Guitar Friday: It Goes to 11

by M A N @roquesdoodle

I have to catch a plane to Calgary in a few hours. And after having just returned from C2E2 in Chicago a few days ago, I'm feeling a little bit like Spinal Tap backstage in Cleveland. So on that note, I give you the greatest guitar solo in the history of the world: Nigel Tufnel from the movie This is Spinal Tap.

For the three of you out there that haven't seen the film, do so this weekend. Yes, the music and fashion are dated, but its humor is timeless. Plus, for all my fellow ax-grinders out there, you'll enjoy seeing Nigel's army of guitars in the background. Les Pauls, Strats, guitars with infinite sustain, and, of course, the guitar that can neither be played, touched, nor even looked at.

And if you don't agree with me that the above solo is the best ever (seriously, he tunes the violin), then let us know in comments which solo turns your world upside down.

  1. It's quite a nice solo. But.

Joey Santiago of the Pixies epic guitar noise collage during "Vamos". Saw him do this live during the reunion tour and it was amazing. At one point he set the guitar on a stand with a sustained feedback and threw drumsticks at it to make great crashing reverberations. He also pulled out the amp plug and tapped it on his palm and on the body of the guitar, playing the feedback like a percussive instrument.

That was also the night I first realized I was getting old as walking out of the concert a few steps behind a pair of teenagers who complained about the solo because it was so noisy and dissonant. Ugh. Kids these days. No respect for their elders.

  2. Zappa's "My Guitar Wants To Kill Your Mama" solos -- there's a flamenco solo at 1'30'' and an electric solo 30 or 40 seconds from the end and they're both just brutal.

  3. Probably not your cuppa tea but Robert Fripp's performance on "The Zero of the Signified" from his 1980 LP "God Save the Queen/Under Heavy Manners" is 12:38 seconds of absolutely incredible precision guitar work. Even more amazing is that the whole thing was recorded in one take. Take 2 actually as the first take broke down. A bit mechanical & passionless for some but I'm far more impressed by that sort of playing as opposed to the usual Yngwie Malmsteen/Eddie VanHalen [strike]wankery[/strike] shredding...

The solo on "Can Blue Men Sing the Whites" by the Bonzo Dog Band. They bragged it was "the worst guitar solo ever recorded" but what did they know? Trust me, it kicks ass.

I saw deep purple in, I think, the same year spinal tap came out. Ritchie Blackmore smashed a black strat, breaking off the neck. He then picked up a Les Paul and proceeded to play the Les Paul with the broken strat's neck. I'm not sure how or if the pickups on the strat were still working but it was the craziest sound I've ever heard.
Also, I saw Molly Hatchett about 1985. they always had the "triple guitar attack" theme and they only had two of the original three. The original two were kind of old guys, with muttonchop sideburns and denim jackets, playing a Gibson Firebird and a strat. The third guy was apparently a new hire. He was one of the new breed. Wearing spandex, feathered, poofed-out hair and playing some kind of wild Jackson flying-v.
You could tell plainly that the old dudes despised him but the guy could really play. They were really trying to one-up each other and the solos were flying. Finally, young blood decided to lay down the trump card. He climbs on top of the PA stack and proceeds to rip off a two-handed hammer on solo ala Eddie and he's brilliant. He finishes with a back flip off the stack and does a perfect landing.

  10. Pavement. Rattled By The Rush. Holy moly. It was criminally redacted from the video and I couldn't find a great version on YouTube, but the album version on Wowie Zowie blows my mind every time. Elegance from chaos.

The music and fashion were already dated when the film was first released! Part of what made it so hilarious.

Here's another vote for Robert Fripp. Either the solo on Eno's "Baby's on Fire" or on Bowie's "Scary Monsters" are stellar examples of his angular brilliance.

Also, Adrian Belew's solo on Talking Head's "Born Under Punches".

Something more traditional: Joe Bonamassa's solo on the title track of "Blues Deluxe". At various points he channels Roy Buchanan, SRV, Albert King and Jimmy Page (at least). A pyrotechnician to be sure, but with the soul and grace you wouldn't expect from one so young.

  13. Anonymous, that wasn't "Can Blue Men Sing the Whites," it was "In the Canyons of Your Mind," one of Viv Stanshall's great Elvis parodies.

  17. I confess, my favorite guitar solos are in Moxy Fruvous's "Nuits de Reve."

It's not a particularly hard or shreddy song, but when they play it live, there's not one but TWO incredible solos.

Of course, they went on hiatus ten years ago, so that song only gets played live anymore in my head and heart. ::sniff::

Dr. Paisley: Thank you for the correction. That’s what I get for PWD (posting while drunk.)
Actually, both songs have great solos, but as the good Dr. pointed out the Bonzos bragged about Canyons of Your Mind containing the worst solo ever
