So Where the Hell Have You Been?

Writing, and then melting down, and then writing faster.

I try to be honest with you folks here on the blog, so I'll give this a whirl.

Right after wrap last year I took a little "fix this pilot" job -- which was then picked up to shoot and led straight into production. Although the pilot didn't go to series, it still ate up Sept-through Dec. Add that to some family health issues, and my hiatus ... wasn't. No hiatus for two years in a row by this point, as I had a movie to write on the hiatus before that, further complicated by some unpleasant personal issues.

There was something else, too. Those of you who heard me talk at the Fan-Con this year in Portland heard me be kind of raw about this: I hit asshole fatigue. Three years of endless research on corporations and fat cats who ripped people off, causing misery and harm in the name of profit -- and relentlessly, inevitably got away with it. Either the law was never applied, or they got a pass because the economy was so bad or ... whatever. Leverage to a great degree was born of anger. Robin Hood is an angry hero. After the bloody research required to make 44 stories, I was all angered-out.

So I ran smack into burnout over the 2010 holidays. And this with Day 1 of the Season 4 writing schedule coming.

Not fun. Not conducive to blogging, in any way shape or form. What writing I could get done besides prepping Leverage S4 was spent on launching the Dungeons & Dragons comic book. Basically, I had nothing left.

Luckily, the enthusiasm of the new blood on the Leverage staff got me fired up. Breaking stories in the room is the same process as writing, to a great degree. As we all know, you can't think yourself out of a writing block, you have to write yourself out of a thinking block. In short order I was back, enjoying the genuinely new and exciting ideas they were bringing to the room ...

... and then I was directing.

Directing means I'm out of the room for 3 weeks. Directing 2 episodes (plus on-set for the season opener) meant I'd be out of the room for close to 8 weeks. If I was going to live up to my responsibilities in the writer's room, that meant going fast and hard at story-breaking for the first few weeks, before I started buggering off to Portland. So no typing for you folks then, either.

Now, with every episode but the finale written, I should be able to get back on a regular schedule for the blog. We'll see.

None of this is "poor me", of course. I only mention it because somebody out there who's typing their spec may be having a shitty week. You should know -- and this may be either encouraging or discouraging -- that everyone has that week, sometimes. No matter how long you've been doing it, or how many tools in the toolbox, there are still days, sometimes weeks, where the blank page just stares back at you and wins.

Let's start back up with the post-game for #312, and we'll see what we see, eh?

I don't know about anyone else, but I never felt you weren't updating because you were dicking around. I felt you almost certainly busy the point of collapse. And that's all cool.

Don't suppose you want to offload some of the busy on to an unemployed fan of Leverage? ;)

Your blogs on the show are a blessing, not a requirement. We appreciate all you do for the fans but certainly understand that everyone needs a break. Although, as you said, you didn't HAVE a break. I'm really sorry your time during hiatus was eating up with family health issues and asshole fatigue. I think the world is sick of asshole fatigue as well. That's part of why Leverage is such a popular show for so many.

You have many fans of John Rogers and the Word of God in the Leverage word (according to TV Tropes lol), who are just grateful for what you do and truly admire you. As one of the fancon people, I felt honored just to meet you. So no complains from me - and most fans - if you don't get a chance to blog in addition to everything else.

Try to have some fun John and take a weekend off or something :) You might really enjoy it!

We need you functioning, Rogers. If you burn out, where would get another one of you?

Take a break, dammit.

Good post. It's kind of comforting to hear that people who are much more experienced than you go through the same kind of stuff.

Also -- asshole fatigue. Yes.

Personally I appreciate you taking the time out to do these blogs so no need to explain. And get some rest!!!!

That saidm great to have you back

John, thank you for all your hard work! You give us more than we have a right to expect and more than we could wish for.

If you want to blog, I'll be here eager to read it. But please don't feel like it's an obligation. We understand that you have other demands on your time!

Be well! And have another drink, if you want. Or not, that's cool, too.

