PLANES, TRAINS AND AUTOMOBILES

Why? I could list all the jokes, but it's really this:

"I like me. My wife likes me."

Toss-up between The Breakfast Club and Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

The Breakfast Club had characters that I identified with more, but one aspect of the ending -- Ally Sheedy's makover -- just fell flat for me.

Whereas Ferris Bueller had characters that I wanted to be but couldn't actually identify with, but had an aspect of the ending (Cameron's determination to stand up to his father in the face of very real fear) that just absolutely sang to me.

I just realized that I've never actually seen Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. I'll need to correct that.

Some Kind of Wonderful, because even thought I always felt like Sam Baker, I always wanted to grow up to be Watts.

"Some Kind of Wonderful." It had the ending I wanted from "Pretty in Pink," terrific performances from Mary Stuart Masterson and Eric Stoltz, and Duncan. 'Nuf said.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Because despite it being the same age as me I can still relate. And Ferris would still be cool even today.

Tie between Ferris Bueller and Weird Science. I loved 'em all, but I want to watch those two right now...

(Cunningham, I got your back!)

Sixteen Candles

It had the best comedy dialogues.

Grandma Helen: Oh Sam, let me take a look at you. Fred, she's gotten her boobies.
Grandpa Fred: I better get my magnifying glass. Ha Ha Ha.
Grandma Helen: Oh, and they are so PERKY.

Samantha: I can't believe my grandmother actually felt me up.

In essence of my Own Grandmother!

"Some King of Wonderful" because it has the ending "Pretty in Pink" ought to have had.

(Duckie wuz robbed).

Also, if you'd asked me a few years ago, I'd have said "Ferris", but "Ferris" is more of a fantasy, and SKOW is that smidge closer to the world I live in. And I prolly ought to have said "Breakfast Club" but I've always been more of an optimist and romantic than I ever was an anarchistic rebel outcast.

(Also? One of the best kisses on film. Ever. 'Nuff said)

Max Marie, SFO said...

In the original ending of Pretty in Pink, Duckie got the girl. Test audiences didn't like it so they re-shot it. Poor Andy got stuck in an awful wig.

I adore Some Kind of Wonderful. I was THAT girl. A little too butch. A little too brainy. But a little too pretty to ignore. And crazy in love with a guy in autoshop. My first kiss! He recently found me on Facebook.

Ah... memories.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off! The man's movies defined my childhood. Now THAT'S a career.

Some Kind Of Wonderful. Hands Down. I was always more like Watts growing up anyway.

Oh, and the kissing scene is probably one of the best. Ever.

The Breakfast Club and Ferris Bueller in a close tie.

The Breakfast Club.

I saw it first when I was about 9 yrs old,. When Molly Ringwald tells Ally Sheedy that she'd look much better without that black sh*t around her eyes, I knew, when I grew up, I wanted to be the girl with the black sh*t round her eyes.

How can you pick a favorite movie and not share the best lines?
Hughes Films were my high school story.....

"No more yankie my wankie. The Donger need food" - 16 Candles

"Brian Johnson: Saturday, March 24,1984. Shermer High School, Shermer, Illinois, 60062. Dear Mr. Vernon, We accept the fact that we had to sacrifice a whole Saturday in detention for whatever it was we did wrong. What we did *was* wrong. But we think you're crazy to make us write an essay telling you who we think we are. What do you care? You see us as you want to see us - in the simplest terms, in the most convenient definitions. You see us as a brain, an athlete, a basket case, a princess and a criminal. Correct? That's the way we saw each other at 7:00 this morning. We were brainwashed." Breakfast Club

"Grace: Oh, he's very popular Ed. The sportos, the motorheads, geeks, sluts, bloods, waistoids, dweebies, dickheads - they all adore him. They think he's a righteous dude." Ferris Bueller's Day Off

"Miles: Are you my Dad's brother?
Buck: What's your record for consecutive questions asked?
Miles: 38.
Buck: I'm your Dad's brother alright.
Miles: You have much more hair in your nose than my Dad.
Buck: How nice of you to notice.
Miles: I'm a kid - that's my job. " Uncle Buck

Ferris was great but I loved SIXTEEN CANDLES. Every moment was histerical. But the subtle things make me giggle the most. Joan Cusack in a back brace trying to get a drink at a drinking fountain, etc. All were fabulous! Its a real sad day!

Martin Johnstone said...

Suppose it would have to be Ferris Buller if only because i liked the comments to the camera when i was 10.

But looking at John Hughes's imbd page everything after Uncle Buck is a wasteland.

Devinoch said...

Ferris Bueller's Day off. "Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it."

I do, however, think "Career Opportunities," which was written by him, was woefully unappreciated, as I dearly love that film.

Dremiel said...

Some Kind of Wonderful!

It's amazing that his films, so rooted in their own time, have held up well. Specific AND universal!

J-Rog, you should mention the guy's passing in the OP. It wasn't until Dave S's comment that I learned he died. (I was going to make a crack about American Pimp being my fav Hughes movie.)

My fave JH would have been FBDO, but I also learned in the comments that he did Planes, Trains, and Automobiles which was very good. That is my favorite.

Emily Blake said...

Ferris just barely inches out The Breakfast Club, but mainly for the genius in disguising a movie about Cameron as a movie about Ferris.

I also have a great deal of love for that scene in Uncle Buck where he scares the pants of that boy with the drill.

I've never seen PiP or Sixteen Candles so I'm only basing this on the ones I *have* seen so: Some Kind of Wonderful. I fell in love with both women and have followed their careers for 20+ years....

16 Candles.

It had everything.

