New Doctor Who

Feh, you cranky bastards. It was damn fine. I can forgive its flaws for the fine Tom Baker heart thudding away in its chest.

You obviously saw a different episode to the one I saw.

But was that New Who on SciFi or New Who on the BBC? Either way, "Dalek" was quite good, and "New Earth" didn't cause me to want to do brain surgery on myself with a spork despite its flaws (never go into a Russell Daies episode expecting a sensible plot; go for the characters.)

I liked it a lot, although there seems to be a distinct sign of backlash brewing here in the UK - undeserved in my opinion.

I think Russell (sorry, Mr. Davies, I don't know him personally) occasionally makes the odd miscalculation, usually with his humour - in this case the overuse of the word chav, which is everywhere right now over here, but which I doubt will be so current millenia in the future. (That would be like me using the term bobbysoxer now.) But you can forgive those moments for his overall boundless enthusiasm for the show and his characters.

And hmm, does anyone else think the "3rd time" the Doctor and the Face of Boe meet will be in any way related to the series finale?

I loved the Doctor's parting line with the face of Boe. Made me laugh.

I'm liking Tennant as the Doctor so far; he owned the brief part of The Christmas Invasion he was conscious for.

how in the...can you watch it there?

Ah, the wonders of the internet.

Was it the best episode of New Who? No.
Was it rollicking good fun? Absolutely.

And perfectly judged to send children scurrying back terrified to hide behind their cushions, sofas, and/or parents, which is where the little buggers belong.

I actually think that the original post sums it up pretty well--it wasn't the best episode of the new series, I kinda suspect that next week's episode will blow it out of the water (kung-fu monks and werewolves!), but it kept me happy while I was watching it, that's for dang sure.

And I've heard, though I can't verify any kind of authenticity of the source, that the 3rd meeting is something that actually won't be picked up on until season three.

Shouldn't that be "...the two fine Tom Baker hearts thudding away in its chest"?

Just a little...Time Lord humor...there...

Holy crap, am I a geek.

Since I'm just watching the first season on Sci Fi this thread has confused the crap out of me. "Dalek" was the last episode to air here. So far its been entertaining, but not quite as "sci-fi-ey" as I thought the old Dr. Who used to be.

Oh and the costumes of some of the "aliens" so far have just been shitty in my opinion. In particular the family group planning on irradiating the planet through nuclear war.

Still, its as fun as the old stuff used to be which is a definite plus. I just wish it would get a little more hardcore in the sci fi department. The next episode involving the "fourth human empire", from the preview, looks like it might be quite good though.

Damn I'll miss the Daleks. One of my favorite episodes from the white afro era Doctor was the one with the planet that had been at war for hundreds of years due to the influence of the Daleks. Or am I thinking of 2 different episodes, oh well its been 20 years since I saw it.

I've been really enjoying the new series, all the Dalek episodes are good. (Even though my husband teases me for my childhood fear of them....*shudders*)

*Yes grew up on classic Tom Baker as the Dr.

As far as the 'new' 'new' DR, (is that the 9th or 10th now?) Someone pointed out how the Harry Potter fanfiction writers are probably going to have a field day...since the same actor was Barty Crouch in the 4th movie.

I really don't have any complaints on the series so far, I've really loved the unique twists and spins each episode has taken. :)

Yeah, we're talkng about the new season, which started airing in the UK on Saturday.

IIRC, SciFi had a chance to run the Christopher Eccelston season of Doctor Who when it first aired, but passed on it for some reason.

Hence, most of us got to watch that season through the magic of teh Interweb, and are doing so with the new season as well.

I can't find anything on when SciFi plans to air the new season. I hope they don't wait too long...

I was lucky enough to have friends who got me copies of the Eccleston season in .avi format. Overall, a great load of fun, with some smart and nuanced stuff. Like the episode about the lady alien gangster.

What Daniel Said: "The Empty Child" and its conclusion were a wonderful combination of drama, Sci-Fi, and horror.

I wasn't super-keen on the last episode. Good, but a little strained.

Orac said...

I just finished downloading the torrent for the first episode of the new season last night; I'll burn a DVD tonight and watch it over the weekend.

I can't wait.

If you listen to the commentary for this episode (available on the BBC website), it explains (although doesn't excuse) many of its faults. Many rewrites and filming problems that never seemed to end made "New Earth" a nightmare to put together. There are scenes where literally every shot was filmed several weeks apart from every other shot in the scene. Originally, there was NOT supposed to be a third meeting with the Face of Boe, but when the show was renewed for a third season that reveal was delayed.

Similarly, originally there was going to be many more deaths at the end of the episode (if you catch my meaning) but after a jibe from Steven Moffat about how Davies really likes to kill everyone, Davies rewrote it to have them survive. Of course, in doing so, he made the episode seem like a pale, non-sensical imitation of Steven Moffat's episode "The Doctor Dances".

They went into this episode with far more ideas than they could fit in, had to cut half of it and change the other half, and the resulting patchwork has many, many fridge logic problems.

I do think, however, that people are generally quite unfairly negative towards RTD's writing skills. He did write, after all, last season's two-part finale and the Christmas Invasion. Boom Town is a far better episode than people give it credit. His fault seems to be (a) he's stretched a bit thin, and (b) he's simply more entertained by some of the goofier aspects of Doctor Who than those who prefer a more serious tone. He knows what works and has done an outstanding job in guiding the overall series, but he needs a harsher editor to help focus his own writing.

