Loved the episode, every episode this season has topped the last so I can't wait to see where the finale ends up. Eliot fighting in the sound proof booth while Parker and Hardison were oblivious was pure genius. Also absolutely loved Parker dancing through the crowd pick pocketing. It wasn't just the idea of it but the carefree, almost spiritual expression on her face. Parker probably couldn't just go out on a dance floor and dance, but to combine it with her art made her lose herself. Maybe I'm over thinking that scene.

Also, the 'Pitchy' line certainly made me think of Princess Bride but I thought it was more of an American Idol/Randy Jackson reference as he seems to always arbitrarily use that word.

I did have some question/comments from your comments on the last episode:

"1.) You're closer shipping me and Mark Sheppard. "

Who wouldn't ship Mark Sheppard, he's a fucking genius. And thankfully he 'ships' about ever show on TV I watch and I'm very thankful for this. He's too awesome to be contained by one show.

"He's an Eccleston fan and kind of likes Matt Smith because of the Troughton similarities. And Amy Pond, well ... Rose who?"

Is this a personal opinion of yours as well or what you'd think Hardison would really say? Eccleston was awesome but Matt Smith has been a-mazing. Also, I'm a straight woman but I'd still crawl into Amy Ponds bed. She's beyond gorgeous:

"I'd say the bigger influence on the show, stylistically, was the British Life on Mars."

Huh? Don't get me wrong, Life on Mars is a phenomenal show (thank you BBC America for just existing) but I'm not seeing Life on Mars in Leverage.

Also, I saw you at Ringlers once. You were alone and looked like working on stuff. I contemplated sending you a Scotch and saying a quick 'thank you for Leverage' as I left but I didn't know if you'd find that creepy or intrusive. Do fans approaching you annoy you?

Loved the episode, great to hear CK sing but I think there should be more Eliot in general. I don't know why, but it seems to me like he doesn't get as much focus as other characters. Yeah, he'll get an episode to himself a season but overall it just doesn't feel like we see a lot of him. He comes in, kicks ass, and then fades back. Is this just Eliot in general, hang back until it's time to do his thing? He's certainly proved himself a good leader, maybe he realizes that a good leader can also recognize another good leader/chain of command and also follow. Sort of a military thing?

I also wanted to comment on a past episode. I LOVED Hardison playing the violin and I feel having it revealed Nate hypnotized him ruined it. It was soooo beautiful and the expressions on the rest of the teams faces (especially Parker) when he started to play was absolutely moving. I wish it had just been him doubting himself or not feeling comfortable revealing himself/letting his guard down outside of 1's and 0's.

Also, have you run out of places in Portland to film yet? We want you back next season! I'd love to see somewhere like the Grotto or Edgefield (one of McMenamins breweries/pubs/cool history and building locations) on the show. There are so many unique places around here.

first of all, thanks for the Dr Who clarification, that warms the cockles of my heart ..

second: Whilst I am rationally aware of the fact that there is this whole country-music thing out there somewhere in this world, it is still really weird for me as a European to accept it as something that real people get up to .. so also the costumes this episode were slightly off-putting for me .. I mean here in Germany, somebody wearing something like Nates hat or the boots/skirt ensemble Parker wears during the pickpocketing scene is .. kinda like really awful cosplay maybe?

Anyway, still liked the episode even though it felt sorta unreal.

finally, a question: don't you sometimes wish you worked in a world were using e.g. short soundbites as references was legal? Such as it is for the BBC? I totally always squee when they do this on Top Gear ("so it was time to hit the workshop and cue the music!" *A-Team theme starts up to visuals of a welding torch*)

@Ally, it wasn't just Bjork, but Parker's wig was a nod to Lady Gaga.

@Michael, I don't know if the crew would stand out in Boston but here in Texas Nate's hat and Parker's skirt and boots would fit right in. I've even seen cowboys wearing spurs, too, and that was in the library. They were definitely working cowboys and not cosplayers.

John, will we get subtitles for season 3? Pretty please?

Oh I didn't mean to question that this is reality and that these people are utterly sincere in what they do/are.

