Kidlock

Balloon Juice points us to an article in the WSJ (paywall) about how kids are not allowed to walk to school. Yaaaay, Culture of Fear. I would note that I once did the math for another blog post, and based on current crime figures your child is literally more likely to be struck by lightning than abducted by a stranger and murdered. But, hey, statistics is for weenies.

Peripherally interesting was this article on how late start times for high school produces better results. I've been digging a bunch of the recent TEDtalks on education (on of the shining uses of the iPads is video podcasting), and I think (or, hope) that we're on the verge of some serious rethinking about how we train kids for the 21st Century by preparing them for 19th century factory-work.

I know when I was in high school, my brain didn't come on line til about 9am. I know this because as an adult, it still takes until then for me to be fully alert.

But uh, no walking to school? Come on! Everyone thinks they live in Brooklyn circa 1978 but really, it's more like Pleasentville circa 1960 out there.

Harlan said...

Sir Ken Robinson's TEDTalk is one that changed my views on education-- or, rather, allowed me to not feel like I was crazy. My wife works in Academic Services at the college we both went to (well I'm finishing up this year, finally, at 27) and it's been wonderful to see them start a program geared towards identifying learning style issues with Academic Probation students to try and help them find the way that they will learn best.

I remember walking to school on my own, from the first grade up until sometime in high school when my friends and I got our first cars. Kind of ironic that parents today will drive their kids to the end of the driveway to wait for the bus (my neighbors do this), and yet not pay attention to their offspring talking to strangers on the internet until 3 a.m.

(Something I've seen firsthand when a user name I once had led to a bunch of teenagers somehow thinking I was some famous guitarist. You would not BELIEVE how many of these kids tried to strike up conversations and share personal details of their lives with a total stranger. Weirdly, the revelation that I am not a famous guitarist, that am a woman in my thirties and a mom to boot did not dissuade them. I finally had to ditch the user name.)

About late start times, when I was teaching high school, one of the districts I worked for took pride in starting the school day at 7:20 in the morning. And why? Because you'd have fewer discipline problems. For the first two hours of the day, kids were too exhausted to act out. Of course, they were also too tired to focus or remember anything you taught them, but hey, at least they weren't being a pain. Such was the district's rationale. I am glad to hear that this issue is finally getting some focus. Teenagers need more sleep, that's a biological fact. We should work with it, you know?

Rusty said...

Having shepherded one child through the trials and tribulations of public education, and with another just starting high school - with the unbelievable start time of 7:05 - I am really hoping that people finally start paying attention to the later start time research.

Although - I live in the Orlando area, although I am just outside of Orange County. Last year, the Orange County School Board, facing huge budget issues (as are all school systems), swapped the start times of middle school and high school, so that high school started later. They used some of the research that teenagers learn better at later times as support.

The parents went ballistic - why? One of the main reasons was that getting out of school later INTERFERED WITH THE KIDS' AFTER-SCHOOL JOBS. Unbelievable...their 20 hours a week at Burger King was more important that their education. Wow.

Shortly thereafter was an election for school board seats - and guess what one of the main platforms was? Switching the start times back, and of course those who were for it won, and the times reverted back.

Scary stuff......

John said...

"One of the main reasons was that getting out of school later INTERFERED WITH THE KIDS' AFTER-SCHOOL JOBS."

Wow, it must be nice to live in a world where high school kids get after school jobs just for movie money and not so that their families can afford food and clothes.

I'm sure that was not at all an issue for any of the concerned parents, all of whom are comfortably white and middle class like you.

I think we need to rethink the 19th Century factory work for children. They're hardier than they look. They fit in tight spaces better. There's no end to the jobs they could fill. You can just pop' em right down a chimney, don't even need a soot brush! They take up the lion's share of the household budget so there's no reason the little darlings can't be earning a dollar.

Columbus, OH smartly cut 80% of the school bus stops out of *their* budget this year and the little darlings are all crammed onto the public trans. They get free, unrestricted bus passes so they ride all hours and behave abominably. Ooooo, maybe we should look for a way to combine school with forced factory labor? With dormitories. "Earn While You Learn"...I like it!

