(Since I'm busy with the D&D comic and Leverage post-games, I thought I'd run some more Christmas-y reruns. This one's from March 2009.)
John: Favorite movie? Casablanca.
Berg: Searching for Bobby Fischer.
Chris: You know mine, It's a Wonderful Life. And the other --
John: Gotta say, once you realize George Bailey dies in the middle, it's a totally different movie.
Chris: ... what?
John: It's a Wonderful Life is really a movie -- and I'm not the first person to say this -- about how a man's dreams are crushed by family expectations and middle class responsibilities. George Bailey's dreams of going to college and off to Europe are destroyed by the allegedly idyllic small town values that in fact trap him. Suffocate him.
Chris: ...
John: So, say Bailey jumped off that bridge and died. Say Clarence was there to guide him to heaven. What would heaven be for such a man? It would be validation. And that's what Clarence the Angel gives him, a tour meant to show him how significant he is. Or how significant, at least, he always secretly believed himself to be.
Chris: Hmm.
John: And then when he repents of his suicide, what does he get? A timeless eternity in his living room surrounded by his loved ones, with everyone he knows in the world coming through the door to tell him how amazing he is. The second half of It's a Wonderful Life makes much more sense if you assume that George Bailey committed suicide, and the rest is Bailey's heaven.
Chris: Is that more or less depressing than the original meaning?
John: I honestly don't know.
In the Comments, tell us your favorite movie -- no judgment, no baseline.
Although, I have seen the movie many times (it being one of my favorites), I really was rocked by your take on George Bailey actually dieing and being in heaven. It is an interesting take on an old chestnut. Thanks...!
ReplyDeleteI met a fellow actor in our local community who was putting a production of a live play of "It's a Wonderful Life." and I explained your theory to him.
ReplyDeleteHe looked as if i'd hit him with a brick.
I really shouldn't take such glee in poisoning the mind of a fellow actor in that way. But i simply couldn't stop giggling.
The Princess Bride. How could you not like a story with fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, miracles...
ReplyDeleteHmmm, I don't often think about films in terms of favorites, but I just did that very thing, and I think I've got teo go with The Maltese Falcon. I LOVE Bogart's portrayal of Sam Spade.
ReplyDeleteIs that even an answerable question? Wow. I can't even...
ReplyDeleteAt a pinch, I'd go with Gladiator, largely because it's a very simple story which veers fairly cleanly between BDHism and pathos. One of the few times, in my experience, when the extended version doesn't really add anything worthwhile. Unlike, say, T2, which isn't worth watching in the theatrical release version.
And I'll give a nod to The Hurt Locker, too.
Since the moment I saw it, Casablanca. Still after all these years...
ReplyDeleteTo be perfectly honest, Serenity is currently my favorite film. I know it's hardly uncommon for a Sci-Fi geek, but I just love the hell out of it.
ReplyDeleteApollo 13 gets an honorable mention.
@Jen_Ann_W, as much as I love the film of The Princess Bride, I love the book even more.
I've never actually seen It's A Wonderful Life, but after that explanation of it, I might try and catch it.
ReplyDeleteAs for my favourite movie, I know it's not Christmasy in the least and is not even considered as good as the more commonly mentioned Apocalypse Now, but Platoon is actually my favourite movie. Of course, I can't put the original Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back and Raiders of the Lost Ark up there because I refuse to look at such Hallmarks of my youth with an subjectivity.
@IMForeman, I love the book as well, but the affair started for me with the movie, thanks to my sister & her husband acting out the fight scene in the dining hall with Count Rugen & Inigo - shouting lines at each other on the stairway until husband threw a big wooden shower brush at her as the dagger & gave her a sizeable bruise. *g*
ReplyDeleteI am totally with you on Serenity too, hell the whole season of Firefly for that matter. So much fun and snark and awesomesauce loaded into one little show. (Kinda like Leverage, for that matter...)
I can appreciate great films, but when it comes to favorites, I like movies that aren't afraid to just be good damn movies.
