Half-steps are fine

Yes, yes, I know, if I were truly wired, I'd have a PC/media center tied directly to the flatscreen in my living room. But that's not how the decor fo the living room plays out -- and in the meantime, the $80 RITECH Chinese we-don't-need-no-stinkin'-regions DVD player plays DivX and Mpeg4 files as data files straight off the DVD. Meaning I'm enjoying Doctor Who in damn fine quality on the old 32" Panasonic hardtop. Just the sound of that theme song fills me with unbridled glee.

My point? Sometimes, the half-step tech solve is what you need.

But can it download BitTorrents in the background? You know, of legally purchased material you misplaced or something.

sadly, no, that is the job of my computer in the other room. But a quick drop&drag onto the dics and voila

Again, admittedly a stopgap, but surprisingly efficient.

There is just something about that theme song... Watched a torrent of the unaired pilot episode from 1963 the other day, and my heart still skipped a beat when the titles started.

One of the buildings I used to work in was partly owned by the BBC and one day they cleared out a couple of floors. I got back from lunch to find a HUGE radio about the size of a small car 'parked' in the car park (from one of The Borrowers TV shows) and the elevator had two daleks in it. Most of my office spent the afternoon riding up and down with them and touching their nobbly bits.

Cool machine. My stopgap is a 25 foot cable and a video card that outputs to both my monitor and my tv. Then I don't even have to burn the DVD.

And, Dr. Who RULES!!!!!

I recommend the Philips DVP642 DivX-Certified Progressive-Scan DVD Player. Just a cheaper stopgap with more bells & whistles.