I was just trying to illustrate how and why it felt weird to somebody on a different continent ..
Also, to be honest, whilst I'm a die-hard Parker fanboy, that outfit was quite anti-sexy to me ;)

Now if the team could go to a gothic festival, that'd be more my kinda thing ;)

When Parker was doing the twirls while pickpocketing, were those shots of another actress' legs? If so, why?

ah, just thought of another question: It'd be interesting to know
a) how big a peak there was in online sales of Christian Kanes song after the episode aired
b) (somebody who's good with statistics needed here) how many sales went to places where the episode couldn't have been watched legally

Melissa in St Louis (MacSTL) said...

@michael

Would be difficult to judge an increase in sales of the single since it is a brand new song released the night before the episode aired. Christian has never played in concert (to my knowledge).

Now - the interesting stat would be did sales of his EP (originally released in March 2010) spike this week. I expect so.

hi...what did they use to make the sound of breaking bones? made me wince!

A general question for all who care to answer. Why not use the TNT Leverage forum for discussing topics?

There are Leverage fans scattered on multiple sites and it would be nice to have a place where everyone can come together and discuss various topics.

As a new fan, I'm kind of surprised that a show this great doesn't have a strong fan forum site like many of my other favorite shows.

I'm not saying abandon this site becase I love the question and answer format but it'd not really geared for the discussion format.

Tamitra said...

Fantastic Ep! Probably my favorite of the last two seasons. I save all my fangirl squealing for another venue and ask a serious question:

Were the parallels between Kirkwood saying (paraphrased) "Go ahead, tell me again what the computer said" and Eliot saying "Go ahead, say 'pitchy' one more time and see what happens" intentional? Were we supposed to read something into this? Are Kirkwood and Eliot more alike than we think they are?

Thanks so much for a great show, a great ep and for the chance to ask you questions!

ChelseaNH said...

@Tamitra:
Are Kirkwood and Eliot more alike than we think they are?

Well, they're both willing to use intimidation and violence to get what they're after. However, Eliot tends to be after things on behalf of other people, and he's far more discriminating about applying violence.

@ JoJo Dancer: We come here for Rogers. What did you think? Where else would you get real answers to real questions from one of the only people who actually knows?

Why doesn't Gina ever promote the show? Am I the only one who misses her and wants to hear from her about the show, Sophie and the Nate/Sophie relationship?

I loved Kane singing, but I loved even more the quieter Elliot moments that came with this episode. I love Elliot's fight scenes, but this was a really great other side (with a few really great fight scenes).

This is an odd question, but in your mind, does Elliot like being a hitter/retrieval specialist? You see Parker and Hardison really enjoy what they do, but Elliot's made a few comments lately about having made a choice to do what he does, and it being too late to walk away. And about being the only one fighting.

Anonymous said...

Anon 11:33am.

That's why I said, "not abandon this site". I love the question and answer format.

I just think a discussion format would be better for current fans and bring in new fans. You can have both.

But hey, whatever.

I'm not sure if Elliot shows some type of joy in being a hitter but he does seem to revel in what they do. Remember how he helped the other pull Nate back into the game. I also found it interesting that he was upset with Parker and Hardison for leaving him out of the mob score in The Future Job. They basically stole mob money.

ChelseaNH said...

I think Eliot just likes being irritated, especially with Hardison. He's just so good at it.

Beyond that, I suspect Eliot has the most regrets about the road he's gone down. As much as he made the right choices for himself at various points, those choices have tended to isolate him. I don't get the sense that the others have made quite so many or such deliberate choices.

Robin said...

Yay! Slightly more concrete backstory for Eliot! (Heartbreaking as it may be.)

Also, great shoutout to Christian's Kaniacs (Kenneth's Craniacs). I love it when shows poke fun at their actors in a loving way. Including having Kirkwood's ringtone be Dixie. ::teehee::

re: "You know who he sounds like?" -- I figured he meant that Eliot sounded like Jesse Jenkins, which would make it easier for Kirkwood to steal his song.

@tori-angell -- "But he's only wanted in three different countries? That's not as impressive a list as I was expecting."

Those are the only places where they've been able to confirm that it was him, probably from jobs earlier in his career. As he got more experience, he got better at getting away clean. ;) [see above, re: Eliot = Batman]

@Michael -- re: costumes vs. "normal" clothing

Well, you don't see a whole lot of Americans in lederhosen unless they're in fancy dress, so it's all relative. :p

@jenks -- I don't think Eliot was referring to his "life path" in general, so much as his Leverage Inc. family specifically as the thing he can't walk away from. Then again, I'm a sap that way.

