It's before the episode airs, so I obviously don't have a question yet, but I did want to just thank you a) for this blog generally, 2) for answering questions about episodes the way you do, and III) being willing to take obnoxious criticism from long-haired hippie weirdo freaks (that would be me waxing snotty about the Eliot B-plot a couple weeks ago).

Besides the fact that you're witty and funny and smart and stuff, thus making the blog good reading anyhow, it's also edumacational, and that ain't hay. So thank you for that, and please do keep it up.

(Also, where are Nelson's guitar posts? I miss the guitar porn!!!!)

Not a question on #205, because I am a DVD junkie and don't watch anything until it comes out on DVD and I can watch the whole season in one big gulp (which I did, over the course of two extremely awesome weekends that justified every bit of faith I had that buying this series, sight unseen, would be a good purchase and a fun experience, and which made fans out of the whole household, one of which just moved out and is already planning to pick the first season up himself...)

Deep breath...

Given all that, I was curious: How's the show doing on DVD? Happy good numbers? How important are happy good DVD numbers to the continued run of a series on TV?

(If you actually want to answer this, you can snip that first paragraph. I won't feel hurt. :) )

Less an episode question and more of a "probably should go with the flow" question.

Many times at the end of a con, the team gives the client a check, presumably for whatever amount he/she/they have coming to them.

I've often wondered how the clients explain this sudden windfall to the bank and or the IRS when they go to deposit it...not to mention the kid getting a full fledged business in the ultimate fighting episode.

Seems like that much unexplained money showing up could raise several thousand red flags.

Eliot and a bone saw.

I shall be useless at work today.

And I second (or third or whatever) Hardison in a dress. This MUST be done. While Eliot's fighting the bear.

gwangung said...

While Eliot's fighting the bear.

That's GOT to be the code name for the Mossad agent.

Just a general question, not related to this episode... Last season in the Miracle Job Eliot made mention of a nephew... Are we ever going to hear about him again or find out some other tidbit about Eliot's family? Just curious.... BTW... Still loving this show.. my one must watch no matter what each week!

Bryan-Mitchell said...

i'm asking this before the show airs so it isn't about the episode obviously.

In reading the last Q&A I got to thinking about the fact that the issues regarding the people the team has helped have all been pretty clear-cut good vs evil. Will there ever be an episode where the issue isn't so black and white? Where maybe it isn't as obvious that the bad guy is "bad" or that maybe the team members are split on if the issue warrants their involvement?

Does TNT have any plans to have a Leverage marathon, showing the first season episodes? I think that would be a nice way to spend Labor Day!

Anonymous said...

@Bryan Mitchell

I think the isues of good and evil and the team being split have already been dealt with a lor, considering there has only been 17 episodes.

Like in the nigerian job, where the good guy client turned into the bad guy.

Or the 12 step job where the bad guy was just mixed up and had good intentions.

Or the wedding and beantown bailout jobs that Nate didnt want anything to do with. Then there's the stork job where Eliot thinks kidnapping a child isnt what they do and Parker later goes against the team decision and tries to rescue all the children.

Or the fairy godparent job where Sophie and Eliot both object to using a child in their con.

Most of Leverage seems to be a gray area to me. Thats one of the things i like about it.

You have a better memory than I do! I had to go look up most of those titles. (And it looks like I didn't see The Stork Job so that's an extra episode for me to go watch yay!)

I guess what i'm asking about is where the disagreement between the team or the lack of a clear bad guy is more central to the episode.

This isn't to say that I haven't liked the show so far. I like it a lot (almost as much as Blue Beetle) but just think it would be entertaining to see

Anyone know who the TV Anchor is on tonights Three Days of the Hunter Job???

"TAPS" 28 years later......gotta love that one. I think I just found my favorite Hardison moments in this one. Looks like he had a headache every time he finished those scenes!

Anonymous said...

I don't know if I have an episode related question yet, but I've got to ask this.

What PR genius decided to advertise Nancy Grace's new book during this episode of Leverage? This is either idiocy or evil genius.

Samantha said...

1. Where do all the characters live in relation to one another? It would be weirdly hilarious/codependent if they all lived in the same building.

2. Parker's bizarre--sexual tension, I guess? with ladies is A+++, but will there ever be a payoff? Or is it just a throwaway gag?

3. Will there be a gag reel on the s2 dvds? My need for outtakes burns with all the blue-white intensity of an O-class star.

4. You guys are doing an awesome job. Thank you for all your work.

Anonymous said...

@Bryan Mitchell

Not so much a good memory as the flu 3 weeks ago. I cant keep up with new plots when I'm ill and rewatching season 1 Leverage was like chicken soup for my fevered brain.

Ann said...

TAPS homage anyone?? [Homage, (n.)respect, reverence, deference] Been listening to commentaries too much, sorry! Looks as good in a uniform as he did then. But the hair... not regulation! OK every time Aldis looks around with this weeks disguise, I laugh out loud. Hysterical! Gee, how hi does Aldis' voice go? I can't really come up with a question but wanted to tell you this has to be my favorite episode of the season so far. Reminds me so much of last season. What a cast, what a crew, WHAT A WRITING STAFF! Hoorah!

Havenward said...

I'm really adoring the development of Parker and Hardison here as players in the con... Parker especially. Brilliant, in comparison to Stork Job. Also, there's so much love for Eliot screwing with Parker and Hardison. Very subtle but happy-making growth there too.

