Watching with my dad, he wanted to know, was the World Crime League a Buckaroo Bonzai reference or is it the same organization and they take place in the same universe?
Other than out of concern for the viewers, why didn't Flynn respond to the dragon in Latin?
I think this was the best of the ones to date -- running on all the metaphoric cylinders, as it were. I liked the conclave more than the artifact of the week; hopefully you do more like that. (The Library / Librarians as there to maintain the balance among the magical side allows for at least as much as artifact hunting, I should think.)
Did I hear a mention of Wold Newton? Is this by chance related to the stories of Philip Jose Farmer who has the majority of history literary characters being related to each other? If it is, what's the connection?
How do you mistake Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa for a pizza delivery guy? Especially when he's not even holding a pizza box! What is it with rogues using WIS as a dump stat and then never having a spot check?
BTW: Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa! Y'all get the coolest people.
1) Will we one day see some episodes of more of a sci-fi nature? After all, in some of the TV movies we saw stuff like UFOs and Nessie hanging out in the background of the Library.
2) Wait, so Du Lac just knows where the Librarians hang out? Why doesn't he just send all of men at it at once and take it like he tried to do with the Library itself? (Well, besides the fact that the show would be really short otherwise)
3) How fun was it coming up with all the ways sexy-evil Lindy Booth could weaponize math?
4) Was the opening scene in Japan specifically meant to homage Godzilla and other Kaiju films?
This was a fantastic episode! I loved that the apple never affected Ezekiel at all! My question is this... When are going to hear Jacob Stone's backstory? I am one of his Kaniacs, so all we do is try to get the word out that our guy is awesome! Along those lines, we love to see him shine in his work! With his backstory still to come, we are waiting with baited breath each week to hear his deepest secrets and then find out how you and the othe writers are going to ease the pain! Y'know, cause that's what we want to do for him. Anyway I'm sure I'll be able to hear your evil laughter and feel you vibe of delicious torture coming to all of us, but I hope you can tell me...
But I guess we know how the Library got the Holy Grail.
On a very odd Side Note I'm finding that Laroquette looks a little like the Picture of Old Nate.
But Dulaque's trying to restore Camelot isn't he? Return to the golden age of magic.
Enjoyed the reference to the Judas Chalice. Sad that after what happened Flynn cut himself off from people. Do you have any plans /desires to explore those years or are they all essentially timelocked whatever happened happend and it doesn't matter?
1. Really love the concept of Ezekiel already being the worst version of himself. I'm thinking this comes from the fact that of all of them, he is the only one that has accepted himself completely as he is? Which means he's slotted into the Chaotic Neutral alignment point.
2. Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa! Consider this my formal request for him to return in Season 2. Rogue dragon plotlines can be fun, yeah? I'm not being presumptive or optimistic. I think there just might be S2 after all these lovely ratings.
3. I like that Stone can work with everyone despite the fact that he doesn't really trust them. When does this bite him in the butt?
4. As the series goes, Baird's hair gets more relaxed as she gets comfortable, I think? It's a nice progression point to focus on.
5. Thank you for the very fun show and tons of giggles. And thank you for taking the time to answer all these questions!
1) I get the feeling that Eve Baird is smarter than she looks, in an Eliot Spencer kind of way - not that she looks unintelligent, just that she seems "normal" compared to all the super-geniuses. I hope to see more of her smarts as her character develops - surely her military training includes some serious expertise on tactics and strategy at the very least. 2) When is the Librarians RPG coming out? I suggest one based on the same rule set as the Leverage RPG. Also, let me know when you want to GM; I'll bring the Irish whiskey. 3) Are Jenkins and Dulaque fallen angels? 4) How much Irish whiskey does it take to fuel the creation of each episode of the Librarians? 5) I like that Ezekiel is the worst version of himself - and I hope he stays that way (mostly). 6) Something else about Irish whiskey.
Loved all the little references...World Crime League, Wold-Newton, etc. Wife was wondering why I was smiling and going "Yay!" through the entire episode.
Can we get a breakdown of who everyone was at the conclave? I mean besides those who were introduced?
All of us uber-nerds are delighted by the shoutouts to World Crime League and Wold Newton and O2STK... and really they make such perfect in-story sense for the Library. I'm already thinking of a crossover between the Librarians and the Middleman and Buckaroo Banzai; if I didn't have a rule about writing for free I'd be hip-deep in a giant fanfic right now. You are making all of us giddy at the Wold Newton Facebook group. Looking forward to hearing mentions of the Vishanti and the Parliament of Trees and the Kim Newman version of the Diogenes Club.
Previously, you'd mentioned that network execs don't want to appear goofy by airing shows that make them look goofy.
But, then how did the show "Galavant" ever get greenlit? That looks like the silliest thing since "Monty Python & The Holy Grail."
As for tonight's The Librarians... first, I have to say I love that each ep has its own title - very pulp.
