To All My Conservative Friends ...

... who for years nurtured a loathing of the Clintons I found both unnatural and inexplicable:

Oooooooooooooh.

Yeah. So ... yeah.

As you were.

Yeah, I know the feeling too.
I'm still not vote for McCain though.
At least none of Hillary's supporters seem to think that bombing Iran will bring Jesus back.

I meant voting.
I really need to work on my proofreading.

Yeah, this is a really weird experience for me, too. I have extremely fond memories of the Clinton administration, memories that have only gained in power given the stark contrast between the professionalism and effectiveness of the Clinton administration and the bizzare combination of malevolence and incompetence that the Bush Jr. administration brings to the table.

So watching Hillary Clinton increasingly show every sign of being willing to destroy any Democrat's chance in the general just so long as she can be the nominee is very strange. I'll still vote for her in the general over McSame, but, Goddess, she's making it hard.

Right there with you, John.

I have a friend with whom I swap political talk alongside historical re-creation and fiber arts discussions. I defended the Clintons to her time and again.

And now, I just can't, anymore. To see the train wreak Hillary's made of her campaign, and her attempts to drag Obama down along with her? It sickens and saddens me.

This was a once-in-a-lifetime Presidential run. And it's turned into farce. At best.

If she gets the nomination, I'm staying home on election day.

Unless the polls say it's really close against McCain, which I doubt.

So that makes my commitment to inaction meaningless, but at least I can say I didn't vote for her.

Just got back from a big military exercise in Korea, many of the guys I was working with seemed to have some excitement about the race as long as they could vote for Obama. Not a single one said they would vote for Clinton, which I think can be expanded to all quasi-conservative apolitical types. She somehow steals the nomination and it's four more years of smash and grab incompetence.

So what? You'd vote for a retarded weasel if it had a 'D' next to it's name. Hillary knows it. Obama knows it. Your party elites know it. Fuck, everyone knows you have no spine.

The hypocrisy
The use everything to win the next 'big' state.
The double standards of what to do with campaign advisors.
The backward thinking of Blue state/Battleground state.
The writing off of huge swaths of new and old party faithful.
The hubris of setting some intangible level of Commander in Chief-ness that when attained only rates a VP slot?
Clinton is my Senator and I am ashamed of my vote to put her in that office. I will not make the same mistake again.

Um. I would say that your conservative friends were not against the Clintons because of her willingness to stoke racial tensions to win a nomination, nor for her nonsensical claims about how winning states of a certain shape and flavor is what's important, as opposed to numbers of delegates.

It's fine to not like what she is doing. Don't see how that translates to an apology to the whole "Clintons are drug-running rapist murderers!" crowd.

Once you're convinced that a retarded weasel would do less to f*ck up the country than the critter with an 'R' next to its name, it's not a tough decision.

For one charming example, the weasel isn't going to have Sam Brownback tell him who to appoint to the Supreme Court.

I spent the 90s hating Clinton's guts, but nowadays I often find myself wondering how bad he could have been to make me feel that way. Then something reminds me.

NBarnes said...

As far as amoral opportunists go, Clinton is pretty small water compared to the folks with R next to their names. But she sure doesn't make me proud to have defended her and her husband for so long.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I'm edging pretty close to the decision that, no matter who wins the Democratic nomination, I'm voting for Obama, even if I have to write his name in. I'm liking Hillary and her naked ambition less and less as this race continues, and I really, REALLY don't want to vote for McCain instead...

If you live in a swing state, please resist the temptation. Even a retarded weasel is right twice a day.

Not that the plan will ever, you know, happen.

And maybe she can get us a double dip on welfare reform while she's in office.  That would be *awesome*.  Stupid poor people!

I think the contrast between how we remember the Clintons and how we see them now comes down to:

1) In the 1990's, as sleazy as the Clintons were, their conservative enemies were foaming at the mouth. Sleaze always looks better than rabies by comparison.

2) The Clintons were kept on some semblance of a leash by a determined opposition in Congress. Fewer excesses for us to be upset about.

3) It was a time of prosperity and exciting new technology. The Clintons didn't have much to do with that, but they didn't screw it up. So we look back fondly on that era and they get some reflected glory.

4) Right now, in the W era, even Nixon looks pretty good by comparison. So of course we look back fondly on the Clinton era.

I hate to play the old curmudgeonly fart here, but as my psychiatrist wife says, everybody's got to be something.

