Nate wants to build something? Please say you're going Hogwarts/Charles Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters and giving us the Jimmy Ford Memorial Academy and the next generation of conman avengers.
Quite an episode. Tim Hutton gets a chance to show just how good an actor he is. Nice, too, to see Beth Riesgraf stretch her, er, wings. Okay, Aldis might have been a bit over the top in his 70s face and voice, but Kane played it just right - although he may have telegraphed the big secret just enough for me to figure it out. And continuing my LoDuca love fest, the music included a nice echo of John Williams from "Catch Me If You Can" - and Starsky called, he wants his Hutch back.
Just one question though: Could you please explain that ending? Were we supposed to know who Oliver Schmidt was or what he was about? And what is it that Nate wants to "build"? (Yes, I know that's three questions. But they're all tied up in the first one. And I'm pretty sure we'll at least find out the answer to the third one eventually, but the first two might need answering from you in this forum!)
What a fantastic episode! I didn't know anything about DB Cooper before - was most of it ledger or did you guys have to research the hell out of this one too? The Sophie/Nate interactions are lovely but leave me with a little bit of a pit in my stomach about what's coming up down the line. Can you at least reassure me that they will be ok? (ha!) Also, the car stunt was great - that has to have been a stuntie, right?
Really outstanding writing and directing and acting in this episode.
This was a particularly wonderful showcase for Tim Hutton, but Christian Kane, Beth Riesgraf, Fred Ward, Gerald Downey and Ronnie Cox were also great. Fred Ward knocked my socks off in that bar scene, and Timmy knocked my socks off in just about all his scenes, but particularly that daddy-son scene and the scene with Sophie at the end.
It's looking like whatever Nate has in mind, it's not running cons.
I'm just gonna say now we're getting a season 6. So with that in mind, you're not planning to introduce cousin Oliver, the cute, con artist new kid on the block are you? Or since you're a Cosby vet, another little Olivia?
Also - BRILLIANT to pair Kane and Riesgraf up in this ep, since Eliot Parker have such a following. It gives the fanbase something they're dying for but doesn't disrupt the present narrative of the show. Nice. Was that all Downey's decision?
Fun epi. As always, it's great seeing everyone out of their "typical" character. Should we expect more epis like this? While I love seeing everyone step out side their rolls, I do like a good 'ole Leverage Smack Down! The "kiss" was a nice "twist." Costumes we awesome! I've watched the end 3x tonight so far. This thing Nate wants to build... is this why he had Hardison move the money around? And is this what he is hiding? Has Nate finally moved past his anger about losing his son? He seems different this season...less drunk maybe... he isn't going to take Leverage, Inc. legit, is he? We are getting set up for something. BTW... Thank you (or thank TNT) for moving the show back to 9pm EST. It was hard to get home at 8pm to catch the beginning.
Please don't put Kane in a spread collar suit again. It was just a little too spot-on.
Loved the redemption arc. Loved that we saw a broader range of Todd McSweeten. Made me think of Sweeney Todd. Was that deliberate and if so, why?
How long did your heart stop when Kane slid across the roof of the car? It looked very cool, though. And Hutton in that hat and suit made me think of Dan Akroyd in Dragnet.
So here's some speculation: Nate is getting tired of only seeing the bad on people, he's getting outrage fatigue (he's not the only one. This war on women's rights is seriously wearing me down). Nate wants to build something positive like a normal life with Sophie. Therefore he's been building up Hardison, Parker and Eliot's skills to plan the and carry out the cons and meet the clients' needs.
Did you mention somewhere that this season's theme is redemption? I see Adam Baldwin's character coming back and in that episode Eliot finding redemption for his past wet work. Can't think of what Parker and Hardison's redemption would be but Parker has grown to appreciate art and I predict Hardison with run another con but this time not making it too complicated and having a successful Plan A.
Sophie's already done her soul searching and has run the crew so I predict that she and Nate will retire together and turn over the Leverage operation to Parker, Hardison, and Eliot, to run together or separately as they see fit.
That would be a fitting way to end the series if it came to it. It could also inject a new direction for season 6 if there is one. Hardison, Parker, and Eliot would bring in new crew members. I just hope we would see Chaos again.
Wow, this was an awesome episode. Tim and Christian and Beth really knocked this out of the park. Gina and Aldis didn't seem to have much to do, but what they did they did super well.
It was good to see McSweetin again as well. I have to wonder if he really doesn't know that the Leverage crew isn't what they said they were. I'm guessing he hasn't, because of how his father always taught them to see the best in people.
And even though Christian was given a lot of meat to chew in this one, Eliot really more or less sat this one out.
I was really digging the "Life on Mars" vibe that being set in the 70s lent it(and technically a little bit of the 80's too, so I guess "Ashes to Ashes" vibed in there as well).
Was there any trepidation about dealing with the D.B. Cooper story? Was there any concern that it may touch on the real D.B. Cooper story, or be proven wrong at some point? It seems implausible that he could have bought a farm with the money since none of the bills ever turned up in circulation.
No questions here. Thanks for jerking us around by pairing up Christian and Beth in the flashback. On the one hand, I am grateful to have seen what I know already exists in proper action, and on the other it makes me sad.
It's a shame you won't channel that into a much more interesting Parker/Eliot relationship, but let's just stick her with Hardison so there's no spark or believability at all.
I'm tired of hearing the brother/sister excuse where E/P is concerned. If you have chemistry like that with your sibling, please seek help now.
Overall, it was an awesome episode. But anytime there's minimal Hardison ego sucking the air out of the room, it's a pretty good time.
I'll admit I was apprehensive about this one, as all I'd seen was the promo. But then McSweeten popped up and I was intrigued. I know you often say you try not to be Grey's Anatomy and have your fans suffer emotional trauma each episode, but I do enjoy when there's some powerful stuff in an episode and to me, this one had plenty. I enjoyed all the twists, the storyline had me following every word, and yes..tears were shed at the end. It's also the first time I've felt some hope towards what Nate is up to and not blind fear/panic. Also, thank you for the brief (yet wonderful) moment of almost-but-not-quite Parker/Eliot, lol. How much fun did all of the cast have in getting to try out these different roles? Did any of them go into research mode to make sure their speech and actions were appropriate to the time period?
And somewhat off-topic - being born in the late 80's, were moustaches really that gigantic back then? Wow.
II've love to say it was an awesome episode, but despite flight attendant Beth, I didn't really like it. Finding out what it was about, all I could think was that out was going to suck. Using a real life case like that would make it a bad episode, in at least two possible ways. 1. They solve it, but the theory wasn't the greatest, or 2. They keep it unsolved, proving that Nate is less than great. Also, I found the reveal of who cooper was not the least bit surprising.
Thank you for doing this, because I had no idea what/who a D.B. Cooper was before this.
Now, a question. What was the reasoning behind doing this thing with the Cooper incident?
Bex - being born in the 70s, I can emphatically say YES. Mustaches were all that, even into the 80s. Please google Burt Reynolds and Magnum PI for empirical evidence. Or see my dad, who still wears the one he got started back in the day. ;)
have you gotten any feedback from FBI personnel about this episode? wonder how they feel about your take on the case... and is it remotely possible that your version of the story is actually true? did you research the stewardess who spoke to Cooper?
So, this whole episode exists just for that slow-mo car stunt, right?
(OK, I am totally on board with using recaptcha to supplement OCR, and the new thing where we're ID'ing photos, no prob - except that the non-OCR word that they're actually checking is completely illegible. I think I went through 20 words before I found one I could read)
I just have to wonder if, whenever any of the cast saw themselves in the 70s attire, they felt like they were seeing what their parents (or an aunt or uncle)looked like at that time. Kinda like a "omg I look just like my dad/mom in that old picture on the mantle at home" vibe goin on there.
I gotta admit I was concerned about how you would solve a real life cold case, and I was not disappointed at all.
One of my favorite episodes of any season. I really liked the heart of this one. That's why I love this show. Fingers crossed for the season 6 pickup.
To be honest, I was feeling a bit iffy with the beginning of this season, i just didn't feel like it matched up with past seasons. But this episode really did it for me! From the genius writing and directing to the stylish 70's costumes!
Huge props to Nadine Hader for costumes, as well as the set dressers and hair stylist/makeup artists on this one!! I especially loved Beth's hair. Thanks for the S&H car hood slide - it was worth showing again in the flashback.
Question: Has McSweeten finally given up his crush on Parker? Or was he just distracted by his father's illness?
Comment: I certainly see a parallel between Nate's weariness of seeing the bad in people and your weariness in researching the worst behavior in people. It makes sense for Nate to want to find his higher self. You seem to be working on that too, John. Well done.
Thank you for the desk-lamp line. I had to laugh, mostly because I have a co-worker going through exactly that. You don't want to know the hoops for requisitioning a new office printer. (I will say, however, Leverage had helped me appreciate the reasoning behind some of them).
And can I just say I love the whole Parker-McSweeten thing. His blind-spot for her really is sweet (pun intended), given that he clearly isn't as clueless as he sometimes seems.
(Oh, and the captcha thing? I just went for an eye-exam that caused less strain than those things. Seriously.)
Parker. Love that look. Can we have more flashback episodes? I loved the WWII ep, too. How about...a Prohibition episode?
Asking Parker-aka-20-lbs-of-crazy "Do I seem crazy to you?": Whose idea was that? Was that what DB actually said to the stewardess?
Eliot/Parker fan here. *waves* Thank you muchly! So, so much!
Explaining Eliot's hair. Undercover, lol.
Aw, poor wee!McSweeten!! "But I won't find any lost dogs." Awwwww!! He hasn't changed a bit! He's just like his dad - he believes that Agent Hagen is really an FBI agent because she's a good person.
Are all those "real" photographs composites? They look...odd. Just something about them.
So the info on Daniel Cooper that Hardison and Steve found. Was that Steve? If it was Hardison, then Steve is a really, really good liar. If it was Steve, then he wanted to be caught. So why the gun at the end?
This episode. I liked it. It was different (not the time thing, but different as in, it was a "find/catch the bad guy" episode, instead of a "screw the bad guy" ep), but I liked it. It reminded me of Cold Case for some reason (maybe because you mentioned that unit in the episode).
This is my first time commenting so let me just say I love this show and everything about it and it will be a sad, sad day when it ends(fingers crossed that it won't be just yet). ok, now the question who's pet theory was this? Your's, the whole writers room's, or just one pulled from the pool?
I sat there yelling at the screen, saying "Kiss her! Kiss her! Kiss her now!!" And then they did. I knew they could hear my encouragement!
Every con is a chess game to Nate, but this seemed more like a jigsaw puzzle with a lot of lost piece - and Nate still managed to put all the pieces into place.
Is it going to be a problem now that McSweeten knows where the Teams offices are? If he continues to believe in the best in everyone, he won't over think it. But what would prevent him from going back there and stumbling upon them in the middle of a con?
