LEVERAGE: "The Snow Job" Open thread

Running late. Go ahead and post reactions and questions for "The Snow Job", and on Thursday I'll combine answers to those questions with the ones from last week.

This was the second episode filmed, and I haven't seen it in a while -- interesting to see how the acting rhythms have changed, and how our attitudes toward the characters changed as the chemistry between the actors evolved.

Oh, and for what it's worth -- those "Next Weeks' Scenes" looked cool, eh? They should; "The Twelve Step Job" was directed by Rod Hardy, and is one of my favorite episodes of the season. I can't wait to see it again.

Leverage on TNT is one of the reasons I enjoy having DirecTV on the west coast. I watch it once with small person at 7pm local, then again with SPousal Unit Dad at 9pm. It's so much fun!

In addition to being filmed early in the process, was it also originally scheduled earlier in the season? It sure seemed like it to me - even though that really didn't take away from the enjoyment of the show.

When Leverage comes out on DVD, I hope there could be an option to see the shows in the intended order, not just the order in which they air.

Oh, man, that cut to Germany during the ski-lodge scene was genius.

And oh, hey! That's Jonathan Frakes. Benefit of having him direct the Wedding Job, I imagine.

*checks IMDB* And it looks like he's directing next weeks episode with--Gasp! *Faints in a fit of Trekkiness*

I know you've discussed before that the episodes are out of order. But I don't remember reading WHY that is so. I'm so sorry if this is a duplicate, but can you tell us, please?

Loving every show, regardless, though. It is literally the only TV I watch. Hope it stays around for a long, long time.

Oh, and btw, do you happen to know if TNT is trying to beat a path to being a major network the way Fox did with 90210, Melrose Place, etc.? Because I always thought of TNT as the old movie channel, but now they've got Bones, The Closer, Leverage and what looks a good new show, Trust Me. I'm impressed.

Now, when you say second episode filmed, is that "after the pilot" or "including the pilot". I was watching this and it totally felt like the third episode (after the Nigerian job and the Homecoming Job). Nate's drinking problem just felt like it was something of an early show to a season.

Anonymous said...

Couple of things.

1) I'm curious about the discussions in the writer's room about how far to take Nate's drinking problem. You need it because it gives an emotional grounding to the character. But if it gets too heavy, it could (To use your term) derail the fun train. Can't wait to see where your going with it.

2) Your comment last week about Wheaton doing an episode next year. Please, PLEASE cast him as a mark. He'd be great. I saw him play a network executive on "Tiny Little Chicken Machine Show" some time back and he was incredibly slimy in it. If I were ever insane enough to remake "Die Hard", I'd cast him as Ellis in a heart beat.

I didn't catch Jonathan Frakes on-screen -- where was he?

My word is "ineatiq" -- Albanian for "inedible"?

Anonymous said...

Frakes is in the top of the third act as Nate is issuing marching orders in the hospital living room. I had to look at the scene a second time to catch him

So, if this was the second episode filmed, does that mean that it was supposed to be the second episode aired? I'm lovin' this show to bits, John, but I am continually frustrated by television networks going "Dramatic arcs? Gradual development of characters? Whatever. Any order's fine." Seriously. I know it's not exactly standard operating procedure for DVD sets, but I'd love it if the set placed the episodes in their intended order. Having watched all of them up until now, I can juggle them in my head and get a clearer picture of how things were originally slated to go, but it'd be nice not to have to keep a cheat-sheet and skip around when it comes time to show them to friends.

So, Snow Job...yeah. Definitely not a side of Nate we've seen in the show that much. Comments on another forum I frequent mentioned how it seemed odd that Nate, characterized as a drunk and a burnout, didn't seem to do much drinking. Well, here we go then.

Favorite moments: a tie between Eliot and Hardison arguing over who has to inject a cadaver's brain with hot wax and Parker's freakout over Nate giving out a $100,000 check. Actually, the bit that cracked me up the most was after Eliot got up to drag Parker back from the hallway, there was this brief moment with Hardison alone in the room with the cadaver. "'Sup?" Did Aldis Hodge ad-lib that, or was that bit actually in the script?

