Question Post for Leverage 210: "The Runway Job"

I'm elbow deep plotting Ep 301. There's blood and screaming and colored pens all over the cracked tile in this basement room ... anyway, post your questions, comments, etc. in this thread, and we'll do the usual post-game shortly thereafter.

How did Kane react to being put in guyliner? It was hysterical to see BTW

Christian was asked the 'Top Five "Distinctive" Things Eliot Would Notice', he answered but said it was a Rogers question, so what is your answer?

Sadly, I will not be seeing tonight because I have no cable. However, I will see it tomorrow when it hits Nexflix. And thanks to my PS3, I can see it on the big TV. Oh yeah, Hi-Def grifting, baby!

I've been watching the Best Episodes all day. Can't wait for tonight.

I do have one sort of overarching question, one of those that has a long wind up (sorry). Elliot has always treated Nate with the most respect, deference, and concern of the group. He may complain about doing something, but he jumps up and does whatever Nate asks without arguing. In the series pilot, he was the one who voiced the most concern about Nate. Even when he got angry with Nate (in the Snow Job) it was because he feared Nate was not in control, not able to handle things.

So, why? What's in Nate and Elliot's relationship or past or understanding of each other that gives Elliot such complete trust in Nate? We've seen some expansion of relationship between Nate and just about everyone else (Mostly Hardison and Sophie, of course). So what's up with Nate and Elliot? Is Elliot just that kind of guy, the second in command sort who takes orders?

Also -- Parker has only one name, but everyone else is called by their first name, except Alex Hardison. He's always called by his last name. Why's that? Just a thing? Did I miss something?

Good gravy, I think about this show far too much for someone who isn't paid for it.

Okay, I have to ask. Parker's "hot" comment about Tara... is she canonly bisexual now or was she just trying to mimic Hardison and Eliot? You never can tell with her... haha.

Either way, OMG I LOVED IT. Overall this is definitely one of my favorites.

A great start to Season 2.5, Rogers! A fine "here's the real Tara" episode, too. I hope the TV Wall conversations with Sophie will continue in the remaining episodes, they're great bits of character interaction.

I guess my only real Leverage related question is if there is any news on the Season 2 DVDs yet? Are they going to break it into 2.0 and 2.5, a la Battlestar Galactica? Or wait and release it all as one set. And will it be out in time for ConCon? (Not likely, but had to ask.)

Denita said...

Loved the TV conversations with Sophie-great way to keep Gina a vital part of the team. I really liked the moment when Eliot couldn't or wouldn't say that he trusted her, mostly because I think at least one member of the team should still have some reservations with Sophie.

I thought it was a wonderful half-season opener and am looking forward to seeing how Tara fits in with the team.

Oh and loved the guyliner thing and I second Caitlin's question. How did Kane react to it?

MelodyAnne88 said...

Yay! I love these posts!

1) Guy liner...EPIC FUNNY. Mom and I laughed for a good minute.

3) Beth is amazing at physical comedy... just sayin. When she fell off the stage.. Classic.

3) And now for the question. There will be NO Tara/Nate right? The whole "Sexy because he's broken" thing did not sit well with me (Apparently it didn't with Sophie either! haha!)

Havenward said...

First? I loved the episode. It was a strong lead in, and I think it shows Tara (as Tara, and not that cover) off quite nicely. I also like that the team (and Eliot specifically) still have a few reservations on trusting her. I'm really looking forward to the rest of the season!

A few questions... Nate was obviously having control issues with butting heads with Tara. It seems like the team is worried that he's starting to slip (and he did come across as a little manic, or sloppy) but the risk he took was after he and Tara had come to an understanding. You've said before the back half of the season is more geared toward Nate - is he really starting to slip, or is this just team conflict?

You guys were awful teases with that conversation between Tara and Sophie. Will there be any hints as to what Tara owes Sophie for?

And finally, I know you guys are gearing up for s3. You've said before that the second season can be a little experimental. Are there any story telling devices (ie: flashbacks) that you want to bring back that you stopped using, or anything you found in the second season that you're going to continue with?

And thanks again for doing these - I'm sure you're busy as it is!

Becky said...

Loved the episode.

Is Gina going to be back (and not just on a tv/computer screen) by the end of the season or are we going to have to wait for season 3?

Beth Pettit said...

@Sherri

Maybe Eliot is just used to a more military mind frame. You don't question orders if they seem within reason and you do your job. I would love to see more of Nate and Eliots story too. I don't think we've been told yet how Nate knows Eliot have we?

@OhShinyTomato

Why does Parker have to be bi because she said Jeri Ryan was hot? I think they are both smokin' hot and sexy but I'm completely straight. Maybe Parker can just appreciate another woman.

I can also understand Eliot being the one to not completely trust Sophie yet. He seemed to be the one most hurt/offended with what she did in the First David Job.

I can't wait to watch tonight episode! This show has been on hiatus for far to long!

Matt D said...

Great, fun episode.

Question #1: Who on the team wrote the fake fashion article? Was it just a cut and paste job or was it something more elaborate?

Question #2: I kind of want to see the team go after NBC right now. Er.. BCN right now. Can you manage that for season 3?

Caitlin said...

Gotta say at the start that I loved the episode! It was absolutely great and had me shouting at my television! Thank you for a great mid season premiere!

I just wanted to know, because a friend and I were discussing this and I'm genuinely curious. At the end, when Nate and Sophie were talking and then he started shouting at her, he sounded a lot like he did when he was drunk before. We both also noticed that his hair was ruffled like before and his eyes were a tad bit bleary looking, also as before. While we know that Nate is going to be drinking again in the next episode thanks to the preview, was Nate drunk in the final scene of this episode.