ReplyDeleteSo it's a toss-up between Ghostbusters, The Blues Brothers, Army of Darkness, and a few others.
It's a tie.
ReplyDeleteMILLER'S CROSSING and RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK
I think it's entirely possible that my favourite movie is that thing you do! There's competition, of course, and I don't claim it's the best movie of the movies I like, but I just might like it more than any of the rest.
ReplyDeleteMiller's Crossing is a good one I hadn't thought of.
ReplyDeleteBut at the end of the day it'll always be Evil Dead 2 for me.
The Lion In Winter. It's one of those movies for me that I can watch any time. If I just saw it yesterday, I'm happy to watch it again right now. One of my favorite games is imagining how iconic actors and actresses might play Henry and Eleanor. (Al Pacino's version of the disinheriting speech is great, but Anthony Hopkins' is sadder. In my head.)
ReplyDeleteCharles Bronson's The Mechanic, Brando/Sinatra's Guys and Dolls, and most recently The A-Team are some of my favorite movies.
ReplyDeleteThe Big Lebowski is my number one, but Casablanca, Godfather 1&2, and The Princess Bride are definitely up there.
ReplyDeleteJeff Bridges' performance in that movie along with all the other characters are priceless.
Movies I can watch over and over again, and which spark warm fuzzy feelings in my heart just thinking about them, and which are thus favourites: The Fifth Element; Kiss Kiss Bang Bang; Guys and Dolls (Brando/Sinatra version); Into the Woods (original Broadway cast).
ReplyDeleteGhostbusters. I find new things in Bill Murray's performance and in the writing almost every time I watch it. Timeless, brilliant and funny.
ReplyDeleteThat's tough. Searching for Bobby Fischer is great- I could watch that again right now (and I've seen it multiple times).
ReplyDeleteFirst movie that popped into my head was Adam's Rib.
Strictly Ballroom, Desk Set, Lord of the Rings trilogy, Empire Strikes Back are all high up there too.
My favorite movie is, in fact, It's A Wonderful Life.
ReplyDeleteThough American Beauty is in the running.
It's not the movie I watch the most, and I really have to be in the right mood, but my favorite movie is Hudson Hawk. It's a buddy, sci-fi, heist, conspiracy, alternate history action-comedy with super-villains, steampunk technology, Catholic conspiracies, and a man's quest for cappuccino. It is pretty much everything I like about movies wrapped up in lost treasure.
ReplyDeleteI love It's A Wonderful Life - both with and without the alternate perspective!
ReplyDeletebut it pales in comparison to Lady of Burlesque, starring Barbara Stanwyk. It's a murder mystery, a love story, a backstage comedy, and the oddest police procedural, ever. Bless its cotton socks.
Galaxy Quest always leaves me warm and fuzzy inside.
ReplyDeleteFunny theory, but it's wrong. People love It's A Wonderful Life because most people's dreams ARE crushed by family expectations and middle class responsibilities...And they are the lucky ones in this world. They are the ones who get validation by watching George's redemption. Most don't even get the chance to dream.
ReplyDeleteTHE QUIET MAN. John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara.
ReplyDeleteHonor, family and small town politics, romance, redemption.
With John Ford directing.
Rio Bravo.
ReplyDeleteOoo, favorite movie, wow. Not sure I can pick one.
ReplyDeleteMaster and Commander: Far Side of the World is high on the list I absolutely adore the Patrick O'Brian books and love the movie to bits.
For Christmas-y movies it's a tie between the Muppet Christmas Carol and The Polar Express (another book a love)
Still Sneakers. Always Sneakers.
ReplyDeleteThere's just too much -- con, heist, science!, comedy, pathos, one of the best all-star casts ever assembled, and even math.
I can't pick a favorite movie overall; there are too many I love to place one above the others. Although I will say, several of my favorites have been mentioned in the comments already.