With the success of Leverage and now The Librarians, why do you think there aren't more pulp shows like these on television? Is it that you and your people are the only ones clever enough to write a full series?
And, finally, I wanted to comment on Stone & Cassie's relationship. I like that it is NOT the same as Eliot & Parker - because it could have been. I like that Stone gets Cassie and helps her to focus and pays attention enough to know what her "off switch" is. BUT, at the end of the pilot, Stone tells Cassie that he likes her but doesn't trust her. So, I'm seeing each week evidence that he likes her, but I've not noticed any evidence that he still doesn't trust her. Is it simply that he knows more about her than she knows about him?
Whoops - one more question. Since Baird hadn't officially transferred from NATO to the Library, it made sense that, last week, she said "I don't belong here!" and that Flynn's desk rejected her rearrangement of its contents. But after signing the transfer papers, shouldn't the desk accept her now and let her set it up the way she wants? And what, if anything, does this have to do with your comment last week that "the desk is a clue"?
Really great episode! I loved the balance in that we saw the very best of Ezekiel last week when he was wearing Santa's hat and this week, it was the worst of the other characters. Nicely done!
Now a couple of questions:
1. If Flynn didn't know about the door working how could he have come through it at the beginning?
2. What did the team do with Lamia? Why didn't she follow them to the Library as she was with Eve at the time?
Son Of Ban...Lancelot, yes? So guessing from Arthurian legend and their relationship so far/alluding to betrayal(?), Jenkins would be Gawain? Does this mean the library was founded by Arthur/Merlin and the annex(es? are there more than one?) are guarded by the Round Table Knights?
The references to the Wold Newton bylaws and the World Crime League were fantastic! Some of us Wold Newton mythographers think we might heard the name "Lupin" as a part of the WCL reference. I'll replay the episode tonight to see if I can hear it.
I think it was very interesting that the gathering was called a "conclave." This is the term used for the gathering at Wold Newton in Dec 1795. Perhaps there is a secret history behind the secret history... a secret conclave within an already secret conclave, at which the Wold Newton bylaws were enacted. :-)
You use of worm hole doors solves a lot of transportation problems, like using valuable show time traveling and other special effect requirements. It's like Star Treks Transporter.
I would have thought that there would more use of magic items that are at their disposal - Too Warehouse 13?
The Librarian started all this, but there have been so many spin-offs that I hope you can stay true to your own track, whatever that is. I guess we shall see.
Are we going to see Eve have a Kung Fu training session for the team. I don't mind seeing everyone take turns fighting (not necessarily with fists) , big guns, explosives, knives, light sabers... well maybe not them...
Loved this episode. (Thinking of adding this line to my signature for every blog post)
Loved the episode! One of the best so far. I really appreciate there being more complexity to DuLaque and his story, and that you made me think about things like how one can even be completely sure whether they chose right.
I was wondering, who hid the Apple in the pearl? When Flynn showed up at the conclave as his "evil" self, Dulaque seemed to be surprised at him acting out of character, so it looked like his plan didn't involve saddling the Librarians with the apple. Was the apple there at the Vatican for a long time, quietly waiting for a victim?
I'm totally forgetting the title, but considering there's a magical group dedicated to fictional characters would that mean the Leverage crew could cross over into the Librarians world?
Loved the episode. Leverage was very important to me and I'm so happy to have you and Dean (plus other members of the Leverage family) creating more great television.
1. Did Kane actively petition to be this show's "Hardison", re: Stone's relationship with Cassie?
2. Were the different eye colors a conscious nod to Green Lantern or did it simply come about as a means of providing a visual cue to the audience when someone was "possessed" by the apple?
3. Flynn's clothes in the pilot were, in my humble opinion, quite similar to the clothes worn by the Tenth, Eleventh, and Eighth Doctors. The white suit this week reminded me of the Fifth Doctor. Any chance we'll see Flynn in a velvet opera cape, insanely long scarf, or question mark jumper before the season is over?
(Not really a question about the episode, but: Is it too soon to start looking for info about a potential DVD release of the first season?)
Will we find out more about Jenkins' and Dulaque's relationship before the season finale? I have my own theory as to who certain people are, so can't wait to find out how right or wrong I am.
First, thanks for continuing the blog. As was the case with Leverage, I stop in to learn more about the writing & production. And before I know it I'm off to search the Internet for more information about something you mentioned. With Leverage, it was crime and cons (I worry a little about what someone reviewing my search history might think). Now it's mythology and fantasy. Second, thanks for a show I can look forward to watching with my kids. That has been a hell of a lot of fun.
Right, questions: 1. Are there plans to do commentaries for the DVDs? Please? 2. You've mentioned this episode was shot 8th...are episodes airing in the order you intended, however?
Cassie's transformation when she was holding the apple seemed much darker than the other characters. Stone, Flynn and Baird all changed in ways that were bad, but made sense for each one - Stone's artistic snobbery, Flynn's desire to wield the Library's magical power rather than taking responsibility for it, Baird's will to make other people follow orders.
