Netflix Friday #5: RED ROCK WEST

Before he slammed onto the scene with The Last Seduction, director John Dahl gave us the surreal little thriller Red Rock West. Both are late entries in the 80's/90's neo-noir wave, but while Seduction has a lot going for it -- Linda Fiorentio's legs and a surprising villain turn by Bill Pullman -- I'd argue Red Rock is the more interesting film.

Seduction, after all, plays pretty straight by noir standards. And granted Red Rock begins cleanly enough: Nicolas Cage drifts into a small desert town and finds himself in a classic noir setup. Murder for hire, mistaken identities, you know the drill. But after that familiar opening refrain, Red Rock's story roams like a sax solo around a familiar standard melody. From murderous to openly comedic to David Lynch and back again ... I'm sure the Germans have a word for "quirky, yet evoking genuine dread". Assume I used it here.

The real thrill is watching J.T. Walsh. Dennis Hopper chews scenery and Cage, well, he's busy perfecting the genial loser persona that would keep him employed for a decade. Meanwhile Walsh is calmly, malevolently centering every scene he's in. He wields a ... dark gravity. The mistake casting directors made with him later was in playing him as venal, or mad. Walsh is best here and in, say, The Grifters, where he is obviously, terribly sane. His death just five years after this movie was a real loss.

It's odd to see this flick sitting in a pack of movies like The Grifters and Last Seduction and the criminally under-rated One False Move. But while I love all of those movies for their momentum, I enjoy Red Rock precisely for its refusal to take itself too seriously. To borrow a gaming term, it's a beer and pretzels noir. Perfect for a casual Sunday download, and streaming now -- until November 30th -- on Netflix.

  1. this is a fine, fun movie. Everyone I've ever shown it to has enjoyed it; at the same time, nobody has EVER heard of it before I show it to them. I caught this on HBO when it first came out and searched for every showing to watch it as often as I could. and you are correct about J.T. Walsh - he died before people really figured out what he could do so well.

  2. Some years ago, I ran front of house at a theatre where we showed films for three nights between two play runs. Usually when we filled in this way, my volunteer ushers (little old ladies to man) complained because 1) showing a movie wasn't proper theatre, & 2) contains violence and strong language throughout. Not this time: they loved this movie, even with all of the above, because it's got a great story, and it grips like a grippy thing, right from the start.

  3. I'm not sure how it fits in with your assessment of later Walsh, but I highly rate his turn in Breakdown, one of my all-time favourite road-terror movies.

Another favourite in that category, and - to tie this all together - directed by John Dahl, is Joy Ride, a nice bit of b-film awesomeness. With Steve Zahn, always a treat.

  4. Love this movie so much - I don't have it on DVD but I have both the VHS & Laserdisc somewhere. I've also got the UK quad from my days of frequenting Plymouth's only Art Cinema (aka the place that let me watch the 18 cert Pulp Fiction when I was only 14 and desperate)

As an added bonus to the film, one of the deputies is Ram from Tron, which is a kick for a teenager.

  5. Back in film school I had this one professor who got the wacky idea to teach "performance criticism" in a theory class - some bizarre idea that the best way to understand the films we studied was to act out scenes from them.

The entire thing was retarded from the start and since I was the only person in the class who was an actor I was the only one who had any fun with it, but I never so much fun as when my group got assigned scenes from Red Rock West. I got to play JT Walsh's part and it was hell on wheels.

As for One False Move, I'm not sure how underrated it is. I was at a mystery convention back in 96 or 97ish and at the panel discussion about film adaptations when asked what they thought the best recent noir film was, every single panelist said "One False Move" without a moment's hesitation. Plus, you know, 100 on RT.

Criminally under-known in the wider public consciousness, perhaps, but to those on this side of the fence it's certainly held in high esteem.

Oh, I loves me some Red Rock West, but Dahl's Kill Me Again (with then-couple Val & Joanne Whaley-Kilmer) tops it in my book. Whaley is sexy & tres fatale, Kilmer is a great noir protagonist (a down-on-his-luck detective), and Michael Madsen is just downright evil. A bit more traditional than RRW in terms of noir, but superbly crafted.

Reminds me of U Turn, but Ebert says that borrowed it's plot from RRW.
Good: Jlo was hot, and Billy Bob was almost unrecognizable.
Bad: Why didn't he just...oh well, the movie would have ended early if he did.

Not to mention this is probably the highlight of Lara Flynn Boyles career, back when she was HOT (rather than her current "on the way to well preserved" look now).

  11. Red Rock West is one of my favorite movies. It's one of those 'Guy Has A Really Bad Day' movies that just works on so many levels. Too many people aren't aware of this movie. It's fun, funny, and dark. Good stuff.

  12. I pretty much loved J.T. Walsh in everything I ever saw him in. And I thought he was, far and away, the best thing in "A Few Good Men". Nice to see him getting his props in your blog.

Mmmm, Last Seduction. Yes, Linda Fiorentino's legs, but also her totally awesome performance, which I'd argue was even better than her legs. That part also rocked.

I'll have to check out Red Rock West.
