills stealing the car or something. Cut for time, maybe?

And I join the other comments asking for more of Eliot's friend. He was great in his few scenes!

Sarah W said...

@MacSTL: Thank you!

Noa and Sean Faris need to be in the same episode. That is all.

Judy said...

I've been trying to process this plot again and have come up with another question. Why would the Boston Mexicans send hitters to kill their own courier? I remember either Hardison or Eliot saying there were two teams of hitters after Hurley.

Lydia said...

Can I just say that I love you? Everything you touch becomes instant comedy gold! I loved both of the "Night Out" jobs, but the Boys' was my favorite; definitely a top five episode (sorry girls, the boys won). It's great seeing Hurley and Bonanno come back - I'm going to miss Bonanno when the team moves to Portland. I'll join in the chant, please bring back Shelley's character in the future. Thank you for having Bonanno say "you get used it," that is one of my dad's lines that my family uses frequently. Great "writing and directing" debut, you have to do this more often!

Questions:
1. Is the green apple that Parker is holding at the beginning of the episode a callback to the pursuasion techniques scene with the apple and orange in the Juror #6 Job, where Parker first meets Peggy?
2. Just how much fun did Shelley and Bonanno have while the rest of the guys were out fighting the cartel?
3. Slight hitch in the fun train: Why is the second half of the flashack sequence untinted? I followed it, but it's a bit confusing...
4. This season we're seeing a lot of familar faces; is there any characters you would have loved to bring back in this season - or past season - that didn't work out story-wise or the actors were busy (who knew that there were actual human beings attached to the characters?;))?

LarryFleming said...

A lot of fun John. Congrats on a fine writing and wow, directing! I loved the Eliot/Hardison scenes.

David Hunt said...

1) Possibly not the brightest assumption on my part, but are we supposed to think Liam's partner is, in fact, Liam's Brother?

It's been a good long while since I watched The Bottle Job from Season 2, but I think that those two are the same Liam and "Liam's Cousin" that were minor character Irish Mob thugs in that episode. (I think it was his cousin. It may have been "brother" but I'm pretty sure that it was "cousin.)"

If it is them, then yes all anyone ever called Liam's Cousin in that ep eas "Liam's Cousin," even when they were talking about him with him standing right in front of him. IIRC, Rogers addressed this in Questions post and said that it's not at all uncommon in Organized Crime orgs for various members to be known by name's like "Jimmy's Brother" or "Liam's Cousin."

Nekussa said...

@Alayne_Stone: Hmm, good point that the girls needed to call the boys, but not the other way around. I suppose at this point in the series they can all grift and hit to some degree, but only Hardison's got the leet hacking skilz. Proof of how important he is!

ChelseaNH said...

Nate discovering a support group behind the door had me laughing in joyful anticipation.

@Judy: Hardison switches the Mexico license plates off Hurley's car to the duplicate car.

I believe it was a half-switch. The front plate was on Hurley's car, so the Irish mobsters would see it. The rear plate was on the duplicate car, so they would think they were chasing the same gold sedan.

Robert Blanche should be in every episode!! I'll even buy that power tool he's selling on that commercial I see every once in a while! Is there such a thing as a Blanchiac?? I might have to turn in my Kaniac member card.

Great episode!!

SueN. said...

My God, this was fun! As much as I enjoyed "Girls Night Out," this one just blew right past it.

Shelley and Bonanno, Nate and Hurley, Eliot and Hardison, Liam and Not-Liam ("How do you know the Boy Scout law?" "We all had dreams once," lmao!), Hurley and Peggy (tacos! cats!), Nate stealing an AA meeting, "Rapture!", Eliot getting both the compound lot cop and the hot Not-A-Nun, and desperately not wanting to give dating advice to Hardison … this one was just pure enjoyment on multiple levels!

Add me to the "Shelley must return!" chorus. His Constitution line cracked me up, as did his showing Bonanno how to do a choke hold. (This is how Eliot and his friends spend their time together, isn't it? "Hey, can you do this?") I was glad to see he finally got his pizza. *g*

I'd also like to see Lupe again. That was a nice twist, having her as part of a sort-of Leverage team that "liberates" medicines and makes them available to those who need but can't afford them. (Merck and Pfizer must hate you people, btw.)

