All I'll Say About the Blogwars

Last fall:

Republicans: Jesus, you're just voting for Hopey McChangey because he's a great speaker and he's promising unicorns and rainbows of change.

Democrats: How condescending. No, I'm voting for Obama based on his stated policy goals and his deliberative nature. We are, after all, the reality-based community.

Now:

Democrats: WHERE THE &#%&@ IS MY GODDAM UNICORN?!!

FWIW, until we rise up with pitchforks and get rid of the Senate (and, seriously, I've had my pitchfork sharpened for years), I think we got HCR about as far as it could go this round. Although I disagree with the idea we live in a center-right nation, we operate within a center-right system.

Yeah, this argument (in its long form) was complicit in my breaking up with a dude this weekend.

Well, that and he didn't hold doors for me, made fun of my religious beliefs, and I paid for most-all of our dates.

But it was his impatient "I WANT IT NOOOOW!" political arguments with no regard to history or the glacial pace of societal, bureaucratic, and systemic change that drove me up the freakin' wall.

That about says it all.

What upsets me most about all this is that we didn't get death panels.

There is certainly some measure of unrealistic expectation at work -- people seem to forget how far we've come, in that we actually have an administration that doesn't manage to pick the very worst course of action at every juncture.

At the same time, I think a lot of the problem is how HCR has been sold: it hasn't been stressed nearly enough that a big part of this will be increased regulation on the insurance industry. Until you understand that, it's sort of forgivable to assume that insurance companies are going to play by the same rules as always. "Regulation" may carry a stigma with some crowds, but not so much in the last year, and certainly not with the sort of crowds that are interested in improved health care.

Eyes on the prize, people: if we get coverage to more Americans for whom it is not currently available, and if insurance covers pre-existing conditions, we've won a hell of a lot.

(My word verification: "trifiddi". As in, "I need about trifiddi".)

While I agree with respect to congress and health care, you've got to give the unicorn crowd some credence. Many things that Obama has done that upset some progressives were purely within the executive branch. Afghanistan, continuing with Bush secrecy and executive privileges, Wall Street ties, etc., etc.

If Obama were consistently progressive on the issues he has full control over he'd be given a lot more trust when dealing the congress.

Rebecca said...

Seriously? You seriously have no problem with the way Obama pissed away his political clout? He waffled on the public option, cut a deal behind our back with Big Pharma and has literally told progressives in Congress to STFU instead of fight for what we could get.

Now we have 30 million people forced to buy insurance, with subsidies for about 3 million and no public option for those who can't afford private but don't qualify for subsidies. That is NOT *providing* health care for 30 million people, that's an insurance industry's wet dream.

When the Senate declared they had 60 votes for this bill on Friday, insurance industry stocks went higher than they had been for 52 years. Because Wall Street analysts realize that the insurance companies are going to make out like bandits with this thing. That does not augur well for us, the consumer, to put it mildly.

There's no freaking way we couldn't have done better than this. For a fairly clear explanation of how Obama has screwed things up for us, with possibly disastrous electoral consequences, take a look at this, written by a fairly objective Democrat.

When I donated, and volunteered, I knew we had a tough fight ahead of us. But I thought that, with over 60% approval rating and a Dem congress, a smart President could make a real difference. I mean, look how much Bush was able to ram through with a dismal approval rating and a Dem Congress. A Dem president should have been able to do WAY better.

That's why the bloggers are up in arms. Obama has broken promise after promise and has missed one opportunity after another until the public has finally realized that his opponents during the campaign were right. The man is all talk, no action. He's just full of hot air. A year in and he's done nothing of real significance, nothing that any random Democrat couldn't have done with no problem. That's why his approval rating is nose diving. It's his own fault for bending over every time a conservative looked at him cross eyed.

Maybe you've been a little too wrapped up in the show to get a clear picture of what's been happening? In which case, well worth it. But please don't try to make out like those of us who believed in our candidate were wide eyed idealists.

We were ready to fight - hard - for our changes for the next 8 years. We just didn't realize that, as it turns out, our candidate has neither the stomach nor the balls for a fight.

Julian Yap said...

I generally agree with your points, especially about how we operate in a center-right, and arguably, just a plain conservative system. The Senate--and the filibuster in particular--are basically institutions designed to make it hard to change things.

