A Quick Clarification ...

... worth noting. First off, I actually like the idea of Libertas. I genuinely believe that niche-targetting is not only the future of entertainment, it's not even a bad future of entertainment. Although I didn't particularly dig the film, I love the fact the Mel Gibson scored with Passion, which was a true indie film. Scored to the point he can now make a film about the Mayan societal collapse, also in a dead language. I like Libertas, because I like capitalism. You see, HOLLYWOOD LIKES MONEY. I cannot say that enough.

I am just more than a little distressed that someone who seems to have such little grasp of both how the industry actually works and no concrete ability to comment/develop films, not to mention a set of ethical standards that seem ... errr ... situational, is the guy collecting cash from well-meaning conservatives. This leads to the other note, which is that post started as the lead-in to the "Munich, movies and morality plays" post which is of some actual value to the Spec-Monkeys, but I just couldn't stop the smackdown. Hey, a guy has his weaknesses. That post will come later, probably Monday

  1. I consider myself a reasonably intelligent demi-monkey, but try though I might time and again to make heads or bare butt out your second paragraph, I am left scratching myself and snacking on fleas. What smackdown and who is it directed at? Passion? Munich? Both?

I have to wonder what conservative values aren't being given a fair shake in "liberal Hollywood".

Are we going to return to the era of bad Schwarznegger action films where the lone hero, armed only with his righteous cause and a metric assload of munitions, takes on a passel of villains and dispatches them methodically, wisecracking all the time?

Are we to see the antithesis of Mississippi Burning -- a small white Southern town struggling to maintain its cultural integrity and the threat of miscegenation with the growth of its African-American populace?

Or a romance where a radical bra-burning feminist sees the truth of her hateful, immoral ways and comes to be the loving and obediant wife she secretly yearns to be?

I guess my real question is, is there a "red-state-value" story that wants to be told that won't come off as either mindlessly shallow or blatanty propaganda?

Conservatives wouldn't frame such stories that way. There would be the early 20s single woman, ostensibly liberal at the start of the film, who gets pregnant by her worthless blue state liberal boyfriend. She's tempted by the ease of legal abortion, especiallyl since she lives a godless, atheistic, free love kinda lifestyle, in defiance to her caring, loving, devoted Christian parents who only want what's best for her.

In the end, after a long, grueling character arc involving substance abuse and a lot of loveless sex (with carefully placed T&A shots, of course) she returns to her roots. Supported by the faith she had so callously rejected, she finally ends up marrying the good, hard working, church going fellow her parents had been trying to fix her up with all along... the one she thought of as 'dull' and 'boring' at the start of the film. He adopts the child (or, more likely, she miscarries it, as a result of drug abuse, which leads to the climactic moment of despairing clarity that lets her turn her life around), and the two of them live happily ever after in the loving arms of Jesus.

Mind you, though this all sounds ridiculous to us lib'rals, a good writer, good director, and good cast can make these seemingly laughable conservative stereotypes live and breathe, and seem sympathetic. They can bury the obvious agenda deep enough that it won't immediately offend, much like the glaring Pro Life agenda in THE ISLAND was disguised by plenty of action and some T&A. In fact, with slick enough production values and enough talent in front of and behind the camera, this particular movie -- INTO THE LIGHT? FAITH AND GLORY? FEAR NO EVIL? THAT PERFECT LOVE? Something like that -- could cop a few Oscars. Hell, I can see a young Sissy Spacek in the lead...

  4. I could sell that move in a heartbeat.

My circuitous syntax was reffering to the fact that the Apuzzo riff began as part of something else, but distracted me. That something else -- the longer essay on movies -- will arrive later.

  5. Didn't Libertass just have it's annual "Festival"? Lets go check their website...

...Whoops, looks like it was in October. WTF? The guy has Orson Welles pics up everywhere. Was Wells an unhinged booger-eating moron like Aputzo? Does anybody still control his likeness rights?

What's the deal with all the sub-30 minute films these idiots make? Can't anybody write ninety pages on the horror of the white man being held down by the white man!