And Bonanno … oh, man, will I miss him when you move the crew to Portland! I just love his character, and his rapport with the team. ("You get used to it.") I also loved that Eliot called him "Pat," evidence of the kind of relationship they've established.

I do have one question, prompted by Shelley's appearance. Do Eliot's buddies know what his post-Army career was?

Also, and not that I have any hope at all of you ever answering this, but I've really wondered … how did Eliot go from soldier to criminal? Eliot seems the kind of guy who would have been perfectly content to spend the rest of his life as a soldier, so I just kind of wonder (again, with no real hope of an answer) what drove him to change careers, and to make that kind of change.

Oh, and before I forget, kudos to you for writing and directing such a glorious romp. You are a mad and wonderful bastard.

Great episode!

First of all, did I hear right that Eliot's friend is named Shelley? If so I heartily approve. There aren't enough Shelley's in the world.

Loved that Eliot let Hardison win to go steal the car. The brother relationship really shined (shone?) in this one.

Bonnano is such a great character. "You get used to it." and the discussion on choke holds. Great stuff. And he took the whole thing with Mexican cartels in stride.

So how much scotch was involved with this episode. Writing and directing; it sounds like a writers dream but had to be a real pain logistically.

Oh man, that was such a fun episode! I lost count of how many times I literally hooted with laughter at the boys' antics. And you somehow managed to layer a lot of interpersonal development in there to boot. Bravo, sir.

Loved the various pairings, but I think Shelley and Bonanno was particularly great because we only see a tiny bit of their involvement and have to infer the rest. Plus, who doesn't love a good choke hold lesson? XD

On a completely shallow note, I could watch Eliot shy-flirt for hours. His normal swagger is hot, of course, but the "aw shucks" approach just gets me every time. It's a great twist on his many previous low-status con characters. I don't even care that it was just a delaying tactic for Hardison's break-in.

Peggy and Hurley... You're starting to put together the Leverage Lite team you proposed in the commentaries, aren't you?

@Nekussa: "Mike's Pastry or Modern Pastry?"

Was Parker mentioning forks, than looking at the green apple a call back to her stabbing and razor blade incidents?

And because it makes me happy, thank you for showing a proper rear naked choke. It was the first choke I learned in Judo.

Sara said...

No snark, just glee--this episode was awesome. I fucking love Bonnano, I can't even. Seriously, never have I adored a character with so little screen time as much as I adore him. (Barring maybe Canton Everett Delaware III, but c'mon, he's played by Mark Shepard, how can you not adore him instantly?) It is unreal. (Can he and Detective Grayson become bffs? This prospect delights me.)

Also, that one Irish hitman...I totally loved him, I have to say. Just lol forever at, "Some of us had dreams." and being totally against killing someone inside a church and being concerned about going to hell for roughing up someone he thinks is a nun...I have such a thing for criminals with their own particular moral code, thank you for providing. (...and I realize that probably sounds obvious, given the entire premise of this show, but I mean in a more straight up way. The team commits crimes as they help people. I love it when people who commit crimes for no other reason than it makes them money, thank you very much, also have their sets of standards. It's all so deliciously grey and fun.)

Oh. And love forever re: Hardison and Eliot. God, I love their scenes together. They just play off each other so. damn. well.

Basically, all-around awesome episode! I wasn't sure how you were going to outdo the Girls' Night, but I think you managed! Impressive.

Murphy said...

I think I loved this one more than Girls' Night. There seemed to be a lot more humor in this episode than the other one. On top of that, the con was a bit more fun, though the lack of girls in slinky dresses did make me a little sad. (Because, really, Parker, Sophie, AND Tara all together in dresses like that? Ooh la LA.)

There were so many great parts of this episode that I can't even begin to list them all.

It made me giggle when Hurley came back.

"Rapture!" was a particularly fantastic line that had both me and my mom laughing.

