Idiots Guide to Bit Torrent

all right, all right, I've been mucking around -- I can hardly write an essay on 4GM without trying iot out -- but if somebody wants to point me to a good intro/summary and save me a couple days of learning curve, it would be appreciated.

That wiki page is good, check the Newbie FAQ first.

But! Basically, all you need to know is:

1. Download a bittorrent client (from the first link above)

2. Go to torrentspy.com or torrentsearch.us (or search for torrent sites)

3. Find a file you want to download, and download it - this is a small file ending in .torrent

4. Double click the .torrent file - it launches your bittorrent client, and asks you where you want to save to

5. Wait. When you finish downloading, leave it running for the same amount of time, just to be polite (it's all about sharing the download love). Then click Finish.

6. If you're behind a firewall or router, open ports 6881 to 6889, forward them to the IP address your router has assigned to your machine (use ipconfig on PC to find that out, or network properties on a Mac)

That's more or less it. Email me if you get stuck or anything (address is on profile). Once you get used to the idea of downloading the .torrent file first, and then downloading the proper file after, it's a breeze. The only tricky part is which hard drive to buy when you fill up your current one with naked- er, I mean tv shows and things.

james and random put it well, but I thought i'd throw a couple good links to get .torrent files in here, because that's what it's all about, yo.
.

Hope this helps.

Same here, I've been trying to get my head around portforwarding and the link for ages I'm working on a G4 would some kind soul help me and the other blogger out with this as some torrents are taking forever to sort out.

I would like to download tiorrents but I'm afraid the posts here are so full of jargon they might as well be written in Portuguese. Please can someone just direct me to a site that tells you in plain English what to type, click, etc and how to make this file sharing thing work.
