Completly off topic, aside from the fact that you and your crew know and see all: Tell me that Hardison has one of these 3D printers and that we might see one used in an episode.

Thank you for all you do.

"Doctor Parker and her companion"? Can't wait to see that!

15 minutes in and I'm as bored as Parker. Reaaally would like to see more of what's going on with the rest of the crew. Your ensemble is the best EVER - why you feel the need to dick with it left and right is beyond me.

Less than half way thru and I'm going to go out on a limb and say we are NEVER going to get to see the full con the others were on, are we? How much fun did the 4 of them have showing a 'mystery' con?

So, how long before the waitress is a client?

lol - nevermind.

Just watched the Briken Wing preview on iTunes and I could be imagining it but it sure looked to me like Elliot recognized that monkey statue that Sohphie walked out with. Perhaps it has jade eyes, or a jade piece that has since been broken off/taken etc. ?
Are we getting a glimpse of the infamous Jade Monkey that caused Elliot so much trouble in one of his pre-Leverage adventures? Can't wait to find out this and more in the next exciting installment. . .

Oh, I love me a good Parker-centric episode! And I love a good takeoff on "Rear Window," no matter how many shows do it. And I love Parker's crutch-fu and her gloating. And I love Amy -- can we keep her? And I love the Chicken Parm guy, too, and what they did for him at the end. (I don't like fish either!)

Just one thing -- I didn't quite buy that Nate & Co. would have left Parker to do all that on her own with a hurt leg. I know they were in Japan and all, but still, wish they could have found some way to send her some help.

And are we ever going to find out how she hurt it in the first place? It's so unlike Parker to get injured!

What did Nate and Sophie burned ??!?? And I really thought Nate was going to kiss Sophie when she said "Go ahead" :) Liked the episode, Love the show Keep the great work!

Just saw the preview for next week...Where did Eliot's hair go?

The feel-good episode of the summer! Fun episode. Only one or two questions; the rest are comments.

1. Were "V" and "K" either Blade Runner references (Voight-Kampf), Dollhouse references (where everyone was a letter), or Veach and Kirsch? And who would "O" have been?
2. I WANNA SEE THE JAPAN STORY!
3. Not being a viewer of "Big Bang Theory", I had not seen Aarti Mann. Nice work from her!
4. "I'm gloating." Back to the series format from the episode that departs from the series format. Fun!

WWWeaves said...

OOOH. 1)How much did Nate know, and when did he know it?
2) How many of the patrons were Portland actors? cops? Romeo? Juliet? Doctor?
3) Will we see Amy again?

Parker Home Alone... I love it. And I think what I loved most about it was how much Parker had to grow in the course of the series to earn this episode. You just couldn't have done this in seasons 1 or 2: Parker's emotional evolution hadn't progressed to the point where she could have really gotten involved in the people around the crime. She may have twigged to the thieves, but she may not have considered the collateral damage that could come of amateurs with guns. She certainly wouldn't have bonded with Amy like she did. I genuinely like the Parker she's becoming as much as the Parker she used to be.

A question occurs, though... Did Hardison choose a Brewpub that was a stones throw from a Bank and a Jewelry store by accident? And how much does it say that Parker hadn't cased them yet?

Anonymous said...

Leverage being one of my favorite shows and Rear Window being one of my favorite movies, this was a peanut butter cup of two great tastes that taste great together! Really enjoyed the clever twists and the cameos of the "real con job" and also an idea through Amy and the random extras of how the staff at the brew pub relate to the team. This is vying with French Connection to being my favorite episode of the season.

Questions:
1. In Hitchcock, er, "homage", did anyone make a director/writer/producer cameo in the pub this ep?

2. Was the sword Eliot had the same one that was his Christmas present from Nate and Sophie a couple seasons ago?

3. Did you actually fully draft a con as unwritten backstory or just come up with random moments to show as a "con in Japan"?

4. Someone above asked this, but what was the deal with Nate and Sophie burning something? Japanese tradition? Internal backstory?

Lydia W said...

First watch, LOVE IT! More serious questions and thoughts later. But, seriously, not even a word that the team is stealing the Sapphire Monkey!?

(this new CAPTCHA is seriously discouraging)

Sarah W said...

First thing I thought of was the Elliot's Monkey---unless the monkey in the box was the Monkey. I don't really want to know--it would spoil the mystique, but please tell me that was deliberate on the part of the writers?

Nice take on Rear Window (and Home Alone)! Though it hurt to watch Parker do so much on her bad leg--and I was waiting for her final fall ala James Stewart. Glad it didn't happen!

"People who have to help." I love that Parker counts herself among those people. Her development over these past years has been beautifully done---natural and not without its pitfalls.

Excellent ep--even if we'll never know what Nate and Sophie burned in the firepit (or will we?).

(Whoa--Elliot CUT HIS HAIR for the summer finale? SERIOUSLY?)

Unknown said...

I'll just keep a running list here.

1) OMG, Parker snorted. That's so cute.

2) Parker's talking to a teddy bear, a la Castaway?

3) Is Eliot using the sword Nate and Sophie gave him for Christmas?

4) The Breaking News bit when Parker is bored early - something about "no suspects yet" and "Metro Grill" (or missing girl?) is the thing the two hinky guys are involved in? I didn't really track why they had to "lie low."

5) Is the fact that the job is in Tokyo related to the map on Hardison's computer in the last 30 seconds of 501 where Tokyo was clearly labeled?

7) "I read ... blogs." LOL. Amy will be a regular, please?

8) The annotated "Parker sees this" is good! I like it.

9) Has Eliot been teaching Parker to play with sticks (i.e., crutches)?

10) "Gloat is required."

11) For someone who is emotionally challenged, Parker is remarkably perceptive.

12) Nate made Parker smile. Nice.

13) Next week is summer finale, so ... when does it come back?

14) Was the zombie movie an actual zombie movie? If so, what was it?

15) Do we ever get to see what they were doing in Tokyo?

And again, thank you so much for the show, and the blog, and the commentaries on the DVD!!!!!

Unknown said...

Shayna - That was The Two Horse Job, wasn't it? They were interrogating Eliot and yelling, "where is the monkey?" I might be remembering incorrectly...

Anonymous said...

Were the crutches purchased from a medical supply, or were they made for the show? A someone who spends an inordinate amount of time with sprained ankles & knees, thus on crutches, they looked very functional.

Gary Ancheta said...