Just loved Shelley, and all of Bonnano and Shelley's scenes together made me chortle with glee. They seem like they could become good friends, all things considered.

The one Irish hitter was great, with his code of the Boy Scouts and everything. (My brother is an Eagle Scout, so hearing the hitter start to rattle off the Boy Scout code was fantastical.) And his whole thing with the church was just adorable.

Nate's face when he saw the AA meeting in the basement. PRICELESS.

Hardison. Eliot. Need I say more.

Eliot all shy and cute and bashful with the guards? Adorable. I wanted to pick him up right then and there.

The umbrella. Had to go back and rewatch it cuz that was such an epic move right there.

Overall, I can't think of anything to complain about. You even did the episode in such a way that you didn't HAVE to see Girls' Night to enjoy the show and figure out what was going on, which was pretty awesome. (Though of course I did see Girls' Night, and again I say; those girls in those dresses. Rawr~)

So now Hurley is going to get a stable job, not get duped by bad people, marry Peggy, and they all live happily together with their sixteen cats, right?

One question, though. The scene in the bar, where Hardison was doing the drug test with the cancer pills. The boys DID grab teh broken statue and the drugs on the way out, right? Don't want to leave those lying around.

Anyway, great episode. Loved it. Can't wait to see next week's episode, though it's hard to imagine it'll top this one.

Erin said...

Another fantastic episode! I love that you guys weren't afraid to experiment with format this season, and I think it's led to a lot of great character beats that might have been hard to find room for in typical episodes. For me The Girls' Night Out Job slightly edges out The Boys' Night Out Job, but only because the women had a deeply unfair advantage (rhymes with Sara). As a previous commenter said, shades of excellence, and this week was pure pulpy fun.

It was great to see Hurley and Bonanno again, and Shelley was an excellent addition to Crime World. His "To the Constitution of the United States" would have taken the prize for best line delivery in most episodes; unfortunately it was in this episode, so it was a strong third behind "Rapture!" and "So what, it goes holy ground, the basement, holy ground?"

Questions
When the impound lot cop said she needed a detective to sign off I was sure Eliot was going to say, "Well, as it so happens..." and call up Bonanno. Was that an option you considered at some point in the writing process?

Did Shelley just fade into the night Batman-style after helping Bonanno? Or perhaps did he get a text from his buddy Eliot with an address and the words "ask to see her gun"?

Amber said...

Loved the episode! Have to say my favorite part was when Hardison was complaining about Parker and the other thief and telling Eliot that the thief wasn't her type because she "likes her some chocolate"! I died laughing!

I love how Eliot and Hardison are together and the "big brother" Eliot is becoming to Hardison. It was nice to see him actually do something for Hardison without any sort of reluctance or sarcastic remark. It was just Eliot being a cool big bro and that was awesome!

Question 1: We've seen Eliot and Sophie give Hardison and Parker advice respectively. Will we ever see Eliot giving Parker advice about Hardison? Same with Sophie and Hardison? And what about Nate? He's been pretty hands off about the Hardison/Parker relationship, even though it's pretty obvious that he knows how they feel. Will he ever say something directly (or indirectly) about them?

Question 2: When we finally get some more movement on the Sophie/Nate front, will we see Eliot offer up advice to Nate about it. I feel like he would be the only one brave enough to do so. Hardison and Parker would probably be to busy trying to negotiate their relationship to deal with Nate and Sophie.

By any chance, were the writing team inspired by the pair of X-Men stories (Boy's Night Out and Girls Night Out) that came out in the 80s or 90s? My memory is rather vague on the Girls, but the boy's night out issue was drawn by Rob Liefeld and set in Australia.

first off, super great job on ur debut John.. really. i enjoyed it, done very nicely..
ok, for the questions..
1)what is Shelley supposed to be? a military guy?
2)when Shelley and Bonano were left in the apartment, was he teachin the detective some MMA moves(shout out to Never Back Down) the choking thing?
and just a comment.. the ending, when Eliot and "sister" Lupe were together, it felt like a continuation of Kane's video "Let Me Go" =)

Awesome episode. I loved how the two episodes came together. Also, when I get the DVD, it will be an epic two episode watching, as it was probably intended.

