Question Post for LEVERAGE #203 "The Order 23 Job"

As usual, post here once you've finished watching, and I'll toss out some answers mixed with snark.

What was the deal with "Catwoman"? Oh wait, you meant post about the show. Never mind.

Anonymous said...

Ah, nothing like opening a "Leverage" thread with a "Catwoman" reference. Let the scrotum bashing begin.

CindyD said...

Why are there already comments on a question post for an episode that won't even air until "tomorrow"? What kind of idiots have nothing better to do than ...-Oh, wait-

m said...

I'll not let the fact that the ep hasn't aired yet stop me.

How did you do that one thing with the guy in the place? Did you use a thingy or was it done manually?

Alan Scott said...

Man, I'm from the place where this episode was set, and it's not really like that at all.

Mmmm, snark! My favorite!

Suggestions for music for Parker--when her character is being featured. An appropriate Eva Cassidy tune might be in order. The richness of Cassidy's voice matches what I see in Parker. b

Not a question, just sayin': It's been a hell of a day and I am really looking forward to kicking back with a drink and watching Leverage tonight.

Nice to see the drug/poison-down-the-string trick worked better for Parker than it did for Martin Blank in Grosse Pointe Blank...a deliberate nod?

Chris Ayers said...

Why would Hardison make the code for "all's well" odd numbered Treks & bad stuff even numbered Treks? Seems counterintuitive.

Ann said...

Obviously easy for Eliot to recognise an abused child. Guessing he had personal experience with that. Did you touch on that last season? I've seen it mentioned in fanfic (snicker), but don't remember it in any of the episodes.

briddie said...

Did I miss something? Why was Hardison snagging the marshal's keys in the first place?
I love the follow-through with Eliot's self-control, with Parker learning from other team members (even if Nate was increasingly creepy there) and Parker's boxing skills. Did she learn that from Eliot, or is that something we'd seen before? The side plot with the kid was brilliant.

Havenward said...

It seemed like there were a few geeky nods at the beginning of the episode... I particularly liked Parker putting the drops of drugs down a thread. Were you calling on something you pulled from actual research, or was that a nod toward Gross Point Blank?

Or more pointedly, was that a jab/nod to Crooked E with Eliot's "I hate those guys"?

And I have to say, that was probably one of my favorite sub plots so far. Not just because it was Eliot - that was some mean character development you pulled off in a small amount of time. Kudos on the writing for this one, and for Christian selling it so damn well.

Before my question, I want to tell you that I'm loving this season! So far, you are outdoing the first! This is my favorite show on television and I hope you get another season! At least one more...maybe more like 12...

Anyway, I was wondering if we are going to get more scenes of Eliot being the protector of kids. I loved the scene of him with Randy in the hospital, I thought it was absolutely adorable! Eliot is a teddy bear deep down!

And...just how sadistic is Nate going to get this season and will Sophie continue to find it attractive?

Becky said...

Loved the episode.

My mother wanted me to point out that if the guy was really a super germ freak, he never would have left the lid off of his water bottle like that.

Do you guys decide a theme for picking the various aliases used in an episode? I have this image in my head of you putting suggestions in a hat and pulling one out. 'And this week we'll be using.... science fiction authors!'

Jesse Savage said...

Hi! I know this isn't really about the episode, but I thought I'd ask anyways...Are there any plans for Leverage to air in Canada? Pretty please? Or are we just going to have to rely on DVDs?

Dolfyn Rider said...

Just how sadistic IS Sophie...and will we ever get to see??

marga templeton said...

nate mentioned the team members playing multiple parts this scam... might we see a story where there simply aren't enough of them to efficiently pull it off? or conversely, could there be a scam that doesn't require everyone and maybe someone feels left out?

Anonymous said...

Great shout-outs to ER, Gaslight and You Only Live Twice, which used the poison down the string long before Gross Pointe Blank.

Miss the conference room scenes and the development of the con that happens there. Will we see a return of this part of the team's process?

Anonymous said...

In the last episode, we see that Eliot's been teaching Parker to fight...something that seems to have stuck given her dropping into a boxer's stance when she punched out this week's mark. In this episode, she spends a lot of the time having Nate explain how this con worked. Is Parker going to become something of a sponge, soaking up tricks and skills from the rest of the team, expanding her skills out from Thief to Mastermind?

Jim Wright said...

John, in the final scene (Randy's apartment) there's what appears to be an Alaskan Commemorative Gold Pan on the dresser in the background - at least it sure looks like it. Am I right? If so, what's the story, if there is one.

Great episode, they just keep getting better. Leverage is one of the best shows I've seen in years.

Bardic Lady said...

Reiterating from twitter (@bardic_lady) does Parker drink alcohol? Also, how did Madoff-redux get a taser through security and the possibility of an MRI?

CaillieMac said...

Why did Parker rattle the duct - was it to keep him from picking up the drink? Also, what was up with the look between Hardison and Eliot when Parker said nurses don't wear skirts and white hose anymore?