Some Kind of Wonderful. I re-wound and rewatched that kiss (you know the one) so many times I wore out the tape on the VHS. Every time I hear "She Loves Me" my mind goes right back to that scene.

Best kiss EVER.

Having trouble choosing just one... but while thinking it over I think Pretty In Pink has shaped my life in ways I don't acknowledge--my obsessive love of Duckie, love of Annie Potts' character... but it also disappoints in so many ways (the complete ending, Annie Potts' character turning square and going out with the pet shop guy...)

Breakfast Club or Weird Science for me.

Some Kind Of Wonderful is also my favorite, though The Breakfast Club remains very nearly a religious experience.

Gonna go with a classic and say The Breakfast Club. That movie poster has been on my wall for 10 years now.. wow.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off... because I was the kid in high school that never (and I mean NEVER) skipped. But, I desperately wanted to be the kid that Ferris was. Plus, I absolutely LOVED Cameron. He just was adorable and one of my top 10 all time favorite movie characters. :)

Keith said...

Weird Science. It's juvenile, dated and completely weird but damn if it isn't a fun movie. I'll even watch it on TV, all bleeped out and cut to hell.

Mooney said...

Nope. Can't do it. Can't pick a favorite.

I could drop one here or there down a notch, but picking an actual favorite? Gonna have to wuss out on that one. Too many pivotal films of my adolescence.

As a whole, I'd have to go with Breakfast Club. But I think my hands-down favourite moment/scene is Uncle Buck with the drill.

RIP JH

Some kind of wonderful, wasn't that the one where the impopular kid beats up the popular bully with a baseball bat at the end thus getting the girl while the school applauds? Perhaps I was just too old (18).

Michael said...

While I do have a few fond memories of Uncle Buck I'll have to go with the Breakfast Club.

Not least (and because nobody else has mentioned it yet) for iconifying "Don't You" by the Simple Minds. Song still gives me goosebumps and has caused various great cover-versions (best one, IMO, by Life of Agony).

When Cameron was in egypt-land...
Let my Cameron go...

Let's get some small screen time time for some of those people. Alan Ruck would make a great bad guy. So would Mia Sara in my opinion.

Otto Man said...

All good choices, but don't forget that the man also wrote the "Vacation" movies.

"I don't know why they call this stuff hamburger helper. It does just fine by itself, huh?"

Otto Man said...

Also, the dad in Sixteen Candles gives lines I'll be quoting to my own daughter one day.

"That's why they call them crushes. If they were easy, they'd call them something else."

Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Cameron is my hero.

Timmy Mac said...

Pretty in Pink. Can't defend the choice logically, but that movie resonated with high school Timmy more than any movie before or since.

Kim said...

Sixteen Candles.

Loved it back in the day, still watch it every time I scan past it on TV.

Some Kind of Wonderful is probably my second fave!

B.Mooney said...

The Breakfast Club. It resonated pretty strongly with me for years.

Chris said...

Ferris Bueller just tops Breakfast Club.

I only saw Breakfast Club on TV but at a time when I needed to re-think the whole high school thing, which was a good thing. But Ferris is the utter high school myth and oh I wanted to be him. Parker Lewis came close but that was played too much like a romp to be believable. Ferris could have done all that weird stuff, y'know?

Alison said...

Breakfast Club but only because my friend and I once reinacted the whole thing with cookies, a scrabble board and poorly drawn with crayon backdrops.

NG said...

Obviously Ferris Bueller's Day Off. It's the Citizen Kane of the 80s.

David Lee said...

Some Kind of Wonderful. It's the only one I currently own. An old VHS. I'm going to have to upgrade that to DVD one of these days.

Mary Sue said...

The Breakfast Club I taped it off Comedy Central when I was like, 14, and then I wore the videotape out watching it.

To prove how innocent and sheltered I was, I didn't realise the stuff in the locker that they were smoking was pot until my sophmore year of college.

She's Having A Baby.

I never tire of watching that movie. I will turn right around and watch it again.

David T G Riches said...

Uncle Buck is my favourite.
If you watch it carefully it's all the components of Uncle Buck being a homicidal maniac or at the least some type of serial killer.
How else do you explain giant pancakes with a fresh shovel?
How else do you explain invading a rowdy teenage party, drilling the lock, and smuggling a teenager out without anyone noticing he's being put into the trunk of a car?
Everyone knows he's a maniac they are just too scared to say anything because he hasn't gotten caught. Oh that John Hugh's was so sly to slip that in without anyone noticing.

he has made so many wonderful movies over the years its hard to pick just one as a favorite. but "some kind of wonderful" "the breakfast club", "pretty in pink" and "sixteen candles" are probably at the top of my list

Ken said...

Extremely difficult choice. I'd have to go with Pretty in Pink, but Breakfast Club and Ferris are a very close tie for second.

I agree with the guy who said Career Opportunities is underrated. I love that movie, I think if the store robbery plot were removed you'd have an amazing indie dramady. Weirdly out of all Hughes films I've probably seem it the most often. Since I first saw it in theatres in 91 I've probably watched it 50 times.

I'm also a huge fan of The Great Outdoors, Planes, Trains and Automobiles and She's Having a Baby.

Callie said...

This is so difficult.

LOVED Ferris because of Cam. That look Alan Ruck gives when Mia Sara realized he wasn't catatonic in the pool. Superb.

The Breakfast Club - Judd Nelson's Bender was just about every guy I ever had a crush on in high school.

Some Kind of Wonderful - I wanted to be Watts. The coolest female character in any JH film, hands down.

RIP, Mr. Hughs. You will be missed.
