Despite what you may have read, my hatred of cliffhanger finales has not changed. "The Maltese Falcon Job", part 2 of the Season 2 Finale, air this Wednesday. You will never see a hiatus-long TBC on Leverage.
so looking forward to seeing how you resolve the season. not looking forward to waiting for season 3. Thanks for making my fave show and for answering our questions.
wv: pedroc -- what you use for pedicures. French if spelled pedrocque
Personally, I think, if you have to manipulate fans into tuning in next season by giving them some over-blown cliffhanger, then maybe you aren't really doing your job DURING the season.
I'll be back for Season 3, because I've enjoyed the hell out of each and every episode you've given us so far. You've already earned my continuing viewership.
Thank God for your hatred of cliffhangers! Besides, Leverage has no need for cliffhangers anyway! It's just way too awesome not to follow into the next season.
and thank you for that! I really hate cliffhanger finales. I dont see the point. Are people really going to tune in JUST to see what happens next after five-six months? by then who would give a fuck anymore? (I certainly dont) If I keep watching a show it's because the show is awesome and not cause it I HAVE to know what happens next after some OTT cliffhanger. Just lazy writing if you ask me.
That's one of the reasons why Leverage is one of my fave shows. the writers dont resort to cheap tricks! You guys got my viewership and my respect :)
I'd like you to know I made a Leverage-themed valentine for my wife this weekend. On the outside of the card was one of the promo pictures of the show, with the cast and logo, from the TNT website. On the inside, I wrote, "You're adorable". She thought it was great.
I don't know why you guys aren't making and selling them yourselves.
Bless you, sir. Sincerely, I could not picture why it would be so, because you and the rest of the Leverage crew have not resorted to cheap tricks so far. TV Guide is playing a mental game and I don't like it. Why would they do that???
HA! I KNEW I had seen somewhere that you hated those. I just KNEW it. Couldn't have tracked it down, though, to save my life. So I am very glad you restated it for posterity. Thank you, kind sir, for putting our collective minds at ease.
Having already seen the finale (iTunes seems to have released it early), it's hard to say that there's not an element of TBC in the end of that one, too.
You have a way of creating cliffhanger-like expectation without an actual cliffhanger, and I alternate between wanting to applaud you and wanting to punch you.
Damn you, John Rogers, for being such an awesome writer.
The true cliffhanger really is such a crap, cheap, easy way to go. I expect a little more from this show, and I'm glad to hear I won't be disappointed.
After reading all the posts from the Three Strikes Job, I'm inclined to agree with those who think Nate'll end up in jail at the end of this one. You've said that the title to the Season 3 premiere is a big spoiler - "The Break Out Job" perhaps? Plus, if you guys really want to explore Nate's struggle to accept that he might have some criminal aspect in his nature, what better (and more ironic) way than to have the team's records wiped clean thanks to a deal but him ending up in jail and then a fugitive with a record?
My mind will probably change 10 times between now and Wednesday night, but for now, that's my guess and I'm sticking with it.
Well, you could kind of say that about the first season finale. They all went their separate ways, but we knew - if the show got picked up - that they'd get together again. I can live with that kind of thing.
I haven't seen the finale yet. If it ends with Nate being in jail, though I don't think I'd be thrilled with that kind of ending, I could maybe live with it knowing a kick ass season opener would get him out. I'd just spend the hiatus imagining how they'd go about it. And it would make an excellent opportunity to bring Sophie back.
So I'm pretty sure I can live with whatever Rogers considers a non-cliffhanger. There's bound to be at least a little bit of TBC, kind of like there's bound to be something destroyed, at the end of a season. Kind of like a tradition, methinks.
I agree with Rebecca - that with the team scattering (at the end of S1) there was an element of TBC - how would you get them back together. In fact, I think you wrote something to the effect of after what you did at the end of S1 how were you going to get them back together. That leaves me waiting to see if you scatter them again at the end of S2....and, if so, will Sophie (or whatever she is going to be called when she comes back) reunite them again?? Tom Petty said it best, "The waiting is the hardest part."
wv: unwho - the Seuss characters NOT involved with the Grinch.
Oh, thank God. I tend to throw things when the fateful words appear on the screen. There was one memorable X Files TBC that I put a beer bottle through the wall. All the way through. It was an interior wall with no insulation, the bottle wound up in my bedroom.
I'm fine with season ending cliff hangers if 1) the next season is for sure and 2) they're done well.
I can think a number of first episodes that are great, and their follow up is awful (Leverage Director Frakes starred in a number of the ones I can think of...)
They are neither a good thing or a bad thing...just another tool in the writer's tool box that can be used well or bad.
oh thank god. i speak for all ten of the lovely lost souls i converted to this show, that sit in a mass body pile in front of a tiny lil tv, and suffer through eps of dark blue and csi ny to see the encore ep that we appriciate you clearing that up. tv guide, among other sources, had us scared out of our minds.
I can completely live with various arghs and such, but the first season was so lovely and perfect a story arc that I'm completely spoiled by it. A real, full out cliffhanger would have been SUCH a ruination.
I regard each season as separate parts of a series -- you know, like in a really good book series. Yes, the story goes on and there are questions hanging about to be answered, but they are not immediate questions. The current arc of immediate questions are, if not answered, at least settled for the time being. All that is fine and proper, good writing. Things come to a particular end and, even though we hope they continue, the pause is on the beat and feels right.
