LEVERAGE: The Second David Job

You know what I love about LA? Very few other cities, you can be walking down the street and see a naked meth-head driving a black muscle car.

The most important question, of course -- where does he keep his keys?

Right, I've been working on the season 2 premiere, so I've been tardy. I'll do my best to catch up.

Questions from "The 12 Step Job":

Rebecca: Although we've talked much about episodes being aired out of order, I don't think I've ever seen the explanation of WHY that was done. Is it always a clearance issue, or sometimes something else...like, what, for instance?

Well, the network often has a different idea, based on their knowledge of their audience, for what episodes will most effectively hook viewers. Sometimes it's tone -- they wanted "The Wedding Job" to go later, as it's an off-speed ep. Sometimes it's audience-building -- they felt "The Two Horse Job" was a more "typical" episode, and helped getting new viewers introduced to the style and content of the show, so it was moved earlier in the run. Considering our success, I'm not going to argue with TNT's judgment.

The intended air order, which should be the DVD order --

1.) The Nigerian Job
2.) The Homecoming Job
3.) The Wedding Job
4.) The Snow Job
5.) The Mile High Job
6.) The Miracle Job
7.) The Two Horse Job
8.) The Bank Shot Job
9.) The Stork Job
10.) The Juror #6 Job
11.) The 12 Step Job
12.) The First David Job
13.) The Second David Job

R.A. Porter (and others): Speaking of clearance issues...I've been trying for the life of me to figure out this song that Jack Hurley's grunting over in the opening. It sounds like Shane MacGowan to me, but it's not a Pogues song I know. I can't get a very clear listen to the lyrics and can only grab a few snippets, but when I searched based on those I came up empty.

Berg answered this in the Comments: "Since everyone and their mother keeps asking about the song from 12-Step, thought I'd chime in. Although I'm sure this info will appear in a future blog post by Rogers. In the script, Chris Downey and I indicated our desire for a Pogues-slash-Flogging Molly type tune. Because purchasing source music (prerecorded songs from established artists) isn't in our budget, we left the task in the very capable hands of our talented composer Joe LoDuca. "Can't Go Home Again" is the song he created for us. At the moment, it's not available anywhere. Will let you know if/when that changes."

Oh, and R.A. your review of The First David Job hit the character nail on the head. Nicely done.

Becky: Do the actors ever get to ad lib any of what they say or is all of that in the script?

They usually do one where it's just the script, and then play a bit. Many of my favorite bits in the show are actor improvs.

Andrew Timson: Funny as the last line was… it scares me that Nate is that clueless, if he truly was going to go get a drink. How did he rationalize the fact that he had to detox? And when he gets himself killed, who's going to run the joint? Sophie can probably handle it, I guess, but putting any of the others in the center seat is asking for disaster.

Oddly, addicts -- and Nate has several addictions -- are very good art rationalization.

Leah: Question -- is there going to be a Leverage presence at ComicCon? You have been attracting Fans (with a capital F)

I'm all for it. We'll see.

Save-vs-DM: This is probably a very geeky question, but have you actually made character sheets for the main crew, using whatever system you favor? (I know that I've done it using Spirit of the Century) I know that you mentioned that all the characters have Thief 101 skills, but in your mind do you actually prevent them from doing something because "it's not on the character sheet"?

Seriously, e-mail the SoC character builds to the kfmonkey@gmail.com account. I want to see those. SoC is really frustrating to me, actually. A lot of great stuff, but as soon as you ge tinto tagging aspects of the setting, it all goes to mush for me. A simple system that they overcomplicate a bit in the rules book. FWIW, I'd go True20 or Savage Worlds for a Leverage game.

Anonymous: just a quick question... Are all of the original cast members going to still be on board for season 2? Hate when a great show goes on but without one of my favorite actors...

Everybody's back.

Jill: One question - I know that this was the last ep written, so perhaps this will be straightened out in later (aired) episodes, but where did Hardison learn to fight? Last I saw in "Miracle," he was freaked out at the very thought of violence. Now he's an action hero?

This blows by super-fast, but if you watch Hardison fight, he gets punched early, and after that he's mainly tying the guy up with his longer reach, kind of wrestle-grappling. Aldis is very careful about making sure he's still awkward in a physical confrontation.

That said, Eliot's probably giving him some pointers.

Rob: Props, arguably mad in nature, to whoever came up with taking the Goddamned Obligatory Explosively-Propelled Flying Tire and making it relevant.

It's not like I don't KNOW TV Tropes. We read it too. We're actually stealing from an episode of Lupin 3 there...