I would like to know how much of the DB story was factual, how much was extrapolated from facts, and how much was just plain made up by a bunch of tired, drunken writers just hopping a ride on the fun train?
Did Kane cut his hair for this episode (it looked pretty short) or was that a wig in some scenes?
Final question. Which did Kane spend more time practicing: sliding over that car hood or kissing Beth?
Fantastic job yet again! LOVED it! Just one question...Oliver Schmidt..? Who is he? Did I blink and miss a reference in an earlier season/episode, or is this one of the examples of an episode being played out of order? Thanks
I enjoyed it but man was the "big reveal" of who DB Cooper was telegraphed.
A few questions though.
1: Can I assume that like most versions that paint him in a heroic light the bomb was fake?
2: 90% certain Mcsweeten's father knew. But when did he know?
3: When she read the note was it intentional that she wound up covering the i and j with her fingers so the note read "You are being hacked" instead of "You are being hijacked"?
"I want to build something," she said mockingly. I hope this isn't that 'franchise' idea people have been kicking around. That would mean the team would be splitting up since they would have to oversee the different "con cells". And I don't want that.
On a more positive note, Parker and McSweeten - I so want to see them working together more often. How many seasons could we get of McSweeten not knowing that Parker isn't really FBI?
Loved the pseudo-Parker/Eliot pairing. Gonna have to rewatch it to catch everything.
Excellent episode! While I agree with others that the reveal was not particularly surprising, I didn't mind at all. It was still lots of fun, and Beth Riesgraf was stunning (and frighteningly good, as usual). Fred Ward is always a joy to see, too.
Two questions:
1 - the photos. First one is clearly a composite, with Gerald Downey's face pasted in - but who is the other guy? Looks vaguely like (again, a paste-in) the guy from the other photo - the stewardess and her husband. Was the second photo (of the married couple) one of the real stewardesses involved in the case? If yes, cool, and was legal clearance a problem? If not, why go through so much Photoshop trouble, rather than having a Hutton/Kane and Riesgraf/Kane photos, since they were already established as the alter egos?
2 - a culture question (foreigner here): I know that tally-ho is a hunting/flying term which means that - respectively - a fox or aircraft was spotted. But is the accompanying gesture something that is generally related to the tally-ho or just father-son code?
I don't think McSweeten Sr knew his partner was really DB. If he did, he would have told his son himself (even without revealing DB's identity) that he found and released DB, to prevent McSweeten Jr from wasting his life on the case.
Finally, my vote for a Prohibition episode! Seriously, you HAVE TO!
Nice coverage of the Cooper case---I liked the resolve, especially since it involved Fred Ward, one of my sincerest cinemacrushes of all time.
Loved seeing this side of McSweeten. Interesting that he didn't blink (or seem to blink) at Parker's unorthodox ways of getting the files--there are hidden depths to him.
One wonders if he knows the team isn't kosher, but also knows they're on the side of the angels (mostly)--like father, like son?
I've always loved the D.B. Cooper story. Was the theory that the stewardess was involved an actual theory from the FBI/historians or was it something entirely conceived by the writers?
Re: the "mystery," I didn't think they were hiding the ball too hard. Fred Ward certainly looked suspicious very early on when he and Hardison were working, and there were other clues. And really, it didn't matter - the episode held up as a really great story whether the mystery reveal was a surprise or not.
Seriously, this is one of my favorite Hutton performances of the entire series. We're talking, top 2 or 3. (12 Step and Maltese Falcon are up there too for me.)
QUESTION 1: Amazing scene with Nate and Sophie at the end. Sophie said that she saw Nate as Odysseus -the hero. Was that flattery or a true insight into how Sophie sees Nate?
Assuming Sophie was being honest, what a great way to weave in some insight into the two of them. We know he sees himself in the worst possible light, but its interesting that she sees him in the most favorable light. It certainly helps explain why Sophie would stay with Nate despite his issues (cause sometimes love alone just isn't enough).
QUESTION 2: How do you view Sophie's tendency to romanticize? Character flaw or character saving grace?
QUESTION 3: Did anyone consider trying to find an actual pay phone for the background in the scene with little Todd and Daddy Pete? (Todd must have called Pete from somewhere.) Probably not an easy task these days.
QUESTION 4: How hard was it to re-create the inside of an airplane from the 70s?
QUESTION 5: What was the process for getting Fred Ward and Ronnie Cox?
QUESTION 6: You could have introduced the team to the mystery in a lot of different ways, but it added a nice emotional element for this to be the dad of someone we know. How did you/Chris/writers decide to use McSweeten in this one?
Ok, I have to assume that was a mini-shout out to the few of us who want to see Parker and Eliot together? Fully realizing they were portraying other people, they still had great chemistry. A few weeks ago I guessed that Nate's big secret is that he is trying to expand the team - make all of them strong and confident enough to lead their own crews and go to more places and help more people - this week seemed to confirm that - am I close?
First of all, let me just get this off my chest: I will never, EVER understand Elliiot/Parker shippers. Ever. They did just fine at playing the roles tonight, but Hardison/Parker is pure Nirvana. They're so perfect together, I don't know how it's possible not to root for them.
Okay. Moving on . . .
NICE twist! I did not see that coming. It's especially funny that Stephanie, played by Parker, came up with the exact same idea that Parker would have been sure to come up with at the end.
Lovely, grace-filled moment with the son when he made his decision. My mom at that moment: "I LOVE THIS SHOW!" As I said to her, Cooper was sort of Neal Caffrey without the actual identification and sentencing. :-)
I have to say the "Nate goes all mysterious at the end of the episode" is getting a little rote, but at least there was something new this time -- the part where Nate wants to build something was a nice touch.
Finally, nice 'staches, boys. :-D And GREAT Bo Duke hood slide from Kane!
Cassandra, I agree that was some pretty great chemistry we saw, but it wasn't between Parker and Eliot. Beth Riesgraf and Christian Kane were portraying two completely different characters in those scenes.
Which was a lot of fun to watch.
And speaking of fun...in my imagination, there is now a Leverage Network. Hurley and Peggy have a sitcom. Tara and the dashing thief from the Girls Night Out Job star on a sexy drama. And in the middle of the night, the Leverage Network airs reruns of an AWESOME 70s cop show.
No specific questions this time out, but I am really looking forward to learning how this episode came about.
Beth in that 1970's flight attendant outfit was gorgeous. Major props to hair, makeup, and wardrobe on the whole 70s look.
My question is how awkward or weird was it for Christian and Beth to do the kissing scene? I know they are professional but still it had a to be a little strange, no?
Loved this episode. I found the line "He did bring D. B. Cooper to justice" wonderfully evocative.
I also applaud the choice of having Elliot play Cooper in the past (for one thing it "establishes" credibility on how he could manage to survive the jump), though I'm surprised you didn't pull something like what you did in Rashamon Job where you had somebody long haired who could have but not quite been Elliot in the original telling of the story, though I guess that might have given away the game, and I suppose the flashback was based on how the Stewardess would want people to imagine Cooper to look.
I do have one question though, is it just me or has the guy who is playing McSweeten put on some weight? It seems like his face is a lot fuller in this episode than I recall it being last time he showed up. Not trying to be nit picky just wondering if my mind is playing tricks on me or not....
What a great episode! Especially Beth in the 70s makeup, hair, and flight attendant uniform. Dang she looked good!
One comment though... What's up with Parker and Hardison? All of a sudden they're dating, and then that was it... Other than one or two other short scenes we haven't seen any interaction between the two at all! Sad day. That's half the reason I watch this show! It's such a realistic and relatable relationship! It's so much fun to watch them be their dorky selves and then suddenly things get real, and we see their real emotional side. Great stuff! But I miss it... And it's not just them, there's been hardly any interaction between the team! This episode they were all split up. There was interaction in the flash back, but that wasn't actually them... And the Christian and Parker kiss was a little awkward... Like she was cheating on Hardison or something! Ha. I just wish there was more emotion rather than just action. I felt like it was pretty well balanced last season, but this one has been a bit off... Still great stuff! Just think it could be a bit better...
Ok, all the Parker-Hardison fans need to chill a little. Not everyone thinks they are meant to be, and welcome to America where we are all entitled to our own opinions. There are a [very] few of us who would prefer Parker and Eliot to be together, but Rogers has made that clear that is it never going to happen so let us just enjoy our fantasy of what we would like to see. Don't like, too bad; don't understand it, you don't have to. FYI - we look at you the same for thinking Parker and Hardison are a good romantic match. (Sorry John for the snark, it needed to be said.)
I need like burning that '70s cop show with Hutton and Kane, followed in the lineup by Aldis in a remake of "Shaft." Make that happen, please.
So much love for this ep! Ronnie Cox, FRED WARD!!! And Kane playing a young Fred Ward … I can't even … On our imaginary TV lineup, let's add a TV-move, a teamup with Remo Williams and Eliot Spencer.
McSweeten. McSWEETEN!!! I've always loved our sweet, goofy McSweetie, but Gerald Downey just took the character leaps and bounds above anything I'd ever imagined. When he's standing before his father's chair and does thatlast little "tally-ho," I teared up. I TEARED UP OVER McSWEETEN!!! Damn you all.
I also loved Peter McSweeten. He could so easily have been a caricature, with his "I'd like to add one more word … compassion" and insistence on seeing the good in everybody, but he became a lovely counterpoint to Nate. Kudos to Cox for grounding Peter, and for helping to round out Todd.
AND WHY THE HELL DOESN'T NADINE HADERS HAVE AN EMMY??? The clothes. Oh, dear God, THE CLOTHES. (BTW, your actor humans make polyester and wide collars look good. Just sayin'.)
The entire crew did a fabulous job – the set designers, hair and makeup, the camera and lighting folk who gave us a 1970s cop show look, and Joe Lo Duca. Every time we flashed back, the music put me right smack dab in the middle of a Quinn/Martin production. Honestly, Mannix or Barnaby Jones could have popped out of a door at any time, and would have been right at home.
I love you people.
Just a couple of questions.
1) Any particular reason so little Sophie? Eliot I can understand, because Kane spent so much time as Steve. Just wondering about Sophie.
2) D.B. Cooper. Why this storyline, and what in the ep was orange box and ledger?
3) Todd. Now that we have seen him as a fully fledged human being, how does this change any future use of him as one half of the bumbling duo of Taggert-McSweeten?
4) Whose crossbow was that in the van?
5) Oh, the car slide. THE CAR SLIDE. Were you on set that day? How crazy did it make you?
More to add after a rewatch. I like that, at first, Nate was identifying with Peter McSweeten and his single-minded pursuit of Cooper, but wound up empathizing more with Todd McSweeten when he took the Cooper case as his own... a son burdened by the legacy of a late father. It's interesting to watch that turn.
And Kudos to Gerald Downey for that scene towards the end when he's holding the Odyssey, and looking down at his father's chair. Personally, I never felt more alone in my life than the days right after my father died, and Mr. Downey really captured that sort of numb, lost feeling.