God, I love Rear Window. That is one of my favorite Hitchcock movies. This was a perfect adaptation for Leverage, with the use of their eavesdropping technology. Parker even has a Grace Kelly quality. It also feels like Sliver too.

Unknown said...

Ooooh, just thought, Amy's dad is a (multi-)billionaire, involved in international business ... and Hardison hired her. Will Amy's dad be a client? Or a mark? I'm assuming Hardison did not hire her by accident, or for her charity work.

Rebecca said...

Oh, gosh, such a good episode! Poor Parker, incapacitated and left behind. Well, she found her own excitement, didn't she?

A few questions/thoughts:

1) Since this is a Parker-heavy episode, does that mean there's an episode later on that's Parker-lite? I know that sometimes episodes' shooting schedules coincide making it necessary to split the cast.

2) If the answer to 1 is yes, will it involve seeing what the hell the rest of the team was doing in Japan? (If the answer to 1 is no, will we ever get to see what happened in Japan, or will it just a be a really big Noodle Incident Job?)

3) What did Parker name the teddy bear?

4) I LOVED getting to see a little into Parker's mind when she looked at the getaway van. Most of the time her thinking is so outside of the box that you can't follow it, so it was nice to get a look at what she thinks when she sees something.

5) The pills make her go all "wibbly-wobbly?" Doctor Who shoutout, or me reading too much into it?

6) Can Amy come back more? It's nice to see Parker making another friend, especially since Alice White was burned (or was she?).

7) It's nice to see how perceptive Parker has become since the beginning of the series. There is NO WAY that season1!Parker would have been able to show that kind of empathy to Dr. Chicken Parm (James?) the way that season5!Parker does.

Other people already asked about the sword, so I'll skip that question and just wait for the answer.

I think this is one of my favorite episodes so far this season. Thank you for giving us such a wonderful show to watch every week (at least until next week - I hate split seasons!).

While I thought it was a cute show...Parker really "grew up" in this episode...I have to say I keep missing the team-working-together dynamics this season. I hate to say it, but I'm rather disappointed with many of the episodes so far...time to go to my dvds for more of the Leverage "family vibe" I guess. :(

Unknown said...

I can't remember. It was certainly one of the quickie flashbacks from season one. But now I'm questioning where I picked up that it was a Jade Monkey...or even an inanimate object to begin with. I probably wouldn't have remembered it at all if not for the way Elliot squinted at the statue in Sophie's hands and licked his lips like an unpleasant thought just crossed his mind.

Unknown said...

I genuinely loved this episode. Parker is my favorite character and I know what it's like to be stuck at home and bored out of my skull. Also, I love how the job the rest of the gang was doing in Japan was left so vague. Really got my imagination working overtime on why Hardison was in a military uniform.

Thanks for a great show and an amazingly fun episode.

Nekussa said...

I really enjoyed this one! Beth did a great job carrying this episode. And I have no need to know what was going on in Tokyo -- I think it's far funnier just to see the little glimpses we got.

When words were popping up on screen as Parker was looking at the van, I had a "Sherlock" flashback. :)

Love the crutch twirl!
I was waiting for Eliot to come back and make good Chicken Parm that the man would like - your way was better.
Loved the gloat.
What the heck did Nate burn?
Something you said in last weeks post - do you get different stuff on the iTunes version of the eps? Is it the same on the DVDs?

Thanks for more great episodes.

Bex said...

Brilliant episode. Took me a while to place where I'd seen Amy before. LOVED the fact that we only got snippets of what was happening in Japan...left more of it up to the imagination. Though I am totally curious what Nate and Sophie were burning...

Seems more obvious now that Nate is letting the others step up more and learn more. Half expected a fatherly kiss on the top of the head for Parker at the end there.

You guys definitely seem to be splitting the gang up more. Is this possibly getting us into preparation for the finale (that, from what I hear, will shatter us all) or is the second half of the season going to have more of them all working together like previous seasons? Not that I mind either way, I rally think the dynamic is rocking this season.

Susannah said...

Usually, I'm in this for the ensemble, so I was a little worried how I'd like a Parker-centric episode largely free of the rest of the team. But my fears were for naught because I really, really loved it. Parker was a great choice to shoulder a solo episode. It helps that she can carry on a conversation with an inanimate object and still be entertaining. But Amy made a great sidekick! Is it too much to hope that we'll be seeing more of her?

Some things I loved about this episode, in no particular order: how it highlighted Parker's emotional growth over the course of the series; the team's absolute confidence that Parker could take care of herself; Amy's perspective of Hardison as a boss; seeing more of the restaurant and its regular patrons; Parker being awesome; Parker making friends and connecting with people all on her own.

And, since this is technically supposed to be a question post ... I don't have any substantive questions, so I'll have to ask a superficial one: What's with Eliot's facial hair? Why suddenly the full beard this week? Not that I'm complaining. At. All. What? These things are important. (I'm also dying to know about his hair cut in the previews, but I'm assuming you won't be explaining that until next week, so I'll just sit back and wait patiently.)

Anonymous said...

I was super excited for this episode and you didn't disappoint. I loved it from beginning to end. I do have to second the comment about how Parker didn't know that there was a bank and jewelery store on the same corner though. That seemed a bit odd. I am also putting my vote in for more Amy. She was definitely awesome.

Looking forward to next week. I was so excited from the Sterling squee that I didn't even notice Kane's haircut until someone pointed it out. Yay for Mark Sheppard!

"I'm gloating." Not only laughed out loud, but laughed really loud. Don't worry, the cats will recover eventually.

I, too, prefer seeing just glimpses of the other job. Seems like a great way to use ideas that won't fit into an episode.

So, Parker was hacker, hitter, grifter AND mastermind. And technically a thief, since she stole Amy from the kidnappers.

I was a little concerned that Amy would be tipped that there's something up with the crew in the back, but she's been coopted now. Is this all part of Nate's grand scheme? (And it was a little bit of Hogwarts/Charles Xavier School for the Gifted with Parker "training" Amy in the ways of con-avenger fu.)

Absolutely fantastic episode. Loved every minute. While I adore the entire cast, I really didn’t mind them stepping back this time and letting Parker run the show. Beth Riesgraf was amazing, kept my attention the entire show. Actually watched it twice. I admit, even though I’m a long time Leverage fan, lately I’ve gotten weary of the complicated cons. Too much for my addled brain to follow -- or care about. This script was more about the human element and less about gadgets and 'tricks.’ I can’t believe someone said they were ‘bored.' Everyone involved in this episode should be proud. Thanks for taking a chance on doing something so ‘out of the box’ to use a cliche.