David: Could you please write a couple sentences (or maybe even a whole post!) about taking and implementing notes from the network and how you have dealt with that through the run of the first season. What do you fight? What do you take? As an aspiring writer, taking feedback is always hard because you're not ever sure which differing opinion to trust or whether to listen to yourself. Any tips on how to weed out good vs. bad feedback and how NOT to be defensive/argumentative when getting feedback? Love to hear your knowledgeable opinion/approach.

Will do a post on this this week.

From "The Juror #6 Job":

Darkrose: That's actually one of the few things about Alec that rings geekily false to me. If he uses standard model of anything, it would be a Toshiba, since they're physically damn near indestructable. Far more likely is that he built his own and has it set up to triple-boot Linux, Hackintosh, and the Windows 7 Beta. (Vista? Please!)

Actually, our friendly hackers tell us that now they're using $300 netbooks running Linux, because they can be dumped at a moment's notice with no worry about the money being tossed.

marag: Did Parker actually have to convince someone or persaude the jury to vote the right way? Alec's speech was great, of course, but it just seemed that learning how to persuade someone was the missing thing at the end to tie up Parker's character arc in the episode.

Yes, she did have to convince the jury, to close it up, but that scene went away in the cutting of the script for time. She had the Peggy tag, so it seemed like we didn't need both.

Zifnab: I'm honestly wondering when we'll start seeing recurring villains or multi-episode plot arcs.

Rarely, if ever.

Carolyn: One dimension of the show which I had a hard time explaining in advance is WHY these (now independently wealthy) people would continue to do risky and potentially dangerous jobs. What do they get out of it? What is the thread which holds them together? Nate is a good leader, and I buy that they would let him guide them through a job. It was obvious why they sought revenge in the first ep, but it's not so obvious what is driving them now. Why did Eliot agree to go to the warehouse with Parker when he really wanted to drink beer and watch football ...

Although other commenters discussed this pretty well, the idea is that they stayed together for the thrill of being on the uber-team, and then evolved into something ... more. There's no guarantee that'll last forever, though ...

Tom Galloway: One problem with the ep; I really disliked the speech Nathan gave Hardison about how if he really tried, he could do anything, become a lawyer, surgeon, etc. Um, the man's a worldclass computer hacker and electronics whiz (not the same thing) and is expert in multiple computer areas. It came across as really condescending to tell a worldclass expert in multiple difficult and practical fields that if he really, really, tried, he might actually be able to make something of himself one day.

Interesting, because that directly addresses one of Nate's problems, one we really hammer in "The First David Job": he still doesn't respect being a thief. One can argue whether he should or not, but that was intentional. Hes grown fond of Hardison, and wants him to succeeed in the legit world where the rules work. Because to him, that place he's fallen from is still the right place to be. Second season addresses this issue.

Nate is not always a very nice person.

Sammie: I see a couple of people have already asked, but I also wanted to know how much of his own stunt work Christian Kane does? Doesn't he ever get hurt or is he really indestructable?

Kane does 99.9999999% of his own stunts. And yes he does get hurt. Don't frikkin remind me.

Maya: Nate is so often seen with a glass of scotch in his hand. I was wondering, what is in Tim's glass in reality when he's filming those scenes? I doubt it's alcohol for real.

It's tea. I'm the one with the real booze in his glass.

Pcat: One thing we loved about it is that it shows Sophie having a relationship with people other than Nate -- and it's a relationship that doesn't rely on nagging and disapproval for a change. Everyone is at the top of their game, and that's fun to see.

Pcat! Anyway, yeah, if you look at the eps in the order above, you see the Sophie arc tracks a little more evenly, and it's not so Nate-centric over the course of the season.

Annnd before we get to the questions for "The First David Job", a sidebar:

We knew it wouldn't work. The Sophie/Nate relationship. Well, not at first, but as soon as we started working with the actors (and it was really Tim and Gina who got us here), we realized:

a.) If Nate's as screwed up as we want, Sophie's a sap for putting up with it now that she's actually working with the guy on a regular basis, but

b.) if Nate's normal enough for the relationship to work -- a relationship built on the already tenuous foundation of romanticized, idealized verisons of each other -- he's not as fucked up as we want.