That said, I am curious what would have happened on health care if we had had an executive driven effort with the full-throated support of the President. I'm not sure what Obama thinks about the public option as a matter of policy, but assuming he thinks it is a good thing, he completely failed to sell it. While there are those who think it would not have made a big difference, I think its extremely important not to underestimate the incredible powers of the President's bully pulpit (See, e.g. the shift in American opinions of torture under the Bush Administration; the shift in the views on civil unions in Utah after Huntsman came out in favor of them)

I must also admit to being extremely disappointed in the Obama administration's approach to national security issues, particularly as they regard civil liberties. I do think this is one place where he has failed to deliver on what he actually promised (and, given Greg Craig's resignation--which was at least in part spurred by his differences with the administration over these issues--I don't think this is an unreasonable position)

"-- Democrats: How condescending. No, I'm voting for Obama based on his stated policy goals and his deliberative nature. We are, after all, the reality-based community.--"

Because it's not like the public option or Medicare expansion were stated policy goals deliberately set out from the start of his Presidential Campaign.

Sweet Baby Jesus, it's not like we're asking for actual socialism here. We're just asking for an alternative to insurance company oligopoly. And for daring to suggest that maybe forcing everyone into insurance plans run by the pack of kitten-rapist Insurance CEOs isn't the best path to universal coverage, suddenly we're demanding free ponies for life.

Talk about lowered expectations. I can't wait to see the capitulation on Climate Change. "Well, we went in talking about carbon caps and trading, but Lieberman said we could only have higher CAFE standards and a kick in the balls. So take the kick in the balls and STFU. That's the best you're going to get."

@Rebecca

In all fairness, Bush had a Republican Congress and Senate from '02 to '06. He also had an approval rating in the stratosphere right after 9/11, which was - not coincidentally - when the bulk of his legislation (tax cuts, PATRIOT Act, Iraq War) passed.

Furthermore, there were a host of bills that Bush didn't pass. He didn't privatize social security. He didn't get his PATRIOT Act 2. He didn't get to invade Iran. He never got to make those Medicare budget cuts. In fact, he had a very difficult time cutting much of anything.

Obama has, at the least, done an excellent job of shepherding legislation from start to finish. Even if the health care bill isn't fantastic, it's going to get passed. That's WAY more than could be said of HillaryCare in '93.

Whatever bad things can be said about the bill, it's still the best thing to come out of Congress in twenty years.

This image pretty much sums up my thoughts on where we are right now:

http://graphicshost.net/images/tsynf2jdem8unrw.gif

What is being worked on in Congress -- with its premium caps, expanded Medicaid coverage, pre-existing condition coverage, and subsidies to help pay premiums -- is a hell of a lot better than doing nothing, and is a minor miracle considering how easily this could have been derailed altogether. We've got exactly enough votes in the Senate to prevent a filibuster; we probably won't in 2010, so time is against us. An imperfect plan that nonetheless makes health care affordable to more Americans is a good deal, and one that won't come along again any time soon.

Nice comic, except Obama doesn't make me feel like he's fighting the undead remnants of a dangerous economic system. It's more like he's telling the pinheads in the castle that the undead need to be fought, only to then go and eat some arugula with them as they chomp on some brains.

Alan Scott said...

Yeah, John, but at some point a donkey with a cardboard cone stapled to his head is worse than no pony whatsoever.

The Idea that Obama did all he could on this issue ignores the fact that he spent most of his political capital trying to sell a republican-devised bank bailout to republicans, and since then he's been ducking easy wins like DADT and Gitmo to save up for a healthcare debate that he can't manage.

Ugluks Flea said...

The problem with HCR, as it is with almost every priority of progressives in the US, is that the conservative establishment is essentially holding a gun to the head of innocents and won't release their hostage unless we give in to their demands.

They have no desire to actually help anybody (except themselves), and really have no real malice against the hostage necessarily, it's just they are using them as pawns to get what they want. Will they actually shoot them in the head if they get called on it? Don't know - not giving in is horrible enough that nobody had tried yet.

I just wish I hadn't seen it coming. None of them were perfect, but anyone who took a serious look at the big three Dems should have seen that Obama was, on whole, the least progressive of them.

It's disappointing. We couldn't have gotten everything we wanted, but we could have gotten a damn bit more than we had if people had played hardball.

And now all this frustration is going to depress Dem turnout and volunteering in 2010. So it's only going to get worse.