The worst possible version of Cassie seemed to have a desire to kill and cause widespread destruction for its own sake - which seemed quite a shift from her normal nature. If the changes are all dark reflections of the character's personality, what should we draw from this about Cassie?
She comes across as somewhat innocent, but twice now she's shown that she's not averse to changing the world for millions of people to suit her needs or desires.
I'm having a hard time "suspending my disbelief" that Stone would "crack heads" over differing opinions of interpretations of art, Flynn/Eve would take over the world, Cassandra would kill (as a byproduct) and Ezekiel basically would do no worst than what he is everyday? He must be a saint that gets up on the wrong side of the bed everyday. Just put me traffic and remove my inhibition and the results wouldn't be good (am I right?). Is this foreshadowing or purely comedy?
Is The Librarians going to be available on Netflix or hulu (it doesn't look to be streaming currently)? I'm going through the other comments but haven't seen it mentioned. Unfortunately TNT's website won't allow me to watch online because my service provider doesn't participate/support the online viewing or something.
I forgot to check in on here for Episode chats...Good to know it's here :)
I found this episode to be...not that great I'm afraid...too much on the comedy side than pulp adventure side. (I did see it after a friend who was sampling this episode as his first exposure was just railing on how he almost turned it off, so I pre-prejudiced...I've convinced him to check out the Santa ep which was great.).
(The final-ish scene with Laroquette and Frewer though was awesome, though.)
I do have a general question, I noticed at the end of the credits, a TNT logo and "Time Compressed". Are the extended iTunes episodes I heard about not-compressed, or is there additional material there?
I have a few questions (I hope you get to them), mostly Eve-related but I'll fire away, anyway.
1. Out of curiosity, is there a chance we'll get to know Eve's middle name this season?
2. Eve's "Come back alive, Librarian" recurred in this episode... It's their thing, right? But I do hope it's not a foreshadowing. I really took a liking to how her relationship with Flynn works and they're making the most out of their brand of normal.
3. Her hair seems to be more relaxed as the episodes go by (from the neat bun, now she's letting it free more often). Sort of her getting more acquainted with the whole "magic exists even if you don't know it" and in sync with her LITs?
Also, I just want to say I go into a serious fit of giggles whenever I remember that shot of Rebecca with the fairy tale tresses in next episode's preview. Unnerving but super cute.
I'm really loving this show and want to ask about Jacob and Cassandraare you setting up a romantic relationship there? Because I really love them and have since the Pilot and they have great scenes together always looking forward to them. Jacob is my favorite character I just like everything about him I just wish we would learn more about how he gained trust issues.
1. With the break-neck speed of development this show had, how much world-building/bible did you guys get down before writing (so you wouldn't cross important wires), and how much did you just wing? Having a formalized structure and established monster courts is a good gag, but it also drops some pretty big facts about the universe. Is that a, "This is how things work, and we're just hinting at the tip of the iceberg" decision or a "yeah that's great and we'll worry about elves in season 2"
2. Did the Western Dragons capture the Apple of Discord themselves (maybe during the Trojan War?), or was that a plant and part of Du Lac's plan?
3. Did the Roman Dragon have a name? If so, mind telling? (Also, nice on having the flame reflected in the eye-- that's a great detail!)
Best episode so far. I love that the preview implies that we're going to be seeing CGI dragons all over the place, but in the episode we get a guy in a business suit and a dragon's eye, AND IT'S NOT A LETDOWN!
Well done!
I've been a huge fan of Kane since his Angel days, have loved Wylie since the first episode of E.R., and think the whole regular cast is amazing, but Larroquette and Frewer are on a whole other level. I can't wait to see where their characters go. Getting the casting right seems to be your (and Devlin's) secret weapon.
The scene between Jenkins and DuLac in the end was very... intimate is probably the word I'd choose. John has hinted of a non-heteronormative character in the season finale which does make me wonder. The wording Jenkins used (and with these writers there are no mistakes in wording) "whatever we were" would (imho) if Jenkins were a woman be a non-so-subtle hint to sort of affair or being lovers. On the other hand, it's also a way to hide which relationship they have for the viewers a little while longer. Hmm...
Anyway, there is a lesser known character in the Arthurian mythos namned Galehaut that challenges Arthur for his realm and is basically only convinced to surrender by Lancelot, whom Galehaut seems very taken with (some scholars interpret this relationship as being lovers). There is a long and convoluted story, but Galehaut is also the person who convinces Guinivere to return Lancelots feelings and thereby (unintentionally, I think?) brings about the destruction of Camelot. Galehaut more or less gives up everything for Lancelot, but gets nothing in return. Not a perfect fit for Jenkins, but the element of homosexuality is fascinating.
The other interpretation could possibly be that they were at a point in time very close friends (knights?) which could make Jenkins Gawain who lost both his brothers and sons as a direct result of Lancelots affair with Guinivere. But the initimacy in that scene was almost palpable to me.