And, if not, was the fight with Sophie what made him reconsider staying sober?

Looking forward to next week! Hope you all have many seasons to come!

Because I'm a femslasher and I just have to ask. It made me happy. Though, in all honesty, it really did seem like just another Parker-mimic.

But that won't ruin my happy place. lol

Loved the episode. Could we maybe get some more blood in the fight scenes...just a thought. Again I LOVED IT LIKE A FAT KID LOVES CAKE!!!!!

SueN. said...

This was a fun episode. Nice to see the team tackling sweat shops.

Parker on (and falling off) the runway was a hoot, as was Eliot advising her on what to wear. He just keeps pulling out bits of surprising knowledge (empire waistline?!)

Loved Parker's "hot" comment; it's so *her*. And Eliot's guyliner. (Though I'm still holding out for chaps and spurs; I'm still shallow. *g*)Also, the return of The Glasses. Yay!!

We're really starting to see Nate's cracks, aren't we? It'll be interesting to see how the team reacts as they begin to see them, and whether there will be any conflict between old survival/self-preservation instincts and newer "family" instincts.

Also, for the record, I like Tara (and Jeri Ryan). I think she brings an interesting new and rougher-edged chemistry to the team. And, possibly, an outsider's perspective on Nate's, eh, issues.

(And how close are you to snarling, "Stop whining, people, Sophie will be back?")

I hate to be one of those annoying folk, but...
Is the almost instant Netflix streaming gone? Will the new eps ever be available or no go? Thanks!

Murphy Jacobs said...

@ Beth Pettit

Military, maybe, but I think that would show up elsewhere. Elliot displays some very interesting ideas/issues about trust -- while he was the one who most emphasized how he preferred to work alone in the beginning, he was also the one who seemed the most hurt when the group broke up and the most eager to resume their work for the others (more so than what they were doing). Parker, Hardison, and Sophie expressed more interest in the action, the stealing, the doing of things -- Elliot SEEMED to be the one most "attached".

And it could be I've watched my season one DVDs too many times. :) I see hints and inferences that interest me (not in a slashy way, I just can't see that) and I'd really like more info about Elliot (that aren't just about how tough he is or the dangerous situations he's been in, or how many different women he's dated/slept with).

Then again, I want more about Parker and Sophie, too. Hardison seems to be the most forthcoming about his personal history.

Jeez louise, but I think about this show way too much! It's such a lot of fun! Most TV shows just can't carry the weight of lots of debate and curiosity and discussion. Leverage has me in its grip because, even though the show itself is light and fun and occasionally hilarious, it's also thoughtful, with deep complex characters and tons of good people stuff (technical term there ;) )

Denita said...

I know! That bit went by so fast that I couldn't catch it all but I thought it was funny as hell.

Those are some of the many reasons why I love this show so much.

#1 Tara had an interesting look on her face as Nate handed her the envelope containing her 'cut.' Will a sense of guilt develop, and will Nate intentionally facilitate it?

#2 Sort of springboarding off the previous question: will there be another instance, such as in the Lost Heir job, in which Nate doesn't exactly let everybody in on the penultimate plan?

Klep said...

I have a few questions
1) Did Nate have issues with Tara because he doesn't trust her or because he hates not being in control and Tara wasn't his choice?

2) What was with Nate's angry tone when asking Hardison for the picture of the car? Was he shaken from being blown up or is Hardison still in trouble from the Ice Man thing?

3) Is Nate falling apart without Sophie or is he just falling apart in general? He seemed so flustered on most of this job, and maybe it's just because Tara challenges his authority so much but it still makes me scared.

4) How many models has Eliot dated?

Rebecca said...

No questions, although I eagerly look forward to seeing the answers to those already asked. Just wanted to say, in case anyone's keeping track, that I thought it was a fabulous season opener. Rekindled all the excitement from previous seasons. Kudos to all the writers.

Loved every scene, and relished every member of the team in each one...mostly. Some of Jeri Ryan's feel like she's trying too hard to be tough. And, of course, I don't have the affection for her or her character that I do for the others.

But top faves are "Neckline's a little weak." and, like many others, Parker's hot comment.

Super excellent episode, all the way around. Congratulations on an incredibly wonderful season opener.

Kristin said...

Absolutely loved the episode! I do have to mimic the house smoking and *then* exploding... that seemed a little off. I took it as a way of luring people closer to the house in case there was a fire in there and they wanted to go in and save that person (if that makes any sense at all... or maybe just willful suspension of disbelief!).

My question is about Tara's cut: if Nate gave the client fifty thousand dollars, which is what they got from the mark, then where did Tara's cut come from? Who is paying for Tara?

I am a hardcore Nate/Sophie shipper but I gotta say: Not enough Hardison in this ep! He had some GREAT one-liners but his role seemed a bit lacking this time. Dangit! I know you only get 43 minutes and its impossible to give everyone screen time but I missed his quips!

Unknown said...

@Sherri - With respect to the "Everyone is [First Name] but Hardison is Hardison, not Alec," I believe John said once that it's because Hardison sounds better when said through clenched teeth.

Calla said...

Welcome back! It was so good to see the team again!

One of the repeats on TNT today was "The Ice Man Job" and while Nate was busy distracting the mark, Eliot was directing Parker and Hardison on the vault break-in while keeping Nate informed. It was a difficult situation and I thought Eliot handled things pretty well - he has potential. Will we see Eliot running a con in the future?

For tonight's episode, I really liked that we (the audience) didn't fully know how things were going to play out and Tara adds that unknown element (we haven't yet learned to trust her any more than the team has). But Tara seems very intent on doing things her way and she seems like she doesn't really want to be part of a team (this one or any other one).