Only four more episodes to go with this season. Everything I've read so far indicates that the show is doing pretty well in the ratings...so what happens after this season wraps up? Do you know yet whether we'll be seeing a season two in the near future (which you will be continuing to write for, yes)?

Hospital wait room I mean.

Now, when you say second episode filmed, is that "after the pilot" or "including the pilot".

Should be "after the pilot", since the script cover for "The Bank Shot Job" we saw a while back bore production #101.

Kai Tave said...

On immediate reflection, I just realized that of course this couldn't be the second episode, because the Homecoming Job is when they bought the office, and this episode had scenes in the computer room. Duh. Still, the out-of-order business is annoying.

Unknown said...

Would love to know the exact order of the shows. The last 2 have shown the team to be a bickering mess, while the first half had them gelling pretty well. Great show

Havenward said...

While being the second episode filmed, I had thought you'd said previously that the rest of the episodes (including this one) would air in their appropriate arc order... And honestly I really like where Nate's drinking has come up as a definitive problem

I have to ask... was the skipping rope comment scripted? It was possibly one of my favorite lines in the episode.

Also (and sorry for asking twice, I figure y'all are busy) do you plan to or hope to see Leverage in any other mediums besides television? And if you could have a Leverage comic done but couldn't do it yourself, what writer/artist team would most geek you out to see working on it?

Thanks for another great week... (Why isn't it Tuesday yet...)

this doesn't relate to the Snow Job- I have it DVRed and haven't watched it yet... but, I wanted to know if any of the writers are connected to the Midwest or Kansas in general. I have noticed that the state has been mentioned a few times, and you really never see it mentioned in TV or movies. Not unless you're talking about the Wizard of Oz or tornadoes. Just curious.

Another question on the out-of-order thing:

The creators of Eureka did a podcast where they talked about doing serious re-edits of episodes aired out of order to make them fit as best they could into their new spots the seasonal plot-arcs.

Your arcs are more subtle so it's only a little jarring when you don't re-edit. Was that a deliberate choice anticipating the problem?

Unknown said...

I was really hoping for a Michael Weston cameo from Burn Notice or at least to see Sam show up when they were in Miami. I will pretend he is the one who sent Frakes to the hospital.

Also, why not use the name of a real county in Mississippi? Was it a clearance issue or just not wanting to offend anyone there?

Absolutely loved the episode.

One of the best aspects of it was the scammers' family dynamics.

I love how quickly the script and actor set up the douchebag role for the cool son, and it turns out that despite smart son's financial control, it ends up being douchebag son who brings them all down.

Sean Fagan said...

It didn't come together well for me -- it felt rushed, at the end, and so the emotional payout wasn't as good.

I also really hate it when we see a scene, but then a later recap of that scenes shows extra bits that were not at all indicated as having been cut out. It felt like cheating.

Nate's alcoholism seemed to come out of nowhere, since we hadn't seen it before. But it did give some depth to his and Sophie's relationship.

Favourite scene had to be, "Help. Help." whilst dangling from one arm.

Jay said...

I caught right away that the women who went to get the paperwork for the dad and the son was not the woman who returned with the paperwork -- the dress was different; I thought it was a continuity slip-up.

The part with the cop in Nate's car in the flashback did feel like a cheat, as there was no obvious point in the original conversation where I could see that exchange fitting in. Maybe if the cop had lingered in the car for a second before getting out in the external shot...

I thought this might have been the funniest episode yet - the cutaway to Germany being just one of many great jokes - despite Nate's heavier drinking. I also especially like how the biggest slimeball in the family turned out to be Dennis who'd come up with the lien scam to begin with. Nice.

My only problem was that because the team has never lost, I didn't take it seriously when Sophie tore up the initial check and when Nate paid Dennis the $100K. The team always wins; they'll get theirs back in the end.

Do you worry in the writers' room that you can't (please forgive me for saying this) raise the stakes enough when the audience always expects the team to win?

More of my thoughts in my review.

Wow, lot of comments, which I'll do Thursday -- I like to leave Waid's stuff on top for a day.

But no, we don't edit them to fit broadcast arc, and yes -- this should have been in the first six, intended as #2 after Homecoming. And yes, the final Act Five edit is a bit of a mess. When we do flashbacks we play fair, but the time frame we wound up with was ... funky.

Anonymous said...

