LEVERAGE: No Justice, No Peace

Running late again. Consider this your open thread/bitch session for the very fun "The Juror #6 Job" written by our writers' assistant Rebecca Kirsch. We'll tackle the questions from this and "The 12 Step Job" together in a mega-post later in the week, setting up the two-part season finale.

First off, I want to say that this was one of the most fun episodes of the season. Engaging, entertaining, tight, with each team member except Parker) contributing based on their talents. And Parker, being forced to stretch outside her comfort zone was a blast. Beth Riesgraf really nailed her performance, walking that tightrope between caricature and real person.

But...

Alright, I realize you guys have some sort of product placement deal with DirecTV and that's great. I haven't found the couple of references this season to be obnoxious; they fit right in.

But...

Trial on a Sunday?

Couldn't it have been one of the *other* sports packages the boys were watching so it could have reasonably been a weekday? ;)

More of my thoughts in my review here. And, thanks to Jonathan Frakes taking the time to do some promotion, my interview with him here.

Do these placements really work? I mean, is there anybody who's saying "Aldis Hodge uses an off-the-shelf HP, that's a good enough endorsement for me!"

Srsly?

Hey all! Just saw a video called "Anatomy of a Fight", a behind the scenes peek at the staging of a fight scene for Leverage. And I was wondering, what episode is this fight scene in? Have I missed it? Or is it coming up?

That's actually one of the few things about Alec that rings geekily false to me. If he uses standard model of anything, it would be a Toshiba, since they're physically damn near indestructable. Far more likely is that he built his own and has it set up to triple-boot Linux, Hackintosh, and the Windows 7 Beta. (Vista? Please!)

I do understand that it's whoever was willing to provide the computers, especially after watching Rodney McKay use the same model Dell Inspiron that I had.

Speaking of the brilliant but irascible astrophysicist...how awesome would it be to see Joe Flanigan, Jason Momoa, Rachel Luttrell or David Hewlett on Leverage? I can just see Joe as the bad guy...

That would be in part 1 of the two part finale.

Thanks much, P.A.!

Not sure if anyone here was a "Jericho" fan, but I think the other actor in that scene used to play Mitchell in season one of that show. If so, he cleans up nicely. :-D

How many Star Trek people do you have on on tap?!! I half expecting to see Kaito Nakamura show up as the CEO of one of the pharmaceutical companies.

Unknown said...

Well Rogers, I have to say yall have done something good, you have my wife hooked.

Wondering if this is setting up a future nemesis for the team? Loved the chess piece and reaction at the end. The bit at the end with Aldis seemed like a little wink at The Pretender. Maybe that was just me.

BooM said...

I love that someone "tivo'd" the Vikings game! Again. Is there a Vikings fan on the show, or is it just splendid serendipity?

Anonymous said...

Loved this episode.

I've got one question though-

Does Christian do all of his own stunts (like bouncing off the hood of a car or getting punched) or does he have a double?

Unknown said...

Now I liked this episode for a whole lotta different reasons; 1) geeked out on the Trek folk, 2) pharmaceutical companies deserve to get nailed, 3) Eliot got to beat someone down, 4) Ford got his smug face time, and 5) surprises by Hardison and Parker, awesomely so.

Very cool episode, in-between being excited for the season finale, I'm even more excited for next season, once it comes, too. But, that could be due to the Leverage gang reminding me of a lot of my PCs; by the way, you so should have had Parker say, "Oh, I'm a halfling rogue" when Sophie said they were gonna role-play. ;)

Tara O'Shea said...

Hardison and Parker are, like, OFFICIALLY my favourites. This was brain candy in so the best way. And I loved Eliot in the tag, pointing out to Parker that she made a friend. Also, the bit with the beer in act I totally broke me. (What can I say? I'm easy.)

Anonymous said...

Yay! Parker has a friend.

As far as the Star Trek casting, I assume that's mostly an effect of having Frakes direct? (Not, of course, that the geeks that run the show mind, of course)

I liked Brent Spiner here. I think it's finally been long enough that I can watch a TNG actor in a role and not automatically think "OMG that's Data!".