One last thought: It was nice to see Ronny Cox in this. He's a quality actor, and always brings a lot to a role.
Just a question in general... Hardison is probably my favorite character in the show, but it seems like he has been out of focus for a lot of this season, and to me it seems like the writers are trying to avoid having him in the spotlight, to be comic relief at the moment, and like some have said about his relationship with Parker, we really haven't had any interaction between them this season. Is it because of the secret that Hardison is keeping with Nate? It feels like he is trying to distract himself the times he has been in Season 5 so far. When can we expect some more Hardison moments?
P.s. I also felt that the kiss scene between Beth and Christen was a bit awkward. Everything else was great, and how they played it was great, but it felt like it was only there to please fans of Parker/Elliot.
The Anonymous at 9:09 is me, just wanted to add something that I really liked,
In the commentary of the Van Gogh job, Aldis Hodge explained how he tried to channel Glover a bit when he was in the flashback, I noticed Christen Kane did that too in this episode, I thought that was fantastic. :)
So no one has yet mentioned what I thought was the interesting possibilities raised at the end of this ep. Nate and McSweeten Sr. agree that the important thing is not to catch DB Cooper, but to keep McSweeten Jr. from expending his life on the same obsession.
Then they _just happen_ to resolve the DB Cooper case in a way that frees McSweeten Jr. to live his life. The most obvious intrepretation is that what was revealed to us was what actually happened, and that McSweeten Jr. made a free choice to let Fred Ward stay free, so that the world at large still thinks the mystery is unsolved. But how about:
1) The reveal is true, but Nate and Ward arranged to let it fall out the way it did for McSweeten Jr.'s benefit, or
2) The reveal is _not_ true, the original DB Cooper died in the jump, and Nate and Ward set up the whole theory to get McSweeten Jr. his resolution...
I like the fact that the script left these possibilities open...
I'd like to thank you for explaining a while back about the new writers working on the show. Season 4 seemed a bit off, but they have really found their groove this season. I think this is my favorite season so far. It will totally break my heart if this is the last season. Leverage is the only show I make time to watch.
Kane totally rocked the 70's porn star moustache. and the slide across the car was awesome! how many takes did they have to do of that? can we have the less than perfect clips in a gag reel on the dvd? everybody involved did an incredible job on this ep. thanks to all of you for giving us such an awesome show to look forward to every week!
Good episode although I don't want to offend anyone but I really didn't like it. To me it was too simple, we all saw the bad guy so early on. I actually thought they were married before the hijacking and they were in it together. It's a good thing you guys are not crime writers (no offense if anyone is). However there were great points. TH was great! Here we were thinking CK was good with kids the scene between him and a young McSweeten was amazing! The costumes were mind blowing! Thank you for the Eliot Parker combo it was nice. I however am not a fan of either Parker Eliot or Parker Hardison not everyone on the same TV show has to end up with each other. You are not a soap opera or a sitcom. I was expecting Sophie and Nate from the first episode in season one but everyone else not so much. I liked the irony that it was Eliot who told them in the beginning that the jump was impossible but at the end he was the one who actually managed it. (well not him but you get my drift) Loved that McSweeten was so excited to see the crossbow. Q1: Why 4 parachutes? Was that real? Did he take all four when he jumped? Q2: Tell me you didn't let CK run on the roof - car slide ok roof top not! Q3: If Nate doesn't believe in redemption does that mean he still sees his team as thieves? What of Eliot, still sees him as a killer who can't be redeemed? Q4: How was the stunt set up for Eliot's jump of the plane? Did he just jump back? It looked liked the wind carried him side ways. Q4: Hasn't Leverage thought us that when you look a person in the eye you are lying? Or is it only grifters who notice the difference? Q5: Nate tells Sophie at the end "do you remember when I said ..." if I remember correctly he said that at the hospital after they were blown up, Sophie had not yet joined them. Not sure were the question in this one is, just pointing it out. I vote for a flash back to the 20's if you are taking request for season 6. Thank you for bringing us not only Leverage but a place to discuss the show we love as well. Looking forward to next week! Was that a monkey I saw in Sophie's hand? Are we finally getting the sapphire monkey story? You said somewhere that it would happen in season 5. This question will probably be answered by us before you get around to answering the blog as we watch it next week but I couldn't help myself.
1A)For some reason, as soon as he said his wife was on the plane, I thought, "He's D.B. Cooper. They were in on it together." I was half right. And there was a sort of Firefly twang in the music when Reynolds entered (Yes, I see Firefly everywhere including the fact that he was named Reynolds although I know that was probably a coincidence) ...was that from the D.B. Cooper theme song later in the episode when McSweeten, Sr. returns to Portland? B) Did the crew write that song for this episode because I can't seem to find it anywhere?
2) Is this an entire meta episode dedicated to explaining why McSweeten Jr. hasn't caught on to the team? Did that factor into what you wrote in the script, his "lost dog" characterization?
3)Same thing other people noticed with Sophie (I read the other questions ahead of time, aren't you so proud) It seems like being such a fangirl, she'd want to meet D.B Cooper. Is there a Sophie heavy episode coming up in the future that she had to shoot? There was also very little Hardison as well, what made it work out that way?
4)Please don't tell me that "Saying goodbye to the people you care about always is [tough] is a foreshadowing reference. Is that the theme of the season?
5) I didn't pick it up the first time but there were huge clues about Stephanie and Steve, as in her not having Reynolds as a last name, indicating they met after the hijacking. And "all of our information came from her" that one I did catch.
6)Did Nate!McSweeten actually notice Parker!Stephanie looking down at the magazine or was that just him looking down at the drawing, I ask because he had a little puppy head cock that indicated he might have noticed something was up.
7)If McSweeten Sr. didn't know about Steve Reynolds why'd he offer him the job at the FBI? Same question for if he did know.
8)Was the not cutting his hair just a joke for Eliot or McSweeten trying to cover up for Reynolds/Cooper?
9) I know you probably not going to answer, but I have to ask. Did McSweeten Sr. ever figure it out and if so when?
10) Did Reynolds' wife really have nightmares about the hijacking or was that just a show he put on for the FBI? It seems like she could have really been traumatized even though it ended well for her, like dreaming Steve died, etc.
11) Why did Eliot!Reynolds encourage Nate!McSweeten to keep looking for D.B. instead of quietly steering him elsewhere?
12)Was Eliot!Reynolds hair styled/curled so that it look like it grew and shortened? I know possibilities of a wig were mentioned earlier.
13) Unfortunately, the face was obscured, did Eliot!Reynolds actually do his stunt jump into the boxes? I could tell he did the car slide, nice shout out to Dukes of Hazzard/Starsky and Hutch.
14) Did McSweeten Sr. know about Daniel Cooper (the real one) before Nate told him?
15) On a meta note, were there any of our earlier villains that could have been redeemed? They seem pretty cold hearted other than the Carnival Job guy and Hurley.
16) Did Eliot!Reynolds tamper with Novak's memory, say implying features that weren't right, etc etc? Whatever happened to that sketch that Novak made?
17) So far, Nate flat-out told Hardison what is going on, implied it to Eliot, and told Sophie, how exactly does he intend to broach this subject with Parker, who could be stated as the one who needs the team the most, being the least apt to deal with society and in someways the most childlike (someways the most nuts) and trusting of Nate. She is the first one to jump on a crazy plan bandwagon.
18) Can Nate both build and destroy at the same time?
P.S. For someone who asked above, Oliver (?) Schmidt was the guy they were going to go after before this case came up. Are we going to see that case or is it going to be one of the two in three that we don't?
Absolute favorite so far this season! I figured out where you were going near the end and really loved it. And Agent McSweetums!!! So glad he was there. Just perfect Leverage-y history-y fun. Wish it happened that way in real life.
IMForeman, good point about Nate's turn from father to son! This was such a good ep for Nate in so many ways.
Anon @ 8:23, I don't think anyone needs to chill; we're all just having a friendly discussion. I gave my opinion, you gave yours. As you said, welcome to America. ;-)
I Loved everything about this episode. The flashbacks were awesome. Seriously if you ever wanted to do a series set in the seventies with Christian and Tim as FBI agents I'd watch it! It would need a good Rockford fileish theme song.
OMG the kiss!!! I swear that the scenes with Christian and Beth were AMAZING and the kiss was like the icing on the cake. The Chemistry between those two...it makes me wish for Eliot/Parker.. Wliot would know if he should kiss her or bang his head against a brick wall LOL.
It was so much fun seeing Christian play that character. We still got action Christian but we got sweet/cocky/romantic Christian too.
And Mr. Ward!! I love him and the moment he waked on the screen I told my sister... That's who Christian will play! I was sad that there was not a scene with them together at the bar.
Oh and the 'stashes Epic!
Okay Question(s) How much fun was it getting to do this Ep? was this one of the wps that the whole writers room got excited about.
The makeup and Cosutmes were wonderful, was it hard to choose each characters look?
you just dont know how bad I want more of this episode. I may just have to drag out some of my DVD box sets.. Sadly I have no RockfordFiles but I do have some Starsky and Hutch and classic 5-0.
Now if you can only do some take offs of my fave 80's shows... Magnum PI, Simon and Simon, Hardcastle & McCormick, Oh maybe Christian and Beth in a take off on Scarecrow and Mrs King.. HAHA I'll count the Van song with the boys as a Dukes of Hazzard nod.
I'll do anything if you SWEAR not to have Christian with side burns and mustache ever again!!! At least not the side burns please! LOL I have always wondered if it was better with a Eliot/Parker relationship instead of a Hardison/Parker one. I really could have kept on just wondering that. Even though they were different characters in the flashbacks, I just wanted to run screaming! I could only think of them as Eliot/Parker and the brother/sister relationship they have. So it just totally grossed me out, it was like watching and brother/sister kiss! Thanks for wanting electro-shock therapy to get that out of my head! Other than that great job to everyone for another great episode! And thanks for getting Gerald Downey away from his busy commercial schedule to appear again :)!! Need to bring him back for more eps! Also, what is up with all the big stars this season? Ronny Cox, Fred Ward, Treat Williams, etc.? This better not be a "go out with a bang" kind of season. Don't know what I'd do without my LEVERAGE!!!!
Okay, so there was a British cop show in the 70's called McSweeney, which inspired much of the style and feel of Life on Mars.
Now I know 'McSweeten' was a name created ages ago, but did someone in the writers room make a McSweeney/McSweeten reference and that's how the idea was born?
I'm probably reaching, but with the whole 70's thing I can't help but think maybe I'm on to something.
And I loved this episode, because I'm a sucker for redemption stories.
P.S. Was it really "sleeps 90 minutes a day", "grows his own food" "crawled through a billion length tunnel in Yemen (?)" Eliot, who said that that jump couldn't have possible been survived? Seriously?
