Dude, I didn't realize you were the guy writing Blue Beetle. It's a good book.
If you wouldn't mind, could I get your view on the full script vs. Marvel method of comic book writing? Obviously, you can write a good comic either way...but I sometimes think that full script allows the writer to get to caught up in the technical details of how the story is told. For example, unless you've got a very specific visual sequence that's essential to the story...I'm not sure writers really need to concern themselves with how many panels are on every page.
Full script seems to lead or allow writers to treat comic books like they were movie storyboards, where each panel is the equivalent to a specific camera shot. In my opinion, that's a limiting approach to the medium that ignores or shuts out a lot of its storytelling potential.

This is very, very cool. This is also, dare I say, my favorite issue of Blue Beetle ever, and I mean ever-ever unto ages upon ages. And pg. 7 is beyond awesome.

There's also a method that Steven Grant uses, which describes the page action, with full dialogue, but no panel count. Goes something like:
As Lloyd turns his back on Heller to drop some coins into the Coke machine, Heller
begrudgingly looks up at him. Heller's smile is genuine enough, but there's a level
of fatigue and faint annoyance keeping it from being too extreme.
*character dialogue*
Lloyd is walking out of the room, drinking the Coke, but Heller is up out of his
chair, discarding his cards on the table without a thought, almost knocking chair
and table over in his astonishment and urgency.

Speaking of Blue Beetle, how long is your hiatus from writing it going to be? Or are you off it altogether now, what with showrunning Leverage and all.

That sounds like a nice middle ground, giving the writer more control over the artwork without getting caught up in the whole "Look, I'm just like a movie director!" pretension.

I don't think it is possible to write a book like say, Watchmen using the marvel method. Personally, I feel better when I know the writer actually knows what he's doing.

How many books are there "like" WATCHMEN? I think a lot of writers need to understand that they're NOT going to write anything like WATCHMEN (and most of the time, they shouldn't even be trying to). If you're writing something of that complexity, then full-script is obviously the way to go. But 90+% of comic books don't even approach half that complexity, which makes full-script more of a pretension than a necessity to my mind.

Mike, that you're not writing Watchmen isn't a very good reason to abandon full script. If you know and trust your artist, a writer can be looser with the staging, but if you haven't worked with the person before, full script gets across the effects you're looking for, and ensures that the end result will be at least in the same ballpark as the comic the writer had in mind.
Also, I really hate it when people throw around "pretentious" as a pejorative.