Also, as others have said, both the main and supporting casts were amazing in this episode.

It was so much fun! I wanted to watch it again right away.

1. I felt sorry for Nate at the AA meeting. Why would no one give him a phone? Poor Nate. Of course, then he got show off his awesome grifting that could take over the world if he liked. But really, maybe people in Boston are meaner and I am just used to this Minnesota 'Nice'.
2. What was the time elapsed for the episode? Really, I guess I mean, how long did Bonnano and Shelly hang out? They were awesome, although the choke hold scene had me a bit wary as I was concerned that Shelly was not a nice guy.
3. Is it safe to assume that Bonnano has hung out with at least the boys before, from the line "You get used to it?"
4. When Hardison was on the phone in the cartel's bar, did Eliot intimidate the cartel boss in an active way or just stand there and do that thing with his eyes?

DaveMB said...

Lindsey, when Eliot and Hardison were doing their 48 hours thing in the Mexican bar, Eliot was indeed "intimidating the boss" by simply neutralizing all his guys behind Hardison's back. It looked like Hardison, when he turned around, didn't even notice that the bar was now full of unconscious thugs.

I may need to rewatch Girl's night out, but did Peggy ever explictely mention that she liked tacos in that episode?

Otherwise all aroung good episode and nice job subtily setting up Jack's love of cats, and the scene where "Sister" Lupe steps out of her Nun's costume was hilarious as was Nate's explenation for why there was a nun outfit but no nun, too bad we didn't get to see him build on the "Rapture" theme for a while because something tells me it would have been hilarious!

For me - the most memorable part of the episode was the beat at the end between Hurley and Nate. You clearly showed us that Nate has isolated himself from the world - and even the team to some extent. For all his faults - Hurley is clearly in a much better place than Nate.

My questions:

a) will Nate's isolation result in a "consequence" episode next season?

b) the darkness inside of Nate, the isolation, the view that the outside world exists for the sole purpose of providing marks for him to take down in order to partially sate his despair/anger - would destroy most people. Will we ever see Nate hit bottom and start to recover slightly? Or is the journey we are witnessing leading to his disintegration?

c) in interviews we (the great unwashed) often hear questions asked of actors about how much or little the characters they play represent themselves. Which is a little silly, since actors are really portraying characters developed by the writers. So as a writer - how much of Nate's voice is yours?

Thanks so much once again.

What a VERY Leverage episode!! Genius!!!!!!

Gotta say I went awwweee at the end with Hurley and Peggy. They both seem so sweet together.

I wouldn't really exactly say I want Shelley back, but I think there must be a reason why he appeared in this episode? (P.S.: He's so HOT!)

And thanks for Bonanno!!!!!!! He's just unlike any other cop ;p

Great grift by Nate for getting a phone and what does the last "I love you" with choked voice means? Lol.

Keep up the good work!!!!!

@CL

(John can correct me if I'm wrong)Shelley's character is just to show that aside from Maggie, outside of the team, Nate doesn't have anybody to talk to - Sophie has Tara, Parker has Peggy, Eliot has his buddies from the service, Hardison has "Internet friends...even though they're all elves and gnomes." Nate, he's more secluded and by himself, which is punctuated the by the final scene.

ChelseaNH said...

@SueN: as did his showing Bonanno how to do a choke hold

I am a little skeptical that a Boston cop of Bonanno's generation needed to be showed a choke hold. (Okay, maybe he hadn't learned a proper choke hold.)

@Amber: [Nate]'s been pretty hands off about the Hardison/Parker relationship, even though it's pretty obvious that he knows how they feel. Will he ever say something directly (or indirectly) about them?

Only if it gets in the way of a con. Otherwise, he's trying hard not to think about it.

@Lindsey: Why would no one give him a phone?

Because he's supposed to be paying attention to the meeting, not yakking on the phone. Addicts know from avoidance tactics.

We were saddened to see that the improbable coincidence of the woman leaving her dress in the bar for Parker (Girls' Night Out) didn't have a pay-off here.* I hope somebody writes the fanfic detailing how her life was ruined as a result.