My only complaints were that the two bad guys, Eddie and Charlie, look like twins and that Sophie seemed to really be overdoing the scratching.

Jim Wright said...

Bardic,

He got it from the cop's uniform laying on the floor outside the shower.

Rebecca said...

Oh man, I heard someone say Ft. Walton Beach and thought, "I can't freaking wait to see how they try turning that coast into this one." And that's when I realized that there really isn't much you could do to make me stop watching. The whole questions/mistake catching deal is just great fun to read, but the show is like crack.

Although I was still let down when I realized you weren't coming this way after all. Even for pretend. :)

Terry said...

Eddie got the taser from the clothes on the floor outside the security guard in the shower. A germaphobe would hate rats because they're terrible carriers of disease (bubonic plague, hanta, etc), so rats creeping in the air ducts would freak him out. And the look between Hardison & Eliot was probably alluding to some men's fantasies of hot nurses in short white uniforms, white hose and probably huge 6" stiletto heels.

We just keep getting layers and layers off Eliot. He's turning into a regular onion. I like the show so much I watch both viewings-- skipping that show in between. I wish they'd quit shoving it down our throats.

Bardic Lady said...

Clearly, I should learn not to ask my questions until after the second airing. *facepalm*

Keith R.A. DeCandido said...

I must confess to finding the subplot with Eliot and the kid to be pointless, distracting, unrealistic (the U.S. Marshal Service can do precisely nothing about an abused child), and cliched up the kazoo. This show is usually better than that.

Liked the con, and Nate's rather sadistic use of fear. Also, I don't think this guy was an aggressive germophobe, just one who was cautious. Honestly, half the people I know use that hand-sanitizer crap, and most of them are the exact opposite of germophobe. But everyone's scared of dying of an infectious disease.....

Oh, and the odd numbered movies are the bad ones -- shouldn't they be the ones for a bad situation?

Overall: good stuff, as usual, but less Very Special Episode nonsense in the future, please.

1. Regarding the argument between Eliot and Hardison over the size 17 shirt, was it scripted or did Christian and Aldis break that out themselves? HILARIOUS! I watched it three times before continuing on with the rest of the episode.

2. In every one of Eliot's fight scenes, Christian throws out "Come on!" with the beckoning hand gesture. I'm wondering if this is something Christian does on his own or if that was part of your team's development of character and fighting style for Eliot. [Either way, it makes me smile every time he does it.]

3. Amazing young actor playing Randy. In response to Eliot's questions, he was so patient in presenting his hesitation and the fear that was consuming him. I was astounded at how realistic he seemed. Is the boy a local actor you guys found or has he been featured in other projects?

This season is getting better with each episode, and you have all put such heart into this second season. I didn't think I could love the show any more than last season, but I'm over the moon now. It's an all-time favorite from here on out! Great work!

Cynthia said...

I liked the side note of Eliot and the child - it's nice to see Eliot as something more than just the tough guy.

As for the "hey, what the?" moments, I found more of these than usual.
-- What if the guy didn't open the bottle to drink?
-- How did Parker know she'd be tasered (and thus the belt o protection)

--Did I miss the bad guy beating up on the security guard (we saw the flashback of the guard saying yeah, that's the guy)

I always love the show but this one, with its shade of a classic Mission Impossible caper left me a little confused.

what was up with the look between Hardison and Eliot when Parker said nurses don't wear skirts and white hose anymore?

I imagine they were trying to con her into wearing such an outfit to help pop the ratings. :D

Hmmm...I see one popular novelist/media tie-in writer who's complaining himself out of any Leverage novels :)

A great episode, but again, needs beagles.

Unknown said...

Just how Sadistic will Nate get this season? I like the fact that he's so full of information about the psychology of fear and how he knew his plan would work, also I love Parker saying "you know since he quit drinking he's become a lot creepier" or something to that effect. Anyway I love this season and I love the show. I LOVE LEVERAGE! I will ignore a phone call from my own mother when that show is on! Keep up the great work guys! Killer cast! I love Timothy Hutton and Christian Kane, they are fantastic actors, so is everyone else in the cast but those two are my favorites!

Another great episode of misdirection and misleading ! (?)
Has the idea been tossed around if some of the bad guys the crew conned ever joined forces and waged a war against the leverage crew?

Also please if you be so kind as to scratch my fandom itch.

Who would come out on top in a war of wits between the Leverage crew vs Michael Westin? (Burn notice)

Micah said...

Fun episode. It honestly felt a bit dark, but maybe it's that Andromeda Strain situations kind of freak me out.

What happens when they realize that the nurse being zapped on the security footage doesn't actually work at the hospital, or is that another one of those handwavy go-with-it-we-got-the-bad-guy things?

Darkrose said...

I thought the stuff with Eliot and the kid worked, because Christian sold it. There were a couple of "How'd they do that/what'd I miss?" moments, but mostly, it was all fun train express, baby!

