"No! Sleep! 'til Grimboooot!"

I just finished my second rewrite of my first draft, all done in eight weeks, and turned it in at 6 am so all could add tweaks before the weekend read. If any of you freaks think I'm answering questions or coming up with clever little talking points based on phone conversations with Tyrone instead of curling up with the Samurai Champloo boxed set, TIVO'd Battestar Galactica's and my lovely wife, you're stinking high.

In a nice bit of synchronicity, there's a theme in the movie about our technology and our relationships with it -- and today Boing Boing points us at Make, the website about rolling up your sleeves and getting your hands dirty with Hi-tech gadget-y goodness.

Samurai Champloo and Battlestar Galactic? You're a man after my own heart, John.

I don't have the Samurai Champloo DVDs yet but I'll get a lot of enjoyment out of my newly purchased Witch Hunter Robin collection. Yeah, this will be a nice weekend...

Well, prepare to be bombarded anyway, since Don said there were only four Autobots in the script he read on his board. It had to have been either a joke or a gross oversimplification (since it clashed with what you have said)but doubtless it will freak some people out.

So enjoy the peace while it lasts, because when you get back, it'll be a lot of "WAAAAHHH!! WHERES TRAILBREAKER?!?!?!?!?111" and such nonsense.

I got Samurai Champloo vol.1 from NetFlix, and I think I'm going to grab the rest of the episodes from a student... and I'm watching Galactica right now.

No more politics! All about robots and goofery. Much more agreeable topics.

Hmm, Don can occasionally be imprecise. Much like the first X-Men story boils down to Wolverine, Xavier, Jean and .. well, Scotty and Storm were kind of splitting screentime of one role, eh? but there were other non-brotherhood mutants about ... well, you get the idea,

It really does matter that we're seeing this as "first movie." Legolas and Gimli don't really explode into immense bad-assery until the second movie in LotR, for example, which informs some of the choices I made when looking at the roster.

Actually, I think LotR was informative as a template, while I was outlining. Much in the way it starts small, to establish a viewpoint as an access to an ever widening, ever-telescoping scope of adventure and world-building, I followed a similar pattern.

The big thing for Trans-fans to remember, I think, is that they're used to the idea of giant robots, and they want to see them all, ALL now, now, NOW. For me, I want to give full weight to the "Sweet, Jesus, thats a GIANT FRIKKINCOOL ROBOT!" fact most non-Transfans will have smacking them across the forehead the first time we hear that familiar noise ... Dwell in the wonder a bit, you know, so it's not only the Transfans having fun, but the casual movie-goer can get fully invested in the characters and story.

Of course, the board-hounds also draw incorrect conclusions from statements. Someone asked Don "Does Soundwave have an alt-form that's not a cassette player?" And he answered "yes." The kids immediately put in the known column that Soundwave was no longer a small electronic device. Well, what Don said was yes, Soundwave had another alt-form ...

So, just as a question to torment myself- is there any projected date for the final product? Or will I die of anticipation?

In all sincerity, thank you. Also, you have a pretty daunting task besides getting non-TF fans invested in TFs. You have to make some TF fans get invested in humans. Now, there's a herculean task.

Okay, so for sure Soundwave, Megatron, Starscream and Optimus Prime will be in the movie. No surprises there. You really can't tell the story of Transformers without them.

I loved the show as a kid but I'm cool with some changes being made to bring Transformers to a wider auidence. After all, it's not like the old show isn't out on DVD if I ever want to go back and enjoy the old days.

Though I will offer up a feeble hope of maybe seeing Devastator on the big screen someday. Man, do I love Devastator!

I asumed Don was kidding about there being only 4 Autobots rather than being imprecise.

I agree with this. I don't understand why so many fans want the movie to start on Cybertron. Unless its done in such a way that doesn't involve full exposure to the TF's it would completely ruin that first contact on earth.

Yeah, the trick is here not to make it LIKE the original but make it BETTER than the original.

Better for long term fans who want to see Transformers on the big screen and better for the general audience member.

From what Don's said, you've succeeded.

Nice one.

Awesome news. i predict souyndwave will be a microwave. he's still electronic, but now he can eject his minions while smacking someone's face when the door opens.

on another note, i'm glad to see you're working to strengthen the continuity(s) by treating in way, the comics and cartoon as a sort of passed-down tale, while you are presenting the real story. not like those (the real bad wolf story) things that just suck, but better.

i know i'm incoherent.

Hello, Mr. John Rogers. I think your blog is nice.

I hope the robots in your film are portrayed as real, living beings and not merely heartless technology. After the film is released, it is requested that you visit Transformerscon 2007 in Toronto (or an earlier edition if you wish) as a special guest.

I really hope they get the music right although it will be hard to top the score of Transformers the Movie. Frankly I am just glad they are making any live action movie at all. For me its better something then nothing. Although this concept should not be applied to comic book movies. Elektra and Catwoman gave me good eye candy but the sweetness was too short.

John,
Being a Transformers geek from way back, I have to admit to feeling somewhat prescient now that things are coming together. In the late '90s I used to imagine a live-action Transformers film. I used to imagine Steven Spielberg being attached. I used to fantasize that the creators would take a slow and measured approach and that they would use the 1984 character lineup. I also hoped that they would have some serious fun with science fiction, and attach a major budget. I dared not dream that all of these things would indeed be realized. Thank you for taking this project seriously. Fans always think they know exactly what they want. When it comes down to it, they need someone who knows what they're doing to package it for them. I see how frustruating it must be to give direct answers and have people still come up confused. Good to see you tking it in stride.