What is the reason for the network showing episodes out of order?

Wouldn't it be just as easy to show them in the proper order so that coherent character arcs are actually possible?

I liked this episode a lot. The girls were especially good. I can't help but wish Christian Kane and Sam Anderson had gotten a scene together, though.

Jay said...

John - Sorry, this question isn't (directly) related to the Snow Job, but I think it's relevant to your blog in general. I just saw an article that had me thinking. How does streaming Netflix affect the pay writers get for shows/features as opposed to when I actually get a disk? This is a hugely noob question, but I'm curious. Thanks.

Joe Helfrich said...

I've got to agree with all the comments about the air order; it's been jarring to watch them go from on big job to pay them all off, to charity jobs without batting an eye, and now bickering over money. These guys are still thieves, and we haven't seen them get their cut, or seen them decide to, on general, give it up, so it's been a bit odd. The character development beats are entirely off--Sophie and Nate's tension compared with the concern he shows for her in the Bank Job, everyone concerned about cash, Parker's skills at improv, which have been previously mentioned, etc. Even if the DVD can't show the episodes in intended order, a cheat-sheet telling us the intended order would be nice.

(Also, did Sophie and Nate contradict their personal history in this episode, compared to what they said last week? I don't have a DVR at the moment, so I couldn't go back and check.)

One final question; a while back, you said something about possibly opening the flood gates for submissions if you got a second season. Last I heard, there was only an order for six scripts, which I know doesn't leave much in the way of time or writing slots, but is there any point (besides the practice) of me finding a plot to latch onto the scene that I have in my head?

(Yes, I know, you have kill your darlings, and the scene wouldn't make it to shooting, much less air. But I've got to start somewhere....)

Unknown said...

I haven't followed up on your blog from scratch on ... (I know I should probably do that ...) and I get really confused with the intended order of the episodes vs. the order they're aired now.
Just in case the DVD will have it all in the airing order ... is it too much to ask for a list of the episodes in the originally intended order, pretty please?
Because as soon as I get my hand on those DVDs, I intend to watch them in the right order, no matter what ;)

Sorry. not really related to "The snow job" and what? You brought Germany in in that episode? Nice :D Though I bet the dubbing will mess it up completely :(
I'm afraid anyway that a lot will get lost if it's picked up here... Sophie does a lot of language/dialect work, right? I bet that won't really come up in the dubbing. It never does. :(

@Rogers: "And yes, the final Act Five edit is a bit of a mess. When we do flashbacks we play fair, but the time frame we wound up with was ... funky."

Actually, sort of glad this came up. The traffic stop flashback bugged me lots. Cutting the original scene early is kosher. Flashing back and showing something else entirely happening, less so.

I might not have noticed if the uncertainty in the delivery of Nate's second "you're fishing, right" hadn't been such a nice touch the first time around. Regardless, the difference between "I failed to cotton to the scam" and "I didn't even have a chance because of a glitch in the Matrix" is enormous.

On the other hand, I think maybe I'm starting to understand the episode reordering thing a bit. It's playing out a bit weirdly, but I'm seeing the potential reasonability of letting the Fun Train get a full head of steam first. I'm not sure how I would have reacted to Snow Job if I weren't already sold on the characters.

I've been trying to sell some friends on the show, for whom this episode would be their first exposure outside my synopsis. I'm curious about their reactions, if they remembered to watch.

How long has Nate been single? With all this history with Sophie I can't but wonder what his status with the mother of his son was.

This is one of my favorite epis so far. It was believeable and emotional, and I truly felt disgust at what the contractors had done, and wanted them to PAY PAY PAY. Thank you for Sam Anderson! Love that man.

Since next week is the 12-step job (related to AA somehow?), I thought Nate's drinking problem was appropriately timed. Nate needs character... if its in a bottle, so be it. We like him a little creepy. Besides, only liquor would make a guy wear those hats.

Parker is a TOTAL CRACK UP and makes me laugh out loud each week. Elliot had a smart moment, thank you for that.

Ladypeyton said...

Yay Danny Strong!!! The greatness of a show is directly correlated to the numberr of Whedon alums show up over the course of a season.

I'm guessing that this episdeo was actually written second since we don't see the faintest hint of a ship between either Ford/Sophie or Hardison/Parker and Ford is just dealing with his drinking issue.