Otherwise, once again, very fun show!

@Lydia: Shelley's character is just to show that aside from Maggie, outside of the team, Nate doesn't have anybody to talk to

So the rest of the team set him up on a "date" with Bonnano? :)

Hehe.. did an Oregon Jury duty and in the movie we had to watch "Bonnano" was the accused.

I'm hoping there is a reason for some of the cops/FBI or "friends" to visit or relocate to Portland. Any talks about that?

That story Hardison is telling Elliot and Sister Lupe at the end of the episode, about someone getting a Jheri Curl--scripted or improv?

I loved this one. It's my favorite so far of season 4B. The only problem I had was in the last scene; that read like Aldis, Chris and Sophia hanging out in a bar on any of 30 or 40 nights that they've hung out in a bar together. Which was emphasized by the way Eliot told Nate he and Lupe were leaving. It just didn't read like characters; it read like people. And while it probably was people (and so what), it took away from the "Eliot is taking another girl he just met home for the night" vibe and left you with a vibe of 2 real people who happened to be on camera re-enacting a moment they'd been through a million times before.

Other than that, this ep was great. It was wonderful to see Bonano again and there was something just perfect about how little he actually appeared and what he was doing when we saw him. And I was pleased we got to meet Shelley and see Hurley. On the whole, it put them into a context that illuminated who the team are supposed to be, in particular it really drew a line between Nate and his father - they do the same things, but Nate saves Hurley and his dad would have found a way to trade him to both mobs.

I'd have loved to have seen an Orc though :-) Couldn't you steal a Felicia Day for a couple weeks :-)

But on the whole, you just keep makin' these John, that's what yer good at.

As much as I love the girls... this one was just pure Leverage-y goodness :) My sister who has a crush on Eliot was squealing half the time, ... oh well teenage girls,... whatcha gonna do?

Basically there's nothing I want to say about this that hasn't already been said, you are a genius Mr. Rogers and you know we love it when you can write or direct but when you do BOTH...epic-ness occurs

PS I know they're going to jail and all but can you bring back Liam and co.? They were one of my favorite things about this ep. - the Boy Scout line? oh yes.

Oona said...

Nice episode! I'll rave about one thing that hasn't bee raved on yet - THE MUSIC. From Hurley's song in the beginning to the little rock beats and Irish beats, all the music for this episode was great.

If you haven't already answered it in the podcast, did LoDuca put together that song Hurley was listening to in his car?

Also, while I enjoyed NotLiam's boy scout speech, my favorite bits were his satisfied lookto Liam when Callahan agreed it was a problem to shoot a guy in church, and then his delivery on "I'm going to hell," when he thinks he just held a gun on a nun. That guy should definitely restart his criminal career in Portland.

Also the snide exchange between Hardison and the impound cop just as Hardison and Eliot are walking away - seriously, that is 5 seconds of win right there.

A few questions:
-Since Nate and the team are known in town, did Callahan know who they were when they were driving out of the parking garage? Seems like taking down a major Irish mob player in the town you live in might be dangerous,no?
-It looked like Nate actually had a moment of something kind of close to happiness or peace there at the end when he's watching the team in the next room after he thanked Hardison. Is it a correct read? If so, then you're totally just ratcheting up the height on the platform (or should I say mountain?) He's gonna fall off of in 418 aren't you?

Thanks as usual.

Wow, this was a great episode! Loved the mix of drama, humour and ass kicking. The umbrella was absolutely awesome :-)

Eliot's friend. I seriously hope you bring him back. I'd love to see him and Eliot fight side by side!

Just one question. Eliot's rough bedside manners - was that your idea or Kane's? It was funny as hell!

Anonymous said...

Did Kane do his own stunts...rolling in front of the car? And was he about to crack up when Hardison told Elliot to back the Hell up at the bar?

Will there be more vent-sliding, pocket-picking, building-climbing, twenty pounds of crazy in a five pound bag, Parker soon? She is grifting more, and I love that, but am beginning to miss the old thief-ey Parker more...