Finally a question: I gather that “Parker” in this episode is a little out of character, but even that didn’t strain credibility it was so well done. This almost looks like a pilot for Beth. A spinoff possible sometime in the future? Leverage writers, get on this!!

And another question: Any backlash from the cast about a script centering on one member? (You don’t have to answer that.)

@Shayna J. houp- Perhaps it was a sapphire Monkey(from the 2 horse job?)
@IMForeman- Parker cases banks on weekends as noted in the 3 card monte job
@Philip Moyer #14 That is the Original B&w George Romero's Night of the Living Dead
- That is the episode I was remembering.
I enjoyed the callbacks, The Parker 2000 from carnival job and Eliot's Hanzo blade and the Sapphire Monkey (?)
I have to agree that this ep could not have been done earlier.
Amy was sweet and very sympathetic.
I loved the gloat and how rub it in your face but awkward it was.
All in all a great episode.

Loved it! And I'm assuming we'll get to see what the rest of the gang was up to in a future episode...and hopefully more of Amy.

Who is the actress that played Amy?

Faybe Bay said...

Definitely would like to know if we will ever see the other half, the job done in Japan, kind of like The Girls Night Out and The Boys Night Out last season. The other question, probably asked, where did you get those crutches, they are the best! You could probably get rich selling those. And they also make a great weapon in a pinch!

Really good bottle episode! I love Rear Window & this was a great way to pay homage to Hitchcock. Plus I liked getting to learn more about the way Parker thinks & views the world. Were here conversations with the teddy bear a nod to Cast Away? Also, since this was a Parker-centric episode & the other main cast didn't play a large part, was this episode filmed at the same time as another episode?

oppyu said...

I liked this episode. It's not often that it seems like the Leverage team is in serious jeopardy, but Parker, injured and alone with a gun-happy cop-shooting nutcase does the trick.

1) If we don't see what happened in Japan, I'm going to be very upset. You're going to show us what happened in Japan, right?

2) How do the team not know they have a billionaire working as a waitress? If anyone was going to do exhaustive, civil liberty-violating background checks (or at the very least a Google search) before hiring people, it would be the Leverage team.

3) Cop-shooting nutcase had attempting a kidnapping with two witnesses, shot a cop in front of another witness, there was an armed cop searching his getaway van, more police were on the way and he was in a room with more surveillance equipment than Post-Olympics London... what possessed him to go after Parker instead of running for the hills and hoping he can get across some kind of international border? (amazing that he had the temerity to tell Parker that she was in over her head)

4) Parker will be back in time for the next big con, right? Hardison's grown more versatile lately, but I don't think he can cut it as a front-line thief.

Calla said...

Loved Parker going solo (plus one). Loved that you got Pria from Big Bang Theory.

Did Beth really hurt her knee? I vaguely remember her tweeting something about that a while back.

Are you really filming inside the Bridgeport Brewpub? If not, why use an established business instead of just making one up?

Finally - next week's previews! OMG - Eliot's hair!

petticoat said...

Going along with the "baby bird learning to fly" theme for the whole crew, I'm glad Parker got an entire episode to show us what she could do. As the "baby" of the team, I think it would've left a lot of skepticism if we hadn't seen her act the Mastermind.

Questions:

1.) Why did Parker pour the water out of the vase before attaching the bug to the flowers? I assumed she was doing it to put the bug in the vase, but she didn't. Plot point so Amy could destroy it with the water later thus putting Parker in a vent?

2.) Please divulge the story of her torn ACL.

3.) Swanky crutches! (Apparently that's not a question.)

(And I think I could watch her talk to Parker 2000 for forever.)

thank you so much for the Parker episode. Love Beth and the character so much.
Q1: Nate knew what was happening cause they were there a few days already and they knew who the daughter was so this was his way of grooming Parker to lead..right??

Q2:We all know Beth is a goofball and cracks up all the time during filming so did this spisode take much longer than usual to shoot cause of her laughing?? I'm really looking forward to this episodes gag reel

Q3: If this is the last season then you are brilliant cause you setting things up for great spin-offs...any time table on season 6 status??

Q4: Who's idea was the gloating bit? another hilarious moment

thank you again

Loved the crutch for the teddy-bear, but I can totally see Bunny getting jealous.

I was half-prepared for the guys to be up to nothing, but that would have been less fun. Besides, it's Leverage-verse where there IS a sinister conspiracy lurking behind every civic duty... were the parallels with "Juror #6" intentional? (Parker bored. Parker sees something sinister. Parker isn't crazy... at least about that).

Okay, not this ep, but all these people bringing up "The Two Horse Job" made me think of it.

In "Two Horse", Sophie mentions pulling off 'The Lost Heir' con. You've said Charlotte is another con identity, but it holds up rather well. Is Charlotte the result of Sophie succeeding all-too-well at the 'Lost Heir'?

Anonymous said...

Loved this episode. The gloat was particularly perfect - like Parker knew she was suppose to do it, even if she didn't quite know how. A perfect end to an episode which demonstrated Parker's growth throughout the series, while still showing her ... unique ... way of thinking.

1) What happened to the snow monkey after the con was over?
2) Parker called Hardison and Nate when she needed help with something specific, but her phone call to Eliot seemed like a general call to a mentor figure. Was it a specific choice to take their dynamic in that direction after the Long Way Down Job, or was it something we can assume was always there that just never really made it to screen in the earlier seasons? And is it just me, or does it seem like Parker has 'graduated' from Sophie up to Eliot, in terms of mentorship? Like, Sophie handled basic human interaction, and now Parker's ready to move on to a teacher who can help her with specifics (since she and Eliot are more alike in some ways)?

I was really stuck by the doctor in this episode.

His wife died only 27 days ago? I know I didn't leave the house except for the funeral, then after that it seemed like I didn't leave for months.

I get him reacting to the shooting, even if he'd been too grieved to go into work. But his reaction to Parker bringing him all that food... it was odd. I mean, he wasn't really looking for a chicken parm to replace his wife's chicken parm - he was looking to feel what he felt when he had the chicken parm his wife made him. And he must instinctively know that, otherwise, he'd have been trying chicken parms at different resturants all over the city, rather than expecting the same resturant to suddenly change up their recipe. So, I don't know how finding a new favorite food is really what he needs or wants.