My question is this: Is Sophie's leadership suffering this time around because of Nate's control issues (jumping in on her, where while he was drunk he'd be more laid back) and because of her break up? Don't Hardison and Eliot compliment her leadership abilities in Second David Job (which was after the building blown up, to be fair...). I'm just a little confused about how that character arc is tracking...

So, am I missing something, or is the second straight week they tell us to stay tuned for scenes from the next episode, then give us a Dark Blue promo, and then launch straight into Dark Blue with no Leverage preview? Let Bruckheimer stay in his own damn timeslot!

And was Beth Broderick really climbing that fence herself in a skirt and heels? What a trouper.

Jen said...

How did you luck out to get a Nancy Grace commercial during this episode? ;)

cliff said...

Golf claps for "Project Destiny", good sir.

frabjous said...

This episode made me laugh, multiple times. Elliot and Parker, confirming to Nate that yes, he does sound that creepy. That whole scene with Elliot at the computer, and the perfect surrealist ending of Parker with the gas mask. "I like it when we switch jobs. It's exciting!"

My question - did you know that your benevolent network overlords had a cross-promotion deal with Nancy Grace, or was that just the sheerest good luck?

Unknown said...

so, with only two eps. left for the summer, do you guys have a date for the winter premier picked out already?

AntiSocialButterfly said...

This episode was amazing! Great Job! I can only imagine how many outtakes of Aldis you will be putting in the deleted scenes on the Season 2 DVD.

Quick Question: What is Area 52? Or at least what do you imagine it to be? Also I love that Eliot knows the truth about the government conspiracies. I'd expect that of Hardison, but it makes sense now that Eliot would know it too.

P.S. Sorry about the anonymous Nancy Grace post. I forgot to put my name in.

Thanks again for another amazing episode.

Christina Lollobrigida said...

I don't have any questions at all for the episode, just a lot of praise. It was such a great episode, and this season you've been giving us so much more depth to the characters and chances for us to see them grow, not only as individuals but as a team. I loved the episode and it will definitely go down as one of my top five.

Well done, just all around to the whole team over there well done.

IMForeman said...

That was way too good a thing having that Nancy Grace commercial air during this episode.

If only the Leverage gang were real...

I am loving season 2 as much as 1. Only Leverage puts the same goofy grin on my face that Doctor Who does. No small feat.

Ashley said...

This episode was the best one yet! I couldn't stop laughing, especially on the parts where Eliot is yanking Parker's chain with all the conspiracies. And Hardison in a fro? Awesome!

There was one thing that I was unable to believe. Nate would never of been able to step a foot onto that Military base, and would have never been able to take prisoners like that. It was wholly unrealistic.

Question. Was the scene with Eliot wearing the apron and snapping on the plastic gloves taken from ShowTimes "Dexter," or was it just a coincidence?

Becky said...

Very enjoyable episode. Seeing the characters slip into other roles was a lot of fun.

I don't have an episode question, I have one about the dvds.

Was there a gag reel hidden as an easter egg on the Season 1 dvd set? If not, maybe the Season 2 dvd set could have gag reels for both seasons. ;)

Unknown said...

Not a question about 205, just something i've been thinking about since 204. Will we ever see Eliot in a fight that goes wrong, where he comes out of it badly hurt?

LOVING season two so far by the way! keep up the great work :)

Anonymous said...

OK Great Episode, But I gotta ask did you know there were going to be multiple Nancy Grace Commercial during this ep? It was just to Perfect.

Is Parker really that gullible? I wasn't sure if she was just joking around with them in her strange off beat way or she really was totally going for it all Area 52 and The Council lol.

Carver said...

Great show, favorite show on television.

Main question, which kitchen appliance truly is killing us? My friend had some ideas, but I was going with the Magic Bullet.

Oh, and can I have a job? I make a great cup of coffee.

Unknown said...

You guys hit a homer with this one! This was one of your best episodes, bar none. Beth Broderick was perfect casting.

Question time: Monica Hunter was obviously quite substantively based on the Queen Bottom Feeder, Nancy Grace. Given HN and TNT are part of the same corporate "family," how did this help, hassle or hinder your creating the character?

Kes said...

Not finished watching yet, but Elliot turning Parker into a conspiracy buff is hilarious!! Does Elliot actually believe the moon landing was faked or is he just playing with Parker's head?

IMForeman said...

Oh, another question:

Who do I have to complain to about being forced to watch some of Dark Blue if I want to see a preview for next week's Leverage.

I know TNT wants to promote their new "Gritty Emmy" (Apologies to Kevin Bishop)series, but this is dirty pool. I have no interest in Dark Blue. I feel the audience for Leverage and the audience for Dark Blue are probably very disparate groups.

I'd like to be able to see a preview for Leverage, but I just don't want to be forced to see a program I don't want to see.

To date, I have not seen a preview for any Leverage episode this season due to my refusal to watch Dark Blue.

Anonymous said...

Brilliant mix of humour and con. Favourite episode so far this season. So many witty one liners. (she's walking into the closet!)

I would ask you a question, but i'm sure you're not at liberty to tell me.

Gypsyfenix said...

I loved the whole government conspiracy angle! Such a wealth of material!
This is a character question: Does Eliot really believe in the Lunar Landing Theory, or is he just yanking Parker's chain.
Also, will we hear more about Eliot's involvement in "The Council" or are you just yanking OUR chain?

Rather than watching Dark Blue, you CAN catch the Leverage previews ("Sneak Peeks") at TNT's website, usually the same night, and for Macs, at tntweknowdrama's youtube channel, although the latter often takes a few days to post.