ReplyDeleteBut my favorite Christmas movie is much easier: White Christmas.
@Dennis
ReplyDeleteA very good movie! I was watching is over Amazon the other day, and had two realizations:
1. My teenage self who watched that movie with awe and wonder would never have believe if me if I could tell him within fifteen years he'd be watching Sneakers over the Internet.
2. That is Donal Logue.
Too many movie favorites to limit myself to a single one, but I have a list -- All About Eve, The Big Sleep, Apartment for Peggy, Now Voyager, Casablanca, Sense & Sensibility (Emma Thompson's screenplay), On the Town, Auntie Mame, Born Yesterday, Blazing Saddles -- I could go on a while. All of those are movies I can (and have) watched repeatedly. Something about dialog and plot and character development...
ReplyDeleteThis doesn't mean I haven't watched more modern movies repeatedly, but I tend to watch those for different reasons (threats to end the world that are resolved by impossible acts of skill and guts are perfect for sleepless nights, and "King Kong vs. Godzilla" is my absolute favorite terrible movie.)
Now, Favorite Christmas movies -- the 1951 Alaistar Sim version of "Scrooge: A Christmas Carol"; Die Hard; The Apartment; White Christmas (I'm a sucker for Danny Kaye).
Now I will see if I can convince my husband to watch It's a Wonderful Life with this interpretation. He's forbidden it.
I honestly intensely dislike It's a Wonderful Life.
ReplyDeleteI have to admit, your take on it makes it a bit more watchable in my opinion.
...Although, I do love the SNL skit where the townsfolk form an angry mob and go after with rich old man that caused most of the problems.
Good times.
There are too many I love, and I haven't gotten picky or nostalgic enough to pick one of those yet, so here's the movie I loved, and saw over and over again as a kid, which explains so much about me:
ReplyDeleteNightmare Before Christmas. Yes, I'm one of those kids who had their young minds shaped by Tim Burton. Scary, huh?
Amongst many others, a few favorites include The Departed, Malcolm X, The Princess Bride, This is Spinal Tap, The Commitments, Casablanca, On Her Majesty's Secret Service, Slumdog Millionaire, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Inception, A Fish Called Wanda, and So I Married an Axe Murderer.
ReplyDeleteThe Great Race. I may very well name my first born son Max because of that movie. The list of close runner-ups is too long to go through. "Most-watched" probably goes to the Princess Bride, though, as it's my official comfort movie.
ReplyDeleteWhoops! Sorry.
ReplyDeleteThree way tie.
FABULOUS BAKER BOYS.
So John, when we gonna get D&D Discussion threads?
ReplyDeleteFavorite X-Mas movies:
Muppet Christmas Carol followed by Scrooged.
Favorite all time:
Star Wars, Princess Bride, Three/Four Musketeers.
It is so hard to pick just one movie to be the favorite child. I can't even get the list down to a few because, honestly, my favorite movie is always the one I just finished watching.
ReplyDeleteEven if it is a movie I have seen a dozen times and I watch it again, that one will once again take the top spot for a little while. So at this very moment in time it is "Letters to Juliet" but that will change before the day is over.
Casablanca. Everything about it is perfect. A Night At The Opera is a close second. There might be funnier scenes in other Marx Brothers films, but unlike the others, there aren't any clunkers here.
ReplyDeleteL. A. Confidential. A satisfyingly intricate plot, terrific acting, great dialog, cinematography that makes a perfect still out of nearly every frame, the 50s LA setting, and music by Jerry Goldsmith. How could anyone not love this movie?
ReplyDeleteRunner-up: Apollo 13. The exception that proves the rule that real life stories don't make good movies. (Ron Howard said they actually had to take two crises out of the story for fear it would "seem too melodramatic". )I saw it three times in the theater and at least half a dozen more on DVD and I still tear up every time I see the chutes come out. One of James Horner's best scores, too. Can't give a lot of credit for the writing though as so much of it was nearly copied from real life.