And Parker - she's come a very, very long way emotionally to interact with the doctor on this level. In fact, she did far more for this stranger than my friends did for me.

I think I need better friends if Parker is out-doing them emotionally.

Where did that bit of the story come from - why a grieving widow, rather than something else? Was this something personal for one of the writers? Maybe something that happened to him or her that helped life them out of the hole the grief creates?

I'm asking - I have to ask - because after all this time (not a month, not even months, but years later), I'm still in a holding pattern - can't go back to the way things were, when they don't exist anymore, but can't go forward either, because nothing seems interesting or important enough.

I keep looking at damanged characters on tv shows and in books, looking to see if they're like me, and if they are, even a little bit, then what is it that the're doing to deal with such a devestating loss. I was sort of hoping I'g find something I could use by watching the Winchester Brothers in Supernatural - but their writers aren't letting them move foreward, because somehow that show's become all about how the writers can emotionally torture those to boys.

Then leverage - Nate losing his son. Not a great role model, but at least I could gleen what not to do, how not to behave - don't be a bastard and don't be an alcoholic. Check and check.

Ultimately, it seems I'm looking in the wrong places for answers, for inspiration, for clues, but I don't know where else to look; I don't know what else to do?

But I don't think even a bowl of Eliot's best chili could help get me out of this very deep hole I'm in.

I don't suppose you've got any wise words for me? Any advice? Maybe send Kane over to give me a version of the talk he had with Parker in "The French Connection Job"? Recommend a book I should read or a movie I should see? Anything? Obi-wan Rogers, you're my only hope.

Anonymous said...

The "Baby bird's learning how to fly" line seemed a bit condescending to me. I know you didn't intend it that way, but that's what I got from it. Parker isn't really a 'baby' on the team given she's had 4 years with them. She was very successful on her own before joining the team and it just seemed that Sophie was throwing all of that away and not giving Parker the respect she deserves.

Karo said...

Wheee, Parker! So much Parker, and with a great sidekick. I enjoyed this very much.

Questions/comments:
Was it a coincidence that the doctor stayed behind when the fire alarm rang even though everyone left? Or did he come back from outside because he heard the shots? (Why did the police officer let him and didn't come back again after he called for reinforcement on his phone?)
I was surprised that Parker didn't know all the places with potential valuables in the whole area by heart.
Trying to surprise the kidnappers in the dark seems extremely risky, wouldn't it have been easier to drop something on them, make them slip on the floor, or idk, something else? (I thought they could surprise them from above, but maybe there wasn't enough time to get into the harness.)
Parker must have managed to hide anything suspicious before the cops came to take the bad guys away, but that's difficult in short time with one leg, so Amy probably helped her and saw a lot. Can't be helped, I suppose. I wonder how much she guesses about what her boss does, and I hope we'll see her again.

Just wanted to say Great episode! I love parker and how much she continues to grow as a person. Beth plays her so well. I can't believe she hasn't won more awards for playing the most interesting person on tv.

BTW-I laughed so hard when she was talking to the bear and loved that her favorite dating show "was beauty and the geek" Nice touch. Whose idea was that?

I would have liked to see a bit more of the Japan job, and for those who've asked, this is not a split episode. Unless there's a Japan job in season 6, we won't see what happened. I missed the rest of the cast, but MMV of course.

Anonymous at 12:56 - I have to agree. I thought it was presumptious for them to try to replace the dish.

Also, sorry to hear about your loss. Have you ever read the Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion? It's her memoir about trying to find some sort of balance after her husband of decades passed away. I gave it my grandmother after my grandfather passed after 60+ years of marriage.

I found it to an amazingly direct and insightful look at how people deal with grief - she really tried to take apart what she was feeling so she could understand it. Perhaps you might find some words of wisdom/solace or at least a like mind there?

Good luck.

Not episode-specific, but is there any chance you have a leverage.def file for Screenwriter that you're willing to share? ;-) It'd be great to have your actual format to work with....

I loved this episode. Great job on doing something different and having it succeed.

I'd like to know about how the production on this episode differed from others. I mean, the 'B' team had so much less to do, and there was so much MORE going on with a single character. So, can you go into the process a bit?

Why did Parker decided to try and render the bad guys unconscious with a beating vs. using her taser? She must have a bunch hidden around the bar / office (aside from the 6 previously discussed weapons in the bar, of course)

I'm sad that Parker hadn't cased each corner before -- that was a lost opportunity for some awesome competence porn.

I know we'll never find out what happened in Japan, but do the WRITERS know? I mean, I think it's awesome that we only got these snippets, but was there an actual loose plot that the writers knew about? Or were each segment just there to be ridiculous?

While you don't know what's going on for next year yet, what happens to all the Leverage stuff? Like, during the filming hiatuses, where does Old Nate go? Do the sets just stick around on a lot / in a warehouse? Did someone have to dig to find the Parker 2000?

On a personal note: last November I tore my MCL and was on bed rest for 2 weeks (and light duties for much longer) and had the same leg brace that was used in the ep. It was during that time that a friend recommended Leverage to me, and I watched all available 54 episodes within those two weeks. Without that injury, I would have never found this show! AND I feel like I've gone full circle.

So, thanks for helping me not go crazy while not being able to move! (and I agree, those crutches look WAY more functional than the ones I was using.)

Anon @ 12:56 -- I am so very sorry for your loss. You'll be in my prayers and thoughts.

Do you know "A Grief Observed," the journal that C. S. Lewis kept after his wife's death? Don't know if that would do you any good or not -- different people seem to need different kinds of books -- but you might want to check it out, just to see.

As for the "new favorite meal" -- hard for me to weigh in on that, I guess, not having gone through what both you and this character have gone through. But it occurs to me that maybe it wasn't REALLY about finding him a new favorite dish -- maybe it was just about providing a grieving man with some good food and, more importantly, some good fellowship.

@Art_Connery: I know she still was casing banks for fun in Season 3, but here is a Bank that is literally across the street from the Brewpub where they base their operations (and where she sometimes sleeps) and she had to look it up on Google Maps. It says to me that she hasn't cased it. She didn't even know it was there.

Parker's happy.

Unknown said...

