There seems to be some cultural panic initiated by the recent Rev. Wright controversy. One e-mail sent to us recently asked :"I don't understand! We let between two to three hundred black people become incredibly rich in professional sports and pop music! Why are some of them still so angry?!"
We sympathize with your confusion, but wish to clarify --
If Senator Obama becomes President, we will still run everything.
Everything.

Just for the record, those 200-300 black people aren't even incredibly rich by modern standards. The number of african-american billionaires is 2, relative to a few hundred white americans. Your standard issue rich athlete doesn't have more than a few tens of millions, which doesn't begin to approach standard issue rich white people. Very rich, yes, but incredibly rich, no.

We could do with some useful confusion around here.
A different perspective.
Millions of Catholics (like myself) did not leave a Church whose priests were guilty of far worse crimes than some angry words. Whose leaders, too, merely moved those sick priests around - unnecessarily putting many more children at risk - rather than, at the very least, removing them from service and/or getting them some help.
Faith is very personal and selective. No one gets to judge or decide for anyone else.
Reminder: we all live in glass houses. Throwing stones at others' only ensures that ours will come crashing down.

But... that bit in the Obama speech where he spoke of working and middle class whites who "don't feel that they have been particularly privileged by their race..."
I don't know... telling them they REALLY run everything, despite their bills and mortgages and the standard troubles everybody faces... well, that might not be the most effective way to make that point.

Acknowledging that we live in a closed system and have no choice but to work together, is where we begin.

Wait a minute didn't Obama throw his grandmother under the bus in that speech? CNN tells me this is so. I read and listened to the speech and didn't hear it but CNN says it, it must be true. Plus, the speech was long, just over a half hour, the sound bites are much easier to digest. Cutting the speech down to 15 second bites couldn't distort the message of the speech could it?
Whoa, hold on! Are you saying that, should Obama be elected, all the white people won't be put on ships and deported to Africa?

I think one massive incursion of whites into Africa is plenty for a while. Let the Mother rest a bit before having another go. She's obviously tired and under a lot of residual stress from the last time.

Your point that middle class whites don't want to hear that they're privileged is well taken. And, based on my experiences teaching middle and upper class white kids, very true.
But, that doesn't make white privilege any less real. And doesn't mean that we shouldn't talk about the fact that race matters. Sure, it's not a popular thing to do--and it's not likely to win any votes, but I'd still say it's important. Who knows, this dialog might even continue outside of the election season.