Nice episode!

I love Bonnanno. I have loved him since Beantown Bailout; when he says "nobody's that smart", it's so clear that he knows what's up. "You get used to it". Haha.

Shelly was great. I hope he comes back. The last scene with the pizza... damn. I can see why Eliot likes this guy.

And oh my goodness. "Rapture". I just can't stop laughing.

My favourite scene, however, has to be the last one with Hardison. The fact that he's trying to look on the bright side in a world that can be really cold and scary just melted me.

(I also really liked the scene in The Stork Job when he reminded Parker that some foster parents actually do love their kids, and with regards to the ones that don't, that he actually likes how Parker turned out.)

I am seconding two other people's question about the rock-paper-scissors game: has Hardison finally learned to control those tells or did Eliot take a dive?

I really want the former (Hardison's so eager to resolve the dispute that way that it seems like he must have something up his sleeve), so unless it'll end up being relevant in a future episode, please answer that one.

Miranda said...

@Oregonlamb I was thinking maybe Bonnano and Shelley could move to Portland and start a Private Investigation business together :)

Anonymous said...

Thank you for a great episode. Man. You gave us Elliot and Hardison together; Hurley back at it; Nate at a rehab meeting (does anyone really know how much alcohol is too much?); the Liams; Robert Blanche; the value of boy scouts; and a nun with a gun. A repeat is on at the moment, and I'm laughing out loud all over again.

Katie said...

Firstly, LOVED the episode. I had been super excited (read obsessed) with The Girl's Night Out Job and then was surprised to find that this ep was quite a bit funnier and more enjoyable overall than Girl's Night Out. So happy to see Bonnano again, loved some of the lines, "Rapture!" and the basement=holy ground argument stand out for me.

A couple quick questions:
Did I see Parker making notes in Sophie's little red abuse book?
and
Does the team call Bonnano in situations where shit gets REAL and even their excellent skills can't get them out of it? Or do they mostly just throw bad guys at him for him to collar?

Devinoch said...

So I sincerely hope Eliot's friend is a new recurring character, because he was great. (More of the two bickering Irish thugs would also be welcome!) This whole episode killed it. I especially loved Eliot's inability to give a pep talk to Hardison. Now, most importantly, how the hell does Eliot pick up women that fast?

Anonymous said...

@Devinoch:

Re: "how the hell does Eliot pick up women that fast?"

You're kidding, right?

David Hunt said...

@Anonymous,

No, Devinoch wasn't kidding. He just phrased the question with less than total precision. The question that he (and I) want answered is, "How can I pick up hot women that fast?"

I suspect the unfortunate answer is "Be Eliot Spencer/Christian Kane."

Wrote and directed? You did great under both hats!

This episode was more fun than most- Bright spots were the whole beginning in both shows; Hardison; don't ever tell me the odds, (respect the swag, forsooth)! Rapture! (I'll forgive Nate a great deal just for giving that one answer to our poor boyscout wannabe;)
and Eliot flirting with the guard (asking if he wanted to touch her gun was a leetle OTT, but worth it for his little moment of panic trying to decide on a mutually acceptable answer, and the rest was perfect, lol!)

I was really glad I'd seen Girl's Night Out back to back with this one; they played really well together. I started laughing the minute Eliot let Hardison win the right to go get chased by dogs- but how did they get both cars out of impound in the end? I'd rather have seen that than the entirely unnecessary and repetitive flashback scenes before the car switch- that was obvious from Nate's first request, and then confirmed when they pulled the front plate off Hurley's car before the meet.

The byplay between Shelley and Bonnano was great throughout- yes, Sophie, Nate does have friends, he's just in denial about it.
I like the shoutouts to his silly "Eliot, we are not friends" crack, though. He's so clueless, still clinging to that black and white line of his.
Bonnano's comments didn't jibe well with Nate's little freakout at the beginning, though- clearly this isn't the first time, so why was Nate acting like having him over for poker was the most impossible thing ever? (And why was the bar closed on a Friday night?)