Great episodeas usual! I just wish they were airing in the order they were written.

Ladypeyton said...

Gah! That should have said "guessed last night while watching".

Denita said...

To everyone who mentioned Nate's drinking: even with the episodes being shown out of order, there are still subtle hints of a drinking problem. If you go back and re-watch the episodes, you'll see Nate getting looks from Sophie a few times and from Eliot at least once in relation to him drinking. Granted, it would be more obvious had "The Snow Job" within the first few episodes but the hints are still there.

I loved last night's episode. It's my favorite so far. Loved the dynamic of the guest stars and the intensity of the scene where Eliot confronted Nate about the drinking.

I was wondering why was Eliot's wink to Sam Anderson's character at the end of the show cut out?

And so the seams split in the fabric of Leverage viewers, while i agree with others that i prefer the team to con the mark and not the producers conning us, i also feel this was a big tumble from last weeks funtrainy heights - an unwelcome breeze of reality what with Nates drinking and the team being all unteamy and negative vibing.

I also can't quite tune my appreciateometer to Danny Strongs wavelength, never thought he was particularly good as an actor, maybe its because he reminds me of a Hobbit.

However though, while I've noticed the people at Television without Pithy have had nothing but problems with Nates and Sophies compatibility dance, that was never an annoyance for me. Except this time. Perhaps a bit too much of the Wife.

Personally I'm hoping he'll drop the drinks and pickup the lollipops and for season 2 and henceforth will be heard chomping "Who loves ya, baby?

Hee!

How coincidental was it that Sam Anderson and Danny Strong ended up in an ep together? Is there an explicit Whedon connection or is it just Hollywood serendipity?

Wow. Unlike everyone, i could kinda work witht eh sudden Nate drinking.I've seen people with drinking problems only really drink super heavy after something reminds them of what made them start. So Nate could have easily been sly!drinking, but the whole thing with his son and theScots jsut brought it all back up.

As for the three year things, was Sophie talking about before Nate's son died?

Also Parker cracks my sh..shiz up. And the whole rock paper sizzors battle lieraly had me and my dad battleing over who would do the dishes.(BTW I totally won) Go KANE

I still don't get how or why ppl in the movie/tvshow biz seem to think this is irrelevant or whatever, but PLEASE OH PLEASE, if you show somebody from Germany, allegedly speaking German, why does it have to be somebody who can't and who very obviously doesn't!

Would it really cost too much to find somebody for the job who could actually deliver that ONE fucking line right? And also maybe correct it from the writing, where it was obviously fucked up?

Things like that drive me up the wall, and I mean I _do_ totally love the show.

But I had to pause the file right there to come here and post this *fumes*

Nate is quickly becoming a character I love to hate. I know he's all "the good guy" and everything, but he annoys the crap out of me. I so wish Sophie didn't stop Eliot from hitting him, that would have made my day.

I was actually YELLING at the TV screen when he was drinking and driving. I mean hey, I get being a drunken mess, some of us have been there before, but I dunno... I never personally drove drunk. It's something I consider one of the stupidest things to do.

Parker running out being all "WHAT IS HE DOING?!" and having to be physically picked up and dragged away by Eliot was ace. It had me laughing so hard. By the way, I looked at a screenshot of that and it totally looked like crazy Parker in a metal hospital being dragged off by an orderly. LOL!

The rock, paper, scissors moment was great for me, only because I put that in a fanfiction a couple weeks back. I was like YES I WIN! xD rofl.

Sophie trying to teach Parker to act... too funny. I also noticed Sophie said "like when your father died". Now it was never mentioned that Parker's father was dead, or really anything that had to do with her birth parents, so was Sophie just guessing, or is it to be implied that Parker confided some of her past in Sophie? Either way, Parker laughing about it was great.

Can't wait for next weeks episode :]

This was the first episode where the sequence really got to me. I would have much rather seen this episode a whole bunch of weeks ago.

Hopefully it's all sorted out on the DVD, which we'll absolutely be getting.

I was just curious to see if these are being aired in the order intended. The reason I ask is while I enjoy each episode individually it seems like the characters kind of jump around a bit(Nate's drinking in previous epis wasn't an obvious problem to me except for the bar scene in the pilot). That and the characters seem to jump around with respect to their relationships. Or is that a product of having 13 episodes and staggered shooting? Thanks.