I am really enjoying how this show is put together. The episodes can be enjoyed out of order and by themselves, but with the little effort of watching in order and keeping the thread, whole extra layers of story open up. That the show unfolds for all this fannish, geekish discussion is really a compliment to the writing, the acting, the directing, all the research and detail, and the way everything melds together. That we all speculate and argue an make jokes is really an indication of the show's quality.
Ok, weird metaphor time. Leverage is very much like a wonderful cup of hot chocolate I had this weekend at a restaurant. The thick layer of real whipped cream sprinkled with cocoa powder made it look good and tasted lovely. The chocolate itself was thick and just sweet enough. But, they'd coated the inside of the cup with Nutella, which added all new layers and flavors. The further I got into the cup, the more I enjoyed it, and I scraped that cup clean.
Same with Leverage. The more I get into the show, the more I find, and I want to get it all! Happy Obsessed Fangirl!
There's cliffhangers, and then there's CLIFFHANGERS.
As said through this thread, the scatter at the end of season 1 was good as we had the anticipation of "how the heck does he get them all back together", and let me say your method of using Sophie to do it was great.
That sort of cliffhanger is fun, the season's worth of story arc is complete and the new season will bring a new story.
The CLIFFHANGER, though is cheap, and seriously screams 1980's TV. The '80's had almost every show ending with some sort of "spray bullets into a room and work it out during contract renegotiation". That sort of game does not go over well with this viewer. There is no closure to the season's worth of story-telling.
Rogers, thanks for the confirmation that we will have something closer to the first.
@Mary Sue, My guess is it's the XF episode with Mulder trapped in the train car (a resolution that was poorly ... well resolved.)
Thank you, sir! (Though I trusted there would be none; you're too much a prince for that.)
I, too, regard cliffhangers as a writing staff's way of saying, "We're not at all sure we've done our job well enough through the season to make you come back for more, so we'll throw in a bit of cheap manipulation here and hold you hostage." It's a stunt. It demonstrates a lack of faith in the writing, in the characters, and in the audience.
You all, however, show a remarkable amount of faith in your audience (my God, you actually assume that we're intelligent!), in your writers and actors, and you have given us characters we'd follow to the grocery store, and certainly into the next season. So, than k you for that.
@Matthew E – Damn it! Why didn't I think of Leverage V-Day cards?!
I would like to see Leverage move from the cable-typical 13-episode season to a broadcast-similar 22-23 episode season. Were TNT to go for it, would you be willing and able to oblige? Or are you pushing for a Tara spinoff?
I totally agree that there are cliffhangers, and then there are CLIFFHANGERS. Some are groundbreaking and spawn T-shirts, coffee mugs, etc. - like the "Who Shot JR?" of long ago Dallas. I'm dating myself, but, this is the cliffhanger I think by which all are compared. Then there is the CLIFFHANGER of major suckage - such as the infamous Muldavian Masacre on Dynasty. Good God, that was awful. In my youth, it almost made me stop watching that dreck.
So, I join everyone else in thanking you in advance for not putting us through that torture. But, answering questions and finishing arcs can sometimes cause new questions to be asked. Now, THAT I like and Leverage is good at it.
Count me as someone who thinks that Nate Ford is going to jail. He wouldn't turn over on his team. Would he, Mr Rogers?
I must admit the "argh you bastard" reaction from someone who has seen the finale has me a bit worried. I'm wondering who the "bastard" is - Sterling or Nate.
For those who got excited about the possibility of perhaps catching the finale 'early', I can confirm that the episode -- all reference to the episode -- has been removed from both iTunes and Netflix On-Demand.
I'm reminded of advice from my college philosophy prof, who taught in prisons during the summer months: "If you're getting away with something, for God's sake don't tell anybody."
This entire SEASON, much like last season, is one big cliffhanger. What will ultimately happen with Nate's drinking? What happens when Sophie comes back? Will the crew stay together? If not, how will they explode (or implode, as the case may be)?
Sure, technically this can be categorized as "good writing" or "compelling television", but I think those labels are just high-falutin' fancy terms for cliffhangers.
Of course, I happen to LOVE cliffhangers, and good writing, and compelling television, so my BS call probably isn't as strident as it might be, and it's definitely leavened with a healthy dose of gratitude for making such well-written and compelling cliffhangers.
So I guess I retract my BS call. But just barely. You got lucky this time, Rogers...
I'll have to agree with everyone else here: Thank you. After spending ten years dealing with Stargate SG-1's idea of season endings, and mid-season endings, it's nice to know I've been pointed in the direction of a show that won't leave me hanging on the fate of the galaxy for four months.
Will the split finale be a trend, though? I don't mind it -- it gives you more time to build the tension, just wondering.
Excellent. Although, in fairness, since you sadly cannot get Majel Roddenberry to announce the recap in your season opener, it's no longer possible to do it right anyway.
I always hated the cliffhangers myself, but after months of sitting on "holy crap, Picard is a borg!" (or whatever) finally hearing Majel intone last time on Star Trek: The Next Generation had a certain all's-right-with-the-world quality I don't think anyone else can ever quite reproduce.
I seem to have wandered somewhat afield, but you talk cliffhangers and that's what comes to mind.
You have a way of creating cliffhanger-like expectation without an actual cliffhanger, and I alternate between wanting to applaud you and wanting to punch you.
Damn you, John Rogers, for being such an awesome writer.

