Writing: The Freelance #2

Frikkin' FEBRUARY for part one? Well, I did want to wait and see until they shot the thing, and then I thought I had some time before broadcast -- the episode was originally #9 in the run, but got bumped up to #3, as in tonight.

On a related note, I will be doing the podcast today, with Colin. Download and watch the episode the second time with my dulcet tones in your ear.

Tell you what, I will post about Breaking the Story in the Room tomorrow, so we can discuss things spoiler-iffic that are relevant to the writing process. Because it will be very interesting for some of you to see how much the story changed from breakdown to shoot.

Oh, and Batman 655 is a thing of beauty. Just an aside.

I can't wait to see the episode, this series has made my dvr list. I loved the humor shown with the smart house subplot in ep2.

What happened with the blonde guy from Ally Mcbeal? It was never really explained, but I guess he got sacked. Oh and bringing back the scientist lost in time warp was a good move, I like that actor though I don't know his name.

I'm obviously not an obsessive film/tv fan, but I knows what I likes :)

EUReKA's not really gelling for me. Part of the problem is that they're focusing on the non-genius characters (the marshall, his daughter and the uber-military trained deputy, the administrator) with the geniuses as background supporting characters and plot devices. Which may be because it's hard to write folk whose intelligence is supposed to be much greater than your own.

Still, they're not coming across as geniuses. Take Susan, who we learned in ep 2 had an MIT graduate degree. You could've replaced that background with "liberal arts/business degree from a mid-level state school" and it wouldn't have made any difference with respect to her actions and character; she just didn't act like someone that smart, or with a science background.

And all too often, it's the non-genius marshal who comes up with the clever idea. Once or twice maybe to show he's no slouch, but the residents should be coming up with most of these.

And finally, the administrator's right; the marshal's not funny, although he thinks he is. But there should be a *lot* more humor flying around from the geniuses. For a good example of how things are really like at the closest real world equivalent to Eureka, namely Caltech/MIT, I strongly recommend the 1980s movie Real Genius. The only two scenes that strike me as off in it are that the school President is too foggy, at least in his first few scenes, and that other students in the dining hall would not react the way they do when a certain thing happens to Mitch there. A fair number would've been actively sympathetic.

Well, the humor thing is salt to taste -- I wouldn't mind more jokes myself, but I know SciFi wanted to make sure it didnt come across as too jokey. The odd, darker tone it's landing on is a pleasant surprise even for me who was involved peripherally, and I'm digging it.

Again, salt to taste on the genius thing, but I'm of the opinion you DON'T write geniuses as wildly emotionally different. Scientists are selfish ,shortsighted, make bad and thoughtless decisions about their personal lives all the time. (Sometimes even more emotionally clueless, in my experience) Even Hawkings wound up screwing his nurse.

To wit, I'm not sure how Susan's two MIT degrees would change her emotional, visceral reaction to the creepiness of her husband cloning her and havng a biological son she's never met. You don't use the forebrain on shit like that.

Real Genius was cute, but there's a big difference in the tone of Eureka to that movie -- primarily, that movie is about people in their early 20's fighting authority and The Man, while those in Eureka are grown-ups with families, responsibilities, and twenty years of career at stake, for the most part. When you're 19, fucking with the laser in the quad is fun. When you're forty, screwing with the cyclotron is a good way to get everybody killed, and you're a dick for doing it. That one scene that whipped by in episode 2, I thought it was a lovely grace note -- the workplace fatality rate in Eureka is twice the national average. it is not the most fun place in the world to live. It has its perks, but also its downsides.

There is that (20s vs. 40s), but the thing is that I've worked at MIT and I currently work somewhere generally considered to hire lots of very smart people (yes, I know that comes off as bragging, but I need it to make my point). And the common element that distinguishes MIT from most other, non-tech, schools at a similar intellectual level and this and similar companies from Foobar Corp is the sense of fun and experimentation and play as a matter of course.

Let's look at, for lack of a better term, our recent "celebrity uber-scientists". Hawking has a sly sense of humor and thought it'd be fun to appear on both Star Trek: TNG and the Simpsons (even having an action figure made after his latter appearance). Feynman...just read "Surely You're Joking Mr. Feynman" and "What Do You Care What Other People Thing". Real Nobel Prize winners regularly participate in the Ig Nobel Prize ceremonies. Etc.

So, in addition to being creeped out about being cloned and having a genetic child, I think a part of Susan (or at least someone in the room) should also be going "Hey, he not only cloned a human, but aged it to the right physiological age *and* replicated her memories and self [to a point, since Susan-2 was willing to be with him and have a family while Susan-1 wasn't, implying some differences]...wow, that's cool! How'd he do that? Can I store backups of myself [reference any number of stories from John Varley's Eight Worlds series]? Etc.". Where's the sense of wonder, experimentation, and play? Where's the wordplay and banter? Where are the interesting office and home decorations?

Henry shows a little of it, but so far he's been more of a plot device in terms of having whatever profession/knowledge is needed to move the plot a bit without having to introduce a new character with a particular speciality to do so.