(Although I know it's totally a "omg you got it wrong!" thing, but Gina's North Shore accent kind of threw me out. Liked the Reveah hayah, though.)

Anonymous said...

I loved the subplot with Eliot this episode but noticed that it was the first of it's kind that had absolutely nothing to do with the con and it leads to my question.
Was this specifically put in as a sort of foreshadowing for Eliot's character or was it more of a character beat and as such will it be continued throughout the season with other characters?

Plus, any chance we'll see the Leverage team take on a bad guy already in jail? Cause I can only imagine the hilarity of the team "stealing" a prison. I'm picturing Nate as the warden, Sophie as some kind of doctor, Hardison and Parker as prison guards and Eliot as the reluctant inmate! ;)

Brad said...

I was a little iffy about the last couple episodes, but this one felt right in the groove for me. A couple handwavey bits, but that doesn't bug me too much.

I note, from the comments, that female fans definitely seem to be responding to Eliot-as-woobie, so well done there, Rogers.

Did anyone else keep thinking of the Silent Hill games in a lot of the eighth-floor sequences? Was that deliberate, or just an echo? And was there any particular reason we never saw our wronged Armenian fellow again after the first three minutes? Most episodes would at least have him getting the money, if the past is a good guide. Or was that deliberately underlining Nate's increasing emotional distance?

Speaking of which, re: Sophie finding Nate more attractive when she thinks he's a sadist... I freakin' knew it.

Save-vs-DM said...

Fantastic episode as always. I only regret that I have to watch it through Tivo, since you decided to schedule the game when we play D&D.

As a Portland Native, I have an odd question: I know that you shot the exteriors here, and I'm pretty certain you used the hospital downtown for that part, but the courthouse - I can clearly see a local church downtown in the background, but as far as I know the exterior doesn't have those words. Are you guys using digital effects to change words on buildings and stuff?

I thought this was one of the less believable episodes, but very enjoyable none the less.

Loved the little boy plot (though i wouldnt have minded seeing the dad shoved off the banister) . And the Hardison and Eliot banter was brilliant.

Jason said...

I also loved the shirt collar exchange between Eliot and Hardison. I only wish I'd had the Grosse Point Blank flash back from the string trick...last time i saw it was in Speed Racer.

Dug the Eliot/kid subplot. Spent about an hour wondering if it's meant to show that these people are predisposed towards being a good guy (Eliot going after the dad the first time) or whether this is Nathan rubbing off on the rest of the team (Eliot getting the Marshal to bust the dad). Either way, a nice bit of character development.

Also, when Nathan and Parker were talking about bypassing the executive area of the brain, and Parker mentions subliminal advertising, I thought "This would be a great time for a cutaway shot of a Hyundai". Then I realized that the subliminal advertising is already working...

Liz said...

Is this the first time we've seen Nate and the team decide to go after a bad guy before they actually have a client? Nice touch. Actually, lots of nice touches. Off the top of my head:

The droplet going down the thread, gorgeous shot. That the team only had an hour or two to pull the whole thing off. The Hardison/Spencer banter about the shirt - too flippin funny. Sophie got another death scene! And as sadistic as Nate was with this one, our bad guy truly deserved every minute of it.

Even the subplot got me with this one. Nothing to do really with the main plot, but having definite implications. I liked that Hardison not only had to get Eliot back on task at one point, but then had to warn him too (Ralph O. Khan? HAHA!). I think some folks may try to read too much into why Eliot does what he does. Me, I think it's pretty simple, and it goes back to something he said before: helping people gets under your skin.

Nice, by the way, when Eliot seems to realize that kicking ass, while satisfying, isn't going to completely fix the problem.

Good job, all. This might be my favorite so far this season.

Absolutely FASCINATING. Each one of the characters were stunning -ly represented by the amazing actors and actresses. The script was strategically funny, gracious, unexpectec ... the props, the scene cuts ... I didn't want to blink my eyes, I didn't want to miss a thing. WOW

Howiec said...

My question is simple - who is the better thief: Parker or John Rogers? The drug down the filiment was a direct swipe from James Bond (You Only Live Twice). The convincing the mark that he has a fatal disease in order to give up the $ - vintage Mission Impossible. I think Parker is the better thief, because John you have been caught. Best episode yet this season - just sayin'

AByassee said...

Loved the episode. Tim Hutton is bringing more and more depth to Nate, and I'm with Sophie, the sadistic streak is kind of hot. Chris Kane did a beautiful, understated job with Eliot and the abused kid. As always, Parker rocked my boat and Hardison was hysterical. I was a little uneasy, as others have mentioned, about the U.S. Marshall intervening with Randy. That's a bit of a stretch, although maybe it was only intended to put the fear into Dad. Did I miss something or was there an explanation of why all the cops in town were sympathetic to Dad? Anyway, I've been obsessively re-watching the S1 DVDs and getting increasingly hooked in S2. Above and beyond the outstanding characters, the show is so damn much fun!