I love the assumption that, were the tables turned, and our new Christ, Obama, were not leading in delegates, he would remain pure and sacrifice his ambition for the good of his party and the country.

We're talking politicians here folks. Somehow, Democrats seem enamored of this romantic notion of statesmen. I will admit that the behavioral bar has been lowered throughout the last 200 years (after all, we're wistfully thinking of the Nixon presidency), but even a cursory knowledge of the election of 1800 reveals that these men (they were all men in those days) were not saints. Ah yes, that statesman, Aaron Burr.

Wanting to be President of the United States, and considering yourself to be qualified to be so requires a certain heightened degree of...um...what's the word?...well, megalomania comes to mind...but for lack of a better word, let's settle on self-confidence. One has to consider oneself the best candidate for the job, which, in this case, is a rather important one.

Do tell, how many of you budding writers, were you to know that you were one of three candidates to "get the job," wouldn't use every trick, fair or unfair, in the book to get it, and rationalize your way into considering those tactics as necessary--it's a dog-eat-dog world, after all. And how many wouldn't consider the person who failed to use those tricks, and perhaps therefore didn't get the job, to be a fool, a loser, assuming you would consider your competition at all.

You would use everything to your advantage, yet you expect the potential "leader of the free world" not to, 'cause of course the world is much less cut-throat than Hollywood.

Ah yes, remind me how much we all hate ambition, endemic only to the Clintons.

So, I suppose I could speculate that, were Obama trailing Clinton, that he'd fling filth at least equal to anything Clinton's campaign has done, and pull gutter-stunts at least equal to anything Clinton's campaign has done. Because, you know, politicians.

But since that hasn't happened, I don't spend much time thinking about it, much less trying to build it into some sort of apologia. I prefer to confine myself to facts. If one wishes to conflate that with blind support for Obama, or willful blindness to his overweening, obvious-for-all-to-see megalomania, they're welcome to. On their own time.

map106 said...

You can speculate anything you want. What you are assuming, however, with your facts in hand, is that, were the situation the reverse, Obama would act in a manner you consider honorable. He might very well do so. We'll never know, however, because he hasn't been put in that position. I'm merely positing that your assumption is solely that; it is based on nothing.

Steve Peterson said...

Actually, we don't have to guess. Obama was trailing in national polls and everything else all through 2007. So you just need to trot out all that negative advertising he used then as evidence.

And then you claimed you were the patriots.

Map106 sez:We'll never know, however, because he hasn't been put in that position. I'm merely positing that your assumption is solely that; it is based on nothing.

What you seem to be conveniently ignoring, as summed up in your above paragraph sir, is that your assumption is also based on the exact same 'nothing'.

Sandman said...

More to the point, where do you get off talking to me about my assumptions, Map106? I was talking about speculation versus demonstrated, documented facts. The assumptions are yours and yours alone.

I don't always pick my words carefully, and don't always end up saying what I mean, but I think, in those two small paragraphs I'd written before, I didn't say a Goddamned thing about what I assumed anybody's behavior would be in hypothetical circumstances.

Ron Paul is the ONLY conservative left in the "race", whether the mainstream media lets you know or not. He IS still campaigning contrary to popular belief and the spoon-feeding corporate media. Rather than doing nothing or voting for the lesser of two evils, write Dr. Ron Paul in your ballot if you don't want the corporate elites telling you which candidate you should choose.
Check his message, voting record and campaign supporters out and you'll see he represents the majority of americans.

True, but you know, you reminded me — there were a lot of conservatives who thought the Clintons killed Vince Foster. Let's keep this in perspective here. The Democratic Party primary race is unusually heated and negative for a number of reasons, but the biggest is simply because it is closer and is going on longer than any in my lifetime. There are good arguments to make that this will ultimately hurt the candidate in the general, but it's not certain. (Yes, attacks coming from within the party might carry more weight. On the other hand, they will be old news and therefore may carry less weight. And they're keeping McCain from getting much press coverage these days. It's just too early to tell how this will balance out.)

Meanwhile, the Republicans managed to find a weaker candidate than Bush who might even manage to be a worse president than him (I can find links supporting this if someone wants), in an electoral environment less favorable to them than 2000 was. This is a new and unfamiliar experience for me, but try as I might, I just can't feel negative overall about the Democratic Party in the coming election.