Sophie said that Tara owes her - it seems like it might be something very big/significant - will we find out why Tara owes Sophie?

Thanks again for new eps! Have fun writing 0301!

Scott said...

My mother asked me this the other night: What style(s) of martial arts does Eliot practice?

sjrSpike said...

So we finally get to the (offscreen) Eliot/bear wrestling. How many did it take to hold Kane down to get the guyliner on? ;)

And, LOVED the ep. Also, I approve of the +Eliot in the TNT ads; much better than season one, that seemed to focus on everyone else. I agree with others, would like to see more backstory/interaction between Eliot and Nate.

Finally, a real question: If Tara is SUCH a good grifter/thief, why didn't Nate recognize her/chase her for IYS? Hard to believe she never stole anything insured by IYS ... just too big a coincidance.

So what was Christian Kane's reaction to the 'guyliner' and leather pants?

Eliot's casual fashion knowledge was funny, picking Parker's clothes "empire waist" and then having to justify he was still manly. How many takes was that?

Also loved the interaction between Kane and Jeri Ryan when she head butted the guy.

Anna said...

Loved this episode-even if I was missing Sophie. At least she dropped in via international calling.

Parker as a model. Priceless.

Did I detect some Elliot/Parker flirtation going on at that clothes rack? Whoa.

Kevin said...

So much hotness in this episode. Beth in that dress was amazing, and Jeri is just so very hot.

Good episode, glad you're all back!

Unknown said...

The episode itself was a nicely done con, so kudos for that.

But the initial con raised a question in my mind: why not just steal the money? It was a cash operation, and the safe would not have been a challenge for Parker. It's curious that this does not usually come up because, frankly, it is very rare that the client just needs cash (and, relatively sspeaking, such a small amunt of it).

Now, I think you laid some pipe for this by pointing out it was an easy job to test Tara, and more generally there's the fall back that people report theft to the police but usually don't report it when they've been well conned, but the question extends a little bit beyond this episode, and in my gut it feels like it wouldn't jibe with the underlying idea of justice, but that's fuzzy and I'd very much like to hear your take on it.

-Rob D.

Annie said...

Loved this episode, one of my favorites, everyone was on top form and I love that they all had contact with Sophie.

How much time does Christian usually have to choreograph (he does, right?) and rehearse a fight?
And if the fight is complicated or long does that affect how much Eliot appears in the rest of the episode?

Also in an IFmagazine article Eliot was described as 'has always been mainly backup', do you agree with that description?

DHS said...

Where is Sophie, really?

That bad green-screen is obviously deliberate and the matching headwear-background is trying a bit too hard.

She might be out of town, but she's not far out of town, and I wouldn't put it past her to be just a few streets over.

Deb said...

Such a good episode! I hadn't realised how much I'd missed your show!
My question is: How on earth did you manage to get Christian Kane into eyeliner? My friend thinks you musta had to sedate him!

Unknown said...

Great episode. So excited for the second half of the season. I'm slowly getting used to Tara, but she'll never replace Sophie. I was wondering if you guys had considered doing an episode on the illegal trade of human organs. If so that would be awesome and I'd love to see another international episode!

Idlewild said...

There is a sequence when the con is being set up where we see Hardison working on graphics...then he clicks on the surveillance tab and suddenly we move right in to what the Pans are doing. Very slick, I liked that bit. Actually, the whole set up for the con moved so smoothly and quickly that I was left feeling like "Whoa, these guys are awesome..." I think it made the eventual plot twist a little more jarring, and subsequently, effective.

Interesting to see Nate willing to put Tara's life on the line, and the team's reaction. Now I'm really looking forward to seeing where things go from here.

Parker/Eliot interaction was good in this one, especially that banter about the dresses! And Hardison's double-take at seeing Eliot in guyliner was priceless.

No questions this time around, just glad to have Leverage back!

gwangung said...

A couple bits:

a) is Nate and crew going to be on the hit list for the triads? There was a reason Nate never wanted to get involved with organized crime...

b) and wasn't Hardison a bit sloppy not checking for aliases for the Pans? Not the first time they've run across money laundering schemes and financial whitewashing is supposed to be one of his specialties....

David Hunt said...

is Nate and crew going to be on the hit list for the triads?

It’s just my own personal speculation, but I think that the writers left themselves an out there. If the triads start poking around hard enough, they’ll discover that “Nate Ford” was an Interpol undercover. They would then spend a lot of resources and effort trying to figure out more about this guy. Their inability to get any more could be interpreted as a sign that the operation was very classified. They might not want to turn over that rock.

Or more simply (and ruthless), Pan and his guys are the only ones that heard Nate’s name. Pan is the one on the hook for the money and now he and his people are in police custody on suspicion of arson and attempted murder. And he kept the books on a bunch on a lot of counterfeit clothes operations. I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if there were some fatal “incidents” to preempt him from trying to cut a deal. Saying Pan will be dead by breakfast is probably an exaggeration. Saying he’ll be dead by dinner time…

DaveMB said...

I agree with DHS above -- Sophie's foreign backgrounds are about as convincing as the "live foreign remote stories" on The Daily Show, and I think we are meant to notice that.

At the end of this ep I almost expected Sophie to walk into the room where Nate was -- but of course it's not the right time in the story arc for that.

WV: "hainnes" -- brand of underwear worn by Ralph Fiennes...

I love the subtle way that Hardison was clearly rocking the scarf thing while Eliot failed. Hardison does have an interesting fashion sense. Speaking of fashion, Nate's boots were awesome! Does Tim enjoy the all the outrageous costumes he gets? I also loved the "Gloria Pandervilt" bit.