Eliot doesn’t crap where he eats. Thank you. I’m so tired of shows that assume if you work together you sleep together.

We’ve seen some of Nate and Hardison’s homes and I can picture Sophie in either an English cottage style or elegant French; Eliot with dark colors, lots of wood and souvenirs from his travels (gold monkeys, etc.) I cannot picture how Parker would live. Will we ever see their personal spaces?

After this show I realized what the last few were missing - that “oh shit, how do we get out of this?!!?!?” tension. Will that build more in the last couple of episodes? Will the last one leave some loose ends since there are more episodes coming?

Love Hardison’s funky eye, btw.

Havenward said...

On the second watch through, it suddenly occured to me that the leather gloves and apron Eliot was wearing, coupled with the line "Forgive me, I was just... cleaning up." seemed exceptionally familiar. Was that a nod to something in particular? (I confess, it reminded me a lot of The Burbs...)

Ditto IMForeman: To date, I have not seen a preview for any Leverage episode this season due to my refusal to watch Dark Blue.

One of my favorites, close to the top (The Wedding Job is #1) and how lucky to get a Nancy Grace commercial on the same night you're gutting her.

My only question is ... can you please go after even bigger political pundits? Will you please give Glenn Beck a huge snuggie, right over his head?

And Hannity ... and O'Reilly ... and not to mention the KIng, Rush.

Please, pretty please?

Unknown said...

I so thought when you had Monica talking into the cameras about how she just wants to scare her her viewers that was somehow going to make it into the endgame. Well played on that Red herring sir.

I would love to be a fly on the wall when someone tells Nancy grace her book was advertised during a show about a Nancy Grace clone getting her comeuppance. Is there anyway you can get that commercial as an extra for the DVD?

Gina's obviously too far along to do as much of the legwork as she was at what point did you figure out how to work around it, for the long term?

Unknown said...

I'm gonna add my kudos to all the others. Everyone has been doing a great job. Here's hoping for season 3!

I think my favorite part of the episode was Hardison and Eliot winding Parker up about the different conspiracies. They were just winding her up, right?

Unknown said...

Oh, BTW, tell the truth: Parker's "return to life" after she was hit by the car a was riff on Captain Jack Harkness. C'mon. You know I'm right...

Renfield and Sweeny Tood. Great stuff.

Anonymous said...

So Parker is "killed" right outside the studio and then gets up and walks away while everyone watches? And this miraculous recovery never gets back to Hunter? Hmmm....

SueN. said...

re: Eliot and the moon landings.

I thought it was pretty clear he was just yanking Parker's chain about them not being real. For instance, when he's telling her about having seen the "sets" and she asks why they didn't tear them down, he hesitates a moment, as if thinking, then gives the Mars answer.

And, yes, this ep was great, already one of my favorites. Sophie creeping out Nate, Eliot feeding Parker conspiracy theories AND getting a bit of payback at the computer with Hardison, and Hardison in a fro and with that hinky eye … epic!

Y'all srsly rock!

OhShinyTomato said...

LOVED this episode. Everyone playing everyone else's roles was very amusing. Sophie needs to not run cons "Nate's way" though, she did better when she ran the little part of the Second David when she did it HER way. And god, the Parker and Eliot interaction and him saying he wasn't at liberty to discuss stuff with her... EPIC. She was so confused lol

So... I have a question (for once). How is it that all of the characters can act as well as they do? Most people have difficulties acting, especially under stressful situations. And even Parker, who at one point couldn't act to save her life... for being so socially inept and always bluntly honest, she seems to have progressed so far with lying/acting in such a short time. Granted, she's still not the best, but I just find it a little unrealistic that all of them can do it as well as they do.

Joe Helfrich said...

What, you couldn't have the government conspiracy be about death panels and internment camps? Your powers of prognostication are slipping...

Devinoch said...

Another great episode! This series just gets better and better. (And I especially liked how Eliot and Hardison are STILL a little pissed about blowing up the office.)

The briefing scenes are fantastic, and if they're competence porn, well, so be it, I like seeing smart people who know what they're talking about.

My question is: Are we going to find out where Eliot got these cooking skills from one day? I mean, seriously, the hitter is a highly trained... chef? Awesome but... random? There's GOT to be a story behind it. (Or did he really just get a bug from the Wedding Job that he's never been able to stop scratching?)

sjrSpike said...

Best ep so far, this season -- but Eliot and Hardison got it wrong: Area 51 is where the moon landing was filmed. That's why it's so restricted. ;-)

Loved the Eliot as Dexter scene, and Eliot skulking around getting 'caught' tailing Parker, and Eliot is obviously still working with Parker, she handled the run-over-by-a-car scene wonderfully.

General question -- Nate is Nate, Eliot is Eliot, Sophie is Sophie, Parker is Parker -- so why is Alec Hardison? They all call each other by first name, except Hardison.

Video Beagle said...

So...are their Leverage novels or comics in the works? I ask cuz DeCandido is up there at top of the column sucking up. :D

(For those who don't know Keith, he's one of the best media-novel writers out there, perfectly capturing characters from Buffy to Firefly to Trek and Farscape...he's also the co-writer of the Farscape comics).

I find I don't mind not seeing the "on next week's show" bit...makes the show itself more of a surprise.

I too LOL at the "Destiny reveal".

Something that ocured to me.. the pilot made "we're funding this with an alternate revenue stream" was gonna be a reoccurring phrase...yet it didn't. Does the team still play the market to make the money to keep them funded and keep the toys coming in?

