THE LIBRARIAN #103 "And the Horns of a Dilemma" Question Post

Hey all. I think now that the show is up and running, I'm going to use the old form, where I wait to see the questions and then do the behind-the-scenes write up depending on what you seem most interested in.

So, post your questions, confusion, joy and snark in the Comments below.  I'll be posting the answers to last week's questions tomorrow.  If you're new here, check the last post for the posting rules.

John, we saw Christian's character open up to Cassie' character about his family..Two questions: 1 Will we actually see Jake's family if there is more than 1 season (not just a mention of then as it was in Leverage)?? 2. Since he isn't an Eliot Spencer character when it comes to women...could/would you have him have a love interest if the series continues? Possibly cassandra??

I just want to thank you for bringing a brainy redhead named Cassandra to the screen. Someone to whom I can relate. ;)

I'm feeling some heat between Jake and Cassandra - is this something to which I can look forward? Because I know y'all didn't deal in romance too much on Leverage, but I can't help but 'ship it. I think there's an interesting dynamic there, and I hope we get to see it explored as a complement to the main story. Complex characters and their relationships are always the thing that truly hooks me on a story.

I am loving the show so much, and I am just so grateful as a fan of the movies for the last decade that this finally got done. Y'all are killing it. :)

could we consider stone to be eliot's little brother? which is a bit funny considering ck is older now, he seems to be playing younger.

  5. And that answers my question from the previous post. (Which was "Did Christian Kane freak John and Dean out doing his own stunts again?") I think John should include a Christian Kane Injury Count with each post-game. Both for the episode and cumulative.

Interesting choice for the type of corporation. Makes me wonder what Monsanto has in its basement. Tap out an M in Morse code with your beer bottle if I'm in the ballpark.

  7. I love where this is going. Identity issues everywhere.

But seriously, the storyline you're leading into with Jake, I can see the potential there, and it promises to be incredible. Really looking forward to more of that to come.

Cassandra has a very honest fear about her. Understandably so. She's dealing with it as best she can, but that's the kind of thing that wears a person down, and from what we've seen so far, she's been doing it without support. And as bad as Jake's trust issues are, I think we're going to see a lot of problems from her taking the fallout of said issues. Flynn may have saved her, but it was Jake who brought her out of that hallucination, who taught her something that might help her control it. Ezekiel stepped up to the plate in this episode, but I think Cassie's going to be chasing the trust that, right now, Jake isn't capable of giving her.

Okay. Now that I'm done with my fortune teller act, on to an actual question. This episode felt very, very fast. So did the premier, but that got slowed down a little by Flynn's tendency to spout and well, awkwardness.
Is this going to be an ongoing thing? It felt like we could only be half/two thirds done, but then I looked at the clock and there was less than a minute left. Is it always going to feel like this? Lead/Rush/Rush/Rush/Win/Character Tag?
On a related note, how is The Librarians working around the commercials? You talked a lot about 5/6 act structure re:Leverage. I didn't get too strong a sense of act breaks here. Letting the chips fall where they may?

Can you tell us what's going to happen to the Minotaur? I doubt it's a good thing to have one running loose in Boston. Or is that going to be dealt with in a later episode?

Okay, I am just in awe of the tight and efficient writing and the skill involved in scene with Cassandra presenting the concept of the seven floors of the labyrinth. I have almost no depth perception, and have a lot of trouble visualizing things in three dimensions, but I got the whole thing on the first viewing. Damn, y'all are good.

I love that The Librarians and Leverage are similar just by virtue of so many people having worked on both shows but that each show still stands separate.
I was wondering, is the Jake/Cass/Ezekiel relationship(s) mirror that of Eliot/Hardison/Parker? They were the thing I loved most about Leverage (besides the takedowns) and I'm already starting to love the Librarians in Training. Thanks for writing for this great show!

  14. Add another Cassandra/Stone shipper to the count. And I appreciate both that Cassandra is standing up for herself and that Jake isn't making her jump through bullshit hoops to "prove herself." He's not ready to forgive and/or trust her and I feel like they both understand that it's on him. I dig that.

Good work on Cassandra's graphics. The shapes and the math and floaty-glowy writing all looked lovely. And it helped get across the idea that the maze was a confusing mess but still ordered.

    Questions!

    1) What was Stone reading in that last scene?