Did Tara steal an earbud so she could keep up with them later?

Parker! was great this time around. I'm surprised no one has mentioned the reindeer games bit. That was fun.

When the season 2 DVDs come out, it would be awesome to have the TNT promos on it. They're doing a really great job this time!

Is Elliot just that kind of guy, the second in command sort who takes orders?

I suspect Elliot has a more military perspective on executing a mission as a team. Chain of command applies during a mission. Once the mission is complete, that's the time to challenge someone's leadership or abilities.

Did Nate have issues with Tara because he doesn't trust her or because he hates not being in control and Tara wasn't his choice?

I'm gonna vote "Yes."

I appreciated the scenic highlights of the greater Boston metropolis. Any chance they might make it into the wilds of New Hampshire? I would so love to hear Tim Hutton say "Ayuh."

@briddie: Oh, man, I completely forgot about the reindeer games! Must be because I wasn't able to do my usual multiple viewings …

But, yes, that whole bit was a hilarious example of Parker's particular OCD. "How would they keep score?" Meanwhile, she's doing algebra in her head …

*sniff* Seriously, I missed this show SO MUCH!!

I too thought this was a fantastic opener for the second half of the season. It was hilarious, yet had lots of interesting character stuff in there too. The fact that the team had problems accepting Tara actually helped me to accept her (which I suspect was part of the intention).

Guyliner, fashion knowledge followed by OTT testosterone display, reindeer games = priceless. As were Sophie's cameos. I love that we're still seeing her, that she seems so very present and part of things due to the team's need to consult her. The ridiculous backgrounds got funnier and funnier as the episode went on; I'm not sure if she's really in the apartment next door, but she definitely doesn't want them to find her. Yet.

I love this programme and am so happy to see it back. Thanks so much for taking the time to answer questions and observations here; it adds enormously to my enjoyment of each episode.

Something I noticed (slow day at work = iTunes). When Parker and Eliot go back to the fashion show to steal Andre V's designs, Eliot shoves away a photographer's camera. Is that thief!Eliot's natural aversion to having his picture taken, or just Eliot being his usual charming self?

Which brings up another question. It's well established that Eliot is a low-tech (no-tech?) kinda guy, yet today's law enforcement is extremely high-tech. How has he managed to stay off the radar? Or is the fact that he's still on the loose rather than a guest of the government somewhere just another testament to the complete inability of intelligence/enforcement agencies to play well with each other?

OhShinyTomato said...

Also in an IFmagazine article Eliot was described as 'has always been mainly backup', do you agree with that description?

I wrote that article.

I know a lot of Eliot fans weren't happy with that assessment either, but in my head, he is. While that's clearly not ALL he is, he can grift pretty damn well too, what happens when things go south? He swoops in and beats the crap out of people to get the team out of a jam. Hence, backup, as in 'backup plan'.

But it's just my opinion.

gwangung said...

Eliot strikes me as someone WAAYYYY more competent at WAYYYY more things than he lets on (he certainly has room to do that, given his sleep habits). Always helps to have something in reserve that's not expected.

(Also strikes me that he may be more tech savvy than on the surface. No way is he a world class hacker, but he possibly can get around better than Nate or Sophie).

USRaider said...

Welcome back and, once again, a great episode!

The only problem I would have with it is that Tara (Jeri) doesn't seem to be in the typical "grifter" mode. Sophie (Gina) would never reduce herself to fighting to get out of a situation. A grifter, after all, will talk themselves out of most situations. How do we explain the difference between Tara and Sophie?

Another question: Will Nate (Tim) realize that he cannot run things effectively without Sophie beside him to help? Over the past few eps, there is a realization that Sophie is the glue that holds the team together.

Chris said...

I don't have much to add or question but given that I was a repeat commenter on this in the past, I just wanted to say thank you for the new score. I'm sure that's got to be an impossible challenge on a show like this and I enjoyed it immensely.

Oh and as for Hardison not catching the Pan alias, this is two weeks in a row that he's slipped but I also have to imagine that he's never really had to check and double check other people. He's the con artist, he can fool the NSA, so the odds of anyone fooling him are typically negligible... until they do fool him.

Murphy Jacobs said...

@US Raider

Sophia is not above using her head (Beantown Job) to fight rather than talk. :) Maybe Tara thought reasoning with cleaver wielding goons a waste of breath.

I made a comment on my twitter and was told to ask you here, so here goes nothing.

The fact that Eliot owns the leather trousers and knows how to put on the eyeliner and mascara himself makes me wonder just what pre-Leverage Eliot did when he wasn't, well, retrieving things.

Enquiring minds wish to know ;)

@moonpupy: yes! i was thinking that too. maybe it's the wesley-ness/ her being the jack of all trades that's grating on me. i love the other characters more for their quirks/deficiencies than their strengths. hmm...

one thing that did endear tara to me a bit? the part where she says something to the effect of 'no one on earth is as good as you think you are.'

Lisa said...

This is my first time posting here, so here goes!

I really liked seeing how Tara

After watching the ep, I have three questions:

1. How did Gloria end up working at a sweatshop herself, and how did she get caught?

2. We know Sophie was in Paris when the team was talking to her, Uzbekistan when she talked to Tara, but where was she when she was talking to Nate?

3. Gina mentioned in her TV Guide blog that she worked with a coach to get the langauges/dialect/accent right for all the different personas she had to portray. Did Jeri do the same?

