This is Geek Level Nine, but damn. Thanks to Phillylist, I find this, and I gotta say -- wow. Just ... wow. Star Wars Episodes 4-6 re-examined in context of 1-3, and much like the legendary recut of Episode 1, this guy's take on the Star Wars mythos is AU's more satisfying, particularly from a screenwriter's standpoint.
Anyone who can convincingly argue R2-D2 is the mastermind of the Rebellion is aces in my book. Nicely done, Keith.
Although it does miss a point at the end of Ep IV, by not realizing that Han's claim of, "Of course I came back, I couldn't let you take all the credit," was just bluster. Chewie really convinced him to do it.
ReplyDeleteWow, that was... impressive. The funny thing is, all of that is completely believable. I doubt that's what Lucas had in mind, but he has me convinced.
ReplyDeleteNnhhh...I'd be happier with the rest of this interpretation if it didn't involve the radical reworking of R2 as not merely an active protagonist but a prime mover in the rebellion -- making "impassioned speeches" (that's just too cutesy for words!) and policy recommendations to Bail Organa, no less. This seems to be stretching the conceit a little too far. Keith's scenario would work just as well with only a slight modification to the droid's role: make him the perfect "humble servant" who does not make speeches or give orders, but remains a keen observer of all that goes on around him, and manages to position himself wherever he can be most effective.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, this reading of Chewbacca goes a long way to correcting some egregious flaws in character logic produced by his appearance in Episode 6. And I agree with John Seavey's point above that Chewie convincing Han to return makes a lot more sense as well.
I personally find this to be a satisfying re-examination of Star Wars. Especially for those who enjoy the works of one Mr. Bacca and D2.

ReplyDeleteIt always seemed to me that Lucas really wanted the droids to be the heroes of Episode IV, but realized no one would be able to empathize with them, so created Luke. Luke is our embodiement in the movie... wouldn't it be cool to play with lightsabers... I want to be Luke!
I mean, from a Hero's Journey perspective... R2 and C3PO hit more of the steps, and they make more sense, in terms of overall story than Luke's.
And don't forget the objectives... R2's objective is to get the plans to the Rebellion. He does this, and Act 2 ends. The complication arises that spins into Act 3 with the fact that the Empire follows them to the Rebel base.
Luke's objective is to become a Jedi Knight like his father... which never happens in the first movie. His objective is left incomplete. It doesn't seem incomplete with a little hand waving and the ambiguous nature of what a Jedi Knight really is. Imagine a King Arthur story, in which a squire said he wanted to be a Knight like his father and the story ended without him being knighted... Star Wars does this... and it still works.

ReplyDeleteVery clever. Unfortunately, it's about as plausible as an essay I read on, I think, Space.com circa 2000. "Jar-Jar: Secret Jedi" or words to that effect. Jar-Jar's foolishness was an act, see, and he would soon learn to use the Force. Jar-Jar's role would expand, and in the end, he would fulfill his mythological function and spirit the secret twins to safety.