Questions for Rogers

How many takes did you have to throw out because Tim and/or Gina cracked up at Beth's onstage antics?

Was Parker catching onto the metaphor from offstage done because Beth wasn't available that day, or just as scripted to hide her wacky costume until the next scene?

Beth H said...

I very much enjoyed the episode, too, so please pass along my congratulations & thanks to everyone involved!

This may be something you can't answer since you're a writer not a costumer or make-up artist: How often is Sophie in a wig for a con? It's fairly easy to tell when she's using her natural hair, but this time I wasn't sure if the neon streaks were part of a wig, or were some kind of temporary coloring.

Thank you for being willing to answer our questions!

Sounds like a case of the characters intent so successfully executed that it breaks through the fourth wall? Shocking? Distracting? Effective? YES!

I don't think it was shocking or very effective. I found it distracting because those scenes felt off to me and that pulled me right out of the story.

@JoJoDancer

I like this blog just as much as I do Leverage itself; I like the writers just as much as I like the actors playing these roles; they are just as important to me as the actors are.

Making out with a client in the middle of a con seems to be a big no-no on the list of Do's and Don't's.

Aimee is slightly different b/c she's his high school sweetheart. Non-clients are different because ... they're NON-clients.

A client + middle of con = disaster. As it nearly did for Nate as he calling for Eliot to come disable two or three thugs so he doesn't ... I don't know -- get the shit beaten out of him?

As John's said on a number of occasions Eliot's supposed to keep this team safe by seeing and dealing with all the physical danger issues that arise during a con. How can he do this if he takes out his earbud in the middle of a con so that he can lock lips with the client?

Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against Eliot making out with women or getting laid. But when you're on the con, you're on the con and it doesn't seem very wise for the main protector of the team to become distracted like that.

... Just sayin'...

Owlee said...

@Michael: Re sales in countries that couldn't legally watch - the song got promoted via Christian's twitter, his FaceBook and his official site, and was made available for non-US countries. You don't have to watch the episode to make grabbyhands for a new Kane song. :-)

Too awesome for words.

I loved the bit where Elliot was banging on the glass to get Hardison and Parker's attention during the fight. Those kinda sight gags just crack me up.

Can we vote to have Parker dress up in outlandish costumes for EVERY episode from now on? Can that be put in Beth Reisgraf's contract? Pretty please? And can there be a bonus for her if she also gets to do an amazing accent/gibberish along with it? Coz that? Made me laugh for a full five minutes.

Also, was Parker just exaggerating when she said she's been a cat burglar since she was 9? Coz I thought she was just a really good pickpocket, but went full-fledged thief under Archie's tutelage. If I'm just forgetting ages here, nix this question.

@dyluke

The girl playing Kaye Lynn is Alona Tal. Don't know if she is a singer or not, but she just finished off a stint on Supernatural (that I know of) and while she didn't really click there, boy, did she slot in well here. Yay for Elliot getting some girl! :)

So, seriously, Hardison doesn't control everything that happens on the internet? :D

Sam73 said...

@ snowyowl the problem for me as well is/was not to get the song, Chris has a great website and I got the song right after Leverage was streamed, but after moving to a country that decided to pick up Leverage after just THREE frickin' years ( and they don't start it until next month) you have to do sth to get your Lev-fix.
* just sayin'....*
remember how u felt between the break from S2 to S3?
And now imagine you get to a new home and figure there is no Leverage at all... not even your friends know what you're talkin about. Felt like hell....then you get the commercial : comming soon, Leverage! ( and then you hear the dubbing and almost choke on your coke) Nice...well, at least the gummi frogs are cheaper here.

Q for Mr. Rogers,
when did you decide to pick that ' I love it when a plan comes together' line?( thx for that by the way, was waiting for that since Chris played with his phone at concon.)
and I 've got an ep unrelated Q, I know we're going to see Chaos again, do we also get Apollo?
thx again for takin' some of your precious time to answer our Q's.

and thx for givin us Kaneiacs some food, could almost hear the simultaneous* sigh* all over the atlantic...
haven't decided yet what was more hilarious, the smurf-spencer scene or the Parker meets Gaga scene...
again thx and keep up the great work

What was the connection between the recording studio not being sound-proof and the location of the safe? I could understand Parker noticing that her shoes made different sounds when walking over the safe vs. walking over the rest of the flooring, but I didn't understand the significance of the music being heard one floor up. Was there additional recording equipment that I missed?