While I love that they have moved the show to Boston (hence my name). I will say that I wish it was done in Boston vs. Portland. My biggest fear came true tonight. Sophie doing a Boston Accent. Now I know that Bostonians are known for forgetting to use the letter "r", but it isn't the easiest accent to master. All I ask of the powers that be is that you don't make us sound like a bad comic strip character. We don't speak "that" nasally and we definitely don't sound like Cliff Claven on Cheers. Hell, give me a call and you'll hear what we really sound like
Also, I'd love to see you guys pull off the North End.

My question for this week: When the staff breaks episodes, how much about the traits of our once-off characters gets decided in the writers room? Do y'all just say, "the mark is a hedge fund manager," and send the writer off to make up everything else about him?

And was our mark this week wearing eyeliner or eyeshadow? It looked weirdly like he was in some shots, and it threw me back to old stereotypes about Middle Eastern men being more effeminate (I'm talking old like, Aeschylus wrote about this stuff back in the 5th century BCE). I'd be so happy if it weren't true and I was just seeing things.

Love this show! I discovered it quite by accident a few weeks ago, iTune'd the eps, then got the DVDs and proceeded to get hubby hooked on it as well (you're welcome).

I still can't decide what I like more – seeing them get everything right and leaving massive amounts of "WTF?" in their wake, or knowing it's all gone wrong and watching them try to pull it out of their asses on the fly. Either way, it's a great ride!

The "darkness" of this ep was great. Nate is a seriously scary, twisted dude. And Eliot and Hardison together just continue to rock (I have developed a serious Eliot fixation, which my husband kindly pretends not to notice). And hubby (comics/Star Trek geek) wants to adopt Hardison.

Say, any chance in future y'all could go after an oil company? 'Cause hubby's on his way now to a job fair since those bastards laid off every oil man in our area just to show the administration they're not going down without a fight.

Forget the bear. I want to see Eliot beat down an oil exec. That would be sweet.

Much love, y'all!

Another fun episode, another better-than-previous villain. Having Bernie Madoff in the headlines makes an arrogant jerk like this guy a lot more plausible, and the actor playing him did a great job keeping the character from going over the top.

Liked the abused-kid subplot, liked the badass morgue fight, loved the eerie image of Sophie in the hazmat suit.

No questions this time out. Just wanted to say thanks for taking the time out of what must be an insane schedule to answer your loyal, often nagging viewers' queries.

Second poser... I know you have been saying that Nathan is not s nice guy. But were not some of his issues resolved last season. I see not nice, but angry and bitter?? When he quit the booze did he lose his heart too? (Maybe give it to Eliot?) Mr. Kane said something in a vid about Eliot showing that his heart "grew three sizes that day" (don't you just love a Suess reference) and its nice to see.
Anyway, also I love how you make sure that Parker is a little crazy but NOT STUPID. She does get some things!

Last night's episode, like the other episodes, was wonderfully done. Again, the key to LEVERAGE is that you've made the characters likeable. It's what has made shows like THE ROCKFOR FILES, BURN NOTICE and MONK hits.

LEVERAGE breaks the 9-10 PM rut of being too dark and depressing. That time slot has been weighted down with shows that make you want to slit your wrists.

The other highlight is the use of guest stars and superb character actors. I can't begin to tell you how nice that is.

I admire and enjoy the series and will continue to spread the good word.

The root of the name "Amygdala" is the Greek word for almond. Which is also the word they used for tonsils (because they look like little almonds).

So, there are a gazillion questions out there already and I didn't read all of them so maybe you're answering this anyway, maybe not.

I think I remember you guys saying that Eliot is one of the characters we will learn more about in this season and boy, does that make me happy (HUGE Eliot fan here, you can tell Mr. Kane that I just love what he does with the character.) so it's no surprise that 2x02 already made me go \o/ and this one did, too.

Still, I'm a little worried that maaaaaaybe it's going a little fast? Last episode we had Eliot opening up to Sophie and being all 'Those guys fight for their lives and also: I'm really good at controlling myself because I had to learn that lesson a long time ago.' Stuff like that breaks my heart for Eliot and that's a good thing, too. But right after we had THAT Eliot comes to the rescue of an abused child which is on the one side really awesome because <) he obviously cares and b) maybe has some experience with that himself but on the other side I think it was almost too soon after the last episode to show that.

Man, I definitely don't mean to make you stop showing off Eliot's good/soft side 'cause I believe that deep down inside (somewhere hidden ;o) ) he's a big teddy bear but to find that place it would take more than a year of working with others and slowly building something like a family.

So, the ACTUAL question is: He's not turning into a sof cotton ball in the course of three or four episodes, right? We'll see more banter and snark and bad mood?

Kerri said...

More of a general question that's been bugging me since The Homecoming Job - How old is Parker supposed to be? I always thought she was supposed to be about Hardison's age (early to mid twenties). But in Homecoming, her file mentioned winning the company sack race in 1999. Which would probably make her about 10 years older than I've been thinking. So, what is it?