    2) Who played the minotaur? He was great.

    3) How old is Jenkins? How long has he held his position? Does the Library send out cards for researchers?

    4) Why didn't Charlene ever use this "back door" to save on plane tickets? It seemed to work pretty well, all things considered, and no one has to worry about loosing luggage. Hopefully.

    5) Are the new recruits apartment hunting in Oregon or are they camping out at the Annex?

Thanks again, this episode was awesome and Tricia Helfer killed it. Great job all around!

  15. "If we find the bridge"? You are aware that the Portland Pirate Festival is held beneath that bridge, and, well, pirates?

    Kes definitely agree with you

Thomas Ahearn I would expect it to disappear as it is tied to the Labyrinth.

So the whole family is watching the show.

    Loved Baird's spin on technobabble.

Baird not a fan of Rocky Mountain oysters?

My son quipped the minotaur was still pissed because he was missing his nose ring. Ole?

    Pointing a gun=commercial break/End of act

Angry Eliot err, Jake- Comedy Gold.
hmmm, Immortals, Spear of Destiny ... no Longinus?
Great show, looking forward to next week

That last scene with Jake and Cassie about killed me, though I'm seeing their dynamic as more of siblings than shippy. I second the question above about whether we'll see Jake interact with his family and friends at home (perhaps a library mission takes the gang to Oklahoma?). I'm really looking forward to seeing how Jake's character develops, in any case. In that last scene he seems so tired, like holding himself apart from everyone in his life for so long has drained him.

  19. Couple of quick questions.

    1. Was the Golden Axe a reference to the classic video game?

    2. Can you talk to someone about the sound mixing? I had conversations getting drowned out by people's clothes shuffling.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Is there a story behind how you came up with any of the main characters' names?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Trilby12:47 AM

Heh. Missed this the first time around but I love that Ezekiel called Helfer's character the "Big Bad"!!

And regarding Jake and Cassandra's relationship... Maybe the term you're looking for is "partners"? :-)

    ReplyDelete
  22. Really loved this episode. How is it you get any work done when you have Christian and John L playing comedy off each other? I would be laughing to hard. You must be very thrilled Mr Rodgers since you were constantly complaining on the Leverage commentaries that Kane should do more comedy.

  26. Stacey9:23 AM

    Why Boston?

Stone continues to try getting the glowy globe to work. Nice continuity.

The ball of thread is kinda twine-y. And the first Minotaur appearance is kinda Ferdinand-on-Steroids. Was expecting more CGI there. But perhaps the budget for this episode was used up on vintage telephones?

Can't help wondering how many parents are now trying to explain pocket-size maze games with tiny ball bearings to the kids raised on computer games.

Snark aside, I very much enjoyed this episode, and I especially like that Cassandra is less fragile and more feisty.

    Can't wait for Santa Claus!

So, character background question: in the premiere, we learn that Jake has been researching and publishing in art history under a pseudonym. How does he have the time and resources for that? does his pseudonym have some kind of university affiliation so that he has access to an academic library? And does he, like Eliot, only sleep 90 minutes a day?

Also, I wanted to say, I discovered leverage at the beginning of this year and your blog after that, and I'm excited you've revived it and i get to participate in Librarians post games! Thanks for taking the time and energy to engage with your fans; it is much appreciated!

  28. Good to see you back! The new show is fun, and the Leverage shout-outs are a laugh (why else would they go to Boston first?) But it all makes me miss Leverage at the same time.

Nice to see a lot of the old Leverage team are at work on this show as well. I'm no fan of Noah Wyle, but the appeal of Devlin/Rogers and Co. let me overcome that long enough to give the show a try. I'll be watching.

The scene with Jake hitting the Minotaur with an old beat up truck seriously reminded me of the scene from Angel Season 2 when Christian's character hits Angel with his old beat up truck. Was that an intentional call back or just coincidence?

    Yay, the blog is back!

Bad news/good news: I'm not really buying RR's punches so far, but I'm really enjoying the way she lands her punchlines ("That's what I said!").

I was thinking that Cassandra had a Parker vibe, in that they both have a child-like quality. It comes down to them being in the moment rather than being self-conscious. When Cassandra's senses overwhelm her, she has no choice but to be in the moment, and it feels like she's kind of resigned herself to it. Not a defiant "I'm not going to justify myself to you" but more of a "explaining would get tiresome and I'm just not going to bother with it, so this is me" attitude.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I like the idea of the three librarians as siblings more than the possibility of any romantic shipping among them, personally.