Okay, the Elliot/Parker kiss was a little weird, I always viewed them as brother and sister, so I turned away on there kiss. The episode was actually pretty entertaining, McSweeney was actually pretty awesome, I think Parker may have a little crush on him, don't get me wrong , I love Parker/Hardison, I think they have the best chemistry on TV, but I wouldn't mind seeing some romantic drama!!!
I thoroughly enjoyed this episode - McSweetie, YAY!
I have to say, when Peter McSweeten goes to talk to Stephanie and Steve Reynolds enters the scene, I knew right then that Steve was the actual hijacker. And when Peter changes his mind and accepts the offer of coffee, I think he suspected Steve also. And after Steve became his partner in the FBI, Peter spent all those years and decades trying to solve the case so as to prove his suspicions about Steve, his partner, wrong.
Zeyneb: when someone jumps out of a plane (skydives), from the plane's perspective, the diver would seem to be pulled to one side because the plane travels faster than the diver does in open sky. Just like if you pushed someone out of a moving car.
Also, I thought that the kiss between Stephanie (Beth) and Steve (Christian) would not have suffered from a bit more awkwardness. Seriously, the dude who hijacks the plane that you were working on, uses you as a hostage and negotiating go-between with the FBI, jumps off said plane mid-flight, and then shows up on your doorstep??? THAT'S. FREAKING. AWKWARD.
My question: Is "IPA 684-2" relevant to a future episode or is it something that was just put up to sell the brew-pub vibe?
@zeyneb: The parachutes was a real thing. It's assumed he asked for four to make it a real possibility he'd force a hostage to jump and thus provide incentive to not rig the chute to fail.
@Oona: I'm not part of the Leverage crew so I can't answer directly but Sophie's answer was actually pretty perfect from my interpretation and if you're familiar with the Odyssey her statement is really not flattering. The concept of "hero" in literature, and especially Greek lit, is less about modern ideas of heroism and is closer to just meaning he was the main character. He also is a very Nate-like character. Both are excessively clever in both good ways and bad and are jealous and wrathful when provoked. Their love of their son sparks both of their tales and is one of the major sources of their problems. Most importantly, though, and one of the reasons the comparison is not flattering for Nate, Odysseus is nearly synonymous with hubris. Nate's self-identification with the sirens seems to be an interesting point for the season arc but it seemed pretty clear to me that the writers knew how spot-on the Odysseus comparison is.
@Anon. "IPA 684-2" is one of the real signs copied direct from the Bridgeport Brewery for the Leverage set. Chris Downey explained it in the set tour during fan con.
At our house, we're really curious about what it was that made you decide to try to tackle DB Cooper.
As to how much we liked it, we're a little conflicted. Myself, I ended up deciding I liked it pretty well, but the two of us who are adults who grew up in the Pacific Northwest hearing all the DB Cooper stories and theories found it a serious challenge to stay with the story right from the beginning, knowing that the mystery has never been solved. Just too hard at times to stay on the fun train.
That said, the clothes and hair styles (mustaches and sideburns included!) and props, environment, mores, AND old TV show references were completely spot on, each and every one. I found it rather scary to be feeling 10 again! I can really see how everyone else who didn't grow up with the mystery would totally love that angle along with everything else that was so cleverly done.
@MZ - good points, and it may very well be that Sophie was going for a complex view that was not so flattering. Her description was fairly flattering though, so I'm wondering how much of the first season Sophie that started out romanticizing Nate is still in there. For me, it's more interesting for her as a character - particularly since we don't see a lot of character moments for her - if a big part of her still does see the white knight.
I read about D.B. Cooper rather recently, so some of the back story seemed rather familiar. However, I did notice several things you modified or left out in your version (which comes under the category of artistic license). My question then is, were there any elements that you wanted to work into the story that just didn't quite fit? I'm kinda assuming that the whole training parachute issue didn't fit your narrative, but were you tempted to massage the titanium on the pin into it somehow?
The British show is actually called "The Sweeney", and starred John Thaw, later to be the unequaled Inspector Morse. "Life on Mars" and especially "Ashes to Ashes" also drew a lot from "Starsky and Hutch" according to the producers.
I really loved this episode; I was afraid I'd seen the twist and emotional payoff come far in advance and yet my heartstrings were still effectively pulled. The whole "he brought him to justice" line...
And can officer McSweeten be more sweet ? I really liked the additional insight we got into his character. It plays a bit into "Good is Dumb" but since he was "Dumb" to start with this was some really Good backstory.
I also really like his father, I don't know how realistic he is but in fiction cops are always idealized tough bastards (i.e. they're tough bastards and that's a good thing) or they're cynical tough bastards (i.e. they're tough bastards and that's terrible but the world sucks so what you gonna do about it). You rarely see FBI agents brazenly making speeches about compassion, and even worse, compassion for the perpetrators. I'm a bit cynical myself so I don't know how realistic that is, but I certainly loved seeing it on screen for once. This is a bit of a political question, but now that I've written that out it reminds me of the appointment of Sotomayor to the Supreme Court, and all the talk on the left about how "empathy" suddenly seemed to be a dirty word for the right. Was that on anyone's mind when the episode was written or am I just making spurious connections out of thin air ?
And just in case you miss one of the previous people asking the question : what was up with the gun at the end ? It was all the more strange that we're supposed to sympathize with the guy, and there he is making off like he considered shooting Nate or something.
Second watch and pretty much the same feelings as the first.
I love GB and AH, but I really didn't care for their line readings. I was so looking forward to this ep, and they had me thinking this might fall way short of expectations when they were 2 of the first 3 in retro mode.
Luckily, it picked straight up from there. There were so many great moments, but I rewatched 4 of them over and over -
First, the slo mo 70s cold case montage! Oooh yeah baby! I would totally watch that Hutton-Kane cop show.
Second, the scene with Hutton and lil' Todd McSweeten about the bike. Wow, so simple and so sweet and touching. Ugh, killed me.
Third, the combined Fred Ward wake speech that shifted into Nate and Parker in the office. Fred Ward really rocked that scene, but then Nate's "working" bit . . . the shift from funny and touching to deadly serious was very effective.
Fourth - the moment where Nate talks McSweeten into letting Steve go. A lot of time, flashbacks add nothing to the show, but this was a great use of flashbacks to build on the narrative, and the way it all related to Nate saying that Pete did bring Steve to justice was really nicely done.
Fifth (OK, I lied, there were five as a think about it) - McSweeten's final Tally Ho, with the bookmark Christmas list and the empty chair. *sniffle*
Have no idea what Nate is building, but I'm still pretty sure you're going to make me want to break up with you when the season is over. You better box up my records!
And in the interest of organization, I'll number my questions.
1)That "it's not cocaine, it's cyanid" bit seemed odd. Was that just a straight riff on 70's cop show dialog or was there a scene missing?
2) Was that a local kid playing little Todd? Did Hutton spend a lot of time with him on set? They seemed pretty natural together.
3) How did Roskin shoot/block that Nate/Parker scene? It looked fantastic.
4) Parker seemed almost worried in that scene with Nate. Was she worried they were gonna get off-the-rails Nate again? He did seem almost in Jimmy-revenge mode there.
RE:Cyanide - I think it was a lampshade hanging/shoutout to all of those ridiculous drug deals on T.V. where people test the merchandise by tasting it, which is the worst thing you could possibly do and not at all true to real life. Like a "Take that, old 70's shows, for making me think cops licked cocaine!"
I really just wanted to say how much I loved that episode. I had never heard of the DB Cooper story until a Journeyman episode a few years ago, and I was super excited to see another take on it.
Like everyone else, I would LOVE to know how much research went into this episode. Did you talk to anyone that was involved in the original case? And since I don't know, did you use the real names of any of the people involved? (I mean, okay, I can google, but then I won't hear your reasons behind what you chose!)
I also wanted to say, I think that was the best American accent I've heard Gina do yet, and the costumes were fantastic.

One of my favorite episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation was "The Inner Light", where Picard-as-Kamin asks his wife Eline permission "to build something". That something was a family.
That is the "build something" that I immediately thought of when Nate asks Sophie that in the end.
Also, how timely to have this episode. I had just been reading about how the latest promising lead didn't go very far.
Could we please have a prequel to this episode on the season 5 DVDs that shows McSweeten asking Hagen for help? There wasn't enough of the two of them in the episode.
Hubby predicted that there was no DB Cooper and that the stewardess took the money, so we were close but not quite. We LOVED the 'staches. I (unfortunately) have many family photos with the men wearing those handlebars. And the DECOR! It was like I was walking into my childhood living room! Hubby was all excited about the Captain's Chair in McSweeten's house because his father had exactly the same one. Kudos all around for that.
Count me as another vote for both the Prohibition episode and the Hutton/Kane '70s cop show.
I also feel relieved and a bit hopeful at Nate's "I want to build something" comment, which means the season is building towards something positive, not "Nate is dying of cancer." Because please, between "Enterprise," "House," and "Sherlock," I am really exhausted of my favorite characters dying or pretending to die.
I thought Eliot/Parker was fine, but then I think Hardison/Parker is also just "fine," rather than "spectacular." I think the Eilot/Hardison bickering/goofing/friendship frankly has a lot more chemistry than Parker with either of them.
DaveMB - for a few minutes at the end, I was *sure* that we were about to get a reveal that they chose to con McSweeten rather than admit defeat, and that Steve was in on the con! Making the job really to save McSweeten and also teach him to still believe in the good in people(established as important in the bicycle scene), not get Cooper. But for me the ending ruled it out: there wasn't even a mysterious look between Nate & Steve, or anything like that that I could spot.
Having said that, this episode was a ton of fun either way. And I too am hopeful about Nate's building something comment at the end!
I was worried (I didn't like Van Gogh episode), but this one was fantastic! Season 5 is, for now, much better than Season 4, and I thought it was great. Only thing that bothers me, is a too little interaction between the Team.
All those years I've watched Leverage, and adored it, I 've been asking myself one question. There's something I still don't understand, so Josh Rogers, please give me that answer, now when I finally found this place. I need it.
1. Shall we, in this Season, finally see members of the Team, to SHOW that they care about Eliot, fear for him, and worry?
I'm not talking about drama, cooing or something like that, though you have pretty much of that in Grave danger job over Hardison. I'm asking to see just a little care, no more than a look, gesture, or frown. It doesn't bother me because I'm CK fan, which I'm not, it would bother me if any other member of the Team was in that position. It totally screams awkward every time they just turn their heads and walk away without showing anything. I know we're supposed to know that they care, but you can say that for many other things, and they are still shown and explained. I will really appreciate if you tell me that will change in the next episodes. Thank you for this place!
Loved the dose of reality regarding "cold case" files. As methods improve so we're able to get DNA profiles from smaller and smaller samples, it also takes less and less to corrupt those samples.
