Parker is not a grifter. There's a lot more to being a grifter that dressing up. Parker is learning to act, learning to stick to a character. She is just barely able to think of what to say or do, and she needs coaching (she's nearly always had Nate, Sophie, or Tara talking in her ear to feed her lines and directions). She cannot read people, she's not readily adaptable to situations, and she can't easily manipulate others. She's not a grifter. She's a decoy, or she's bait, or she's a sidekick if she's in on the grift. She's not able to solo, so she's not (and without some major character changes, will never be) what Sophie is.

To Whom it May Concern,

I'll begin with a lavish coating of adoration for all that this show does before I begin on the infamous BUT or HOWEVER. I've been a faithful watcher since, well, the third ep of season 1. And have made watching Leverage a priority above homework, work work, working out, and even working on my tan. I love these characters and I believe they are being treated unfairly. Let me explain.
Sophie is ridiculously underused. Eliot and Hardison are turning into a slapstick routine, and Nate is becoming repetitive. Only Parker has continued to grow and change as a human being - like a good character should. Bravo and kudos to Beth and the writers. *cheers of orange soda*

Having said this, I wish to say that I still cackled with glee over "Don't stab. Don't stab." I gasped when shots rang out. I squeed when Sophie tumbled. I gasped again when the Italian made that call. But at the end, I was sorely disappointed. The episode felt like a frantic mary-go-round that was spinning out of control and in the end, with the last scene, I was underwhelmed. No big revelation. Very little feeling of threatening or menace approaching. Merely, lets go get 'em.

So I plead. NO, I beg. To restore my fangirl heart and keep me warm and cozy throughout the long fall months, please answer me this:

What is one heartstopping moment or tasty treat or mouthwatering morsel that you can reveal is coming up in December?

Thank you for your continued hard work and dedication. It will never go underappreciated.

Sincerely,

Kate

Chatty Cathy once again. I have The Bottle Job on right now (with commentary) and just twigged to something -- you mention trying to figure out the geography of the bar and the apartment for this episode, and we get to see it in The Morning After (Nate's Bedroom! The Elevator!) "Geography that didn't exist" -- did you guys map out the territory during that episode and keep the notes or did you have to do it all over again for the s3 episode? Do you have a map pinned to the board for reference? Did you have to go back to figure out where things were? You know fandom and you know there are those among us who are also mapping out the set and will call on a trip up. How much do you care about this, and how much time are you spending in making sure this kind of stuff -- which could be considered trivial, although you know nothing is really trivial -- is in continuity?

OK, I'll try to be quiet for the rest of the week. TRY...

@Sherri It's worth noting that Riker..I mean Frakes..directed both The Bottle Job and the Morning After Job.

Great episode! I love the Eliot-and-Hardison-cop-show parts. XD

Quick question though. It seems like the regulars at the bar (or even just people at the bar in general) would notice something was up with the Leverage crew. Why don't they ever say anything?

Regarding Kane's casting, I did see an interview with him one time where he said he almost missed trying out for the part. He was sent the script for the pilot, and he read as far as "Eliot walks into the room wearing wire-rim glasses and drinking tea from a mug" and threw the script behind the couch. A call from his agent prompted him to take another look.

I believe Dean Devlin states in one of the season 1 DVD commentaries that the network wasn't sure about his casting, until he (Dean) pointed out that in the audition Kane was "movie-acting" rather than "TV-acting".

Re: the various folks dissatisfied with Nate's reaction to the attempt on the team (not pissed enough), I'm wondering if he wasn't that angry because he recognized it wasn't a real attempt. Or, if it was, it was a pretty amateurish one.

No self-respecting (and Moreau-caliber professional) sniper would have sprayed Nate's apartment with that kind of fusillade. From where he was positioned, he could have had Vector (or Nate) with one shot at almost any time before anyone knew he was there. And then he would have been gone.

The whole attempt seemed more for effect than efficacy, like something staged to make a point. Perhaps The Italian trying to remind Nate that his being tossed into a deep, dark dungeon isn't the only threat his team faces if they fail? I just can't see someone of Moreau's reputation hiring a "sniper" who is that bad at his job.

