I really, really love Dark Room when it comes time to just write. It's a text processor more than a word processor, but man it lets me just spew my bilious prose onto the page. I end up going back and reformatting for indents, etc in Word or OpenOffice later, but this lets the words out without having to chat to this JohnRogersSexyBeard69 fellow that keeps insisting on sending me IMs.
Boy, could I not make AbiWord open .doc files without doing crazy formatting shit. NeoOffice, the OS X port of OpenOffice, heck yes. AbiWord, nothing but trouble. How the hell does a word processor decide to cram in extra spaces in the middles of words?
That being said, totally downloaded several things off that list, so thanks for the pointer!
Though XP will open basic zip files, the open source 7-zip opens many, many more types of archives. This includes rar, tar, gz, windows cabs and other system archives. It's build in compression method is generally superior to zip as well.
Also look for TweakUI to turn on a bunch of system functions normally hidden from the user. The most important one is being able to turn off auto-running cd/dvds and flash drives when you insert them.
In reply to That Girl, the latest incarnation of Supreme Power by Stracyznski might be a good starting point for someone interested in Heroes. It's traditional comic book heroes as they might appear in our real world. Very cynical but an excelent read - and graphics to die for. There's 3 initial books Supreme Power: Contact (#1–6) Supreme Power: Powers and Principalities (#7–12) Supreme Power: High Command (#13-18) the main arc then continues in Supreme Power: Hyperion (with 2 other less arcy char books as well) The latest book is I believe Squadron Supreme (vol.2) but not read this myself yet.

I can recommend Blue Beetle (ahem) also RUNAWAYS (very cool, and essentialy standalone), and the ULTIMATE SPIDERMAN run. I do also dig the INVINCIBLE, although there was a weird soft spot in the middle of the run. It's back up to speed, though. PLANETARY is pretty col, and if he;s a particularly mature 15 year old, blow his mind with TRANSMEROPOLITAN. Yes, it's got filth and drugs and booze and hate and swearing -- and it teaches you that truth will out, and there arer some things wrth dying and fighting for.
You'll note that recently we had a discussion on young adult fiction here on this very site. Also, if he digs Doctor Who, there are a bunch of tie-in novels which are aprently better than usual.
For a kid who likes Heroes, I'd say Planetary. Accessible but gorgeous art, lots of awesome this-is-the-secret-world stuff, and enough superhuman powers to keep his interest piqued. Also, incidentally, provides a concise history of comics and pop culture in the 20th century, though he won't notice that until he starts reading more.