You know, I was expecting this to be a cheesy comedy episode, but instead you got me all choked up over the McSweetens and Steve and Stephanie. I wish you would do a remake with Christian as Starsky and Beth as Hutch. Ooh, and Tim as Captain Dobey and Gina as Huggy Bear. But I don't just have dumb ideas. I have dumb questions too - 1. That hood slide was great. Christian Kane made it look so effortless. Is it really that simple? Do you just have your extremely attractive stuntman/actor launch himself at an available car? Or is there more to setting it up? 2. So Hardison knows what Nate is doing but maybe not why, Sophie knows why but maybe not what, Eliot knows something but not much, and Parker knows nothing. Why the patchwork secrecy? Just Nate's sicko need to control people, or is there another reason Nate is letting out these squirts of information?
In my gushing over this ep, I almost forgot to send my love to Joe LoDuca. The music was just flat out OUTSTANDING. Not just the 70s stuff, but also the stuff in present day. One of my favorite episodes for soundtrack.
I really liked this episode. The Stephanie/Steve relationship was weird in a sweet way or sweet in a weird way. Either way I liked it. The 70's cop montage was top notch. I noticed that you only see Eliot at the beginning and he doesn't really take part except for when Christian was doing the flashbacks. I guess they didn't need a hitter. Did you know from the start that you were going to make the Stephanie/Steve love story or that you were going to have a love interest for D.B. Cooper? I really hope you guys come back for another season.
Why is Sophie always some random ancillary character in the flashback episodes?
And my honest criticism is this: I really wanted to like the episode. The airplane scenes had a nice flashback feel to them but ultimately I felt like there were too many characters and the story moved along too quickly for me to follow. I am by no means stupid but I had to rewind the episode to understand how we went from searching for D.B. Cooper to watching flashback Nate and Eliot chase down a bunch of random criminals. The fact that flashback Eliot was SO randomly plopped into the story made the twist too easy to spot early on. I figured either something was up or you guys were trying too hard force some Eliot action into the episode because you know how the ladies swoon over him. Or whatever it is they do.
And the message was so forced. The things about seeing the good in people? When the message is that forced, it makes me picture the moment in the writers room when ya'll either shrugged and said "eh. good enough." or patted yourselves on the back unwarrantably.
It actually pains me to say it because I was so looking forward to the episode based on the clip I saw on itunes with Beth and the hijakcer. Seemed well done. Twas not the case. My neck hurts from shaking my head disapprovingly for so long as I watched it.
Things I did like: Sophie being obsessed with D.B. Nice character moment from her. We don't get that too often from her character. And Nate calling himself a siren was actually a nice moment. Poetic. Beth looked great in the flashback garb. The mustaches were... both horrible and hilarious.
Mostly I liked the IDEA of this episode. But sometimes I can't help but wonder how it's simultaneously so hard to get a job in television and yet the people doing it can't seem to figure out how the hell to do it well. I know that's harsh. But this show could be great. But so often falls short. I realize your excuse is that it's not meant to be taken seriously. But even so. TONS of lost potential here.
I loved the episode and would love to learn how to do that car slide; I suppose it's mostly letting inertia do the work.
One comment/question: having family members with pancreatic cancer, I thought that the portrayal of someone with very little time left was somewhat unrealistic. I get that it was necessary for the story, but in my experience, terminal cancer patients appear quite a bit sucker. and i'm totally nitpicking here on what is now a fave ep for me. Ymmv
Great episode. Minor gripe about the Stockholmish romance, but otherwise, yep, great episode. It was funny (and a little sad) seeing Nate play someone who saw the best in people.
1: Awwwwwwwww, poor McSweetums. Is there a way you could give the actor a hug from me? 2: Is there a way you could have moustache!Eliot and moustache!Nate in future episodes? Both men were sporting epic facial hair, although Hardison wasn't too bad either. 3: Did Oliver Schmidt have a moustache? 4: Did Daddy McSweetums know about the whole 'DB Cooper is his partner' thing?
Matthew - nice cover "buddy." I can tell you're not a CK fan, just a random "dude" whose only criticism of the show is that no one wuvs Eliot enough.
The idea that Eliot doesn't get fussed over has been discussed to death in past. It basically boils down to this - it's just not the tenor of the show to have a lot of "team anxiety over character in peril" moments. I would go so far as to say that Devlin and Rogers consider it to be hacky.
They did it with Hardison once in 5seasons and sort-of-but-not-really with Nate in Season 1 where he got shot, when Sophie fussed (everyone else was focused on the con) but then she got pissed at him right away, too (and Nate gets shot and beat up a LOT).
Eliot's basically a super hero (except when it comes to carnival rides - where Hardison worried about him). No fussing required.
It's pretty much a given at this point that everyone on the team cares for everyone else.
I'm proudly say that I've guessed who's the D.B. Cooper before it's revealed!
Anyway I LOVE the setting! And you made Parker & Eliot kiss! Not sure how to react with that. Sophie got a very little screen time on this episode though.
Little comment, I don't think there should be many typing necessary at the opening of the episode. It's like running a program on a data script. What do you need typing for? But it's good to see McSweetheart!! He looks awful though lol. It also shows that FBI are not better than con man? He took 40 years, Nate only need like what? Two days top? Or.. Peter has found out but decided to keep silent. I guess we'll never know :|
Whoever did Beth & Gina's makeup on the 70's, I love you! Beth's eye makeup is especially pretty!
And please.. all endings start to be puzzles. Next episode would be better if some of the pieces connect. I don't understand Nate's mind :(
It's always nice to rant in here. You make Leverage much more enjoyable to watch <3
Can only echo the questions about how much research you guys did for this - huge kudos to costume, make up and the prop department because the 70's settings were awesome.
That farewell scene by McSweeten with the book, the christmas list and the tally ho wave was beyond great. So well acted, so well filmed. Dammit, you made me sniffle!
I also liked that Parker has enough of a connection to McSweeten that she was the one who brought him to Nate. Nice touch.
What was it like for Tim Hutton and Ronny Cox to be working together again after thirty years? I love "Taps" and I about lost it when Nate went in to interview Peter McSweeten for the first time. :D
I didn't have time to read all of the post for this epi and I don't know if anyone has already asked this, but did Beth and Christian get the kiss on the first try? If no, how many times did it take? And if it took a few, do we get to see the bloopers on the season 5 DVD? I love the outtakes, pranks, and behind the scenes things y'all do. Keep it up, give us MORE!
Bunch o'stuff...where to start. It was great to see McSweetin and get a little of his backstory. Yes, the ending was fairly predictable, but I know how Romeo and Juliet ends, too...doesn't interfere with my enjoyment of a good performance.
I think everyone needs to face at least one fact: Christian has chemistry with anything with legs as well as a number of inanimate objects. That being said, I strongly agree with Cassandra (of course, if you're going to reference post-Troy you pretty much have to agree with someone named Cassandra) and I think anyone who sees the Eliot/Parker dynamic as sibling-esque has...let's just say an imperfect understanding of sibling-ness. Yes, Mr. Rogers, this includes you. To me, the ep was merely confirmation of how much better the Eliot/Parker dynamic is than Hardison/Parker. For one thing, he consistently treats her better than Hardison does. At least he does her the courtesy of listening to her and taking her seriously.
If Nate sees himself as a siren, that works interestingly into the conversations and assignments he's been working with on all the team members. Does he plan to give each of them, in some sense, the fulfillment of their heart's desire? And what are those desires? Will that be the different forms of their redemptions?
Was the hood slide filmed in real time? It's obviously the case that it was really Tim and Christian, not stunties, but did they do it at full speed? Of course it's kind of hard to control the speed of a slide that has to cover a defined distance, physics being what it is, but was all of it shot RT?
It's been interesting to watch Eliot and Parker call in their markers, "We're going to do this because I must do this". is each of the team going to do that over the course of the season?
I hope Todd finds a lot of lost puppies.
When do you find out about renewal? Shall we keep those cards and letters coming?
My personal opinion on the whole Hardison/parker/eliot is that the whole relationship between Hardison and Parker is about two people growing up and maturing together, while Parker and Eliot, more sense the Long way down job is about I understand your situation. I see there relationship is siblingy because one of the banter between them, it is a lot like a big brother to a little sister. but also, for example when Parker goes to Eliot for advice in the French Connection Job, Eliot is hesistent because he is annoyed, but always gives in, Because no Big Brother is going to say no when the younger sibling is troubled, and needs advice. (although having Hardison basically ignore her in that episode was a very much IMO only for the plot, because Parker going to Eliot was very obiviously so that they could add the scene later on about Eliot helping coach her through the food critic part.)
Christian Kane does have Chemistry with anything that moves. I am not going to argue that at all.
Hardison and Parker still having some growing to do, but honestly in my opinion, it is as plain as day that those two care for each other very much so. But like I said earlier, right now it appears that they are learning more about the relationship as they go, and that they are learning more about pritorities as they go, Parker and Money and Hardison and his toys.
I can see a moment between Hardison and Eliot though, where Eliot gives him more advice on dating and romance, making a bonding moment between them two. Hardison is my favorite character, but something that has been established about him frequently is that he takes things too far, or that he is pretty immature until things get serious, then he buckles down. So having him and Parker (the emotionally unstable girl that is slowly learning the difference between right and wrong, that is also pretty immature) mature together seems to be the way everything is progressing. and IMO it is how Pardison(or Harker, using pairing names in really interesting (^_^))
I was hoping they'd send McSweeten after Oliver Schmidt--you know, as something for him to focus on, since the DB Cooper mystery was taken care of--but I liked the Nate/Sophie scene as the end bit.
Anonymous, I'd give you the "maturing together" thing if it seemed to be two-sided. Parker is actively trying to grow, Hardison is brushing past her pretty constantly. From my point of view, he treats her abysmally. It's like he got the shiny new toy and it doesn't do what he thought it would, but when he needs to pretend something's a girlfriend, he's got one of those, so he hauls it out and makes it do stuff he likes.
To me it looks like Hardison is becoming more like Nate in all the bad ways, and he'd still miss the Job if he were up late with the newest version of whatever game.
I'm not going to say that Hardison and Parker don't like each other. It's just that it's an afterthought for him and an alien world for her. It takes more than one person to bridge that gap and I see him doing bupkis now that he's "got" the kewpie doll.
I stand by my original reaction that if Parker were my friend, I would tell her to run as fast as possible away from a man who treats her as Hardison does. That reaction gets stronger the more I see of them.
Also, banter is traditionally the method of communication between a couple...it is NOT a trait of siblings.
The other thing is that this is pulp...good pulp. And Eliot and Parker are clearly the pulp couple: the girl damaged by an uncaring world through which she's found her way, and the guy who's seen the worst the world has to offer and come out with a pained loving nature -- protecting himself carefully but unable to avoid sheltering the broken people he comes to love.
I guess banter is not the right word, The word I should have used was bicker. and that is a trait of siblings (argueing about stupid things).
Well, I must say a personal opinion, is that the character development of Hardison has really lacked in Season 5.
