Percy Jackson trailer

Seriously, if I were 12, this would have melted my brain. I love this trailer.

  1. I keep trying to get my son to read these books. I suspect if he sees the movie, he'll be more inclined to. But despite my fantasy leanings, he's much more interested in spies and espionage. Leverage for YA?

  2. Clearly, I need to read these books RIGHT NOW, as they seem totally made for me. When I was 11, we did the Greek Mythology unit in school and I read the entire book in one night, and then raised our school's library for more. This (quite logically) then led to Perez and Wein's Wonder Woman post-crisis reboot being the first comic I ever actually subscribed to. And the love never really went away. It just wandered off into Irish mythology next, followed by Japanese and Romany and the end result is something liek 10 freestanding bookcases in my living room...

Also, beardy Pierce Brosnan FOR THE WIN!

  3. I'm still trying to get over my disappointment from the first trailer, which had me convinced right up to the end that it was going to be SHAZAM!

That IS the kind of visual style I'd love to see for Captain Marvel, though.

Not having read the books I really shouldn't comment - but I can't help keep from thinking of what happened to Prometheus when he snagged fire.

Cam, the books are fairly grounded in a kid's spy adventure thriller genre. Rick Riordan is a great writer and he started this series for his son who lost interest in reading. Mile a minute stuff, done well.

    Tara, the books are fabulous!

Rogers, MY 12 y.o. is giddy that the movie is scheduled to release on his birthday!

  7. My kids read these books over and over (and over) again (they're 9 and 7, btw). I need to start reading them--I used to be so into the Greek myths stuff myself!

  8. So is it directed by Chris Columbus? Because he has a history of disappointing with this kind of thing.

So does seeing how awesome Vancouver is to film in make you more inclined to consider it if Leverage had to move locations for season 4? Because you're totally gonna get a 4th season...we the fans know these things.

I'm 21 and I love these books, not just for the good stories, but the absolute dedication to keeping the books as close to the mythology as possible, which is just about never done.

As much as I am looking forward to Clash of the Titans, I really wish that people would stop pulling the "Hades is trying to take over the world because he's God of the Dead". Seriously, could argue for hours.

But as much as the cast is awesome etc for Percy Jackson I think the movie will probably be the only one and be a little disappointing. Such are these things. But I'll still watch it a million times anyway.

Goddamit all, people, get it through your head. Sigma means S! If you keep pretending it's an E, I am very unlikely to watch your film.

  12. my nephew has been loving these books.

we will be there when it opens.

  13. The sigma E thing bothers me too. (Even "My Big Fat GRSSK Wedding" got that wrong. In an autobiographical movie about Greek-American culture, how is that even possible?)

And, Chris Columbus sure does make awesome movie trailers. Too bad his actual movies suck so much.

  14. To the people obsessing over the sigma used as an E:

Americans in general would not understand the use of a sigma as an S. It doesn't look like and S to them, it looks like an E. That's why its used as an E, because that's what it looks like. Since the sigma glyph is not in the set of glyphs commonly used by the English language, and most people only understand that it's greek, and not what the glyph means, it's use to substitute for the E glyph to connote something as greek is understandable.

To me, it's just the sum of all things.

  15. nobodies wins thread.

anyway, how do they reconcile the fact that in the mythologies most greek gods are actually terrible, terrible people?

Though I suppose that could be a draw.

For a more grown up take on it i'd suggest Gods and Undergrads
    (http://www.eatyourlipstick.com/LelainaWorld.htm)

(WHich is oddly what I thought of the trailer. Oh hey, it's middle school gods and undergrads by someone who can [sorta] keep to a release schedule)

  16. @Aussie Ash: Well, I'm ... let's say "over 35," and I love these books too. As does my 13-year-old.

I am worried about Chris Columbus, though.

@Theliel: There's nothing to reconcile. In the books, the gods are terrible, terrible people. Especially to young demigods.

  18. Thanks for pointing out the availability of trailers. My 12 yo (now 13) son and I have been drooling in anticipation ever since we found out they were making the first Percy Jackson book into a movie.

I agree with the others that the books are amazingly well-written, fun to read (at any age - my son has read & re-read them so many times we've lost count), AND incredibly true to the original myths upon which they're based.

Obviously I don't know how much of the book will make it into the movie, but your concerns over Prometheus are well-founded. Fortunately Riordan has an answer. He's just clever that way.

And Aussie Ash - because of that, I don't think you'll be disappointed w/ Clash of the Titans. He's got your concerns covered too as well as yours Theliel (for the reasons Inconstant Reader cites).

In fact, I bet nobodez is right about the Sigma thing (much as it bugs me too) and in Riordan's view of current-day mythology in real life, it would even make sense a la Olympus following the center of Western culture.

Anyway - clever story-telling for thinking people. No wonder there are other Leverage fans who are looking forward to the movie as much as we are. I love that my son loves these books and sincerely hope that the movie can do it justice.

I gotta say, the first two Harry Potter movies were pretty good, and they were directed by Chris Columbus, so I feel pretty good about this movie. Plus, the trailer was freakin' awesome! Plus one for CC.

The only problem I have is that Annabeth is a BRUNETTE!!! Isn't she supposed to be blonde? Maybe it's just me, but I could have sworn that Rick Riordan said that the Athena's kids were blondes, not brunettes.