Which brings up the question … why didn't Eliot, who presumably has all kinds of experience with and knowledge of snipers, know this? Or was he just reacting to a perceived attempt to kill Nate and Sophie before thinking everything through?

And just when did that guy have time to police his brass?

Ally said...

SueN - I'm not sure we're supposed to think the sniper was amateurish. I think the spray may have been for plot convenience as opposed to saying something important about the sniper. If Eliot says he was from Moreau, I think we're supposed to believe he was from Moreau. I could be wrong, but that's the way I read that scene.

Kate - I think the whole team has shown some growth, not just Parker. Hardison has gotten better at grifting and stands up to Nate. Sophie has gotten more emotionally involved in the righteousness of their jobs. Nate is more in control and is evolving as a leader. The mere fact that he and Sophie discussed the decision to go after Moreau showed growth to me. It's more of a partnership/team effort than a dictatorship compared to where it was last season around this time. And I think Eliot's arc will become more apparent in 315.

I agree that sometimes the emphasis on the Hardison-Eliot comedy team seems forced and that Sophie was at times criminally underused, but that has gotten way better recently.

However, if it gets us a good morsel or two about what to expect in December, I will just nod and second everything you said wholeheartedly.

SueN. said...

@Kate:

Echoing what Ally said, I think Sophie has been incredible this season, not just as a grifter (where she always shines), but as a character. To me, she's become very much the heart and emotional center of the team. Her scenes with Parker, where she acts as mentor/big sister/confidante, have been among some of my favorite this season, and she and Nate seem to have reached a whole new level in their relationship.

I remember back in "two Live Crew," when Eliot was eulogizing "Katherine," he described Sophie as "a sister and best friend" who "had a way of taking care of evryone." I thought it was a lovely sentiment, though I didn't really see it then. Now, however, she's living up to it and more.

And Hardison has grown up a lot this year. He's starting to tamp down on his ego, which has helped his grifting, but he's also had his image of Nate shattered and is still coming to grips with that. I loved how in "Three Card Monte" he was worried about Lucille 2.0, and that in "Rashomon" he brought up the hypnotism thing. Then there's the patience he's showing in his courtship of Parker. He's not the same cocky kid we met in the pilot.

As for Eliot, he seems to have settled most of his issues before he joined the team, but he's shown some subtle development as well. He's gone from being ready to ditch the team at the first sign of trouble (pilot) to being willing to throw himself between the team and whoever threatens them, even if those folks are heavily armed (Maltese Falcon and Jailhouse). These people mean something to him now, even if he'll never admit that out loud. *g* And I have a feeling we're going to learn a whole lot more about him come December.

@Ally:

I am perfectly willing to go along with Rogers' rule that "if Eliot worries, so should we." It's just … the "sniper" spray-painting Nate's apartment with bullets seemed a bit over the top. I realize that a series of single shots wouldn't have the same dramatic impact as, well, a hail of bullets, but, even as a child of the A-Team, it bothers me that a so-called professional could throw that many rounds into such a relatively small space and not hit anybody.

But if Eliot really thinks I should be worried, who am I to argue with him? ;)

I've noticed in a few episodes there have been references to "Kansas" I was wondering if one of the writers was from Kansas or if they just have a dislike of the state? Also I noticed Nate/Tim wearing a silver band on his left hand is there any signifigance to this as a Leverage story or is it something of Tim's? Thanks for taking the time to answer these questions.

@Michael…I am quite sure that steganography as a technique (and tools for it that you could run on a PC) were around in the late 90s (at least that's when I first encountered it). Back then the specific strategy was already "hide information in a picture".

NEVER said steganography hasn’t been around long, just said,” Some of the NEW tech items Nate has figured out, were NOT available…3 years ago.(Was just replying to an earlier comment). One of my good friends used steganography at his job back in 1988.

