LEVERAGE #501 "The (Very) Big Bird Job" Question Post
Yes, yes, we're way behind. It got a little ... crazy. But we're six days away from wrapping Season 5, so I should be able to catch up forthwith. In the meantime -- scream, vent, and nitpick to your heart's content in the Comments as always.

SEASON 6....SEASON 6!!! I will officially quit watching TV FOREVER if we don't get a season 6!!
Yeah, Unfortunately we can scream and cry and threaten to our hearts content, but the Powers That Be at TNT for some reason, even though Leverage has PROVEN itself to be more than an Power in and of itself, have decided to stop supporting their once golden show. It has nothing to do with the fans, and everything to do with the money. Though the fans still give up the hue and cry and watch fervently, waiting on pins and needles for the next episode and gobble up everything they can on DVD and the interwebs, TNT will unfortunately decide that there is not enough 'profit', and leave yet another diamond in the dirt. TNT, if you're reading this, PLEASE PROVE ME WRONG!
Welcome back! I have been waiting for this date since season 4 finale. I look forward to new episodes and hope TPTB at TNT realize how much we support and love your efforts. And in 30...29...minutes
Only 9 mins in and it's awesomely smooth! TNT are a bunch of idiots if they don't renew for season 6, or as long as Rogers/Devlin have great ideas and produce the best show on. Maybe another station could pick up Leverage if TNT is dumb enough to let them go.
He's never going to catch up. And frankly, that's a good thing, means he's bus MAKING stuff. They guy in the museum that isn't Wesley, he a local big wig?
Episode specifics aside, iTunes released episode 1 early (I have the season pass) was that a glitch/one time thing or was it negotiated that this season will be released same day (since most of the stuff I have gotten off iTunes has been day after air).
Corollary, how does iTunes sales influence TNT's decision to renew?
1. Can you explain a little further how Cary Elwes' character can buy the Spruce Goose when the museum owns it?
2. Not directly related to the episode but what are your go-to news sites for bad guys/story lines?
And I second the answering of the question about the cliffhanger being dragged out for the whole season. Please say we'll find out the answer soon! Can't wait until next week!!
Loved it. 1. Hardison putting up with Parker's idea of fun 2. the app 3. Eliot has his car back (did he steal the pink slip from Hardison? 4. How soon before we meet the Big Bad? 5. Our favorite Feds were too busy to come to Portland? How sad. McSweetie will be sad about Parker not being very available 6. Last minute made me think about what might have happened between Pilot and The Homecoming Job 7. Will we see Eliot's friend again later this year? The one who he was doing an outside job with?
It appears the series is now firmly on the satire track, and I'll just need to get used to that. Accepting that, it was a fun show, and a better season opener than last year IMHO. Here are the questions - nothing particularly significant, just curious.
1. Was Adam Baldwin playing John Casey from Chuck, or was his character nameless? WONDERFUL cameo!
2. What behavior between Sophie and Nate gave the widow a clue about their relationship? In their scenes together, I didn't notice anything particularly indicative of a relationship.
As for that final scene, I'd been under the impression that the show had been renewed for Season 5 AND Season 6. Has that changed, or are we being played with? Or does "All good things must come to an end" have nothing whatsoever to do with the show's renewal or continuation?
Have a good season! Looking forward to the return of blogs; I've been checking for new posts since May (actually, several months before that).
One question: 1) Since the moving of Portland was kind of sprung upon the team (mostly Sophie) will we ever find out if Nate and Sophie buy an apartment? But beside that Sophie with a gun is always awesome! I REALLY hope TNT isn't stupid and doesn't renew you guys for a sixth season. You are the only show I watch nowadays and I would be so sad if it got cancelled. I'm hoping we find out more about this secret and maybe a scene where Sophie gets angry for him keeping a secret! Lovely return to the show though and I can't wait for more!!
I would LOVE to see more of Adam Baldwin. Will we see more of him in the season? Loved Eliot's line: "I don't remember you being that tall" as the elevator doors close. It was funny and nicely played.
Loved the show tonight. Having had a family that was in the air craft industry it was fun seeing the crew doing this con. I really hope that this isn't the last season, you guys rock
I haven't seen it yet - I'm on the west coast. Just let me say... John, don't feel bad for not doing as much as you'd like, of something that hardly anyone else in your position does at all! We appreciate whatever you can give us here.
As always, loved the writing. The soft reboot to re-establish characters and their relationships was very well done - especially that Hardison is now accepted as equal by Nate (the symbolism of the glass of whiskey). Using Busey for the name of the main henchman was a wonderful insider gag. The con wasn't too complex to keep new viewers away.
Question I do have though, is how much is the series actually 'owned' by TNT? I had gotten the impression through previous posts and comments that Electric Entertainment owned a lot more of the series and TNT was mostly distribution end. Would you (or other commenters in the know) be willing to expand on that a bit?
Hate to do it but I have to ask...wasn't the Spruce Goose a "flying boat"? It was meant to take off and land on water not a runway, wasn't it? Does it even have landing gear?
Dangit, John. You always say "I'll catch up when we stop shooting," but then you never do. :(
Let me dig up my Leverage Post-Game doc...
I understand and respect that you're a busy guy, and I'm in no way claiming you "owe" us anything. But please please please can you dedicate a weekend to knocking some of these out, or maybe do an old one for every new one you do?
I feel like Hardison made a deal with the devil at the end of this episode. Will Parkers trust/emotional issues come into play when Hardsion reveals the secret him and Nate have been keeping?
Am so jealous of you guys getting to see this season's opener. Am in the UK so won't be able to watch until it airs here. Am hearing rumours that TNT is giving up on the show...please tell me this ain't true and, if so...what can we do about it?