Anonymous said...

Was that girl really teaching Christian how to do a "G" Chord?

Anonymous said...

@anon, I think the safe location issue was that Parker could hear Eliot when she was standing on the tile above the safe, but not when she moved off of it, which is what alerted her to there being something under that tile other than soundproofing. That was my read of it, at any rate.

Kristin said...

@Anon - The studio is supposed to be soundproof. Since she could hear the music, she knew the ceiling wasn't soundproofed which meant there was something hidden there. If it was truly soundproofed (and nothing between the ceiling and floor) she wouldn't have been able to hear him recording.

I'm curious as to what Eliot was recording when Hardison said "he's doing one for him." Are we to infer that Eliot is a closet songwriter?

Unknown said...

Just had to share, if you didn't already know, that Australia has a snack food Hardison might just need to import:

Parker's Pretzels

YeomanRand said...

Not so much a question but some theorizing regarding Nate and the two thugs:

1) As we saw in "The Jailhouse Job", Nate can move pretty damn fast when he wants/needs to. So, he actually did take out those thugs on his own.

or

2) Nate pulled some sort of Hannibal Lecter-esque convincing the thugs they needed to fight each other.

Given Nate? I think either is plausible.

24jg13 said...

@Kristen - I think Eliot was recording a copy of Thinking of you for himself which would never be published, except on CK's websites of course.

SueN. said...

@Daisy Bookworm, I didn't say Eliot's taking out the earbud for a romp in the sawdust was wise ('cause it wasn't; in fact, it almost got him shot in "Order 23"), just that it wasn't terribly out of character.

Eliot is the protector and watchdog, and, for the most part, he does an excellent job. But he does seem to stumble a bit when his heart is engaged (see battered kid in "O23" and now Kaye Lynn). And, heck yeah, that could lead to big problems. Nate should probably give him a very stern talking-to. Or as stern as you can be with a guy who can take you apart. *g*

But I'm wondering (forgive me while I veer off into character analysis) if that's not sort of a "complication" that's arisen from his emotional resurrection. Eliot strikes me as someone who, previous to the team, and likely for his own survival, was emotionally shut down. Nothing personal in what he did. Clients were just clients, and the job was the job. If all went well, he got paid; if it went badly, he could die. There just wasn't any room to feel anything.

Now, the job's not just a job, but a cause, and the clients are people. He's getting emotionally invested, and he doesn't seem used to that. So I'm wondering if that's not playing havoc with his boundaries.

Yes, it is a problem (or could be), and, yes, it needs to be addressed. But I think it's one more sign that Eliot Spencer, super-soldier, is becoming human, maybe for the first time in years.

Ok. After rewatching the ep like 5 times and fully getting over the scene where Kane sings, I've come to agree with some others who commented that this isn't the best ep. It's still fantastic at many levels. Scary angry Sophie. P.Diddy/Hardison. Bjork-Gaga-Ke$sha/Parker. Darth Eliot/Spencer Smurf. Dancing lifting Parker. Team awe at Eliot's singing. Bo Duke doing complete metamorphosis into "absolute unscrupulous slimebag". Most brutal opening act so far (ok. not really sure whether I like this or not. but anyway.)

What I didn't like: Eliot taking out earbud to get some Kaye Lynn even though he knew tt Kirkwood's a cruel a-hole who will do anything to get what he wants. Lust blinded him to the potential dangers? It's one thing to do so in the Order 23 Job when tending to the kid, but this...just doesn't make sense.

@Alex: I've been living in Australia for 6yrs, and I've never seen Parker's Pretzels!! Crap. Gonna have to go hunt the blessed things out now.

Another question somewhat related to one a few pages up, why don't the cast members do much promoting? I haven't seen them on many talk shows or anything. Especially Gina, but the rest of them too. Is it cause they're all the way up in Portland and not near either of the big chat circuits? I'd just love to see them more, and not just in character.

Anonymous said...

Way off topic but...Mr. Rogers, have you guys ever considered doing webisodes as a way to promote the show or expand the back stories of the characters?

I would love it btw.

JoJoDancer asked: A general question for all who care to answer. Why not use the TNT Leverage forum for discussing topics?