And again, the show needs some beagles..maybe a basset, too.

Calla said...

Tonight, Parker got hit by a car! Was that Beth herself tumbling over the hood? If not, did she want to or did she try to do it?

Also, thank you for another great episode. I love how it's not the same con-formula each week; the twists and turns are unexpected and fresh. And I love that you are giving us character development and back story, little by little each week.

Anonymous said...

I loved this episode. I enjoyed the twist of adapting to a fear mongering reporter. Plus the change in roles was interesting. Let the characters see how the others see them. :D

It was so nice to see a TV show to hammer a greedy, ratting grabbing reporter. I wish this would happen to the majority of the newscasters in today’s media. Too often they just want to run any story in order to get ratings. People did we really need days of constant Michael Jackson’s death coverage. NO! It deserved a 20 minute spot at best.

sjrSpike said...

Forgot to say that I also refuse to watch Dark, moody, broody Blue, just to see the Leverage preview. As someone else said, the target audience for the two shows couldn't be more different, and if I wanted a buzz-kill of my Leverage high, I'm sure I could find more productive ways to get one than DB. Please, tell TNT that the blackmail tactics are backfiring and making Leverage fans angry, not gaining new fans for the Downer Blue show.

Was BNI supposed to be a cable/satellite channel or something else? Hunter's retort that was was on "in 41 markets" seemed odd for a cable operation. Oh, and somebody tell Hunter that the Emergency Broadcast System was dismantled in 1997 in favor of the Emergency Alert System. (I know that you guys know that, of course, but she needs to be brought up to speed.)

Walter R. said...

@SueN No, Hardison didn't just have a 'fro, it was a ratty, frizzy, dusty 'fro. Perfect. I thought the setup was improbable and some of the gags were a bit thin (she walked into the closet, really?), but it was still LOL Hilarious with a capital Aych.

Next time Elliot or Hardison gets to lead! There's no way that could go wrong, Right?

BTW: Good lookin' cast all around but does anybody else find Parker to be adorably cute, in an elfin sort of way? Her expressions alone can crack me up.

Devinoch said...

@Walter R.: Parker is ADORABLE, in a cute, cuddly yet massively scary kind of way. If you watch "How I Met Your Mother," I can tell you that Parker is the very DEFINITION of the line on which the Hot/Crazy scale is divided... ridiculously hot, ridiculously scary. It's kind of impressive, really. She's above the "Vickie Mendoza Diagonal" but remember the first thing Nate says about Parker. "Parker's insane." But hot! It's all good.

Continuing in my habit of asking questions not about the episode, or even the season - I know that the awesome punk song from Twelve Step Job is one that was made specifically for that episode (but great job - it sounded very authentic to me).

But I want to have it now! How might I go about this? Also, are there more? If so, gimme!

Thought the episode was excellent! I have 2 questions:(1) Was the reference to Area 51 & Area 52 an intentional play on the containers in "Homecoming?" (2) Is there a good site to see what the viewer numbers per episode are?

Liz said...

The opening scene with Monica Hunter just absolutely made my skin crawl. First time an intro to our target just seriously disturbed me. Maybe because the scenario is so REAL...

Last night, we hear about terrorists being put in underground bases near our homes. This morning on the local news, I hear the government is checking out prisons near Detroit to house Guantanamo prisoners. How do you guys DO that?

Aldis Hodge was absolutely hysterical in this episode. Too, too good. And orange soda in a wine glass was cool.

The actress who played Monica Hunter did a great job, too.

Loved Eliot messing around with Parker (and everyone else eventually joining in).

But I especially liked seeing how Sophie's arc is going, and the conversation between she and Nate at the end was quite touching.

Thanks everyone. Had a great time watching as usual!

I don't have a question. I just want to comment on the fact that this show gets better each week. Please pass on to the crew, cast, writers and Mr. Devlin a hearty thanks for a show that I, my family and friends enjoy immensely.

So, this episode has its roots in "Seven Days in May" and "Condor" but my boyfriend and I, both of whom work in politics, wanted to know how much of the latter half of the Hunter story was influenced by Glen Beck?

Though Hunter is obviously a stand in for Nancy Grace, once the bunker/poison story took off, we both found ourselves pointing and laughing, shouting "FEMA Internment Camp" at various points before dissolving into laughter.

msd said...

Excellent episode! Very funny and with the addition of the Nancy Grace commercial I thought I was going to split a rib laughing!

As for the previews buried in "Dark Blue" - this isn't the only time TNT does this. Any of their 9/8c shows get the same treatment - if you watch "The Closer" you have to watch "Raising the Bar" to see the previews. I tried to send TNT my thoughts on this and this is what I found:

How can I contact TNT?
The easiest way is to send us an email by clicking the "Request Support" tab above. (BTW - there is NO "Request Support" tab!!!) I think I'm going to drop the dime and call them.

Love this blog, Rogers - even if you aren't getting enough sleep. Also, the commentaries on the DVD are excellent!

Brian S said...

Haven't read the other comments yet, so please forgive me if this has already been hit, but whose idea was it to run a commercial featuring Nancy Grace during the first break? Genius!

SueN. said...

@Walter R., true, the simple word "'fro" does not do nearly adequate justice to Hardison's masterpiece of hair enhancement.

Which now makes me wonder … is that super-fro something *he* had on hand, or (*shudder*) is it something Nate, Sophie or (God forbid) Eliot had in their bag of tricks?

I gotta go wash out my brain …

Not specifically on this episode, but if Nate worked art fraud for IYS, how did he end up chasing Hardison? Did Nate work computer fraud or did Alec steal some art?