The beginning: How can Nate get back in the water with all the trauma he went through after his brother's accident when he was a teenager?!! Oh wait, was I having a random flashback to one of Tim's old movies again? :P
Was that Adam Baldwin?!!!!!!! Angel reunion! (hehe, height joke!!) IloveyouIloveyouIloveyou!!!!!
Is it just me, or does Aldis' voice sound much deeper than it did last season? It's not just me, right?
Eliot's upset about brewing their own beer and the menu! LOL!
*gasp* No more Alice White? *sad face* But then again, no more Jimmy Papadokalis...that might be a good thing. My eyes will be less sore from his awful choice in suit colors...
Parker's idea of a date, and Hardison going with it - Priceless.
Aww, Eliot and the girl! He's always good with kids/teens. And I bet "Lindsey McDonald" could make sure that her dad gets that email from beyond the grave...
"Tony Stark of the forties" - hehe, love the reference! Was that actually a reverse reference? I seem to remember hearing or reading something like "the modern Howard Hughes" about Stark.
Ooh, Dread Pirate Roberts is so evil! You turned Westley into Prince Humperdink! How could you?!
*giggles* Forget Parker, Sophie has an odd sense of what is romantic.
Hey John Rogers I just wanted to say, your Awesome! Thanks for answering questions, getting that much more Leverage info makes each episode even better.
To folk in general: To let TNT know that they should renew Leverage for ....ohhh.....4 or 5 more seasons, send them a postcard or a letter (you know - on that "paper" stuff, using "stamps" and the "post office") and explain - nicely - why they should do so. The address is:
Turner Broadcasting/ TNT/ Leverage One CNN Center Atlanta, Georgia 30303
They're television PTB; they really don't understand the new-fangled Internet stuff. Polite letters, on the other hand, make a substantial impression. A few thousand of those, and they may realize that their audience actually likes the show...but they really aren't all that bright, so don't scare them with too much technology stuff.
Now - John - That was a great episode. I like seeing them use old tech when it works - why go for more than you need? Naming the henchman "Busey" was frickin' hysterical! and CK's reading of "Give me...the teddy bear" was excellent. It was clear that everyone's reached that point where they're basically so steeped in the delineations of the characters, stories, relationships, etc, that they're now freed by those limits and revel in them. It was like getting to spend an evening with those old friends who have always done the most outrageous things and tell the stories brilliantly.
Okay, correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Rogers say at one point, somewhere way back when, that they saw Leverage running for only five seasons? I couldn't find the exact entry I'm thinking of, but he's also said, "I mean, I'd watch a Jeri Ryan/Alan Smyth show for five seasons" (Bottle Job entry, 2/8/10) and "I could write Gina as Annie Kroy for five seasons" (Ten Lil' Grifters entry, 9/07/11). So the idea of five seasons has been a recurring theme.
Even in the last Leverage q&a Rogers did, the Radio Job, on January 15th, he references the series finale. I kinda assumed with Nate's "All good things must come to an end" line that the plan is for this to be the last season.
I wouldn't mind being wrong, but I also want Leverage to end on a high note.
Absolutely wonderful episode! It just felt right, watching them walk into new digs and having Hardison explain the tech while no one listened. 1) Was that a deliberate call back to The Homecoming Job? The familiarity of that moment was lovely. 2) What's the background scoop on the new office? Is there more than what we've seen? Does anyone live there? 3) Has Hardison really installed a Suggestion Box, and if yes, does anyone but him use it? I would give my right arm for a DVD extra showing the team going through the suggestions in that box. 4) Is Old Nate going to make an appearance in the new space?
Absolutely loved Eliot's caring more about the beer pairings than the new space. 5) CK's comment at the close of the episode that you can't learn how to brew beer online. Was that scripted? Also, his moment with the victim's daughter was lovely.
6) Please tell us other ideas you came up with for the name of the team's beers. Thief Juice? Brilliant.
7) Sophie's constant digs on Portland's weather were great. Any fear of aggravating locals with those? 8) Ooh - speaking of Portland, the outdoor scene of Parker and Sophie - was that filmed the same place the "Don't ask me that Parker" scene was filmed at the end of S3? It sure looked familiar.
That's all I can think of for now - thanks for such a great ep and great show. Life's always better when Leverage is on the air!
I thought this was a great premier. I enjoyed Cary Elwes (you guys always get the best guest stars) and (briefly) Adam Baldwin. I love the relationships between the two couples and Eliot still kicks ass. In a recent review someone mentioned that the show had started to show signs of fatigue. If that premier is any indication of the rest of the season, then I have no idea what this person was talking about.
The different accents, from both Sophie and Hardison, were a highlight, as usual. I love seeing them get into a character. I'm sad to learn all the former aliases are gone for good, though. No more Annie Kroy?? That hurts.
I really only have one question, which I doubt you'll answer. With all the speculation about this being the last season (I hope it's not, btw) along with the comments from you and the cast about how sad the season (series?) finale is, PLUS this secrecy mess with Hardison and Nate....are we in for a heartbreak if this is the last episode? I know the other finales were left hanging a certain way in case the show didn't receive a pickup, so to count we have, 1)the crew going their separate ways for good, 2)Nate being shot and possibly dying, 3)Nate and Sophie ending up in bed, 4)Nate's big plans...So I can totally see how you could end the show with something, i.e. this secrecy stuff, busting the team up for good. I don't want to see that. Please set my mind at ease! I know you won't, but a girl's got to try.If it does end, I want to see people happy. Especially Nate. He deserves it after all he's been through.
Penguin_Lord, you are so right! I was freaking out about the ending, but I'm like, yes, they'll tell us!
