The Abandoned

This movie, opening Feb. 23, is pretty great and deserves mention. I caught it during the LA Horrorfest. The Horrorfest was advertised as "Movies too disturbing to be shown to mainstream audiences", which I quickly discovered meant "Movies that do not yet have a distributor, kinda, and frankly are pretty so-so", with this exception. It's very streamlined, a wee master's class in building genuine tension and suspense in a contained setting. Low budget, but it doesn't need to have more money -- it's fine just the way it is.

A woman returns home to the Russian countryside to solve the mystery of her mother's death. Complications ensue. It accomplishes something Americans films don't tend to do well -- creeeeepy.