So we embarked on an occasionally frustrating, but to me much more creatively satisfying arc, of showing that real relationships are really, really hard. Sophie, in the arc of the season goes through:

1) this guy I've got a sexy, flirty relationship with, kind of a mutual crush based on our exotic lifestyle, is finally available ...
2.)... but neither of us are exactly who we think we are ...
3.) ... he's a drunk. A baaaad drunk ...
4.) ... who won't talk about his problem, or even what we're doing here in this weird pseuod-relationship ...
5.) ... who plainly really cares for me but that bit of vulnerability is almost worse because he ...
6.) ... won't stop drinking and is getting worse and ...
7.) ... shutting us all out and self-destructing in front of us and --
8.) -- now says, out loud, how much he despises the fact his ex-wife thinks he's a criminal. Like me.

Frankly -- fuck that. Fuck YOU, Emotionally Unavailable Guy. I'd steal the Second David too.

So basically, Nate/Sophie was always meant to stutter. We'll see what happens now that they're starting from a different place in Season Two.

The two halves of the finale should really be seen together. The first half is Action Half, while tonight, while action-riffic, is mostly Nate closing out his emotional arc for the season. For better or worse. Whether his need for vengeance finally destroys him -- well, we DID say that we closed out Season One without any idea of whether we had a Season Two ...

Okay, questions from "The First David Job":

Alex D: I really liked this, though the continuity problem around how/when Sophie hooked herself up on the roof made my head hurt. Felt like a real step up in danger and stakes, the way a season finale should.

She reached down and hooked on while we were watching Parker run across the roof. Honest.

Thomas: LASER TRIPWIRES DO NOT WORK LIKE THAT!

Do not even get me started on the laser tripwires. However, TV Tropes basically require their presence for The Big Heist. And what's that? It's the oncoming rumble of the FUN TRAIN! WOOOOOOT!! WOOOOOOT!

Brian: ... why isn't there a single closed circuit security camera? Why, when the vibration sensor went off, didn't the security guys just look at their little screens and say, "Oh, there's someone in there!"

Oddly, this one is true. Our security consultant spends a lot of his time explaining why there are no closed-circuit cameras in most of these secure areas now. Go figure.

RA Porter: My only very small complaint is that I wish you'd given Alex Carter more to do. That guy's *funny*.

We only got Alex for that small role because he's friends with Mark. And he has more to do this week. But it was totally him doing us a favor.

Maya: Oh, a question. Was it a coincidence that Nate punched Ian in the face right after he'd kissed Sophie's hand? Could it be that there was a tiny bit of jealousy on his part as well? It may be that it felt good to punch him on several levels. :-P

Oh yes. And Nate's not the only punchy one this week.

Michael Clear: I didn't quite get why Nate never told his ex that she's working for the man responsible for her son's death.

Not explained. But explained this week.

Mitchy: I have a technical question about the ear pieces the team uses - oddly, Hardison kind of addressed it tonight but I didn't quite catch all the dialogue. When the team are wearing the ear pieces, they can hear what the other members of the team are saying. So how does that work when they're seperated and may all be talking at the same time, or having conversations amongst themselves? Is it just a cacophany of noise they have to learn to tune out and pick out the important stuff from?

They are built with the same circuitry as sonic screwdrivers. Plotconveniencetonium.

Right then, this is your open thread for the Season One Finale. I'll do a wrap-up this week, and then once-weekly updates on the show. Might actually start blogging about something else, finally ...

I'm so very glad that I'm not the only one who thinks like that!

"Interesting, because that directly addresses one of Nate's problems, one we really hammer in "The First David Job": he still doesn't respect being a thief."

Does that explain why Nate seems to have the least respect for Elliot? Because he views him as having the most "criminal" skill set?

"First David" was the first ep I've been able to catch. I thought it was very good... except for those damned laser tripwires. I coughed up my drink at that. Otherwise, bravo!

Haven't seen 2nd David Job yet, but if there is suggestions for season 2 my only request is you keep the 'inside' references to other people/shows. I go through scene by scene seeing if I can find them all. Cannot WAIT for the DVDs even if I have literally NITPICKED the copies I have of each episode to death.

These guys are Spycraft 2.0 characters -- action dice and everything.

I liked where you left it for going into a second season or even if (thank goodness this isn't true) there wasn't.

Questions for you:
When will we see the DVDs?
Looking back across the 13 episodes you have already done what do you think worked best and what didn't?
What's the big takeaway you'd give to those of us who are the aspiring types (in other words -- is there anything after producing this season that you wish every writer you were to interview for next season would know)?

Thanks,
Joe

Loved the finale. I'm left with just one question: Does IYS/Blackpoole still have the two Davids? Or did Sophie manage to walk away with them?

