Crunk & Classical

Still on the road, doing ... producer-y stuff. Will resume actually typing soon, but in the meantime ...

  3. Apocalyptica's cover of "For Whom the Bell Tolls" or "Nothing Else Matters."

Old school, maybe, but you can't beat heavy metal cellos.

The Maria Schneider Orchestra's "Sky Blue". It sounds like the love child of Gil Evans and Aaron Copeland.
Second place is Jerry Goldsmith's "Planet of the Apes" score which for my money has to be the most experimental film score ever created for a major studio film.

  5. The song cycle "Ayre" by composer Osvaldo Golijov. My favorite song in the cycle is "Tancas Serradas a Muru," arranged for voice. Dawn Upshaw gives it a witchy and raucus sound in the recording for Deutsche Grammophon. It sounds like a circus is parading into town, and it intends to burn the big top down when the show's over. The Silk Road Ensemble recorded a version of the song which replaced the voice with a Turkish instrument related to the bagpipe.

  6. Apocalyptica's version of 'In The Hall of the Mountain King' is pretty rockin'... as is the Deus Irae in Mozart's Requiem.

(The youtube video-- the music set against Monet paintings-- amuses the hell out of me, because I find it a rather unsettling piece at the same time as I think it's gorgeous.)

    It makes me happy.

  9. I mostly listen to classical music at home, while I'm writing. The only classical I have on my mp3 player is one of my absolute favourites: Beethoven's 5th Piano Concerto, AKA the 'Emperor'. It's my go-to for the hour-long commute home, when I'm stressed or exhausted.

  10. Does "Classical Gas" by Mason Williams count?

  11. Wow, I can't pick just one...
Arvo Part - "I am the true vine" One of the most stunningly beautiful choral pieces in the last couple of centuries.

For the true "Classical" The Guarneri String Quartet's performance of Beethoven's String Quartet No 15. There is something about the Guarneri's era of performance style that is missing from today's performances.

Lastly in the "clasical-ish categroy is Anouar Brahem's "Leila Au Pays Du Carrousel". Imagine of Erik Satie played the oud, was from Tunisia, and was influenced by tango. Can't? check here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ff_qwu57hok

  12. I'm a pop music kinda girl, but I love "Dance of the Sugarplum Fairy". It's just so...cute. A little twee, but I turn it on and feel all right.

  13. I'm an Opera Singer, so that means my Ipod is MOSTLY classical. My favorite: Mozart's Don Giovanni, conducted by Erich Leinsdorf, with Birgit Nilsson, Cesare Siepi and Leontyne Price.

  14. Current favorite actual Classical piece? I'm gonna go with "The Swan" by Saint-Saƫns, because it's just so beautiful and calm that it helps me calm down a bit. But, I also enjoy Mars: Bringer of War by Holst for being so apt to its theme.

On the front of orchestral, but not actually classical, I've been playing "I Am the Doctor" by Murray Gold a bunch lately... it's that piece that is pretty much the 11th Doctor's theme.

Also, I just got a copy of the late Shirley Walker's Batman the Animated Series scores, and she has this whole 14 minute overture of the most memorable themes and leitmotifs used in that series. Really dig that.

  15. And now I actually watch the posted video and it is The Swan he is playing. And now I feel like an idiot.

  19. St. Paul's Suite by Gustav Holst, particularly the Jig and the Finale. There's just something magical about that piece.

I also harbor a secret love for "Apolkalypse Now," which was free on iTunes a while back. Maybe it's because they sound so cheerful singing about the end of the world, or maybe it's because they actually label the end of the world the "apolkalypse", but either way, you just can't listen to it without smiling.

  20. Also, this is somewhat random and has absolutely nothing to do with classical music, but over the past few weeks I've been slowly becoming obsessed with the Blue Beetle, particularly Jaime Reyes. It was quite pleasant a surprise to find out that you were one of his creators!

    ReplyDelete
  21. I have comparatively little real classical music on my various electronic devices; the difference between hearing it live in person and recorded is greater than most other music, for me anyway. So I've only bothered to pick up a smattering of random stuff. "The Lark Ascending" by Ralph Vaugh Williams is my go-to for something beautifully contemplative, but it takes time to slow down to listen to it.

In ... well, not exactly this vein at all, and it doesn't count except that this has been sitting on my playlist since I found it and you could argue that original soundtracks are modern counterparts of classical music and this may be of some interest to the few gamers on here that don't already know about it because I'm always the last to find out about everything ... I recently got turned onto Overclocked Remix. A whole bunch of computer game musical scores, remixed by different artists, just for the love of the medium. And ever since I heard it, I can't stop listening to "The Ballad of Sir Kibbles". Also "Frame of Mind". So ... yeah.

Rob Dougan's "Clubbed to Death" from the Matrix Soundtrack. It's got both classic "Classical" bits (strings, piano, and whatnot), but since it's from the Matrix, it's got some hip/hop and electronic/dance bits as well. It's seven and a half minutes of awesome.

    http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/evacuating-london/id162760376?i=162760395

There's also "Evacuating London" by Harry Gregson-Williams off of the first Chronicles of Narnia sountrack. That's just one of my favorite "pure symphony" songs. And yes, I realize that both of this songs are soundtracks. There's a reason my favorite part of my Music History class was the discussion on leitmotifs.

    http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/storming-new-caprica/id338004960?i=338005339

"Storming New Caprica", by Bear McCreary, off of the Season Three Battlestar Galactica soundtrack. Awesome use of percussion to sell the drama in this piece.

    http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/the-planets-op-32-i-mars-bringer/id56556187?i=56555054

"Mars, the Bringer of War", by Holst, as preformed by the LSO, part of his Planets Suite. And, even though it's a "Classic" piece of classic music, I really love it because it was the opening music for Escape Velocity: Nova, one of my favorite games of the early Naughts.

  27. At this point, I'm most familiar with soprano arias, because that's what I learn, but I don't actually listen to opera because the voices are too big for my ears.

Most beautiful aria I've learned: "Signore ascolta" from Puccini's Turandot

Current favorite: "Mon coeur s'ouvre a ta voix" from Saint-Saens' Samson and Delilah

  28. Bach's Toccata & Fugue in D Minor, conducted by Stokowski. I still fall into the same trance with that as I did as a kid watching Fantasia (http://youtu.be/a1z12_Ps-gk) on the big screen.

    Tchaikovsky's 5th Symphony, 2nd movement, horn solo - here with Bernstein & BSO (http://youtu.be/-TtQRWwW_Ww)

John Adams, Short Ride in a Fast Machine, here by the NWYSO) - or just about anything by Adams, but this is a favorite. Classical to drive fast to!

  35. Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata" is the one favorite that never changes. I have loved it since first I heard it many, many moons ago.

I also have a soft spot for Debussy's "Claire de lune" simply because it was the first real classical piece I heard (waaaay back in early elementary school), and it started my lifelong love of classical.

As for "classical-ish," I have Metallica's version of "The Ecstasy of Gold" from "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly." I may sometimes listen to that while watching the shootout scene in "Big Bang Job." ;)