Patrick said...

I'm not really blown away by this episode. I was expecting more of a time constraint, really, but it seems the team can use magic. I mean, they make the mark sick, all right. And then, how much time do they have until Eddie's in the hospital? Time enough for Parker to get cop uniforms, medical uniforms, a hazmat suit; for Hardisson to install speakers and record all kinds of sounds?

I thought we'd see the team having to make do with maybe a stolen ambulance or some scrapped costumes, not being more or less fully outfitted. Also, the anti-stun belt really came out of the blue. It didn't feel like an explanation for how they got Eddie.

frabjous said...

Knowing this was shot after last week's episode made the Eliot stuff seem less heavy-handed to me; his encounter with the kid reads like the setup for the speech about what you can and can't control, versus hitting us over the head with something we understood from last time.

Loved the episode otherwise - I like Parker's horror/fascination with Nate's mad skills as a continuing bit. My one quibble was with casting and introduction - the fake marshal looked enough like the mark, both in ethnic markers and in the way he was dressed, that at first I thought he must be part of the mark's team or family. If we'd seen the marshals being cop-like somehow, rather than everyone just sitting there, it would have been clearer.

Absolutely AWESOME episode. Definately think that the sub plot with Eliot and Randy provided Character insight. Christian played the part really well being the tough guy but realising that he couldn't just put the fear of God into the Father to make him stop he had to do something practical and he asked for help. I imagine that would have been pretty hard for the old Eliot to ask for help but the character seems to have grown and realised that it's okay to depend on others for help.

That seems to be a running theme over the last 3 episodes, the team seems to be trying to learn from each other and have come to trust and depend on eachother. Is this the direction you are wanting the show to go in?

Nate is definately starting to freak me out as he IS getting saddistic, and the fact that Sophie thinks that makes him more attractive means that she is starting to freak me out too...lol

Are you trying to play to the Family angle, Nate and Sophie are the disfunctional parents, Hardison and Parker are the younger siblings and Eliot is either the Big Brother or the Hard assed Uncle, I can't decide?

But let me finish with this...LEVERAGE IS THE BEST SHOW ON TV!!! Keep making it guys and we will keep watching!

This question is not for this episode specifically but for the series in general. And I am having troubles phrasing this so I'll just go for it: Will there ever be any gay in Leverage? Besides that small spur of the moment thing in The 12 Step Job we haven't seen anything. Will there be a gay client or crook? Or possibly one of the team playing a gay part for a con? Cause I guess it's too late to have one of them come out as gay for real unfortunately...

Love the show and I showed last nights ep to my mum as well and she really liked it too.

Okay, sorry I watched on Netflix, but I can only afford my $20 a month internet and $10 a month Netflix, not cable TV.

Oh, and WTF was up with the car the mark stole near the end? Who puts their keys above the visor? Everybody knows that's the first place thieves look. It's in every movie and TV show out there! Why haven't the people in TV land figured it out? Plus, if you leave the keys in your unlocked car, you don't get the insurance when its stolen.

"Oh, and WTF was up with the car the mark stole near the end? Who puts their keys above the visor? Everybody knows that's the first place thieves look."

I thought that was the hitman's car; I assumed that the crew moved it so he can find it.

I half-expected for the cops to open the trunk and find the hitman taped up inside. (Probably would have felt too much like the ending of The Tap-Out Job, though.)

I liked the Elliot subplot with the kid, but was also curious where it was going. Could this be a set-up for a recurring subplot? Maybe Randy's dad comes gunning for Elliot?

Christina Lollobrigida said...

I know there are a lot mixed feelings about the reveal of Eliot keeping an eye on that boy, since it does hint to an abusive past for his character.

I personally am hoping that you are going to avoid the standard cliché background story of the guy that had a rough childhood opting to get "strong" when he got bigger. I know that there is curiosity into his background by the viewers, but without revealing too much, are you trying to avoid the standard story with Eliot and give us something that isn't what most the viewers are already trying to piece together themselves? I really hope so, since I've seen this background story done almost to death.

I find it funny that so many posts here claim that the poison down the thread trick came from some show or movie. Guys, this is a real, honest-to-God Ninja trick practiced for hundreds of years. No one in Hollywood made it up and I'm sure the writers were quite aware of this.

Hi, as a follow-up to the Stephen Moffat question (NEW DR WHO! WOOOOO!) and the "It would be good to do an episode in England"... on the off chance this ever happens, could you do us a favour and NOT set it in London, EVERY American TV show that does an British episode sets it in London. It's a bigger country than that, set one in Liverpool... "The John lennons Childhood Home Job" or Manchester (the greatest city on earth)... "The Turing's Baby Job"? or... well, it just annoys me to see London as the only place in Britain on American TV! Cheers, love the show, now I just need to convince the BBC to show it over there so other people can see it!

