BRAVE & THE BOLD this Friday

Thanks to Comic Book Resources, found out that they're doing a storyline this Friday following the run on Blue Beetle I did with Giffen. Specifically, our villains, the Reach, are showing up. BB fights the Green Lanterns! The Challengers of the Unknown! Batman in a space-bat suit!

Meanwhile, in the actual comics, The Rainbow Ponies Lanterns continue their year-long all-title cross-over fight with a space zombie lord who rips out heroes' hearts.

  1. Omg pwnies?

I thought it was a little odd when I went to pick up my comics and my comic book chick gave me a ring. But I confess before God and those assembled that, while I've been dutiful in picking up my comics over the last year, I haven't read a blessed one.

I gotta fix that here soon. The pile's getting huge.

That sounds much more interesting than what is actually happening.

  4. Only thing I can say about the Blackest Night series is my son likes all the rings Santa brought him. Other than that, I know nothing about the series.

  5. Hm, well, the thing I think about Blackest Night is that it indulges the modern comics trend of stringing together "cool" moments with the barest of connective tissue (what I call Brad Meltzer Syndrome).

You WANT cool moments, but they shouldn't predominate; you want some contrast and some regular plot and characterization to make those moments pop.

I really wish that bit wasn't accurate. Especially the "all-title cross-over" part. I could just ignore it, then.

  7. To be fair, even at its worst (although I happen to like the multiple-color corps concept myself), most would admit that Blackest Night is still a far better execution of the Crossover than "Amazons Attack!". :)

Apropos of nothing, and entirely off-topic, I just noticed Devlin's star turn as the treacherous Ernie in (a mst3k'ed version of) the 1985 hit City Limits with James Earl Jones and Kim Cattrall. I guess it's pretty much been downhill ever since.

"Blackest Night" appears to be a storyline intended to achieve a specific goal first and tell a story second. The specific goal appears to be resurrecting damn near everyone killed off since "Crisis on Infinite Earths" in a single stroke, and I'm fine with that: most character deaths are short-sighted and they reduce the storytelling potential of the DC Universe.

As for the story being told in "Blackest Night", I could do without the Rainbow Brite Corps, but that's just me.

I've always thought a lot of this sentiment was generational in nature. Having never seen Rainbow Brite (or even Captain Planet), I don't have the emotional reaction like that; I just think of it as a cool idea.

    Hey Rogers,

If you have a minute, I'd be interested in your thoughts on the current FOX vs Time Warner Cable spat vis-a-vis 4GM. i.e. do you think FOX might be testing the water to see if they can bypass the cable cos and deliver content directly to the viewers (via the internet)? Or am I reading too much into this?

    Thanks - Mark

  12. So do you get any compensation when they use a character of yours like this? Even a free DVD of the episode or something?

Hey, dude, nothing was cooler than rockin' the Rainbow Brite big wheel in 1982. Which I did. I think it was the start of my career in awesomeness.

  14. I haven't really read the comics too much (I have been relying on people updating Wikipedia entries on it) but I sure as heck like all the new Lantern shirts. I have one of the Indigo/Compassion ones. I have to wonder who would wear the Orange/Avarice shirts, though. Super-hideous.

This is the first time I've seen the cartoon and, unfortunately, the first time I've heard what this iteration of Batman sounds like.

"Batman is thrusting in the direction of crime! Oh Yeah!"

Just watched the episode, and I can't say I was that impressed--BatB continues disappoint me with their BB episodes. The toon version of Jaime Reyes lacks all the quirks that make him interesting in your comic-book portrayal, and is just a generic teen superhero. (And, of course, Will Friedle is way to white for the role.)

Still, the second season of BatB seems to be shaping up okay. The Deathrace episode was fun, and last week's plastic man ep was amazing. Plus, with this week's challengers of the unknown teaser, we're starting to see some interesting continuity.

  18. From what I've heard, Blackest Night was originally conceived as a Green Lantern storyline, and it works the best if you read it like that: GL, GL Corps, and the Blackest Night mini itself. That's where the actual story is happening.

The rest of it -- again, as I've heard, the other editors and writers wanted in on the Cool, and the concept was pretty easy to expand. Some of the "coat-tail" stories are readable, but a lot of them are just Red Skies Crossovers, and a few are just incoherent messes. One or two are exceptional, but they still aren't where the real story is happening.

(By the same token, I thought of Secret Invasion as primarily an Avengers story. I mean, Skrulls, right?)