Ryanznock: if Obama is just collaborating with big business here, why have the insurance companies been fighting this so furiously? Why didn't the Republicans try to institute this back when they were in power -- if this is just a big win for big business, then giving them a huge money grab would be textbook Republican, wouldn't it?

I'll grant you that Obama isn't a progressive; he's center-left and he's given to incremental change. But he's not the problem here; you know who is? Hint: there are 40 of them in the Senate, and so long as it's necessary to contend with them, it's also necessary to bargain with Blue Dogs and Liebermann. Get the Republicans out of office and who knows, we might even have a shot at an actual progressive agenda.

In the meantime, we'll just have to make do with health care reform that doesn't eliminate private insurance but does make it more affordable, and also regulates it better such that pre-existing conditions will be covered. That may not be ideal, but it sure beats what we've got today.

I sort of wanted to agree with, or even sympathize with, the angry bill-killers, but dem ol' Reality Based Blues keep filling my head with questions like:

"Where, exactly were you going to get 60 votes to end cloture without the ConservaDems and Lieberman?"
and
"Where were you going to get 51 votes for reconciliation without any GOP Senator *and* without Lieberman, Nelson, Baucus, Bayh, Landrieu, Lincoln, Webb, Feinstein, and Conrad? ... and those are just the ones who've already said they oppose the public option; there might be more 'nays' at the end-around procedure itself"
and
"What good is a public option that no one can qualify for?"
and
"Kill HCR now and wait for ... what, exactly? 2012? 2020? 2028? When will the Senate be any better than it is today?"

The bill-killers have yet to give a good answer to any of these questions. Worse, the kill-billers don't seem to care at all that the 30 million who will have medical coverage under the current bill would, in their scenario, have absolutely nothing.

(And then I remember these self-styled true progressives are the same ones who have, consistently, over the last 30 years, made a real point of being holier-than-thou on everything, from how anyone who wears leather is evil to how a true liberal could never vote for Gore. And then I realize they're as much part of the problem as the trogs on the Right. And then I stop wanting to agree with, or even sympathize with, them.)

Taellosse said...

I've kind of got to agree with Mark @#3. I'm less upset about the HCR disappointment than I am about it in aggregate with everything else that's happened in the past year. I voted for a guy that said he was going to turn the country around and take it in a whole new direction, and what I got was the lesser of two evils. He's less bad than I'm sure McCain would have been, and he's certainly less bad than Bush has been, but I'm a long way from pleased or impressed with his performance thus far.

He's done almost all of the things I hoped he wouldn't but feared he probably would, and hardly any of the things I really wanted him to.

He made a big deal about closing Guantanamo within a year. We're 6 weeks away from that deadline, and it looks like he's just going to relocate them to a prison in Illinois instead of actually closing the program down. Half a dozen of the people held there might actually get real trials, and the rest are either going to stay in prison without charge for the rest of their lives, or get show trials at best.

The new administration has worked hard to retain all of the unconstitutional powers their predecessors grabbed as part of the PATRIOT act and through outright illegal action, and continued to do all in their power to prevent proper oversight of those powers.

They continued the Bush program of giving hundreds of billions of dollars to banks to prevent their collapse with little or no strings or oversight. There was no effort to push for reform of the system while the issue was hot, and now that its been a year there's very little sense of urgency left on the issue. The banks used the free money to make back most of their losses and are paying it back, so while we won't lose much in terms of the national budget, nothing substantive will have been done to change the system so it doesn't happen again in 5 years with another bubble in a fresh market.

And now, we're getting a massive expansion of the health insurance market with extremely weak, if any, cost controls. The lower middle class are now going to be caught between a rock and a hard place because they'll be fined if they fail to get insurance, and if they do get it, it'll be too expensive and too crappy. And there are still going to be plenty of loopholes to allow the insurance companies to hideously overcharge people when they can least afford it.

My developing cynicism with respect to the Obama administration is not that he has failed to deliver me unicorns. It's that he's held fast in the wrong places and been obsessed with compromising with bad-faith opponents where he should have been drawing lines in the sand. I'm disappointed because he's showing himself to be what I was afraid he probably was even while I gave to his campaign and voted for him: just another politician.

Bob said...

Oh, for crying out loud.

Back in the heady days of the 2008 election, one of my friends, who knew I was a big Obama supporter, asked me if I really believed that he could bring about the change he was promising. My two-part answer: (a) of course not, and (b) I'm voting for him anyway.

