Veronica Mars

Thanks to BitTorrent (come get me, Glickman) I caught all of VM Season One. Surprisingly twisty, with many fine character moments executed well. The best pal's evolution from outcast to popular kid because of his excellence in sports was nicely handled, as were her Dad's romantic entanglements. I have to say, any UPN teen-detective show that has an overall mystery arc comprised of:

-- roofie date rape
-- murder of a teen best friend
-- small town politics
-- corporate espionage
-- drunken philandering mother
-- possible incest

and comes across as a smart crime thriller instead of a turgid soap is pretty damn impressive. Do grab the box set for at least a rental. Watch it before you watch your tivo'd season 2 eps. And you should be tivoing season 2. Why?

Any season that can be described as "Nancy Drew in The Sweet Hereafter" is, to borrow a phrase -- f'in metal.

I've talked that show up so much, I now have two friends I'm not even allowed to say her name around.

That was something of a season opener too, wasn't it? Too many theories... I have to work it out before I'm told this year.

You read Josh Friedman's blog today? You were mentioned.

I've heard good things about this show. Haven't watched a single minute of it yet. Guess I'll have to now that you're raving about it too.

Curse UPN for putting this show opposite Lost this season! As much as I enjoy Lost, and as much hype as it's gotten, I came out of the 04-05 season considering VM the superior program; just as complex a mystery, and it actually has to make sense.

I have been singing this show's praises for months now. I pray it gets a good viewer base and a third season. It's got inverse X-Files/Lost syndrome -- the first couple episodes are cases of explosive logorrhea, with everysinglemysterythathaseverhappenedinthehistoryofmankind, but then everything gets tighter and wraps up smooth.

But (SPOILER) god only knows why she's gotten back together with Donut. I hope that doesn't last too long.

Word, my friend. This show, along with LOST and House (great twist on the procedural doctor show), was one of the few truly great programs last season. I initially tried watching an episode when LOST was on one of its many reruns, and was completely underwhelmed. It wasn't until I watched it from the beginning that I realized how truly impressive it was.

You're so right, jason. The blueberry scone on which I'm currently snacking has about as much screen presence as Donut. But you can't have things as they should be so early in a show's run, I suppose.

I can't wait for the Smith and Whedon cameos -- it's nice to see people with clout trying to call attention to something truly worthwhile.

John, no Kung-Fu love for Serenity?

Haven't seen Mars. Haven't seen Lost.

Did see Threshold. Did see Invasion.

Woe is me.

(Same poster as above)

Ahem. Doesn't Whedon sometimes show up over here?

I've seen Serenity.

I *lurved* Firefly (god damn Fox!).

All I can say is, I wish to hell I'd gotten to see the story told in the movie as, say, five seasons of episodes!

Whedon, you really floored me.

Veronica's definitely better than Lost, ok, I like it more, it's funnier, and funny's good.. Lost's too serious and has too many characters - I don't really care about any of them.

LoVe!! :D

I really like VM. I haven't gotten into lost, and it looks like most of the other shows out this season are not that great.

I watched the remake of Nightstalker... it about made blood shoot out of my eyes Kolchak should not be a thirtysomething dry character. He should be fun!

I miss a lot of shows because of night classes too, so I might be missing some gems.

As for VM. I like the dad character a lot (Strange to see a former comedic actor coming on strong as a father figure in a drama) "What? No premarital sex?" "Oh, you are really going to like these guys" Great exchange... made me laugh for a good minute.

Mari, I agree about Lost. I tried to watch it, but with the exception of Hurley and Terry O'Quinn's character, I just couldn't get into any of them.

(SPOILER) Saw VM's ineffable Kristin Bell on an old episode of Deadwood recently, and couldn't even conceive of her character being a vicious thief until the end, because she was, for heaven's sake, Veronica Mars!

The LOST v. VM argument has raged a bit since TPTB decided to place them against each other. Personally, I go back and forth with my opinion of the two. I liked VM's one season arc, which gave the first season a wonderful "complete" feeling, but I won't buy the DVDs. First of all, they're pretty bare-boned, and secondly, I don't feel like a lot of the episodes hold up well upon multiple viewings. The mysteries of the week are hit-and-miss (good call, John, that they should've skipped it for the opener).

I bought the LOST DVDs, however, not just because they are jam packed with goodness (though there isn't any commentary for the final 10 or so episodes!), but because I feel like they're going for something a bit more subtle and ambitious. Sure, they could fall flat on their faces (let's not restart the David Fury debate), but I definitely had no problem paying attention while watching all the episodes a second time.

Which is superior? Neither, I suppose. I love them both, and feel lucky that there's still quality TV in this post-Whedon environment.

This show is great, and so is Kristen Bell. She'll be around for a while...despite singing "Fame" at the Emmys. ugh

Veronica Mars and Arrested Development are the two best shows nobody is watching.

I love VM so much that it's heartbreaking to me that it doesn't get more viewers. It sucks that it's up against Lost, but I think a lot of people would like VM if they only gave it a chance.

Yeah, the drug test storyline in the premiere didn't work, but I am still optimistic that this season will be as twisty and turny and delicious as last year. As long as she doesn't stay with the donut too long. (Geez, does *anyone* want her to be with him? Nobody I know. Veronica + Loga 4ever, baby. No, I'm not 12, why do you ask?)

I also hope the cameos by Kevin Smith and Joss Whedon will pull in some new viewers. One can hope.

This won't work in reality, that is exactly what I consider.