I've always enjoyed reading your blogs. Especially when you take the time to answer the fans' questions about the episode of the week. I look at that as a gift. You give so much of yourself to the fans and Leverage. I understand you that "Something's Gotta Give" and the blog was a good place to draw the line. I just wish you had had a chance to get away & take a nice, relaxing vacation.

Happy to see you around these parts, but I agree with everyone else...breaks from blogging are completely understandable.

Thinking nice restful thoughts for you and everyone involved with Leverage. Can't wait to see the new show this evening. It's my birthday today, so thanks for the special present.

When your asshole fatigue is better, can you guys look into all the assholes in the world of education right now? That's be great.

Anonymous said...

Missed you John, but we are all just happy you take any time to converse with us. So excited for tonight! Hope you took a little time Thursday to watch the Burn Notice season premier - I thought it seemed very Leverage inspired (the grifting parts, anyway).

The term "Asshole fatigue" is now in my personal lexicon. Let me know where to send the royalty checks to.

Seriously man, take care of yourself. Get some rest. You need it.
A burned out Rogers does none of us any good.
BTW, if you haven't seen the new season of "Doctor Who" yet, take the time. It will cheer you to no end.

I was watching the Firm Fitness infomercial this morning and all those women reminded me of an episode of Scarecrow and Mrs King in which the 'mary kay' style beauty products company was really a front for evil. Maybe if you want a break from evil ceos, you could try to do an episode with evil housewives in suburbia? It would be pretty funny to see the team trying to fit in with a traditional neighborhood.

What everybody said.

Plus, it's good, I think, to be honest about there being some downside even after achieving success. Just in case, you know, someone was laboring under the illusion that there is such a thing as a perfect world once you score that dream job.

Life is all about ups and downs...and how you deal with them.

Hoping you're done with the bumpiest part, and wishing you the best. And, please, take a fucking break next time you get a chance. Jesus. You're not Superman, remember?

wv = laves, which is the highest extreme of love. "We laves you."

As those above have said, I consider this blog to be a completely extra thing you do, a special sort of gift, something I every so greatly appreciate and think wonderful. You are carrying a lot on your shoulders, sir, and I hope we fans demonstrate our appreciation, not just in praise of you and the work you do, but by doing what we can to help the financial remuneration be satisfactory (I know, money ain't the whole deal, but you have to pay for Scotch and Guinness
somehow).

And with that, I'd like to tell you I have already gone through season 3 DVD three times (once with commentary, of COURSE -- honestly, sometimes I enjoy the commentary as much or a touch more than the show. SOMETIMES.) I've also rewatched seasons 1 and 2 about 4 times this year and am embarking on yet another round (starting with 1, obviously) which I have already watched more times than I can enumerate. The only other shows I've watched with this kind of constant repetition (like a good album) are Original Star Trek, Jonny Quest, and the BBC/A&E version of Pride & Prejudice.

I knew this, but I think it's something that's easy to forget, and I thank you for putting it out there again, because it can't be mentioned enough.

Thanks Rogers, good to hear your blog voice again!

I second (or fifteeth, I guess), everyone else.

But I'd like to add that it's comforting to me when someone at your level, who juggles multiple projects that all seem to effortlessly kick ass, shares that they, too, experience cognitive lock and need a break.

You're a real person. That's so cool! :D

I'm sorry. I am still trying to get over the bitter disappointment that you were not #3 on this list, especially with all your talk about writing pantless. Guess we'll have to wait for that centerfold. Write on. Type faster.

after reading about your over-committed life i'm even more grateful that you take the time to do all the commentaries on the DVDs. (i've got season 3 in the DVD player right now.) other shows do maybe 1 or 2 in a season -- you do them all. it's so much fun to hear how ideas for the plot evolve, how the directors make it work with such a short shooting schedule, crazy things the actors do, all of it. you guys never run out of things to talk about. you can see why this show has such heart -- it comes from you.