Thanks for answering all of our questions! In this episode, I really liked seeing Tara continue to show the team just what she was made of, and her and the team size each other up, and figure out how they were going to work together. All the Fashion Week stuff was great! But most of all, I liked seeing Nate's control issues getting the better of him, and how we are seeing how it's starting to make him unravel. (If it hasn't already). Can I also say I just loved Elliot getting into the who fashion thing, with his get-up in the beginning, and him critiquing the outfits for Parker? lol.

faithchristina said...

First, I'm glad to have everyone back!!!!!!

Second, who's idea was it to take Eliot's "character" as far as you did? I love all of the little things that Christian had to do to make it work. Was it like pulling teeth to get Christian to cooperate or was he totally on board? And exactly how or where would Eliot know how to put on guyliner and stuff? (Totally hot by the way!!!!!)

Thank you.

Annie said...

@OhShinyTomato

I asked because I was slightly boggled by the reaction to your article.

I do think the team see him as backup, for example in the sweatshop he's basically there as bodyguard (even though he has his back to a glass wall).

That doesn't mean he isn't capable of more but they do rely on him to save the day when things go south, sometimes too much.
That later scene in the sweatshop with all the guns could have gone very wrong if Nate hadn't showed up.

What's with all this commotion over Kane in eyeliner?

The guy's an actor. He probably sleeps up side down, hanging from the ceiling so the hair won't be ruined.

The question: Is Parker completely asexual or just very, very uninterested?

I loved this episode, the bad guys weren't really interesting, but the humour was MORE than enough to compensate. Had the marathon on ALL day, also. ^_^

Just one question. Why does Sophie keep showing up, when the reason she left was to 'find herself?'

Oh, and how did the evil woman end up in the sweat shop? Last we heard she was running away....

Loved the episode, really missed the show while it was away.

I really like Tara as a character and Jeri Ryan is doing a fabulous job. Of course, everyone wants Gina back, but you really lucked out getting such a fabulous actress to take her place for this season. I'm going to miss her when she goes.

I'm enjoying watching Nate slowly cracking up. I am really hoping we get a big explosion as a pay off. I seem to remember you making a throwaway comment, possibly on Twitter, about watching Tim H cut loose as Nate and really freaking out. Is that coming up very soon or was that in the season finale?

Good to have the crew back on our screens again! Thanks for a great show :)

Anonymous said...

No questions to ask. I just wanted to congratulate you on the stellar episode AND the great ratings. Leverage has now become my favorite TV show.

Bravo to all of the cast and crew.

Great show, and great to have you back!

I'm worried about Nate! Man's coming unglued. Tara's comment that "...nobody's as good as you think you are" sounded ominously portentious to me! This should be good. And by good, I mean painful, by which I mean, pass the popcorn.

Geez, is there anything Tara can't do? Will we next see her hacking into Skynet with a netbook while hanging upside down from a building?

Must comment on this: Eliot in guyliner and scarf? Funny. Eliot pissed at being told he can't work it? Hysterical! How much did Christian laugh when he read that script?

How did Nathan happen to have a fake Interpol badge in his pocket?

Are those greenscreen backgrounds behind Sophie and her multinational hat collection really supposed to be real?

Is that enough questions? Okay.

@L (and others)

I don't get the Wesley-ness about Tara because we're not being shown that she's better at everyone else on the team, just that's she's quite good, which is different. She's good in a fight, sure, but if she'd been facing those thugs on her own, she'd have been captured and/or maimed post haste. She can hack a system but I'd bet that if Hardison was really looking, he'd have spotted her. I also imagine she can do a fair job stealing as well, but the Hope Diamond is well and truly beyond her grasp.

She's a jack (er, jill) of all trades because she has to be and if Sophie recommended her, she'd have to be pretty damned good. But not superhuman, which she's not being shown to be. And I'd bet that she'll be out of her depth soon enough as Nate starts to slip.

Yeah, I don't get it either. I don't think people get that EVERYONE on the team are quite good outside their specialty (we've SEEN Parker do well at hand to hand). We've been TOLD this by Rogers (they're all good at Thief 101). They all have weaknesses (e.g., neither Hardison nor Parker can do the long con); I'm guessing Tara's weaknesses are not as weak as the others' weaknesses, just as her strengths are not as strong (as far as we've seen; she could be very weak in one or two areas).

BLaze said...

Man, I hate to be the pooper at the party, but I thought "Runway Job" was quite weak. Everyone seemed listless and "remind me, what's my character again?"

The con itself was grade school. I know our heroes are the best of the best, but it seems increasingly we're not being SHOWN how they're the best. For me, this show works when there is a mix of the tasty characters and the effervescent bubbles of the con's details. Well, I'm finding the bubbles are disappearing, leaving a flat drink.

I can't really point to any particular misstep. I just found it a flabby start out of the gate for 2.5

Lauren said...

Blaze, I do agree that it felt a bit flat in comparison to the typical snappiness--a little bland, both regarding the characters and the con. But it's the only episode that's ever felt a bit lacking to me. Next week's premise, however, seems to promise interest and challenges, which will hopefully bring out the best in everybody again.

gwangung said...

Everyone seemed listless and "remind me, what's my character again?"

In a way, that's deliberate, you know. New person on the team, challenging everyone, especially Nate (she's going down like coarse sand in a well oiled machine), everyone's going to be hesitant and questioning roles and rules/

Jo said...

So, been idly wondering and maybe you've answered this before but ...

Suppose it could be "Insure Your Stuff" but that just isn't quite as much fun...

Man, I enjoyed this episode. It's so good to see the guys again, and we're right back in full swing. While I am looking forward to getting Sophie back, I am liking the Tara/team dynamic at the moment. The trio's passive aggressive "yeah, Nate's always like that, you'll just have to get used to it" hostility bit was hilarious (like so many other things in here). :) I'm looking forward to watching them get more in sync as they get used to each other. It'll probably take some compromising on all sides though (which'll be like pulling teeth probably, given the personalities present).