Or maybe the actors are just that good, and I'm reading way to much into it. :-)
Anyway, no question per se, just musing out loud. Although if I'm laughably far of you might spare me making a continued fool out of myself?
I love this show so much. I thought it was really great that Ezekiel is the worst version of himself. I love thief Ezekiel but I'm still excited to see his character development. First episode I was in love with the characters and excited because I can see that they have so much room for character development while still being awesome now. I love each of the characters. I have a few questions 1) are Jenkins and Dulaque brothers? I was getting the vibe that they were brothers, or at least they used to be good friends, especially at the end. 2) is Jake Stone going to learn to fight? I loved seeing Kane in Leverage and his fight scenes are great. 3) is the yellow rain coat that Flynn is wearing the same one that Hardison is wearing in the Miracle job? I just watched that episode a little bit ago and thought it looked familiar.
By the worst version, it may not be the mirror universe version of yourself (nobody got a goatee) but releasing all the times you've suppressed yourself, and let it out. Jake, hiding his art knowledge, has had to keep himself from correcting misstatements and mistakes. Cassandra has clearly been very repressed (why wasn't she rich from her abilities but instead cleaning floors and "the last time he was proud of me"). Flynn has had this incredible power and had to sacrifice for the greater good. Ezekiel doesn't seem to either deny himself much of what he wants or swallow what he wants to say.
And I apologize John, my mother raised me better than this.
Thank you so much for all the extra effort you put into answering all our questions! Know that we really, really appreciate it and I hope you had a merry christmas and some really nice Irish whisky to go with it. :-)
Another entertaining story! I'm loving another ride on the fun train.
Fun to see Cassandra use math for evil. I love mathematics (even though I don't understand a lot of it). It's always great to see smart people. I thought it was a bit sad, really that Ezekiel is the worst version of himself. Are there plans to redeem the character over the course of the series or is he the anti-hero?
Couple of series questions:
1. Will the DVD release be the extended versions of the episodes or the televised ones? (hoping for extended versions!)
2. When does TNT announce series renewals? I seem to remember they were usually late, April, maybe? The show seems to be getting great ratings from what I've been reading so I hope to see news on season two soon!
PS: watched The Long Way Down Job again tonight, and damn, that scene at the end still makes me teary. :)
The Librarians is filling a void for me, not left by Leverage, as I'm sure I'll be enjoying Nate's team for years to come. But as a kid, I enjoyed the Quantum Leap series, sure it was goofy, but the idea was catalystic. Now I'm looking forward to exotic locales, historical and mythical characters, discovering magic in the real world, right under our noses and solving the "problem" of how to keep it out of the wrong hands. That said, I'm throwing Scott Bakula's name into the hat of requested quest stars!
This is more of a procedural question, primarily about 101/102 and not this episode, but I just watched the extended cut on iTunes and this is the most recent posting.
POSSIBLE SPOILERS FOR 101/102 if you have not seen the extended version may follow:
While watching the extended versions on iTunes, I was taken aback by what was chosen to cut. I felt cheated; had you not mentioned extended cuts were on iTunes, I would have a different opinion on the main characters then I do now.
The conversations Jake had in the bar about his dad, Cassandra had with Jake about the last time her parents had been proud of her as being when she was 12, Baird had with Ezekial about his OTHER FBI file, and Ezekial's comment about why he is a thief provide layers of info about them and explain a bit about their personalities that were missing for me up until I saw that.
It's like Jake is obligated to work the family business, Ezekial may not only steal for fun and profit, and Cassie feels like an outcast in her own family. I didn't take any of that away on my TNT broadcast viewing.
To my questions, 1) who gets to decide what gets cut? 2)Is it some arbitrary number (you must cut 8 min) and you just try to remove what makes the most sense? 3) Does it happen at a higher level of production (where the decision what to cut is made) and you have to roll with it?
I'm still catching up, but I have a follow up question from the 101 answers, about using law books as set dressing.
Wouldn't the contents of a law book are public domain, wouldn't the specific printing of it be copyrighted? Like a specific printing of the bible, or a performance of a Mozart piece? Or are law books printed as as public domain objects, in and of themselves?
First, I apologize for being annoyingly pedantic about Cal... ;) Promise not to derail the fun train ever again.
Second, thank you SO much for keeping the post-game going! You truly are a prince among the showrunners. Series-related questions aside, I find those glimpses into the inner workings of a TV show, and TV in general, absolutely fascinating. Please, keep 'em coming!
Third: Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa!!! OMG, OMG, just YAY!
Two questions. One about the episode - the goodbye between DuLaque and Jenkins (plus Jenkins's obvious distress throughout the episode) seem to strongly hint at a previous romantic relationship. Good catch, or was I completely brainwashed by the Internet and see things that are not there?