No. No, I don't have children. Why do you ask?

Your Obedient Serpent said...

And on that note, BoingBoing just linked to an NPR report on Five Worries Parents Should Drop and Five They Shouldn't.

Sarah W said...

@Obedient Serpent:

That's a really good article - I'd love to see some honest odds for these worries.

If I were to be honest, I think drowning is my number one parental fear, followed by parking lot accidents (my kids aren't thoughtless, but they are short). Abuse is on the list, too.

I'm a practical paranoiac.

I'm not going to let me kids ride the bus, though - it costs $1,500 for the year!

SueN. said...

Well, our girls don't walk to school, mainly because … school is 12 miles from the house, and there are a couple of major highways involved.

But, yes, thanks to the Culture of Fear, kids don't play outside, ride bikes, walk to the neighborhood grocery (which these days is more likely a convenience store), or do any of the stuff we did when I was a kid (waaay back in the Ice Age). From pretty much the moment they're born, we convince ourselves and our kids that The World Is An Evil Place and Everyone Is Out To Get You, and then we wonder why they're neurotic and overweight.

And I can't believe there's even any debate about later school start times. You'd think institutions (and people and boards) who deal with teenagers would actually, you know, take a clue from teenagers! I have two of them. I know for a fact their brains are not fully on line even at 8:20 a.m. (their school's current start time). And they're even hazier because (for a number of reasons) we have to leave the house at 7 a.m. It's like driving with zombies. And watching zombies try to do math.

We bemoan the fact that our kids aren't interested in getting an education or that they hate school. Could it have anything to do with the fact that we make education as painful (and as backward) as we can? Not to mention that we've done everything we can to cripple schools themselves and make certain teachers do everything but teach?

Hi, yes, I live in Texas, and my only comfort is that my daughters go to a Catholic school, where they're being taught about Thomas Jefferson and evolution. My God, the irony …

Anna said...

Having recently graduated from a high school that starts at 7:30, I definitely noticed an improvement in the general atmosphere at school when we had two hour delays, and not entirely due to the shorter classes (though that certainly helped). Everyone was in a better mood and awake enough to actually find classes interesting.

Mark said...

May the educational backlash begin now! Please!

I'm getting really sick of the Bush/Obama school privatization, high stakes testing and teacher's union bashing schemes.

And yeah, no one walks to school any more, unless accompanied by two armed adults and wearing body armor.

Anonymous said...

Well ... you know, we've been using fear to sell things since ... way before Queen Victoria was born and made fear a hot commodity.

If you look at some adds from the '40's and '30's for things as mundane as floor wax and toothpaste you can see advertisers using very strong scare tactics. "Buy this or your husband may not get that promotion because his boss is coming over for dinner." Or the ever popular: "Use this toothpaste or your partner might leave you for someone with better breath and whiter teeth." Stuff like that.

I'm all for later start times for high school (and all school, actually). An 8:15 start time only facilitates sleep deprivation.

Kate said...

I don't happen to have a link to the study, but I read about a case where people were really looking at how much homework kids- High schoolers in particular- do each night and if it's really helpful at all. On average-in addition to their oftentimes 12-hour days- high schoolers will have about three hours of homework a night. And there will be no difference between their scores in ANYTHING and those of students who do 15 minutes of homework. In fact, there is mild indication that less homework is better. Perhaps they could spend that time better padding their college applications with extra-curricular activities?

In fact, the educational system is so dependent on students teaching themselves outside of the classroom that it would literally grind to a halt if Procrastination became a diagnosable mental disorder under the Disabilities Act.

Kate said...

@Revtrask Ooooo, maybe we should look for a way to combine school with forced factory labor? With dormitories. "Earn While You Learn"...I like it!

I have a friend who refers to High School as Legalized Imprisonment and Work-Release Program for Minors.

Liz said...

@Kate...Yep. Schools are under pressure to better educate kids. Problem is, teachers and administrators sometimes confuse quantity and quality. Two hours of busy work doesn't do anyone a damned bit of good.