Obama can't possibly deliver the change he promised, any more than any other presidential aspirant can, because the simple fact of the matter is, the president doesn't run things in this country. He has a lot of say, yes, but he has to contend with the feckless nitwits in Congress--not to mention various Congressional rules passed down by their predecessors, also feckless nitwits--and what is arguably the most conservative Supreme Court in the last 50 years. The president is a participant in the process, not the Ayatollah; if we didn't have such an abysmal education system, that fact might be well understood.

This country isn't some jet plane that a dashing president pretends to land on an aircraft carrier. It's the damned aircraft carrier itself, with a turning radius measured in fractions of an ocean and a turning time measured in years. As I told my friend, the best you can hope for is a president who steers in the generally correct direction, as opposed to running us into the rocks like some nitwit I could mention. If we got that, I said, I'll be happy.

We did get that. While I'm not doing handsprings at the moment, I sure prefer the current president to the alternative. It looks like we might get some kind of health reform, and the rest of the world is starting to think that, hey, maybe we aren't a nation of homicidal bible-thumpers.

But, you know, we could turn that around--maybe with a third-party presidential candidate in 2012 who claims that there's not a dime's worth of difference between the two major parties, and that his progressive path is the One True Way. What could go wrong?

"Hope" and "change" were political slogans. John Edwards used the same thing in 04. For whatever reasons, people bought that tripe off of Obama this time around.

If the government was really serious about healthcare reform and their precious government option they would demonstrate they could run a healthcare program first. Medicade is broken mess.

It is not the government's job to provide for your healthcare. That it the individual's responsibility. They already have broken programs there to attempt to help people. No one is being denied health care. You go to an emergency room and they will help you. It is the law.

You want to see Govenrment run healthcare? Go to a VA Hospital. Watch how men and women who served our country have to sit for 8 hours just to see a nurse.

Demonizing Conservatives is foolish and makes your arguments look weak.

The people voted for a pop star and not a leader. If you voted for Obama, you made this bed. Lie in it.

Anonymous said...

"Demonizing Conservatives is foolish and makes your arguments look weak."

There's nothing foolish about identifying conservatives as the problem when they say things such as:

"No one is being denied health care. You go to an emergency room and they will help you. It is the law."

First of all, nice Rush Limbaugh talking point, quoted nearly verbatim. There are at least two big problems with this strategy that Rush forgot to mention:

1) It does nothing to control costs, in fact it causes them to skyrocket, so it's an exceedingly irresponsible strategy, fiscally speaking. There is also no personal responsibility in doing that, and didn't you just say something about the importance of personal responsibility? ("It is not the government's job to provide for your healthcare. That it the individual's responsibility." Yeah, I guess you did.)

2) Any emergency room may take you for something like a bullet wound, but when it comes to something that requires a regimen of treatments -- say, cancer -- that's beyond the services an emergency room can provide. So if you've got a kid with a chronic condition or an illness that can't just be stitched up, the emergency room strategy doesn't help.

This fine strategy of yours (really Rush's) doesn't withstand even casual scrutiny, and you should be embarrassed to be championing it.

Working on my own blog post about this but in the meantime, I have one question.
Short of pulling a Guy Fawkes (WHICH I AM ABSOLUTELY NOT RECOMMENDING RANDOM NSA MAN WHO MAY BE READING THESE COMMENTS!!) how exactly can we get rid of the Senate? I've heard many ideas for limiting and/or killing the filibuster. But I've heard nothing about how to dump the institution?
Failing that, is there any way we can strand Lieberman on a desert island with nothing but a loincloth and a pointed stick?

GinaFan said...

He even had my hopes up.

Why is the government of the country so capitalist? I suppose we can count on people to be short sighted and self centered, yet this is the antithesis of government.

I don't know if getting rid of the Senate is the cure. I do know, from observation, that it is more government of the kind that isn't right.

I do think that analysis of what is wrong with the system is overdue. Not placing blame on the participants, because their nature is a given, but asking how can we place the government in a situation where they want and need to do the right thing, a lot more than they do now.

Aside from that, sometimes we see presidents actually are able to get the right things done. Johnson had some ability to twist arms. I wonder what that was.

Taellosse said...

