LEVERAGE #503 "The First Contact Job" Question Post
Unbelievably, the #501 post is done and will go up tonight, after tonight's ep airs. So welcome brand shiny new writer Aaron Garcia to his first produced episode, a fine comedic romp, and fire away with the questions, snark and rage.
I am so excited to see tonight's episode. Even just hearing the promo with Parker slowly poking at Eliot and saying, "EeeellllllllllleeeeeeOT" makes me giggle aloud!
I think this is officially my favorite Leverage episode ever.
First, Jonathan Frakes with his third "First Contact", and the second that he's directed. And a "Willy Riker" and a little Riker figurine in Kanack's office... nice touch.
I loved Eliot's characterization for Riker. After this, I'd love to see him as crazy, mumbly guy again.
I'm guessing ET has been on the Hardison/Parker movie night list. And Parker seems happier than she's ever seemed in this story. Dating is working well for her.
So many fangirl giggles. 1) allusions to ET, Riker (ST-TNG), 2) Love the return of "it's a very distinctive sound" 3) "break your friggin clavicle" Eliiot wants to break many body parts this episode 4) Eliot has a sense of sadistic humor - who knew? 5) Sophie sucked away into the void 6) Where is Nate the utter bastard? He will rear his ugly head sometime soon yes? 7) Parker is so sweet. I like how she's grown so much as a person
We got some more insight into Eliot's past. Nate, Hardison, and Parker, while not fleshed out, have been explained somewhat. Sophie hardly at all as well as Eliot. I hope we truly get a backstory and I hope Baldwin is a big part of it.
Once again, a fun con. I hated seeing :55 show on the clock.
Well, THAT was fun. It's not like I wasn't a dedicated viewer before, but now you've got me taking notes so I don't forget any of the points for the comments! Here we go - first, the questions, then some observations.
1. Why would Kanack confine his search for a satellite provider to the Portland area? If he needed something shipped in a hurry, it could come same-day from most places in the U.S. If he needed an expert, all he had to do was contact one. 2. Agents Fix and Kelsey - were those references to the Star Trek second pilot Where No Man Has Gone Before, which guest-starred Paul Fix and had a character names Kelso? Seems like a stretch, so maybe I'm missing something. 3. Wasn't it uncharacteristic of Nate to assume that money was what the victim wanted? Until now, Nate has been reluctant to help someone until he heard them express the right motivation. Certainly, it reinforced the "listen" message of the ep, but it seemed forced. 4. The rain toward the end was certainly visible, even unlit. And then you used it to great effect in the tag. Was that in the script, or was the rain worked in since a few shots couldn't hide it? 5. In the "seriously" column: Caught the Riker reference on screen, and then you had to make it Willie Riker? And the MIB "We make this look good" - seriously? 6. Since when does ELIOT drink (or ask for) orange soda?? 7. The two good ol' boys song was hysterical, particularly with the falsetto! So was "Break your friggin' clavicle" - in character! 8. Certainly brought new meaning to the phrase "Boots on the ground". 9. And finally, best line: "It's perfectly safe... (long pause) -ish." That needs a T-shirt! 10. Coda: I've been praising Joe LoDuca's scores for some time, but tonight's was extra-special. He just keeps knocking 'em out of the spaceship - er, park!
Maybe I missed something, I usually do, but have no DVR or Tivo to rewatch:(... Anyway, why did you send Eliot in as the computer guy and Hardison as the MIB? Obviously Hardison filled out the tall, dark and threatening suit well, but Eliot as the nerd? Unbelievable to me, even if Hardison was whispering in his ear the whole time.
Also, the device on the back of Kanack's suit was obvious from the beginning...why didn't any of his goons see it and remark about it?
Don't get me wrong, I absolutely LOVE Leverage and support everyone wholeheartedly, but this ep seemed a little forced and off the wall.
Okay, I want a Parker/Hardison wedding, and I want cute little Parker/Hardison babies who can hang upside down from the ceiling while hacking a computer. I can't help it, they're just so freakin' adorable! He made stars for her!!
I'm really wondering what Nate meant by "What happens when eventually comes too late?" Loved the episode. I'm already watching it again :D Love the show and please give us a 6th Season.
The real question from Eliot's "You never know when you might have to fight an alien" is "Has Eliot already fought aliens?" I'm thinking yes... when he went through the Stargate. ;)
Great episode, Im not gonna lie, love me some Parker/Hardison ,there so fun, silly, but romantic at the same time! great chemistry with the whole cast and love the duet, PRICELESS!!