When I was in high school, they tried to tell me I couldn't ride my bike to school. I did it anyway. They would tell me every day not to do it again and I would just ignore them. Eventually, they threatened to suspend me, so I locked my bike at the mini-mall next door. I see they've finally closed that loop hole!

Harlan said...

@Anonymous-- really? What was their rationale for not being able to ride your bike?

one of our local school sysstems switched times for elemetary and high school start times and for both groups attendance, test scores and grades improved. Only drawback was student athletes needing to be dismissed early for events.

As a person who was hit by a car on the way to the bus stop one morning, I still can't believe my neighbor drives her 14 year old to the high school 5 short blocks away.

Also, as a public service announcement, take the time to clear the ice from your windshield on cold mornings. It doesn't take that long and clearing a little hole directly in front of you isn't enough.

Anonymous said...

@John: I sympathize with many families that depend on the incomes of all members to make ends meet, but the point that Rusty might be seeing is that if those teenagers get a sub par education, they will never have a chance at the sort of careers that will allow them not to need their children to work at the Burger King after school to pay the rent. I guess there really are no easy answers.

Harlan said...

There really aren't. It's easy to say, "Parents are supposed to make a way for their kids, not be paid for by their kids," but that's honestly just an ignorant, generalized argument that doesn't function everywhere. It would be nice, but sometimes the logistics just aren't there.

In that scenario, I think Burger King (or whatever job you choose) can be accommodating in its shift design. I just left a crappy fast food job, but I was always impressed with our managers creating new schedules every week around when employees could work, and when they were needed at sports of other events for school. It wasn't easy, but they did it.

Rusty said...

@Harlan - that was part of my point. I guess I assumed more of my subtext would be understood.

I totally understand that there are families in that situation; I wish there weren't, but there it is. My older child has worked since she was old enough to, and every manager she has ever had was incredibly accommodating in scheduling her hours.

The attitude that came across in this situation was more one of "my kids won't be able to work, so they're just going to have too much free time to get into trouble".

And yes, @Anonymous, part of my concern also was that kids who have a better education might stand a better chance of breaking a vicious cycle.

And I hardly qualify as middle class...

Harlan said...

@ Rusty, my reply wasn't aimed at you but at the general discussion. Sorry if I seemed snarky there!

Rusty said...

@Harlan - I didn't take your comments as snarking at me at all, sorry if I came across that way....just using your comments as a basis to expand on mine.

Our current education system really worries me; but sometimes the attitudes of parents about education worries me even more....

LarryFleming said...

Come on John(tongue in cheek), the one thing we learn from history, is that we don't learn from history. The better educated we are the less powerful the government is.
Besides my dad walked to school, up hill - both ways, after he milked the cows, in a blizzard, with holes in his shoes. We have grown soft.

Harlan said...

I went through South Carolina's public education system, back when we were like, no. 50 in the nation or something like that. Packed into trailers, run down buildings and way overworked teachers. I eventually dropped out because I have a low threshold for B.S. and got my state diploma so I could take my SAT's and move on.

Once in college I met people from different states, countries and schools and was flat out embarrassed. My wife was mostly home-schooled and exposed to way, way more artistic activity than I was. Comparing our experiences, I understand parents pulling their kids from our public schools. I'm pretty sure we'll home school our kids for a while so we know how they learn best and can get their basics to them the best way.

I wish our schools were "cathedrals" to quote The West Wing, but I just don't see it happening anytime soon.

Anonymous said...

I'm living in one of the low income/high crime neighborhoods here in Cowtown and there's no problem with kids walking to and from school here. In fact, *we* all hide inside until the roving packs of loud, profane Future Miscreants of American have reached their destinations and are off the streets, lol.

js3 said...

I live in NYC, so none of my anecdotes would be relevant to 90% of the country...

I thought this was interesting though, a "safe cuddling romper" that sets off an alarm when kids are touched inappropriately. It was meant to spark debate, not as a real product (although the bullet-proof backpacks from years ago were real). What's most interesting on that page is the interviews with parents who openly admit that the dangers have been exaggerated, but who find themselves unable to relax about it.