I really hope that we'll be seeing more of Mark Sheppard next year…

Anonymous said...

Excellent way to end a great season. Loved how the very last scene cut out at the exact instant where they either keep walking, or turn around and kick off season 2.

And I'm very glad they're all coming back, and Gina's not running off to ride the TARDIS or whatever as rumor had it. (Or not yet, at least.)

New episodes this summer? Man... that's an aggressive schedule. TNT must like you guys.

Where were the exterior scenes of Hardison's new MC Hammer house filmed? That place looks familiar.

jenniebee said...

I call shenanigans. Everybody knows that sonic screwdrivers are made from wonderflonium with unobtanium bearings and plenty of frequency grease.

Great work on the final episode. But when did they create the door behind the sarcophagus?

Anonymous said...

I second the love for "plotconveniencetonium." Yes. That.

The season finale was great and I adore that it didn't end on a cliffhanger, as I've always considered them lazy writing. Nope, all of you folks in the cast and crew will bring me back for season 2 because your show is awesome, not because someone got shot or whatever.

I love these characters so much and I wish you all well in making season 2! We'll be waiting :)

Anonymous said...

Cannot freaking wait for the new eps! I assume you WILL let us know when they will be aired, right? Also when the DVDs will be available?

And we can look forward to some more play by play on the filming? That will be even ever so much cooler now that we know the characters.

Great job, kudos to the whole team and the various directors!

Way to go. Very nice. Some nice single barrel, well aged bourbon on the rocks for all of you.

Very nice, Rogers. You spend eleven episodes building this lovely house of cards and then in episode twelve, you flip the damn table over.
Can't wait to see how it gets resolved tonight

As far as the eventual DVD/Blue ray release, it's beginning to look like a rental because I can't really justify buying the physical set after getting the episodes on iTunes. (Believe me, I almost had a panic attack while pre-ordering season "The Venture Bros".) And it does bum me out because while the picture quality is comparable to DVD's, I miss the juicy extras. My question is as a consumer, do you prefer the physical set or the download?

Sean Fagan said...

No questions. Just admiration.

I have greatly enjoyed the first season of this show. I have laughed a whole heck of a lot -- this last episode, in fact, was an absolute riot, and the cats are seriously pissed at how much I laughed.

I'm really looking forward to the second season. Thank you for 13 hours of entertainment.

After the glow fades, I'll probably go back to having questions and nits, but you all did a great job. So enjoy it for now :).

Y'know, after hearing Nate's reasons for not telling Maggie about Blackpoole's role in their son's death, I've decided that Nate is even more of a bastard. "Gee Maggie, I let you spend two years (IIRC) working for the guy who made a deliberate decision to let our son die because I'd was afraid that you wouldn't like me."

Yes, I'm engaging in a bit a hyperbole, but still...

Anonymous said...

Oh, and just what does "IYS" stand for anyway?

"Insure Your Shit?"

Anonymous said...

Rogers, you are an evil son of a bitch. You said there wouldn't be a cliffhanger ending.

How is that not a cliffhanger?

You'd better be working on season two at this exact moment!

Andrew Timson said...

How is that not a cliffhanger?

Well, the main plot of the episode has been resolved; if they didn't get a pickup, then the show could've ended there, with everybody walking away, and it would've been a satisfactory ending.

That said, with the pickup, there's pretty much only one way that things can go; it's just a question of how long Rogers teases us with the breakup before Leverage, Inc. 2.0 is built. :)

Anonymous said...

Wow, that was an utterly fantastic episode and a great end to season one. I like how they actually didn't end up stealing anything, as it was revenge that they really wanted.

I also like how this show clearly highlighted just why they need Nate and each other - the whole is more than the sum of the parts.

I also have one final request for the DvDs. Would it be possible to have a bit on the music you used in the show, as it really was a strong part of setting the tone of a few scenes.

gwangung said...

I like how they actually didn't end up stealing anything,

Oh, there was ample chance to steal, if things didn't work out....

And lots of laws did get broken. Hm. More grist for Nate's mill....

Darkrose said...

Made of win. That's all I've got.

Oh, and while everyone brought their A-game (Kari Matchett rocks!), Timothy Hutton absolutely blew me away. I was sniffling, and I *never* do that for TV shows.

Is it June yet?

I've been telling anyone who will listen to me how much I love your show, Rogers, but it occurred to me tonight when I turned to my wife and said, "I bet the Hot Coffee joke that 5% of the audience will get came from John and he probably had to fight for it," that I haven't said it directly to you.