No questions yet, just have to say this may be one of the funniest Leverage eps I've ever seen. The references, the guys singing in the van...we spent a lot of time laughing right out loud.
Great episode tonight, just one question...was the reporter in the front row with the Bow tie deliberately dressed as the 11th Doctor or was that just a coincidence?
@SueN: I was thinking the same thing! Actually, I was hoping that somehow it was PLANNED that it would coincide, but alas, I don't think the TV industry really works like that!
Through the first three eps this year, Leverage continues to knock it out of the park.
There is a gnawing concern of mine, however. Parker and Hardison are tremendously happy, Nate and Sophie are very happy with each other, Eliot is...well, he's Eliot and single (you do the mental gymnastics). They have been able to shed anyone who is hunting for them from their Boston escapades...
I almost get the feeling that Nate is doing some of these things on purpose. Like having Parker come up with the plan to get Rising's secret money and now "not listening" to see if Sophie listened.
It seems more like he's secretly testing them.
And the whole brew pub and theater are soo staged by Nate and/or Hardison.
You guys must have been laughing your butts off during the writing and filming of this show. Absolutely HYSTERICAL!!! I'll have to watch multiple times to get all the sci-fi references. KUDOS for a great episode! :D
LOVED tonight's episode and Aaron Denius did a superb job. My questions are: 1) whose idea was it to name Eliot's alias Willie Riker (coincidence that Jonathan Frakes was direction this one?) 2) will we see more of Eliot grifting this year? Also, in the answers to 501 you said we met the big bad in the last minute...wasn't that just Hardison & Nate talking? Are you saying one of them is the big bad, or did I miss something?
'Fraid that Nate seemed to be suffering from Dr. Evil syndrome with respect to giving the victim one million bucks, as in his situation that's really not a fantastic amount. As noted, his rep's been ruined such that he can't get work in his field. So say he's 30. He needs to plan for that million to last 60 years until he's 90.
Did I say million? Let's be generous and assume he lives over the state border in Vancouver, WA, which has no income tax (unlike Oregon). So he'll get to keep around $700K of it post-taxes.So that's about $12,000 a year to make it to 90. Assuming he usually makes $80-100K a year (which might be low), that's pretty small for him. To make something in the same neighborhood as his salary by investing, 10+% a year, every year...after taxes and inflation. Really, to not reduce his standard of living and let him reasonably safely not work the rest of his life, It should've been a lot closer to $5million.
Like everyone else I loved this show!! But am I the only one who thought that bad guys name Kanack was awfully close to Kaniacs. Phonetically speaking that is, I’m just saying.
This was the most fun episode in quite some time, I thought. Sophie and Eliot were especially good with their techie characters.
1. How many people in the world besides Parker can poke Eliot in the face and not be rewarded with pain?
2. This might have been asked before, but... do any of the team members know Parker's real, full name? Even Hardison?
3. Pardison is indeed adorable, but... Parker does have some emotional problems which should make a serious relationship challenging. We haven't really seen anything but the cuteness yet. Is there a rocky road ahead, or has Parker truly grown out of her issues?
4. I know during the Alien Abduction scene, the team was counting on Kanack being too freaked out to act logically. But what did they plan to do if he'd had the presence of mind to check Eliot/Willy's pulse after his death scene?
5. One thing that surprised me was the reaction of the press to Kanack's final press conference. I would think if a prominent wunderkind inventor/CEO had what appeared to be a schizophrenic break right in front of their cameras, the last thing they'd do is get up and file out of the room. No way they'd pass up a viral video like that.
"I guess ST:TNG didn't air in the Leverage-verse..."
Of course it did. Hardison gave him the ID, there was a little Next Gen figure in Kanack's office, and then there's Khaos last year saying that he wanted Sophie dressed as Councellor Troi.
Kanack was just so distracted by his dream come true that he didn't question it.
Best episode since The Boys' Night Out Job! I have enjoyed the episodes in between, but this has been the first to make me squee since then. Any chance the chase song is gonna make it to iTunes? I'd buy it!
Hey just watched the episode really enjoyed it. Little surprised that Nate didn't quite get what the victim was in the mood for since HE of all people should be familiar with the concept of how sometimes in life it's not about how much you get paid, it's about the satisfaction that comes with a job well done.