Unknown - good call with the symbolism of the whiskey. I got a different vibe between Aldis & Tim in that scene, but I couldn't put my finger on it.
Love the CK teddy bear line and his outrage about the menu, especially when he couldn't believe that wasn't why Sophie was mad.
LOVE pretzels' "vacation," great Adam Baldwin cameo, and love the convo with Nate & Sophie about the theatre (I wonder if we'll get a job there?)
Also, because I am obsessed with this show and the podcast, i think I can shed some light on some of these questions: ~Electric Entertainment does all the producing and TNT distributes. TNT does provide some of the money though. In the most recent podcast, John talks about the money TNT gave for Danny Glover in the Van Gogh Job. ~About John saying 5 seasons, I think that's just his go-to. Chris always says Season 8 - because of a bet he & John have about the 100th episode. ~Also, I vote if TNT is too dumb to renew this show, someplace like ION could pick it up. When CBS stopped airing Flashpoint (another indpendently produced, distribution only deal) ION picked it up, and ION just started airing old episodes. ~Adam Baldwin will be back. Per tvline.com, "The Chuck vet has booked a potentially recurring role on the TNT caper drama, per TVGuide.com, playing a former soldier who now runs a government counter-terrorism unit."
Also, Ian Watson, they don't answer all the questions, but check out the Leverage 10 podcasts - they deal with 4:11-finale and then the writers' room. And they're awesome.
The grift was a little 'meh' for me. It seems like Nate fell into the same trap that Hardison fell into in 'The Gold Job'; crafting an elaborate tale weaving multiple characters into a dramatic and exciting adventure, when they could have just knocked the guy out and kept him stashed somewhere until after the big meeting.
Kudos on the villain this week though. In the beginning, I was legitimately convinced he was a bait-and-switch 'not that bad a guy' villain like the Dad in The Carnival job. The quirks and the plane fetish seemed likeable at first. At least, until the whole 'government sucks, and I'm fine with killing people' rant.
Final note; Sophie's Australian impersonation... as an Australian, really? 'g'day'? Why don't you just offer to throw a shrimp on the barbie and show everyone what a real knife is?
Rogers, you just gave me fangasm with the Adam Baldwin cameo. And then it got better.
There's so much I love about this episode, from all the tiny shout-outs to Portland (including the awesome meta one from Parker) to Sophie's complaining about her hair and the weather, to the costumes (loved Elwes's suits and the fact that here, in Portland, they'd totally go unnoticed/unremarked on) to the brew pub.
And then you go and kill me with that ending. The anxiety and uncertainty! And part of me is extra annoyed at the anxiety and uncertainty over the status of future seasons, because character-wise it's such a great moment for Hardison in particular. It's so great to see the growth of Hardison from where he was in The Mile High Job to where he is right now. And it's also such a nice tension between Hardison and Nate in terms of how they perceive the world and how they think of the con. It's more than a little heartbreaking (in a good way) to see Hardison sort of becoming like Nate, in that he's willing to go along with deceiving the team, especially after he was so angry with Nate for hypnotizing him in The Scheherazade Job.
Just a great season opener over all. I so can't wait for next Sunday.
Add me to the list of people who would love to see the team, or even just Hardison, looking through the suggestion box. I can just picturing Hardison pulling one, reading it and saying "Seriously? Man, that is just WRONG."
I loved last night's episode, well done. The trekkie in me is excited for the First Contact Job episode in a few weeks, especially because it's directed by Frakes. So cool.
Will the opening credits be back for 5.02?
I'd love to see Jeri Ryan again, any chance you could bring Tara back for an episode or two?
Er...glad the series is back, but this episode didn't do it for me. Not that one can't suspend disbelief for a well-crafted con, but the aircraft simulator switcheroo and Cary Elwes CEO's gullibility defied even genre-fiction plausibility. Also, I had a tough time hearing the dialogue; had to crank it way up, and then way down or mute the commercials. That might be a TNT thing, but I think the audio mix was muddier than in previous seasons.
Circling, In regards to your question, 8) Ooh - speaking of Portland, the outdoor scene of Parker and Sophie - was that filmed the same place the "Don't ask me that Parker" scene was filmed at the end of S3? It sure looked familiar. I believe that both were shot in the park blocks downtown. It is a park area one block wide and about ten blocks long.
I've got to chime in about loving the busey being named Busey.
No questions for you, John, just many thanks for another ride on the fun train.
Me again. I forgot to mention that while I had an absolute fangasm about Adam Baldwin (and the Tony Stark line), YOU DIDN'T USE ANY PRINCESS BRIDE QUOTES!!! How could you not, with Cary Elwes as a guest star?
Questions: 1. How long were they away for? I didn't hear it, but I'm interested.
2. Like others, I'm concerned that Old Nate isn't in the new headquarters. Where is he? Why isn't there yet?
3. I like that they are using Leverage, Inc. again, but how come that one wasn't burned?
4. ALL the old aliases were burned? Even the ones that came before the team? (I'm kind of heartbroken that Charlotte Prentice would be burned... and not ready for Annie Kroy or Alice White to be gone either!)
5. I saw on the fermenter that they are brewing an IPA. Is that it? Or do they have a wider selection too? As an aside, what kind of beer would YOU brew? or, what's your favourite beer? (I'm SO hoping for some Maudite or Fin du Monde or Chambly here. :D )
Any particular reason Christian looks directly into the camera when he shakes the bear? Loved this when I saw it at FanCon2, and still loved it the second time around. I have to admit I had forgotten about the teddy bear scene. ROFL!