Couple reasons for me. I already visit a number of places online, and so I always hesitate to sign up for yet another account, and remember yet another password. Plus, I tend to get much of my Leverage news and fun either here or on Twitter.

Another factor: I've visited network forums in the past, but found many to be poorly moderated, places where trolls and negativity abound. I guess I've got a little prejudice going on, and because of that never even thought to check out the TNT forums, though I often visit the TNT site itself.

But you raise a good point about the value of discussion, and having a central place for fans. So let me ask you: what are the TNT forums like? Are they active? Or let me ask the folks at large here: do you check out any Leverage discussion forums? Where at? What do you think?

USRaider said...

Once again, the entirety of the Leverage team (producers, writers, actors, etc.) has pulled off a fantastic episode. This season has been by far the most consistently excellent ep-by-ep in the series' history.

While Parker (Beth) was doing her Icelandic chick (Bjaga?), I had completely forgotten about Icelandic bottled water (when she asks the hapless studio assistant if the water was from "an iceberg"). I remembered once having something along these lines, looked it up and...there IS such a thing!

http://www.finewaters.com/Bottled_Water/Iceland/Icelandic_Glacial.asp

Was this known by your talented staff?

Everything has been asked by this point, so I just wanted to throw that in and congratulate you once again on a job well done!

".. Also, the issue with Eliot losing a fight is that this show seems to take a pretty realistic approach to the consequences of getting beat up. It doesn't take much to permanently impair someone, and many people he fights wouldn't let him live if he lost to them."
I agree. Eliot does one thing which is protect the team (hitter) and if he goofs up his job people die. Or at least get hurt badly. Never want to see him lose. If he did . . . he wouldn't be Eliot anymore. Just another guy who can fight a little bit. Nobody could trust him to protect them anymore cause he might lose again. Also he would lose his mystique . . . and become very ordinary and like all the other shows on TV right now.

Kristin said... I'm curious as to what Eliot was recording when Hardison said "he's doing one for him."
I thought that was the tape he gave Kaye Lynn at the end. I also had in mind it was the guitar music background to her song so that she would have a track to play while she sings since her brother can't play anymore. Like when Hardison put the guitar music through the speakers for her while she sang there at the end.

1) I invented a drinking game for Leverage and this episode resulted in my doing 17 shots of Jameson and drinking four beers. I pierced my nose a couple times and woke up in my balcony with rain coming down. BE PROUD.

2) You mentioned in commentary that Tim has tattoos. Will those ever show up in an episode? Maybe a post-prison addition, or something the team teases about? (I'd say 'just post pictures', but there's probably some pesky invasiveness issue there...)

Unknown said...

I'm told I have to share my observation for the evening:

Eliot is mean-and-threatening scare-you-onto-the-straight-and-narrow Batman, Sophie is charming, hiding-in-plain-sight Batman, Parker is appears-where-you-least-expect-him Batman, Hardison is angles-and-gadgets, find-your-secrets Batman, and Nate is I-know-what-you're-going-to-do-before-you-do, planning-for-every-contingency Batman.

Agree, disagree?

Anonymous said...

@ Liz Besides KFM, I visit TWOP daily. Also using Twitter for updates. After JoJo Dancer's post, I did check out the TNT forum and it looks okay (different topics, not negative, etc.) but I'm just not a big fan of threaded discussions myself.

Anonymous said...

First off, Nic, I'm glad you're not dead. I don't think I could have done that during my time in college.

Liz. The TNT site is cool. There is not a lot of traffic. But to be honest, not many of the Leverage forums are as crowded in comparison to the Glee or Lost forums. I think I mainly like it because many of the discussion topics are divided. I do feel you on making multiple passwords and dealing with trolls.

I also agree with the many who have pointed out that you have to love that this show has people who are willing to conversate and answer fan questions so openly.

Alex, I've always thought of Nate as a Reed Richards, Hank Pym type of guy.

What accent was Tim supposed to talk in when he answered Sophie's phone as a studio executive, couldn't quite place it but should've been British, right?

Oona said...

Eliot has taken on plenty of fighters who have given him a run for his money. The big guard in 304 may have been his match if it hadn't been for that well-timed explosion. He certainly wasn't staying down. And also, the guy from the First David Job did some damage.