Also I'm pretty sure in the very opening he mentions how he'll get the money back and see to it that the Mark is destroyed, so it's weird that the first plan only seems to rob a million bucks from the guy without actively destroying him.
There was one other weird thing that I noticed that probably had to happen because otherwise it would have got in the way of the fun train, but if the team was going for maximum efficiency, wouldn't it have made more sense to have had Parker and Hardison set up the signal with Elliot already at the RV/Trailer where they were going to have their blog post be linked to so that they wouldn't need to worry about racing Elliot there before the Mark arrived?
One final thought... how come you guys didn't use a version of Hardison's mix tape that had a recording of Hardison and Elliot singing over the music? That would have been extra hilarious in my opinion.
First off, this is probably my favorite episode of the series now, it was all pitch-perfect! Kudos to the cast and crew!
One question though, when the Mooks are taking Eliot away in a hood, in the background a man in a suit and dark sunglasses pokes out from behind the trailer. At first I thought this was going to be an actual government agent who would throw a wrench into the team's plans, but then he's never referenced again in the episode. What's the deal there? Was something cut, or was he just part of Kenickie's goon squad?
Just one for ya: how does Kanack going insane on national television invalidate his having patented the victim's invention?
As far as anyone getting "Willie Riker", I like to think the Leverage team's skill somehow overrides anyone actually identifying their cover IDs, unless the person doing so is truly badass on par with the team (It's happened like once IIRC, in the 'Murder Mystery Party' episode)
Loved this episode. It was funny and fantastic and everything I like to see from a good Leverage episode. The con was great, the bad guy was perfectly hateable, the team was perfect, and I understood everything that was going on. With the hockey episode last week, I was a little lost, because I don't watch hockey at all, but this was ALIENS and it was fantastic.
The van chase music had me actually laughing out loud. It was fun. I loved how Eliot was all reluctant at first but seemed to get into it, and halfway through the second verse, I turned to my mom and said, "They DO realize the rest of the team can hear them, right?" Imagining Nate's face listening to the singing made me laugh.
Anyway, great episode, no questions, just tons of kudos and eager anticipation for the next episode.
OK, settle an argument: Marvin as in Marvin the Martian or Marvin as in Marvin the robot in "Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy." I say Marvin the Martian because he's always outsmarted by Bugs Bunny.
Loved the episode!! One of my all time favorites I think! My question has already been asked: I was wondering who the guy in the man in black get up was when they were taking away Eliot? Loved Parker and the fact she was so into Aliens! We need to see more or CK grifting - we love the fights but he was so good - I don't tuning I've never heard him talk so much ever!
Sorry about the typos from before. I have another question, Parker cloned the marks phone when they were introducing themselves as agents. (loved them as man in black!) did they ever use the cloning of the phone, was it cut out? Or you did it just to sow that you normally do stuff like that?
Amazing job!!!! Loved the 'very distinctive static' and Eliot's team scrubbing the logo when they go fishing for fish!!!
One question, what did Eliot give to Sophie when she was breaking the code in Kanack's office? I was waiting for a flashback on that for the rest of the episode.
This was so funny! Just a couple of questions for now: 1. Was Eliot fighting in character? I loved it. 2. How did you do the thing with Sophie getting sucked away? It was pretty epic. 3. Was Eliot mocking/imitating/otherwise poking fun at Hardison when he asked for orange soda? 3a. Did he ever get the orange soda? I didn't see it anywhere.
I must just not be on the same page with everyone else this week. I certainly enjoyed the episode and it was a fun one to watch, however it just seemed ... off. The pacing or something just didn't seem to work for me.
The biggest question I have is what is up with Nate's characterization? It seems very out of left-field that he can't read a client and know what he needs/wants. Was this originally later in the run that there would be some build-up in other episodes of Nate acting this way and not listening to people?
Nate doesn't always communicate, but he does listen.
I'm also wondering if this episode was running a bit short; some scenes felt like they went on for longer than necessary for the story.
I loved this episode. I laughed so much, anf the con was brilliant. I have a couple of questions that are less about this particular episode and more about your plans for the season. 1) Will we finally meet any of the relatives you've hinted at in the past, such as Nate's sister, Elliot's nephew, or Hardison's Nana? I personally would love to see Nana meet Archie Leach. 2) I love the cons with the really outrageous personas, such as Sophie's Nadia. Could you gove a hint of some of the characterizations coming down the pipe, without spoiling?
"Where are *taps fingers* and *whistles & makes 'crazy sign'?" LOL! Favorite line ever!