I must say, I love how Eliot is quietly pulling everyone's strings these days, and how they somehow all rely on him to do it!

@ Anon, etc- I'm sure Hardison doesn't have a tell, Eliot's just messing with his head, because that works as well as a tell, right?

Anonymous said...

@ Judy "Why would the Boston Mexicans send hitters to kill their own courier? I remember either Hardison or Eliot saying there were two teams of hitters after Hurley"
They didn't and there were;

The cartel was trying to take over "Sister Lupe's" route and hid their drugs in *her* courier-Hurley's -car. They planned to kill him to cover their tracks, after retrieving *their* drugs. (Doesn't make much sense, kinda like killing the goose that laid the eggs, imo, and I don't know why the guys in the hotel had an invite to the Venezuelen embassy, maybe they were a third team, from the S. Am factories?)

The Irish mob wanted to shut the Mexican cartels out by taking their drugs and killing their courier.

Oh, and they put Hurley's front plate on the car with drugs that the Mexicans took from Hardison, then Hurley went down to the meet with the Irish, and ran off in the car with the same plate on the back, so that the mob waiting at the exit would catch the cartel, thinking it was the same car.

The timing doesn't work too well, imo, unless it's a really big garage, but that's why Hurley stopped and hid, while Eliot was blocking the cartel's view with the big SUV

@David Hunt: [Anon to whom you replied] Oh, of course. Because of my involvement in fandoms that are very gender/orientation-skewed, it is easy to forget that there are fans who are not primarily interested in men.

@ Anon from 2:10 PM: I'm confused by what you are saying; you say that you don't think Hardison has a tell, which means Eliot can't actually control who wins their rock-paper-scissors games, but you also say that he let Hardison win the right to get chased by dogs. Does he control the game or not?

Riley7 said...

First off the whole 'Eliot loses rock, paper, scissors to Hardison' thing was gold. At first I thought that he actually lost but then he started smiling and I breathed a sigh of relief. I also love how Hardison tried to take charge and Eliot was secretly helping him out, it was very bromancy. I also think it is funny how Tara and Eliot, who I think are the most alike both got some. But I think everyone knew that Eliot was gonna get Sister Lupe. By the way, the whole "She's not a Nun" bit was awesome.

Riley7 said...

I forgot. I loved Eliot's friend, PLLLEEEAAASE bring him back he is awesome, if not in this season, season 5 please. Peggy and Hurley- well done. Nate saying thank you to Hardison was very unjackassy and it was nice to see. It is really cool by the way that Bonanno (I don't know if i spelled that right) is on their side now how he kind of turns a blind eye to their heists like " Don't tell me what it is, just do what you need to do". Great episode.

HOLY CRAP - You answered my question on the podcast. It's like a pre-Christmas Christmas present!

QUESTION: There has been a LOT of romantic development this season. [ ]we'll see the same kind of emphasis on couples and couple development next season? Or is this just where the arcs are at the moment, and there won't necessarily be the same focus on couples next season?

You said that the number of relationship beats is the same this season as it was previous seasons. But as you also said, the beats this season are bigger.

I think that's the key. Even though the number may be the same, the impression they leave on the viewer is decidedly different.

It does feel like a lot more this season, and to the extent that there's debate about whether it's too much or not enough, I think it's because there have been bigger beats. I guess whether that's a good thing or not is viewer's choice.

Anyway, though, very cool to get my question answered. Thanks again! You made my day you big drunk showrunner, you!

Hopefully I'll be able to catch the Christmas show. Still mad at TNT though for broadcasting the show on a day when I'll almost certainly be stuck watching some Xmas DVD with the family, though . . .

First scene Hurley's car hit Mattingly?? :D

Pay closer attention, few conversations before Parker & Sophie left are actually different from Girls Night Out :)

Then why would the guy Eliot hit has the same Venezuelan invitation?

Anonymous said...

My take on the guys with the Venezuelan invitation was that they were the thugs that Sophie and Tara had just dispatched. They went running out of the hotel room only to have the bad luck of running smack into Eliot.

Mad props for Nate stealing an AA mtg. Even my mother laughed.