I have to say, I especially loved Eliot and Parker (although that's not anything new). I love that they both seem to have these random skills that you wouldn't expect of them, like Eliot with cooking and his wide array of "I dated a ______" acquired knowledge (haha, "empire waistline" indeed) and Parker with her drawing and math abilities. Will more of these show up, and do/will they have a particular significance beyond "yeah, these guys are just that awesome"?

Welcome back!

Great episode- I have already watched it three times.

Just a couple of questions/comments

1) How much direction was given to Kane about the flirting? I somehow picture it as just "Go do what you do." Seriously, when he was playing with the brunette's hair when Nate wanted him to go to the sweat shop...

2) I cant believe that no one has mentioned the irony with Parker as the photographer! Every time I see a new Beth Riesgraf photo I am blown away!

3) I knew the "5-0" would mean something when it was said. Is it just a Hawaii 50 reference?

4) It appears that we are in the same mode as the Ice Man Job - that no one knows that the rest are video-chatting with Sophie. Love that she knows all! Will she use that powerful position in the future?

5)Love the return of Eliot in glasses!

And too many great quotes/one liners! LOVE IT

Thanks - you didnt disappoint.

I am all the more stoked for ConCon now!

CindyD said...

1) Which writer came up with the buckles? Hilarious touch.

2) Did Ben Stiller consult or were Berg and/or Beth channeling Zoolander for that catwalk performance? (I know Albert Kim wrote the ep but didn't Berg come up with Parker on the catwalk?) Loved it!

3) Can the team steal the Tonight Show? I'd love to see Conan hiring the team in Season 3. Conan and Parker boggles the imagination and then you have The Hair v. The Hair...

So glad y'all are back, both on TV and here for season 2.5, and in the writer's room and twitter, for
season 3! Love those Twitter teases during production!

CindyD said...

Oh, forgot an important one: Is Berg coming back for season 3?

SueN. said...

Oh, one more thing (a hazard of multiple viewings). Loved the sound effects when Eliot whipped out the business card and Parker did her catwalk head-whip. Nice call-back to The Wedding Job and Eliot's lesson in knives. *g*

So, were Parker's green Docs in her first scene a deliberate costuming choice or has Beth just been taking advantage of filming in the same city as the Dr Martens store for the US? =)

2)and where was gloria driving to? how did she end up bein a worker?

NateSophieFan said...

1) What did Nate do at the Russian border?

2) Which book was Nate reading right before he called Sophie in The Ice Man Job?

Okay, Nate said that he'll try to communicate better for Sophie, now how about communicating better with Sophie?

Anonymous said...

since noone has mentioned it yet: great Stephen Seagal reference!

also: drooling slightly (only so little my wife can't see it) over Parker in the dress. NICE dress.

and: I've quite often not liked how Nate plays his characters, IMO quite overdone, but this one (and the lawyer in the last one) were great BECAUSE they were so overdone. So I'm not exactly sure what I want. But cool boots!

SethFourTen said...

Settle a bet: Parker fell off the runway to either A) Provide Elliot a distraction to retrieve the USB stick or B) The world's greatest cat burglar is no good in heels and a long dress. Thanks, and keep up the good work.

Nato said...

Parker's comments about the impracticality of fashion vis-a-vis international thieving were maybe my favorite part of the episode. (And I'll second or third or fourth all the folks who suggest that her "Hot!" comment was just Parker trying to mimic what these strange creatures around her say and do in hopes of fitting in.)

Also, kudos to Mr. Kane and your fight coordinator for consistently staging the coolest, fastest, most believably painful-looking fights on TV. It's amazing, big-screen-worthy work.

Unknown said...

The 5-0 thing was nice, though I would have preferred it played a bit more subtly.

People really think Tara is better than the rest of the team? Really? After two episodes? I thought we were still in the 'Tara establishes she can hang with our gang' phase? She knocks down the one Triad goon, but Eliot still has to take them all out. And his interpose was perfectly timed.

It was a good episode. I'm also firmly in the camp of 'Sophie is green-screening from next door'. The obvious green-screen I can write off as budget limits - You Can See the Eiffel Tower From Everywhere in Paris - but the headwear struck me as Trying Too Hard.

Huh. I totally forgot my question.

Anonymous said...

Some questions..and personal observations :)
1. Could Tara (ever) be "related" to Sophie? Like a step-sister? How was it possible for Sophie to get hold of a substitute "by ten o'clock" the next day? Nate asked for this in The Lost Heir Job.
2. Love, love, LOVE Christian Kane! I assume to apply guyliner is like putting on "war paint?" Lol Really cool to know Eliot's such a pro, he'll totally blend in..he's camera-shy too. Eliot in The Miracle Job end scene was a good example of this.
3. IMO Tara seems to be trying too hard to irritate Nate! She's in the team for a reason, but she's acting solo..which brings me..
4. To think Tara's running a "personal con (?)" on behalf of Sophie, may be? Be so AWFUL, that Nate would want Sophie back, like right now! Just a thought:)
5. Coming back to Eliot (had to!)- He sleeps for 90 min, doesn't own a TV AND grows his own vege..has been intimate with flight attendant to neurologists..and isn't he lovely finding some "common ground" in helping Parker out with an outfit? LOL Eliot knows that there's "something wrong with Parker" In the Pilot Parker says she doesn't get what's "with women and shoes" to Sophie, right? Eliot responded to that remark. But in the Ice Man ep Parker was on the phone with Sophie and says "..Jimmy Choo's..you have a body in Nate's closet?!" So IMO Eliot extending this gesture to Parker here is to be appreciated in its correct context.
Finally, I'd like to think that IF Sophie's coming back to the team w/out an identity crisis..she's STILL coming back to an unchanged Nate, right? So, is Sophie in the vicinity, disguised and keeping tabs on the proceedings?

briddie said...

