Innocent Abroad

Kevin Drum was nice enough to host a series of articles by a young man who just visited Kurdistan. The series wraps up today, great stuff.

John,

I'm interested to know your opinion on Crash winning Best Picture. I will admit that Crash was a bit heavy-handed and manipulative, but I felt it was powerful, disturbing, and thought-provoking. And it covered the issue of prejudice with an honesty which is very uncommon, basically that all of the characters had a problem in being able to see the person who was in front of them. Instead, they saw a race or ethnicity, and they interpreted everything through that lens.

I was listening to Larry Mantle on KPCC 89.3, and he and other movie critics considered it to be a very weak Oscar nominee. I think that one of the words that Mantle used to describe Crash is "hackneyed".

I haven't seen Brokeback nor Capote, so I can't say whether they were robbed. Somehow, I doubt they would provoke the same emotional reaction which I had when I saw Crash, and isn't that what makes a great movie?

Maybe I am confusing entertainment with art...