Anonymous said...

Loved the ep! Was great when Eliot was in the dumpster & threw the garbage bag at Hardison.. These just keep getting better each week! the only problem I have with the show is that we are going to have to wait till later this year to get into season 2... Keep up the good work!

Anonymous said...

Love it! I think my favorite bit was Nate and Sophie standing at the door to hand the kids, uh, the team their briefcase/lunch. That was a moment of sheer beauty ;)

My question is a little difficult to phrase...

At the end, we know that Alec switched the video, so the bad guys thought they'd already won the jury over, but I wondered how the real jury deliberation went.

Did Parker actually have to convince someone or persaude the jury to vote the right way? Alec's speech was great, of course, but it just seemed that learning how to persuade someone was the missing thing at the end to tie up Parker's character arc in the episode.

But that's really a small thing in an episode that I enjoyed so much!

Anonymous said...

So...you put Data and Quark in the same episode? Christ, Rogers. Are you trying to give the trekkies a endorphin induced stroke?
If you want to cover all the geek bases, you should find a way to get David Tennant and Nathan Fillion in an episode. That could cause the internet to overload and burn out.

But yeah, killer ep. Digging the way the team continues to gel together. And yeah, I'm all for bringing back Lauren Holly as a big bad for next season. (Her character would definitely want to hurt Nate in the worst possible way. And she would have the smarts to match him step for step,)

Looking forward to the two parter.

You know, I DID have work to do last night!

I said - ok, I'll just watch the first few minutes, but that plan went gang aglay quickly.

Good episode. Only minor quibble, which I think the sneak peaks for next week address. Parker is a master thief. She needs to use these skills. All she did last night was some straight pickpocketing, better and quicker than Nathan lifting Brent Spinner's cell phone, but in the same complexity class.

I'd love to see more Alexander Mundy from Parker. She is socially maladjusted, but she's uber-adjusted when she does the one thing she is good, no great, at. She should be doing thefts, not of wristwatches, but of things that no one else could get within a million miles of. Again, it looks like the season finale takes her there - my comments are directed more towards season two.

So - now I have to work twice as much tonight! Rooogggggggerssss!

Zifnab said...

I'm honestly wondering when we'll start seeing recurring villains or multi-episode plot arcs.

That said, random Star Trek cameo characters are always a win. If you can lure Patrick Stewart onto the set for something, my head will explode.

Anonymous said...

I've officially fallen in love with Parker. Her last two storylines (Parker the mental patient and Parker the juror) have been a blast to watch. Looks like next week will be just as good, albeit less with the funny. (And that blue dress she's in next week... man. I want screencaps.)

Carolyn said...

I really enjoyed this episode. The trial on a Sunday thing popped out at me, but I will let suspension of disbelief gloss over that one.

I convinced a friend to watch it last night (hoping for another convert), and so was watching this episode more carefully, trying to imagine what her impressions would be. I saw The Bank Shot Job first, and was hooked. I'm hoping she's hooked, too.

One dimension of the show which I had a hard time explaining in advance is WHY these (now independently wealthy) people would continue to do risky and potentially dangerous jobs. What do they get out of it? What is the thread which holds them together? Nate is a good leader, and I buy that they would let him guide them through a job. It was obvious why they sought revenge in the first ep, but it's not so obvious what is driving them now. Why did Eliot agree to go to the warehouse with Parker when he really wanted to drink beer and watch football? Why were Hardison and Eliot digging through trash? Are their senses of morality that strong? If so, why were they "bad guys" to begin with? Nate's motivation is clear, Sophie want to be with Nate, so her motivation can be drawn from that. Why are the "kids" still there, though?

(AWESOME scene with Nate and Sophie seeing everyone out the door last night... awesome! Oh, since Rogers is from Boston... wicked awesome!)

I don't need an anvil of exposition dropped on my head, and I like that their backstories are mysterious. That said, there's got to be some subtle way to explain why they're each risking jail time and/or bodily harm -- beyond just having fun.

Anyone else know what I'm trying to say?

Anonymous said...