Parker says the sweetest things: "You're swimming in like a million of those dust mite things and you can't even feel them, can you?"
"E-li-ot" and "Ouuuuch" rofl! And then "I'll be right here" - Awwwww
Smart Eliot! Love it!
Orange soda - Eliot making fun of Hardison?
O'Neil - Stargate!
The client's name: Oren from Oren Peli, the director of the new Area 51 movie, and Metz from Melinda Metz, author of the Roswell High books (the show Roswell as based on them)? Google is awesome. Just tell me if I'm right, or if you picked those names at random.
So...Shouldn't Parker and Hardison's MIB names be Agents Eff and Aitch if their aliases are Figgs and Higgins(sp)? Hmm...
Bosley? As in...Charlie's Angels? Kojak!
Ooh! Death scene! Sophie must have been so excited for Eliot. Has Hardison had a death scene yet? I can't seem to recall. Parker has had 2, Sophie has had 2 and an abduction, and Eliot's had 2, too. Nate...none?
Eliot's fight reminded me of Parker in the first episode when she did a flip off the edge of the desk and caught the rolling pencil before it hit the ground.
@ Anonymous: I'm gonna go with Marvin the Martian because of Parker's doing his voice later on in the ep. "Earth to Nate."
@ Ally: Yes, he got his orange soda - and drank like half of it, too! You can see the bottle when they show the "abduction" with the boots.
Shelley, I don't know if it means anything characterisation-wise, but these episodes are not airing in order. The premiere was episode 1, the hockey episode was episode 4, and this last one was episode 6. The behaviour of the characters will probably make more sense once the seasons is over and the episodes are watched in order.
I have to second Shelleys opinion ... Nate is acting more than a bit strange lately ...
- Trying to be romantic (when he tells Sophie in #501 he used that scam because she used it the year they met)
- (Apparently) Not noticing what Hardison had done to his watch ... and that from the guy who realized first that the bank was being robbed and caught the cooler swap at the airport ...
- Throwing punches left right and center (Roemer, Reising, the guy who tried to grab Sophie - I had to think really hard to come up with three times he got rough during all of the first four seasons)
- And whats with the "simple" and "straightforward" plans lately? (OK, that could be due to the "laying low", but still ...)
I can only assume that he's preoccupied with something, and I'm pretty sure it has something to do with what him and Hardison are secretly doing. And I really don't trust the peace and love all around, I think this is the calm before a huge storm ...
Parker and Hardison are one of my favorite things about this new season, and I am delighted at how you are handling them, in such a sweet and adorable way. Having said that, I have to ask: Are they living together at the HQ?
Also I spent the entire episode expecting a Doctor Who reference so I must ask if the reporter in a bow tie was in any way intentional.
And because it's my first time commenting, I have to thank you for taking the time to keep this blog and connect with the fans. It's great to learn more about the making of the episodes and it certainly makes us feel more a part of it.
I'm sorry this isn't related to tonight's ep, but I recommended your wonderful show to an Aussie friend who rushed out and bought the dvds (having missed them on TV there). Sadly it appears none of the Australian DVDs have any of the commentaries or special features (and we googled the hell out of it to check). Not sure if this is the same with other international releases, but do you and or Dean have any pull or influence this? (of course I could always encourage my international friends to flout licensing arrangements and just buy from amazon...) You are sooooo generous to your fans and the highly entertaining commentaries (as well as this blog) are some of what elevate it above other shows.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/08/07/wells-fargo-yovany-gonzalez_n_1751461.html?utm_hp_ref=mostpopular I thought I might show this as an amazingly disgusting form of life imitating art.
With that episode almost permanently scrambling my brain into incoherent fangirl thoughts, I did manage to come up with a question or two...
1. How are the episodes' directors chosen (like Frakes directing the scifi episode)? 2. Was the epic chase music duet a shout out to The Dukes of Hazzard?
@G "I'm still waiting for the Fiasco episode in Leverage, John."
I have a horrible sinking feeling that he's saving that for the season finale. After all, what could get dirty looks from the crew more than 'things go horribly, horribly wrong (and end badly)for everyone'?
Nate Ford is a very bad man... I wonder where he gets it from, Mr. "You. Will. Cry." Hmmm?
Just promise that you haven't broken your word -- if it's the end, it's emotionally satisfying (if painful) and if it's not, you have a back door or a trap door or some kind of rocket-pack you can use to escape. Please.