I found the Gitmo prisoners living in underground bunkers ironic seeing as they are considering actually housing them in a maximum security prison in Saline, MI that is otherwise scheduled to close soon. The debate is Gitmo terrorist prisoners or violent gang member prisoners from California.

Terrific episode. Each week is my new favorite of the season. And last week, I was planning to ask if we would see the team take on another female mark, so thanks for being at least one step ahead of me on that count.

My question for the week: the cons seem to be moving further away from "stealing stuff" and closer to mind control (Order-23 and this one, though the Tap-Out Job had hints of it as well). While I love this direction, I'm wondering if this season will bring us just a straight up stealing-lots-of-money-from-somebody episode?

PhantomMinuet said...

To date, I have not seen a preview for any Leverage episode this season due to my refusal to watch Dark Blue.

Same here.

I tried very hard to see if there was a picture of Tim Hutton from "Taps" or "The General's Daughter" among the photos in the general's office scene, because I can't believe you guys wouldn't go for such an obvious in-joke, but I didn't find one. Did I just miss it?

G said...

Glenn Beck! I'd wondered who else saw some of him in Monica Hunter (the actress was fantastic, by the way).

Anyway, no questions. Just wanted to say that I've been a Leverage fan from the beginning, but that watching last night was even better given that I got to watch with someone who hadn't seen the show before. The comments about the Moon Landing hoax had him chuckling, and by the time Hardison and Hunter climbed over the fence into the army base he was laughing right out loud.

You guys are the best. Thanks for taking the time to do this blog!

Jocelyn said...

Hi, new-ish fan of the show. I caught up on the first season thanks to netflix.

Anyway, loved last night's episode. Watching Sophie be the one in charge was fun especially when Nate asked if he was that scary during a con and everybody said yes.

Hardison as a crazy conspiracy believer was awesome. Kudos to you Aldis Hodge.

I do have a question, have the writers ever considered pairing Sophie and Eliot during a con? As like a fake couple maybe?

Bates said...

Please tell Beth Broderick that she did a killer job. Not only with the self-absorbed narcissism; her increasingly unhinged behavior was funny and believable. Not an easy trick to pull off.

I also liked the stock report anchor's "breaking news" of the on air meltdown. With a quirk of expression and posture, that hint of gloating, we saw the next Hunter in the making.

So, got me to thinking: Many shows get good actors, but they don't always bring that extra something that really clicks with what you're going for (cue the fun train...). With Leverage, you consistently have talented folks who get it. How much of your casting process is the standard casting director/auditions/etc. versus approaching a particular actor? (Or, for that matter, even creating a role from the get-go with someone specific in mind?)

gwangung said...

Well, one data point, several friends of mine auditioned for an upcoming show. The writers liked one actor so much that they wrote a handful of lines and created a new character for her.

Now, it may end up on the editing floor, but she doesn't care; she got to spend a day with Timothy Hutton and Jeri Ryan....

Jay said...

I don't know; this episode felt rushed and forced in some places.

As someone pointed out, Parker getting up after being run over by a car doesn't make it back to Hunter? Nate is able to just drive out of an Army base that has already had one security breach?

I can chalk it up to the "fun train", but one thing about this show is that those kinds of "missed details" have actually been a setup or worked out in the team's favor (like Nate getting busted in The Tap-Out Job). I expected Parker's miracle recovery from the car accident to play into the blow-off.

The strong points of this episode, though, were the laying of groundwork for Nate and Sophie to figure out where their relationship stands now. Aldis Hodge playing the tinfoil hat was cracking me up almost as much as Hardison and Elliot raking Parker over the coals with the conspiracy theories. (Or WERE THEY???)

And John, you totally win for getting "Project Destiny" into an episode of Leverage. I suppose the bunkers were reinforced with unobtainium...?

Yeah. She has that fragility (and hotness) that makes you want to protect her---while at the same time being capable of savaging you in the most sensitive spot while having "TROUBLE!" written all over her.

I spent the bulk of the episode distracted. I rushed home from play rehearsal and managed to walk in and put the TV just in time for the first scene, but missed the bulk of the credits. As a result, i spent the ENTIRE episode trying to place Beth Broderick. I know i'd seen her in something, her voice is very distinctive and I'm good at placing voices. But for the life of me, i couldn't do it. Gah! Still, damn fine job on her part.
Loved the conspiracy stuff. Made me flash back to Dan Ackroyd's character in "Sneakers."
The whole scene in the newsroom where Ms. Hunter was starting to decompensate, made me think of a similar scene in the movie "Flesh and Blood."
Barbed wire. Ow!
One thing i've noticed in watching "Burn Notice" is that Sam Axe seems to be using the "Charles Finley" identity over and over. On purpose i have to assume, in order to create a number of conflicting stories connected to that alias. Any chance that someone on the team (Alex) will do something (Alex) like that? (Alex)
Also, I keep wishing for something to happen that causes Alex Hardison to reach out to a small army of hackers out there... Maybe using the aformentioned alias. say...."Luther Stickel"?

Whenever i play a hacker character in a game, i usually try to work in a variation of the following speech.
"Sure...I may be a twitchy, overweight geek with a case of Aspergers and a lovelife that can be measured in geologic time...But in there. *Points at computer* I am Batman, El Cid and Kung fu Jesus all wrapped up into one."
Wouldn't mind seeing more of that from Hardison.