@Gina - I think the meal was an excellent visual vehicle (probably doesn't rate "MacGuffin") to convey that Parker's compassion for others is blossoming or flourishing. This is particularly relevant, IMO, given Eliot's success at teaching Parker the emotional and aesthetic importance of food. Would it have been what the doctor needed? Maybe not ... but having Parker deliver it soaked in kindness seems perfect to me.

If the kidnapping was just a snatch and grab while Amy was taking the trash out, why did it take 4 kidnappers days to try it? And why did you need 4 kidnappers for a snatch and grab? Seems to me it could have been done in a day (or two).

I really liked this episode and thought Parker was funny. The only thing that bothered me was that everyone has been talking about being a team, but when Parker needed the team they pretty much left her hanging. Sure she figured it out and they were proud of her, but what about being there for your team. This is the second time Parker has seen a con in action (Juror #6 Job)when the rest of the team dismissed it. Is this part of the story line or Parker just getting a raw deal on the team having faith in something other than her stealing skills.

Suzanne said...

Forgot to mention -- I call shenanigans on Parker not knowing that there was a jewelry store and a bank that close to the brew pub.

Anonymous said...

What kind of relationship do you have with (the real) BridgePort? I was surprised that that 1) it exists (you've mentioned legal clearances many times) and 2) it's across the street and/or a block away from the fictional BridgePort Brewpub/Brewery. 3) What's actually in the building you've placed the fictional brewpub?

It was good to see Parker in action, I like Beth very much, but I’m missing Sophie/ Gina soooo much! Amy was nice but I fear she will be substituting one of the team in the near future. Please more Sophie scenes!!! She is my favorite!

I loved this episode ! It was Parker-riffic, and Parker-out-of-her-element-iffic, and even a bit of a Lower Decks episode (with Amy as a representative of the Brewpub staff) and those are all things I love.

I had two questions coming in : 1) given your usual emphasis on being a five-hander and exploiting that, what was up with devoting a whole episode to a single character ? I'm pretty sure you've never done that before. and 2) That was a Japanese sign on the door behind Tim, is that a standard Hollywood prop or did you ACTUALLY SHOOT ON LOCATION IN JAPAN ?

But I realized question 2 was stupid, because who would shoot on location halfway around the world for a few Noodle Incident sequences. But then, some of the other comments made me think... if this is going to be a split-the-team couple of episodes like you did with Girls vs Boys that one time... THEN WE MIGHT ACTUALLY SEE THE JAPAN JOB AND IT MIGHT ACTUALLY HAVE BEEN SHOT ON LOCATION ????

... I don't know, it seemed to blatantly noodle-incidenty for that. But then there is that whole overarching mystery and Hardison having a map of the world on his computer and all. Hmmm.

ChelseaNH said...

@oppyu: How do the team not know they have a billionaire working as a waitress?

Amy's not a billionaire; her father is. Hardison would know about that, possibly Nate or Eliot would be interested in the employee backgrounds, but there's no reason for the entire team to be briefed.

Not related to this episode -- but Beth put a picture on her tumblr page of herself being fitted for a brown wig -- what episode is that going to be in?

After destroying my own ACL, I was told VERY emphatically to keep bending the knee - before and after the surgery. Otherwise, most or all of the mobility would be gone.

I know each doctor is different, but that straight leg frame was pretty glaring to me

Just sayin' ;)

Parker is so sweet! Beth was fabulous, just saying. Questions:
1. What was the rest of the cast doing while Beth filmed this, aside from those handful of scenes.
2. We didn't get to see Eliot fight with samurai swords? REALLY????????
3. How exactly did Parker hurt herself? (Or did Beth actually injure herself?)
4. What happened in Tokyo? 4a. What happened between Nate and Sophie in Tokyo?
5. Why did Parker never call Sophie for help? She called everybody else, including Nate, but Sophie's usually the one she goes to for advice. Why no Sophie call?
6. May we have Amy again? Please?
7. Did anybody else think that the bear was bugged and that Amy was in on the thievery for a few minutes?
8. HARDY! Can we see more Hardy? Please...
9. Where was Bunny?
10. The kidnappers are pretty incompetent, if it took them DAYS to pull off a simple snatch/grab.
11. I trust there will be more Sophie in the finale? This episode was decidedly Sophie-light. My only complaint.
12. RENEWAL????????????????????
As always, amazing. Keep up the good work! Best wishes.

Okay that was a bit more rear window than Die Hard or Home Alone, but still good fun.

Though this episode seems to contradict something I recall being mentioned in one of the other question and answer sessions/commentaries...

I recall hearing that before she had started working with the Team Parker had never been caught... so what was she doing talking about how good the food was a French Jail?

I hate to nitpick, but yeah, I know how much work you guys put into this show so I was just wondering what the story is behind that line...

Loved having a Parker-centric episode, especially with all the talking to inanimate objects.

If Beth really hurt herself, this would have been a REALLY agonizing episode for her -- it looked actually quite physically demanding. I'd imagine a script written for the actor's injury would have more of her sitting down.

What did stretch things a bit is how many moving parts were needed to complete the episode, a couple of which make our heroes look like monsters:

-timing Sid and Nancy to block the first attempt requires godlike precognitive ability.

-the doctor's redemption would appear to be contingent on one of the police officers getting shot, which isn't really Parker.

-this being a learning experience for Parker would seem to imply Nate set up her injury, which is a bit far-fetched.

1. Is that THE monkey that Eliot alluded to in season 1?

2. Did Nate have a hand in causing this situation to occur to Parker?

3. What did Nate set on fire?

Thanks for giving us this extended visit with Parker before you kill her off at the season finale. Hardison will be so sad. So will we all!

Beth great job keeping us engaged, I watched it twice and loved it twice.

I have just one worry, that Parker will lose her quirkiness, her outsider-ness, that is the bond that Parker and Hardison have, they are cute social misfits.

Please make sure she keeps driving everybody crazy with her quirks.

易榆 said...

Love Parker as usual!! Her emotion certainly have grown but kind of worry she lost too much "Parker"!!
Really want to know more past about Elliot and Sophie!!!Is she really a duchess???

Re Anonymous at 4:28: "After destroying my own ACL, I was told VERY emphatically to keep bending the knee - before and after the surgery. Otherwise, most or all of the mobility would be gone." Notice that word "surgery". While surgically treated ACL problems usually require flexing the knee, those which are merely torn and being allowed to heal, benefit from enforced immobility and bed rest. Parker actually didn't do either of those very well, but that's the principle.

