What the...? Is that a person in a costume, or perhaps the most terrifying result of plastic surgery ever?

  3. Fascinating, fun,and beautifully executed!

This strikes me as a singularly Japanese concept---I wonder how the Western audiences will like the English-speaking version.

Do you think they'll keep the same samples, or go to well-known English-speaking actors/singers?

And what does Mr. Kane think about these electronic superstars?

  4. @zenkitty nope. CG image, CG voice.

  5. It's a projected 3D animation of a character named Hatsune Miku.

Basically, there's a software called Vocaloid which is a voice generator - you enter in the words and set the note values, along with certain preset 'tones' and the virtual singer performs the piece.

There are multiple different voice packs (male and female) available for the Vocaloid software, and they create a character for each voice pack. Hatsune Miku is the first Japanese voice package for the Vocaloid 2 software, and the most famous Vocaloid character.

Because she's so popular, they've been using augmented reality technology to hold these concerts where they play the program output and match it up with a 3D animated character animation.

Not all that different from the Gorillaz, when it comes down to it.

  7. In addition to the concert stuff, there are some pretty awesome fan-made music videos.

Black Rock Shooter (Hatsune Miku) - this one is so popular there's an original anime project and multiple collectible figures available

    Corruption Garden (Megurine Luka)

  8. Yeah. What Clarissa said. I had to go to Wikipedia to look up what this "singer in a box" was. I thought maybe it was a costume idea for Parker for Leverage! At any rate the Madonna-like gestures mixed with a Charleston throw back were highly entertaining! :)

    Ba dum bum.

  10. Clarissa: the bright "starburst" visible behind/through the character would be the rear projector, then?

And what do you mean by "3d" - "3d animation" techniques with countour shading, or two-viewpoint 3d with the audience wearing glasses?

  11. to JohnRogers: Uh... hate to break this to you, but she will not love you back. ;)

  12. @Sullivan -

Yeah, my understanding is that they use a clear (I believe glass) curved surface and rear-project the animation onto it. So that starburst may be the projector.

It's only "3D animation" techniques with shading, I haven't heard any mentions of the audience wearing 3D glasses. They may be waiting on that kind of 3D until they can reasonably do the stereoscopic (non-glasses) projection in a concert venue.

Also, for those wondering about possibilities in English - there are already English Vocaloid packs (several predating the Japanese) via Zero-G including Leon, Lola, Miriam, Prima, and Tonio. I hear Crypton is considering releasing an English version of Miku but I'm not sure whether it'll happen.

  13. Agh, stupid lack of editing comments. I meant autostereoscopic for the non-glasses 3D (I believe that's what the new Nintendo 3DS uses).

  14. Clarissa: the voice generation tech is the most impressive part, then - the image is just an animated short. Very very detailed, in that it can stand up to live viewing at that size, but it's not as if it's real-time CGI or anything.

The fact that live audiences are reacting this way to a character they *know* is animation is something. Pop music producers must be salivating - there will be no star lead singers to be paid.

I wonder how long before she's a guest on Letterman?

  15. Admit it - Hatsune is Hardison's next nemesis.

  16. And Parker will be jealous of her!

For yet another level of meta madness, try googling "hatsune miku" and "cosplay"

Not a show question, but what do you think about the BBC's take on Sherlock Holmes?

John, Just read book 2 of Willam Gibson's trilogy?

Idoru is also an urban chic store in Colorado Springs, CO.

    P.S. I (a)dor(e) (yo)u, too!

  22. Of course, you can't have a synthetic J-pop star without the Japanese doing some... interesting remixes.