Oh, I missed you guys... A couple of quick questions: 1. Spruce Goose is an orange box. I researched that. But the National Act thingy of 1966: ledger or orange box? 2. Now that the team is actually in Portland, does Christian have to have his hair flatironed? 3. Did Sophie actually buy/lease the theater? 4. I don't see why they actually have to have an operating restaurant to keep up their cover. 5. Where did Sophie and Hardison get the guns? (probably a really stupid question, considering their line of work...) 6. Who actually put the bomb in Roemer's car? Again, fabulous episode, as always, and loving Season 5 so far!
And for those of us that want to send money your way, any idea when the season pass for the show might be available on Amazon or iTunes? (Don't have cable, really don't want to use less legal methods.)
I understand the move to Portland because that is where you actually film and they were in Boston way too long considering their chosen profession(s), but does that mean no more poker games for the boys? No more Bonanno? And really, there are a few people in the police, FBI, Interpol, as well as other thieves and grifters that know who they really are - did moving really solve that problem?
I forgot to add: I'm surprised Roemer made it into Canada, as I hear those Mounties are scrupulously polite and utterly unstoppable -- maybe even the most feared law enforcement agency on earth.
I'm not worried about the mystery at the end of the episode. Hardison is on board and it's been said many times that he is the moral compass of the show. So, whatever Nate is planning, it has to be for the good of the team, even if they may not be happy about it..... Or....... Nate lied to Hardison to get his help. Hmmm.....
Well done working in the reboot of the location, answered the questions without feeling like an info dump.
I really hope a care package from Bonnano or the folks at the bar arrives with Old Nate and the picture drawn by his son.
I'm not sure where the rumor-mongering about the show possibly being cancelled is coming from, but I really hope it's not true. There are so few show out there for those of us who can think and want intelligent story-telling over yet another "reality" farce.
Loved the Adam Baldwin cameo (that get up he was in made me think of the Train Job or Janyestown episodes from Firefly!) I have to say I didn't realize that was Cary Elwes, though, one as you wish would have done the trick though!
The last minute with Nate and Hardison and the secret very cool. I do have to agree with the poster upstream that if this is the last season, please, please end it on a happy note. I can deal with the angst and such if there is a happy ending. (Yes I realize real life isn't happy, but this isn't real life. I want my fantasy life happy dangit!)
Hopping on the fun train for another wild ride, can't wait to see what happens next!
Is the portrait of Nate's family member going to be in the new headquaters? Or was it left in Boston?
Also, at the end of the episode, Hardison and Nate talk about hiding something from the rest of the team, but I thought that team learned to trust each other after finding out about Elliot's previous involvement with Damien Moreau. What is different about this trust issue? Why doesn't Nate trust the others to tell them the truth whatever that truth may be, and why does Hardison go along with the lie?
MORE HARDISON AND PARKER PLEASE!!!! just loved the show, The Chemistry between the characters are among the best i ever seen. Do not watch much TV, but this show is special, keep up the good work.
petticoat: The Evergreen museum is a private entity. They bought the plane, they could sell it. In the real world, I don't think Del Smith (the owner of Evergreen Airlines and the museum) would ever sell the Spruce Goose; I mean, why would you??? In the Leverage-verse, though... (I'm kinda biased because those museum scenes were shot literally 10 minutes away from my house.)
Meh, here I say that and according to Wikipedia's page on the plane, it's actually owned by a separate organization that awarded custody of the plane to the Museum. So in the Leverage-verse, Nate's "backers" would easily make the California Aero Club an offer they can't refuse...
May have a (vaguely) intelligent comment later, but mostly just wanted to say welcome back and thanks for continuing to be awesome to everyone at Team Leverage!
But let me say a huge thank you to Dean, John and crew as well as TNT for the free viewing of the ep on TNT.
I am not a cable subscriber and was put off by last season's decision by TNT to ban any free eps, unless you were a customer of an approved cable provider. Even if I had been, the major provider in my market isn't included.
However, for the last four years, I have faithfully bought an Amazon season pass. And will this year.
As for last night's opener, I've now bought an I-tunes copy, an amazon copy AND just watched it free. So I'm doing my part.
If you had anything to do with changing TNT's mind, THANKS!!!!!
Brilliant premiere. Felt like greeting old friends and jumping back into things like it hadn't been months since we'd seen them. And there was just enough explanation of things for the new viewers too, which is what I like.
With all the old aliases being burned, does this mean Parker and Hardison's FBI aliases are gone? Does this mean the chances of seeing Taggart and McSweeten are minimal?
What's Nate's agenda here? Don't get me wrong, I love shady!Nate more than anything, but is his ultimate motivation for himself or for the others? I've seen speculation that maybe Nate is ill (though that may be a little soap-opera-y).
Was that a map on Hardison's screen at the end? Not being a US native Interesting locations lit up.
I saw your appearance on Wil Wheaton's "Tabletop"! What a fiasco! :)
As much as I would love to have Leverage go on and on, I'd still prefer that you know when you're going to end it and have the time to wrap the story up, rather than get cancelled and leave us hanging.
Is Nate's new haircut and neater look indicative of his attitude, or just Timothy Hutton getting tired of the shaggy look? There's a "discussion" going on the imdb boards. I'm of the opinion that it's directly related to Nate's newfound happiness with life.
Is Nate's little sailor boy detour connected to the devious planning he and Hardison were up to in the end? Or is it just the S. S. Midlife Crisis?
Are we gonna see Adam Baldwin again? ...Please?
Fantastic start to the season! Hoping you guys will prove again the fact that you're a beyond. awesome. show. Co-opting Community's hashtag... #sixseasonsandamovie
On Ratings: from TV by the numbers In literature, a conceit is an extended metaphor with a complex logic that governs a poetic passage or entire poem.