Fucking brilliant season, man. I can not wait for season two, and you can put me down for one set of DVDs. You are providing commentaries, yes?

Unknown said...

Wil: "I bet the Hot Coffee joke that 5% of the audience will get came from John and he probably had to fight for it,"

Oh, I didn;t have to fight for it. Nobody else got it, and I slid it riiiiiight in.

Fine, I owe you a DVD set, and you owe me one villain role. We'll discuss.

Anonymous said...

In no order.

1) Wheaton as a villain in season two? Yeah, I'm smiling.

2) You had Kevin Tighe as your bad guy and yet managed to not make any references to "Road House". THAT sir, takes discipline!

3) Pure gooey satisfaction. Everything tied up and if TNT didn't renew you, you had a perfect closed unit. Very well played!

4) In my earlier comment, I meant to type "Season three of the Venture Bros".
Really, my english is very good, I learn it from a book.

5) Seriously, the finale rocked tonight, man. Awesome job! Cannot wait for season two!

Sonja said...

"The most important question, of course -- where does he keep his keys?"
Thank you for the various mental pictures that I need to get rid of now...

As for the season finale, that's what I call good television. Although I think it would have worked even better as a two-hour finale instead of 2 seperate episodes.
I'm really looking forward to the DVDs and to be able to watch the episodes in the intended order (and hopefully some nice special features).

As someone who loves a good romance, but hates the usual pathetic-woman-who-is-supposed-to-be-strong-but-that-is-always-tell-don't-show-loves-emotionally-screwed-up-jackass-who-is-supposed-to-be-an-awesome-hero I really, really LOVE what the finale did with Sophie/Nate.

I love that the big emotional progression for Sophie in this episode was apologising to her team, not making eyes at the damaged guy. I love that she didn't indulge in any Maggie-directed jealousy, but was smooth and professional. I love that her great moments and her failures aren't exclusively Nate-related. And I love that Maggie was able to acknowledge, with no angst, that she doesn't love Nate, but could like him.

It's like adult women were on TV behaving like adults or something!

Bg Porter said...

Okay -- now you've gotta ruin the Hot Coffee joke by explaining it.

Anonymous said...

The intended order makes the entire Nate/Sophie arc make so much more sense. And thanks for not fully sinking that ship.

Any plans on doing more flashbacks to the characters' former lives in season two? Seeing Nate and Sophie's former dynamic would be really interesting, not to mention our thieves' less-than-honorable past hijinks.

Bg Porter said...

On second thought, don't explain the Hot Coffee joke -- took me 3 seconds with Google + a few years of having read Wil's blog to put it together.

This is a long shot, but the name jumped out at me and I have to ask.

Was the alias "Peter Sinclair" inspired by the USA channel caper series Counterstrike?

To fill the gaps in between episodes, I've been watching episodes of Counterstrike and It Takes a Thief so the name just jumped out at me.

Hi John,
Not having cable on at home downunder I have restricted myself to just previewing the first couple of eps through alternative means(love them!) and will wait for DVD for the rest, so my question may have been addressed, if so, my apologies.

They all made a nice stash of loot off the falling share price. Now that the SEC does not have to spend all that time investigating Madoff, is there a chance that they will turn up on Leverages doorstep asking questions and threatening their nest eggs? Fully understand they would have covered their trail but that was my thought, it could turn up much later down the track as it took them a long time to follow the hidden trail.

Could there be a Maddoff inspired loss of investments? I know they are the uber-get it team but short options (even ones we must assume they hid well) etc can eventually get looked at. Even the SEC gets it right occassionally.

Many thanks and best of luck for continued success with the show.
cheers
David.

Has anybody noticed that there's nobody in the universe better than Kevin Tighe at playing calm and arrogant while being threatened? Whether it's his recurring role as Locke's father on Lost, when he appeared as a doctor on Law & Order: Criminal Intent, even his one-scene appearance as the Indiana governor on The West Wing, and again here -- shove a gun in his face, threaten him, punch him in the jaw, and he's just the perfect picture of arrogant surety.

The downside, of course, is that he sucks at falling apart. On CI when Goren had his climactic I-will-make-you-confess-because-I'm-bigger-and-smarter bit, Tighe's character's breakdown was wholly unconvincing, and sadly, that was the one flaw in the finale, as well.

Mind you, it didn't really matter that much, because you had Hutton's battered, weathered calm and Mark Sheppard's intelligent bastardry to make up for it. And besides, Tighe really was the best possible casting for the role.