This is the only show my dad and I can stand to watch together. For that alone, it is magic.
BEST EPISODE! Thanks for consistently giving us the best show on TV! My questions are: 1) the guy in the black suit hiding behind the van when Willy was taken, Hardison saw him but said nothing...what's with that? Is it to do with the conversation Nate & Hardison had at the end of 501? 2) Was Eliot asking for an orange soda because he likes it, or was it a dig at Hardison? 3) Will be be seeing more of Eliot the grifter this season? Thanks!
First of all, I am loving the new season. The cons and the character progression for the crew is great! This was my favorite episode so far. I was wondering, though, if this season would be the season that we finally meet someone from Hardison's past (Nana, hacker/online buddy, etc)? We've seen QUITE a few people from Nate's past, Sophie's past, Eliot's past (with the next episode and this season's Vance character adding to the number) and even Archie from Parker's past, but no one from Hardison's. Will we see someone this season, or will we have to go to TNT with cap in hand for another season before Nana or anyone else from pre-Leverage Hardison pops up asking for help or something? Nothing major, I was just watching season 1 again and realized that you meet (or see in flashbacks) quite a few people from everyone else's past, with the exception being Hardison.
Just a question... why would aliens use a decimal numerical system? (pi would look really different in a different numerical system). Do they also have 10 fingers/digits?
Do you know something we don't know?
p/s loved the Tesla reference... for those who knows his story, Edison was an utter bastard that should have been taken down by the Leverage team if they were around 100 years ago.
@martianunlimited: why would aliens use a decimal numerical system?
The transmission would have been in binary; we saw the translation into decimal. Of course, that requires an assumption about how many bits to a character, but if you assume that it's a power of two (see: binary), then you run out of options pretty quickly.
@chelseaNH that wouldn't work.. pi in binary is 11.00100100001111110110101010001000100001011010001100001000110100 110001001100011001100010100010111000000011011100000111001101000
you won't recognize 3.1415926536 from there especially if it's sent as 3._4_5_2_5_6
The "aliens" also referenced Aztec symbols. So either they know something about human culture or they're looking for people with common references, like counting by 10s. (Although the Aztecs used base 20.)
People look for reasons to believe what they want to believe. Kanack wanted to believe he'd made first contact, so he wouldn't be looking for clues that the message was a fake.
Drake's Equation, military satellite static - I love when Eliot lets out his inner smartie pants. I think you told us once that Eliot enlisted; he didn't go to one of the military academies. Why? Someone that sharp could easily have become an officer if he wanted, so I assume he wanted something else out of his military career? And I adore Willie Riker but I'm baffled. Can you explain how when Eliot wears that beanie, he is smoking, but on Willie that exact same hat is total goober? Special effects?
I've been without a computer for over a month and it turns out it was this blog that I missed the most.
I came to this episode with a bit of reseveration - there's just so much that could have gone all dumb & cheesy with a plot like this - but that was not the case. What was interesting was the peaks of the whistles - all the elements and the plot points fell into a very natural (and, therefore, satisfying) pattern.
I particularly enjoyed the Willie Riker character - the mixture of paranoid, slightly drunk/stoned, but brilliant-codebreaker hick was masterful. And the rarity of Eliot getting to spend that much time emmerced in one character made it a particular treat.
Like a few other people, I'm particularly curious about the man in black who was lurking outside Willie's house! I am hoping he's somehow part of whatever it is that Nate & Hardison are secretly doing.
But, that leads me to wonder... Someone commented that this is actually episode #6 - did you intend it to air (this much) out of order? And, if not, do you think that this could negatively impact the buildup of tension leading up to the season finale or decrease the number of people who catch the little hints relating to the over-arcing theme of the season?
Thanks again for this blog - it really adds to the experience and my enjoyment of this show!
Forgive me, but I REALLY want to know the sauce on the MiB names. Is it Fix and Kelsey? I know he's had Detectives Moffat and Davies, which is a Who reference, so I'm wondering if I'm just unfamiliar with this joke. T^T Anyone?! And yeah, Willie Riker. Had to pause and crack up on that one. (And the '4o's Tony Stark' from the week before lol)
So, congratulations on finally being able to de-sexify Kane (although he was hilarious)! And I love the Kanack name screw ups--nice throwback to The Boiler Room Job.
Question: Was Nate really okay handing over their client to another big bad at the end? Maybe it's just the vicious cycle of conglomerates....