Loved the episode. Parker is a fantastic, complex character & I'm enjoying getting to know her. I thought the apple/orange scene was awesome. She efficiently completed her assignment while totally missing the point, and it was funny. Great writing!

The only bit that felt a little false to me was Nate (& the rest minus Parker) taking the victory lap & gloating in front of their foe. Seems like they'd want to keep a lower profile, especially since she didn't know for sure anyone caused her to lose.

Kai Tave said...

No, man, no. Get Avery Brooks.

He doesn't do it every episode, but Nate has a tendency to rub it in every now and then. He called up Dubenich for a little chat at the end of the pilot, and did the same after the Snow Job, he made a much more theatrical exit during the climax of the Stork Job than he needed to, etc. You know, I think he likes it.

lummox said...

I like Leverage very much, this episode was no exception. There is just one thing that bothers me: the fight scenes. Every time there is a fight scene (usually Elliot beating someone up) the camera shoots the action from a very close range and moves around wildly, making the scene very confusing and hard to follow. If you could maybe move the camera further away in the future a make it more steady, so that we could better see what's happening, that would be great.

Other than that Leverage is a really cool show.

Kate said...

Lovely lovely! Really, it was a great episode. And I'm fanwanking the Trial on a Sunday up to Tivo. ;) Mostly because I just love the way Christian Kane says "muh beer!"

And I have one that tops all other Star Trek suggestions. Get Wheaton, and I can die happy.

Also, wanted to say to Becky up there, who asked: "Does Christian do all of his own stunts (like bouncing off the hood of a car or getting punched) or does he have a double?"

He probably does a fair bit of them. The man is EXCELLENT at stunt work. Track down his movie Secondhand Lions, and watch the 100th episode of Angel for more kickassery from Kane. Also, if you watch carefully, you can often pick out where the director has decided to 'show off' that he's doing it. For instance, the roll away from the car outside the bar in "Twelve Step Job", you can clearly see Christian's face. Same in Mile High Job when he takes the tumble over the suitcase. Keep an eye out for it and you can catch him doing his own stuff a lot. It's cool. He's done a lot of action work, and is apparently indestructible.

Right, Rogers. Keep up the fantastic work, and somebody should totally get on this Fandom Convention thing. I want Q&A's with the cast!! Okay, really I just want a photo op with Beth. *shamefaced* I'll tell Creation. ;)

My apologies if this has been asked and answered, but will the season end with a cliffhanger? Or will the cliffhanger be between parts 1 and 2 of the finale?

Patrick said...

What I really liked about this episode was at the beginning, right after Parker came back from Jury Day 1. I was sure this was going to be the kind of episode where only after a couple of acts do the other characters realize, "Hmm, maybe she was right, after all."

And then, in the *very same scene*, you have them check out Parker's hunch. Awesome.

So, when are you going to get Marina Sirtis to play Gina Bellman's mother?

lac said...

I had a question about the 12-Step Job: Why did Parker stop taking the happy pills? Impairment of thief skills (though she got the gun just fine)? Aversion to "doing drugs"? I was just curious since they seemed to help her.

Unknown said...

so, just to count, we now have cameo-wishes for:
Patrick Stewart
Avery Brooks
Wil Wheaton
Marina Sirtis (what .. really?)
and of course my own wish,
Peter Jurasik

I guess I also second the one for Avery Brooks.

aren't we a bunch of hopeless nerds.

As long as we are lining up desired cameo appearances, i have to vote for seeing Chiwetel Ejiofor (ideally, alongside Nathan Fillon), possibly in drag. Last seen by most geeks as The Operative in Serenity, by some as Lola in Kinky Boots, and by at least one or two in Redbelt.
The man is made entirely of Awesome.

One problem with the ep; I really disliked the speech Nathan gave Hardison about how if he really tried, he could do anything, become a lawyer, surgeon, etc.

Um, the man's a worldclass computer hacker and electronics whiz (not the same thing) and is expert in multiple computer areas.

It came across as really condescending to tell a worldclass expert in multiple difficult and practical fields that if he really, really, tried, he might actually be able to make something of himself one day.