As for other forums, I use the TNT forums a bit and they seem to be growing in users and discussions, which is nice. They have a good thread for folks posting their own ideas for future episodes. There are also a few posters who link to all the cast's tweets and recent news in the Season 3 forum, so its a good quick resource.

TWOP is fine, too, but posting is somewhat intermittent.

I do like to come here, because this seems to be where the bum rush is for episode discussions, but I think it may get old for Rogers to have to weed through all our ramblings to get to the questions.

Maybe John would consider a Question-only post and a Discussion-only post for after each show? (Assuming weeding through our nonsense actually does get difficult for him.)

USRaider said...

@Anonymous

Yes, it was a British accent. Sounded somewhat Cockney to me.

USRaider said...

OK, think I have a couple of questions for you regarding "The Studio Job."

Was it intentional for the video of Kirkwood's (John Schneider) character to have all the "American" symbolism in it? Many country music videos pull on that schmaltzy sentiment (eagle, flag, etc.), so it seemed too intentional. Especially loved Sophie's (Gina) line, "Oh, we should take him down just for that."

Secondly, my wife (whom I converted to Leverage, as well as her mother) asked how all of these cases are tying into the Moreau situation (she didn't see how a crooked Memphis radio exec made sense in a international conspiracy). I halfway explained that some would play in the end, while others wouldn't. Am I somewhat on the mark with this?

ChelseaNH said...

He gave her the master tape of the album she (and her disappearing brother) recorded for Kirkwood.

Damn, people bitch for weeks that Eliot gets left out with the couples business, and then when he finally gets a chance to hook it up, he ain't doin' it right. You just can't win.

The only time we see these people in a meaningful setting is during a con, so when are they supposed to insert the Eliot lovin' scenes for our viewing pleasure?

Besides, Nate deserves to get his ass kicked in the middle of a con once in a while, don't you think? Perspective and all that. Apparently he doesn't always need Eliot to save his ass.

"Anonymous said...
Was that girl really teaching Christian how to do a "G" Chord?"

Kaye Lynn was teaching Eliot Spencer how to play that whole part of the song, which he seemed to be getting mixed up.

Oona said...

Not my favorite ep. There were a lot of highs and lows. Hot guitar teaching scene, great comedy moments but like a few folks, I wasn't crazy about Eliot taking out the earpiece. Another option: she watches Eliot kick the goons' ass, gets even more aquiver at his skills and they pounce on each other after Nate gives her the money.

But I'm thinking the real purpose of that scene was part of the emphasis on Nate's new (or newly featured) mind fuck superpowers. I'm assuming this is leading somewhere . . . perhaps towards a big finale moment?

The one thing that bugged me most from this ep.

Last Act:
-team gives up on con
-Eliot growls, jumps on motorcycle
-saves the cute blonde Southern girl's livelihood

Compared to the Two Horse Job last act:

-team gives up on con
-Eliot growls, jumps on motorcycle, er horse
-saves the cute blonde Southern girl's livelihood.

Is there some basic blue print for Eliot centric episodes in that writer's room somewhere?

@sam73 : Oh, believe me, I KNOW. I'm in the same country as you. *g* And it's frustrating indeed. What you said about the dubbing leads me to expect the worst. :-(
I just didn't like the OP's implication that *everyone* who dl'ed the song outside of the US is someone who watches illegally. Sounded a bit like he/she wanted to track them down, but that might have been overreacting from my part, sorry!

Anonymous said...

I just gotta ask all those who don't like that Eliot took out the earbud... Would it have been better for him to leave it in and let the whole team overhear? A Suthun gen'man wouldn't treat a lady like that!

Tori Angeli said...

Taking out the earbud was risky, but somewhat understandable. It would suck to have to be at everyone's beck and call 24/7, and Eliot just wants a little time off the clock. However, pausing mid-rescue to sign an autograph was wrong. Funny, but wrong.

Nina May said...

And then there's the whole "Eliot never screws up, he's too perfect" contingent from last week. No matter what they do with Eliot, someone's going to complain.

Signing the autograph – maybe by that time he heard Nate getting things under control? Doesn't really matter to me, but it might to some.

Also? Nate definitely took them out with the power of his mind.

Before: "So, you guys work out together?"

After: "They got into some argument about sets vs reps, I don't know."

Tori Angeli said...

When I said "wrong," I meant as an in-universe choice. As a viewer, I liked it.