But what especially impressed me was Sterling. In this character, you have created an actual worthy foe. Too often, the trap is to make the villain flawed or stupid, or to have the villain do something flawed or stupid in order to make the hero win. But Sterling is smart -- in fact, he may be smarter than Nate.

I liked the symmetry, also. In Part 1, Sterling wins because he knows how Nate and Sophie/Jenny think. In Part 2, Nate wins because he knows how Sterling thinks.

Very very very well done, Rogers (and the rest of your usual gang of idiots). I eagerly await the next season (and the DVD set, which I assume will be released at the same time as the premiere of season two, as is standard).

I watched four episodes in one day (thank you, the backlog of very, very boring paperwork that HAD to get done was lightened a lot by watching things go BOOM!) and got caught up all the way to The First David. And now that you post the actual arc thingamajimmie, I definately am a lot less squicked by Nate/Sophie, because---

Frankly -- fuck that. Fuck YOU, Emotionally Unavailable Guy. I'd steal the Second David too.

Is exactly how I feel.

(What? Mirroring a recent relationship I nuked in my own life? How can you tell?)

Plotconveniencetonium's good stuff, but I prefer baloneyum myself.

Oh, and a final note: a friend of mine who doesn't read my normal blog, just my niche blog (which I am not linking to, the likelyhood of you all wanting to read about 13th century hermit-mystics is slim to none), called for our usual Olde English geek-out, and she mentioned there was this show I might like, and how great it was, and there was a really good plot and it stars Timothy--

"Hutton," I said. "Yeah. Pumpkin, plot's not how you get ahold of my attention. For that? You need big 'splosions!" So, you just tell the networks they've got the Women Hobby Scholars Specializing in Early Medieval English Christian Writing aged 25-35 demographic all sewn up, since, you know, BOTH of us watch the show.

(Also? How awesome was it that Hardison painted the scary portrait? And saved it from the offices? And hey! Who's carrying the insurance note on the offices? And I'm going to stop blathering go back to my accursed paperwork and watch the Stork Job again.)

I asked last week why Nate never told his ex that Blackpoole was partly responsible for their son's death. Nate's irrational, illogical fear was one of the more normal and common things people feel in situations like that and made perfect sense. This was a brilliant season and can't wait till you all come back. I have a bet down that you'll jump the shark in season two by adding a precocious 10 year old and a cigar smoking chimp to the cast and I'll split the money with you if you make that come true.

R.A. Porter said...

I loved, loved, LOVED how the opening scene of "The Second David Job" mirrored last week's opening scene AND that the crane shot at the end was almost identical to the crane shot at the end of the pilot. I'm thrilled there's going to be a second season, but if there never had been, this would have been a perfectly wrapped package of awesome. Thanks, Rogers.

My review, which may or may not be perfectly coherent, is here.

Trust Me, not so much.

Looking forward to seeing Leverage in Canada. Or I might just buy the DVD when it comes out. It's a gamble, but judging by the comments, a pretty safe one.

"Trust Me, not so much."

Hardly surprising, since Trust Me is composed entirely of weak-ass sitcom plots pretending to be an edgy one-hour drama. Eric McCormack's sheer charm and Griffin Dunne's sheer talent has kept me watching, but Tom Cavanaugh's an empty shirt, and the endless focus on the uninteresting life of Monica Potter's character grows wearisome.

I owe myself a rewatching, but, off the bat...

1) The "hot coffee" gag was intentional? Rock. Nobody else caught it? Gah. And here I thought you'd hired geeks.

2) I actually thought Nate over-explained having kept the truth from Maggie. "Look what knowing that did to me." Done. Could be I'm still attributing a bit more altruism to Nate than is his due, though.

Now that she's hip, will we be seeing more of Maggie next season, or is she going to keep a respectful (or wary) distance?

3) Man, I haven't watched Lupin in years. I think I hear Netflix calling. Was there an explicit genre syllabus for the show with things like that on it? If so, would it be too telling a sort of thing to share?

Very good season finale, not only did it have a solid note that followed the development the whole season, but it had the good cliffhanger point that could have been attached to the series had someone been stupid enough to not renew it. Fortunately, TNT doesn't seem to employ the stupid executives that some networks, who shall remain nameless asshats, seem to adore.

Parker was enjoyably odd and mischievous, be it with the job they were pulling or with Maggy. The petting and sniffing was hilarious, as if Parker thought Maggy was fresh and new, with respect to being a crook, and thus she could smell it. Or, maybe, it could be the fact that Maggy had that "mom" vibe, too.