I'm just thankful you are back, and hope you get more time off to relax soon. :)

Adding "asshole fatigue" to my list of "Roger-isms" with "f*ckneck". LOL

Thank you for all your hard work!

I'm jumping on the no expectations bandwagon as well. I think one of the wonderful things about Leverage is that it speaks to people who live in the real world and have an understanding of the shit storm that is life. Entitlement is not on the menu.

If it gives you any comfort in a world of RSS feeds we are not clicking the link every day waiting for new posts. I just wait for the link to pop up to remind me that you are still kicking.

Thank you again for all the consideration. We do appreciate the time and effort you put into including us in the amazing world you have created.

What they said.

I'll admit, I make an embarrassing litte squeeing sound every time I see the blog has been updated, but, jeez, don't kill yourself, man! Sleep is our friend. Rest is our friend. We love you for your brain, and we don't want anything happening to it.

I've said it before – we are some of the most indulged fans in the history of fandom. You don't have to answer our obsessive questions here. And we know that. You just take care of you. We, your faithful minions, will be here when you can get to us.

And I understand about asshole fatigue. The Texas lege is in session, and Gov. Goodhair is making noises about running for prez. It's … not pretty.

Robin said...

What they said, man. Don't burn yourself out on our account. We still love you even when you need to engage radio silence here to concentrate on the important stuff. You spoil us rotten so much of the time when you really don't have to, and we can't thank you enough for that.

I hope that you get a chance to rest a bit now and that your next hiatus from the show is an actual break. (Though I know from reading KFM and Joe Mallozzi's blog that a showrunner's job is never really done, at least it's quieter when you're not in production.)

If you need to vent your asshole fatigue, or anything else, we'll listen. If you need to walk away for a while, we'll be here when you're ready to come back again. And if you need any help we can give, send up a flare. Just take care of yourself and do what you gotta do.

Everyone's covered the big points, so I won't nag you any further about slowing down and resting. I can sympathize with the level of tired (I call it stupid-tired, which I must say doesn't have quite the same ring to it!) I'm just coming back from hitting one of those walls, which is an annual work-year event.

Which is all in aid of saying we who have been where you are (although I doubt as intensely as you) salute you, and are doubly-appreciative of what you share with us. I'm looking forward to the return of the blog, as time permits, and your witty and pithy insights.

There's a reason they tell you that "in the event of loss of cabin pressure, put YOUR oxygen mask on first before assisting any children travelling with you."

Get too tired from fighting all of the denizens of Arkham at once and you leave yourself open for a sucker wrestling move by Bane. And no one wants to deal with the 'Legion of Substitute Rogers' stories that would lead to.

Of course, being too busy is a GOOD problem to have, but it is taxing nonetheless. Welcome back.

(Did you now that Paul Krugman gave a shout out to your Ayn Rand/LOTR quote recently in an on-line interview?)

Best of luck with the new season.

Courtney said...

Take care of yourself, John. Leverage wouldn't be the same without you.

We'll survive if you don't update here. We'd rather have more Leverage, I think.

This hiatus, take a vacation! :)

kimshum said...

It's all good. Gotta take care of yourself so you can keep fighting the good fight.

"Asshole fatigue" is a GREAT turn of phrase.

But if you did have a moment at some point, now you've made me curious...how does a "fix this pilot" job work? I assume the studio brings you in, but is it to write or to supervise? Is the original writer still involved? And if so, who gets creator credit?

I suppose those problems wouldn't apply if you were brought in to do a completely different take - and September would be early enough to do so, if less than fun - but if that was the case, it's surprising that the original writer fell out that fast...

Features are notorious for their rewrites, but you hear of that a lot less in TV. You have piqued my interest, sir.

No matter how long you've been doing it, or how many tools in the toolbox, there are still days, sometimes weeks, where the blank page just stares back at you and wins.

Such a lovely way to describe it. Thank you for the reminder.

alikat7 said it best: "Your blogs on the show are a blessing, not a requirement."