Second question is about the fireaxe - it was emphasized quite a bit in promo photos/videos, to the point of becoming somewhat iconic. However, not a glimpse of it in the show itself. Should I look forward to the axe making an appearance - even a cameo would do - or was it just a prop for a prop's sake in the promos?
1. It would be nice to see a fleeing boy fall down for once.
2. Hopefully Stone will express an appreciation for classical music and even (gasp!) opera. (Hating on opera must be easy because everybody does it.)
3. Since I've actually visited Portland, I hope to see some familiar locations. Powell's is probably too hard to arrange, but the rose test garden is cool (Portland is the Rose City) and the Japanese garden is lovely.
As others have stated, thank you for doing the post-games. I enjoyed the Leverage ones, and look forward to The Librarians. Getting the background on the story itself and how a TV show is made is fascinating and I really appreciate your taking the time to read and respond.
Now on to my questions: 1) I did not totally understand how the Cassandra off switch worked. Once I had the CC on I was able to hear the Euler's number and look it up to try and understand it, but math...Was it a trip up because it was more complicated than Pi? Or did Stone know something else about it from what he read in her notebook/diary? Is this a private book so Cassandra is now annoyed that he reads it?
2) I did not know about the extended versions until reading about them here. Are they only available through online purchase? From a DVD release perspective could you release both? Personal preference but I like to have both the broadcast version and the extended cut and am disappointed when I can only own one.
3) Arthurian mythology seems like it may play a large role based on the guessing that's going on here. Any suggested background reading? Academic or otherwise. :)
Museums and galleries seem to bring out the worst in the LITs. I'd like to see them wreak havoc at the Tate Gallery, please. Turner AND Pre-Raphaelites! How can Stone resist?
No questions really, just ongoing enthusiasm. Thanks again.
Best episode yet! Thank you. I was thrilled when I saw John Larroquette and I am so happy you're giving him such an amazing character to play. AND ALL the best lines. So many writers would just see a cardboard-thin supporting role for someone in his position. Thank you for giving his character such depth and making him such a joy to watch! Looking forward to what comes next!
First, the ending made this my favorite episode so far, that last scene was amazing.
Depending on how you are adapting the myths into the Librarian-verse, I could see Jenkins as either Galehaut (as mentioned earlier) because of the conflicted and romantic relationship between the two, or as Galahad (giving us a complex parental relationship), with Galahad having brought the Grail to the Library. Also, Galahad had received the boon of being able to die at a time of his choosing, which would explain Jenkins still being around.
I loved the episode, an have been a fan for a very long time. I will watch/ read anything you come up with. The name Jenkins always makes me think Leroy Jenkins, and thinking that I must inquire -- was Jenkins the King?
1/A) Because this is a question, but I know you won't answer it, so it may as well be a comment. WHO IS JENKINS?
2) "Different eye colors for different vices" Nice touch. So was the worst version of each person built on their definitive sin or was the worst version playing off the most destructive possible version of each person? Because it seems the worst versions of Flynn, Cassandra, and Stone would have included some paralytic elements.
3) #weirdstuffyourshowrunnerknows should actually be #scarystuffyourshowrunnerknows. Do you ever scare the rest of the writer's room? Or do they just go 'cool!' when you start weaponizing math?
B) @Marquis My money's on Bedivere with a side bet on Gareth or Gaheris (assuming the Orkney bros aren't dead). Ooh.Or Ector de Maris, that would be cool, but he's probably not well known enough. I will be astonished if he's Gawain or Mordred. Percival...I could see Percival. Galahad would explain a lot of the reactions, but honestly, I can't see any version of Galahad turning into Jenkins. If he is Galahad, I would be extremely interested in hearing how that happened. Crap, I forgot about Galehaut. That's a really good bet.
4) Loved the Vlog! Did you very carefully pick the section of The Board with none of this season's episodes on it? Do we get to see Jenkins' poker night? Or should those of us desperately hoping the steampunk episode gets made send lots of fanmail to TNT begging them to give us a Season Two?
C) Russ Meyer? Seriously?
5) Do you guys have fun writing Flynn's perpetually preposterous, prolix prating? D)If you ever do a Shakespeare episode, I vote Flynn plays Polonius
Lindy Booth is AMAZING in this. My favorite single Cassandra Reacts to Things moment so far is probably "MRS. CLAUS IS REAL?" but brandishing that book when the Backdoor activated is a close second. Nice little echo, too, of similarly brandishing a rock during the fight at the end of Sword in the Stone.
And Evil Cassandra was just... my god. I'd been hoping from the start that we'd see her weaponize her powers like that at some point but did not dream it would happen so soon and so terrifyingly (and as Stick pointed out, Midnighter-esque).