To respond to the complaints that the the deputy Marshal didn't have jurisdiction regarding domestic disputes in Boston... well, he was a neutral third party who could contact the IA dept of the police dept to make sure a proper investigation was launched. Do law enforcement officers have the right to remove a child who they believe to be in imminent danger? If he took Randy to child protective services they could initiate an investigation as well? Oh, and one final, and more realistic possibility crossed my mind. Since he's stationed in Boston no doubt he knows some cops in the BPD who could intervene on the boy's behalf.

I really liked this episode. The subplot and Randy's rescue at the end was a much needed heart warmer in contrast to the bit of sadistic play by Nate and Co.

Ralph O Kahn. squee!

A bit late but regarding last week's episode, but w/ all the yellow thrown about I thought it was originally set in Iowa...

I'm enjoying the season so far and I'm looking forward to what to come. Amy Berg episode next, I love her eps.

On to the question now. Did Nate and Sophie have their comms in when she said she finds him even more attractive than usually? Did he hear her?

DaveMB said...

Scrambled D has it right with respect to the US marshal and the boy. The boy is almost ready to complain but is afraid of the local cops -- he doesn't know about the state child protective services. But the marshal does, and the boy trusts the marshal enough to follow him and make first contact with the state people, who will now unleash holy hell on the dad.

I expect a lot of people read this thread on Crooked Timber, where an NYPD captain who is also a grad student in philosophy gave his perspective on Gatesgate:

http://crookedtimber.org/2009/07/23/police-discretion-a-different-perspective/

Captain del Pozo emphasizes the police officer's role in enforcing social norms, in the way that perhaps any citizen could and should but with the added bonus that the uniform gives him, that he will at least be listened to. Commenters on the thread stress that the police officer has to show restraint given his power to use deadly force. One thing we found in Gatesgate is that many or most police officers believe that disrespecting a police officer constitutes disorderly conduct, where clearly some such disrespect is protected political speech.

Anyway, Eliot here got to use this informal power of moral suasion as a fake cop, but it wasn't effective without the legal powers that a fake cop didn't have...

My question is...have you found a particular scam/subject/con/story that you would have liked to have had two hours to tell the story rather than one? If not, is that something that we can see in the future, because the storytelling of a two hour episode would be excellent.

Increasingly Twisted Sober Nate is, in a word, awesome. Much as I feel for his struggle, I want to see him hit the point where somebody on the team quietly begs him to take a drink.

I also had a flashback moment to some writer or other claiming to have destroyed the WB with his mind a couple years back. Funny, that.

My semi-obligatory WTF moment came right off the bat: It's a shame to see such a venerable trope run out of steam, but how the hell does an aggrieved victim get a pistol into a courtroom these days?

And, you know, if we're taking a vote, I liked the Eliot side story.

CindyD said...

Although I enjoyed it, I have my doubts that the previously mentioned 30 percent of your viewers are actually going to understand the actus reus and mens rea speech.

My questions is didn't Chris used to actually practice law before becoming the fabulous Leverage writer he is today? ;-)

In Wrath of Kahn they use those nasty ear-bug things to control Chekov's mind. Take out the earbug, he's his own man again. Was this particular ST intentionally used to parallel Eliot taking out the ear comm and going off on his own, out of Hardison's 'control'?

I'm still trying to decide what I thought of the Order 23 Job. There was some good stuff in there, mostly character work, but the main plot I'm only kind of meh on this time, not sure why.

My question: Do you know how you're going to work around Gina's pregnancy? I don't see her hiding behind folders and other props (though she was hugging that pillow last week, hmmm....) Would you actually use the pregnancy as part of a con?

Unknown said...

is the fact that there was a video security camera pointed at the stairwell during eliot's shake down of the dad gonna come back to bit them in the ass?

Anonymous said...

Rocking episode!

Really enjoying Nate's character arc and can't wait to see more! :)

NJM said...

The GF and I thought that this was a nice little episode. She thought you banged the "Eliot was an abused child" drum just a little too hard, but we both thought that the character work was nice. Your best work happens when the cons evolve from the characters, not when the characters get plugged into the cons. (Personally, I view your Season 1 ender to be the Leverage gold standard.) This was a fun ride where we got to enjoy the crew.

Oh and: More Hardison nerdity! In fact, how about we rename the series "Hardison and and his Friends" starring Aldis Hodge? I think it could work.

Terri said...

Great episode. Oh and I don't always expect every detail to be 100% accurate, sometimes when you're being entertained, you don't need to overanalyze all the details, just enjoy the ride.
Question: Do the actors ever ad-lib during filming? Sometimes the bickering between the characters (particularly Eliot and Hardison with the "cowboy with self esteem issues") makes it seem like some of the stuff is unscripted. So is ad-libbing allowed and if it is, how much freedom are the actors given?

Nato said...

Dee, I was gonna ask about Eliot and the security camera, too. But remember, Hardison had full access to the hospital's security feed, so I'm guessing Eliot assumed he could make sure that bit of footage never found its way to the tapes.