Hardison in my eyes, and using a little of what you said, he got this shiny new toy and not that it doesn't do what he thought, it's I finally got it, but what do I do now? He is learning as he goes, and in Season 5 he was treated as nothing more then Comic Relief, except for the one scene in the Premiere.
To explain a little bit more about the maturing together thing that I said earlier, Hardison is a very vocal person, and because of that a lot of his immaturity shows. Parker, the girl damaged by the world and not a person that understands many normal emotions, hides it and only really comes when it is something that she has always been passionate about, a.k.a. money. I think that the relationship between Nate and Hardison is more then anything Nate trying to be a positive influence on Hardison and pushing him to not make his mistakes. I know I am just gasping at straws, but Hardison comes off as the type of person that never had a serious relationship before Parker, and that this is something alien to him too. But also I want to reitierate that I feel that a lot of this season, Hardison's character has taken hits so that others can shine in his place. I finally say the preview and some pictures from the next episode that looks to fix that in my eyes.
and if anything, Parker was maturing so that she felt comfortable being in a relationship, and it is Hardison's turn to mature into making it a more serious and meaningful one.
This has been kind of fun having this nice little discussion.
I hope all that makes sense, and it has been fun seeing your point of view. (^_^)
I wasnt going to post but after reading other comments i have to ask u Rogers - did u expect a lot of parker/hardison/eliot posts? Afterall, i remember u saying in reference to the 12-step job that it was the hug that lit up the message boards. did u pair eliot & parker partially to tease and/or see the reactions?
My preference on the Parker/Hardison and Eliot/Parker thing would be for Parker to pull a Holly Hunter from Broadcast News and kick 'em both to the curb.
As someone with no dog in this fight, I have to say, CK and BR have chemistry. Their chemistry was more smoldery than anything I've ever seen from Hardison and Parker.
Of course, Hardison and Parker are played as more innocent/first love and so smoldery is not exactly what's written for them, at least not at this point, but it seems to me like physical/sexual chemistry comes across whether it's the subject of a scene or not, and I haven't seen that from them.
Maybe it'll be there, but I have to say that I enjoy them much better being playful and fun together, like best friends, than I do being serious and romantic.
That doesn't mean I want her with Eliot instead, just that the actors seem to bring out different things in each other.
No questions here. I just wanted to express glee over the whole look and feel of the flashback stuff. The tint the whole thing had going, the realistically wince-worthy personal grooming choices, the clothes so synthetic I could almost /smell/ the polyester. Wow! Your whole production team did an amazing job! It would've been so easy to gently update the look to better meld with current tastes, but you didn't. Frosted blue eye shadow and huge collars, ahoy! Ditto the oh-so-not-PC gender interactions we got a glimpse of on the plane. I enjoyed the recreation of a scarier world as much as I enjoyed the story. Thank you to all!
What I want to know is how many takes it took to get the kiss filmed? I can just imagine Christian and Beth cracking up every time they got close. :D And yes to all the previous comments, they had great chemistry together, but to be honest, Christian is so swoon-worthy, I think he'd have chemistry with a rock! ;)
How many men do you think would have been as sweet and patient and gentle and understanding all this time as Hardison has been with Parker? I adore Parker -- she happens to be my favorite female character on TV these days -- but let's face it, the girl's got issues. It would not be easy to have a romance with her -- certainly not for Elliot, whose tastes are more, shall we say, conventional. But Hardison gets her, knows that she's worth the effort, and has been wonderful with her. He respects her unique way of looking at the world, just as she respects his. If you ask me (and yes, I know, nobody did :-) ), they're absolutely perfect.
Q: It seems fairly evident that Nate is testing each character's skills, not only in their core competency, but in the skills of each of the other members of the team. But most importantly, he seems to be letting each one take the lead on a con to test them as a leader. Combined with what feels like the natural culmination of the relationship arcs, it feels like the show is setting up for a full-blown series finale. That what's being alluded to by the Nate/Hardison setup in the beginning is the end of Leverage. How super bummed should I prepare myself to be come finale time?
As a bit of a Cooper nut, I loved this episode so much. (Though for a moment I was afraid you were going to use the same Cooper Mcguffin I used in a manuscript recently - thankfully you went somewhere totally different.)
I'm torn between thinking Nate is up to a new form of no good, or that he's going to start handing out 1001 cellphones.
And as much as Elliot and Parker do have more chemistry than Parker and Hardison, you can't have Wolverine hooking up with Kitty, that's just not cool.
No real questions, just thanks for a good Cooper story.
I want the Prohibition ep next year, please; and if it could start with Nate saying to Eliot "So, I am walking down the street and I see Big Julie. And I say to him "Big Julie, who has the action in this town tonight." I will unendingly worship at your altar, a devoted acolyte for all time. Of course I'd be happy with just the Prohibition ep.
I mustache you a question:It seems that in the past, to keep the Parker Hardison idea there were never any moments where Parker had any romantic scenes with another guy even if it was for a con or a super flashback. Is the reason why you had a Beth and Christian love story (that was not Eliot and Parker) a foreshadowing to a love triangle or was it just something that had to be done for the sake of the episode? I don't think D.B. Cooper had a love interest in the real story so did you put them together to experiment with the pairing or because you wanted the D.B. Cooper character to be more likable (but when is Christian not likable)? Also, how many takes did the kiss take to do?
For the people out there who feel like Hardison hasn't been there for Parker or that they don't have chemistry, just look at Queen's Gambit Job. I think it's true that they are growing up together and they have a lot to learn about relationships and I think that the dropping the ball moment from the food episode was one of the few times Hardison dropped the ball, but since The Stork Job and even before in the Juror #6, it seems like they are as characters a better match because Hardison understands her. It seems to me that Eliot feels like he's made his choices and doesn't deserve a happy ending while Parker and Hardison are still fresh and (mostly) clean. And Parker and Eliot have a connection in that they are the colder members of the team, but those are the traits that they are trying to get away from. Parker and Eliot are fun to watch together, but Parker bewilders and annoys the crap out of Eliot sometimes. It's been said that Hardison needles Eliot, but it's mutual, but Parker actually just does not make sense to him. Hardison's better at working around to her heart, and her vunerability, seeing her for who she is and why she is who she is while Eliot's better at working at her conscience, and the how to deal with the emotions that Hardison has inspired and the ensuing emotions that are going to follow feeling again. He understands the journey she's on because he's traveled it, but she wants to be on that journey because of Hardison. And while Beth and Christian had chemistry it wasn't Parker and Eliot , it was DB/Steve and Stephanie who are two different characters. I think Beth and Aldis also have a lot of chemistry that is toned down because Hardison deliberately tones it down so that Parker can adjust to her first real relationship. The girl literally could not identify the emotion jealousy when she felt it, and Hardison's understood that while Eliot initially hadn't.("20 pounds of crazy") Look at moments like in Queen's Gambit, The Experimental Job, First Contact in the vent, there is most definitely chemistry there. AND it's not just a matter of chemistry, but the journeys these characters are on and how they line up. I think Eliot is actually better at mentoring the two of them than he would be at being involved with Parker, I certainly find him more interesting that way, because I love seeing his insight into people and him quietly caring for his siblings.
Sorry for the double post but I forgot something. As to the team not caring for Eliot, I think they know that physical danger isn't his problem. It's the emotional danger and toll his life has taken on him that matters and when that comes up the team has ALWAYS been there for him. Sophie in the MMA episode, the entire team with Moreau, his relationship with Nate. It's true they aren't always looking over their shoulders when Eliot's fighting because that's when he's in his element , it's his safest place. It's when he is absolutely calm. It's when his emotional equillibrium has been tipped that the team is there and worries for him and that's harder to see because it happens so very rarely because for the most part he has dealt with his issues as has been previously said.
Sorry but i have to chime in on the whole E/P & H/P debate. I don't see how one episode (the cooking one) all of a sudden makes hardison a bad boyfriend who mistreats parker. This is the same guy who went rappling around the world (while obviously not liking it), waiting for four yrs because he knows she's damaged, and being there for her 99% of the time when she needs it (hardison is always her first call). But elliot the guy who calls her crazy & even did the finger motion, rolls his eyes or says 'something is wrong with you' every chance he gets, treats her better. If anything it's exactly how a brother treats a sister. Protects her when needed annoyed most the other times.
That being said the kiss was awkward. The 'hey' moment almost seemed like he was telling beth 'on three we kiss'.
But my question to John is-i'm wondering what was beth and christian's reaction when they first read about the 'kiss' in the script? Also now knowing the back and forth reactions do you wish you could take it back?
Personally, I think this whole Eliot/Parker/Hardison thing should be resolved just like that: get all three of 'em together, and thus kill the ship wars. ;)

Eliot/Parker chemistry SO much better than Parker/Hardison. You did that to mess with us! LOL! LOVED IT!
ReplyDeleteNate wants to build something? Please say you're going Hogwarts/Charles Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters and giving us the Jimmy Ford Memorial Academy and the next generation of conman avengers.
ReplyDeleteQuite an episode.
ReplyDeleteJust one question though: Could you please explain that ending? Were we supposed to know who Oliver Schmidt was or what he was about? And what is it that Nate wants to "build"? (Yes, I know that's three questions. But they're all tied up in the first one. And I'm pretty sure we'll at least find out the answer to the third one eventually, but the first two might need answering from you in this forum!)
Keep the great work coming!
ReplyDeleteBest episode this season! Top 5 all time! What does Nate want to build?
ReplyDeleteReally outstanding writing and directing and acting in this episode.
ReplyDeleteThis was a particularly wonderful showcase for Tim Hutton, but Christian Kane, Beth Riesgraf, Fred Ward, Gerald Downey and Ronnie Cox were also great.
ReplyDeleteThe second the mask came off I squealed, "McSWEETEN!!!" out loud. Nice to see my favorite fed again.
ReplyDeleteReally great episode. Props to Chris Downey for putting such a great spin on the legend of D.B. Cooper.
It was a nice break from the team taking down the jerk faces in suits they often deal with.
Top notch episode!!! Great spin on an old mystery ... which makes Leverage at it's best!
ReplyDeleteI disagree about Eliot/Parker having better chemistry than Hardison/Parker - but then the WW2 epi from last season was a while ago.
Question: were FBI agents allowed to have moustaches???
Fun epi. As always, it's great seeing everyone out of their "typical" character. Should we expect more epis like this? While I love seeing everyone step out side their rolls, I do like a good 'ole Leverage Smack Down! The "kiss" was a nice "twist." Costumes we awesome!
ReplyDeleteI've watched the end 3x tonight so far.
@Oona where did you hear about season 6?
ReplyDelete@Lily - Christian tweeted car stunt was all him.
Rogers, thank you for Christian's signature kiss, his hand to the face before the kiss. Loved it.
24jg13 - I have no special info, just embracing the power of positive thinking!
ReplyDeleteOona - was hoping I missed the announcement and you had heard soemthing official, well back to waiting.