Now, in a bittersweet mix of sad and happy, I've got the long wait until the next season hits the air. How big of an episode order did you all get? I'm not one to watch TNT, so I don't know what a full order for them is, is it 22ish, or about the size of what you just had?

Lastly, in my geek out moment, you definitely need to snag Wil Wheaton for a villain, as he makes a damn good one, in my opinion. :D Bribe him, often, with DVDs and RPG books. ;)

Idiot executives seem to come and go—TNT has had them in the past, and probably will in the future.

Hopefully the far, far future.

How big of an episode order did you all get?
Fifteen episodes.

Excellent episode and an excellent season. Congratulations, and I'm looking forward to season two.

I have only one real question/request...are we going to get more of those Nextwave-esque flashbacks next season? 'Cause those things were great.

Spider Monk said...

Loved the finale, very satisfying. Congratulations on a great season. Lots of Leverage love out there in the community, in case you haven't heard.

Any chance of Sterling and Maggie hooking up next season? I thought I saw a connection, I'm just saying.

Mike Cane said...

>>>Excellent way to end a great season. Loved how the very last scene cut out at the exact instant where they either keep walking, or turn around and kick off season 2.

Yeah, what he said.

Shon Richards said...

Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but when they rescued Parker and Hardison by employing tactics that Parker and Hardison would use, it reminded me of old school JLA when the heroes would swap positions to break out of fiendish deathtraps.

I loved the whole season and I can't wait for more.

Stellar Drift said...

"Well, the network often has a different idea, based on their knowledge of their audience, for what episodes will most effectively hook viewers."

Or they don't have a clue, but they have the money ;)

"Considering our success, I'm not going to argue with TNT's judgment."

Indeed, you had nothing to do with it.

"Oddly, addicts -- and Nate has several addictions -- are very good art rationalization."

Humans are very good at it, that's how they keep living.

"Everybody's back."

And Maggie from time to time perhaps. The original IM team occasionally had special guest star specialists join the team - speaking of which, what's with all this talk about Wheaton being a crook instead of a old acquaintance with leet skills - next time they need to confuse Sterling. Assuming Sheppard has time of from Dollhouse - now Joss Whedon, him you can cast as a crook ;)

"if Nate's normal enough for the relationship to work -- a relationship built on the already tenuous foundation of romanticized, idealized verisons of each other -- he's not as fucked up as we want"

You have to be really fucked up to believe in romance.

"Might actually start blogging about something else, finally "

See ya!

Loved the finale, but weren't we promised that Spenser would get a smackdown as well?

Well, he did get to smack Hardison around a bit. Payback for the slushy, the slam into the police car, maybe even that weird portrait

Ok have to ask. I got the Hot Coffee joke, but I have to wonder if the D-E-D dead is a reference to Grease 2?

and if it's not are you going to laugh at me?

Unknown said...

@Wil: I'm going to bet that more people got the Hot Coffee joke than got Futurama's "St. Pauli Exclusion Principle Girl" joke. Still, chuckles all around for the nerds.

The fun train was rolling strong on this one. Well done, all. I'm looking forward to seeing the crew come back together in 2x01 :D

I agree that First and Second David are probably best watched back to back. I checked it out both ways. Yeah, both were that good that I watched twice within a few days. :-D

"I feel used." Might be my favorite line. The con got conned. I really hope we see more of Maggie in the future.

Sterling, too, come to think of it. You could *see* the guy's mind working at the end as he caught on to what Nate and the team had done, and what this meant for him. Of course, the fact that Nate left him in a good spot didn't hurt either.

Sophie's "apology" to Eliot was particularly good; I enjoyed their interaction. Somehow this scene with the team also helped to drive home something we saw in First David, which was how there is a separation between Nate and the rest.

I agree with those who felt the finale ended on just the right tone. Pause...do they turn around? And the screen goes black.

Thanks to everyone, this first season has been a lot of fun. Looking forward to summer now!

Anonymous said...

I'm a little dissapointed that you said there will rarely be the occasion of recurring villains or multi-episode arcs.

I found that the example of Sterling in Season One showed how much potential can come from a situation just like that.

Is there a particular reason the writers feel this is not something to be delved into?

What an ending to the season. I ahve no complaints, only praises. Can't believe how attached we got to these characters, watching the last scene, I was in tears just like Sophie. Good thing we have an idea how the scene ends. I hate cliffhangers.

Thanks for giving us the correct airing order and for explaining the Nate/Sophie's arc in the first season. Can't wait to see what comes next for the two of them.