Haha, wondrous episode. I salute you, Mr. Rogers. I love Hurley...I was sad not to see Sophie or Parker a lot, but I got lots of them last week.
Questions:
1. How did you pull off the roll in front of the car? It was pretty badass awesome.
2. Did Eliot lose the rock-paper-scissors game on purpose?
3. Was that Parker's voice on the phone? Where she just said "Thanks," it didn't really sound like Beth.
4a. How do Eliot and Shelley know each other? b. How did Eliot convince Shelley to come to a poker game with a state cop? I'm sure you mentioned these, but I probably missed them.
Very nice episode! I like the simultaneous setup. Very cool! See you next week!

Loved Shelley and certainly wouldn't mind seeing him again.

However, given your earlier ominous comments "a shocking death...", "traumatic season finale" and "Eliot's arc is always a little ahead of everyone else's", I do feel I should clarify:

I want Shelley ALONGSIDE Eliot. Not replacing him. Please.

By the way, is "Shelley" an alias? If so, I suspect he named himself after Eliot. (Eliot's name is real, as we've seen in 302.)

Kris said...

Add me to the list requesting more Shelley (or other Eliot army buddies) in future eps. They're a nice touch and it works for me in terms of character development because I don't know if I can see Eliot as he was at the start of the show feeling so comfortable hanging out with old friends from when he was a 'good guy' with stuff like Moreau hanging over him.

(I mean, I'm sure he did some awful stuff as part of the military, but there's doing it as a job and then there's doing it as a *job*, you know? He was in a really dark place at some point in his life to have ended up working for people like Moreau.)

Speaking of - can we expect any more in the future about Eliot's back story? (Yes, no points for guessing my favorite character on the show.)

Stephanie said...

Perhaps someone who can quote all 12 points of the Boy Scout Law -- in order, as my thoroughly tickled Eagle Scout husband pointed out -- is not really suited for the job of "goon." (And yet, our entire team is made up of criminals with consciences.)

Superb episode, the Hardison and Eliot bits were my favourites. Thank you!

I think there is even more going on with the boy scout scene, and wanted to add my two cents. It is reminiscent of the dialogues in tom stoppard's "rosenkrantz and guildenstern are dead" between the two title characters. It has that feeling of a play within a play, as they offer detached commentary on their roles as hitmen facing a moral dilemma -- whether the sacred space of a church extends to the basement, and therefore makes it wrong to commit a murder there, rather than outside.

@Katie, I also noticed that! is Parker now the keeper of Sophie's collection of Nate insults? She had a pretty hilarious look on her face while she was writing in it, so if it is the same book, looks like she's on Sophie's side. :)

Doing a season rewatch on XFinity OnDemand, and I just have to say that I love this episode.

I particularly like the way Eliot handled the officer at the impound lot. It says a lot about the level of Eliot's game that he knew the right way to approach her. If he'd come in there all suave and confident, I think she'd have been on her guard, thinking he was trying to charm her... but in approaching it power negative, acting like he was nervous to talk to her, and that he was all shy... well, that just got right past her defenses. Eliot really does got game. I never would have thought to do that... or write that.

And really, only Eliot and Sophie really have game among the Leverage crew. They are all good looking, competent people, but really only these two know how to work it. Eliot just has a natural talent with it, and Sophie has a natural talent that she's actually cultivated into a vocation.

Dear John,

Since I didn't see a post about "Girls' Night Out" I decided to comment on this one, that actually it's the complement to the story. First thing I'm from Venezuela now the invitation says "Tango" "Celebrating the culture of Venezuela" well Tango is from Argentina no Venezuela, "Joropo" even "Salsa" describes better the culture of Venezuela why Tango? I always think writers don't do things random and I guess there is a reason, I'd love to know it. Now you got Arepas right and the flag had the correct number of stars. I liked the episode was nice to see Parker, Tara and Sophie helping the opposition in fictional way thanks for that.

On "Boys' Night Out" I enjoyed the umbrella trick in fact one day I was holding an umbrella and I was thinking what Eliot could do with it, well got my answer thank you!