ReplyDeletePlease don't put Kane in a spread collar suit again. It was just a little too spot-on.
ReplyDeleteLoved the redemption arc.
ReplyDeleteIt was good to see McSweetin again as well.
Still, great episode.
Fantastic ep and TH was especially awesome even from his usual awesome!
ReplyDeleteBut I hope you can fix the squeaky leather (Fred wards jacket) sounds for the DVD, rather distracting when watching with headphones :)
Props to the production team too, the costumes and sets etc were flawless.
No questions here. Thanks for jerking us around by pairing up Christian and Beth in the flashback. On the one hand, I am grateful to have seen what I know already exists in proper action, and on the other it makes me sad.
ReplyDeleteIt's a shame you won't channel that into a much more interesting Parker/Eliot relationship, but let's just stick her with Hardison so there's no spark or believability at all.
ReplyDeleteI know you often say you try not to be Grey's Anatomy and have your fans suffer emotional trauma each episode, but I do enjoy when there's some powerful stuff in an episode and to me, this one had plenty.
ReplyDeleteFinding out what it was about, all I could think was that out was going to suck.
Or see my dad, who still wears the one he got started back in the day. ;)
ReplyDeletehave you gotten any feedback from FBI personnel about this episode? wonder how they feel about your take on the case...
ReplyDeleteand is it remotely possible that your version of the story is actually true? did you research the stewardess who spoke to Cooper?
So, this whole episode exists just for that slow-mo car stunt, right?
ReplyDelete(OK, I am totally on board with using recaptcha to supplement OCR, and the new thing where we're ID'ing photos, no prob - except that the non-OCR word that they're actually checking is completely illegible.
ReplyDeleteI gotta admit I was concerned about how you would solve a real life cold case, and I was not disappointed at all.
One of my favorite episodes of any season. I really liked the heart of this one. That's why I love this show. Fingers crossed for the season 6 pickup.
So, if, god forbid, you don't get an S6 renewal, we get a Hutton/Kane 70's cop show, right?
ReplyDeleteTo be honest, I was feeling a bit iffy with the beginning of this season, i just didn't feel like it matched up with past seasons. But this episode really did it for me! From the genius writing and directing to the stylish 70's costumes!
ReplyDeleteHuge props to Nadine Hader for costumes, as well as the set dressers and hair stylist/makeup artists on this one!! I especially loved Beth's hair. Thanks for the S&H car hood slide - it was worth showing again in the flashback.
ReplyDeleteQuestion: Has McSweeten finally given up his crush on Parker? Or was he just distracted by his father's illness?
Comment: I certainly see a parallel between Nate's weariness of seeing the bad in people and your weariness in researching the worst behavior in people. It makes sense for Nate to want to find his higher self. You seem to be working on that too, John. Well done.
Thank you for the desk-lamp line. I had to laugh, mostly because I have a co-worker going through exactly that. You don't want to know the hoops for requisitioning a new office printer. (I will say, however, Leverage had helped me appreciate the reasoning behind some of them).
ReplyDeleteAnd can I just say I love the whole Parker-McSweeten thing. His blind-spot for her really is sweet (pun intended), given that he clearly isn't as clueless as he sometimes seems.
(Oh, and the captcha thing? I just went for an eye-exam that caused less strain than those things. Seriously.)
McSweetheart and Parker!
ReplyDeleteSophie is doing Hardison's job...
ReplyDeleteok, now the question who's pet theory was this? Your's, the whole writers room's, or just one pulled from the pool?
I sat there yelling at the screen, saying "Kiss her! Kiss her! Kiss her now!!" And then they did. I knew they could hear my encouragement!
ReplyDeleteEvery con is a chess game to Nate, but this seemed more like a jigsaw puzzle with a lot of lost piece - and Nate still managed to put all the pieces into place.
Has Agent McSweetie figured out that the Leverage team (and Hardison and Parker) are not who they told him they are? "Is that a cross bow?"
ReplyDeleteAs a PNW native, loved all the DB Cooper lore and the myth that he got away with it.
ReplyDeleteCrushing on the McSweetie 3fer--McSweetie, Ronnie Cox as McSweetie Sr. and Nate as McSweetie Former.
Fred Ward was awesome, would like to see him help the team in a future con.
Still love Pardison, think they're awesome together--don't agree with the Pane fans, but the fantasy was perfect.
This episode had a lot of heart in it. Thank you.
#RenewLeverage
Fantastic job yet again! LOVED it! Just one question...Oliver Schmidt..? Who is he? Did I blink and miss a reference in an earlier season/episode, or is this one of the examples of an episode being played out of order? Thanks
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed it but man was the "big reveal" of who DB Cooper was telegraphed.
ReplyDeleteA few questions though.
@Nyctotherion - i'd so totally watch that! John, can we...please, please!!!
ReplyDelete"I want to build something," she said mockingly. I hope this isn't that 'franchise' idea people have been kicking around. That would mean the team would be splitting up since they would have to oversee the different "con cells". And I don't want that.
ReplyDeleteOn a more positive note, Parker and McSweeten - I so want to see them working together more often.
ReplyDeleteTwo questions:
ReplyDeleteLoved seeing this side of McSweeten.
ReplyDeleteNot a question, but I just gotta say that I LOVE historicals!
ReplyDeleteRe: the "mystery," I didn't think they were hiding the ball too hard. Fred Ward certainly looked suspicious very early on when he and Hardison were working, and there were other clues. And really, it didn't matter - the episode held up as a really great story whether the mystery reveal was a surprise or not.
ReplyDeleteSeriously, this is one of my favorite Hutton performances of the entire series.
ReplyDeleteSpinoff deathmatch, there can be only one. Kane and Hutton as 70s cops or Kane and Riesgraf as a 70s husband and wife grifter team?
ReplyDelete(I'll also accept a Kane/Riesgraf/Hodge remake of The Mod Squad.)
Also, how did you get the running-along-the-edge-of-the-rooftop shot? Stuntie, or is your actor not as close to a broken neck as he seems?
First of all, let me just get this off my chest: I will never, EVER understand Elliiot/Parker shippers. Ever. They did just fine at playing the roles tonight, but Hardison/Parker is pure Nirvana. They're so perfect together, I don't know how it's possible not to root for them.
ReplyDeleteOkay. Moving on . . .
(Elliiot = Elliot. Whoops.)
ReplyDeleteCassandra, I agree that was some pretty great chemistry we saw, but it wasn't between Parker and Eliot. Beth Riesgraf and Christian Kane were portraying two completely different characters in those scenes.
ReplyDeleteWhich was a lot of fun to watch.
And what else would McSweeten have found if he kept digging beyond the crossbow?
ReplyDeleteAnother amazing episode last night.
ReplyDeleteBeth in that 1970's flight attendant outfit was gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteI also applaud the choice of having Elliot play Cooper in the past (for one thing it "establishes" credibility on how he could manage to survive the jump), though I'm surprised you didn't pull something like what you did in Rashamon Job where you had somebody long haired who could have but not quite been Elliot in the original telling of the story, though I guess that might have given away the game, and I suppose the flashback was based on how the Stewardess would want people to imagine Cooper to look.
I do have one question though, is it just me or has the guy who is playing McSweeten put on some weight? It seems like his face is a lot fuller in this episode than I recall it being last time he showed up. Not trying to be nit picky just wondering if my mind is playing tricks on me or not....
In a flashback scene in the FBI office I saw they had gotten computers. Were those Commodore PETs? If so, my hat's off to the prop department.
ReplyDeleteLet's go steal the '70's . . .
ReplyDeleteWhat a great episode! Especially Beth in the 70s makeup, hair, and flight attendant uniform. Dang she looked good!
ReplyDeleteOne comment though...
Waiting for second viewing before getting into the comments and questions, but one random comment I must make:
ReplyDeleteAll your actors look good running.
I am wierdly obsessed with actors who look really dorky when they run on camera (Sara Michelle Gellar and Laura Dern, I'm looking at you!).
Your guys all look like they're actually all pretty athletic, even Gina Bellman from back in Second David Job, kicking off her heels mid-run.
What happened to Sophie? She was all fangirl about DB Cooper in the beginning, and is nowhere to be seen when they finally figure out who he is.
ReplyDeleteLooks like Nate is trying to arrange it for his team to be on their own (by the end of the season). Is he retiring or dying?
ReplyDeleteOk, all the Parker-Hardison fans need to chill a little.
ReplyDeleteI need like burning that '70s cop show with Hutton and Kane, followed in the lineup by Aldis in a remake of "Shaft." Make that happen, please.
ReplyDeleteSo much love for this ep!
Thank you. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
P.S. – Damn your wv to hell.
ReplyDeleteAnd Kudos to Gerald Downey for that scene towards the end when he's holding the Odyssey, and looking down at his father's chair.
ReplyDeleteP.s. I also felt that the kiss scene between Beth and Christen was a bit awkward. Everything else was great, and how they played it was great, but it felt like it was only there to please fans of Parker/Elliot.
The Anonymous at 9:09 is me, just wanted to add something that I really liked,
ReplyDeleteIn the commentary of the Van Gogh job, Aldis Hodge explained how he tried to channel Glover a bit when he was in the flashback, I noticed Christen Kane did that too in this episode, I thought that was fantastic. :)
Christian Kane channeled Danny Glover? That's an odd choice. ;)
ReplyDeleteSame anonymous, nah I mean Christian Kane channeling Fred Ward XD lol
ReplyDeleteSo no one has yet mentioned what I thought was the interesting possibilities raised at the end of this ep. Nate and McSweeten Sr. agree that the important thing is not to catch DB Cooper, but to keep McSweeten Jr. from expending his life on the same obsession.
ReplyDeleteThen they _just happen_ to resolve the DB Cooper case in a way that frees McSweeten Jr. to live his life. The most obvious intrepretation is that what was revealed to us was what actually happened, and that McSweeten Jr. made a free choice to let Fred Ward stay free, so that the world at large still thinks the mystery is unsolved. But how about:
1) The reveal is true, but Nate and Ward arranged to
let it fall out the way it did for McSweeten Jr.'s benefit, or
2) The reveal is _not_ true, the original DB Cooper died in the jump, and Nate and Ward set up the whole theory to get McSweeten Jr. his resolution...

ReplyDeleteKane totally rocked the 70's porn star moustache. and the slide across the car was awesome! how many takes did they have to do of that? can we have the less than perfect clips in a gag reel on the dvd? everybody involved did an incredible job on this ep. thanks to all of you for giving us such an awesome show to look forward to every week!
Good episode although I don't want to offend anyone but I really didn't like it. To me it was too simple, we all saw the bad guy so early on. I actually thought they were married before the hijacking and they were in it together. It's a good thing you guys are not crime writers (no offense if anyone is).
ReplyDeleteHowever there were great points.
(well not him but you get my drift)
Loved that McSweeten was so excited to see the crossbow.
I'd totally watch a 70s set cop series with Hutton and Kane. Make it so!