Pretty much the only way I've gotten through the week is by telling myself that what it LOOKS like will happen in the episode (i.e. everything going to pieces, backstabbing and betrayal and DOOOOOOOOM!) can NOT actually be happening.
But really, I'm just conning myself because given the incredible writing and characters on this show I have NO IDEA what will in fact occur.
Thank you for creating a show that even without the use of cheap dramatic tricks you can leave your audience on tenterhooks.

Thank you for the hatred of cliffhangers, because this week is killing me.
I can't imagine what a hiatus long cliffhanger would do to me.
Of course, I kind of dread Wednesday because then I have to wait for Season 3. Grrrrr.
Re: Anonymous:
John's said in the past that we won't see more than a 15-episode season, because he just doesn't think they can sustain the quality for more episodes.
And I'm fine with that. I'd rather see 15 good episodes a season than 15 good and 7 or 8 dross. :)

Jeez, Wednesday can't get here fast enough.
Adding my thanks to not leaving us with a cliffhanger.
I had remembered your saying that but was still doubting a little so THANKS for the reassurance! I can stop biting my nails now.

I can't speak for the original poster, but at a guess I'd say it was refering to our own John Rogers...
I call BS.
This entire SEASON, much like last season, is one big cliffhanger. What will ultimately happen with Nate's drinking? What happens when Sophie comes back? Will the crew stay together? If not, how will they explode (or implode, as the case may be)?

Thank you so much for once again thinking of the fans and not leaving it open ended.
Awesome preview, can't wait to see the rest.
Any word on season 4 yet?
I seem to have wandered somewhat afield, but you talk cliffhangers and that's what comes to mind.

thank-you, I was a little scared we would have to wait months to find out what happens