Either that, or Eliot figured that, with his back to the camera, no one would make too big of a deal of a uniformed cop confronting a suspect.

NG said...

David Hunt said...

Guys, I realize that the even numbered Star Treks are supposed to the good ones, but if Hardison had reversed the good/bad designations, then the writers wouldn't have been able to use the "Ralph O. Khan" line as the trouble sign. And I assume that the line was the whole point...

Denita said...

Interesting question about the earbug, Bridget. I hadn't thought of that at all.

I don't really have any questions that haven't already been posed...just wanted to say I throughly enjoyed the episode, y'all.

I found Nate to be really kind of creepy and loved the bickering between Eliot and Hardison. The Star Trek line was awesome and so was the con. I liked Eliot's backstory subplot, especially that it was a seperate thing from the con. It was starting to seem like he was the only one without a past so I'm glad we got a glimpse of it.

To those saying the Marshal didnt have the power to remove the child.

US Marshals have the same powers as a sheriff. Just because they don't use them on a daily basis, doesnt mean they dont have the power.

@Ann. Right now Nate is a dry drunk. In other words, he is sober but he hasnt done aything to combat his demons or the inherent character defects in an alcoholic personalty. So yes, he's a bit of a bastard right now and will be until he gets some sort of help.

To all those complaining about Eliot being abused, who the hell said he as abused? You are assuming that from what we've seen, but it could just as easily been a friend/cousin/girlfriend who was abused and young eliot was unable to stop it back then. Couldnt that be why he's so determined to help this kid?

I love the little hints the writers drop about the characters pasts, and i love filling in the blanks myself. Though i must confess, i havent come up with a good explenation for eliot stealing a monkey yet!

Rayhne said...

This isn't a question about this episode but one of curiosity (and needed for a piece of fan fiction). What is Sterling's position/title now in IYS?

And now a comment - I am hoping fervently that Sterling doesn't actually become a bad guy. Keep him on the side of the law and the team's nemesis.

Gina really has to work on her Boston accent, as the combination of South Townie and Valley girl still has a bit of a British accent from it (trust me, I grew up in Lowell and my accent has been used as a model for several dialogue and dialect coaches! different towns/regional variations just mean an additional beer or two to go from Southie to Gloucester)

Something really exotic, valuable especially in Myanmar. Or maybe Pakistan.

I had problems with this ep but still mostly enjoyed it, so I'm not going to complain. Although I felt the subplot with the kid was unecessary in terms of the main story, I love the character of Eliot so it made me happy to see another side of him. Bit cliched, yes, but as others have said, Christian Kane totally sold it, as did the child actor who was superb.

Not going to be one of my highlights of the season but if that's the worst you can do, really, really not complaining! :)

We got all the way down to here and I'm the first to ask... was it Order *23* in order to be a nod to Roberts Shea and Anton Wilson's Illuminatus? (And/or Order 66 from Star Wars 3?)

Loved the ep - the wives and I all feel that after a slightly shaky opener, the next 2 eps have been strong and funny and unquestionably Leverage. Looking forward to Parker getting really scary (as you twittered from the writing room recently).

And... if Sophie's finding a more sadistic Nathan more attractive, does that imply possible masochistic traits - or is it just the old girls-love-a-bad-guy thing? (Or was it just a throwaway line?)

Thanks again to you and the team, Rogers... Leverage is the highlight of the week.
(And if you ever did the crossover with Burn Notice I would kvell. Truly, I would.)

Totally dating myself -- Anyone else remember 'Tales of the Gold Monkey'? I can sooo see Eliot involved in locating/retriving a gi-normous solid gold statue from a hidden cave/temple on a (maybe not-quite-so-remote-anymore) Pacific Island.

Okay, gang? "Rolling poison down a thread" is an assassination technique going back centuries. It's one of those ninja things you read about in source material that predates mutant turtles.

What Mrs. Serpent and I want to know is... what the heck did Parker drop in his drink to hit him so hard, so fast?

Other exchanges:
Parker: "Is it just me, or does Nate get more sadistic when he's sober?"
Sophie: "Is it just me, or does that make him even sexier?"
Your Obedient Serpent: "Yes, Sophie, yes. It's just you!"
Mrs. Serpent: "No, no it's not."

Raises hand, I do! As much as I'd like to think it was some weird gold encrusted statue, I have more fun imagining Eliot running after a real, live monkey

DaveMB said...

YOS -- Parker referred to rohypnol (the most common date rape drug, at least on TV) as what she put in his drink. I would guess they took some poetic license in how quickly a drop or two would hit him, but what do I know.

It's been fun to see this season that their scams tend to be on the edge of collapse. Of course this week they appear to have been making it up almost entirely as they went along (though did Nate know in advance that the eighth floor of the hospital was mostly abandoned, because he had decided on some elements of the scam beforehand?). There was nothing they did that was intended to be convincing for more than a couple of hours, and in fact their covers collapsed earlier due to the bad luck of the fake marshal being less credulous than the real one.