And speaking of speeches, kudos on Hunter's "Evil speech of Evil" coming right at the turn. Extra point s for the 3rd person reference.

Entertaining episode. One question: Why was Nate wearing a black-and-white urban camo uniform (which isn't worn by the Army) when all the other soldiers were actually wearing the correct uniforms? Was this meant to add to the "black ops" conspiracy theme, or was this just the only uniform you could find in Portland?

Proper uniform look here: http://www.army.com/acus/acu1.jpg

Also, for future reference, soldiers do not salute each other indoors.

Those details aside, thank you for the respect that you have shown for soldiers and veterans on the show so far. It is much appreciated.

Firstly, thanks for making such an awesomely entertaining show - it's one of my favorites. I also appreciate this blog, so thank you for that as well!

I thought that Beth Broderick did a really great job at making her character arc believable - she didn't seem like a caricature, she seemed like a real (egocentric) person who went completely off the deep end due to manipulation. Which leads me to my question:

Do you think there will ever be a plotline where the "bad guy" will come back because they now feel like a victim? Maybe try to re-con someone that the Leverage team helped or get the team themselves back? In some cases the bad guys end up going to jail for eternity, or know exactly why they got conned, but in a case like this she might not even realize why they messed with her. And being so egocentric, I could see her feeling victimized rather than appropriately schooled.

Just curious if a scenario like that might ever come into play or if you're trying to resist those types of callbacks and continuity headaches.

Ann and Carlos hit my sore spots - why the black t-shirt/woodland camo on Hutton when you had soldiers in proper ACUs? And for goodness sake, you could have at least trimmed his hair on the back of his neck. The one thing with the beret (which he wore horribly) is that everyone in the Army is getting much closer hair cuts to wear them. In honor of his performance in "Taps," would have been nice to see him a bit more strac.

I take it you couldn't get in the REAL pentagon, nice if implasible story with the 3-star who "worked 8 years" on his project. Not sure any military person stays more than 3-4 yrs tops on a particular project. But it was amusing.

Keith R.A. DeCandido said...

Here's what I wrote on my own blog, which I repeat here in the interests of laziness:

Leverage continues to rock my socks. I was especially glad to see a con go wrong, not because they were made or because they screwed up or something like that, but because the con worked too well and the mark went crazier than expected with it.

And I liked the switching up of roles, continuing the theme of integrating the team better from the first-season finale. I especially liked that Sophie ran the con and they didn't go for either of the obvious extreme choices: that she would be better at it than Nate or that she'd be completely incompetent at it. Instead, she was good at it, made a couple of mistakes, but nothing major, and overall comported herself quite well.

And Eliot snarking Hardison about being stuck in the wind while a smartass sits at a laptop had me rolling.....

Something I didn't say on my blog, but wish to ask here -- was it or was it not the height of irony that there was a commercial for TNT's new lawyer show that included a plug for Nancy Grace's show and new book (a bit of synergy I honestly didn't get at all, since I'm unaware of the connection between a CNN talking head and a Bochco lawyer show) during an episode of Leverage in which the bad guy bears a more-than-passing resemblance to Ms. Grace? Or am I reading too much into it?

Keith R.A. DeCandido said...

Shoulda read the other comments, as everyone else mentioned the Grace promo. Snerk and snortle....

This was, hands down, my favourite episode of the season to date. Fave scene - Hunter frantically flipping through the red file at the end only to see pages of "All work and no play etc". That one scene had me laughing so hard, I had to pause the episode until I'd recovered.

Beth Broderick was wonderful and I second the question about whether she really climbed the fence. She seems the sort of trouper who would!

Loved Sophie and Nate's interplay all through the episode and the scene at the end was just beautiful and so well played.

Aldis Hodge can make me laugh without saying a word some eps - this was one of them. I'm willing to be he had waaaaay too much with the whole wig 'n' wacky speech routine.

I have a question about Parker and not just relating to this ep. The Parker we have now is not the Parker of the pilot or even parts of the first season. She's lost some of that edge - are we going to see more of the crazy daredevil soon?

Terrific episode, I really can't sing its praises enough. Thank you!

Can I cheat and ask a question for the Top Hat Job? In the previews, is that an Eliot injury, or a Christian Kane injury?

I personally HATE fanfic so I was wondering.....

1)How do YOU feel about fan fiction?

2)Does it irk you that so many people "borrow" your characters and use them in their own crappy stories?

3)Do you think of fanfic as a form of flattery?

4)Do the other writers and the actors feel the same way?

of this season so far, I think this was my favourite episode. Loved all the conspiracy-nut stuff, also had to think of Dan Akroyds character in Sneakers, like somebody else mentioned.

the one "aargh NO" I had was right at the beginning when the daughter rushes into the garage to safe her father from poisoning himself on CO and she CLOSES THE DOOR BEHIND HERSELF? WTF?

anyway, loved it.

Okay, after re-watching i do have a question.

There was a brief overhead shot used when Eliot told Parker he couldn't discuss the council. Until the tap out job that angle was used to show them separating. In the tap out job it was used to show then becoming a team, following each other after a disagreement.

I cant see the point of this shot though. Does it have any significance, or do i need a life?

Melissa Alexander said...

For those of you trying to place Beth Broderick, she played one of Melissa Joan Hart's aunts in "Sabrina, the Teenage Witch" (or whatever it was called).

The Nancy Grace ad: The down side of watching these things on Streaming Nexflix? You miss a whole level of irony.