"Cleavers - haven't don that in a while." Is that just a callback to the Butcher of Kiev, or is it a hint that Eliot has dealt with the triad before?

Anonymous said...

I had to look at the episode a second time to notice Eliot blocking the camera when they went back to retrieve the Andre V fashions. And it has happened before. That is interesting.

Question: Is he deliberately hiding from someone in particular and would expect any media photos of him would clue that someone to a) his location? or b) that he is still alive?

If so, are we gonna see this person? It doesn't have to be an enemy. It could be family. Or, it could be more than one person. We don't know much about him, except that he kicks major ass and has MANY talents.

And I have to comment on Eliot's use of "soy candles" when trying to get into the show. I never thought I would hear something like that coming from him. Hilarious. Scripted or Kane ad lib?

But, then I never thought I'd hear "empire waist", from Eliot either. Dude is full of surprises.

So, glad you guys are back.

Caillie said...

@Anonymous, who'd have thought he'd pronounce it "empeer" instead of "emp-ie-re", too? I was about to call foul but fortunately looked it up first. The soy candle thing was great, very quick switch into con mode for both of them. I really love Parker in this one! She hasn't lost her quirkiness after all.

Anonymous said...

So, if Nate knew what Tara meant when that whole deal went down in the sweat shop, why didn't he tell the others about it when they were questioning his decision and talking about how he put her in danger?

Anonymous said...

Just to clarify, I don't think Tara is Mary-Sue Better-Than-You. It just seems to me that she's trying real hard, maybe not so much to fit in, but to get the team to accept her, by showing them she's good enough to play in their sandbox. She's probably never done any such thing before. She really should have stayed out of Eliot's way in the cleaver situation. Her "Admit it, you like me a little now" comment makes me think she did that to impress him.

Also, those laundry baskets are canvas on a light metal frame. No way does one have enough mass to knock a guy over, no matter how hard she shoved it. Just sayin'. I know - Fun train!

Unknown said...

Was Nathan's costume inspired by/stolen from Paul McGann's Doctor No. 8?

SueN. said...

I don't get the hostility toward Tara, either.

Yes, she's a skilled grifter. Um, isn't that why Sophie sent her? Because that's what the team needed? Why wouldn't Mama send someone competent to look after her family?

And what's wrong with her having sense enough to hit some guy in the head with an iron? I would think that as a grifter, she would almost certainly have some basic self-defense/dirty fighting ability. It's tough in Crime World. If you're gonna make a living stealing or conning people out of their stuff, it probably behooves you to know how to throw a punch. Or a heavy object. And, in the end, Eliot still saved her. Until the guys with the guns showed up, at which point Nate saved them.

And, yes, Tara came up with the "5-0" thing, but … she's a grifter. She's *supposed* to know cons. It's, like, her job.

I'm just wondering … would folks be happier if she were incompetent or helpless? I honestly don't get it.

Anonymous said...

I meant to add to my previous comment how much I enjoyed Tara's comments on Nate's habits/affectations. It made me realise how much I'd come to accept them as quite normal behaviour when in reality they're anything but. Nice observations, guys. :) Always good to get another pov on the characters.

Sammie said...

So the guyliner and scarf are what Eliot considers high fashion?

And did he apply the eye makeup himself, like go out and buy it first? Or would he just borrow some from one of the many models he dated? :)

Monica said...

Okay, I have questions.

Any word on the Leverage Books. I asked back during 2.0 and it was looking good.. just wondered if I needed to plan a stake out at Barnes and Noble.

Eliot's background... ^..^

Is he the youngest and only boy in a large family. I can see him having 6 older sisters watching his every move. He'd naturaly be subjected to endless fashion conversations, something would have stuck.

Seriously, I know that this isn't a soap, but do you think that maybe something of his past will be uncovered in future eps?

Lovin' the show, It's great having a series that I can watch and truly enjoy the plots and Characters, even the "bad" guys..... gotta love Sterling!

May your 3 ring binder always be full, your paper come equipped with reinforcements, and your pens never run out of ink.

;)The code Five-0, I guess is (quite) common knowledge, a slang term for police..assuming Tara was a "pro criminal" why would she settle for such a code? Did Tara reveal "something" about herself by doing that?
I really like the way TH's Nate is written. Nate can be sooo urm, unpredictable! Love it.
The Ice Man Job also had Nate sort of winging it. Nate staged it so the detective would catch Kerrity red-handed.. Eliot did ask earlier how was it gonna be proven that Kerrity too was involved in the diamond grab, if only the Russians were in the vault. Nate said he was "working on it!" Oh and Eliot talking Parker and Hardison through the escape in that ep was very well done!

The Mad Scientist said...

How the hell did you get Christian Kane to wear guyliner?

Was watching The Nile High ep again. It was another good one after the Bank Job. So The Team had been in an airplane AND a bank..could I have one in a train? I've heard about the movie called The Great Train Robbery. I can imagine Eliot having a fight scene in one of its carriages or above a fast moving train..
Thanks for your patience;D

Anonymous said...

Sorry,it should be The MILE High Job!

Unknown said...

@Sammie

No - Eliot thought the scarf and the guyliner 'fashion-y'

Which made it seem at that time that he had no idea about fashion - but he proved he certainly knew a lot about womens fashions in the exchange with Parker.

gwangung said...