**************************************
Now that the show is set in Portland, is it filmed in Boston?
**************************************
According to the iPad sync app (which didn't really sync when I tried it) Adam Baldwin will be back.
**************************************
Unless John was doing a meta double switcharoo, the Preservation act thing wasn't either ledger or box, as Nate made it up on the spot.
**************************************
In a season 1 commentary, you mention that Sophie feels buying a theater would be cheating....times change?
**************************************
I'm thinking that McClory's being watched and the ID's being burned is the lie Hardison is talking about.
**************************************
So a location near a theater for Sophie, a resturant for Elliot.....I wonder if the "lie" is setting up new lives for them to go straight in, with things to do so they don't get bored.
I think I saw "old Nate" very briefly. When Nate is talking in the first "office" scene...there is a glimpse (I think) of old Nate behind him as he says "different tax zone than our old ids"
Christian Kane and Adam Baldwin! There aren't many BAMFs I'd call adorable but you managed to get two of them at once.
So how long have Eliot and Adam Baldwin's character (Vance, I think?) known each other? Long enough for Vance to know what happened to send Eliot totally off the rails and start working for people like Moreau?
Thrilled like mad that Leverage is back. Loved the season premier. No questions, just love.
To those working on writing campaigns to TNT, I might suggest referencing the advertisers represented during the show. Put your mouth where their money is!
I love how Parker sees the team. She and her money. Eliot and Hardison. Nate and Sophie. The Parker-Hardison dating is cute, but I like them separate. People don't always have to pair up on tv shows.
Oh, and I just tweeted @Vonage and @Duracell to thank them for advertising during Leverage. Don't know if they have a say in the matter, but I told Duracell I'll be buying their batteries.
I have to admit that I'm curious to see where the "Faded Rose" bit is going. It'd be nice to see Sophie grow up a bit and realize that she's never going to be an actress herself, and instead do behind-the-scenes work that she's probably better suited for -- but I suspect that's not the case.
The epilogue definitely has me intrigued, although I do hope you don't take too long to reel this one out.
Thinking about cameos with Elliot -- any chance we'll ever see Mikel from the Too Live Crew show up again?
Love the new set, and I love that you're really giving us a sense of place with Portland! If the city itself becomes a supporting character (so to speak) throughout the season, I'm all for it.
Where does everyone live? Surely not in the brewery? Does Hardison live there since it's his place? I guess since they just got into Portland the others haven't had time to put down roots, but I'm just curious.
I may have missed something, but why are they on the run from the Feds again? I can't recall anything from the season four finale that was much different than any of the other cons they've pulled off. Are they being charged with something?
If all their cover IDs are burned, then why isn't "Sophie Devereaux" burned also? It's not her real name.
Oh, and loved the Faded Rose Theatre scene. And Nate's hair.
So is the Spruce Goose REALLY fired up once a year? If so, how do I find the schedule so that my brother (an aerospace engineer) and my dad (an-82-year-old pilot who has three home-builts in his hanger) can be there for the next time? (hey the guy's 82; gotta do these things while we can!)
I realize you're not going to give me any absolutes. But there's a rumor going around Tumblr (yeah, I know. Serious business over there) that "Nate and Sophie will only be canon for a short time". Someone who claims to have some inside knowledge is claiming this. What's that about? Is there any truth to this? My instinct is that this person is full of shit. But um. I like Nate and Sophie so I figured I just... ask?
@PurpleOps It has been hinted in previous Question posts that the Leverage leadership has an ending to the series in mind already, even if this weren't a set up for this season, it might be for something multiple seasons down the line.
@ellabell 1 It seems that the time gap in previous seasons was about 2-3 months, this sounds about right?
@JohnRogers After watching the episode of TableTop with Khaos/Wil, I humbly request you to turn the plot in your Fiasco game to a Leverage episode. It works perfectly since all Nate's plans fall apart disastrously anyway.
"The difficulty Leverage faces in its basic plot structure is finding space to fit any the interpersonal relationships amidst the complexities of the heists, which most of the time it doesn’t do well. The romantic stuff works mostly because we’ve had four years to get to know these characters, which has allowed for some time to let the flirting build up to something deeper. It’s nice to finally see the love spread around; the only shortfall here is that for most of the episodes it’s all fleeting gazes and the occasional meaningful talk. Nate kisses Sophie in the finalé (a step down from their fling at the end of Season 3), but in the end all the romance is left at a cliffhanger."
Maybe you'd get better ratings if you'd give the audience more meaningful relationship moments, give that the focus it should have, the way other shows do it.
Oh, FritznBrenda, what are we going to do with you? One day, you'll actually get that this isn't a soap, isn't a teen dream show and isn't about the romances. Until you do, you're doomed to remain the study in insanity you've always been.
Somehow I suspect that if the focus had always been more on relationship than heist, that same reviewer would be saying "The difficulty Leverage faces in its basic plot structure is finding space to fit complexities of the heists amidst the interpersonal relationships"
It's so good to be back! If I highlighted all my favorite parts, I'd be reciting the whole episode back.
If you had anything to do with TNT's decision to let non subscribers stream the episodes, THANK YOU!
1a. Wouldn't Roemer realize there wasn't enough fuel in the lines from "turning over the engines" to actually get very far, if even off the ground? b Where did the team "acquire" the "wreckage"? 2. If the crew is brewing IPA, will they take over some the production of "Summer Grifter"? 3. Since this season looks like it's going to be focusing on relationships, which non canon fan pairing has surprised you the most over the course of the show?
Point well made @jamoche. Notice, too, the absence of attribution for the so-called review. FNB didn't write it herself because it doesn't have her trademark epic run-on sentences, but I doubt it came from any legitimate publication, paper or electronic. It's too conveniently self-serving for that.