I do like RR learning to trust them and at the same time fostering their talents. "Librarians win with what they know. What do YOU know?" Great bit.

I'd love to see the Minotaur show back up again -- "You shot me in the crotch. Sure, it grew back, but that HURT. If you hadn't let me out, we'd have serious..." "Beef?" "Okay, I'll give you that one, that actually made me smile. Point being -- we're even. Don't expect a hug."

Thank you for making my Sundays bright once again. I really like all the subtle beats that a Leverage fan might catch. That said, friends and coworkers who I've convinced to watch the show just love the dynamics. The show is just FUN. The past two Mondays, I've watched the extended iTunes versions during lunch. Cheers me up for the afternoon of more middle school students.

I do hope we get to see how they contain the artifacts they find since they don't have the Library.

Will we see Matt Frewer's character again?

    Mark Shepard. 'nut said.

While I liked Kane's hair long, the difference really helps differentiate between Eliot and Stone.

The comic beats. John Kim is a hoot and Cassandra makes me cry for her pain. There are very few shows that have some diverse depths. Hoping for season 2.

    Cheers

  36. @ Thomas - The Labrys is a type of axe associated with the Minoans. The exact association is unclear, like everything else Minoan, but it seems likely that it was the symbol of the goddess who was the patron of the palace, known as the Labyrinth. Because it was a large complex building in the 2nd millenium BC, people found it confusing and got lost in it. Hence to visitors it became the prototypical maze.

(As far as I know, the ball of twine as metaphor for a maze is new)

My question is: I didn't spot an "amazing" pun. How did you resist?

    ReplyDelete
  37. Love this episode too. Our characters always go out as themselves. That is ok as we are becoming familiar with them (as well as the rest of the magic world) Are we going to see them costume up to infiltrate a gathering. They could all wear disguises. Would also love to see Jake in a tux and Eve in a nice red dress. Ezekiel and Casandra could go goth or even cosplay. Enjoy the Christmas season and thanks for all you do.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Thought of another question, sorry to double post, you'd mentioned in Leverage commentaries that certain writers tended to dig in on certain characters. Has that already developed in The Librarians writers' room? Obviously, as you said, Jake Stone's Turner rant was you, likewise Cassandra's math. What about personalities? Are the writers matching up to characters by complimentary skills? by complimentary personalities? by brand of sarcasm? by something else I haven't thought of?

And how are you actually referring to the characters? I keep finding myself switching between Jake and Stone, between Cassie and Cassandra; there's a certain tendency for the other characters to just call Ezekiel Jones 'thief'. It feels like the military influence has everyone calling Eve 'Baird'. I've found myself avoiding calling them Stone and Jones, using at least one of the first names to avoid the rhyme. How has that settled in for the writers?

I'm a huge fan of Elio--I mean Jake Stone and I'd love to see the relationship between him & Cassandra develop, but I'm also really interested in seeing Ezekiel open up. Right now he's snarky and peppy and all, which is fun, but...will we see more from him? Just curiosity.

LOVING this show. Please keep it up.

The randomly arranged volumes of the easily recognizable Supreme Court Reports interspersed with other colored books was very distracting to quite a few of the viewers I conversed with.
Maybe this is a sign that the plots are not riveting enough to skimp on the props?

    1) Amazon just informed me that I have extended cuts of the episodes waiting for me at home as part of the Season Pass I already purchased through them. Oh my holy squeeing delight, this is wonderful! I know you and Downey like to experiment with content delivery, so when and where would you like me to send my feedback about how much I appreciate this?

    2) Is Jenkins Nicolas Flamel? What with Jenkins dropping lines about Alchemy and Nicolas Flamel always showing up where you need him in the same episode, and being a grouchy reclusive arcane-focused scientist type in general, I am willing to wager money that he is. The idea truly delights me.

I admit, when the Minotaur first took on a human form, I thought he was being played by Richard "Bull Shannon" Moll, who ch would have been genius. Tyler Mane was great, but if get more minotaurs in future episodes, consider this a vote for Richard!

It seems like there's a million "evil factions" misusing Magic out there. Are there "good" factions others than the Librarians? Will we get to meet them?