It's a Wonderful Life? Sorry, I've never seen that. I could never get past the title. ;)
Hey, guess what: I just unwrapped Season 1 of "Leverage"! Merry Christmas to me! :D And to you as well.
ReplyDeleteFavorite movie: "Singin' in the Rain." I'm very fond of IAWL as well. That's an interesting theory you've got there. I don't think it's true (for one thing, I don't think heaven will be all about validation of ourselves), but it's very interesting! :-)
The Seven Faces of Dr. Lao. The fortune teller scene really hit me when I first saw it as a kid.
ReplyDeleteThe Breakfast Club
ReplyDeleteFavorite Christmas movie: "The Snowman" and "The Nightmare Before Christmas" (tie).
ReplyDeleteFavorite movies, period (in addition to the aforementioned Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and Serenity): Brazil, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Don Hertzfeldt's "Rejected" (now available for free viewing on youtube), City of Lost Children.
It's a three way tie betwen Wristcutters: A Love Story, Bladerunner and The Nightmare Before Christmas.
ReplyDeleteFirst is because it's one of the few movies that I actually go "awww" at, second because it was my introduction to noirish stuff and last because. Just cause.
Oh, man, so many favorites!
ReplyDeleteFor Christmas, the faves are A Christmas Story, Muppet Christmas Carol and Patrick Stewart's Christmas Carol.
For the rest of the year … add me to The Princess Bride legion. Read the book in high school, saw the movie with hubby when we were dating, and now it's a permanent fixture in my iTunes. As is Secondhand Lions. Those two, to me, make a perfect double feature.
I'm also a sucker for Casablanca, Lion in Winter, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, and, cheesy as it is, Errol Flynn's Robin Hood. Also, Gone with the Wind. I think it's just hardwired into my Southern DNA to love that movie.
Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back (I refuse to acknowledge the existence of the sucky-beyond-description "other three"). Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Last Crusade (Sean Connery and Arthurian lore? dude, I am so there!).
Hunt for Red October. Sean Connery and Sam Neill. "I would have liked so see Montana" kills me every. single. time.
And about a hundred more.
Die Hard and Labyrinth tie. But Angel and the Badman, Tsosti, and The Defiant Ones all are way up there too.
ReplyDeleteI find choosing a favorite movie rather difficult because there are so many great ones that appeal at different times.
Choosing a favorite television show, on the other hand ... easy as saying "Leverage."
And here I forgot to jump on the bandwagons for Patrick Stewart's A Christmas Carol, The Princess Bride, Adam's Rib, and Star Wars.
ReplyDeleteAdding to the list with Repo! The Genetic Opera. I know, I know. But I cannot help myself.
The original King Kong. It has action, romance, adventure and the most human non-human protagonist ever. My second favorite is Michael Curtiz's The Adventures of Robin Hood
ReplyDeleteGet Carter The original, of course. The sense of despair, anger, and fuck the world and everyone in it is captured perfectly in every frame of film, every line of dialogue, and every note of the soundtrack.
ReplyDeleteOn "It's a Wonderful Life": I'm sure I felt Frank Capra turn over in his grave.
ReplyDeleteFavorite movies: Hatari! and Donovan's Reef (John Wayne's off-piece duo), Now Voyager, My Cousin Vinnie, and pretty much anything where empire waists, corsets and British accents are involved.
Your theory is the only thing that makes It's a Wonderful Life watchable!
ReplyDeleteFavorite movies, Casablanca, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and the pilot episode of Leverage.
The Fisher King
ReplyDeleteI LOVE Searching for Bobby Fisher. That and Night of the Hunter are my two favorites.
ReplyDeleteChristmas movies are harder - It's a Wonderful Life and A Christmas Story are my top two, but Scrooged is a not too distant third.
American History X.
ReplyDeleteI can only watch it so often though, because it punches you in the gut every time.