It seemed obvious to me that, while DuLaque somehow managed to engineer the calling of the conclave, he had no idea that the Apple of Discord was inside the pearl. 1) Did Mr. Drake put it inside a pearl and, if so, why? (to make things between the dragons worse, just for the hell of it, or to try and mess with DuLaque's machinations?) 2) *Was* the pearl actually stolen (or moved by Mr. Drake) or was the entire "somebody stole the pearl" a story to get the intercession and conclave in motion? I suppose since Mr. Drake was a dragon (in a mansuit! he's a lawyer, remember?! HA!) and he couldn't lie, it must have been. But was the pearl that Stone picked up the actual pearl that was stolen, or a duplicate that Drake supplied?
3) Thank you for this show. Though it has cost me extra money - waiting 4 days for iTunes to get "The Apple of Dischord" (sic)caused me to request a refund (which I didn't exactly get) and a new subscription to Amazon's service. Maybe next year someone could remind those services that extra care during the holidays would be appreciated?
Great episode!! I adored getting to see everyone's dark side, which, consequently, made me super excited to see what's in store for Ezekiel. (He's my favey fave. :)) Alright, onto the questions:
1) It seemed like Cassandra's darkest side was "kill all the things!" I know that she said it was because she wanted to practically apply the theories constantly flying around her brain, but was there a little bit of revenge in there (like, the world never took me seriously so *there*!)? [Also, I was a huge fan to see her go *so* dark. I hope that we see it again and that it won't be so easily turned off--I'd love to see everyone try and deal with it.] 2. "Travel well" was a super odd phrase, especially since Jenkins makes it a point to stay in the Annex. Is it a hint re: what's to come (as in: are we going to see Jenkins having to make another one of those choices that he talked about)? And/or was it a jab at one of the last conversations that the pair had? 3. Can we get more Ezekiel/Jenkins? PLEASE? 4. At some point before this, you mentioned that there was a group of folks who was in charge of making the magical confines in which objects were/are held. Would they have any answers for Flynn and Co. re: the Library's whereabouts? More importantly, will we ever meet them? 5. During the Writer's Vlog for this episode, you briefly showed two of the boards. (The following assumes that they weren't meant to mislead.) The characters seemed to be on N-S and E-W continuums, with Baird being on the structured end and Ezekiel being the complete opposite. Since Stone and Cassandra are in the middle (with no real indication either way) are they the neutrals of the group? Or will we see them head in a certain direction?
There was a mark at the base of Jacob's right hand as he reached above his head for the pearl. Is this something that will be addressed in a later episode or does Christian actually have a tattoo there? I've been his fan for years but haven't noticed it before--could be I'm just not very observant.
I miss Leverage, but The Librarians is filling the void quite nicely. Thanks for bringing us such an enjoyable show.
It seemed a bit odd to have the season's big bad of Dulaque and Lamia appear in back to back episodes. I can only assume that this was due to TNT's habit of airing episodes out of the original intended order. I know they did it to Leverage and in some cases for me, it diminished the overall effect of the season arc. Does this ever annoy you? Has there ever been an instance where you just said no, you can't air that episode here? Is saying no even an option?
I've got to say that I'm really enjoying The Librarians. I was honestly afraid it would be a let down after Leverage, but that's not been the case so far. The 10 episode season is flying by! Any idea when we might expect to hear about a renewal?
Heh! Nice use of Skidmore Fountain! I'm guessing that was filmed really late at night.
I should make a habit of watching the show on Sunday so I can get questions in on a timely basis . . . but the crowd here is pretty sagacious and probably would anticipate 'em all anyway.
These days, when you -- producers & creators -- create and plan a show, do plans and rights for things like comics, novelizations, and RPGs get discussed right from the get-go?
Put another way, I'm wondering how important these media extensions are these days.
Hi John. Just a quick Thank you! Enjoying the series enormously, and now I've been pointed at this blog, I've been re-rewatching Leverage and reading your after episode reviews along with. So Much Reading!!! #NotaComplaintreally.
Few squee's and q's/
1. Kane as Stone in glasses, speaking different languages and being incredibly adorably geeky. MOAR please?! Also Stone's darkside was getting to totally ignore everyone else and indulge in his art geekery?!! Heeehehe
2. Stone and Cassie working together -how much of a strain will badCassie put on that friendship? 3. You once mentioned pondered that outing Stone as Gay and Artistic was "too many hats", so I offer two terms: Bisexual and/or Sapiosexual (One who finds intelligence the most sexually attractive feature). Bi would be far less of a gotcha as he can be attracted to men & women.
4. The conclave: Was it deliberate that some factions seemed to have a mineral/metallic representation, or just you sneaking in more RPG references? Drake - Eastern dragons - Jade and Pearl? Western Dragons - Gold? Dabra(sp?): City of Bronze - the Djinn Sililandria: Fae Legions - Silver ? Cú Chulainn of the Iron Kingdom African group? Guild of Fictional Entities World Crime League.
5. Tall women who's name/Faction was a bunch of consonants in a row - Blodeuwedd maybe, from the Welsh Tylwyth Teg Faction?