Since this is cinematic rather than realistic fiction, I have no problem with tangential elements of the plot just being referred to the characters' magical abilities. I don't believe that Parker could steal all those uniforms in ten minutes, but Parker is the world's greatest thief so ok, it's not central to the plot. I don't believe anything about Hardison's fake golf ball but it was good comic relief, a nice homage to Goldfinger, and totally tangential. (Should I believe anything about that golf ball?)

Oh, and as a former Bostonian and teacher of lots of Bostonians, I agree that Sophie's accent was not at all convincing, though the character was fun.

WV: "respi" -- a plan you use in the kichun

When you mentioned last week that one of the themes this year was "what happens when their 'superpowers' failed?" We saw hardison's inability to "hack a hick". I kinda wondered what would be a problem that Eliot couldn't beat? Some kind of big fight? Would we see Eliot actually lose a fight?

This episode answered that. A threat he couldn't beat or use his usual skills against. A very nice touch. Very nicely done.

My wife, who is a neuroscientist, usually winces whenever there's brain science on a fiction television show. However, she didn't seem to think that Nate's discussion of doing a end run around the executive portion of the brain was too bad especially considering that his character isn't really a doctor. She said it was "an interesting hypothesis".

She was very glad that you did not mention dopamine levels, which seems to be the standard brain bit writers that don't know anything about the brain throw into television scripts when they want to talk about the brain.

Good on you for getting the amygdala right.

All of the uniforms and equipment the team used in this ep are fairly standard stuff, frequently needed for cons... cop uniforms, nurse uniforms, hazmat suit. I assume they had that stuff already on hand.

It was a fun episode, although kind of perplexing in some places.

In a high-profile trial of a hedge fund manager with a courtroom full of his victims, there's no way they'd be careless enough to let someone smuggle a handgun in. And I'm not too clear on how Parker knew Eddie would leave an open drink right below that grate, or that he would taser her later on. Considering the cops are obviously going to try to charge Eddie with assault for tazing Parker, what's going to happen when it becomes obvious the "victim" was a fake nurse? Won't that start to lend credibility to Eddie's wild story about a gang of con artists after him?

The character moments were really good.

I'm surprised everyone is saying Sophie was doing a Boston accent... I could have sworn it was a nasal Fran Drescher-style Queens accent.

Any chance of Leverage airing in the UK soon? I'm watching by, um, Hardison-approved methods (and getting friends hooked, and buying the DVDs, I promise!) but it'd be fabulous to see it on TV over here.

Also, are we/Nate/the team ever going to meet Sophie's boyfriend?

CindyD1000 said...

@Anonymous in preceding post (Re Leverage in the UK):

Dean Devlin, in response to a similar inquiry, recently posted this on twitter: "UK networks not interested in buying the show. tell your friend to write to her favorite channels and tell them she wants it."

In light of that, UK fans started a Petition requesting UK TV channels to bring Leverage to the UK. You can sign it at http://www.gopetition.co.uk/online/29686.html

I love the character of Eliot Spencer--truly, madly, deeply love him, and Christian Kane is beyond fantastic in the role. But I wonder if there's been a conscious choice to position him as a romantic lead because I'm starting to kind of miss some of the ensembley goodness of Season 1. I'm not exactly complaining. I could get quite blissed out watching Eliot read the phone book as long as it was written with the same intensity and humor as his character usually is, but I feel that way about the whole team. Are we going to get more shows that highlight the rest of them?

@adc1966 I had the same take on Sophie's accent and mannerisms--Queens or Long Island, NY. And very funny and believable. (I worked for years to lose that accent, so I think I have some street cred on this one...)

I got distracted by the gun in the courtroom. Most courts, even in small towns (mine's 60,000) have security. You can't even bring in cell phones. As a result I tuned out & it wasn't till I watched it again that I caught some of the more subtle bits. To me, all that was needed was the punch out by the victim. I wondered about the marshall taking the kid, but accepted it since all officers of the court have an obligation to intervene in child abuse cases. Once I watched again, I liked the con. Still not sure about the hitman theme. Not sure who hired who.

DaveMB said...

blackdog -- Either Eliot or Hardison said that the hit man was hired by "the Armenian mob", to prevent the Madoff-analog from further cooperating with the authorities (as the judge said he was when giving the light sentence).

I noticed the "Samuel Prescott Federal Courthouse" in "Belbridge, MA". Prescott, of course, was the guy who eventually delivered Paul Revere's message after Revere and Dawes were captured -- a better choice to name a courthouse after than, say, Rush Limbaugh's dad. The Boston-area town I most associate with Armenians is Watertown, which is next to Cambridge and Belmont, hence I suppose "Belbridge".

blackdog said...

On the second time through I caught the mob connection--but if it was an affinity scheme and the client was Armenian, it seems odd that the client would need Leverage's help. Or would take a gun to the courtroom if he had mob backing. It seems like that part of the story wasn't fleshed out for us.
