They just announced that there's a seperate group for girls, though, with a really frou-frou name, which makes me cranky. I WANNA BE A LOOKOUT, DAMNIT! I WANNA DIE IN THE WOODS (but not today. Or any time soon...)
The Daughters of the Eyrewood name makes me vaguely sad, because it's always about girls' relation to something else. I might be cranky this week.
Also, I suspect the fix will be in among PA's fanbase, since this is up against two other comics for continuation... one of which is the Jim Darkmagic comic. That's like giving us two bags of nice clothes and one bag of adorable kittens and telling us we have to throw two bags out. The fans have been sensitized to the Darkmagic magic by prior exposure.
Well, they did say that the "Daughters of" name was a suggestion from someone on the forums. Who's to say that someone couldn't come along and suggest a better name?
Personally, considering the massive reaction to this, I suspect that "Lookouts" already has this vote sewn up. Even "Gabe" has already said that he's really eager to draw more about these kids. Yes, Jim Darkmagic is popular, but unless the next two entries (Automata and the Darkmagic piece) are absolutely mindblowing, I'd bet money that Lookouts will win this.
a) I don't think the voted down projects are gonna die forever. I've heard their podcasts; it takes about 45 minutes for them to finalize a strip idea plus maybe 3-4 hours for Gabe to draw it. 3x/week. They've got spare time. They spend 50+ hours every week playing video games.
b) Automata could be Victorian steampunk like the video game. That could get some support. But I still think the Baby Rangers are gonna landslide this thing. Jimmy D requires the rest of Acquisitions, Inc. to do his thang. He can't carry a book alone. (I hope I'm proven wrong.)
This is insane. It's like, with one comic, they've just invented the con equivalent of boy scouts.
I mean, literally, for twenty years parents are going to be showing up to Emerald City and San Diego with their five-year-olds dressed up in capes and singing, "What men must know a boy must learn."
I wish I could hate these guys for being so awesome. But I can't. Because they're too awesome.
If you think you hate them now (and I say that with a similar love and respect for them), check out the podcast about this strip. In twenty minutes, they set down a very recognizable rough of this strip. It's equally banal and inspirational: "I think we should..." "Well we could..." "But what about... " "Then that means we..." "OK, so we just have to do this." "Yep."

Their podcasts remind me of the Battlestar writers' room podcasts. The discussions sound almost coldly mechanical at first, the way they try to hit certain points and evoke specific feelings. But then you see the result and it's art.
automata is...well...it scratches all the itches I have about Noir right fucking there.
I'm...not as enthused about the scouts as others are, and that makes me sad.
Jim darkmagic is every character i was ashamed to create and every character i've ever hatted played. He's the distilled principle that pimp daddy E and his hoes (elminster and his special fuckbuddies, including his 'god') could only dream of coming close to matching.
Though I fear we are in for far more marching music in the future.
I'd also be totally awesome if men defended the road, and women hunted the monsters. What better bait than a basket of goodies and a harmless girl in a red cloak..