Now, John, I'm sure it will just fill your happy day with glee and hand-rubbing joy to hear that I liked Hardison and the way he treated Parker in this episode. I'm prepared to overlook his lapses in other episodes. Aren't you relieved? Figured.

On the other hand, I still find him and Parker to be an extremely unconvincing pairing in so many ways...but at least he isn't always a selfish prick.

Now, you're always saying CK would be a great leading man in romantic comedies because he has such great comic timing (agreed) and presumably general attractiveness. Since I spent the last week watching today's version of the RomCom (aka "the Chick Flick") and older ones (His Girl Friday, Philadelphia Story, It Happened One Night, inter alia) I feel safe in saying that what's missing in the modern RomCom is the Rom....and the Com. Damn, chickflicks are bad. So I'm posing the proposition that you write one. Write CK's Peter Warne, or Walter Burns, or CK Dexter Haven (a certain symmetry there), or any of the bickering romantic leads endlessly irritated by their female counterparts. You write that well and you write for him well. It would be freakin' brilliant -- a tall glass of water in the middle of the Sahara. Go Thou. Pick up thy Laptop and write (more).

Please?

It seems like Nate is pushing everyone away, like baby birds out of the nest to make them fly on their own. He knew shit was gonig down/went down with Parker and just let her play it out. It seems like this has been happening with verious members of the team since the beginning of the season. Are any of them noticing this? It seems Eliot might be.

I'm getting the sense Nate is going to leave and he's making sure the team can stand on their own feet, be it alone or together. Perhaps they are what he's trying to build?

I'd pay good money to have seen that fight with Eliot and the ninja/samurai guy. Hell, I'd be Kane would pay goo money to shoot something awesome like that as well.

Also, If you do not bring Amy back I shall be very cross with you. She was awesome!

I loved this episode, great character dev, much like a mystery's writers short story for a character in a series. I'm also suffering from Sophie withdrawal, would love a Sophie-centric episode.

Am just giddy about the Bridgeport Brew pub stuff, used to hang out there all the time when I lived in Portland. This season has been like a love poem to the Rose City, lots of little fun shots and familiar locations and names. FYI, there's a great video on the TNT site where Christian Kane talks about the new set and how Bridgeport gave the rights to the name and logo.

To Anon @ 12:56 I'm so sorry for your loss, thank you so much for sharing your experience.

However, I do think it's in character for the widower to have to leave the house and need be somewhere anonymous--if the kitchen was his wife's domain, it might be too painful for him to go in there. Everyone grieves in a different manner, and that may have been his survival mechanism.

I think Parker was trying to get the widower to try other dishes that he could enjoy and not send back, since to him no one's chicken parm could ever be as good as his wife's was. And he just needed to know he wasn't alone.

I also think that Hardison redeemed himself a little in this episode--to me it has seemed out of character for him to be so clueless this season--he was always pretty sensitive before. He waited a long time for Parker to want "pretzels" and i was looking forward to him obsessing over her and funny little relationship things.

Everything seems to be pointing to this being the last season, all the references to moving on make my stomach ache a little. Hope I'm wrong about that.

Anonymous said...

OK, I just _have_ to ask (ignorant European here): what's a "chicken parm"?

plus: the word verification is completely ridiculous. I am sure a robot would do better at it than me. Trying for the fourth time now. FFS.

Anonymous said...

@Katie - I've heard Rogers say that Kane should give up his action hero fantasies and focus on comedic roles, but I don't recall him mentioning romantic comedies.
I don't think that's quite right for him either. I dig Kane, but he and Cary Grant are totally apples and oranges type-wise.

Now if Rogers wanted to do a wild, offbeat action comedy with Kane in a Matthew McConaghey-esque type unpredictable cowboy role . . . that would probably make both of them happy. Kane could hit the jokes . . .and other people.

Suzanne said...

@the_eye - chicken parm is short for chicken parmesan, a dish with breaded chicken cutlet covered in tomato sauce and melted cheese. Delicious. Also, couldn't agree more about the word verification.

John -- still can't get past the kidnapping planning. Why, after throwing Amy in the back, did V and K run to the front (other than to show the viewers that the driver/passenger were out cold) -- there are only two seats in the front. What were they planning to do?

Anonymous said...

I prefer the Parker+Hardison relationship to the Sophie+Nate even though Sophie+Nate have far more romantic moments, but the things said between Parker+Hardison are more memorable - "I got you girl", "pretzels".
Also, we have front row fun seats to Hardison+Parker learning the rules of relationships.

They know they care about each other more than they care about anybody else but they are just now learning how to express the romantic side of it.

Kudos to the writers the coupling of the handsome Geek and the lovely Dork, was a stroke of genius - It was a new path for growth.
A Parker+Eliot wouldn't have worked it would have looked fake and strained, the real chemistry was Parker+Hardison.

Love the writing, love the show.

@Suzy Q,

V and K ran to the front of the van to let the driver know that the cargo was loaded that they could now leave.
Then they would go to their separate cars.
--
Also, about them taking awhile to do the kidnapping - she is the daughter of a rich man so you need to make sure she doesn't have shadow bodyguards and that you will get away before her disappearance is noticed and the Police are notified notified, plus after the ransom is paid you need to have a good disappear plan.

Truly loved this episode, but in the scene where Parker is looking and admiring Amy's art work brought up an interesting question in my mind: Does Parker know that she, too, is a talented artist? In "The Fairy Godparents Job", she draws a sketch from memory that's so good Hardison and Eliot both are taken by surprise. I don't think her latent talent has been addressed since that episode; are we going to see it again?

Another question: The employees' love of Hardison as a boss struck me as very illuminating into Hardison's character. Has his experience running the BrewPub changed his view on actually working as an honest man?

In response to several comments, the movie that they're watching at the end of the ep is the original 1960's "Night of the Living Dead". While this definitely fits the bill as nerd-fodder, the reason it's in the show is probably because the movie is public domain.

Love it. Love you guys for giving it to us. This ep was so much fun it has displaced one of my top three. I'm really enjoying the relationship between Parker and Eliot (aside from Parker and Hardison, which I love).

I'm afraid for the end of the season, I admit it. But for now I'm enjoying the ride all over the place.