Remember that Rogers HAS said that a major inspiration for Leverage was The A-Team. *grin*

After Parker says "GHOSTBUSTERS", Eliot gives her the "seriously how old are you look" again and then looks away exasperated. BUT, just as the camera pans from Eliot, you see a big grin cross his face.

Was that Eliot showing his soft side for Parker and her quirkiness, or Christian breaking character - since obviously Beth is hilarious?

And does Jonathan Frakes get the best episodes to direct? Or do they become the best episodes because he directs them?

Anonymous said...

He's not the same cocky kid we met in the pilot.

I've seen him being quite cocky this season, annoyingly so, The Rashomon Job comes to mind but I know there were other times when I saw it. He hasn't changed in that regard.

SueN. said...

@Anonymous:

Hardison is still cocky, yes, and he'll probably always be cocky. It's part of who he is. Then again, they can all get pretty cocky. It's easy to do when you're the best.

What I meant by "he's not the same cocky kid we met in the pilot" was that he's grown quite a bit and isn't just that cocky kid. There's a depth and maturity to him that he didn't have before. For example, I'm not sure the Hardison of S1 would have been so willing to turn his back on that train to take out those militia dudes in "Gone Fishing" and risk his own life in the process.

As for "Rashomon," well, they were all showing off, each trying to prove he or she was the best thief. And Hardison had beaten Eliot, which is no small feat. Who wouldn't feel a little cocky at that?

Is the Italian one of Mycroft's (from BBC's Sherlock) many agents?

Just watched the episode a few more times, and it just keeps getting better and better, especially the scenes in the bar with Kane. Then something else struck me. Kane had been getting better and better iwth his little snarky faces and actions: in the scene in McRory's when he attackes the cop and then baits them to the other room, is Eliot sticking his tongue out before he runs another 'Kane'ism' that he ad-libbed?? If not, kudos to the writers for sticking that little gem into the scene, if it was, props to Kane for reading the humor into the chatacter and pulling what evey little 6year old boy wants to on his betters. BRAVO for this episode!!!

Any chance of Berg still writing Nate/Sophie even though she's on another show? It's probably crazy but you need someone.

whimseyrhodes said...

@briddie
The only part I'm having trouble with is the way Eliot insisted on going out to the domestic call. Was their cover so complete that there weren't any other cars in that sector?

The way I see Eliot going on the call is that somehow he recognized what the code was that dispatch used; my thinking is that he's been in Boston now for a while, and that he now knows some of the more major codes. Having some LEO experience: as far as why there were no other units at the call, when he radioed dispatch that they were taking it there was no longer any need for other units. Unless they were nearby and bored (which, in a city like Boston, would be rare) other units would now consider that call as taken care of and not budge into someone else's territory unless requested for backup.

@Calla
How did Eliot know what a code 16 was - domestic dispute with a weapon - why was he so insistent that they respond instead of letting the real cops do it.

A code-16 -domestic with weapon- is apparently a law unto itself in Leverage-land. Each city/county/area has it's own codes: in one area a 10-52 is a motor vehicle accident, in another its an accident with injuries. Each area is slightly unique. So, as stated above, I think that Eliot has merely been in the city for a while and in his capacity as Retrieval Specialist he takes it upon himself to learn the lay of the land, and that includes local police-lingo.

@pen_deat
Didn't the team see the Italian at the end of the season opener? When they opened the door to leave there were the gunmen and then she came down the staircase from the loft.

Yes, they all saw her at the end of that episode. But in this one, Hardison asks why won't you let us SEE her, as in, why won't you let us MEET with her. I watched it again as well, and it's a subtle turning of the phrase. They've all seen her, they just haven't met with her in a sitting-down, talk-to-her-face-to-face type of thing. Nate is protecting them in that sense, in that he's keeping himself in her mind's eye, and the team in the background.

@Archery
Sucky suckiness. And utter stupidity.

Easy fix, turn off your tv and don't watch, and then stay away from kfm with your nastiness. No need to bring the rest of us down. We respect and love John for all of the extra work he has done with the blogs and taking time out of his UBER busy schedule to talk to us here. He has said that we police ourselves well. Do us the favor of doing the same.