I'm just saying that if it bothers people out of universe, etc. Personally, I love watching characters not always making the right choice because some writers can sit around for weeks looking at the situation and figuring out what it should be. I like bad calls and mistakes, as long as it's not done just to advance the plot, idiot-ball-wise.

So my wife has allowed me to use her powers as a woman to make things not true into facts to grant you the wish of declaring differnet TV shows and books part of the Leverage universe. So which shows, movies, or books would you like to be part of the expanded Leverage Universe?

Will the next time we meet the FBI agents will one of them be over Parker because of a cute new blond in his division called Veronica? Does Sophia have a long standing rule not to run cons in Santa Barbra any more? Is Maggie secretly a CIA agent? Sterling actually a demon from hell?

Anonymous said...

I would love to see Leverage infiltrating OTHER universes. Can't think of any I would want to come into LeverageWorld, though.

And not just the main characters. I'd love to see Interpol agent Sterling on some other crime shows.

Also, no one gets over Parker!

I just didn't like the OP's implication that *everyone* who dl'ed the song outside of the US is someone who watches illegally. Sounded a bit like he/she wanted to track them down, but that might have been overreacting from my part, sorry!

Whoops, sorry, no, you misread that one I think. Was meant more in a "see how many there are of us? And we're fans, not evil thieves. See, we even pay for material related to the show. We'd pay for watching the show as well if there was a fucking way to do so". (as in all the amazon/netflix/iTunes things are restricted to US only ... and our only choice over here is to wait for 3 years and then get a horribly dubbed version shoved down our throats. 'cos wanting to watch early and in english is PIRACY, you know. *spit*.

sorry, rant over.

Anonymous, I feel for you. I'm a mess until Amazon posts it for sale (only a few hours).

Greatest episode ever! Very hilarious and entertaining.

My question: (forgive me if it's been asked but there's 269 comments and I just can't read them all) When will Tom Wopat get his role on Leverage? You've gotta have Luke Duke on there now.

There are some fertile imaginations at work, looking for reasons for the Memphis setting. Occam's Razor, people: Kirkwood would be a little fish in a big pond in Nashville, and couldn't do what he does. But in Memphis, it's a different story. Just because Memphis is known for blues doesn't mean there's no country music industry.

Well, that's the big problem with that scene, though isn't it? Is it really part of Eliot's personality to blow off part of a con to get laid or was that scene there for the purpose of Eliot getting laid and showing off Nate's mindtrick skills? Rogers himself has said that Eliot is the one who best understands the risks in each con. Is taking an earbud out in hostile territory for a piece of tail the kind of mistake he would make? The guy who later walks away at something more important than a little sex because he's chosen a certain path? Or was it the most convenient way to write in some nookie for him and to give Nate a moment?

I don't have a problem with Eliot getting some, but clearly, there were other ways to have that happen without him doing something that appeared potentially out of character.

And of course, if it were just Eliot giving you an "ummm, I'm not sure" moment, maybe it wouldn't seem so bad. But in context with with Hardison forgetting the disk and the team being willing to cave on the immediate job when it was definitely not game over, I think you can make the argument that the choices and mistakes were just to advance the plot, idiot-ball-wise.

Maybe it's not what the writers intended, but I think its telling that there are more than a few viewers were taken aback by one or more of those scenes.

I HEAR YOU. *sighs and shudders* Thank God for DVDs and codefree players... And sorry for the misunderstanding!

@SueN; Though, sadly, hubby and I had to explain who Bjork was to our daughters. You ever tried to explain Bjork?!

I'm Icelandic, so yeah.

All. The Damn. Time.

Just watched the episode and think I woke the neighbors with my howls of laughter. "This water isn't from an iceberg!" just about killed me, I had to pause the show to get my breath back.

Sam73 said...

@gd ...what...wait... u think Sterling isn't actualy a demon from hell...? Oooops, my bad I guess...