We don't do it because we don't care. Because we hate our craft and our life and our audience.

Oh, wait, no, sorry, I meant to say, welcome to weekly television production, where we get five different versions of the "correct" way to say the line from various actors, all of whom claim "Native speaker" on their resume. End of day, go for the funniest read.

This one was #2 in the shooting cycle, and we hadn't quite cracked how to handle the various languages in the show. By #4 we'd found a pipeline for linguistic consulting, got our Mandarin right in TWO HORSE, and learned our lesson and got solid Russian and Serb speakers for THE STORK JOB.

crikey. And here I thought that sth like that happens often enough in that town of yours that there'd be a streamlined process for "get this line, plus correct pronounciation, in language X" ..

But admittedly, in the case of TV-shows the budgets are lower and the timescales shorter and whatnot.

Nevertheless, it was extremely jarring, most of all because not only was the pronounciation off, she also used words that wouldn't be used, the grammar was also totally wrong and .. agh, well anyway. Still looking forward to the next episode. eztv delivers quickly week after week, so this Austrian is happy.

Oh, btw, massive geek-thing going on: typing this on a DasKeyboard, loving it.

I've had several people say to me they though Nate's drinking came out of nowhere and I really don't know why. In every episode, we've seen him drinking and he's never drinking coffee or something non-alcoholic.

I really liked this episode, I liked the con and enjoyed seeing the marks get their comeuppance. If I have any complaints at all, it'd be that we don't see how or why, exactly, everyone stays with Nate (Sophie excepted). Eliott had good reason to walk out, so did Parker yet they didn't. Will that get explored at some point? I know we've had eps saying "we're more than a team" but I don't really think it's been established WHY they would feel that, when they're such loners as a rule.

I'm still loving this series and I'm sad that we only have 13 eps. Totally keeping my fingers crossed for a larger season 2.

I'd like to second that, especially in light of the ending to The Snow Job and how they were all smiling. I found that a bit jarring after the group questioning Nathan's drinking and methods.

Especially Hardison. Nate called him a screw-up throughout the Mile High Job and Sophie blamed him for....not restraining Nate?! I know Alec has bought into "the more than a team" philosophy but he does a lot of work and rarely gets any acknowledgement. Would be nice if he gets his due.

Darkrose said...

I love this show. I've watched all of the first 8 episodes at least twice. After watching a show for five years because of what it could have been, and seeing an ensemble show become "the actor we like and a bunch of other people", watching a show where all of the members of the team get airtime is wonderful.

I'd also like to thank you for "Diversity: You're Doing It Right". There's Hardison, of course, who's a stereotypical geek, not a stereotypical black guy, but I'm even happier to see that he's not the only non-white actor we ever see. That Other Show shot an episode on location in Vegas, and from watching that ep, you'd have come away with the impression that everyone in Las Vegas is white. Compared to "The Snow Job", where the victim's family looked like mine...it was very, very cool.

One thing, though...I know it's just a TV show and I should really just relax, but there are a couple of things that are straining my ability to suspend disbelief. It was nice to see Jonathan Frakes notice Nate talking to himself, but it made me wonder why more people don't notice. The bit in "Mile-High Job" where Alec ducks behind the cabinet door, still talking struck me as particularly silly.

The other thing I'm wondering is how the team's clients find them. Given that they work for law-abiding people who got screwed over, it doesn't seem like it would be easy for them to find a bunch of thieves. In "Snow Job", the victim apparently uses his one phone call to get in touch with Nate--how did he get their number?

Those are the only things that bug me so far. Mostly, I'm looking forward to next week.

Unknown said...

The other thing I'm wondering is how the team's clients find them.

Probably like the A-Team .. Maybe you should do a scene where Nate hides on a filmset as a Monster from the Sea.

Or where he dresses as some ancient chinese dude.

Unknown said...

I thought Hardison was supposed to find the worthy people but it does appear people are locating them. Nate found the client in Homecoming, Elliot's gf was the client in Two Horse, and Sophie's friend needed help in Wedding. Don't know about others.

Kai Tave said...