I'm watching season 4 on dvd and everyone knows it but they are acting like they don't. First to hide the Nate /sophie relationship but now it is just easier for new viewers to keep it Sophie. They should reveal it to the audience for the loyal fans and then keep it sophie to hide her identity.
Yo let me just ask this how the hell could a projector do all that. That would have to be such a motherfckin high resolution image. Where did Hardison even get the footage for that shit? Don't even make no sense? Did they put something on the window to project on or were they just projecting on the glass? You had me until that scene. I was like "damn, leverage hasn't gone full on retarded yet. that's tight" then you unleashed it.
Let me ask you a more important question: why the hell is EVERYONE who aint on the crew fucking so stupid. EVERYBODY even the victims they helping. Let me ask a question directly to the victim of these bad guys: how you gonna let someone fuck you over that hard and then trust a total stranger to fix everything? Like you aint learned shit. I do NOT feel bad for these ass holes. I feel bad for the lady in the premiere despite the fact that her little kid was tryng to manipulate me emotionally with her grief. Your dad died? Stop sending him e-mails and change your damn shirt. You got brain damage? I would feel bad for hating on her except she fiction as hell. She's not even a real persn. Girl, get your shit together and stop acting like you don't even have no common sense.
In general though, these motherfuckers who need help are so stupid. like the episode that looked like The Office last season, those ass holes at the office were screamin at Nate sayin "WHAT DO WE DO?!" Motherfucker YOU WORK HERE. How you gonna ask this random ass hole what you should do? You can't even figure out your own job? YOU DON'T DESERVE A JOB.
Their clients AND the people they fooling are dumb as hell. They just walk in some place, say they doing a "spot inspection" and people are like "oh hell yeah, you want access to the mainframe? come on in." WHAT THE FUCK.
I love this show, if this shit don't get a season six, im kill somebody.
In the FYI department, the Spruce Goose and many other fine aircraft and spacecraft live in the Evergreen Aviation Museum in McMinville, about an hour's drive SE of Portland.
The rocket booster we see Eliot sabotage is another exhibit there. It's a Titan ICBM.
I took some pictures of the Spruce Goose when I visited there a couple of years back. Here is the first:
When you say in the commentary that Sophie and Maggie are "Canon", is that just tongue in cheek? Or is it legit? Or have you stopped giving a shit entirely. I won't say which one seems most obviously the case.
I feel like we should be worried about the end of that episode. I know you can tell us anything for fear that it will ruin the finale (or whatever), but can you tell us whether or not it is a POSSIBILITY that you're writing anyone out? What I'm asking is, if the show is renewed for a sixth season, will all the actors be on board?
Do YOU want a sixth season. I feel like you hint pretty heavily in the commentaries that the show will be ending soon.
Well, it's nice to see the crew together again, and it's nice to see Portland not in disguise. I also think it was incredibly clever to use the idea of drone technology in the SG and fake-redacted plans to get Roemer, who worked in drone manufacturing for the gov't.
But yeah, you lost me with the projector. And Parker jumping onto a moving car and getting herself latched onto the undercarriage.
Leverage is not exactly a believable show, but even within this universe where these guys are semi-superheroes, some things are more acceptable than other, and those things crossed the line into 'whaaaa' territory for me.
Clearly though Elwes was all in! ;) It was fun to watch him having so much fun twirling his mustache, and it was nice to see the couples all settled.
As for questions, I read somewhere that most cast contracts run for 5 seasons. Is that true for Leverage?
So just wondering did aldis and beth improv the 'no he didn't, yes he did' line. Because i was cracking up so hard. BTW- great start to season 5. Can't wait for the rest
What is the likelihood of a season 6? I've already written to TNT, for whatever good that'll do. Will all the actors be back? ... I'm most concerned about Gina Bellman. Will she be back??
@Izzie: You must look harder for the Princess Bride references. Didn't you notice they put Cary Elves in an Aircraft Of Unusual Size? That's not a coincidence :-)
great start to the new season. Love the new 'office'
and just a few questions
1) Since you directed, were you sailing w/Nate?
2) When the Busey accosted the little girl - why didn't Parker yell at her to run the other way? She didn't look like she was too far away to stop the guy if the girl took off.
3) Did Beth or her stuntie do the competence porn move when she entered that server room? AMAZING
well - shoot - I had a couple of others but forgot what they were. I may come back!
How about this re: Nate/Hardison conversation at the end: Hardison is now running the cons but since he's done such a poor job of it in the past, they're lying to the team about Nate running the cons? After all, Nate gave away all of his money in the first episode, but Hardison still has plenty of money.
Why did Gina finish filming before the others? Is she not going to be in the season 5 finale? I know this is getting ahead of myself, but judging by this and some twitter comments, I'm concerned she's not coming back. :-/
I want the show to continue, but not if the entire cast is not there.
I think Aldis Hodge should take lessons in acting. Overacting much? Sometimes subtle is good and indicates a more skillful actor. Also, all his accents sound the same. Not sure if you only write one for him to do or he messes it up every time.
Great season so far, but how come Parker changed her bangs? She looks a bit too glammed up for my taste this season. Glam and Parker so do not go together. (Besides which, she was gorgeous with straight bangs.)
As a native McMinvillian, I loved how you used other elements of the Air and Space museums for parts of the show. I have spent so much time with the Titan rocket that I knew instantly where that segment was filmed! I wish the characters would have stated that the museum wasn't in Portland, but oh well. I do love how Portland doesn't have to be "hidden" anymore and can shine in it's entirety!