Anonymous said...

Watched both back to back (also played the first david episode on my DVR last week so ratings would hopefully be sent).

Loved them both! The change in Sophie from the Nigerian job where she's taken aback by the quick drop to throwing open her arms to Parker was very special. (Seems like she was inviting her for a big hug more than anything.)

I'll second or third the love for Kari Matchett. Loved her work on "Wonderfalls" lo these many years. Parker stroking her hair was genius.

Sheppard's last speech "your entire plan rested on me being a selfish prick" (paraphrasing). Priceless.

Get the DVDs out SOON!

I just watched the second half of the finale, and at the moment you cut to credit, I bounced on the couch and swore. A LADY AND THE TIGER ENDING? I believe my exact words were "a**f***ing c***biters", only in all caps and with several exclamation points. And, y'know, spoken.

I have missed several episodes this season (something I intend to remedy shortly) and I am definitely going to badger my dad into watching the show sometime.

I look forward to the second season, but unlike some folks, I don't want to see any more Sterling for a while- we don't need villain fatigue with Romo Lampkin.

Although that just popped a terrible idea into my head about an evil counterpart to the Leverage crew- maybe a corporate dirty tricks unit? -made up of BSG alums.

(I remember that Warren Ellis said something about comments with story ideas being terrible because it opens him up to lawsuits if he does anything like that- if that has any legal weight, I'll include a disclaimer right now. I waive any and all rights to any stories that look anything like that idea, sound anything like that idea, or may have spoken to that idea at a party one time.)

Stellar Drift said...

Hey anonymous, Sterling is not a villain - he is our friend the law ;)

R.A. Porter said...

@Stellar Drift, excellent point. Which of course means that if Rogers and company want, at some point the team can be caught between two antagonists at opposite ends of the lawful spectrum, or even between Sterling - Lawful Neutral? Evil? - and someone else like themselves who is Chaotic Good. ;)

Anonymous said...

I'm only talking about having recurring characters; whether villains, allies, whatever.

Like say if the team runs into another con team who is gunning after the same con job as they are ( this is just an example).

A rival team wouldn't neccesarily be villains but they could be recurring and the idea could be fun. Just things like that.

Just curious.

I have just seen the finale, and congratulations on a job well done, everybody. I loved the whole season, and am busy pushing it to all my friends. DVDs soon, please!

This show came seemingly out of nowhere, and hooked me hard. Now I have to have more - so it's just as well you got picked up... ;-) which is great news. I'm really looking forward to season 2.

Unknown said...

That was an excellent finale for an excellent season. Can't wait for Season Two!

Also, thank you thank you thank you for the intended episode air order.

And please don't let Nate sober up. :)

briddie said...

Although maybe Sophie could "lighten up", that would be good.

I figure meth heads leave the keys in the car. Kind of like punctuality; they ain't got it.

Will we ever find out if the two Davids that stayed in the museum were the real Davids, or did Sophie manage to take them, too? BTW, Erick Avari was the perfect choice for that role. Perfect.

DougBot said...

"You learn... and you con." Love it.

I also enjoyed seeing Kari Matchett in these, she was fantastic in the Nero Wolfe movies that Hutton did back in the day. Any chance we will see Maury Chaykin in season two?

Hey, how come the DVDs are coming out only one day before the season 2 premiere? I was counting on at least a week so as to addict more viewers. Any way you can get it moved up so I can plan a DVD marathon party the weekend before season 2 starts? TNT may have a marathon, but it's way better with the DVDs (which I hope are in the proper order, per your post).

Can't wait for season 2!!!!

Mike Jozic said...

I wish I could congratulate you on a great season but I can't. Not because I think you guys have done a crummy job of it (from what I have seen the show looks great!) but because I have yet to get my hands on any episodes and I wanted to give Rogers and crew proper respect and not just download the show.

I'm telling you, I can't believe how the world is conspiring to keep this show legally out of my hands. iTunes Canada does not sell them. The DVDs, which were released on July 14th, are nowhere to be found in my area (I still have no explanation for that, either). It probably goes without saying by this point that my local cable provider does not carry TNT.

I do realize that the set is available through Amazon Canada, and I will likely have to get my copy that way, it's just frustrating not being able to have it anywhere close to when I want it after waiting all this time to get my grubby hands on it in the first place. I mean, it's not like the show is a little seen Danish mini-series, it's a top rated show on an ad-supported cable network.

And the industry wonders why folks turn to piracy.

Anyway, good luck on season 2, guys.