I really enjoyed tonight's Eureka. Nice premise. That Anderson was quite the asshole.

I love how the show is both episodic and a serial. Each week just picks up right where the previous week ended, so there's the continuing overall seasonal storyarcs, but, for the most part, you can just sit there and watch an episode and enjoy it on its own. So far, anyway.

i enjoyed it tonight. oh big monkey dude, your kung fu is strong. any more on line like this? i especially loved the sherrif gloating to the "genius" about having outsmarted him. . .clever premise, sho'ws got me hooked for now.

Speaking of that thread back in February:

5 act structure is heresy.

So I take it that the lesson here is: heresy be damned when you're writing a freelance assigment for a show that's not yours, yes?

Hey John, I was just wondering how much of a pain it is to write an episode as a 'part nine' only to see it arrive on air as 'part three'.

Do you write it knowing that it may end up landing way off target or does stuff that's already filmed get edited around so that the continuity doesn't get scrambled?

Batman 655 is the one where the Dark Knight goes camping on that mountain with Heath Ledger, right?

Anonymous said...

Hey, nice work, John! Alas, the girl playing the sheriff's dad had no more business playing Puck than my cats do (though I'll grant the possibility that she may have been directed to read the part like a bad high school actress), but I liked this episode, particularly the wife's decision at the end.

I'm still not sure what to make of the series as a whole - I'm not loving the "everything wraps up neatly at the end" design, but I am really enjoying trying to figure out who the Bad Gal is affiliated with and what her goal is.

Out of curiosity, how much autonomy does a writer get in a show like this? Are you told what story to write, what characters to introduce, etc.? Or are you able to introduce characters for others to play with?

Anonymous said...

As to how much autonomy Mr. Rogers had, I noticed that he got credit for the screenplay, but that the story credit went to someone else (I don't remember who). I'll admit to my shame that it's likely I wouldn't have even glanced at it if I hadn't expect his name to show up.

I'm sure that his next piece on the freelance project will cover it, but I'd guess this means that he was given basic story points and then developed the actual script around it. I don't know about everyone else, but this makes me MORE interested in the process involved.

Looking forwarad to that (hopefully) later today...

Tom:

Well, that level of scientific curiousity -- you've just smacked right up agasint the wall of doing sci fi on mainstream TV. Sure, you can WRITE cool little geeking-out scenes (I originally had a longer section on how memory works and how the memory wiper might theoretically be built), but the network -- even Sci FI -- will punch you in the neck and cut it. I can sometimes see their point, that they're desperately trying to get traditionally non-sci fi fans to watch their shows and so it shouldn't be tech-heady, although I disagree with them about 70% of the time. Again, it's a matter of balance, and while both Andy and I fall heavier on the "Warren Ellis" side of the seesaw, we are spending other people's money. You probably won't see the sort of scenes/character beats you're talking about on American TV until it becomes genuinely independently financed.

The scientists do lighten up as the Season goes on, with a more merry prankster vibe -- again, as I understand it, the network wanted to make sure the show felt grounded to begin with, before hijinks ensue.

And the five act structure is still heresy. But if that's the show structure, you bite down on the leather and work around it. Acts four/five really just become a split Act Four. I hate it, but what are you going to do?

Sizemore: Some things did indeed get edited and shifted around on the fly to fit the #9 to #3 slide -- there was a lot more Carter/Stark stuff originally. It was handled in stages, though, if I remember, as we knew we were going to slide it up, and it slid a little earlier at a time.

I am so digging this show.

Hope it gets to last.

Fair enough (re: writing for non-fans). But based on the two eps I've seen (yours is sitting on the Tivo), for me the show's just not what I'd hoped for from the description/promo. I was interested in the concept of "town of science geniuses", which based on my experiences at MIT, with geek houses, and at my current job, just really isn't being used save for the random gadget or Henry as walking plot movement device.

Again with the exception of Henry, all the focused on characters are the non-geniuses, with a side order of Carter the non-genius coming up with the ideas that solve the problems. Heck, neither he nor Zoe seem to be having any problems with being in a situation where they're both at the far left of the intelligence bell curve...possibly because he keeps coming up with those key ideas and they don't. Frankly, it almost smacks of anti-intellectualism; "See, the geniuses can't figure things out, but our normal macho guy can!"

The show's OK for what it seems to actually be; a mystery set in an isolated environment against an uber-force (in this case a corporaton or three, or perhaps another government branch), but what I hoped was the key concept of town of geniuses is something that seems relegated to background references, which don't show off how geniuses tend to act in my experience. It's both not feeling "right" to me, nor being used at anywhere near its potential, at least as I can see it.

The device/McGuffin reminded me of the film Looker, but as I've only seen that film once my memory might be hazy.

The subplot with Jack and his daughter's play was great. Guest star Tamlyn Tomita is always worth watching.

I really like this show.

I'll definitely get the DVD.

John, your story was brilliant. Almost too creepy, though. Over 20 years of pulling those stunts with the gizmo? Sheesh. Have some mercy.