@Rob Pugh
The hair is a fighting liability. Yeah, it really is, although (and maybe its me?) I don't think tough macho men have the first instinct to pull it. That's what we wimpy women do (lol, not most of us, but, stereotypes, huh?). A man's instinct is punch, not pull....no?

And the whole headbutt with a baseball cap on....didn't they turn them around?

@Julia
I thought at the time that it seemed unlikely that Elliot would have taken a job from the side which used child soldiers, but if he was on the other side, the likelihood is that at some point the opponents he faced were children.

OOOOH, *Shiver!* Yeah, that WOULD mess someone up bad, even Batman!!

As a relative newbie here and in the absence of any new episodes, I've been reading way back through the blog (love the writing advice and the info on creating the pilot), and I noticed you mention Burn Notice several times as a show you loved.

I'm guessing you probably can't say as much anymore, but I was curious about your current feelings on the show, particularly this season. I found Leverage by way of Burn Notice (similar audiences and friends recommended it), but I found this summer to be very disappointing. I feel like it was just not so great writing, but a part of me also wonders if the problem was me being too much of a fanatical fan and not wanting the team dynamic to change.

I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on the season as a writer and a showrunner if you have the time or the interest. It worked out well for you guys though, since my love of Leverage grew as quickly as my disappointment in Burn Notice. Oh well.

Second the gun question. If my RPG-granted store of random knowledge serves me well, there was a Russian automatic sniper rifle (VSS Vintorez), but I'm not sure the look was right.

I was reading some old Tim Hutton interviews and have come upon this bit about Sophie's real name: "He also tries to con the members of the team who know her real name and they all keep it as a tightly held secret."

Has this scene been deleted because I don't think we've seen that in the show. And on the general lack of Nate/Sophie moments this season, have several Tim and Gina scenes been deleted or they just haven't been written in the first place?

Odie said...

Towards the end, when Vector is talking about the evidence against Moreau, he mentions several places that it isn't, including 'in the cloud'. What does that mean?

@Odie - computer term. It's a type of computer storage...I couldn't begin to explain it (where's Hardison when you need him) but Google cloud computing.

He's saying that he doesn't the info stored where anyone else can get to it.

hapworth said...

Okay, so there's no way I can keep up with ALL of the questions, so if I'm repeating stuff, I sincerely apologize :).

First, I love the show but feel like a lot of shows like this might have fumbled the ball at some point for the bigger story arcs. For instance, the whole Moreau thing... you bring it up, then completely forget about it for several episodes, and suddenly... it's the big thing in this one. It felt very thrown together. It was like it was thrown in just to tie up a loose end. I've noticed that in a lot of my favorite shows lately. Sterling felt way more of a present character in the past season despite not being in everyone.

It could also be that I have to rewind several times to get what Isabella is saying. Sure, she's easy on the eyes, but getting through her accent is a bit much sometimes. I guess it's just opinion, but I don't see her as much of a worthy adversary as Sterling.

It's sort of like my other favorite show, Chuck. The first seasons were about a group of baddies called Fulcrum and it felt more involved. You learned more about their organization, you saw what they were capable of, etc. When the new baddies became The Ring, it was just like, another episode as usual praying it'll just get back to the character development story arcs because they were so super mysterious and just happened to be able to pull whatever strings needed to be pulled. I guess that's what the whole Moreau deal feels like.

Another thing... you bring up something like Sophie's real name and tease us, but stop mentioning it completely until Sophie has that run-in with that mysterious woman from her past. And even then, we don't learn THAT much about her! Argh! Same thing actually happens in Chuck with Sarah's (the leading lady's) real name!

Same with Parker and Hardison's relationship developing.

I guess what I'm getting at is is this mostly up to the individual writers and which arcs they want to mention? Is this intentional? Will there be some huge payoff at some point?