I'm not a parent. I can only imagine how difficult it must be to turn off the fear, even though the numbers should be encouraging.

Funny thing about discussions on education. I think pretty much everyone agrees on the various problems with education in America. But absolutely no one is willing to make any of the sacrifices needed to fix it. Which isn't surprising. "Yes, I'll send my kid to the shitty public school and risk her not getting a great education so I can take the money I would have spent on a private school and fix up the public one for everybody's kid." Yeah, I can see how that'd be a hard choice to make.

SueN. said...

@jamessmith3, Hubby and I send our daughters to Catholic school and pay taxes that, ideally, should help improve the shitty public school they'd otherwise be attending. I also try to pay attention to school board elections and use my vote wisely for the sake of other people's children.

But, here's the wrench in the works: I live in Texas, where two things work against quality public education: the "we need a football stadium and academic stuff can wait" mentality, and the Texas State Board of (Mis)Education. Our moronic Gov. Goodhair has sold the education of Texas children down the river to the unholy alliance of the religious right and the Tea Party numbskulls so that he can pose as the next Sam Houston, standing for (the myth of) Texas.

Our kids don't stand a chance.

js3 said...

@SueN
The key word in your first paragraph being "ideally." The problem is holistic, which is why it's so seemingly insurmountable. This is also where our Great Culture of Fear comes in. Because some of your fellow taxpayers are voting for, say, politicians who seek to defang the evil communist teacher's union, due to that same fear. Nevermind that hypothetical pol's being drinking buddies with the stadium developer, for instance.

It's understandable when even parents who might agree with me finally have to say, fuck it, I'm homeschooling my kid. "Our kids don't stand a chance" kind of says it all.

I suppose I shouldn't say "absolutely no one..."

Anonymous said...

The "late start" link seems to lead to "walking to school". I'm wondering if the article is related to the National Sleep Foundation study and how the authors have taken account of some of the other variables - e.g. bedtime & amount of sleep as well as amount of daylight. Not rocket science, but it does take me longer to start functioning in the mornings if I've been surfing the web until 1am!

I walked to school in a group with other kids my age and no parents from age 5, and occasionally travelled by milk float!

ChelseaNH said...

We know so much about how people learn, but we can't put that information to good use. If you're interested, check out Brain Rules by John Medina (which addresses the start time issue, and also the homework issue).

I'm surprised "germs" don't rate higher on the fears list. Maybe it's just such a constant fear that it doesn't even register. "OH NO! Your soap pump has GERMS on it!" So does the air you breathe.

Julia said...

I live in NY and I've been letting her go to school by public transportation since she started middle school.

She promptly got her foot run over by a car because she wasn't paying attention when she crossed a particularly dangerous street.

I still let her do it, but I think I've earned the lingering dread.

Anonymous said...

Between my house and my daughter's first-grade school there's four registered sex offenders, including one named Jethro Aqualung.* So I don't feel too bad about ensuring she's at least escorted when walking to and from school.

[*: Okay, not really that name. But the count was accurate last I checked, which is crazy considering it's only three blocks. I have the state prison half a mile to the east and the state capitol building a quarter mile to the west, so it's totally a high-crime area.]

Eolirin said...

Oh, we've been rethinking education for a long long time.

But there's a big difference between realizing that the system is horribly horribly broken, and even between having a decent idea of how to fix it, and getting entrenched public school officials and education boards to actually make beneficial changes, let alone provide funding for retooling things. We'd need to reeducate many of our teachers at the very least, and that's not exactly something that'll avoid any resistance or be inexpensive (and considering the current political climate good luck convincing anyone we need to spend more money on public education).

Unknown said...

1) Fear is not based on probability. Emotions do not respond to logic.

2) High school schedules apparently do not respond to logic, either.

3) TED is terrific! Recommend it highly.

Actually, it's less about 19th century factory jobs - though those do play in - than medieval university schedules, where lectures did indeed begin at 6 AM or earlier (mirroring monasteries). It makes much more sense if you think about who was designing such schedules - the elderly professors and monks, who had the biorhythms of elderly folks, and naturally awoke at 5 AM.