One of my anonymous brothers said:
ReplyDelete"People love It's A Wonderful Life because most people's dreams ARE crushed by family expectations and middle class responsibilities...And they are the lucky ones in this world. They are the ones who get validation by watching George's redemption. Most don't even get the chance to dream."
Yes and no about this. I wrestle with this every time I pass by any old haunt I used to frequent in college in the late 80s: there were probably a dozen ways my life could have gone, but as it works out, I had to give up on n-1 of those possibilities. We all do. Even if George Bailey had managed to explore the world, he would have come home to a town in ruin; try as you might, you always give something up. Just make sure you're not giving up the things that are the most meaningful to you. I don't think George did.
As to favorite movies, "Casablanca" and "Fisher King" are right up there. But my absolute favorites still have to be "The Horror of Party Beach" and "The Girl in Gold Boots", MST3K style.
(Favorite comics-wise, the first 25 or so issues of "Blue Beetle" are at the top of the list. Just thought I'd put that out there, because their author deserves credit wherever it can be offered.)
Favorite movie = The Princess Bride, but that's not what I really want most to say.
ReplyDeleteThe alternate explanation for It's a Wonderful Life heavily suggests that it is, in fact, the first Matrix movie; the movie that shows us the original Matrix as described by Agent Smith to Morpheus.
I am also compelled to add, simply because of its sheer horribleness (and, thus, epic fun) Night of the Lepus.
ReplyDeleteI think it was probably proginally one of those God-awful 70s TV "the perils of scince gon amuck" movies, but it is must-see viewing for my entire family whenever we can find it.
The scene of a man in a rabbit suit jumping through a window to kill another man in his bed alone makes the thing worthwhile.
(And, yeah, that should be "probably originally." Ugh.)
ReplyDeleteMovies, shmoovies.
ReplyDeleteWhat did you think of the Doctor Who Christmas Special?
Favorite Movie? The Blues Brothers.
ReplyDeleteEver since I was a kid, it makes me feel good. Pure magic.
i love this movie..,
ReplyDeleteI listen with love to my body's messages
My body is always working toward optimum health. My body wants to be Whole and Healthy, I cooperate and become healthy, whole and complete.
Thanks to this rerun post and its comments, I've spent a pleasant few hours today watching BOTH It's a Wonderful Life AND the Doctor Who Christmas special. I love a good redemption theme.
ReplyDeletePottersville looked like a fun, happenin' place to be - so long as you didn't have the bad taste to be poor, female, or a migrant.
Personal favorite? So hard to narrow it down. Blues Brothers, Terminator 2, Blazing Saddles, Repo Man, Harold and Maude, the Matrix series... all special in their own way, and I just know there are lots of other crackin' ones that I haven't even seen yet!
Raiders of the Lost Ark. Most nerds say star Wars changed their life. I was the one kid pretending to have a bullwhip instead of a lightsaber.
ReplyDeleteThe Maltese Falcon and Casablanca get into fist fights for second place. Occasionally, Star Wars runs in with a steel chair.
"Raiders of the Lost Ark" features the best Harrison Ford moment ever. You know the one. I don't even have to say it.
ReplyDeleteomg - very hard to pick just one favorite. But, if I could only have a few on a deserted island (with electricity and a tv/dvd combo set - oh and a margarita mixer), they would be:
ReplyDeleteLast of the Mohicans; Princess Bride; LadyHawke; The Muppet Movie; Muppet Treasure Island; Gladiator; 3.10 to Yuma and Master and Commander
I find it hard to even think in terms of 'favorite', but if I had to pick one, at this particular moment I think I'd go with "Ocean's Eleven" (Soderbergh's version, all the way). A movie that just makes me feel good, like a get together with my coolest friends. But cool in a warm way, if you know what I mean.
ReplyDeleteBut also some great candidates from the others!
Either Godfather or Jaws, depending on my mood at the time.