I predict a disturbance in the force when next ep airs. Me? I like it any length. ;)

The Chicken Parm Doc was NOT about the chicken parm... he said his (now deceased) wife insisted on cooking the dish for him because she thought it would make him happy. Dr. Chick-Parm wasn't looking for the "right" chicken parmigiana, he was looking to be considered and cared for the way late wife did. It's subtle but a great way to show Parker connecting with another human. It wasn't presumptuous of Parker to present new dishes to Dr. Chick-Parm. It wasn't about supplanting, but rather introducing the idea that other people can also be considerate and caring. I really appreciated that portrayal and how it mirrors Parker's emotional journey through the last 4.5 seasons.

Now a question: was that a brass monkey?

Carol said...

Okay, this is a really ridiculous question, but I have to ask. When Parker pulled up 'Sid's' phone, we got a glimpse of his real name. I didn't notice what his first name was, but I swear his surname was 'Barrett'. If it was, was that a sly nod, for some reason, to Sid Barrett of Pink Floyd? Or did I just think I saw Barrett because of the name 'Sid'?

I liked the resolution of Chicken Parm Guy. They weren't telling him to forget his sadness, but they were trying to get him to start living again. It was lovely, I thought.

I think things like this can help people who are grieving in real life. We know in real life there are no easy fixes, but at least offering a fictionalised version of things can show us that maybe there is a way to get through our troubles.

As someone who's seen people lose their significant others of many years, I think that whole Chicken Parm thing would have seemed a lot less presumptuous if his wife hadn't been dead for only 27 days. Having seen people I know go through that . . . ugh, that scene just pissed me off on many many levels. It literally enrages me. It just rang wrong on a lot of different levels.

But, you know, Parker is the Leverage world's most awesome person now, apparently. Empathetic, super human abilities to steal and climb onto the undercarriage of moving cars, able to run a job with minimal assistance while maintaining a perfectly healthy relationship.

So I guess it's no wonder that she can solve a perfect stranger's grief, too.

:eyeroll:

I mean really. I know all the writers have a boner for her but does she really have to be THAT PERFECT!?!?!?

Girl Saturday said...

As someone who not that long ago lost their soul mate of 20+ years, I have to weigh in on the whole Chicken Parm thing . . .

Everyone grieves differently. I spent a lot of time doing the same old things and feeling empty because I was doing them alone. A friend, who was really just an acquaintance at that time, was the first person to pull me out of that rut. The approach Parker used, would have worked for me. It was making a new memory to help him start moving on. That being said, I don't think it would work on everybody.

However, it's a TV show. The point was to show that Parker cared and tried to help (with an EMOTIONAL situation dealing with GRIEF), a situation she would have avoided in the past. I doubt any of the writers believe that it's this simple in real life, however IT'S A TV SHOW. If you want reality, don't watch TV. Even reality TV isn't real.

I love Parker, but it's not Leverage without the rest of the team. I felt like we were being set up for a Parker spin-off show or something. I watched it twice hoping it would grow on me....nope.

Now for my questions. 1) Who decides what order to show the episodes in? 2)Did they think this was the strongest episode to go up against the Sunday Night Football opener with Peyton Manning?

Sabine said...

I like Parker but I don't want to see an hour of her if it means I get almost no Eliot or Nate or Sophie.
I really missed those guys, so here's my question - can you tell me
1. 3 things Eliot tried to learn but couldn't master
2. 3 subjects Nate does not understand
3. 3 types of people Sophie can't portray in a grift or at least the three most difficult for her

allyone said...

@Girl Saturday -

I never said I wasn't funneling the show through my own biases. Funny thing is, everyone does. That's why some people will watch something and love it and others will watch it and be enraged. That's why no two blog responses are ever the same. I never criticized anyone who liked the ep. But I didn't. And I found the widower to be a rather trite and cheap way to bolster Parker's character.

But thanks a bunch for your patronizing response. Cause really, I never would have guessed it was just a TV show.

Girl Saturday said...

@allyone

Sorry, I really wasn't trying to be patronizing, I just feel like sometimes these posts are too harsh on the show and writers. It's an hour long show and they try to fit a lot in. Some things are going to be simplified, sometimes the timeline is going to be sped up, and some things are going to be unrealistic because it's more entertaining that way or because it's the only way the story can be told in an hour. Sometimes you'll love an episode and sometimes you won't.

And it just seems the comments have been a bit snarky lately and I got annoyed. And yes I realize the irony in the fact that my annoyance with the snarkiness (is that even a word?) resulted in me making a post that came off a bit snarky.

My real point was that I don't think the gesture itself was necessarily out of line, even if they had to speed up the timeline. It probably wouldn't work for everybody, people handle grief differently. I think we all just need to relax a bit and ride the fun train more . . . I'm going back to watching Eliot play baseball. :-)

BenC said...

Very poorly written
1. When you find someone has been sitting at the same spot for days the first thing any smart person would do is try to see what could be seen from that spot not the next day like Parker does
2.The female cop at the end has got to be the the second worst cop in the city (the worst being the male cop who left her to face two armed suspects before they were secured) it just seemed so contrived so the Doctor could step in to save the day.

Anonymous said...

loved seeing Parker 2000(Hardy), and when are we going to see a real kiss between Parker and Hardison , I mean, it's been 5 years!!!! it's Time!

allyone said...

@Girl Saturday -

Thanks for that. I wouldn't get so snarky if I didn't think Rogers was okay with it. He seems like a thick skinned kind of a guy. ;) Plus, he says he welcomes all comers, and I'm assuming the worst thing for any showrunner is indifference. But I know he'll smack me down, too, if he thinks I'm out of line.

That scene rang false to me (less than a month from the death?!?), but it was a whole bunch of stuff with the episode that made me get that snarky.

I was hugely pissed that this is an ensemble show, but the last time we're going to see the ensemble for the next 4+ months is two episodes ago in the Real Fake Car Job, because they decided to end the summer with three straight non-ensemble episodes.

I could deal with one scattered here or there, but three at the end of the summer before a long break? That seems inordinately cruel. For me, this show loses a lot when the five are not together.

I have some other gripes, too, and the widower storyline just didn't help, particularly because it struck a nerve with me.

Talented, certainly, but not perfect. (Don't they all have superhuman talents to some extent? How many times have we seen Eliot beat up multiple thugs at once? :-) ) She's been flawed since the beginning; that's exactly why it's so nice to watch her start overcoming some of those flaws. Also I'm just wondering, were there any scenes that had to be cut due to the fact that this episode was originally supposed to air in the back half of the season? And another quick thing to satisfy my curiosity, what were Nate and Sophie burning?

I'm sure it's only a matter of time before she's running the team.