Also Susanna L - Very cool idea. That scene did just scream a massive amount of intimacy and was fascinating! Tho .. I tend to be careful of ascribing romantic intent to everything between two awesome characters, especially because in this case I would imagine that a thousand odd years would foster a *very* intense relationship, even between two people who where just friends, let alone possibly brothers in arms. Not to mention that the current western world, especially US cultures 20th/21st Century's depiction of what friendship should look between two men is kinda of ...stunted. Differing cultures, let alone time periods, would have *very* different levels of intimacy though of as normal. /rant
I also loved how much awesome badCassie was. Honestly, I can kinda relate. Being raised to be a good girl, be nice and sweet. Unable to function in the real world because your gift is crippling you and keeping you locked in your own head, unable to relate, at the same time it's killing you? Not to mention the whole, practical is way more fun that the theorectical? Oh Hell Yes! Cassie has a whole gut full of repressed rage at the world there.
Is this too late to make a comment? I guess I’ll find out.
Great episode! I loved the conclave with all its different members, and I hope the show gets lots and lots of seasons so you can explore all those different worlds. Thanks for doing these Q&As – they add a lot to the experience of watching the show.
Questions: 1.) This is sort of speculation more than a question, but here goes: I LOVED the scene between Du Lac and Jenkins. My guess: if Du Lac is Lancelot, then Jenkins has to be Gawain. Jenkins’ speech about complicated choices maps pretty well onto the tragic events surrounding the fall of Camelot – Gawain refusing to participate in an attack against Lancelot because of their friendship, Gawain’s brothers and sons getting killed in that attack, the resulting war. Could Du Lac’s line about “I had to try, or I would be the monster you think I am” be a reference to his attempted rescue of Guinevere (which led him into the fateful attack)? Are you going to say what the answer is or do we have to wait until the finale? (Bonus: Wikipedia says Gawain was “a friend to young knights,” a mentor and exemplar of knighthood in a lot of stories. Jenkins is totally becoming a reluctant friend and mentor to the LITs.)
2.) If the arrows were activated by sound, why didn’t they try being really, really quiet, instead of making lots of noise?
3.) It seems like with Flynn back, Eve didn’t get to do much Guarding. When she and Flynn were in a scene together it seemed like it was him doing most of the physical stuff (like stopping her from stepping into the arrows and running around drawing fire in the booby-trapped chamber). In an episode that was so much about her professional and personal relationship with Flynn and how he needs to not undermine her, shouldn’t she have gotten to do some of the day-saving? That said, I love their relationship overall – their chemistry, the apple possession scene, the way Flynn wanted to make it clear that he respected her as an equal at the end of the episode. And I guess sending Flynn back out to continue the search is an example of an element of the Guardian’s job. But more Eve derring-do would be nice.
4.) How did they get out of the dragon’s lair? They ask the dragon how to get out, he laughs, and then they’re out. Did I miss some implication of how that happened?
5.) What would happen if someone held the Apple of Discord while wearing Santa’s Hat?
Looking forward to fairy tales tonight! I love Eve in the previews shouting “WHY am I wearing HEELS!!!???”
Once again you guys, cast and crew, have created an amazing show! I had myself a Librarians marathon, caught more little details and LOL so many times! Trying to figure out the "clues" you have mentioned... 1) I am curious about the eye colour chosen for the cast...I think I read somewhere that they are important to who the characters are...is this true? 2a) The Serpent Brotherhood have tattoos to denote who they are...will The Librarians get something as well? ;) 2b) Do any of the cast have tattoos? and if so are they hard to keep covered? (for the integrity of the show of course ;) ) When Season 2 is announced, you start filming and need crowd "extras", look no further than the Kaniacs LOL It would be an honour ;) I have become more educated watching this series...constantly looking up info and sharing with my kids! Thank you In one word, this show is Fantabulous!! Thank you for bringing Sunday Family Fun Night back (I was a Sunday night Disney girl ;) )
And, weirdly, I'm actually a little more comfortable with regular Cassandra having seen evil!Cassandra act out on how genuinely pissed off she is by the hand she's been dealt, so well played.
Late to the party, again -- I only got around to watching this afternoon, Sunday (it was a busy week).
Thing I most want to see:
Someone using that fencing mask! You are taunting us.
Meanwhile, I was watching this by myself, and College Girl wandered through the living room, asked who the characters were, and started watching. Another fan is created!
The void "Librarians" is filling for me is actually "Doctor Who". This reminds me more of Olde Skool Doctor Who than the post-2005 series does: cheesy, happy, companionable.

Watching with my dad, he wanted to know, was the World Crime League a Buckaroo Bonzai reference or is it the same organization and they take place in the same universe?
"Son of Ban", huh? So DuLaque IS Lancelot.
But who is Jenkins? Merlin? Arthur? Gawain?
MODRED?
Fun and wacky episode! Some questions:
""Son of Ban", huh? So DuLaque IS Lancelot.