Which made it seem at that time that he had no idea about fashion

With respect to HARDISON. But he had no problem revealing his knowledge to Parker. Hmmm...

Anonymous said...

Eliot revealed that he learned his fashion knowledge from models he's dated which would explain why he knew a lot about women's fashions and very little about what's "fashion-y" for men.

What a great episode to return into the action with!

I watched it with my screener (along with The Bottle Job, which I honestly cannot wait for the rest of the world to see, since it's my new favorite episode) and could only think of one thing to ask.

Pilgrim Chic. As soon as I saw the buckles all I could think of was the episode of Just Shoot Me with Dana Carvey. Any hint of inspiration coming from that sitcom episode?

Other than that, I'll save my bigger questions for the next episode!

Thanks again for your insight behind the scenes.

Kane and the guyliner - in the scene he was in after he let his hair down, I immediately thought of the 80's Hair Metal Bands (him rocking the leather pants probably helped just a bit too). Was he "all in" for the 'extreme' eye make-up?

I immediately caught on that Tara was referring to the police when she pointedly stated "Five-Oh" .. but of course couldn't have guessed how that was going to play out. So you kept me wondering.

Great to have the show back. Wish we got even more eps this season. But really thankful that there's going to be a 3rd season (and hopefully quite a few more after that)!

Anonymous said...

Eliot's a retrieval specialist? I'd just assume he HAS to take note/study his "enemy's environment" and NOT do/say things that raises a red-flag in his direction? :) Eliot I assume again, does not do guesswork and simply BLUFF his way into said "enemy territory"-if he's to survive the "mission" and keep a reputation for being extremely good at what he does!
Eliot doesn't think much on having to explain himself to others too I guess! LOL Remember when Nate exclaimed at Eliot in The Second David ep: "..you, you're TYING your hair?!" something like that. Eliot was highly agitated and retorted fiercely,"that's because I'm PLAYING the part of Adam Sinclair!!" Same thing here with the urm, "fashion props?"

Anonymous said...

In the Ice Man ep there was Parker hiding and asking Sophie's advice on how to manage the grifter job. It was here Parker revealed her "ignorance" on "fashion sense" best I think. Funny reference to not knowing who's JC and all..BUT surprise, surprise there was the time when as her alter-ego Alice Smith(The Juror)Parker questioned if what she was wearing to court was what "Alice" would be wearing:) Hmmm how about Parker having confidence issues in the bridesmaid (garish) pink gown lol!!
Ok so coming back to The Ice Man ep, just as Eliot was cautioning Hardison for being wayyy too much as the grifter, Parker mentions Sophie telling her to say nothing and trust the diamond to do all the "talking" Nate walks into their conversation, and Parker immediately denies everything she was saying. Awkward moment there for all three! SO, I'm guessing Eliot was helping Parker up in that sense here.
I love it that Christian Kane's role is able to show up many different characteristics for Eliot.

@zenkitty

Hardison handed Nate the Interpol ID when he called him back to the van after handing him the flash drive with the designs.

Ok - was taking a football break and watched yet again today.

I dont think anyone has asked about when Nate & Parker went to the Pan's house.

They were walking up the driving way on one side as Gloria was driving down the other side.

Was it a con thing to not pull all the way up to the front of the house? or just convenient for the script. I would think if you were gonna pull in the drive at ALL that you would pull all the way up.

Michelle Tackabery said...

1) was there a specific designer or design trend you were making fun of with the buckles? The designs looked familiar to me. . .
2) Jeri Ryan's accent in the con was hysterically funny. Who's idea?
3) Not knowing anything about the fashion world, I was kind of shocked that security would be so terribly lax at such an event, but it seemed easy for the team to take advantage of it. Convenient fiction for this story?
4) I too am wondering why Tara would casually drop Nate's real name to the Triad guy--I realize you were setting us (the audience) up to believe Tara was going to screw Nate because she was pissed at him, and is just a callous bitch and happens to roll like that, but the consequences seem to be severe. Seems a pretty short jump for the Triads to find out who Nate really is and get the drop on him someday.

Good episode. Beth did a great job with Parker. She seemed to be channeling "Zoolander" on the runway. And I think I miss Sophie/Gina as much as she does. Good to see as much of her as we did!! You stated that we get 15 episodes again next season. That is quite a few less that other networks. Is that a choice of TNT or you, Dean, cast...?

Love the new episode. I actually have one general Leverage question and one observation, both sparked from obsessively reading the back-posts on this blog:

1. I re-watched The Bank Shot Job the other day and spotted our pet FBI agents at the end - but of course, since it was aired before the Wedding Job, we hadn't met them yet! As the insane geek that I am, I'd like to sometime watch through the episodes in the order they were originally intended to be aired. Have you (I couldn't see it but you might've) or could you post a list of them in that order?

2. re: the future of television, Netflix etc. Some facts and figures about BBC iPlayer came out today, including this:
•One in eight requests for TV programmes now coming from a games console

Please.. Please tell me Tara isn't going to be a full time team member. I can't stand her, damn woman, leave the fighting to Eliot and the good grifting to Sophie, pack your bags and get out. Totally not liking the new member.

Okay, so, clearly Parker likes blondes (Alice, inappropriate sniffing of Maggie, inappropriate crowding of Monica Hunter, vocal appreciation of Tara.)

Is this going to be an issue in Parker and Hardison's budding romance, or can they go out and pick up women together? (I am in favor of option #2.) Speaking of, is their romance going to do any more budding? I mean, I get it, you can't force the lock, but you do still have to keep trying to unlock it or you stay outside the door.