@GinaFan: I'm not a serious history buff, but my understanding of Johnson's ability to get stuff done is that he was willing--and even eager--to play hardball. He knew about a lot of skeletons in a lot of closets, having worked in the Senate himself for many years, and he wasn't afraid to use that knowledge, and the more above-board arm-twisting that is within the President's power, to achieve his goals.

Now, I'm not saying I want another Johnson--from what I know of him, he wasn't exactly a good guy, and some of his policies were questionable at best--but a bit of that willingness to play hardball would be welcome. Obama seems to be obsessed with compromising with his opponents. Compromise is great when you've got 2 sides who have substantive goals in mind that differ. But when your opponents' only goal is to thwart what you're trying to do, there's no compromise that makes any sense.

Bob is absolutely right: the President is not the supreme leader, and he cannot make his wishes into law on a whim. But his ability to influence and steer federal policy and Congress' lawmaking efforts is nevertheless considerable, and Obama is simply not firing on all cylinders. As far as I can see, he is refusing to twist arms that really could use some twisting, and he's failing to effectively punch back when Republicans play dirty most of the time.

He can't command the Congress to pass the laws he wants, but he can make life unpleasant for his political opponents if they refuse to play by the same rules as he does. That is his failure in the health care debate. His failures elsewhere are more complex in some cases, and in others even more straightforward.

Doctor Jay said...

I have a tiny bit of sympathy for the Obama supporters. He campaigned on no mandate, so I'm not surprised they feel baited and switched. I never thought that was a no-mandate policy was realistic. I figured it would work well politically with the younger demographic.

Which is one of the reasons I supported Hillary in the primaries. I concede that Obama is a better organizer, administrator, and perhaps overall politician than Hillary, and I voted for him in the general.

And yes, I'm disappointed with some of his decisions. But I'm not surprised. And I feel that those who are acting surprised are showing themselves to be a bit naive. Well, I guess that's expected, too, since so many of them are newly engaged in politics.

I remember right around the election, Joe Biden remarking that folks were going to be mad at them in another year. We are beginning to find out what that meant.

Lindsay Stewart said...

As one of those pesky Canadians, cursed with a rational, decent, state run health care system, I just have to shake my head in dismay at the neighbours. I figured all along that Obama was going to be what he is, a wishy-washy push over. During the campaign I was screamed at for daring to question the platitudes that seemed sufficient to charm the masses. Back in that long lost November I warned of the potential sense of betrayal when hopes & dreams & change turned out to be no more than hopes and dreams and that there'd be precious little change. The folks that hated me then are awful quiet now.

And yes Obama is a washout, gutless president but the blame for this mess lies with the Democratic party and with the people. Over the summer, I sat and watched demonstration after demonstration, news show upon news show with some of the stupidest folk on the planet making their voices heard. The frickin' teabaggers took control of the discussion and did so unchallenged. The sort of anti-humanitarian, crap artist conservatives that deserve a place in the corner wearing a pointy cap grabbed the microphone and the progressives sat back and harrumphed. Where was the emotion and momentum that propelled the mediocre champion into the oval office? It lasted as long as a teenaged boy getting a lapdance.

Where were the organizers, where were the crowds, where were the counter rallies to try and press an agenda and a reform forward? Where was the pressure on the Democratic congressional and senate whores to try and get them to differentiate themselves from the Republican whores? When George the Lesser was picking his nose in the oval, there was never a doubt that the Republicans were driving the agenda bus, regardless of congressional advantage or not. Obama has yet to give the impression that he's actually in charge and the Republicans, with what should be a pretty weak position in the legislative bodies, are still quite firmly in charge of the agenda and national direction.

So I'm predicting a flat and dismal single term for Obama. Not much will change and not much will be accomplished and come 2012 you poor bastards am screwed.

GinaFan said...

Agreed, LBJ style arm twisting is bad. It's something that should not be needed, and can only be tolerated if the cause is just.

So are the forces we need to remove from the system Partizanism, and Special Interests? Some were thumping on those drums, as I remember. Can we fix the system before we try to pass proper reforms to Health Care and Social Security?

Partizanism, or maybe contrary-ism, needs to get negative reinforcement. Public embarrasment in a televised debate could be effective for this. I remember Obama was promoting the bill to the public, early on, and the republicans were saying, stop the speeches and come to the bargaining table. I think that this may have been where it was lost.

I think there's also another lesson: ask for the moon and then some so you have something to trade away when you get to the table.