Observations, theories and questions, yes I’m a dork and I numbered them all. And this is Part 1... O1) Actually for me, it doesn't seem that out of character with Nate to miss what a client really needs. He's been doing this for four years or so, he's seen innumerable people and they all end up with what they want PLUS money (just to help them out). Even Robin Hood can get a little jaded and unfocused and think "Hey, this guy made something, it got stolen, didn't get the profits - he wants his stuff and money. Cool, easy job." His mind has already moved on to the job. I think that’s the approaching problem of the season. Caring is hard and taking action for what you care about is even harder, because it makes you see all the other things there are to do in the world. For the people you help, you’re amazing. For you, there’s just another name on the list. How long can you sustain an endeavor like this? Is it like holding your finger in the dam? Also, it feels like Nate’s prepping something in the background and only about half of his brain is dedicated to the con… which considering Nate’s brain is. Terrifying. Punctuation completely on purpose. Q1)Eliot’s symbols for “Hardison” (type-y fingers) and Parker (crazy + whistle) = hilarious. Whose idea? Q2) Is Hardison ever going to learn to pick a lock? Like in a decent amount of time? And did Parker know about the real key and just con Hardison? Q3)What was the image that clued everyone in that he was looking for extraterrestrial life? I can see it but I can’t identify it? Q4) Which dance was Hardison trying to get Eliot to do? It looked like the Electric Slide for a minute until the hop…? Q5) Did Sophie just like being one up on Nate the whole time and that’s why she didn’t try harder to tell him about the problem with the client? Q6) Did the Men in Black figure out it was just a big con (the guy behind the trailer) or was he just a throw in? Q7)HOW DID HE MISS WILLIE RIKER? After hearing it repeated six billion times I had to ask…and then I realized that Jonathan Frakes directed. Never mind. Q8)How long did it take you to realize all the inherent ET/Eliot jokes?
O4/T1) Something that will come up in a later episode, everyone’s got a thing they’re doing in Portland, Eliot’s got food, Hardison has his gadgets and will be happy anywhere there is Parker, orange soda and something to play with - namely with an operating system, Sophie has her theater, Nate and Parker are very similar in they don’t have much outside of the job. Parker has Hardison who would help her find something outside of the con if they had time, I think (and no spoilers as to who actually helps her later). Nate could find something outside of the burning righteousness of his fury – but the thing is I’m not really seeing that burn to get the bad guy anymore. It’s seems like it’s becoming more like a job and the burn is focused elsewhere which is scary. A) I guess my basic observation/theory is that the jobs are seeming more like something Nate is doing to take him mind off of something bigger, i.e the way he use to play chess during a job. Now the jobs are his chess while something much bigger is in the works. (P.S. Maybe why he missed that huge glaring fact of the episode.) B) Everyone is slowly getting a straight job sideline/passion which may foreshadow lack of heistiness in the future due to A.
Q9)Did the first check go into the victim pile or to Sophie? Q10) How much fun did Kane have being Willie Riker? O5/Q11)Why was Parker surprised at the “getting the reputation back” thing? They’ve done that before with Monica Hunter… Q12) How many people did Eliot end up beating up? Those were a lot of pairs of shoes… Q13)Could the crowd spot the speaker on his back or just assume Karnack was nuts? Q14) Did the airplane company just not care that Karnack had the plans or just not want to deal with the publicly crazy man? Private crazy guy vs. public crazy guy? Q15) Why didn’t Parker and Hardison join in the gloat? Everyone had fun freaking Karnack out, especially Nate with that cocked puppy look. Where were Type-y and Crazy?
Was that gigantic, obvious tracking device put on the guys back a Star Trek (Undiscovered Country?) reference?
Loved the idea with the boots, but where did they get them all? Obviously two pairs from the goons that attacked Eliot but what about the other sets?
I'll never get tired of Eliots "It's a distinctive *insert weird, abstract thing here" lines. Also, I had that little song Eliot and Hardison sang in the van in my head for hours after the show.
Do you guys ever hang out with/run into the other guys filming in Portland (Grimm and Portlandia)? I have this funny image in my head of a shot of the Leverage crew walking down the street and a stray werewolf runs across the screen in the distance behind them, Nate accidentally bumping into Fred Armisen as he walks by and keeps going like nothing is amiss.