I'm really loving the way everyone is picking up on each others skill-sets.
Only thing is soon, you're going to have everyone so good at everyone else's job, you're going to have to up the bad guys into the realm of super villainy just to keep the suspense up.
On the plus side you could talk to Joss Whedon about a "Dr. Horrible" crossover. Seriously, Nate and the team vs. Bad Horse and the League of Evil? GEEKAGASM!
Great, I turn 44 in two months and I just typed "Geekagasm" on an internet comment board. What does that say about me?

Word verification definition "Heista": A very festive nap.

This isn't really a question about the story of the ep, but about a recurring sort of... theme that I've noticed throughout the eps. Eliot's hair. In the first sequence of the sitdown plan meeting, I see salon curls. I totally dig Kane's long hair, but it just doesn't seem like it's Eliot's thing to try and have better hair than...well...anyone. Was this a conscious choice on anyone's part or did you just let the hairdresser do whatever he/she wanted and ran with it?

Joana said...

Oh bugger, I meant ".. it DOESN't seem like it's Eliot's thing... ". I hate it how I skip important words, gr.

Your points are very well taken! That being said... I also hate to derail any fun train and add a good dose of Timothy Hutton worship & I'm good! Chugga Chugga Whoo Whoo!!!

The growing friendship between Eliot, Hardison, and Parker is one of my favorite parts about this show. I love the way it’s been developing in the background – Eliot and Hardison plying Parker with conspiracies, the fact that they’ve clearly been teaching each other their skills, Hardison and Eliot’s bickering, etc. Obviously, the relationship between Nate and Sophie has been foregrounded for much of the series, and has gotten a lot more focus and screentime than any other relationship. Will there ever be an episode or plot arc that puts more significant focus on the (non-romantic) relationships between the other three?

@SueN LOL! No, you must have missed the "Nate and the Pips Job" episode. They ALL have 'fro wigs!

It took me awhile to recall where I'd seen (and enjoyed) Beth Broderick. She was Delilah on "The Five Mrs Buchanans".

The group once before used each others skills at the end of last season (someone else will have to supply the episode name) to get out of trouble so it made sense that they were actively cross-training so they wouldn't be caught unprepared again.

Can't wait to see what they do next week.

babysmoke said...

That's probably the First David Job that you're referring to. Where Sophie thinks like Parker and Nate channels Hardison, with Eliot doing the geeky thing with the remote access.

First off, kudos on a fantasic show. Also on reading all these comments that we send you. I gave up on reading them all this time.

1st question)
I might just be outta the loop coz I'm on a different continent, but am I missing something with 'The Council'? Does it actually mean anything or am I getting all paranoid about missing something that's not there?

2nd question)
Christian Kane mentioned on his twitter something about a scene with a bathtub on the ep? Yet again, did I miss something or did it get ditched?

Last kudos to Aldis Hodge, I found out today that he's only a year older than me, which makes him about 10 years younger than the rest of the cast. I remember seeing him kill Sam as supa-strong Jake on the Season 2 pen-ultimate episode of Supernatural... Awesome awesome work...

To be fair, I (as a Canadian) with no ID and in Civvies got onto an American Military Base overseas by just sitting in the backseat of a car and looking innocent with a group of 4 people with IDs - twice in two days. So I'm believing that in uniform with an ID - Nate could pull it off.

Well, one data point, several friends of mine auditioned for an upcoming show. The writers liked one actor so much that they wrote a handful of lines and created a new character for her.

Very cool. That's why it came to mind -- I get the sense it's not uncommon for the Leverage gang; just wondering how much it factors into the larger process.

(As a fan of the collaborative process, it's something I particularly groove on about the show.)

Unknown said...

Loved the episodes, kudos to all! I admit I was looking for TAPS pictures when we saw the general's office.

The end scene with Nate and Sophie was beautiful.

Different sort of questions: How does Emmy nomination work? Is the show eligible with a split season? Do you as the creators and production team decide to send in material for consideration or does the network?

I'd love for the show to get some awards exposure so show off it awesomeness.

Anna said...

Hardison's comment during his interrogation by Abbott? Brilliantly funny. I laughed for a minute straight. Thank you for that.

I was quite upset Elliot didn't get to beat anyone up this week. Hacking - cool. Kicking some butt - infinitely cooler. (I'm sick that way).

Yes on competence porn!

This is an odd, random question, but I was wondering about Parker's dating/sex life -- it doesn't seem as if she's had a serious boyfriend, as emotional attachments are probably hard for her, but she's probably not still a virgin. Random hookups, maybe?

Also, Parker is possibly my favorite TV character ever...I was convinced to watch the show by my friend, who said "There's a crazy girl who stabs people with forks." Which is true and AWESOME. So thanks for that, and kudos to Beth Riesgraf for her great portrayal.

Jocelyn said...

I'm sure this question has been asked but: Does Eliot really require the use of glasses? (And in turn does Christian as well?) Or are they just something he uses to help build a type of character for a con?

Tim as a General just never worked for me. He looked right enough, but the voice seemed too artificial and unconvincing.

It was such a relief when he talked like a normal person at the end.

I don't have a DVR right now, so I can't rewind and rewatch to be sure, but I think that there was a mention of "stars and bars" when Sophie was coaching Nate on how to get onto the Army base with a stolen ID. If that was actually the line, then why "stars and bars" instead of "stars and stripes"? Here in the South, the stars and bars are the rebel flag. Maybe there's a military meaning that I'm not familiar with. Or Sophie is British and doesn't know the difference. Or I got the whole quote wrong. Whatever the case may be, I love this show muchly. Thanks!!