But who is Jenkins? Merlin? Arthur? Gawain?
MODRED?"
I'm thinking Percival.
Or possibly Galahad.
That would make things very interesting
Saw the flying dragon in the previews but not in the episode. Was the scene cut?
All of us uber-nerds are delighted by the shoutouts to World Crime League and Wold Newton and O2STK... and really they make such perfect in-story sense for the Library. I'm already thinking of a crossover between the Librarians and the Middleman and Buckaroo Banzai; if I didn't have a rule about writing for free I'd be hip-deep in a giant fanfic right now. You are making all of us giddy at the Wold Newton Facebook group. Looking forward to hearing mentions of the Vishanti and the Parliament of Trees and the Kim Newman version of the Diogenes Club.
Seriously, we love it. And the show. Keep it up.
Thanks again for another fun episode!
So, uh, just purely out of curiosity...
Will the Harley Quinn / Midnighter / Root / River Tam version of Cassandra be back?
(Aware "solving every problem with the Hulk" might not be viable in the long run, but STILL.)
I think it would interesting if John Larroquette is actually playing Guinevere.
When will this loose group ever become a team? By now I expected more cohesiveness and character development.
So who were all the members of the Conclave?
Will we get more info about Lamia's background?
What happened to those Japanese 20somethings from the beginning? Did the dragon scare their pants off or were they his evening snack?
I'm over here a) loving the show, especially Cassandra and her interactions with Ezekiel; b) praying for more stealthy Middleman crossovers.
Loving this show, John. Fun as hell!
I have a few questions
1) are Jenkins and Dulaque brothers?
@Anon 4:14
Oh, that was clever! Really clever!
Was the muscular blond guy at the conclave Urijah Faber?
Great episode! Thanks.
Now on to my questions:
1) I did not totally understand how the Cassandra off switch worked.
Thanks!
Do you ever scare the rest of the
writer's room? Or do they just go 'cool!' when you start weaponizing math?
B) @Marquis My money's on Bedivere with a side bet on Gareth or Gaheris (assuming the Orkney bros aren't dead).
Ooh.Or Ector de Maris, that would be cool, but he's probably not well known enough. I will be astonished if he's Gawain or Mordred. Percival...I could see Percival. Galahad would explain a lot of the reactions, but honestly, I can't see any version of Galahad turning into Jenkins. If he is Galahad, I would be extremely interested in hearing how that
happened.
Crap, I forgot about Galehaut. That's a really good bet.
4) Loved the Vlog! Did you very carefully pick the section of The Board with none of this season's episodes on it? Do we get to see Jenkins' poker night? Or should
those of us desperately hoping the steampunk episode gets made send lots of fanmail to TNT begging them to give us a Season Two?
No question, just the gushing.
Thanks for being here for us, Rogers.
I love that with the power as the Librarian Flynn is able to find the door to the Annex when he needs to.
Have noticed that Christian Kane is still spinning objects in whatever show he does. It is like a wheres Waldo thing to find these scenes
Question: Does the desk resetting mean that Flynn is about to return and the Annex is getting things ready for him?
It seemed obvious to me that, while DuLaque somehow managed to engineer the calling of the conclave, he had no idea that the Apple of Discord was inside the pearl.
1) Did Mr. Drake put it inside a pearl and, if so, why? (to make things between the dragons worse, just for the hell of it, or to try and mess with DuLaque's machinations?)
2) *Was* the pearl actually stolen (or moved by Mr.
Hi!
I hope that we see it again and that it won't be so easily turned off--I'd love to see everyone try and deal with it.]
Thanks!! :)
Cheers!
Oh . . . here's an actual question:
Dabra(sp?): City of Bronze - the Djinn
Sililandria: Fae Legions - Silver ?
Cú Chulainn of the Iron Kingdom
African group?
Guild of Fictional Entities
World Crime League.
Oh, not such a quick note I guess.
};D
Is this too late to make a comment? I guess I’ll find out.
Great episode! I loved the conclave with all its different members, and I hope the show gets lots and lots of seasons so you can explore all those different worlds. Thanks for doing these Q&As – they add a lot to the experience of watching the show.
Questions:
1.) This is sort of speculation more than a question, but here goes: I LOVED the scene between Du Lac and Jenkins.
2a) The Serpent Brotherhood have tattoos to denote who they are...will The Librarians get something as well? ;)
2b) Do any of the cast have tattoos? and if so are they hard to keep covered? (for the integrity of the show of course ;) )
When Season 2 is announced, you start filming and need crowd "extras", look no further than the Kaniacs LOL It would be an honour ;)
I have become more educated watching this series...constantly looking up info and sharing with my kids! Thank you
In one word, this show is Fantabulous!! Thank you for bringing Sunday Family Fun Night back (I was a Sunday night Disney girl ;) )
Thanks for addressing my previous comment.
I really like and even highly appreciate your writing. please read our article Pengobatan kemaluan keluar nanah