Especially Hardison. Nate called him a screw-up throughout the Mile High Job[...]

Well, to be fair, Hardison was screwing around during that episode. He was away from the comms during the infiltration of the building, tried to cover it up with a lame excuse, decided to snoop around Nate's computer, spent all night playing World of Warcraft...not that he didn't end up saving everybody in the end, but Nate was far from out of line that day.

Unknown said...

When will we find out why Nate and the team keep seeing the words "Bad Wolf" everywhere they go?

Unknown said...

Don't get me wrong, Hardison messed up and deserved some chewing out. Just thought Nate went overboard. And considering his actions on the last Job, he has little room to judge.

Unknown said...

Plus, Nate said Hardison had screwed up before. We haven't seen any evidence of prior bad acts. Unless the shows being shown out of order means we have not seen the mess ups. Hardison has been a rock

Another Austrian here who couldn't understand what the 'German' girl was supposed to be saying, so thank you for clearing up how that happened.

I found it funny how Sophie's accent sounded more Austrian than German, but then again she pretended to be someone from Bavaria, so it was fitting. Add the Swiss chocolate on Eliot's temporary desk and you managed to pack all of the German speaking countries into one episode ;-)

Too bad it will all be lost in translation and bad dubbing once the show comes to our screens in an estimated 4 years....

I also laughed my ass off when I read the name 'Schwesterkrank'. I don't know if it was another translation gone wrong (instead of Krankenschwester), but it was funny and that's what counts.

I'm really looking forward to the new episodes every week - I'm really curious how the characters will evolve - so thank you for all the hard work.

I've noticed the weird character continuity things other people have posted about, but it looks like plenty of folks have mentioned those, so I would just like to say:

Ditto Darkrose's comment about diversity on your show. THANK you for that.

And thank you for Hardison. He's one of my favorite characters on any show ever. And the whole bunch of them: fantastic. They're a great mix of character types who always surprise me by not being flat stereotypes. And Parker: I was prepared to cringe a lot, because crazy characters, especially female ones, can be so embarrassingly bad. But the way she's written and especially the way she's portrayed, I completely love her.

I also love the sense of humor on the show. I love how the flashbacks to really intense dramatic events often have something -- a detail or present-day context -- that cracks me up.

And also, I just love your show in general. There are some shows that I watch occasionally, when I'm in the mood, such as Criminal Minds, NCIS, The Mentalist, a few others; whereas there are exactly two I can't miss, and Leverage is one of them.

FWIW, my husband and my son both love it, too. (And I heard my son advertising it to a friend with: "It's really awesome because they're bad guys who help people. And there's this really smart guy who likes Star Wars and this guy who does awesome fights and this girl who's crazy but really cool. And also people don't die on it!" :P)

So, thanks for your awesome show!

We're enjoying the hell out of Leverage here. I'll watch it when it airs on Tuesday night, and then actually sit and watch it again if I happen to catch it on Saturday afternoon. It's clever, the characters are appealing, and it's fun.

Not to mention I love the quickie scenes and crazy flashbacks that get thrown in. Eliot's are some of the best.

Add me to the list of folks who, if the shows should be in the order you intended on the DVD -- or at least give us a cheat sheet as to which order to watch in. I don't think the switch in order has lessened my enjoyment, but it's got me curious about how the character development will play out.

FWIW, I actually liked Nate's drinking showing up big in the middle of the season. I would have found it very unrealistic for him to start off with a big problem and gradually get all better with each episode. I thought it had a lot more impact coming when it did than if it would have come when it was supposed to. I think you ought to throw one big glitch like that in at least once every season. Cannot freaking wait for every episode and will often watch it the second time it airs right after Bones.

Loved this episode; have loved all of them.

Agree with many comments that Nate's drinking does not come out of context; we've seen in other episodes, and with the discussion about his son he has a flashback. This drives him to the point.

Sophie (on seeing Nate swallowing a pill (aspirin?)): Are you drunk?
Nate: Technically, no. I was drunk a couple of hours ago. Now I'm just hung over.

Oh, yeah. Been there; done that.

Also agree that a "cheat sheet" in the DVDs would be nice.

And SAAAAYYY! Congrats on the announcement of the new season! I am SOOO looking forward to it!