Nice share! Thanks a lot for such a lovely blog posting this time around as well. Seriously, your collection of thoughts and ideas compiled together in a single detailed verse makes me want to come back for more.idateasia review

Can't wait for tonights episode! We're hoping that we are going to get renewed for a sixth season (fingers crossed)
I am so excited to see tonight's episode. Even just hearing the promo with Parker slowly poking at Eliot and saying, "EeeellllllllllleeeeeeOT" makes me giggle aloud!
Can I just say how sweet it is that this ep airs the same day the Mars Rover lands? Clearly the universe is a Leverage fan. ;)
Willie Riker!!
I am in hysterics!!! Cann...not stop laughing!!!!
No questions. Just comments.
Willie Riker, orange soda, and Eliot knowing the Drake equation on his own - Excellent!
I hope Nate's learning.
So many fangirl giggles.
1) allusions to ET, Riker (ST-TNG),
2) Love the return of "it's a very distinctive sound"
3) "break your friggin clavicle" Eliiot wants to break many body parts this episode
4) Eliot has a sense of sadistic humor - who knew?
5) Sophie sucked away into the void
6) Where is Nate the utter bastard? He will rear his ugly head sometime soon yes?
7) Parker is so sweet. I like how she's grown so much as a person
We got some more insight into Eliot's past. Nate, Hardison, and Parker, while not fleshed out, have been explained somewhat. Sophie hardly at all as well as Eliot. I hope we truly get a backstory and I hope Baldwin is a big part of it.
Once again, a fun con. I hated seeing :55 show on the clock.
See you next week!
Oh, was the TARDIS sound mixed into the noise coming from the small speaker on Cannuk's Back?
And I'd love it if Joe LoDuca and Christian Kane worked up Hardison's song into a full track.
First of all, kudos to Aaron Denius Garcia for such a great ep, and to Frakes for bringing it to life.
So many things to love:
• All the ET bits. I've been waiting so long for an "E-li-ot" from y'all. ;)
• The return of "it's a very distinctive …" And another hint as to Eliot's background. "When we'd go … fishing. For … fish."
• The "two good ol' boys" duet in the van. I may never get that out of my head.
• The speeding dot. Hardison needs to learn when to run.
• "Willy Riker" FTW! And Kane's mush-mouthed portrayal. Though now I want to meet Lenny …
• Parker and Hardison as MiB. Hardison's right, they *do* make it look good.
• The lovely P/H moment at the end. You wrung a collective "awww!" from my family.
• And Eliot's "you never know when you'll have to fight an alien." Nice call back to "The Morning After Job."
No real questions now, just reveling in the goodness. Thanks for another ride on the fun train!
Okay, I want a Parker/Hardison wedding, and I want cute little Parker/Hardison babies who can hang upside down from the ceiling while hacking a computer. I can't help it, they're just so freakin' adorable! He made stars for her!!
Another great episode tonight. Loved the Eliot/Hardison sing-a-long. Is there anyway that song can be made available on iTunes or something?
I'm loving the growth in the Parker/Hardison relationship so far.
Anyway, keep up the great work Leverage team.
I'm really wondering what Nate meant by "What happens when eventually comes too late?"
Loved the episode. I'm already watching it again :D
Love the show and please give us a 6th Season.
I thought it was awesome! I loved all the references, Willie reicher, Eliot , and more! Great job as always! Love you guys!
Love you guys!
The Stargate mention on the DVDs was awesome. :-)
I loved the entire ep for reasons that everyone else has already mentioned (except for the Stanley Kubrick thing -- excellent).
But I wanted to ask: How less stressful is it now that you guys don't have to worry so much about filming around the weather in Oregon?
I really, really want to see Eliot's "Willy Riker" in a double act with Hardison's "Wade Perkins" from "The Three Days of the Hunter Job."
I still get the feeling Nate is dying. His behaviour is so strange.
Anon @ 7:31: Please don't say that!! It would be the worst. :-( I'd like to think he's just maturing!
Why do I have a bad feeling about this?
Keep it going! One of the only totally entertaining, feel-good shows on the air. TNT must see this!
Fess up, John. Who wrote the "Two ol' Boys" song? Was it a Kane and Hodge improv?
I almost get the feeling that Nate is doing some of these things on purpose. Like having Parker come up with the plan to get Rising's secret money and now "not listening" to see if Sophie listened.
It seems more like he's secretly testing them.
And the whole brew pub and theater are soo staged by Nate and/or Hardison.
A conflict between Willie Riker and a Mr. James K. that is known for a huge ego.
Subtle.
I'm still waiting for the Fiasco episode in Leverage, John.