Do you Ever listen to unsolicited ideas? I have the funnest idea for Beth if Season 6 dawns again in the sky of TNT. Seriously! Not looking for cash or anything, just write a lot, and it's bugging me... aspen ~always hear~
I have this idea for a segment for Beth's character that is really funny...do you Ever consider unsolicited material, over a drink at Blue Hour? I'll buy!
I am a certified fan, but beware TNT, I stop watching your network the moment you decide against a season six. Oh, do you understand what I am writing? Maybe it's just that there isn't any intellectual prowess at TNT. Perhaps y'all should just air animated children's shows, ones that you can 'follow...' Remember Star Trek. Hmm, too bad they didn't make more episodes. aspen kinkade ~always hear~
As a fan from Turkey, loved that Parker and Hardison were on vacationing in my city!! Whose idea was it? And why? Welcome back and thank you for a great episode!
Just watched The Experimental Job with commentary. Now I'm wondering. From what I remember, attracting the CIA guy's attention didn't pay off in Season 4. So maybe that ties into what Nate and Hardison are doing, and it will pay off in Season 5. Unless old age and alcohol have consumed too many of my brain cells, and I've forgotten something.
1.) There's a scene near the start where Nate is talking to Mrs. Sanders about what happened to her husband, and Eliot is at the bar talking to Jenny. Nate looks up and meets Eliot's gaze, and Eliot gave just a tiny little nod. I like that. Just that little "I'm in." No further discussion needed.
2.) When Nate and Roemer are looking at the Spruce Goose blueprints, and Roemer comes to the conclusion that Hughes had developed stealth tech in the 40s, Nate says "Nice going on the blueprints, Hardison." I thought for sure Hardison was going to later say that he didn't have time to change the blueprints, and that Hughes may have actually done just that.
2.) I like that you actually named the Busey, "Busey." I'm surprised it cleared.

SEASON 6....SEASON 6!!! I will officially quit watching TV FOREVER if we don't get a season 6!!
AND A MOVIE.
LOL! I'll settle for season 6!! Everyone go and sign the http://twitition.com/w9ksy and WATCH!
Saw you on tabletop and so agreed with your extended interview. Love the show keep up the good work
So TPTB at TNT are trying to prove that they're idiots? Leverage is awesome. What is wrong with them?
I say if TNT doesn't want our Leverage family, then we go find someone who does! Leverage is awesome, Someone will want it and TNT will lose out
Only 9 mins in and it's awesomely smooth! TNT are a bunch of idiots if they don't renew for season 6, or as long as Rogers/Devlin have great ideas and produce the best show on. Maybe another station could pick up Leverage if TNT is dumb enough to let them go.
Oh, John. Not to doubt you but do you really think you will be able to catch up?
He's never going to catch up. And frankly, that's a good thing, means he's bus MAKING stuff. They guy in the museum that isn't Wesley, he a local big wig?
Any chance on working the "Portlandia" crew into your background?
Great show, glad you are back on air.
I'm sorry, but did you actually name the bad guys head of security (presumeably his right hand thug) Busey?
I totally saw the teddy bear line coming the second he got out of the car, but it was still really funny:)
So IS there a likelihood that TNT will not renew for a 6th season??
Great episode, but you can't leave us hanging like that!
Seriously, you didn't just do that?!
Did I miss it or did we never get to find out Sophie's real name?
Ok, so how long before we find out about the conversation at the end? Please tell me this is not going to be a season long drag-out kind of thing?
Aaaah!! Cliffhanger!!!
I always love the family dinner table scenes - especially when Eliot cooks for everyone.
So, John, not a question about an ep, but I was wondering, what other new-run shows do you watch?
Another fun start to a season.
Great first ep! Two questions:
What can we do besides watching to make sure you guys come back for another season? Any chance of a movie?
Loved it.
1. Hardison putting up with Parker's idea of fun
2. the app
3. Eliot has his car back (did he steal the pink slip from Hardison?
4. How soon before we meet the Big Bad?
5. Our favorite Feds were too busy to come to Portland? How sad. McSweetie will be sad about Parker not being very available
6. Last minute made me think about what might have happened between Pilot and The Homecoming Job
7. Will we see Eliot's friend again later this year? The one who he was doing an outside job with?
Loved it and cannot wait until next week.
Ohhh is it to much to hope for that the restaurant is a way to keep Eliot distracted?.
Ps I think Eliot really needs a Teddy Bear. :). Loved the little pause when he said the line.
Where was the Harland leverage pic?... Did I miss it?...
One question:
1) Since the moving of Portland was kind of sprung upon the team (mostly Sophie) will we ever find out if Nate and Sophie buy an apartment?
Hasn't aired on the west coast yet, but guess what's trending on Yahoo? :D
Would you (or other commenters in the know) be willing to expand on that a bit?
why do we think TNT doesn't want the show anymore?
THAT was Cary Elwes? huh..missed that...was tugging at me that I recognized him, but didn't place it. Inconcievable.
Did the episode seen a bit...toony to anyone else? I mean, Elwes cackling like a loon, while the con involved them projecting a movie?
I imagine the Harland Leverage painting is still in Boston, along with the picture Nate's son drew.
Talea I'd say the 4 hours between show and re-show is a good sign that the luster is off the gold.
Of course, Ion's got the show in syndication now, so there's money there going to someone.

I mean, that's two consecutive finales we haven't had done yet. Please, John. I beseech you.
People I clearly Remember it being said that they like to give us the whole pie at the end of each season.
So why are we panicking again?
"Give me the...teddy bear." *snorts* Oh, Eliot.
Cooking lessons from Eliot! Yay!
Gahhh!! That ending. Pure evil. *frowny*
Turner Broadcasting/ TNT/ Leverage
One CNN Center
Atlanta, Georgia 30303
Oh, and I liked it. Keep it up.
