Guitar Friday: Unconventional

by M A N @roquesdoodle

(NOTE: Mike, I embedded the tagged videos. Thanks for keeping the blog going! See you when I get back from Portland - JR)

There are as many styles of playing guitar as there are players. But there are some who use the instrument in ways that leave the rest of us players just sort of scratching out heads and saying to ourselves, "How did you even THINK of that?"

I'm not talking about the kind of pyrotechnics that we've all heard before, but ways of playing that most guitar players wouldn't even consider. Guitar as a drum? Playing melodies with the tuning keys? Fretting notes by rolling your hand knuckle over palm? Never would have occurred to me. And yet there are players out there who reinvent the instrument just by the way they play it.

This is Ronnie from Botswana. I forget how I stumbled onto this video, but I just love how she uses every part of her hand to fret the guitar.

My next example is Andy McKee performing "Hunter's Moon." I don't even know how to explain the mastery over the instrument he has, so you'll just have to go and watch. Just. Sick.

Lastly is a guy named Michael Kelsey (and a fellow Hoosier). I first heard about him in college (oh so long ago). At the time, I thought I was all cool with my pony tail and Dream Theater sweeps until a neighbor gave me one of Michael's CD. I pouted for a week after hearing him. This was before the days of Youtube so I had no idea how he was doing what he was doing. When I finally looked him up on the internet, I actually had a chance to see how he does what he does. I pouted again. Here's his winning performance at the 2004 Guitarmageddon showdown.

Ok, I had to forward that to a few friends. My attempts at playing guitar ended in blisters and pain. I might have had more success if I'd thought outside the box!

Have you listened to any Joseph Spence? His vocals are as striking as his guitar playing, but his playing is fantastic. I don't know if there's video available, but listen to something like this -- "I'm Going to Live That Life".

Sadly, the video is no longer on you tube, but myspace still has one of my favorite songs from one of my favorite hometown artists,MN native Dan Schwartz

Well I was proud of myself playing C, G and D...Rod Stewart made a career doing that. Anyway, I wish I have the imagination to play like these three.
I always liked watching Stevie Ray Vaughan and his style too. Never could do anything this talented.

i have, in my travels heard some amazing stuff done by folks, like that lady in ghana, who get ahold of a guitar and figure out their own ways to make music from it.

right now, i'm in jamaica, home of some ridiculously creative types. if you discard 55gal drums in the islands, next thing you know there are folks jerking chicken on the streets to the lively tunes of their bands.

one of the most wild displays of virtuosity i've ever heard on the guitar was the gypsy manitas de plata (silver hands). like many other self taught players he had a lot of things that you might call bad habits or even wrong, what he did that night, by himself on the stage at grady gammage in tempe was astonishing.

he did a sevillana where he crossed the bass strings of his guitar and was slapping out a snare drum rhythm, bass drum came from his fingers taking a moment here or there to thunk the body of the guitar, then he did trills and other melodic improvisations with the treble.

a whole marching band.

Ronnie in the first video is pretty clearly not a woman...

Wow, those are some amazing guitarists. I've drummed on my guitar before, but they take it so much further.

I'll have to try the hand over top playing. Seems like it might be easier for me to reach some things if I can get my brain to reverse the fingerings I've learned. ;)

Thanks for sharing these!