Yes, I know Nathan was trying to build up his confidence in an area he's not an expert in, but it could've been written as "You were able to pull yourself up and become expert in these fields; you've got the chops to be able to do it in another one" and come across better.

Yeah, well you notice that Hardison immediately started poking fun at him because of it.

Anonymous said...

"Um, the man's a worldclass computer hacker"

It's also something to point out that a lot of computer hackers also tend to be rather expert social engineers. The ability to convince people that they know you well enough to be trusted in a very short time is a fast way to get passwords or other security information.

I've always been a little surprised that aspect hasn't been played up more for Harrison's character.

How can any Trek cameo request list be complete without Jeffrey Combs?

After playing Weyoun, Brunk, Penk, Suldok, and Shran on the various Treks, seems like he's a natural for at least one role.

I'll also third the request for Avery Brooks. He seems to have retired after DS9, though.

Stellar Drift said...

Well that was fun.

You don't tell us how much was Rebecca Kirsch and how much was polish, but this was fun, hope she brings the fun next time she gets called to the table (and a little repeated exposition).

While amusing at the start, I felt the ending fizzled a bit with an emotional stumble. Would have preferred a less gloating ending, perhaps all driving into the sunset with a smile on their faces while Mrs. NCIS was getting the bad news in court.

Also, while you could argue most of it depends on luck, i felt it was a bit too much "luck" that Hardison won.

But fun, Riesgraf is good - even though that "I put a razorblade" felt a bit like an outtake *g*

Now the inblog bickering *g*

recurring villains

Oh I hope not.

Don't really think this show needs that, except in as much as the character development.

Love love loved this episode. So much fun!

Especially wanted to say thank you for the scenes with Sophie and Parker - I always love it when the girls get screentime together. They are complete opposites in the way they approach the world, and that makes it all the more interesting and rewarding when they connect. (Or fail to connect - the razor blade scene was total genius!)

I also thought Lauren Holly was a fantastic evil mastermind, would enjoy seeing her pop back up again. After all, she just got her ass handed to her by our team. Not sure how you'd work it into the format of the show, but our guys are pissing powerful people off left and right - it's not a stretch to think someone is going to turn around and hit back at them.

My top three Trek alumns I'd like to see guesting: Levar Burton, Marina Sirtis (oh hell yes please), and, oh god this would be sweet, George Takei (please please pretty please?)

gwangung said...

Plus let me put another vote for Patrick Stewart and Marina Sirtis cameo.

A few thoughts:

The victory Lap:
That's not so much about plot as it is about Hommage. That's a lift from Mission Impossible (Which, let's face it, this series borrows from as well.) Besides there's something viscerally satisfying about seeing someone's face as you watch the burn sink in. On some occasions, i could see why certain members of the team might relish it, even though they are independently wealthy.

They do it for the jazz. And for each of them there is something that gets to them. With Nathan and with Parker, it's almost always kids. Sophie has a thing about trust, especially bound up with romance. With Elliot, it usually connects to something in his past. And with Hardison, Well...Hardison and Parker share that thing where it's not interesting unless it's damn near impossible.

Ah well. only two more to go. and then a stretch without. I will be sad.

Laci said...

I love how you switched it up on how they got their mission. Nice to see that you can change gears to still engage the audience.... and a good way to break up the client always seek them out kind of thing. I like how Parker is growing as a character... especially with her social issues, talking about the kid that looked like a dog was priceless, because we have all been there before. We just have a filter to stop us from saying anything like that.

briddie said...

Why they keep doing it? Well, in Mile High, Hardison almost didn't - he was busy gaming. But these cons have such a high thrill factor, why not keep doing it?

The show keeps getting better and better, which is great except for the withdrawal pains coming up really soon now. When will the DVD be released???

Anonymous said...

Just a note to say that Gina was extraordinary this episode - to me she makes the whole thing look effortless.

Love the Parker storyline and agree with the discomfort of the closing (rubbing it in).

Avery Brooks rocks!

You may not know, but when would DVDs come out? And when would second season start?

I adored this episode, this is definitely in my top three of the season.