I'm always both in awe and incredibly thankful you put up with us and answer hundreds of questions every episode. I also love your blog even when you aren't talking about Leverage but in the grand scheme of things blogging should come at the bottom of your 'to do' list. Besides, if you aren't in fighting shape to write/make Leverage or all the other stuff you do, there would be nothing to blog about anyway. ;)

Portland is beautiful in the summer time and it's just starting to get nice. Step out and enjoy it. If you end up in my bar, you've got scotch on the house the whole night!

I'm happy to hang on there with you. As I've said before, you're a brilliant genius who I have the utmost respect for. You & the Leverage crew (all involved) are the hardest working people I've ever known. I'm grateful to anything you share with the public, because as you've said in the past, most shows don't connect with their fans in the way that Leverage does. Thank you again for everything that you do, from your public life to your personal struggles. You are greatly appreciated as a person and what you do makes a difference.

Hey, it takes a lot of work writing the best show on TV and the best comic on the racks (serioulsy, everyone is reading D&D, right?)

And just throwing this out there that Leverage comics from IDW wouldn't be a bad thing.

The Dungeons & Dragons comics have been great, by the way. I don't know how long your scheduled run is on them, but I hope whoever takes over can live up to your standards, especially with the dialog.

It's good to have Leverage back, good to see the team.

It's good to have you back, on whatever terms you can manage. Sorry about the bad spot, glad it seems like things are soemwhat better.

Thanks for all you do to give US a place to escape to when the world is too much with us--curling up on the sofa with some Leverage DVDs can be very comforting. Is that sick or what?

I started watching your show because I'm in love with Timothy Hutton, then promptly fell in love with everyone on the cast. I watch Leverage and I love you for it, for your righteous anger. Please keep fighting the good fight, you give me hope. For a future episode (sorry to give you something new to be mad about - although the filmmaker's inspiring), here's a story:

We're glad to have you back, and even more glad that you made it out alive! As everyone has already stated, no one requires you to post here. By answering everyone's questions, you do more work for the fans than any other show creator I've ever heard of, and for that we are eternally grateful. It really is a gift, and it would be incredibly selfish of us to consider that gift an obligation when you've already done much, much more than anyone could possibly expect.

So in short: Next chance you get, take that break. Everyone needs a vacation, especially if they didn't get one the last three times they were supposed to.

"British humourist Spike Milligan once recalled how he was in the throes of a nervous breakdown. Alone in bed and crying uncontrollably. He noticed his baby daughter walking towards his bed, arms outstretched. In her hand was a glass of water. She wanted to give something. Something to make it alright. This was all she could find. A while ago someone asked me to sum up the music of Crowded House. For some reason I responded with that tale - perhaps because it is simultaneously the saddest and most uplifting thing I've ever heard. Like Neil Finn's voice when he sings, "I don't pretend to know what you want\But I offer love""

- liner notes of Recurring Dream -Very Best Of -Crowded House

I was saving that mushy observation for Gina, but it seems to fit here.

Yeah, I'm the spec monkey throwing his feces on the wall, trying to get SOMETHING to hit the page while being one of those disabled "leeches" on the government, wondering if there will rent or food or medical care on a month-to-month basis.

The season opener brought my spirits up enormously and turned me right back to the page and the "death scene" I can't make behave. Thanks, John.

You guys seriously rock. As a judicial clerk, someone who reads court case after court case every. single. day. I completely understand asshole fatigue. I'm just eternally grateful that there's a show like Leverage on TV, where I can get a bit of that satisfaction that I can't quite get in real life.

Honestly, Leverage is the show I look forward to the most, and I'm someone who watches TV like it's going out of style. But Leverage is appointment television for my husband and me, and we love every second. Whatever you do, above and beyond the show, is an incredible gift to your fans.

So, thank you for all that you do. You are all awesome.