I do love the show and I'm a fan of Apollo Robbins and LOVE that the team learns actual techniques or things are shown as accurately as possible. I'm actually jealous that he isn't also working on my other fave con show, White Collar (they could use a better consultant honestly...).

Anyways, I hope the next season is better than ever! Despite what sounds like a bunch of complaints, I did love what you did with the season! The team's portrayal of Sophie's accent had be rolling as well as Parker's reason for stealing the dagger in that episode was simply "WHAT?! I'M A THIEF?!" Also, Nate hypnotizing Hardison and really messing with his head made the relationship more complex.

Last bit (if you're still reading!)... I've noticed sometimes you guys will use the name of an actual con, but some of which I haven't heard of. Do you guys make up a lot of these or are all of these from your sources and they're just WAY better than mine? ;)

To my fellow commenters:
1)I live in Raleigh, North Carolina and we 'affirm'--solemnly.
2)I'm a firefighter/EMT and sometimes not dead people can just really look dead.
3) The color codes made perfect sense--it's how we pick our reds--so not necessarily a stretch for the regular guy/gal.
4) They are all grifters, to some extent, in most episodes. Sophie just happens to be the resident expert. But she'd really not pass for a local cop--she still has substantial value.

To the king of all that is great on TV:
1) Do you guys feel that we really need to know that much more about our characters? I know that seems to be the trend, the audience loves the show, falls in love with the characters, then the original meat of the show can take a back burner to character reveals and romance development. But, could you keep it going with just great stories and cons and personal growth? Is there enough material for that? Because it would be cool to look up in season 5 and say I have no idea what this character's relationship with his mother was like, but I love the guy he's become over the past five years.

2)The Moreau arc feels kind of weird. You said earlier that the eps were aired out of order causing for the Moreau arc to not really be viewed until the end, so maybe that's the cause. Or is it a storyline that you guys started and are allowing to lead you? In other words, is there anything I need to go back and re-watch or does the intricacy of this arc lie in the upcoming episodes?

3) I know location and filming is complex, expensive, and can be script-driving, but given that Moreau is an international bad man, we will see our heroes taking any trips in the future?

4)It seemed to me that Nate clearly recognized the danger as he looked out the window and said, "Something's not right here." But then it seemed that he didn't act on it. Did I mis-perceive that? Or was there a reason for his delayed response for sensing that he was being played?

5) Oh, and I know this is nearly a year ahead of the game but...ComicCon. Every. Single. One. of. You. Including you ;)

Love the episode! Lots of great little moments.

So, there's this blank piece of wall above the mantle of the fireplace at my friends' new apartment. We're all big Leverage fans and when we were trying to figure out what should go up there we wondered "Wouldn't it be awesome if we had a portrait of Old Nate to hang up here?"

But we don't.

So I was wondering: Is it possible to release poster-size prints of Old Nate so us extreme Leverage fans can hang them above our fireplaces?

'Cause that would be AWESOME.

Also, is it possible that they might pull a job to help save an Indian Reservation or something? 'Cause that would be kinda cool and its a spot y'all have yet to explore.

Thanks so much for taking the time to answer questions, John.

My question isn't actually about this episode, but is about the DVDs. I'm curious to know how the decision gets made regarding what extras to make available to different regions. It happens more often than not with US TV shows that the region 2 DVDs don't have even a fraction of the extras that are on the region 1 DVDs - for example, Leverage season 1 just came out over here and has a lot of very nifty extras on it...but no commentaries. I've never understood the logic behind having different extras available on different region DVDs, and wondered if you could shed any light on the matter.

Thanks again

oh for FSMs sake. I've had "buy Leverage S1 DVD" on my todo list for October (bit more money in that month) but I'm definitely not giving money to the makers of a product who treat me worse because I live in the wrong country.

Note: this does not mean John Rogers, this means whichever stupid idiot suit-wearing manager made that decision when either selling or buying the rights to that dvd-production

Now whether I'll just not buy the DVD or instead bite the bullet and order one from the RC1 area I'm not convinced, but I'm quite furious right now.