ReplyDelete1A)For some reason, as soon as he said his wife was on the plane, I thought, "He's D.B.
ReplyDeleteB) Did the crew write that song for this episode because I can't seem to find it anywhere?
ReplyDeleteIMForeman, good point about Nate's turn from father to son! This was such a good ep for Nate in so many ways.
ReplyDeleteAnon @ 8:23, I don't think anyone needs to chill; we're all just having a friendly discussion.
ReplyDeleteOMG the kiss!!!
Okay Question(s)
How much fun was it getting to do this Ep? was this one of the wps that the whole writers room got excited about.
HAHA
I'll count the Van song with the boys as a Dukes of Hazzard nod.
ReplyDeleteOkay, so there was a British cop show in the 70's called McSweeney, which inspired much of the style and feel of Life on Mars.
ReplyDeleteNow I know 'McSweeten' was a name created ages ago, but did someone in the writers room make a McSweeney/McSweeten reference and that's how the idea was born?
I'm probably reaching, but with the whole 70's thing I can't help but think maybe I'm on to something.
And I loved this episode, because I'm a sucker for redemption stories.
And the costuming was fantastic.
P.S. Was it really "sleeps 90 minutes a day", "grows his own food" "crawled through a billion length tunnel in Yemen (?)" Eliot, who said that that jump couldn't have possible been survived? Seriously?
ReplyDeleteOkay, the Elliot/Parker kiss was a little weird, I always viewed them as brother and sister, so I turned away on there kiss. The episode was actually pretty entertaining, McSweeney was actually pretty awesome, I think Parker may have a little crush on him, don't get me wrong , I love Parker/Hardison, I think they have the best chemistry on TV, but I wouldn't mind seeing some romantic drama!!!
ReplyDeleteI thoroughly enjoyed this episode - McSweetie, YAY!
ReplyDeleteI have to say, when Peter McSweeten goes to talk to Stephanie and Steve Reynolds enters the scene, I knew right then that Steve was the actual hijacker.
ReplyDelete@Oona: I'm not part of the Leverage crew so I can't answer directly but Sophie's answer was actually pretty perfect from my interpretation and if you're familiar with the Odyssey her statement is really not flattering.
I appreciate that the approach to the "bad guy" in this episode does not equate to "evil guy". Subtle but poignant.
ReplyDelete@Anon. "IPA 684-2" is one of the real signs copied direct from the Bridgeport Brewery for the Leverage set. Chris Downey explained it in the set tour during fan con.
ReplyDeleteAt our house, we're really curious about what it was that made you decide to try to tackle DB Cooper.
ReplyDeleteAs to how much we liked it, we're a little conflicted.
This comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDelete@MZ - good points, and it may very well be that Sophie was going for a complex view that was not so flattering. Her description was fairly flattering though, so I'm wondering how much of the first season Sophie that started out romanticizing Nate is still in there. For me, it's more interesting for her as a character - particularly since we don't see a lot of character moments for her - if a big part of her still does see the white knight.
ReplyDeleteI read about D.B.
ReplyDelete@Carol
ReplyDeleteThe British show is actually called "The Sweeney", and starred John Thaw, later to be the unequaled Inspector Morse.
ReplyDeleteAnd can officer McSweeten be more sweet ?
ReplyDeleteI love GB and AH, but I really didn't care for their line readings.
@allyone
ReplyDeleteRE:Cyanide - I think it was a lampshade hanging/shoutout to all of those ridiculous drug deals on T.V. where people test the merchandise by tasting it, which is the worst thing you could possibly do and not at all true to real life. Like a "Take that, old 70's shows, for making me think cops licked cocaine!"
Yeah, the cyanide bit was pretty funny. (Also reminded me of Cary Grant tasting the tooth powder in "Charade": "Heroin! Peppermint-flavored heroin!"
ReplyDeleteI really just wanted to say how much I loved that episode. I had never heard of the DB Cooper story until a Journeyman episode a few years ago, and I was super excited to see another take on it.
ReplyDeleteLike everyone else, I would LOVE to know how much research went into this episode.

ReplyDeleteThat is the "build something" that I immediately thought of when Nate asks Sophie that in the end.
Also, how timely to have this episode. I had just been reading about how the latest promising lead didn't go very far.
Could we please have a prequel to this episode on the season 5 DVDs that shows McSweeten asking Hagen for help? There wasn't enough of the two of them in the episode.
ReplyDeleteOh that was fun! I had no idea how you were going to play this, John, but that was a great ride.
ReplyDeleteMy only question is for anyone else who reads this:
Was I the only one singing "Sabotage" during the cop action sequences?
@Chris - Someone SO needs to fanvid that. IMMEDIATELY.
ReplyDeleteWhat was Nate's weird hand gesture to Sophie just before he started explaining his Sirens theory? Just after she told him he was Odysseus?
ReplyDeleteNo questions, just observations and cheers...
ReplyDeleteHubby predicted that there was no DB Cooper and that the stewardess took the money, so we were close but not quite.
ReplyDeleteHaving said that, this episode was a ton of fun either way. And I too am hopeful about Nate's building something comment at the end!
I was worried (I didn't like Van Gogh episode), but this one was fantastic!
ReplyDeleteSeason 5 is, for now, much better than Season 4, and I thought it was great.
ReplyDeleteYou know, I was expecting this to be a cheesy comedy episode, but instead you got me all choked up over the McSweetens and Steve and Stephanie. I wish you would do a remake with Christian as Starsky and Beth as Hutch. Ooh, and Tim as Captain Dobey and Gina as Huggy Bear.
ReplyDeleteBut I don't just have dumb ideas. I have dumb questions too -
ReplyDeleteI really liked this episode.

ReplyDeleteWhy is Sophie always some random ancillary character in the flashback episodes?
ReplyDeleteAnd my honest criticism is this: I really wanted to like the episode.
ReplyDeleteOne comment/question: having family members with pancreatic cancer, I thought that the portrayal of someone with very little time left was somewhat unrealistic.
ReplyDelete1: Awwwwwwwww, poor McSweetums.
ReplyDeleteThe idea that Eliot doesn't get fussed over has been discussed to death in past.
ReplyDeleteAnyway I LOVE the setting!
ReplyDeleteThat farewell scene by McSweeten with the book, the christmas list and the tally ho wave was beyond great. So well acted, so well filmed. Dammit, you made me sniffle!
I also liked that Parker has enough of a connection to McSweeten that she was the one who brought him to Nate. Nice touch.
Great episode, my compliments to all involved.
What was it like for Tim Hutton and Ronny Cox to be working together again after thirty years? I love "Taps" and I about lost it when Nate went in to interview Peter McSweeten for the first time. :D
ReplyDeleteI didn't have time to read all of the post for this epi and I don't know if anyone has already asked this, but did Beth and Christian get the kiss on the first try? If no, how many times did it take? And if it took a few, do we get to see the bloopers on the season 5 DVD? I love the outtakes, pranks, and behind the scenes things y'all do. Keep it up, give us MORE!
ReplyDeleteBunch o'stuff...where to start. It was great to see McSweetin and get a little of his backstory. Yes, the ending was fairly predictable, but I know how Romeo and Juliet ends, too...doesn't interfere with my enjoyment of a good performance.
ReplyDeleteI think everyone needs to face at least one fact: Christian has chemistry with anything with legs as well as a number of inanimate objects.
ReplyDelete(although having Hardison basically ignore her in that episode was a very much IMO only for the plot, because Parker going to Eliot was very obiviously so that they could add the scene later on about Eliot helping coach her through the food critic part.)
I hope all that made sense
add to end of paragraph
ReplyDelete*It seems to be how Pardison/Harker is written*
I was hoping they'd send McSweeten after Oliver Schmidt--you know, as something for him to focus on, since the DB Cooper mystery was taken care of--but I liked the Nate/Sophie scene as the end bit.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous, I'd give you the "maturing together" thing if it seemed to be two-sided.
ReplyDeleteTo me it looks like Hardison is becoming more like Nate in all the bad ways, and he'd still miss the Job if he were up late with the newest version of whatever game.
WoW!!! Just WOW!!!
ReplyDeleteI guess banter is not the right word, The word I should have used was bicker. and that is a trait of siblings (argueing about stupid things).
ReplyDeleteWell, I must say a personal opinion, is that the character development of Hardison has really lacked in Season 5.
ReplyDeleteMy preference on the Parker/Hardison and Eliot/Parker thing would be for Parker to pull a Holly Hunter from Broadcast News and kick 'em both to the curb.
ReplyDeleteAs someone with no dog in this fight, I have to say, CK and BR have chemistry.
ReplyDeleteWhat I want to know is how many takes it took to get the kiss filmed? I can just imagine Christian and Beth cracking up every time they got close. :D And yes to all the previous comments, they had great chemistry together, but to be honest, Christian is so swoon-worthy, I think he'd have chemistry with a rock! ;)
ReplyDeleteOK, this season's theme is redemption.
ReplyDeleteSeason 4's was "consequences."
What were the themes of Seasons 1, 2 and 3?
ReplyDeleteQ: It seems fairly evident that Nate is testing each character's skills, not only in their core competency, but in the skills of each of the other members of the team.
ReplyDeleteGreat background to flesh out McSweeten and give us a closer look at Nate and what he's given up in his descent into criminality.
ReplyDeleteYou've probably had all the Mustache questions in the world, so while my brain is still fixated on that for the episode I'll ask a separate question:
Have you guys ever run the Leverage RPG in the Writer's room? Who would play what Roles?
As a bit of a Cooper nut, I loved this episode so much. (Though for a moment I was afraid you were going to use the same Cooper Mcguffin I used in a manuscript recently - thankfully you went somewhere totally different.)
ReplyDeleteI'm torn between thinking Nate is up to a new form of no good, or that he's going to start handing out 1001 cellphones.
ReplyDeleteI mustache you a question:It seems that in the past, to keep the Parker Hardison idea there were never any moments where Parker had any romantic scenes with another guy even if it was for a con or a super flashback.
ReplyDeleteFor the people out there who feel like Hardison hasn't been there for Parker or that they don't have chemistry, just look at Queen's Gambit Job.
ReplyDeleteSorry for the double post but I forgot something.
ReplyDeletecorrections to my post:
ReplyDeleteMomentum, not inertia.
Sicker, not sucker.
That's what I get for posting while up with the baby.
ReplyDeleteThat being said the kiss was awkward. The 'hey' moment almost seemed like he was telling beth 'on three we kiss'.
But my question to John is-i'm wondering what was beth and christian's reaction when they first read about the 'kiss' in the script? Also now knowing the back and forth reactions do you wish you could take it back?
Personally, I think this whole Eliot/Parker/Hardison thing should be resolved just like that: get all three of 'em together, and thus kill the ship wars. ;)
ReplyDeleteWhy was Parker dressed up like Magnus Robot Fighter?
ReplyDeleteParker was crazy sexy in this episode