I hope you don't mind but this is a question about the sneak peek for the Top Hat job - Eliot's holding an ice pack to what looks like a real injury on his elbow... What on earth did Christian manage to do to himself this time?!

What? Dont blame me for my warped mind, i was raised on a steady diet of true crime stories. There ain't nothing so warped as people.

Anonymous said...

@Leslie

Stars and bars isn't referring to the flag, but the fact that you have stars as a rank for being a general, you'll hear them referred to as things like four star general. Bars indicate lower ranks, but also I believe could be a reference to the pins that they use for medals on their uniforms. I'm not in the military, but know some people who are, so you pick up slang.

@Becky

I LOVED THIS EPISODE!

That being said... Will we see anyone else try to run a con in the future? I think it was be so funny to see Parker try to run one.

Also, The way it ended was just awesome. I like seeing the gang just hanging out and acting like a real family. Kinda pulls it all together.

Unknown said...

Just want to say, the first few episodes didn't really feel the group dynamic working, but for this episode, it all came together beautifully!

Well done and a big thank you for everyone involved!

Question: Did y'all purposefully dress Parker up like Corky Sherwood-Forrest from Murphy Brown?

p.s. Aldis has awesome crazy-eyes ability. It's not everyone who can pull that off.

briddie said...

Regarding the 'competence porn'; will they go back to an 'office' setting? It's just not as sexy sitting around Nate's living room. Or are you focusing on the family dynamic instead?

Mary Sue said...

Another question! Sorry, hit send too soon-- y'all gonna con someone in PDX or are we just too sweet, good, and gosh-darned hippie-patchouli wholesome?

Codger said...

It's been commented above, but wanted to emphasize it more. It really took me out of the moment to see Nate impersonating a US general but NOT WEARING a US uniform. That was neither the current ACU or the old Woodland Camo.

I'm willing to handwave the non-military hair, just so you don't have to wait four months for it to grow back out. I can even forgive the bombastic Patton-esque manner of speech (the movie, not the real Patton, since he actually had a high-pitched squeeky voice) because Nate (not Hutton) is a scenery-chewing ham in his cons.

But the uniform would have been so easy to get right.

Denita said...

Wonderful episode! The entire cast was excellent and so was Beth Broderick. I don't have any questions that haven't been posed by others but I did want to say that this episode pretty much answered the last few questions I did ask.

Also wanted to leave appreciation for these posts of yours. I find them very nearly as awesome as Leverage itself.

jill said...

Oh, the Nancy Grace question has already been asked (finally watching on DVR - I had just said to my husband, "Oh, man - they're spoofing Nancy Grace), but man that was funny. Also the "fall from grace" comment.

Visually, brilliant matching of Parker's "journalist" costumes to Nancy Grace-er- I mean "Monica Hunter's".

I completely believed the getting onto the base bravado scam. My uncle was in the Navy and I remember once visiting. He was a captain at that point, and I drove on base with my aunt. My uncle's rank insignia was on the windshield of the car, and when we drove in, the guards at the gate snapped to attention and my aunt commented, "They're saluting the car."

By the same token, a childhood friend of mine was on a nuclear sub. His mom got onto base basically by saying in her usual sunny way, "Haloo - I'm here to see my son Rob!" When she finally drove up to the sub, he was notified that she was outside, and came above saying, "Mom. You could have gotten shot."

Aussie Ash said...

@catchester

Thanks for clearing that up. Was really confused. Plus things keep getting referenced that don't actually appear in the ep....

Anonymous said...

Great episode! Two questions..

Did Eliot teach Parker how to fake getting hit by a car? I remember he got himself hit in the juror job too.

Also, will Hardison ever get to beat someone up? Aldis is a hunk, let him use those muscles! ;)

Raligh said...

Ditto to all the comments about loving this episode to pieces. Not that I didn't enjoy the others, but there was a little something extra to this one.

So, selling fear, stealing a man’s reputation ... is Season Two going to be about “metaphysical Leverage” after all?

And, if so, does this mean that we mistakenly inferred everything on the “Sneak Peak” to be factious, when it is in fact true? Is it only a matter of time before we see a robot sidekick join the team, zombie alien babies, and of course, Eliot fighting a bear?

(Actually “Zombie Alien Babies” would be a great name for a rock band - possibly in the Season Three music industry episode, don’t you think?)

Where did Parker get the outfits she wore during this con? (Which looked fabulous on her, by the way) Were they Sophie’s (either her own clothing or con costumes) - Or does the team acquire suitable wardrobes for whatever con(s) they may be running at one time or another?

Also, is Parker just getting significantly better at acting/interacting with people, or was this her intentionally acting like Sophie? Just as Sophie was intentionally acting like Nate at times, and Eliot was (mockingly) acting like Hardison while hacking.

Stefan Jones said...

Good middle-rank episode. The problem of over-eager muckraking journalists doesn't loom large in my radar, but it was a nice changing-on-fly con and a good comeuppance.

(If you are going after journalists, how about a corporate-friendly blowhard like John "change the facts to fit my beliefs" Stossel?)

I was left with this impression: The Leverage team had better take care not to appear on TV or in print or go anywhere near a military base in the future. If their pictures were taken on that base you can imagine their images being put in a "dangerous people to watch for" database.

Fanfiction... whether it's good or bad... is a sign of an interested and engaged fandom.

But I have to admit I often wonder if the actors, writers or producers ever read any of it and, if so, what they think of it. Does the "slash" stuff creep them out, or do they separate themselves from their characters enough to just find it amusing?