Also, because I am obsessed with this show and the podcast, i think I can shed some light on some of these questions:
~Electric Entertainment does all the producing and TNT distributes.
Welcome back, show! I'm sweltering from insufficient interior refrigeration, so I am jealous of all the rain in Portland.
I, too, would love to see the suggestion box appear. Although I'm sure some enterprising fan has put one up already.
It would also be amusing to get some peeks at Hardison's to-do list at various points.
"The Tony Stark of the 40s" -- never change, Hardison.
Looking forward to auditions for Sophie's theater group.
1) I love Nate's new haircut. It suits him much better.
2) Cary Elwes Cary Elwes Cary Elwes!!!!! So happy you got him!!!!
Nate isn't dying, is he? Because that would suck.
"Boston" misses you!
Awesome way to start the season.
Questions:
Love that the Leverage team now owns and runs out of Bridgeport Brewery!
Looking forward to seeing Portland as Portland this season. And you know, all the fun stories and character bits, too.
Any particular reason Christian looks directly into the camera when he shakes the bear? Loved this when I saw it at FanCon2, and still loved it the second time around. I have to admit I had forgotten about the teddy bear scene. ROFL!
Oh, I missed you guys... A couple of quick questions:
(probably a really stupid question, considering their line of work...)
Hmmm.....
Ooo, great opening episode!
Great to see ya'll. Hope all is well.
Thank you for the short and sweet answers for Nate/Sopgie and Hardison/Parker.
Thank you for the shot of the WWII plane at the museum. Very nice.
Are we going to see more Adam Baldwin?
Why can't anchovies and pinapple be on the same menu? LOL! Or was it artichokes?
Why can't you learn to brew beer from the internet?
Mouse
Do not watch much TV, but this show is special, keep up the good work.
petticoat:
The Evergreen museum is a private entity.
Why is Cary Elwes doing an imitation of Ray Liotta?!
Amazon now has it.
Was Hardisons trip around the world for more than just time with Parker? Did it have something to do with his plans with Nate?

In literature, a conceit is an extended metaphor with a complex logic that governs a poetic passage or entire poem.
Great episode, thank you!
Watched it 3 times so far - much love to the crew. ;)
Comments -
TNT bites. Watched the 42 minute show from their website, interspersed with 18!!! minutes of commercials. (same ones each time)
Miss Nate's shaggy hair - much cuter in previous years
LOVE the new office. Nice combo of Nate's place and the LA office and VERY Portland. ;)
Are real explosions a thing of past? The fake explosions and fires kind of yank a body off the fun-train.
Neat to see Adam - that was a great little scene
Thanks again for a great show!!
So is the Spruce Goose REALLY fired up once a year? If so, how do I find the schedule so that my brother (an aerospace engineer) and my dad (an-82-year-old pilot who has three home-builts in his hanger) can be there for the next time? (hey the guy's 82; gotta do these things while we can!)
to the poster above me here:
I realize there are a lot of commercials, but I am grateful that TNT is streaming these eps again.
Also, specialty pretzels need to be on the menu.
Here's a "nice" Leverage review for you:

SECONDED!
WOOT! Season Five!
Others here have covered my questions.
Here is the first:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/stefan_e_jones/7588043788/in/photostream
When you say in the commentary that Sophie and Maggie are "Canon", is that just tongue in cheek? Or is it legit? Or have you stopped giving a shit entirely. I won't say which one seems most obviously the case.
What. Sophie's cheating on Nate with Maggie? That's hilarious. I always knew Sophie was a skank. Not necessarily in a bad way.
@Michal Dvorak...AOUS. Brilliant!!
great start to the new season.
Thank you again, Rogers, for everything you do
How about this re: Nate/Hardison conversation at the end: Hardison is now running the cons but since he's done such a poor job of it in the past, they're lying to the team about Nate running the cons? After all, Nate gave away all of his money in the first episode, but Hardison still has plenty of money.
Why did Gina finish filming before the others? Is she not going to be in the season 5 finale? I know this is getting ahead of myself, but judging by this and some twitter comments, I'm concerned she's not coming back. :-/
I want the show to continue, but not if the entire cast is not there.
Gina is in the finale - they have been filming it for 10 days! She just isn't in the final shots. Remember that they shoot out of order!
Just a quibble. :-) As I said, great season!
Seriously! Not looking for cash or anything, just write a lot, and it's bugging me...
aspen
~always hear~
I have this idea for a segment for Beth's character that is really funny...do you Ever consider unsolicited material, over a drink at Blue Hour? I'll buy!
I am a certified fan, but beware TNT, I stop watching your network the moment you decide against a season six. Oh, do you understand what I am writing? Maybe it's just that there isn't any intellectual prowess at TNT. Perhaps y'all should just air animated children's shows, ones that you can 'follow...'
Remember Star Trek. Hmm, too bad they didn't make more episodes.
aspen kinkade

As a fan from Turkey, loved that Parker and Hardison were on vacationing in my city!! Whose idea was it? And why?
Welcome back and thank you for a great episode!
If there is no season 6, do you have any ideas for a new show?
Just watched The Experimental Job with commentary. Now I'm wondering. From what I remember, attracting the CIA guy's attention didn't pay off in Season 4. So maybe that ties into what Nate and Hardison are doing, and it will pay off in Season 5. Unless old age and alcohol have consumed too many of my brain cells, and I've forgotten something.
Just got back from out of country vacation and get to enjoy the premiere and my s4 dvds that just arrived.
Just wanted to give you guys a big thank you for finally including subtitles in the dvd menus.
I had great expectations for the premiere and these exceeded them. Great job!