But please take care of yourself first. =)

See how understanding everyone is? Well, not me, Gunga Din! I insist that you put aside your petty and tiresome need for rest and sanity and serve my fan-girl needs *now*. This is why they pay you the big(gish) bucks, bucko. Baby needs a new blog and Daddy needs to "writer up" and make sure I'm happy. As long as you're seeing to my needs, I'd also like a mocha. Yes, with whipped cream. Like that's not a given?

Totally in the same boat as everyone else. Thanks for the explanation, but it's totally not needed - we're just glad to have the blog as is. I see Leverage as a big huge joy because of what you do here, something that no other show does or has and feel incredibly lucky that you open yourself up for our questions, concerns, criticisms, intuitions and guesses for every single episode of this show. Every one. Do you have any idea how insanely cool that is for fans? We don't care how long we have to wait, we're just glad that with all you have to do, you still do what you do. From all of us, thank you.

John -

You owe us no apologies, but we appreciate you sharing your experiences with us. Truly grateful for any time you take to answer our “burning” questions. But, like everyone else, I consider it an added bonus, not a requirement.

I know of no shows I watch who: A) connect with their fans in the way Leverage does or B) has a commentary for EVERY episode on each season’s DVD. Also know of no other series writer who has the patience to read 250+ responses to an episode, much less answer 100+ questions the fans pose weekly.

You experience “Asshole Fatigue”, worked your way past it, 8 weeks on the set & ALL episodes for S4 are written except the finale??? It’s not even July 1st yet - Damn, pace yourself, man! Like that you are slightly insane, but take some time off!!! At least a weekend or two.

Was happy to see you at least took some time to daydream about Colin Firth & Rachel Weisz the last few days! Take care, John & be good to yourself!!!!!
Dawn/StL-MO = @D3fStL

PS – IF YOU MISSED IT – You may want to check into above response @5:41 PM - BETH said “Portland is beautiful in the summer time and it's just starting to get nice. Step out and enjoy it. If you end up in my bar, you've got scotch on the house the whole night!”

Here's another long-time fan, chiming in with everyone else. :)

Honestly, sure, I really missed getting to see the rest of the question posts for the last season, but like everyone else said, by no means did we think you were simply slacking! Heck, I was amazed when I found out you had decided to start that project for fun/to connect with the fans/what have you in the first place! It was like being spoiled with multiple cherries on the sundae. Not to mention all the awesome extras on the dvd's, too. Like someone else said, there's not many shows that connect with their fans in that way, and it's great... Leverage fans seem to be a pretty excited, easy bunch, ones that appreciate your group going through all the research/asshole fatigue (love that term)/witty dialogue so we can enjoy the same satisfaction of seeing our favorite little team take down the bad guy. Thanks so much, and take a break! _Loved_ the premiere!

Wow..so I've been so busy with grad school and planning my friend's bachelorette party that I have completely neglected to go get the Season 3 DVD!! I definitely need to fix this ASAP, especially since it sounds like there are some really cool special features.

That being said, I'm sure you're 100x busier..I assumed you weren't updating because you WERE taking time to breathe. I LOVE that you take us behind the scenes and throw us little tidbits, but I would never want that at the expense of your sanity (if you have any left ;) )

So...uh, basically what everyone else said!

Oh, and as I mentioned several months ago on a *different* fan forum, I'm still hoping to see my proposed episode "The Mocha Job" sometime this season. Did Eliot and Parke's rope snap accidentally under the strain, or was it sabotaged like the other guy's? The end looked a bit even to me, and a climber friend assures me they don't "just snap".

Oona said...

Well if the first ep is any indication, you work on the show definitely has not suffered for the crap and stressful hiatus. Excellent job there.

I love your blog but totally understand that it's not your top priority. If you feel like you can keep blogging, awesome. If not, we'll miss you terribly but I want the showrunner on my fave show to be in a good place for running the show. If you do feel you can keep it up,would it help to ditch Season 3? A lot of questions have probably already been answered by the finale and the Season 3 DVD commentaries and that way you wouldn't have such a mountain to climb to get caught up (no pun intended off 401). Whatever's easiest for you.

Thanks for all you do and take care!