Sneaking in one last question that's begun to bug me (because clearly my Leverage love takes no hiatus).

Does the team know The Italian is threatening to kill them? Whenever they mention the penalty for failing to get Moreau, it's always, "Nate's going to prison," and never, "We're gonna die." Which would seem to me slightly more worrisome than Nate doing time in a dungeon.

We know Nate told them they were being blackmailed. But did he tell them exactly what the terms of that blackmail are?

Anonymous said...

JAILHOUSE JOB conversation - SOPHIE: She’s blackmailing us? NATE: She’s— she’s— sort of, yeah, yeah. PARKER: Sucks to be on the wrong side of that, finally.

DOUBLE-BLIND JOB conversation - NATE: Now listen, since when do you question what…SOPHIE: Since you went off the rails, and we had to pull you out of prison, and ended up getting us blackmailed, thank you very much. NATE: (pause) Fair enough.

You’re right, their death is NOT mentioned (unless I’ve missed it in another episode)

The hesitations in the victim's voice are amazingly heartfelt and really pull at the heartstrings (a little repetitive but very true.) He's a great victim.

Is it just me or does Nate want to keep his team away from the Italian because he's trying to protect them?

Parker is literally small enough to fit behind Nate. If her hair wasn't loose, you wouldn't have been able to see Beth Riesgraf behind Timothy Hutton.

Alice White's voice actually sounds different than Parker. It loses Parker's childish tone i.e. "Ghostbusters!" especially in their first meeting at the airport and in Parker's "upstairs from the bar" line. Regular crazy Parker tone is slightly higher in pitch and faster, I think.

"The-guy-in-the-bed-with-the-dead-hooker-con." nice subversion of the whole crazy but true con names. And then "the Cuban Sandwich" ?!?!? Is that Sophie's name for it or is that another real con? Why is the called the Cuban Sandwich?

Nate and Sophie seem a lot closer in their actions in this episode. Their beginning in the bar seem like they're a lot closer than they've been in a long time. And there's a lot less enmity/frustration/worry in the team this time around. Is it because Nate's finally stable or is it because an outside force is causing problems now, not drunk Nate or Evil Sober Nate or a combination of both? Nate has even come a long way(personal arc wise) considering what he thought about cons and thieves and his idea of himself, he drinks but not excessively and his cons are good and ruthless when they need to be, but not the bat$hit cons almost got you arrested cause Nate couldn't control my emotions and we- kidnapped-a-mayor-who-was-a federal-witness sort of Xanatos pile ups of last season's finale. This is Nate, the thief. A person who is doing something he's good at that he loves. P.S.: There was an actual question in there

From an earlier post
Why is it always Eliot who gets lost in the con (baseball, singing, coal mining?) Do you chose him on purpose or does it just happen organically?

Again Eliot gets lost in the con of being a cop - Hardison had to take the suspect - he didn't have a choice, but Eliot went on a call on purpose. What is it about him that gets him lost in the con?

Wasn't it a little too easy to get off with the Italian? Nate "My team with go after you." She could have rescinded all of her "he's a free man" machinations in with a phone call without his knowledge. I know she wants it this way, but Nate doesn't know that. She could have him back in jail in a second. Why is he not afraid she'll take him back to jail out of spite? Why does just saying "I'm no longer working for you cause you broke one of my rules. What was that rule, by the way? Why did he say "Enough" I lost that bit along the way somewhere.

How are the Italian's (and her boss's) hands clean? Nate could still pretend to be using her. How is instigating the Leverage team to take down someone that big "clean"? How would Moreau know that they were/weren't working on the Italian's behalf? If he does know that she was involved, why would it matter that she is not longer involved, she's the one who started the crew back up? (If I were Moreau, I'd be like - right your hands are clean, you just annoy them enough to make you leave them alone. They got the idea for this from you. You started it, you die! How would Moreau know that she is no longer involved now? Why does she think her hands are clean, she's the one who kept Nate out of jail. That seems like a pretty big indicator of involvement right there.