ReplyDeleteAlso way up there:
Rushmore
Almost Famous
Little Miss Sunshine
Raising Arizona
Goodfellas
Midnight Run
Godfather 2
Let's see: Heat, The Departed, Bringing Out the Dead (Scorcese ambulance driver flick), Le Samourai, The Wild Bunch, Stray Dog (early Kurosawa noir), High and Low (late-ish Kurosawa noir) and Ace in the Hole (Billy Wilder journalism noir). Those are my go-tos.
ReplyDeleteSix-String Samurai
ReplyDeleteMy favorite is Match Point. Something about the writing and acting in that movie just clicks with me.
ReplyDeleteBabette's Feast. Not only are some shots beautiful recreations of famous Flemish paintings, but the movie brilliant contrasts religion vs. devotion. This movie says everything I believe about faith and artistry, both being gifts from God, and does it in such an artistic, lyrical way. Can't keep a dry eye ever at the end.
ReplyDeleteIf forced to choose, I'll go with Diva, although in terms of reruns happily sat through, it's probably The Fifth Element. Favorite Christmas movie is the original Miracle on 34th Street.
ReplyDeleteIs it more depressing? To think that he spends eternity with his life unvalidated--that is, that his life really was insignificant, and heaven is just a delusion meant to make him feel happy with that insignificance, is that more depressing?
ReplyDeleteBut then, isn't everyone's life essentially insignificant? On a long enough timeline, I mean. Is that what heaven is like for everyone? Not a real place, but just a sense of validation--the experience of meaning, because there is no actual meaning?
I read an account of early experiments with nitrous oxide that talk about how they triggered a hallucinatory sense of significance, without actually creating an accompanying hallucination of significant experience.
I don't know what John thought of the Doctor Who Christmas Carol, but I bloody loved it, even though it had a shark in it. I can even forgive it for putting the idea of "Face Spiders" in my head, because it was so brilliant.
ReplyDeleteThe Night of the Hunter.
ReplyDeleteFrom the opening crane shot to the exhausted orphans in the boat framed by two bunnies, Charles Laughton made every goddamn shot exactly what he wanted it to be.
Plot development was flawless, letting each member of a great cast extract every drop of expression from his or her character.
And scary? Robert Mitchum's preacher Powell is safely placed among the twenty or so most perfectly realized evil characters in film. Oh, he was great in Cape Fear, but he never topped this one.
For Christmas movie, I'd have to say _The Sure Thing_. Okay, only kind of joking. _White Christmas_ is one of my favorites in the season.
ReplyDeleteFor others, Princess Bride, Casablanca, Singin' in the Rain are all the kinds of movies I watch whenever they are on. As is Pride and Prejudice (yes, the Kiera version) and Sense and Sensibility.
I don't know if that's even an answerable question for me. I can pick "my favorite right now" or "my favorite for when I'm in a certain mood" or "my favorite in a given subgenre", but I don't know that I have one supreme overall favorite movie.
ReplyDeleteI'm totally with mere on favorite Christmas movie, though. White Christmas every time. Crosby, Kaye, and Clooney just put me in a good mood with their singin' and dancin' ways.
@GregM: Oooh, Hertzfeldt's on YouTube? ::runs off to watch::
@Daisy Bookworm: Zydrate comes in a little glass vial. ;)
No love for "Harvey"?
ReplyDelete"Well, Harvey has overcome not only time and space, but any objections"
..and Jesse White looking up "Pooka" in the dictionary...
Yes, "Princess Bride" is a treasure, but how about "Arsenic and Old Lace"? "He just stayed under his bed for days and wouldn't be anybody"
The Rules of the Game, by far. Comedy and pathos in perfect balance. The most balanced ensemble acting I know of. Sharply observed vignettes brought together at the end by the most brilliant tracking shot ever (sorry, Orson). If Chekhov collaborated on a movie with Aeschylus it would look like this.
ReplyDeleteStar Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Everything good and true about the Star Trek franchise is in it. The look on Khan's face when the Reliant's shields drop is worth the price of a movie ticket alone.
ReplyDeleteI read a lot of helpful material above!
