Ocean by Ellis

"... flying spaceships really fast. Smacking the bad guys about. This is what it's all about."

Quick reminder -- Warren Ellis' OCEAN is out in trade paperback. Progenitor races, weapons inspectors as heroes, and zero-g gunfights against corporate hacks driven mad by their faulty greed-ware.

This is one of my favorite things the mad pub-crawling bastard has done in, well, ever. In particular I have a massive art-crush on Chris Sprouse and Karl Story. Sprouse doesn't get fancy with the panel layouts, he just draws the hell out of them. Apparently the team went back and fixed a couple unclear panels, added some dialogue so the trade would read a little cleaner. That's value-added, folks.

While issue 6 was a bit of a letdown, this was one of the best things Ellis has ever done. The sheer audacity of the gags, especially the controlled gravity gun fight, blew me away. Everyone that's smart thinks it would make a great movie... but...

Orbiter is the only comic that made me smile so much my face hurt (that's usually saved for the rare film like The Apartment or some moments on The West Wing). In a sea of cynicism and anti-heroes, it's almost more ballsy to be shamelessly optimistic and heartfelt. The ending was beautiful and moving.

Haven't read Orbiter yet (bad me), but Ocean is incredibly good. Like Ennis' old Unknown Soldier mini, one of the few comics I think would work well as a film.

Insert "Ministry of Space". Which would never be made into a film.

Ocean had me until issue #6, which was awful. And I'm offended that, in order for the story to not suck, I'm supposed to go buy the trade and spend more money on it. I'm disappointed that Ellis didn't make it not suck the first time around. It was so good until it went off the rails.

^Ocean probably would make a good film. On the other hand, though, it's already close enough -- 'widescreen' as it was meant to be, and majestic as all hell.

I wonder if Arthur C. Clarke reads this stuff?
