Two-Movie Weekend

So rare. The weekend where you catch two movies, and they're both pretty damn good -- hell one ties Thank You for Smoking for my favorite of the year.

The Descent: I am mildly claustrophobic. There were times in this lean, nasty little horror film that I genuinely felt like puking from anxiety. And that was before the ... bad things happen. Women kicking ass, not being victims. Very recommended.

Little Miss Sunshine: If you'd told me five years ago that I would revel in the sheer joy of seeing Greg Kinnear and Steve Carrell act together, I'd have taken away your bong. This may be one of those movies that there's less to than I initially think because of the warm feelings it generates, cut with a helluva lot of sheer shot-craft and acting, but damn. A wonderful example of what you can do at this price range. And their DP and Location Manager should get a big wet kiss on the mouth. Highly recommended.

As recommendations without context are useless, a quick look at my top picks for 2006 so far. In no particular order:

-- Thank You for Smoking
-- An Inconvenient Truth
-- Brick
-- Little Miss Sunshine
-- The Descent
-- Slither (fuck you. I say SLITHER!)
-- Kid's Category: Monster House

I hold reserve on Superman Returns until the end of the year for personal reasons, and a few others I didn't catch on the big screen. Jesus, no wonder I'm in this weird "I want to do smaller movies" phase of my career. Either my tastes have shifted, or the movies have shifted my tastes for me ...

Cool movies don't have a budget. They have an attitude.

    Slither!!!

Indie movie rec for a movie I rented this weekend: "Zombie Honeymoon".

It's a love story, where hubby turns into a zombie and Wife does her best to stand by her man. All the gore and laughs you'd expect from a low-budget horror movie, but at its core a movie with more than entertainment on its mind. Good stuff.

I'm actually really looking forward to renting Slither. And watching it alone. And returning it to Scarecrow without telling anybody that I know in real life that I watched it.

  5. “Tristram Shandy-A cock and Bull Story”. A bloody lovely film it’s “This is Spinal Tap” meets “ Sense and Sensibly”. You are Mildly Claustrophobic? Really! Define mildly.

  6. I found Superman Returns rather boring to be honest, especially upon second viewing (had to check out the 3D IMAX). It felt like a wax museum version of Superman, eerily reminiscent of the Christopher Reeve versions but without a pulse. The biggest problem is that the love triangle, while intriguing, goes nowhere. We know Supes isn't going to do anything underhanded to win back Lois because he's such a decent guy, and since James Marsden's character is so decent as well, the drama is inert. And Lois is supposed to have spunk. Without her urban cynicism and attitude the dynamic between her and decent, midwestern Clark is also inert...I second the reccomendation of Zombie Honeymoon. I had the pleasure to cut the trailer for it and it is a fun little zom-rom-com.

  8. I didn't see V4V yet -- was really stacked up when it cam eout. I will check out Zombie Honeymoon. I dug Miami Vice, but it didn't stick with me.

Got Cock and Bull Story sitting on my DVD now.

  9. How the hell did Slither make so little money? It's easily the funniest movie I've seen this year, and one of the best too

reel fanatic: I think it had something to do with the zombies, gore, tentacle rape scene(s?), and thinly veiled sexual subtext. I think a lot of the US doesn't really get up in the morning eager to pollute their minds with that sort of thing. It's more popular amongst those of us who enjoy keeping our mental septic systems well-excercised for when we really need it.

Rogers: V4V had one really seriously pulled punch that continues to bother me long after the exhilaration of the piece as a whole has faded with time. That said, Hugo Weaving must be considered one of the great vocal and physical actors of his generation and V4V is 100% worth your time just to watch him at work. There's even an Agent Smith cameo that I swear has to be have been intentional.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for including BRICK on your list. Rare to see that much passion, conviction and sheer commitment on screen these days. It drives me absolutely crazy when I hear people denouce it as just a hollow exercise in style. I thought Rian Johnston did an amazing job.

  12. Fuck zombies!

Werewolves, that's where it's at! They're like Zombies but cuddlier.

Slither made me laugh but...I dunno about "best of the year". &lt mild spoliler &gt
The rape scene was too weird. Everyone in the cinema was laughing, becuase it was set up like a joke. &lt /mild spoliler &gt

    Have you seen HARD CANDY?

That movie stayed with me for weeks. The performances just crackle -- Ellen Page gives one of the best performances I've ever seen an young actress give, bar none.

The writing strained a little big under the weight of the premise towards the end, but it was still damn engaging for a movie about two people alone in a house.

"Women kicking ass, not being victims."

Like every bloody other film. At least being a horror, some of them will die.

Aah, nothing like a bit of misogyny to lighten up a discussion of summer movies! Anonymous would rather no female characters or just passive/dead ones? It's a bit difficult to tell from his brief missive.

Don't worry your pretty little head, Mr. Anonymous, there are lots of annoyingly weak and fragile female characters in modern Japanese horror films - except for the villains - so just head to your foreign film section and enjoy.

  17. Pretty good list there. I completely agree on Thank You For Smoking and Brick. My two favorites of the year. The only one you're missing is Uwe Boll's masterpiece, Bloodrayne. Oh wait, that was last year. I guess that would explain the omission.

Not much love for Miami Vice in the Geekschriften.

Michael Mann is too big even for the big screen as some people see it, but I think it is the most devastating movie since The New World.

I enjoyed Brick so much. I've rented the DVD just to savor it again. It's one of those films that may or may not be that good. I don't know because I enjoyed it so much that it got right past my filters. Tristram Shandy is excellent, a real hoot and structurally intriguing.

Oh, and Miami Vice's production budget was around $150 million. Not exactly "no-budget".

I really enjoyed "Cock and Bull" -- it left me wanting to see more of both the movie about egocentric movie makers, and more of the movie they were attempting to make. And leaving you wanting more is a good thing...

Looking forward to "Sunshine" - and "Scanner" is my favorite of the year so far.

I actually did that already--I saw it in the theater, in a matinee showing on a weekday towards the end of its run. (Working nights has its advantages.)

I was literally the only person in the theater.

It's not an experience that's easy to duplicate, but watching a horror movie on the big screen by yourself is an absolutely transcendent experience. It's just so immersive. When I got to the bathtub scene, well...for the first time, I understood the exact meaning of the phrase, "an ecstacy of terror".

'Slither' just rocks, I'm so glad it's got a DVD release date at last, and I urge everyone to go buy it.

Slither, Brick, and Little Miss Sunshine are also my favorites. Alan Arkin telling Greg Kinnear that he's proud of him and the final family dance are PERFECT moments.

I had a BBQ and I was defending Slither. A few people looked at me like I was retarded, then I told them the "ginese people" line. They apologized.

Slither didn't make money because of "something to do with the zombies, gore, tentacle scene(s?), and thinly veiled sexual subtext."???

I would think that would make it a million seller! (Maybe not the rape, but all of the other items!)

Hehe, you've almost answered your own question: V4V (4, not H) = V for Vendetta.

I have seen essentially NO movies this year, and cannot make any comments.

jeff: Well, you have to understand, the real market for that sort of... thing is video/DVD. I was hardly surprised to see Slither sink with nary a ripple in the theatres, but I expect a brisk rental business for it. I plan to help.

  30. chopped nuts,

Your disc might be bad, but the dialogue in Brick can zip by pretty fast and a lot of it is kind of mumbled. I kind of enjoyed it; added to the murky atmosphere.

  31. "Slither" was awesome! I enjoyed that entirely more than I thought I would, but I think Nathan Fillion is rather underrated.

"The Descent" didn't do a whole hell of a lot for me.

We're looking forward to watching "Brick" in the near future.