....and about the piracy thing...I did pay for S 1 and 2 and I also will for S 3 the minute the DVD is out, also I still pay my bills for the cable comp. I just can't watch at home cuz I'm a bit...well...relocated, does that count? I didn't meant to offend anybody, folks. Just sayin'

...and I promise I will watch it here, no matter how bad the dubbing might be, cross my heart...*g*

Watching the ep on TNT TV right now. One little nitpick - whoever did the set dressing for the club may not have seen the sound room for a club. I've been a sound tech, and been in the sound room in similar sized clubs. And now, the nitting and picking:
- sound room is too clean - a counter like that would be covered with, well, stuff. The sound booth is generally someone's office.
- The mixer is way undersized/powered for a venue of that size. Compare to BB Kings, or even Lion's Den in NYC
- The rack (effects, compression, etc) that is in the background to Hardison's left in a shot would be mch more within reach
- Club like that, the lighting board (tiny, of course) would be right there with the mixer. THe mixer would be up to date, even digital. The lighting board, on the other hand, would be some relic from the 70s on which half the faders don't work.

BTW - pretty good job on the studio. Also, the base on a mic stand is F'in heavy to have shoved in your chest. Ouch!!!

Great episode!

I was so excited for this episode because I wanted to see HOW Nate was going to talk Eliot into Singing! In front of people!?

I was sad when we didn't see that part. So . . . How did it happen??

@Eitan

BTW - pretty good job on the studio.

Well - it should be because it was filmed at an actual studio and not a mocked up set.

First - loved the ep. Like JoJo Dancer, I was not sure about an ep focusing on country music. I mean... they twang and all! But you guys sold it.

"Smurf Elliot" just has to make a very short reappearance, maybe in the comms. "Hardison!!!"

"I don't think it means what you think it means" is clearly Princess Bride, but for the word itself, I was thinking "pitchy" was an allusion to Steve Albini's excoriation of "punchy" - see "The Problem with Music", http://tinyurl.com/pwmusic .

And speaking of that, lest anyone think "Mitchell Kirkwood" is an exaggeration, he's simply a personification of the entire RIAA-controlled industry (well, aside from the literal breaking hands and murdering part); I'm afraid Kaye Lynn's problems are just beginning. Read the last section in Albini's article, the one headed "There's this band". ("Some of your friends are probably already this f'd.") See also http://tinyurl.com/clovemath , the section headed "Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA)". The industry steals everybody's songs.

Not to take away from the ep - it's just another example of how Rogers and Co. aren't exaggerating the evil that's out there; they're understating it by a factor of ten, at least.

Lydia said...

First, great ep. liked it.
Second, I know people are thinking/said Parker's persona was similar to Bjork (the swan) but I was thinking Lady Gaga...
either way, hysterical !!

Hey, this is actually the girl at the Leverage Convention(Portland) to whom you said "For YOU, this season he'll get to play his guitar." When I asked if Christian would get to play on the show some day. Just wanted to say Thank You all sincere-like and try not to fangirl out like crazy.

I'm kind of wondering if Christian's real fans inspired the part where Hardison sics Eliot's fans on the bad guy. Y'know, because we apparently pestered all you writers to death to get this episode. Also, if there's ever anything you need a bunch of Leverage fans in Portland for, you just have to say the word. We live about fifteen minutes from down-town and I'm recruiting more and more Grifters by the day.

1.) I know everyone probably thinks of this as the "Christian Kane" ep for obvious reasons, but Parker's crazy-European-singer thing pretty much stole the show for me. How much of that was scripted vs letting Beth play around a little? (Not necessarily improved while filming, but developed once she'd seen the script, during whatever tiny amount of rehearsal they get, that sort of thing.)

2. The fan page. No questions, just amusement. It's almost like you know Chris Kane has some very dedicated fans or something... (To be fair, the couple of times I was lucky enough to catch a show when he was in London and I lived there, it was a seriously fun time. If anyone happens to be where he's going to be doing a show - go!)

3.) Another not-a-question - The exchange with Hardison and Eliot in the recording studio was fantastic. Dialogue, timing, Hardison's little swaying with the music thing.

4.) How many times DID Chris end up having to sing that same line? (Btw, Aldis did pretty well with it, too. Violin, pilot's license... Career as a music superstar next on the list?)

Kris said...

I gotta add a question 5.

5.) Mark Shepperd, Alona Tal... Can Jensen or Jared making a guest appearance be far behind? ;) (I know, scheduling - but I'd love to see Jensen get a chance to do the whole evil-bad-guy thing. Oh well. I'll just entertain myself imagining the Leverage crew running into Sam and Dean Winchester.) (I bet that fanfic actually exists, but I am not looking for it.)