I'm sure she vomits rainbows and sparkles now.

I love the Parker-centric episode and I love what Beth has done with Parker but I was disappointed in this attempt to make Parker a "mother-Theresa.
My Parker doesn't care or understand that other people have feelings, in fact Parker has a hard time acknowledging her own feelings, apart from Hardison everybody else is a slab of talking meat.

Loved this episode! Two questions for you:

1) Please tell me Nate at least heard Parker out on the situation before pretending the connection was breaking up? Because if he didn't, Nate's secret training plots and general bastardry aside, leaving their injured teammate behind to deal with armed criminals all alone seems like an extremely dangerous thing for him to do. I was surprised Sophie wasn't more concerned too, and I can't imagine Hardison or Eliot would have approved if they'd known. Or do they know Parker can handle herself in a fight, even injured as she was?
2) I know we won't ever find out what happened in Japan, but at least tell us this; we saw the team struggle without a grifter (poor Hardison, kidnapped by Russians), so did they struggle off-screen without a thief? Parker's worries about the team not needing her made me feel so badly for her.

Oh, and Happy Birthday!

While I really loved most of the Parkeriffic episode, I thought the part of the episode after the kidnapping was choppy and felt phony, like parts were missing and poorly cut at times, not like a normal high quality Leverage episode.

What was up with the worst cop in the world? It was embarrassing, and I think the Portland PD and female cops everywhere should sue you for that lame portrayal. Was she a 70's stereotype cut from the DB Cooper show? (The DB Cooper Job was actually fantastic by the way, and Aldis's 70's cop was spot on.) It was just weird that two cops just happened to pop up in the bar, and then act like inept Charley's Angels.

Unknown said...

I think I understand what's going on with Parker, and Rogers, you can tell me if I'm heading in the right direction or not:

Parker has come from a rough childhood and adolescence, and as an adult she's had to live emotionally shut off and in order to focus and think about her job, rather than introspect about her life.

The influence of the team (particularly Eliot and Hardison) has helped her to lower her emotional walls, but with that her emotions are a little more like those of a teenager; raw, uninhibited, unchecked by reason. I don't know that she was being "Mother Teresa" or anything like that; I think she is overwhelmed at times by emotions she never really learned to manage and modulate. I think her compassion is genuinely felt for the gentleman, and maybe it's over the top for most people, but I think Beth helped to sell it for me.

And if, goodness forbid, this IS the last season of Leverage, I'm glad that they've evolved her to this point.

“And what do you find on the other side? When you go on?"
"Your life again. What else?"
"Is that a promise?"
"It's an inevitability. No trick. No choice. You just go on."
At the end of that book, the main character discovers that:
It wasn’t your life again you found, going on. It was your life anew. And it wasn’t at all what he’d been expecting.
I have found this to be true. There is no secret other than putting yourself into life. Recently struggling with “what to do next” I have made it a practice that, unless something strikes me as really wrong, I do whatever is asked of me. I have applied for jobs I didn’t want, gone to movies I didn’t want to see…because as the mother of the hero quoted above says:
"Pain... seems to me an insufficient reason not to embrace life. Being dead is quite painless. Pain, like death, is going to come on regardless. Question is, what glorious moments can you win from life in addition to the pain?"

Quotes above from various books by my favorite author, Lois McMaster Bujold. I got my book group to read Cordelia’s Honor, which I highly recommend.

I tried to format this to make it more readable, but apparently I am incompetent at HTML. See above.

I don't see empathy as out of character for Parker, after all she did rescue the orphans during the first season, even when she didn't think she had the support of the crew.

Also, I think being in a new relationship brings a sense of wanting everyone else to be as happy as she is--and she was in a new opportunity to actually see people in a new light, as the observer. I thought it was well crafted by the writers.

My friends and I have planned an outing just to check the street the Brew Pub's supposed to be on. Look what you've done to us, John Rogers!

Loooooved the Episode. So much fantastic Parker, and somehow the whole thing felt very... Portlandy. In a good way.

Queries:

1) Probably been asked but... You're never going to tell us what happened in Japan, are you? Just gonna let that keep us nettled and haunted forever with ideas?
2) Is Eliot wearing the Hanzo sword he got for Christmas from Sophie and Nate? I know he doesn't travel with luggage but... Going to Japan! Have to take Hanzo sword!
3) Parker obviously doesn't handle impairment well. Considering it, I wonder which team member would be the most insufferable when sick. At first I though Nate, but impairment doesn't phase him much it seems. So I'm stumped. Parker, with her bottled frenetic energy? Sophie? (I picture her being waited on hand and foot because... she can, while at the same time burying her red nose under some pillows so people don't see) Maybe Hardison with his running narration of quippy complaints? Eliot... Well, I'm not sure I believe Eliot CAN get sick.
4) DOES Hardison have any brothers? Just between you and the legions of fangirls of course. Even some particularly fond foster-brothers with vaguely aligning interests will do for our rampant speculations.
5) Oh, forgot to mention, read Little Brother not long after you recommended it and LOVED it. Getting all my friends to read it. Ehem. Just like I addicted them to Leverage. I loved the episode and Parker growing and solving the case without the others. It was very interesting.

Beth Riesgraf was really great in this episode.

And I wanna see the Japan story. Not possible I know.

1. Will we see Amy again? I really liked her!
2. What did Nate and Sophie burn? Does it matter?
3. Is it really possible to crack someones phone like that? If it is. It would be scary.
4. Was this the monkey Eliot should get in a previous episode?

Thank you for answering all the questions.

Since we're approaching the ending that you've had in mind since season one, do you have any idea how you'd progress beyond that if the show is renewed? Will you wait until you hear news of renewal to even begin considering that?

Rider3 said...

Could someone explain to me the significance of when Nate and Sophie are sitting with all those candles and she tells him to light the big middle one. He asks, "Are you sure?" What is the significance of this scene? Thanks!

JR: I am becoming more and more convinced that what is going on it that this is Tim Hutton (and maybe Gina's) last season, and you already know what's going to happen next, and you are all pulling the long con on us. Well, continue good sir, I'm enjoying it.

Anonymous said...

When the team got back at the end, who noticed the bullet holes? Nate definitely seemed to, and I would assume Eliot would pick up on something like that. But what about Hardison and Sophie?

shabet said...

In the beginning of the episode, when a bored Parker is channel surfing, is it Christian Kane's voice on the cooking show?
