Veronica Mars

Thanks to BitTorrent (come get me, Glickman) I caught all of VM Season One. Surprisingly twisty, with many fine character moments executed well. The best pal's evolution from outcast to popular kid because of his excellence in sports was nicely handled, as were her Dad's romantic entanglements. I have to say, any UPN teen-detective show that has an overall mystery arc comprised of:

-- roofie date rape
-- murder of a teen best friend
-- small town politics
-- corporate espionage
-- drunken philandering mother
-- possible incest

and comes across as a smart crime thriller instead of a turgid soap is pretty damn impressive. Do grab the box set for at least a rental. Watch it before you watch your tivo'd season 2 eps. And you should be tivoing season 2. Why?

Any season that can be described as "Nancy Drew in The Sweet Hereafter" is, to borrow a phrase -- f'in metal.

I've talked that show up so much, I now have two friends I'm not even allowed to say her name around.

That was something of a season opener too, wasn't it? Too many theories... I have to work it out before I'm told this year.

You read Josh Friedman's blog today? You were mentioned.

  2. Curse UPN for putting this show opposite Lost this season! As much as I enjoy Lost, and as much hype as it's gotten, I came out of the 04-05 season considering VM the superior program; just as complex a mystery, and it actually has to make sense.

I have been singing this show's praises for months now. I pray it gets a good viewer base and a third season. It's got inverse X-Files/Lost syndrome -- the first couple episodes are cases of explosive logorrhea, with everysinglemysterythathaseverhappenedinthehistoryofmankind, but then everything gets tighter and wraps up smooth.

But (SPOILER) god only knows why she's gotten back together with Donut. I hope that doesn't last too long.

Haven't seen Mars. Haven't seen Lost.

Did see Threshold. Did see Invasion.

    Woe is me.

    (Same poster as above)

Ahem. Doesn't Whedon sometimes show up over here?

    I've seen Serenity.

I *lurved* Firefly (god damn Fox!).

All I can say is, I wish to hell I'd gotten to see the story told in the movie as, say, five seasons of episodes!

    Whedon, you really floored me.

  7. Veronica's definitely better than Lost, ok, I like it more, it's funnier, and funny's good.. Lost's too serious and has too many characters - I don't really care about any of them.

    LoVe!! :D

Mari, I agree about Lost. I tried to watch it, but with the exception of Hurley and Terry O'Quinn's character, I just couldn't get into any of them.

(SPOILER) Saw VM's ineffable Kristin Bell on an old episode of Deadwood recently, and couldn't even conceive of her character being a vicious thief until the end, because she was, for heaven's sake, Veronica Mars!

I love VM so much that it's heartbreaking to me that it doesn't get more viewers. It sucks that it's up against Lost, but I think a lot of people would like VM if they only gave it a chance.

Yeah, the drug test storyline in the premiere didn't work, but I am still optimistic that this season will be as twisty and turny and delicious as last year. As long as she doesn't stay with the donut too long. (Geez, does *anyone* want her to be with him? Nobody I know. Veronica + Loga 4ever, baby. No, I'm not 12, why do you ask?)

I also hope the cameos by Kevin Smith and Joss Whedon will pull in some new viewers. One can hope.