Well it looks like Jason has jumped into bed with Pajama-load Media, so he can suck down some of that sweet, sweet wingnut foundation money before the rest of the brown-people haters finish it off.

I really don't see how the passion can be considered an 'indie' film, considering both the size of its budget and the fact that an a-list star both directed and starred in it. What definition of 'indie' are you using here?

    ReplyDelete
  8. Surely "not backed by a major studio" is the only valid definition of indie (in movies). Write your own definition of "major", I suppose. Dunno if this even applies to The Passion Of Christ, but surely that's the canonical meaning.

  9. Just swinging by. Wanted to note, the movie clean gene and you want to sell is, largely, TENDER MERCIES. And I'm pretty sure it won an Oscar or two back in the 80s. Excellent film, one of my favorites, and extremely, extremely conservative in its morality.

Jesus Christ (and I mean it) have you watched the Passion? A truly disgusting blood and gore fest, with artfull special effects like the sound of flesh being torn, squirty blood and bile, a prolonged and loving depiction of a crow removing the eye of the living Christ. The Passion was a steaming pile of audience manipulation horror. I thought blood sacrifice was out of style.

Far from it. Welles was fucked over by idiots like that his whole life. Aside from the War of the Worlds radio broadcast infamy it's good to remember that while still in his twenties he put on an all black cast version of Macbeth in Harlem, took his later shows directly to the audience when the unions were against him and wasn't afraid of making powerful enemies.

William Randolph Hearst did his best to try and kill Citizen Kane (Rosebud was the nickname for his favourite squeeze's clit) but Welles won that battle. Later he was suckered out of the country after shooting The Magnificent Ambersons leaving the powers-that-be to fuck up the edit of his movie and destroy the original.

Hoover and McCarthy both had Welles pegged as a commie which was one of the reasons he spent so much time in Europe where he ended up doing crappy adverts and voicing Manowar albums along with the Transformers movie (which brings us neatly back to John).

If the one man show ROSEBUD ever makes it to your neck of the woods try and see it. It's an eye opener.

  12. I have to agree with Tom on the "Jesus Chainsaw Massacre".

It was designed to give Christians' martyr gland a stiff workout. (Not that a lot of them needed it, since The Gays and us secularists are constantly oppressing them and keeping them from openly practicing their religion.)

"(or, more likely, she miscarries it, as a result of drug abuse, which leads to the climactic moment of despairing clarity that lets her turn her life around)"

Thank you, clean gene, for mentioning one of my pet peeves. The "convenient" miscarraige in "conservative values" movies, which allows the woman to make the "morally" correct choice without having to actually deal with any negative consequences. (Hey, it's George Bush's foreign policy).

Miscarraiges can be brutal. I know a woman (one of the most pro-abortion women I know) who miscarried after her second child. She was devestated. No moral clarity. No life-changing event. Just tragically sad.

But in movies, it's usually presented as nothing more than a pregnancy false alarm, because it's just a way for the character (and the writer) to avoid coming down on the issue one way or the other.

Pro-Life or Pro-Choice, I don't care, as long as the writer picks a side and deals with it. Or, if the writer must, deals with miscarraige. Don't be lazy.

Actually, after I posted the "Or a romance where a radical bra-burning feminist sees the truth of her hateful, immoral ways and comes to be the loving and obediant wife she secretly yearns to be?" comment, I realized that, minus the "bra-burning feminist part", that that movie has already been made. And I actually thought it was kinda cute.

  15. I've been having a running discussion/spat with LIBERTAS for a few weeks now, on their site and on mine.

I like the idea of their site, too, but I share your bewilderment at the sheer lack of knowledge they have about the industry.

But don't try telling them that. You'll get some smart-ass asking if "you're more of a green eggs n' ham type of guy," and that they all have Ph.D's.

They're pissed off because they wish we'd never left that era.

Good call on Sweet Home Alabama. Another in the same vein (complete with huge culture war implications): Forrest Gump.

They even gave Jenny AIDS, fercrissakes. Of course, the baby lives and she dies, which from a paleoconservative point of view is even better.