But, it definitely provoked an emotional reaction, and I can't say I've seen that particular plotline before. That's what's great about sci-fi. So, I'm definitely hooked on this series.

Anonymous said...

Overall, I'm digging the show...I don't know if I would if it wasn't summer and nothing else was on, but it's cute.

Okay *Spoiler Alert*

The only problem I had with your episode is the "ticket book clue". Admittedly it's petty, but it totally bugged me.
If enough pressure was applied to the ticket book that the Hardy Boys "rub the pencil" trick would work, wouldn't it have just come up on THAT ticket's carbon? I probably wouldn't have even noticed if both the Sherrif AND Henry hadn't needed a to comment on it...but I mean...c'mon...give the audience a LITTLE credit...geez.

People here seem to think that if you're a "genius" in terms of being able to great things in a field of science, then you will be a genius in all other fields of endeavor. Well, it doesn't always work that way. In fact, I think that type of genius is rare, even in the top of various fields.

Most of these guys are really smart, but they aren't trained or used to solving crimes. Carter solved what was going on because that's where his particular skills lie and he hasn't gotten used to the amount of general weirdness in Eureka. He doesn't automatically assume that cattle mutilations are because the SETI guys accidentally sent an insult to Vega back in '73.

I have no problem see Carter as better detective than the various science geniuses around him. I have limited experience with this. I outperformed my sister big-time back in school (in all subjects). I'm way better at math and any type of science class. However, I'll tell anyone who asks that she's smarter than I am. Just as an example, I'm useless with tools, have problems socializing, and make very little in my job and she exceeds me in all these areas. I'm glad that we've yet to run into the all-purpose ubersmart guy who out-does everyone at everything. That's the type of guy that I'd have trouble believing. I'd probably hate him too.

Which lets me segue into the villian of Tuesday's show. God, that guy was a monster. He's especially creepy because he didn't really seem to see anything wrong with his actions. He realizes that things will go bad if he's caught but he didn't seem to have the least bit of guilt for stealing years of other people's ideas. I see what Mr. Rogers was talking about when he talked about the dark atmosphere of the show.

The ticket book -- gaaah how that haunted us. At least I squeezed in the Henry joke about how that was a bad idea ...

Glad you dug the nasty vibe of the villain. We went back and forth on this -- you can actually hear me stutter a bit over it on the podcast, as the cast was such a friendly affair, I didn't want to harsh the vibe -- but Anderson is emotionally a rapist. Tamlyn really nailed that speech and that read on the day, I have to say.

There will be many more "This is how the town is different" hijinks coming up. The first three -- one of the reasons they moved mine up, I think -- helped ground the show, so now they can lighten up a bit.

OK, sorry to keep going on about this, but I just realized another way of trying to make my point about how the geniuses aren't being portrayed.

Let's go back to Real Genius. Yes, most of the characters are in or barely out of their teens. Still, the movie manages to nail five different genius personality archetypes.

Professor Hathaway: Genius as arrogant bastard. He's smarter than all but a few people, knows it, is out for what's best for himself, and obviously sneers at all those he considers beneath him.

Mitch: Genius as naive innocent. He doesn't have real world experience (and is both much smarter than his initial peers *and* much younger than anyone he can talk to about what matters to him), tends to think the best of people and is really looking for real peers.

Jordan: Genius as borderline ADD and innocent pragmatist. Her mind is constantly working, bouncing off many different areas and ideas. Her life is a constant struggle to find something new to challenge and occupy herself with. At the same time, she's focused on what works for what she's trying to accomplish (not sure I'm phrasing this right. The canonical scene for this is when she first meets Mitch, and keeps talking with him as he walks into a men's room and stands in front of urinal. Finally, she notices that he's still just standing there, asks why, he replies he can't do what's needed, she says "Because of me?", he replies "Um, yes", and her, perfect, reply is a casual, non-judgemental, "Weird." and then finishing what she has to say and leaving so he can go. To her, it's completely irrelevant that they're of different genders (at that point anyway); what's important is the conversation.)

Lazlo: Genius as burn/dropout. He's still one of, if not the, smartest guys in the room. But he's reached a point where he just does what strikes his fancy, whether it be practical (the contest) or not (playing with fractals). You can't order him around, but you can ask for advice.

Chris: Genius as trickster. He's still serious and responsible when necessary. But he's going to have fun...where fun is only limited by his substantial imagination, creativity, and knowledge. His jokes and commentary are smart and rapid-fire, and you've got to be paying attention or you'll miss something and/or be left off-balance.

So, yeah, geniuses do have similar emotions, basic experiences, etc. as non-geniuses. But there are certain behavoiral archetypes which also come into play, and I just don't see Eureka hitting those notes; it seems the same behavior would be happening if instead of being a 50 year old town of uber-geniuses, Eureka happened to be on top of a buried hunk of alien tech that random residents are trying to figure out, in some cases succeeding and using. I want to see the behavior and results of 50 years of town of geniuses, not just what random cool gizmos they've come up with.