You guys must have been laughing your butts off during the writing and filming of this show. Absolutely HYSTERICAL!!! I'll have to watch multiple times to get all the sci-fi references. KUDOS for a great episode! :D
I guess ST:TNG didn't air in the Leverage-verse, because I can't imagine a guy like Kanack not cluing into that name.
I wish Marvin had audio, so we could hear him complain about how much work Hardison was making him do.
LOVED the empty boots.
You are the type of motherfucker to make a sad ass ending to this season and then get cancelled. MOTHERFUCKAAAAA
Great episode. Hope nobody's dying.
ChelseaMH said:
"I guess ST:TNG didn't air in the Leverage-verse..."
Of course it did. Hardison gave him the ID, there was a little Next Gen figure in Kanack's office, and then there's Khaos last year saying that he wanted Sophie dressed as Councellor Troi.
Kanack was just so distracted by his dream come true that he didn't question it.
"Two good ol' boys! Behind the wheel..." That's in my head now... Watching the episode over and over again probably doesn't help, but I can't resist!
Best episode since The Boys' Night Out Job! I have enjoyed the episodes in between, but this has been the first to make me squee since then. Any chance the chase song is gonna make it to iTunes? I'd buy it!
mad mad props to first time writer Aaron Denius Garcia! Well done, sir. EXTREMELY well done. I have enjoyed reading your blog about this journey.
Questions/comments to come later in the week.
Can't wait to hear what was scripted and what was improved!
I would have titled this one "The Three Days of the Alien Hunter Job."
Loved the ep!

So at the end with the picnic date, did Parker pack a picnic dinner, or did she annoy Eliot till he made them one?
This is one of the best episodes yet! Loved it! One thing I would like to ask.
Was the fight with Eliot in the office based on some of Jackie Chan's fights?
Maybe it was just me, but I immediately thought of Jackie Chan's fights where he's trying to not break anything while taking out the bad guys.
I was waiting for a flashback on that for the rest of the episode.
great episode! the humor almost made me fall off my seat.. 2 questions for you, John:
1)who composed the "two ol' boys.." song? (it super duper catchy..)
2)Eliot likes orange soda now or was it just part of his character, Ryker?
Not really related to the episode, but...
http://solidsmack.com/fabrication/hack-a-hand-cuff-key-and-3d-print-your-daring-escape/
^ would Hardison ever use a technique like this when Parker could just pick the lock?
This was so funny! Just a couple of questions for now:
Follow-up questions!
1. Do we have Joe LoDuca to thank for the Eliot/Hardison singalong? That seriously made my day.
2. Renewal yet???????
Are y'all ever gonna show Hardison and Parker kissing? Did they show it and I just looked away at the wrong time?
Whoops, I forgot about the season premiere, didn't I? 1 fake death for Hardison.
Michelle,
Thanks for the heads up that we're out-of-order with the episodes again. Hopefully things will make more sense on DVD.
(of course I could always encourage my international friends to flout licensing arrangements and just buy from amazon...)
You are sooooo generous to your fans and the highly entertaining commentaries (as well as this blog) are some of what elevate it above other shows.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/08/07/wells-fargo-yovany-gonzalez_n_1751461.html?utm_hp_ref=mostpopular I thought I might show this as an amazingly disgusting form of life imitating art.
@chelseaNH that wouldn't work.. pi in binary is
11.00100100001111110110101010001000100001011010001100001000110100
110001001100011001100010100010111000000011011100000111001101000
you won't recognize 3.1415926536
from there especially if it's sent as 3._4_5_2_5_6
The "aliens" also referenced Aztec symbols.
Loved episode..was the safe..ish line a nod to Dean? You mentioned that on the commentaries for season 3
I'm surprised that I seem to be the only one who thinks Willy Ryker's friend Lenney happened to have the last name of Nemoy.
Part 2...again, I'm a dork.
(P.S. Maybe why he missed that huge glaring fact of the episode.)
B) Everyone is slowly getting a straight job sideline/passion which may foreshadow lack of heistiness in the future due to A.
Q9)Did the first check go into the victim pile or to Sophie?
Q10) How much fun did Kane have being Willie Riker?
O5/Q11)Why was Parker surprised at the “getting the reputation back” thing? They’ve done that before with Monica Hunter…
Q12) How many people did Eliot end up beating up? Those were a lot of pairs of shoes…
Q13)Could the crowd spot the speaker on his back or just assume Karnack was nuts?