You answered my question last week about why they stayed with Nate and you said the next couple of eps would look at how that team is forming. So you can imagine the squee from my spot on the sofa when the ep opened with the argument about Parker. Nate was almost unbearably smug this episode, needing Sophie to ground him. Hardison's insecurity was sweet. There was also some sustained grouchiness from Elliot who seems to be getting the crappy jobs and is fed up of it. I look forward to seeing how you convincingly bind these individuals together.

Adored the ST cameos, second all the suggestions for other cameos. Marina Sirtis as Sophie's mum would be hilarious, not least because there's what, 10 years between the two actresses? Yet I think it'd work well :)

Have to say again, loved, loved, LOVED this episode. And many kudos to Beth Reisgraf for another beautifully naunced performance :)

To all those who keep suggesting Marina Sirtis as Sophie's mom...how about Sirtis as her sister and Majel Barrett as their mother?

Re: social engineering and hacking. They're really two different things. In general, I think techno hackers like Hardison look down on those who mostly "hack" via social engineering rather than via understanding the system and finding its holes and weak points. There are folk who do both, but in general those who mostly do social engineering are a lot less techy.

And I'm speaking as someone whose once-ranked-by-Wired-as-the-7th-greatest-MIT-hack-ever relied heavily on social engineering. The two key bits were convincing Harvard Stadium guards that the MIT Marching Band plus extras in dark blue sweatshirts and white pants was the Yale Precision Marching Band, and then convincing 1,174 Harvard alumni and company that the placards we were passing out to them would spell out "Beat Yale" went held up, rather than the actual "MIT".

OK, I have to ask: In the scene where we get the first good look at The Warehouse (where Spiner comes in), did my eyes deceive me or did I see an old Doctor Who credit sequence running on one of the monitors? At the very least, I saw "tunneling" graphics and latched onto that...

Gina Bellman, Born 1966.
Marina Sirtis, Born 1955.

I am not saying the actresses could not do it (I am certain they both could), I just do not want to be the one to suggest it.

Or, rather than a family member, what about Marina as the woman who took Sophie under her wing and showed her how to play the game back when Sophie was a baby thief just starting out in the world? I would pay good money to see that.

Show's great. Love the little nerd shoutouts to Doctor Who and Warcraft and etc. Glad you guys got renewed, because the show is a riot.

(as far as the DVD features go - a pop-up or textual commentary track would be great; "Ghostbusters" and "Buckaroo Banzai" did these well - it's basically production notes, trivia, pointing out funny things in the background, all that sort of nonsense.)

I love Parker-centric episodes. This one was great. I love how Sophie was trying to teach her how to interact with the human race. I have to say, I wish those two had more screen time together. You don't give the femslashers enough to work with, you know. Shame, shame. Well, barely enough I should say, I can take the smallest thing and turn it into something femslashy haha. And you gave the slashers heaven in 12 step with Hardison and Eliot. I expect undertones of femslash in the second season! ROFL. I'm jealous of the slashers right now, dude.

The razor blade comment made me spit out my soda onto my laptop screen, by the way. Thanks for that xD

I have to say I didn't like Eliots comment about "Dude, theres gonna be NORMAL PEOPLE there." I mean hey, if she wasn't in the room where she could hear him that'd be one thing, but I found it rude that blatantly expressed how screwed up he thinks Parker really is in front of her. Like THATS gonna help her any *scoffs*

You guys get me far too into this show. lmao. I get all offended by other characters remarks towards another character. I'm crazy xD

I find it funny how everyone is recognizing Armin Shimerman from Star Trek. I'm not a Trekkie so I didn't, but I personally recognized him from Buffy The Vampire Slayer LOL. I was like OMG PRINCIPAL SNYDER! And being on the terrorist list for being a drunken obnoxious horny bastard... wicked ace.

Rebecca Kirsch totally wins. This was one of our favorite episodes. You wouldn't hear me complaining at all if she became one of your standard writers.

One thing we loved about it is that it shows Sophie having a relationship with people other than Nate -- and it's a relationship that doesn't rely on nagging and disapproval for a change. Everyone is at the top of their game, and that's fun to see.