Did you notice the big, faded "Bad Wolf" on the pavement at the very start?

Anonymous said...

Jay in Oregon,

Okay, I'm still confused. Anywho, it seems to me that we still have a ways to go on Sci Fi with season one, I think we're only 6 episodes in so far, with the 7th to air this weekend. So buy new season you really mean season 3 I think ... which would be a long way away. Or is the one sci fi is airing actually season 2?

So I take it that Season 3 has a new actor as the Doctor?

And the Daleks aren't really dead?

As for "Bad Wolf", I noticed a kid tagged the Tardis with it ... any other significance to the moniker?

Aluvius's post reminds me that there's a lot of spoiler potential in discussions like this.

I suggest TUNING OUT if you haven't seen all of the Eccleston season. (Which is Season One of the new Who Epoch.)

I probably should too. My connection for DIvX copies hasn't come through with season two yet.

SciFi is currently airing the first new season of Doctor Who, with Christopher Eccleston as the Doctor. This season was available, um, "unofficially" over the internet as it was airing in the UK.

The BBC is running the second new season, with David Tennant as the Doctor. (The changeover happens primarily during The Christmas Invasion; I'll avoid saying any more to avoid spoiling what few plot elements haven't been ruined in this thread.) These episodes are also similarly available over the internet.

Yes, the words "Bad Wolf" have a significance in the Eccleston season. You'll find out what soon enough. :)

And I cannot confirm or deny any allegations that the "Dalek" episode is the last time we see Daleks in this season. (I mean, the Doctor is a time traveler, for crying out loud!)

Pretty much what Mr. Underwood said about RTD: he can do characters really, really well. Plots? Um, not so much. God knows, I don't come to Doctor Who for Pournelle/Niven/Varley-style hard SF, but even a children's show should try to abstain from plot holes that would make a 9-year-old raise her eyebrows. Still, "New Earth" was better than I'd feared given the grumbling.

Then again, I thought "The Christmas Invasion" was awful, and I am apparently the only person on earth with this opinion, so what do I know?

Anonymous said...

Ahh okay so in the UK they are only on season 2. For some reason I thought they were up to season 3.

I don't really mind spoilers heh, well as long as I have time to forget about them :)

Speaking of Pournelle, I have resolved to not seek out info on my favorite writers personal/political views (present company excluded heh). Some of the stuff on his website is interesting, namely the tech/science stuff ... the political stuff, yikes. I had to quit reading it after the Katrina tragedy. Alot of folks over the age of 50 just ooze unconscious racism from their pores.

Gods, I feel as though I've been watching some DR Who different from everybody else. My husband and I are cringing half the time at the bad dialogue, the bad plot holes, the bad quality of the shooting. The only thing we're enjoying at all is the acting.

I'm only struggling through it since I enjoyed the old episodes growing up and I have a lot of people who have opinions I respect telling me it's so gods-damned great.

Bleagh.

People in the UK, please at least tell me it gets better?

I thought New Earth was really enjoyable. Not the best but a lot of fun. It is deffinitely stronger than the season 1 opening, Rose.

Doctor Who always works best for me when he shows his enemies as much compassion as his friends. And I love his final act to the horrible woman.

I think that's a fair bit more like the old Who most of us romanticize (athough Terry Nation could certainly as hell bang out a story). They could step up a bit on the shooting, but I appreciate the funky physical situations they're dealing with. I'm looking forward to some of the guest writers they;re bringin in this year -- having worked a few rooms, they need some plot geek to drive themm a little harder thisyea,r nad let TD do the "emo", ans the Buffy writers call it.

The back half of the season is far superior to the first half. That said, there are still some thuddingly bad moments mixed in with bits of writing that every writer I know who's seen it still quote with sheer joy. The Christmas Special, which I just rewatched, is the perfect example of that. That first half is rough, but Rose running her bluff is a fine bit of work, as is the incredibly clever push-in/reveal of Tennant's reawakening.

Tooth and Claw really hit the mark for me. The plot was coherent and the ending didn't feel tacked on or rushed. My only criticism is that it should have been a multi part story; I really miss the cliffhangers of the earlier Doctor Who. A build up episode revealing the monster a little at a time could have made the monster a real scare before it hunts the characters. Still my favourite off all the new Doctor Who stories though.

Anonymous said...

First, for those who've seen "Tooth and Claw", are those actual Shaolin monks, or just wannabe's? And man I cannot wait to see it, those werewolves kicked the ass of poor old Moony (Prisoner of Azkaban), even in the little clips I saw from the teaser.

As for Eccleston's Dr., I still miss him, I loved his tortured, angsty, thoroughly vulnerable and yet remarkably resiliant nature. And oh lord how I miss him, Rose and my beloved Captain Jack trading flirty quips. For those who are still watching the SciFi aired eps, you'll soon be introduced to the glory that is the good captain. I envy you that.

So last season we had "Bad Wolf" and it looks like this season it's the Face of Bo and Torchwood, both of which I can't wait to get the reveal on. If it pays off half as well as Bad Wolf did I'll be quite pleased.

Acccording to the BBC Web site (bbc.co.uk/doctorwho), the monks are played by a local kickboxing team.

Was i being blind when watchin episode 2? I watched it for the Shaolin monks, but I didnt see them. Obviously they were on there, but i didnt seem them at all. Mind you i was drunk. But I was kinda gutted i didnt see them, i will have 2 try and find a rerun of that episode sumwhere. Iv bn punched by at least 2 of the Monks...fun fun, it hurt!
